It’s Summer Time! Summer is almost here, and so is the 90+ degree weather! Summer begins on Friday, June 21st and gives us 94 days in the season, ending Monday, September 23rd. In spite of the heat, the humidity, and those afternoon showers, Tampa Bay is full of amazing activities you can enjoy throughout the hot days of Summer. Here’s a list of activities you and your family, friends, and loved ones can enjoy during the Summer. 1.) Go to the beach - What better way to spend a weekend than soaking up the sun, drinking some Pina Coladas (If you’re over 21) and enjoying the beautiful beaches that Tampa Bay has to offer! The options are endless; you can visit Clearwater Beach, Belleair Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, North Redington Beach, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, St. Pete Beach, Pass-A-Grille Brach, South Pasadena, or Tierra Verde amongst others. 2.) Go biking - a bike ride around your neighborhood, local park or a biking trail - Biking is a fun activity you can do with your whole family. Choose between the Upper Tampa Bay Trail in the northwest end of Hillsborough County near Memorial Highway in Westchase. Visit Flatwoods Park, located on Morris Bridge Road in Tampa. Test your endurance and bike across the Courtney Campbell Causeway trail. You can park for free at Cypress Point Park or Skyway Park, and ride your bike one way and then back again, taking in the beautiful water views and the city skyline all around you. 3.) Go kayaking or paddle boarding - Some of the best spots are; The Hillsborough River, Little Manatee River, Myakka River, Withlacoochee, and Rainbow Rivers, Suwannee River, Chassahowitzka River, Silver Springs, Caladesi Island, and Weedon Island Preserve. I personally recommend the Rainbow River because the water is crystal clear and at a constant low to mid 70s temperature, it’s a great way to cool off during the hot and humid Tampa Summer days. You can see turtles, fish and a variety of birds. It’s definitely a unique experience. If possible, try to visit during a weekday since it gets really crowded over the weekends. There are also several campground options available if you’re into sleeping under the stars. 4.) Visit a unique restaurant in the Tampa Bay area you have never tried before. Explore new neighborhoods where you don’t normally eat at.

Become inspired and get ideas from our hundreds of local advertisers; take advantage of their Summer Specials, offers, and coupons advertised on all editions of Tampa Bay News and Lifestyles. 5.) Visit Hyde Park Village - Set in Hyde Park’s stunning historic district with tree-lined streets and charming brick walkways, Hyde Park Village is an amazing place for on-street retail, local businesses (including a movie theatre) and award-winning restaurants. Whether you visit during the day, or at night, there’s plenty to keep you occupied and happy. They also host local farmer’s markets on select dates, so visit www. hydeparkvillage.com for more information. 6.) Check out Busch Garden’s Summer Nights - As the sun goes down, the party heats up at Busch Gardens during Summer Nights from May 31 - August 11. Experience fireworks and thrilling rides like the all-new Tigris and dance the night away with live music and entertainment at different party zones throughout the park. 7.) Catch a famous Broadway play, opera, comedy show, concert or a variety of other fantastic events at the Straz Center in downtown Tampa. Visit www.strazcenter.org for more information and a list of upcoming events. 8.) Show your support for our local sports teams! Attend a Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Tampa Tarpons game, amongst others. 9.) Attend a concert at the Amalie Arena or the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre. Visit ticketmaster.com or amphitheatretampa.com for an updated list of upcoming shows and concerts. 10.) Visit a Museum -Recently Tampa Bay was awarded the honor of being one of the “Top Arts Destination” by American Style Magazine. Discover an eclectic collage of museums featuring the surreal masterworks of Salvador Dali to traveling Smithsonian Exhibitions. Get a group together and visit MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry), the Tampa Bay History Center, the Henry B. Plant Museum, the Dali Museum, or the USF Contemporary Art Museum amongst many others. I hope that gives you enough options to choose from when you find yourself wondering what to do this Summer. Until next time,

Carla Selby.

Say goodbye to pesky mosquitos this summer with Swamp Juice! Mosquito season can last year-round in the South. Not only are these itchy insects a nuisance, they are a real health hazard. As the threat of the Zika virus rises, people in affected areas need to arm themselves, health officials say. Insect repellent can help protect your entire family from mosquito-borne illnesses like Zika and encephalitis. SwampJuice Insect Repellent Spray is an all-natural, non-toxic defense against these viruses. SwampJuice is made by EcoSolutions Farm To Table, a privately-owned manufacturer and distributor of natural health and wellness products headquartered in Odessa, Florida. alternative to common, chemicalladen bug sprays. It is DEET-free, GMO-free and non-irritating, and it’s safe for children and pets. And the cool name will have kids asking for SwampJuice instead of running away when it’s time to apply bug spray. “Everything we make is 100 percent natural,” said Ed Kempf, president of Eco-Solutions Farm To Table, LLC. “We take the greatest things nature has to offer and apply our patented technology to make amazing products such as SwampJuice. The product is perfect for people who want excellent protection, but worry about the harsh chemicals found in most repellents. We are one of the few companies in the USA that can proudly state that our product is all natural, environmentally safe, pet and children friendly and ALL of our products are made in the USA. Also, SwampJuice has recently been endorsed by Bruce Mitchell from Swamp People.”

We’re also delighted to reveal that the newest member of our Swamp Juice family, Swamp Cream, has finally been released. After months of research and development, we have formulated the perfect blend of hemp extract, aloe vera and celadrin in an easy to apply cream that will bring fast, temporary relief to minor aches

and pains. Another all natural product that is earth friendly, safe and effective. We are often asked why we don’t sell our products in *big box* retail stores. Owner Arthur Fedrigon replies “We can, and we do. However, our preference is to support small business. We are able to provide superior customer

continued from page 1 KUMON is a comprehensive program serving children in preschool through high school. The individualized approach helps students develop a strong command of math and reading skills. Through the program, students develop a mastery of subjects studied which develops confidence, improves concentration and develops study skills as well. Enroll now - You and your child won’t regret it! Passionate owners Roopa and Max Palakkat put their money where their mouths were when they opened their KUMON Math & Reading franchise location at Grand Trinity Plaza. Having seen the success their own children experienced through the program, when they were considering a business of their own, the answer was simple. KUMON had been such a huge success for their own family, Roopa wanted to bring this success to other families in the area. “As a parent, this program has given me great satisfaction in that I feel they’re prepared for each stage. This program taught them discipline and I feel they’re prepared now for each stage of school and beyond. “Their homework has

Tech Talk with Bob - STOP: Before Repairing Your PC By Bob Dalles Imagine this. The computer you bought from that big box store seven months ago no longer works. No problem, it’s still under warranty. You call the manufacturer and get a return authorization from them. You pack and ship your computer to them. Today, two months later, you are finally getting it back from the manufacturer and cannot wait to turn it on. You turn it on and it boots right up into the desktop. You notice that your desktop doesn’t look the same way you had it before you sent it for repair. Upon further investigation you realize that some programs are missing, you cannot access your printer, and most importantly, all your pictures, videos, music and other data is nowhere to be found. Your computer works, but your personal stuff is gone. You call the manufacturer to ask about your data. Suddenly you find out that the only obligation they had to you under the warranty is that they would repair or replace

14 JUNE 2019

your computer to the way it was the day you brought it home from the store and took it out of the box. The manufacturer has no liability when it comes to your data. You learn the hard way that your missing programs, data, etc. are your problem. Many people find themselves in this predicament every day. Fortunately, you won’t. Computers are viewed by many as being no different as they see coffee makers or any other electronic appliance. Electronic coffee makers use hardware and some type of software to make them function. However, the software that runs your coffee maker is not as sophisticated as the software that runs your computer. People typically do not differentiate between the hardware and software aspects of a computer system. The truth is, where the software in your coffee maker never changes, the software in your computer is constantly changing. Especially your data files as you add and delete your music, pictures and other

personal documents. All this information is stored on your computer’s hard disk drive (HDD). Your HDD stores all computer software information including your personal and unique computer information. This unique information is created over time as you use your computer system by adding programs, printers, data, etc. All these changes alter the contents of your HDD. When you send your computer to the manufacturer for repair, your HDD may be physically replaced by having a new HDD installed into your computer or logically replaced by having all the information on the HDD erased and then rewritten with the information the HDD had on it when your computer was new out of the box. Think of it this way. If you ever had the battery in your car replaced, the first thing you probably learned when you got back into your car is that all your radio preset stations have been wiped out due to the battery being disconnected. The

auto repair shop’s responsibility is not to restore your radio presets but to replace your car’s battery with a working one. You’ll just have to reprogram those preset stations all over again. The same is true of your computer. Important information

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

can be lost during the repair. If it is your personal data, like rare photos, it may be impossible to replace. It is always your responsibility to make sure you have what you need to restore the programs and data you have added to your computer since you bought it. But no one ever tells you this until it is too late. So how do you minimize your data loss when you need your computer system repaired? The first thing you do is make certain that all your personal data is backed up. This can be difficult if your computer will not turn on. Even if your computer will not turn on, it may still be possible that your data can be extracted from the HDD before you send your computer off for repair. If you are not familiar with how to get your data backed up, contact a professional computer technician for help. The next thing you will need are the installation disk and/or files for any software you added to the computer after you bought it. Make sure you have all your installation media and product keys so these items can be reinstalled with as little trouble as possible. A list of your email and website user names and passwords are also going to need to be reentered the first time you try to access any of the secured websites you visit. If you are not sure if you have everything you need to recover all of the additions you made to your computer since you bought it, contact a professional computer technician to help you get all your ducks in a row. A small investment in prevention will save you a lot of money, and grief, when your time comes to get your computer repaired. Especially if you rely on your computer for managing your business or investments. Have a tech question? Email it to TechTalk-TBNL@ BobTheComputerGuy.NET. Questions will be selected by the popularity of a topic and answered in this column. If you have a more urgent need or have a unique situation you may schedule an appointment with one of my Professionally Certified Technicians by calling 727-534-4000. Until next time, stay safe on the internet!

“Central Park - Story continued

from page 1”

“We fell in love with the place, and we know a lot of customers love it too, so we didn’t want to change anything about it,” says Anita. “Well… we did paint the walls and re-organize the decor, but everything else has remained the same.” Anita Ferro worked in the restaurant business all her life, while her husband Otto recently retired from Walgreens, but always dreamed of owning a restaurant. When the opportunity to purchase Central Park Family Restaurant became available, they jumped at it. Bringing along their son and two good friends that they could really trust to help manage the place, Mario and Nick became assets to the vision placed in motion. “Mario and I have been best friends for 40 years,” says Otto. “We actually worked together at Sambo’s in St. Petersburgh in 1980. So when my wife and I decided to buy this place, we knew exactly who we wanted on board working next to us. But in all honesty, it is the staff that makes all of this possible. Anita and I feel extremely lucky to have such amazing employees and we couldn’t be more thankful for all of their hard work. They are what makes this whole thing happen.” Otto says that at first people were a little hesitant about the new ownership and management. As it is expected, change can make any of us feel uneasy. “At first people didn’t know what to expect. But once customers started realizing nothing else had changed, the quality of the food and the menu was

16 JUNE 2019

still the same, the chefs, the cooks, the staff… then people started trusting us and coming in more frequently.” Conveniently located on S.R. 54 between Old C.R. 54 and Rowan Rd., Central Park Family Restaurant allows you to enjoy an authentic “New York Diner” experience with down-home pricing and comfort, while surrounded by happy chatter and laughter from a satisfied crowd of loyal, local customers who have been coming in for over a decade. Every customer at Central Park is still greeted with a smile and treated with the utmost respect by the staff and the various members of the Ferro family, who work and run the day-to-day operations at this cozy family restaurant. You will often see Otto, Anita, and Matt greeting and seating customers, checking on tables, and making sure everyone is enjoying their meals.

Variety is the spice of life

“I love Central Park,” says frequent customer, Luci Vega. “As soon as you walk in, they make you feel at home. Everyone treats you like family…from the

owners who constantly check on you, to the amazing staff. But the best part…. the food! It doesn’t matter if I am craving Greek, Italian, or a traditional American breakfast on a busy weekday. They can satisfy any of your cravings with the most delicious, home-cooked meals. Even the fish is amazing. Seriously! You cannot go wrong at Central Park.” Altogether, the Central Park Family Restaurant menu offers costumers 10 pages of magnificent options to choose from, including all-day breakfast items, mouth-watering entrees, specialty salads, skyscraper club sandwiches, half-pound Black Angus beef burgers, hot openfaced sandwiches, and so much more! The menu definitely has something for everyone, and there are literally so many affordable and delicious daily specials that you could eat here every day for almost an entire year an never get the same food twice. Northern favorites include “scrapple” (a traditional mush of pork combined with cornmeal and wheat flour with spices) and grilled sandwiches such as the Central Park Deluxe, made with fresh layers of pastrami and corned beef piled high on grilled, authentic N.Y. Jewish rye, swiss cheese, spicy mustard and grilled onions. Down-home southern favorites include delicious fried chicken and fried green tomatoes, which are a unique Mediterranean and southern fusion. Greek Dinner specialties include a

traditional Gyro platter, chicken souvlaki, spanakopita, and the Pork Chops Athena amongst others. If you love mouthwatering gourmet burgers, then you must try “The Skyscraper,” weighing in at over two pounds, it is made with three half-pound Black Angus patties cooked to juicy perfection and topped with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion – WOW! If you’re like me and love breakfast food, you can enjoy fluffy, delectable pancakes, savory french toast, yummy waffles, breakfast sandwiches and omelets at any time of the day. There are actually over 60 types of omelets featured on

the menu! Featuring a section called “Omelets from Around the World,” that include options such as the “Royal Hawaiian Omelet” made with pineapple, ham and cream cheese, and the “New Yorker Omelet” prepared with corned beef, pastrami, onions and swiss cheese. With so many dishes to choose from, you are going to have to come as often as Butch does, to make sure you don’t miss out on any of their delicious creations. During my visit, I tried their Cobb salad, and it was one of the best salads I’ve had in my entire life. I am currently daydreaming about those big, perfectly cooked pieces of bacon and the tender and juicy grilled chicken. Yum! But I’ve been several times, tried several dishes,

and everything has always been fresh and delicious. You will not be disappointed. The hardest part of your day may just be deciding which of their amazing menu item to try. Make sure you leave room for dessert! You also must make it a point to try their cheesecakes and delicious pies! Central Park Family Restaurant is located at 7657 SR 54 in New Port Richey in the plaza near Dunkin Donuts and Wendy’s. They are open daily from 6:30 a.m. with last seating at 8 p.m. For information about Central Park Family Restaurant, including catering, call (727) 376-7402; log on to www. centralparkfamilyrestaurant.com, or like them on Facebook.

A Kid’s Place of Tampa Bay… A Bridge to Safety For Children By Lisa Stephens Sometimes being a kid isn’t as simplistic as many of us recall. Unfortunately, some children experience life situations that conclude with them being placed in an environment away from their initial home. Fortunately, there are places like A Kid’s Place that will take in these children who desperately need a loving environment in which they can be understood and well taken of. A Kid’s Place is a non-profit organization that provides refuge for abused, neglected and abandoned children. A Loving Place For Kids in Need The mission of A Kid’s Place is to provide a safe, loving and nurturing home for foster children or children who have been removed from their home due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. They certainly do that and more! Development Director Samantha

Mellen explained the average length of stay for children at A Kid’s Place is approximately six months. “I love working with the children and seeing them have the opportunity to be a child,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see our community come together and help those in need.” This unique 60-bed facility houses children ranging in age from newborns to those about to “age out” of the foster care program once they reach 18 years of age. Nestled upon 5 acres of land in Brandon, this facility offers children a home-like environment in a neighborhood setting. Their in-house parent model provides children with consistent caregivers. When possible, residents are housed with their siblings. Brothers and sisters are allowed to be placed together to encounter the healing process in the presence of one another. Therapy, dental and educational services are provided on site. Pre-kindergarten and toddler

programs are also offered as well. At A Kid’s Place, children don’t have to be transported offsite to receive these crucial services. They’re all available to them in the familiar space of A Kid’s Place. The goal of A Kid’s Place is to be the supportive bridge to children between where they’ve come from and where their next best home can be. That next best

home might be with relatives, a foster home or reunification with family when the timing is right for that. Or possibly adoption. Whatever the case, children placed at A Kid’s Place will enjoy a safe and loving environment until their next home is determined. Helping One Child at A Time The services provided to

children residing at A Kid’s Place are second to none! They aim to meet the social, educational, medical and psychological needs of each child there. Well-child exams, immunizations and minor illness treatments are provided to residents of A Kid’s Place. Dental cleanings and evaluations are provided by Suncoast Dental. Bay Area Behavioral Services provides counseling services to children in need of healing from past trauma. Educational services are also provided to those children in need of help to catch up with grade level classmates. To gain skills for future independent living, a program is also offered for residents 13 years and older. Combined with their Youth in Action program, teens are prepared to learn and grow in a safe environment. How You Can Help How is all this made possible? Fundraising is key to the success of A Kid’s Place. There are several annual events held that have become community favorite events. Their Annual Golf Classic is held every October. Get your group together now to enjoy this fun event! This is held each year at the prestigious Avila Golf and Country Club and features hole contests, prizes and auctions! Their Home is Where the Heart Is Holiday Stroll takes place each December. This event features South Tampa residents welcoming guests into their homes for an enchanting evening of holiday merriment, music, food and festivities! This is an even you surely want to watch for to put on your calendar for holiday fun! Another annual event that has become a community favorite is

their Fostering Hope Black Tie Gala. Held in February, this black tie affair features a VIP reception, live entertainment, dinner and silent and live auctions featuring spectacular prizes! Want to hold your own fundraiser for A Kid’s Place? You can do it! Contact Samantha at smellen@ akidsplacetb.org or call her at 813-381-3839. If you’d rather give your time instead of attending a fundraising event, you can do that as well! Samantha said, “You can volunteer on campus in our donation room, kitchen or at the front desk.” Volunteers help plan and execute their signature events and also participate during their holiday gift drive which takes place throughout the year. Transform Yourself to a Better You With Dr. Erika Bradshaw

By Lisa Stephens For many, the search for quality healthcare to resolve various issues can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, we get one issue resolved with one healthcare provider only to be referred on to another to address something else that is troubling our bodies. Fortunately, Dr. Erika Bradshaw and her professional staff understand the need for whole body awareness and the importance of knowing that our bodies work like machines; one thing affects another. Through integrative and holistic therapies, her ultimate goal is to provide optimal wellness to her patients. Angelica Loebenberg, ARNP joined the Transform Your Health family in 2018. Alongside Dr Bradshaw, she offers holistic, personalized care to patients, as well as specialized nutritional and dietary consults and well woman exams. Originally from Los Angeles, Dr. Bradshaw was raised in a holistic environment. After completing medical school, she was eager to find other ways to treat patients. “I attended an ACAM (American College for the Advancement of Medicine) conference and the rest was history.” Alternatives to traditional medicine are available and have proven to be very successful at achieving optimal health and well being. Integrative medicine entails diagnosing and treating present conditions as well as preventing others from occurring. “There are so many layers of success for each person. Most patients present with multiple symptoms and a variety of goals that they wish to achieve,” she said. She explained the body is like an onion. “Together we have to peel back the layers and work through the various symptoms and concerns piece by piece. By repairing one, you open the pathway to allow repair of another and so on.” Oftentimes, we don’t know specifically what is wrong but we know we just don’t feel our best. Dr. Bradshaw can help with those “grey” areas as well when it comes to hormones, fatigue and other components of our health that affect our well being. Dr. Bradshaw has been practicing in the Tampa Bay area since 2003 and received

the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award. Reviews from Angie’s List include: “Dr. Bradshaw makes sure to get the right testing done to diagnose your issues and get to the root causes of health issues. I have conditions that my primary care doctor never found in many years that she easily identified and I am now on the road to wellness.” Stacia G. “Dr. Bradshaw is amazing! She is extremely thorough; she spent about an hour with me. She carefully looks through all your medical records. She will also do the more natural approach or the traditional approach; whichever you prefer. She definitely knows how to do both very well. She is pretty much the best doctor I have seen when you have multiple issues or problems going on. If anybody can figure it out and get to the bottom if it, she can.” Doug K. Stephen G. said, “Dr. Bradshaw was very thorough, listened attentively, asked lots of questions, considered my situation and addressed treatment in detail. I have never had a doctor who listened to me, reviewed my health and gave me options on treatment. I didn’t feel rushed or made to feel like my health issues were not a concern. She gave me hope that she could treat my problems and get results.” Getting Started is Informative and Assuring For each new patient, an initial appointment includes an hour long face to face evaluation and consult. Symptoms

and concerns are addressed. Past and current living environments, supplements and medications currently being taken are discussed. Once this information is gathered, a treatment plan is created. Patients then sit down with a care consultant to review and discuss the specifics of the treatment plan and get any additional information required to move forward toward wellness. Follow-up visits are requested in 4-6 weeks to evaluate test results and discuss any change in symptoms or conditions. At that time, any change in treatment, if necessary, will be discussed. “Helping my patients gives me pleasure. Seeing their health and overall quality of life improve is almost like watching your children grow. There is a special type of pride associated with being able to witness and be a part of this journey towards improvement,” Dr. Bradshaw shared. Once optimal health is reached, a maintenance plan is prescribed. Each plan is specifically geared towards the individual patient to meet their personal needs. Meeting the Needs of Each Individual Success in achieving better health with Dr. Bradshaw has been experienced in a variety of areas. Chelation therapy has been researched (TACT trial) and noted as an alternative for those cardiac patients hoping to avoid surgery. For patients suffering from menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, irritability and mood swings, fatigue and insomnia, implementation

of Bio-Identical Hormone therapy is a possible treatment solution. Dr. Bradshaw explained that by evaluating thyroid function in a more holistic way, natural treatments can be utilized which more closely mimic normal thyroid function. “Getting an idea of the complete, bigger picture also allows evaluation of any underlying factor or condition such as iodine deficiency, auto immune disorders, etc.” she said. The office also treats patients suffering from chronic or adrenal fatigue. “Much of our current way of living keeps us in a state of ‘fight or flight,’ resulting in frequent or constant elevation of cortisol levels. Over time, this can lead to burnout and chronic fatigue,” she explained. Professional-grade supplements are available both on the website and in office

to keep you on the wellness track. Monthly specials are available and updates can be found on the website and Facebook pages. June specials include a “Love Yourself” package with BComplex, Vitamin C and other antioxidants; and a “Love Your Skin” bundle which utilizes the BEMER mat and an oxygen gel. The Man and the Message - Rhythm and Blues Artist, Alex Harris By Tom Bostock Another velvet-soft, soulful rhythm and blues single offering by locallybased talent, national recording star, (recently signed with the Orchard/Cross the Line Music, a division of SONY Music Entertainment - congratulations), actor, blues music icon, and song writer, Alex Harris, continues caressing the airways and his YouTube channel to the obvious delight of his many adoring fans, both local and world-wide, as it climbs to the top of the music charts. His latest song, another in a long series of chart-topping hits, is a plaintive, original, soul-searching ballad, “Make It Better,” written by Alex and a few of his talented fellow songwriter friends. Like his many other hits, “Make It Better” is as easy to relate to, as is to the man, Alex Harris and his message of hope. Not an overnight, instant sensation, Alex paid his dues

on his way to stardom. In his early years, his family gospel chorus, A7, first traveled the country sharing their gospel message before crossing over into rhythm and blues. He credits his mother for stimulating his patience and compassion and his preacher father for his leadership; elements easily identifiable in the tapestry of his current work, “Make It Better.” In addition to his own gospel church background, and the encouragement of his family, Alex credits several other strong influences, mentors from his early years, singer/songwriters Michel Mathis, and Chris Willis with their influential assistance along his career path. He gives special recognition to Dr. Bobby Jones, whose long-running radio and television shows, The Bobby Jones Gospel Radio Show and The Bobby Jones Gospel Countdown are the yardstick by which all other gospel shows are measured today.

Asked about the style of his songs, Alex noted, in our recent interview, that, “I want to write something that raises the awareness of how much we need each other;” It is clearly present in the lyrics of his latest song. Each powerful line is an effort, as Alex says of the reason for not just this one but all of his songs, to answer one of the motivating questions in his life, how can he “lift humanity and bring out the positive energy that he sees in all of us, but has to be stimulated?” Very well, I think we would all agree. In response to a question about the best advice that he ever received when he was first starting out, Alex

related an incident that happened after he had been responsible for an on-campus extravaganza at the college he was attending, La Grange College in Georgia. It was the college chaplain that offered some sage, unsolicited advice that struck Alex with its simplicity and guides his career even today. “Don’t use

the gift,” the chaplain offered, “let the gift use you.” Alex willingly offers the gift of his experience to the next generation of singer/ songwriters; it is elegant in its simplicity. “Don’t really think that hard. Be who you are and be true to who you are. There is someone, somewhere waiting to hear your music. Stimulate the positive energy that we all have inside us.” Appalled by the conditions of under-served and overlooked children in a lower income area in St. Petersburg, Alex proved that what he sang about was more than just words. The same words of, as Alex said, “love, hope, healing and humanity” were realized as motivating forces, when, in 2012, with the help of his partner, Herbert Murphy, he did more than just stand idly by, as these “disadvantaged, underserved youth and teens” were lost to a life of futility and despair. Alex said that “you can’t love anyone else, if you can’t love

yourself….” And love these kids, he did. The result of which Alex is both CEO and co-founder, ACT (Arts Conservatory for Teens), in conjunction with the Pinellas School System, offers both before and after-school programs to disadvantaged youths (11 -18 years old). Its success is reflected in some outstanding statistics; 100% high school graduation where drop outs were rampant. Many of the children also went go on to attend college. To date, the organization has served over 2500 students! Alex the man, and Alex the performer are timely individuals who impact the world they live in every day. Through his selfless caring for his fellow man, expressed in both his actions and his music, he is doing his part to make our world a better place. After all, Alex notes, “we are all part of a universal eco system.” “Make It Better” is just another expression of that grand design.
