How Do You Spell Hope for Hearing and Balance Disorders? Trinity Hearing and BalanceCenter By Tom Bostock Think about the sound of a robin singing as you walk along a garden path, or the sounds of a child’s laughter as you gaily play together with carefree abandon. These are some things we take for granted, our hearing and sense of balance. Unfortunately, some of us aren’t that lucky.

Suffering from hearing and balance disorders limits our ability to be mobile and enjoy our children and grandchildren in this limitless world around us. If this describes you, don’t despair. There is hope, and it comes in the form of the hearing and balance professionals at Trinity Hearing and See “Trinity Hearing & Balance” on page 20

Start The New Year Off Strong Every new year symbolically represents an opportunity for a new beginning—a chance to make changes or improvements from the previous year. A new year feels fresh, invigorating and like we’re being given a new chance to right wrongs, course correct, be more thankful, grow, and keep fighting to fulfill our dreams and goals. Every new year is also filled with new added pressure, anxiety, and high expectations to improve from one year to the next. We’re creatures of habit, and even if we don’t want to recognize it, we follow this pattern of setting goals for each new year that starts. And that’s a good thing depending on how you approach it. I had big dreams for 2020; none of them came true. In January, all my dreams and plans, not just for the rest of the year but for the rest of my life, seemed to have gone down the drain. Add the global pandemic, serious financial issues, losing thirteen relatives and close friends, and getting ill again from my two auto-immune conditions. I felt broken. I found myself all alone at home, crying myself to sleep every night for months. I thought I would raise a big family in that “forever home,” and I let depression and anxiety get the best of me at times. I struggled to balance work with my personal life, and I still do at times, not going to lie. But I tried my very best to count my blessings and reminded myself daily of all the positive things in my life, and that made all the difference. I bet you all had goals and plans for 2020 too. We all did the best we could under the circumstances, and this was a tough year to give ourselves some grace around our goals and dreams. I have had to remind myself regularly that I am just a human being, experiencing really tough human experiences, which are outside of my control. We may have the same plans for 2021 as we had for 2020, and that’s not bad at all. Life rarely goes according to plan, and we cannot let ourselves get discouraged or feel hopeless because things didn’t go exactly as we were expecting them to. Life is beautiful, but life is hard. There are lots of twists and turns and unexpected events. We need to act like arrows in 2021. Even though we get pulled back, it’s only to gain

impulse and be released forward with more strength and better aim. Whenever you feel you’re stuck in a tough situation and moving backward, don’t sweat it; take advantage of the impulse that will propel you ahead. Maybe you gained some “covid weight” this year, you fell behind in paying off your credit card debt, or you didn’t make enough progress on some work projects you planned. You’re going to be okay. No matter where you are now, start there. While beginning a new year will not magically make things easier or better; there are a few exercises you can do to transition into the new year with a more positive mindset. Try this: Write down everything you want to release or let go about 2020. What went wrong, what hurts you, what disappointed you... don’t let anyone read your answers. Once you’ve completed the list, either crumble it up, cut it all up, or throw it away in a fire. This exercise aims to release these tragic events, situations, and challenges to make room for a more positive 2021 start. Then set a timer for 15 minutes and write down everything positive that happened in 2020. Don’t edit your thinking; brainstorm. A few of my own examples are; most of my family and friends are healthy and well. I kept a somewhat stable job. I was able to lose over twenty pounds. I was able to meet a lot of wonderful people. Now, answer the following questions as honestly as possible; What do I want to stop doing in 2021? What do I want to start doing in 2021? And last but not least, what would make 2021 a more successful year? These exercises are a great way to release any challenges and negative energy in your life and at work, and it also helps you regroup and rethink your goals for the new year. Remember, neither you nor I can control all the events in our lives. We can only control how we react and how we respond. No matter what 2021 brings, remember to release the negative and focus on the positive. Just never, ever lose faith or hope. Until next time,

Tech Talk with Bob: A GIFT CARD SCAM My friend Bea had an experience that really rattled her nerves. She received an email from “Amazon” telling her that her account was charged $3,000.00 for a television. After confirming with Tony, her husband, that he didn’t buy it, they concluded it must be a mistake. Tony immediately called the customer service phone number that was included in the email. Once he finally got through to “customer service” he received yet more discouraging news. Bea and Tony’s Amazon account had been hacked according to the “representative.” Needless to say, they were both astounded. Fortunately the “representative” was able to offer them a quick solution. For $500.00 the “rep” could repair the “hacked

6 JANUARY 2021

account” and expunge the charges for the $3,000.00 television. Tony wasn’t thrilled with the solution but reluctantly agreed to the “rep’s” terms. Tony reached for his American Express card to pay. As Tony read off his Amex number the “rep” immediately stopped the transaction and told Tony that their credit card processing system had just gone down, again. The “rep” explained to Tony that they were having problems with the system all day. Tony asked if the “rep” would call him when the system came back up. The “rep” agreed but warned that if Tony delayed, that $3,000.00 TV might ship before the order could be cancelled; and then Tony would also have to pay the shipping to return the TV.

In order to expedite the cancellation the “rep” suggested Tony pay with a $500.00 gift card. The “rep” explained that they process gift cards on a different system than credit cards, so that even though their credit card system was currently down, they could still process the payment by having Tony read off the numbers on a gift card. Tony sent Bea out to pick up a $500.00 gift card. While waiting for Bea to return, Tony asked the “rep” how something like this could happen and why he had to pay so much? The “rep” explained that it was not Amazon who was hacked, but it was Tony’s IP address that had been hacked which led to Tony’s Amazon account being hacked. Therefore the financial responsibility fell on Tony,

according to the “rep.” Tony was determined to get to the bottom of this nightmarish mess. Finally, Tony called me and filled me in on what was going on. I cringed as he revealed the events that transpired. I immediately explained to Tony that he was in the process of being scammed. Tony and Bea came within inches of giving away a sizeable pile of money to cyber criminals. Fortunately, they did not give the gift card code to

the scammers. Can you tell me what Tony should have done differently? He assumed that the Amazon customer service phone number that was listed in the email was legit. The cyber criminals were so good that Tony believed he was actually speaking with Amazon when he called. But he wasn’t. What Tony needed to do was look up Amazon’s phone number instead of relying on the contents of this bogus email. Had he actually called Amazon Tony would have found out that Amazon had nothing to do with this and that Tony, Bea and Amazon were all unsuspecting players in this deception. I cannot tell you how happy I am that Tony contacted me before he and Bea handed over the 500 bucks to these criminals. There are a lot of scams like this circulating. If you ever

receive a suspicious email like this, call the company directly. Be sure to look up the phone number on your own and not rely on any phone numbers given in the email. Companies like Amazon want to know about these scams. So report any emails claiming you owe money. By the way, Bea and Tony were just one of many folks caught up in a cyber scam claiming to be Amazon. If you get any emails from Amazon and want to verify them, Amazon’s “real” customer service number is 1-888-2804331. Please stay on guard, and stay safe. In 2020, there were an estimated 2620 new cases among men in the U.S. resulting in 500 deaths (1:883). East Lake Woodlands Drive for a Cure supports local efforts to spread awareness about breast health, assist with breast cancer screening, provide diagnostic services and treatment, and provide short-term financial assistance to patients undergoing cancer treatment. The

event supports Love Thy Neighbor (L.Y.N.) Fund, which provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients in active treatment and recovery in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Our event supports the Morton Plant Mease Mammography Voucher Program (MVP) which provides screening, diagnostic and treatment for uninsured or underinsured patients in Pinellas County. Gasparilla Postponed To April Amidst COVID19 Pandemic Carla M. Dubis Tedeschi. One of the biggest and most iconic annual events in the Tampa Bay Area is officially being pushed back a few months in 2021. Tampa pirates and booty chasers will have to wait a couple of months for the awaited Gasparilla celebrations. Imagine hundreds of thousands of people flocking to downtown Tampa in the middle of a global pandemic that’s already taken the lives of over a million and a half people worldwide… It doesn’t seem like such a smart idea. Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla and EventFest have decided to postpone the awaited Pirate Invasion and Gasparilla Parade out of an abundance of caution given the pandemic. Gasparilla festivities usually take place in January every year. In 2021, the infamous pirate invasion and parade were scheduled for January 30, 2021, but COVID19 has different plans for these events attracting large crowds. Event organizers have been working closely with healthcare providers and city leaders and came to the unanimous decision that postponing the event was the best option for the Tampa Bay community, given the increasingly rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in the city. “We always had a plan B,” said Peter Lackman, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla’s Captain. “We want to have a great event that people are comfortable coming out to and are out there to have a good time, and the size of the crowd won’t matter to them.” In a recent statement, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor called Ye Mystic Krewe

16 JANUARY 2021

and EventFest “Incredible partners.” Mayor Castor appreciates their commitment to keeping the Tampa Bay community safe. “Gasparilla is a cherished tradition—when we come together, we want to ensure we do it the right way,” Castor added. “Safety is our most important responsibility. In the public interest of restricting events that bring large numbers of people to our community, we have made the difficult decision to postpone. We look forward to celebrating with our mateys safely and responsibly this April 2021,” Lackman added in his recent news release. No doubt postponing this event will affect not just the Gasparilla Krewes and thousands of visitors but also many local businesses that are already hurting. We encourage Gasparilla fans to show their support for those unique local businesses by purchasing Gasparilla t-shirts, costumes, colorful beads, memorabilia, and other items, and be ready to celebrate when April 2021 rolls around.

Tampa Bay can expect the Children’s Gasparilla event presented by Chick-Fil-A Tampa Bay on Saturday, April 10, 2021, and the Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest on Saturday, April 17, 2021. The closing event, Ye Mystic Krewe go Gasparilla’s Outbound Voyage, will take place on Friday, May 14, 2021. Tickets for the Gasparilla Pirate Fest and Children’s

Gasparilla are on sale at GasparillaTreasures.com. Event tickets purchased for the original dates will be honored for the newly scheduled parades in April 2021. Ticket holders are not required to take any further action. For inquiries and other questions regarding ticket availability or refund issues, please contact office@eventfest.com.

“Trinity Hearing & Balance”

- continued from page 1 Balance, a patient-friendly practice. Professional and compassionate are the two words that define them. When practice founder, Dr. Kelly Hansen, opened her office in 2006, after six years of hospital work as an audiologist and another ten years in an Ear nose and Throat practice, it was the culmination of a seed planted while she was still in college. “I took a couple audiology classes when I was a freshman in college,” Dr. Hansen said. “I really liked the classes.” As she confirms on her website (www. trinityhearingandbalance. com), in “Seven Reasons to Visit,” referring to herself,

20 JANUARY 2021

her associate Dr. Goldowski, and her office administrator, Meghan Freeman, Dr. Hansen writes, “We absolutely love what we do!” Love and proficiency are the unbeatable combination reflected in every aspect of the practice. To go the extra mile for her patients, after obtaining both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Purdue and her Doctorate of Audiology at the Arizona School of Health Science, Dr. Hansen obtained her clinical board certification from the American Academy of Audiology and is “clinically certified by the American Speech-Language hearing Association.” Many workshops, and periodic courses in her specialties, balance, and hearing disorders, keep her knowledge of advances

current “in the most up to date diagnostic testing and treatment for these disorders,” her profile notes. Dr. Hansen’s associate, a graduate of the Cleveland State University with her Bachelor of Arts degree in speech and hearing, Dr. Nikki Goldowski-Richa brings an equally diverse background to the practice. As her profile notes, while completing her Doctorate of Audiology at the University of Louisville, she worked at “Veteran’s Affairs medical centers, children’s hospitals, ENT clinics, and private practice setting in Louisville.” She completed her required year’s internship at Trinity Hearing and Balance where she continues to practice today. Drs Hansen and Goldowski-Richa represent over twenty years

Dr. Kelly Hansen, Au.D., owner, Trinity Hearing & Balance of experience, solving their grateful patients’ hearing and balance problems. Referring to the practice,

Dr. Nikki Goldowski-Richa, Au.D. Dr. Hansen noted. “We offer exceptional care and thorough diagnostic testing.” She stressed the need for people having hearing problems “to get evaluated by a doctor.” A hearing aid represents a substantial investment, Dr. Hansen advised. I always thought a hearing aid was just a hearing aid. It amplified the sound so a person could hear. Dr. Hansen corrected my ignorance. “A big difference” she said, “as far as technology is concerned, a hearing aid is not just an amplifier but offers a variety of technologies.” Since Trinity hearing and Balance is an independent practice, they have access to all the major manufacturers. She noted that “One company cannot always fit a patient’s needs.” Buying a hearing aid is not like buying a car where you negotiate a price with a sales associate and leave the dealership knowing you have

purchased what you needed. Hearing aids are not just loss specific. An individual’s lifestyle needs to be taken into consideration when discussing the appropriate technology. Do you need to hear in church? Do you need to hear in group situations or noisy environments? Are you having a hard time hearing the television? These are just a few situations that need to be discussed. As she notes, “Our goal is not just to sell hearing aids but to make sure that an individual gets the appropriate technology for their lifestyle and hearing loss. We ultimately want to make sure there is nothing medically wrong with your ears before purchasing a hearing aid.” It takes a doctor, and not just a hearing aid salesperson, to make that determination. The other aspect of their practice is balance, dizziness, and vertigo. As one of the first centers in Florida to install the revolutionary Epley Omniax System, Trinity Hearing and Balance is one of “just a handful of clinics to offer this paradigm-shifting computerized technology.” It is a system that helps to diagnose and treat patients suffering from dizziness involving inner ear disorders. While other technologies only provide general assessment, this new system “allows for more precise treatment, with significantly greater chance of success.” The following excerpts from their website’s article explains the technology’s use: “When loose particles in the ear canals are contributing to the vertigo, the Omniax

System makes it possible to pinpoint the location of the particles and provide the information needed for the caregiver to make treatment decisions.” “The system’s software gives the audiologist a precise record of the positions and eye movement readings to aid in monitoring progress and overall management of the patient. Its multi-axial rotational capability allows the caregiver to maneuver the particles out of the canals into an area of the ear that will not be irritated. The device is also well-suited for treatment of patients who pose maneuvering challenges, such as those who are frail, obese, or disabled.” “The System keeps Trinity Balance and Hearing Center on the cutting edge of new

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

technology in the field and it means we’ll be able to continue providing the best possible care for our patients who suffer from dizziness and balance problems,” Dr. Hansen proclaimed on her website. As Dr. Hansen notes, ”her main purpose for opening Trinity Hearing and Balance Center was to provide a state-of-the-art facility for diagnosing and treating hearing, dizziness and balance disorders.” Whether your issue is hearing, or balance related, trust Trinity Hearing and Balance Center is always on the forefront of the latest dizziness, balance, and hearing loss technology. “SAT/ACT”

- continued from page 1 and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice. A major reason for his outstanding results are the special techniques and learning skills developed over many years. These include teaching students how to speed-read at 1,000+ words per minute; multiple memory aids to triple a student’s speed of learning and remembering vocabulary; reverse engineering that doubles “learning and retention speeds”; many additional math techniques such as “Quick Solve” to improve speed, reduce errors, and handle the “ultra-hard” questions; “bottom up” reading for key ideas and concepts; specialized reading strategies found in no reference books or other courses; and structured essay writing following his customized guides. HIS STUDENTS NORMALLY IMPROVE 200-350 POINTS ON THE SAT TOTAL SUPERSCORE, AND 4 – 7 POINTS ON THE ACT COMPOSITE He believes that half of a student scoring well is mental. So much of his course includes mental techniques such as “Have fun taking the test,” defining success as “When you finish the exam, walk out of the room, and look back on all we have done … he simply wants you to say to yourself, ‘I have done the very best with the time and priorities that I had.’”; taking a three-part “Mental Break” when concentration starts to fade; and seeing an exam as their opportunity to show just how well they can do - which greatly reduces mental pressure so students can stay in their “high performance zones”. WHAT STUDENTS AND PARENTS SAY ABOUT HIS CLASSES STUDENTS “This is not the average, boring class. I will learn.” “I really liked the involvement in the sessions, rather than just teaching from a book.” “Learning the structure of the Essay was great.” “When I started, I took a 25 question

vocabulary test right away and got 5 out of 25 correct. After his intensive vocab “memory hooks” approach, I retook the test and got 23 correct. Wow! ” “I have never had a teacher who has so many creative and effective ways to help me learn. And I like the style of the classes, which are like college seminars taught by a full professor. ” “The time goes by so fast.” “We work. We learn. It’s worth it.” PARENTS “You helped our daughter qualify as

a National Merit Finalist and helped our family in college planning. Now she is a freshman at a “Top 25” school with a summer studying at Cambridge U in England. Thank you so much.” “When our son took your class as a ninth grader, his baseline scores on the SAT were around 700. When he took the exam, he scored 1100 and qualified for the Duke TIP Program. This score was higher than the average score for a senior. Now he is a National Merit Finalist.” “Our daughter had scored a 14 on the ACT and needed an 18 to satisfy FCAT

and graduate with her class. Thanks to you, she scored a 20 and graduated!” “Our daughter had an excellent GPA and high standing in her IB Program, but her SAT scores were around 1150. After your class, she scored over 1400. Thank you.” “We are so excited because our daughter just learned she was accepted for Early Admission to Princeton, and will be going in the fall. Your major increases in her ACT and SAT scores were a major reason.” FOUR FREE BOOKS/GUIDES FOR HIS CLIENTS If you ask Dr. Adams what he does, his answer is quite interesting: “I help my students and their families have their best possible futures, including doing their best on the SAT and ACT Exams.” This is

why he has written four books/ guides to help his students outside of the exams. The image on page 24 are the top sections of the covers. Classes taught at the East Lake Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, about 10 minutes from Mitchell High School and 3 minutes from East Lake High School. Dr. Adams has helped students from 20 public high schools in Greater Tampa Bay, and 10 private high schools including Berkeley, Tampa Prep, and Farragut.
