Trinity Family Physicians Celebrates 14 Years Serving Trinity and Beyond

By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Wednesday, September 1, was an ordinary workday for most people. For Dr. Stephanie Eldridge and Dr. Amir Shirmohammad

(Dr. Shirmo), it was an anniversary. It was the celebration of a dream that began 14 years ago and culminated with opening a private practice in Trinity, Florida.

One only needs to hear the excitement and enthusiasm in the husband and wife physicians’ voices when they talk about their practice to know just how much they adore

Tech Talk with Bob: Give the Gift of Security for FREE

If you have been following the last two issues of Tech Talk, then you are familiar with the Cybersecurity Scan my company offers to keep you safer online. The response to this service has been overwhelming. Folks are stepping up and taking control of their online security posture. Some folks, who were sure their computers were free of threats, were shocked when they realized their computer was not as secure as it should be. Every one of them immediately took the measures my cybersecurity team recommended to eradicate the still harboring security threats. Several of my clients have asked if I offer something like “gift certificates” for these Cybersecurity Scans. They felt that a cybersecurity scan would be of great value and practical sense. Plus, it shows your gift certificate recipient how much you truly do care about their safety. One thing is for

certain… your gift will be unique. And you can be pretty sure they don’t already have one. Oh, and by the way, one size fits all. So, no returns necessary! All your gift recipient needs to do is call me to schedule an appointment to drop off their computer. We are located about 2 miles north of the intersection of State Road 54 and Little Road in the New Port Richey/Trinity area. My cybersecurity team will perform a through security scan of the computer, so we know for certain whether the computer is clean or not. These security scans have taken from a few hours to a few days to complete. Regardless of the time it takes to scan, one certificate is good for one complete scan of one computer system, on my repair bench. Once my cybersecurity team completes the scan, I will personally review the results with the gift recipient. If any security remediation needs to be performed, I will discuss all options for any additional work that may need to be done. I want your gift recipient to have all the facts about their computer’s security health so they can make a well-informed decision based on what solution best serves them. Also, please understand that

you and the gift recipient are under no obligation to do anything further after I review the results of the scan with them. So, here’s the moneysaving offer for the upcoming holidays. Buy one Cybersecurity Scan Gift Certificate and get one FREE. Yes, I will scan two computers for the price of one! You can give both certificates away to two friends, or you can get your computer scanned and give a friend the gift of a FREE scan. One gift certificate is only $100. But you will get two Cybersecurity Scan Gift Certificates when you purchase one between now and the end of December 2021. We can accommodate phone orders and accept all major credit cards. Call 727-5344000 to place your order. Never forget, cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Whether you are a business or non-profit who keeps records about clients,

customers, prospects, employees, vendors, sales, budgets, inventories… you get the idea. It is your responsibility to protect your personal network, your computer’s operation, and your data. Even a home user who may only keep records about club members, kids’ sports leagues, volunteer work, filing your income taxes, or just ordering a pizza using your credit card on your home computer is a target. Are you certain your computer is safe? You don’t have to do this alone my Friend. My staff and I are here to keep your computer safer and keep it running. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re only a phone call away. Call us anytime at 727534-4000. Shears story continued from page 1 Trinity, has exceeded even her expectations after the first five years. After surviving the Covid-19 pandemic, her growing business and personal stylists’ followings are stronger than ever thanks to the friendly, professional services she and her employees provide to every client at Shears of Trinity. Why not read some of the recent online testimonials below about what some of your friends and neighbors think about this modern, full-service, five-star-rated hair salon? With, as Lori noted, an impressive “95% client retention rate,” she complimented her staff. “I don’t do it alone.” She assured me. Rebecca B: “Lori always does a fantastic job! She is so talented and professional. The shop is beautiful, and the staff is very friendly.” Lori C: “Love Shears always beautiful here.” Gabrielle S: “Great service and atmosphere.” Kim C: “Meghan did a wonderful retouch and color. My hair looks great! I highly recommend her, Lori the Owner, and Shears of Trinity.” Tiffany B: “My daughters and I have been going to Lori for over five years. We love her! She is a hair Goddess! We wouldn’t trust any other salon but Shears of Trinity!” TerriLynn M: “Gabrielle did an amazing job with my hair.

10

NOVEMBER 2021

She listened to my concerns about my hair color and made great suggestions. My color is now so pretty, and I love the haircut as well. The salon is beautiful and very clean. I will definitely become a regular customer!” Lori McEwen: “Lori is amazing at her job! She did exactly what I wanted, and it’s stunning! She is very friendly and made me feel so comfortable to talk to during my hair process. I highly recommend this salon to any new to the area!” These are just a few of the many testimonials available to read online about the outstanding services and latest hairstyles offered by the talented folks at Shears of Trinity. Lori noted in a recent interview that the facilities, although already modern, are undergoing a facelift with new chairs, improved lighting, and other client-friendly updates to make a great salon experience even better. Situated at 4207 Little Road in the Heritage Plaza on the southbound side of the road, between CR 54 and St. Lawrence Ave., Shears of Trinity is conveniently located in their modern salon where their stylists specialize in the latest hair trends. Their advanced color correction and balayage expertise are exceptional. If you need color, Shears of Trinity should be your destination of choice! Stylist Gabrielle Sinchi offered a word of caution to the public regarding hair dyeing: “Haircare is specialized with each individual,” she noted. “Don’t box dye at

home!” She warned. “Those products contain metallic salts and dyes, and the result can be uneven hair color that can be expensive to correct.” As the leading color specialist, the Shears of Trinity team does a lot of corrective colors while still providing services that many other salons do not, like perms and keratin treatments. “We are committed to hair care in general,” stylist Meghan Canavan added. “Without drama, our clients feel comfortable at our salon. Cleanliness is also essential to all of us.” Master stylist and owner Lori McEwen comfortably referred to her employees and clients as ‘family’ throughout the interview. “We are always open to having new clients join our salon’ family.’” Walk-ins are always welcome. Shears of Trinity provides live videos on their Facebook page for clients to stay abreast with the latest specials and retail products. Their newsletter also lets everybody know what is going on. “If we have any giveaways or specials, we let them know,” she said. Lori and Shears of Trinity also are active members of the local community, taking part in many

of their charitable functions. Owner Lori emphasized the role of continuing education for both her and her stylist employees, noting the importance of learning the latest styles and trends. With an ideal mix of stylist experience (herself and two others), she said she is still looking for one more stylist to share the load. Still, she emphasized the need for any potential employee to fit comfortably into the existing friendly salon dynamics. The youngest team member, salon assistant Alize Rosariov, echoed the friendly attitude you can expect at Shears of Trinity. “We want everyone to feel cared for,” she emphasized. For the convenience of their clientele, Shears of Trinity offers several incredible amenities, including Wi-Fi, a snack bar, beer, wine, and disabled access. Parking is always free. For further information and hours of operation, visit their Facebook page at your convenience. Being Thankful This Thanksgiving By: Joy Bergman You have a mop in one hand, and you’re grabbing the gravy off the stove with the other. “No!” You growl as you frantically glance up at the clock. “This may be a holiday, but I’m so frustrated!” Sometimes we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, that we miss the whole point of what we’re celebrating. With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s important to remember why we celebrate. After all, this is the time that we get to spend with our loved ones. This is the time where we gather around the table and say grace. And most importantly, this is the time where we put aside all the everyday hassles, turn off the electronics, and be grateful for who we are and what we have. So I encourage you to put that mop down for a second, and practice thankfulness. After all, as famous author Kurt Vonnegut once said, “Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” Not to mention, being thankful is good for your health, according to PositivePsychology.com. So, without further ado, let’s examine some ways we can practice thankfulness in our everyday lives! THANKFULNESS EXERCISES: 1). Write down

14

NOVEMBER 2021

everything/everyone that you’re grateful for. “This time of year – as cliché as it sounds, I’m a little extra thankful for family and friends that God has placed around me.” - Aliesa B. What are you thankful for?! Maybe it’s someone/something that makes you smile, like a good friend, an old photograph, or just a nice steaming cup of hot cocoa. Consider all the people who have helped you in the past, whether it was a friend who gave you advice or a coworker who believed in you. Positive Psychology suggests listing what you’re thankful for from a specific time frame, such as this past week, etc. Get more inspiration from https:// positivepsychology.com/ gratitude-exercises/. 2). Go outside. “I am also thankful for the beauty of nature.” - Mary-Beth L. Take a walk or a bike ride and appreciate the little things around you. Watch the autumn leaves play gracefully on the ground and feel the peaceful breeze. There are many local parks to visit, either with a pet, a friend or family member, or on your own. You can always write down or draw what you saw on your adventure afterwards. 3). Read it and Smile. “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts... and be ye thankful.” - Colossians 3:15. While reading is not

everyone’s strong suit, ancient historical texts offer advice on the importance of having a grateful heart. Try reading something everyday that makes you thankful, whether it’s a quote from the internet or a handmade card. If it helps, write down some gratefulness quotes and place them around the house. 4). Create a Family activity. “How often do families get together? [Thanksgiving’s] the biggest family gathering of the year…” - Alexandra A. With Thanksgiving around the corner, get the group to say what they’re thankful for around the table. After the big meal, consider having a family game night or doing a craft. Being surrounded with loved ones and having fun is another reminder of how blessed we are. 5). Cook together. “[I’m thankful for] good food,” -

Gail B. Cooking is fun, but it’s best not to do it all by yourself. Instead, spend a little time with loved ones searching for a recipe that everyone would enjoy. You can even create your own family recipe by having everyone name an ingredient that they would like to include. This is a fun way to indulge in the little moments. Work together and enjoy your time together – even if it’s a mess! 6). Pay it Forward. “I think some people don’t count their blessings and realize that if you have love, you’re richer than most kings of old.” - Tony B. While we are very blessed to have the things we have, some people, even in our own backyards, are not as fortunate. So if you would like to bless someone else this year, consider donating to groups like Metropolitan Ministries. The caring organization needs your

7). Show loved ones you care. “Think less about ourselves and more about the ones we love,” - Anthony B. While you can always call or text someone to show them how much they mean to you, some people like Sandra L. From CaringBridge. org suggest writing a handwritten letter. It’s unique, and will show the person that you took the time to appreciate him or her. Other ideas include making a craft, baking a treat, or even just inviting someone out for a walk or some cider. With the

current teacher shortage, teacher Jewel D. suggests giving your teachers “a big thank you.” Get more ideas at: https://www.caringbridge. org/resources/how-to-showsomeone-you-love-them/ We at Tampa Bay News & Lifestyles are very thankful for all of those who support us and contributed to this article. own general manager, Jim O’Reilly, says, [“I’m grateful for] all of the wonderful people I get to meet and talk to in this awesome profession that I’ve been blessed to work in for 18 years.” And finally, I’m thankful for you – our readers! May you be filled with love, peace, and thankfulness, this holiday season and beyond!

Running for the Win: Senior Kayla Groppe runs to victory in cross country thanks to help from her teammates and her family

By Emma Diehl Senior cross country star Kayla Groppe is the latest female Gregg Schindler Athlete of the Month. Groppe is one of the top cross country team members, constantly breaking records of previous students, setting her own personal records in the process. Groppe is not the first runner in her family. Both her mother and father were runners in high school. “My parents both ran in track and cross country, so they both understand. They both push me, and they understand better than any-

one else [what cross country is like],” Groppe said. While her parents have played a part in her success, Groppe also attributed much of her success to her coaches, namely Coach Alan Parmenter, who named Groppe honorary team captain this year. “She makes everyone around her better as she competes with herself and teammates with the understanding that the work put in at practice translates into success in competition. She has high standards and expectations for herself and that helps others to excel,” Parmenter said.

Photo by Bella Melby-Mazzei As she sprints past cheering parents, Kayla Groppe (‘22) pushes herself to the finish line at River Ridge High School on Sept. 25. During this cross country season, Groppe has pushed herself to the limit, setting new records for herself and Mitchell. “I took two minutes off of my personal record from last year, and I broke the record for the tenth best cross country time at Mitchell,” Groppe said. Along with running cross country, Groppe also participates in track and field events, is a member of the Marching Mustangs, and is a dual enrollment student. “The most important thing is time management. It’s not hard if you have everything planned out, but when you start letting go, that’s when it starts getting chaotic and stressful,” Groppe said. The cross country team competed at districts this

year, and even took a trip to Tallahassee for one of their meets this season. At their meet on Oct. 23, the girls took first place in their group, and the boys team came in second for the male division. With the team being so close, Groppe considers the athletes more than just friends. “It’s like a family bond. It’s a whole other level of bonding. We’re so close, it’s just like a family. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my teammates and my coaches,” Groppe said. While Groppe does plan to continue in her studies and her athletic career, she has yet to commit to a fouryear university. Congratulations to Kayla Groppe, the newest Gregg Schindler Female Athlete of the Month.

Leading to Learn: The Outstanding Senior at J.W. Mitchell High school is recognized by Gregg Schindler for her superb contributions to the school and community.

By Ashley Hoskins A member of nine clubs at J.W. Mitchell High school and an officer in five of them, Bebel Vieira provides support for her community throughout the year while organizing events for the student body. Not only does she remain a member in good standing, but she serves as President of National Honor Society, Executive President of Student Council, and Vice President of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), among other leadership roles. “I’ve always tried to be as active in the school as I can, whether it’s through clubs or helping other students. One of my favorite things to do is to orientate new students. I’m really proud of my school and for participating in all the ways that I can,” Vieira said. Adviser of the National Honor Society, Denise Crabtree worked with Vieira to plan a fundraiser for healthcare workers during the month of October for their ICU campaign project. “She’s a role model for others to get involved. She works with all the committees to get the work done that’s needed and she’s good

at getting her peers to step up and become interested. It’s a really good quality in a leader and for her age. It’s very impressive. She does it in a way that is collaborative and it’s going to serve her very well in life,” Ms. Crabtree said. Due to hard work and dedication, Vieira was chosen as Outstanding Senior for the Class of 2022 by her fellow classmates and the staff at J.W. Mitchell High

School. ““I was shocked. I think that all of the nominees were amazing students. I was just super happy and honored to be on the list with everyone,” Vieira said. She will be recognized at graduation in June with a plaque. In her submission for Outstanding Senior, Vieira outlined what club membership has given her. “It has taught me that to be an outstanding leader, friend, student, and citizen is to make individuals feel inspired and valued. It is to pass joy and knowledge. It is knowing that by putting energy into others, you are in turn giving more to yourself,” Vieira wrote. Vieira continues to strive for excellence as she furthers her plans to attend a four-year university to major in English or International Science along with maximizing her potential throughout her academic career. She credits those around her for a measure of her success. “All my friends and family, specifically a bunch of teachers that have supported me and have been my rock. It’s really nice to have that sense of family,” Vieira said.

Trinity Family Physicans- story continued from page 1 generations of families from Trinity and beyond. “It’s been an amazing experience,” said Dr. Shirmo. “We feel very blessed to have the opportunity to serve the Trinity area in particular, but also the Tampa Bay area for as long as we have. That’s been a truly humbling thing for us – to have not only patients come to you but to have them refer their loved ones - their spouses, their children, their parents, their grandparents, their neighbors, their coworkers, and their friends. They put their reputation on the line to refer people to us, and it is so touching to us to be able to take care of multiple generations.” With patients from elementary school to senior citizens, it’s often like a healthcare version of “Cheers” in the doctor’s office. Before the regulations of the pandemic, sometimes an entire block of neighbors would see each other in the waiting room. Reunions are not limited to Trinity patients; Tampa patients have the same experience. “It’s so neat. That carries on from the waiting room to the hallway in the back when they run into each other. It’s really fun to see and brings a smile to everyone’s

20

faces when patients who know one another are coincidentally booked on the same day,” Dr. Shirmo said. “That’s the kind of practice we have and how we’ve grown over the years. It’s always so rewarding and touching with these experiences. I think it all comes down to how honored we are that we’ve earned their trust and respect. No matter the location or time of day, they’re willing to block that time out for their own health, but most importantly, trust us to be along that journey with them.” Long before Covid forced practices to reduce inoffice treatment, Trinity Family Physicians was ahead of the curve, allowing their established patients to meet the doctors virtually from the convenience of their home or office. Even a lunch break in the patient’s car or at their child’s sports event was a chance to have a private one-on-one doctor’s appointment without needing to drive to the practice. The doctors understand their patients have demanding schedules, and not all appointments require an in-office visit. Patients can easily click on the link supplied in a text message or email and connect with the doctors via laptops, tablets, or smartphones. The response to the teleappointments has been overwhelmingly positive. One hundred percent of

patients polled that have used the service would use it again. It has allowed patients who were not exceptionally punctual in returning appointments to be more attentive to their personal healthcare. “Healthcare in this time has changed dramatically. information for healthcare, it’s really quite amazing,” he said. “We didn’t miss a beat at all. Our patients continued to get the care they needed without sacrificing any lag in time for treatment because of our telehealth option. Despite everything that they might hear on the news and social media about Covid, the beautiful and consistent thing for us is that our patients continue to trust us and come to us for advice and guidance for themselves and their loved ones.” Trinity Family Physicians is located at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. at 1817 Cypress Brook Dr., Suite 101 in Trinity. Caring for Your Diabetic Foot Pain Did you know that about 34 million people in the United States are living with diabetes? That’s about one in every ten Americans. Diabetic patients have a unique set of health concerns and potential complications. Along with an increased risk to develop problems with their eyes, kidneys, nerves and circulation, complications can also impact their feet. Podiatry physician, David Fine, DPM, has expert information and advice on how to best care for your feet if you have diabetes. How Does Diabetes Affect Your Feet? Consistently high blood sugar levels can cause gradual damage to your

blood vessels. This restricts blood flow to other parts of your body, including your feet. You can develop diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage, anywhere in the body. Neuropathy in diabetic patients most commonly affects their feet. “Patients might have pain, tingling and burning sensations. They might even lose all sensation in their feet,” says Dr. Fine. When this happens, pain wouldn’t alert you to cuts or sores on your feet, increasing the risk of infection. In the worst-case scenario, infections that don’t heal along with poor circulation can lead to gangrene, and your doctor might have to amputate a toe, foot or leg

to stop its spread. Dr. Fine says, “One of the most challenging conditions we treat are patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This can be very disconcerting to the patient and is often a red flag. Loss of protective sensation can lead to balance problems, foot infections, ulcers and musculoskeletal and neurovascular conditions like charcot disease in the later stages.” Signs of Diabetic Foot

Problems Make sure to bring any of these symptoms to your doctor’s attention right away: • Blisters • Calluses or corns • Changes in skin color on feet • Cracks between your toes • Developing bunions • Ingrown toenail • Loss of sensation in your feet or legs • Peeling or cracking on the soles of your feet • Sores that don’t heal

for you like family. As Dr. Fine says, “We use the latest technologies in treating these conditions. As diabetes can be a multi-system complex disorder, we work side by side with primary care, endocrinology, vascular surgery, neurology, wound care and our nutritionists.”

• Swelling in your feet or legs • Thickened or yellow toe nails • Tingling, pins and needles sensation in your feet Keeping Your Feet Healthy Diabetes is a challenging condition and it’s important to take care of yourself. “Be sure to give your feet the attention they need every day as you continue watching your diet and taking your medicine,” says Dr. Fine. The first key to caring for your feet with diabetes is to keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range. Here are some more tips to follow to keep your feet healthy if you or someone you care for is living with diabetes: • Always wear shoes or slippers • Check your feet every day

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: GOOD NEWS ABOUT EXAM BLUES I learned that a leading private high school used the worst SAT prep book on the market today and the students were bored to death. In other words, prep classes are seen as “fluff” breaks between the real “academic” work at school … yet the SAT and ACT results often have more impact on students’ future (admissions and scholarships) than most classes in high school.

By Dr. Wayne Adams Now that fall is in full swing, high school students are caught up in a frenzy of studies and activities. MOST SENORS are in the throes of college applications and making preparations to take a final reound of SAT/ACT Exams. MANY JUNIORS are wondering about their PSAT Exam results and how to improve. MANY SOPHOMORES have started thinking about how they will prepare for the rigors of college applications and exams in their futures. EVERYONE is thinking about Bright Futures’ Scholarships – which can mean around $18,000 - $25,000 for tuition and some additional costs at UF, FSU, USF, UCF, and other public universities in Florida. Plus, this award can be a powerful negotiating tool when talking with private universities inside and outside of Florida when families know how to use it – as shown in my Negotiating with Colleges Guide that every one of my students receives. This has helped many of my families save $1,000 to $10,000 a year in college costs. Shortly after the last SAT Exam, I received this email from one of my students: “The SAT went well today for me. I followed all of our plans and your mental coaching was especially effective today (I felt like I was in control and I used our vision imagining mind clearing technique). I finished every section with time left and there were very few questions I didn’t understand, so I feel great about this attempt. Thank you for all your help this far, and I look forward to our future work. Thanks for your mentorship and efforts.” Also, I always receive many calls from parents and students about this time for what I call

the “EXAM BLUES”. The cause is that a strong student, often in IB, multiple AP classes, or dual enrolled; did not score at the level expected on their SAT or ACT Exam earlier in the fall; or on their PSAT in October. The inevitable questions are “Why”, and “What can we do about it?”

THREE MAJOR REASONS STRONG STUDENTS DON’T SCORE WELL ON THE SAT, ACT, AND PSAT

In my experience helping students improve their SAT and ACT scores, there are three major reasons. Reason #1: Most high school students lack key fundamentals such as having had phonics, grammar, “recall” vocabulary, critical thinking, and the mathematics needed to do well on these exams. For example, it is unusual to find students who can correctly use basic punctuation such as commas and semicolons. Reason #2: Educational directions in most high schools do not match what is required to do well on the SAT and ACT. For example, pre-calculus, most geometry, and most algebra courses poorly prepare for these exams. The fact is that most students have had all the arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry on these exams by the tenth grade. Reason #3: Most Prep Classes in high school are woefully inadequate. Recently,

WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT

The Good News: I consistently find that students respond incredibly well and improve when they become both teacher and student as in a college seminar at the junior or senior level where I am their coach. My role is to quickly help them determine where they need to work and to be a resource as they progress. Lecturing is no substitute for determining a student’s baseline level and then structuring their learning around their needs. It very satisfying to see their motivations soar when their perspective changes from “Can I do this?” to “I can do this well.” and then to “Let me show you how well I can do.” They discover that real competition is internal and - when they do their best - external results take care of themselves. Learning the strategies often result in comments like, “Cool” and “That makes it a lot easier”. More important, they learn how to “learn for a lifetime”.

REWARDING COMMENTS

“I wanted you to know that my SAT score just came back and I got a 1430. What a jump. Thanks so much for all your help with the exam, and the many ‘life lessons’ we discussed during classes. “In one of my high school classes, the teacher asked how we had done on the ACT. My

classmates were very surprised when I said ‘32’. Several asked who had helped me, and I gave them your name and phone number.” “My college essay is far better now. Thank you!” “Our family is working together through your book How To Survive And Thrive As A New Freshman At A Secular University. Things have changed a lot since we went to college. Thanks for helping us prepare for what is coming soon.” If You Would Like To Talk More About Your Student … Please contact me at 727-253-0639 or send me an e mail at wwa0811@ mykolab.com.
