Surprisingly, Carmelita’s owner Jose Salazar Jr. feels nothing but blessed these days, despite everything happening with the current pandemic. Boos, Breasts, Bolts, & Votes! The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it illness, death, and a “new normal” that includes social distancing and wearing masks—not to mention significant disturbances to many families’ every day lives. With fall already here and the countdown to Halloween on, many parents are left wondering, is Trick-Or-Treating canceled for 2020? The short answer would be, probably not. The long answer; it’s not going to be the same. It’s going to look and feel very different than in previous years, and it will vary a lot depending on where you live. In Pinellas County, where I currently reside, we have a Facebook group for our community to stay on top of whatever is going on in our neighborhood. Some concerned parents decided to get online and ask if there would be anyone interested in still celebrating Halloween this year. The response was incredibly positive despite the pandemic situation. Many neighbors were open to trick-ortreaters knocking on their doors, while others informed everyone that they would be placing bowls with candy outside their homes for the little ones to pick a few and move on to the next property. Whether you decide to partake on the Halloween festivities this year, don’t forget coronavirus guidelines are still in effect, social distancing, wearing a mask, and properly sanitizing/hand-washing. Try considering costumes with masks already incorporated, or that would allow a mask to be worn appropriately against the face to provide the best protection, and always allow proper hand hygiene to be performed after every house visit. Experts also agree that all adults should even be wearing masks if going door to door to help reduce transmissions of the coronavirus. Another thing you could try would be making individual baggies containing a few pieces of candy for every kid, and instead of having them place their little hands in your candy bowls, hand them each a goodie bag and a sanitizing wipe to go along with it!

This month let’s also try to focus our attention on something else aside COVID, Trump, and Biden. Whether you identify as a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, always be respectful and kind to everyone, because you don’t know their struggles. There is never a need for name-calling, bullying, destroying property, or belittling anyone because their beliefs differ from yours. Remember, we all want what’s best for our loved ones and our country, even if we disagree on how to get it. Let’s shift our attention to more prominent causes that can bring us closer as a community instead of dividing us! Did you know that October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness month? It’s a yearly international health campaign organized by significant charities all over the world to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. Together, we can raise awareness by participating in different local walking/ running events, by donating to various charities, by providing emotional support to those affected by the disease, by sharing valuable information, by promoting health check-ups with our friends all over social media, or only by repping pink. Every year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events unite communities with a shared determination to save lives from breast cancer - all while raising money to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer through research and early detection. Through October, tune into www.facebook.com/TampaStrides to participate in several fun virtual activities that support this vital cause. I want to conclude by saying Congratulations to our Tampa Bay Lightning for becoming Eastern Conference Champions and making it to the Stanley Cup Finals! By the time you read this, hopefully, the Stanley will be tanning on our beautiful Florida beaches soon. Go Bolts!!! Until next time,

Carla M. Dubis Tedeschi.

Let Authentic Concepts Kitchen and Bath Design Bring Your Dreams to Life By Deborah Bostock-Kelley During the pandemic, many people stuck at home have discovered imperfections in their homes, especially where they spend most of their time – the kitchen and bathroom. Owner and creator of Authentic Concepts Kitchen and Bath Design, Glenn Rumer, along with several skilled designers, have been busy making homeowner’s dreams come to life. “(Customers) have been banging down our doors, and we’re doing our due diligence to make sure everyone is safe. We meet the requirements so that Anyone we bring into the customer’s house is masked and healthy, no fevers, and everyone checks out. We make sure

everyone is safe. It’s business as usual, just with a safe side.” Founded in 2015, Glenn wanted to build a company that was a one-stop-shop for the consumer and the antithesis of other competitors that he’d worked. Glenn prides himself on not merely saying ‘the customer comes first,’ but proving it over and over, as noted by his 5-star reviews and over 2000 customers, nearly half from repeat work and referrals. “My biggest thing is quality and service, standing behind what we say and what we do,” he explained. “I surround myself with products that I’ve researched in the last 20 years and have confidence in selling a product we stand behind. Our customers know that they are not going to have issues with

the products we sell.” Authentic Concepts sells seven different lines of cabinetry, which allows the company to be more diversified to meet its client’s individual needs as far as

style, construction, quality, and price point. “This allows us to fit into what the customer’s budget might be.” Whether a client seeks a

minor update or a floor-toceiling remodel, Authentic Concepts Kitchen and Bath Design makes the process as seamless as possible. Though remodeling can be a disruptor to your home life, Glenn makes sure all products are accounted for before beginning to ensure no slowing down due to missing products. A professional job is completed as quickly as possible to allow the client to return to his renovated dream space to enjoy for life. Glenn said that now is the time to schedule remodels to prepare for Christmas or New Years. Each client, new or returning, receives the same gold star service. After a visit to the showroom or a telephone call to determine the client’s style and color palette, a socially-distanced in-home

consultation is scheduled to survey the home, get measurements, and brainstorm ideas. “This allows our designers to pull together a palette that will complement their life and the space that we’re putting in.” After the in-home visit, the design is recreated in a state-ofthe-art 3-D rendering computer program for the customer to review and see from different angles. Tile, countertop, cabinets, paint, fixtures, and lighting are brought together in a visual display in the showroom for the homeowner to get a feel for what their future space could look like. Glenn said 2020 brought back the light to medium woods tones, while greys and white continues to be a client favorite in the kitchen. He recommends

a home that the customer plans to live in for a long time, spending a little more on the frontend to benefit in the longterm. “It’s not like you’re going to redo your kitchen again to get what you wanted. You’ve already spent the money, so you’re going to spend it all again? That doesn’t make sense. It’s important to make sure the decisions you make today are ones you can live with for the rest of your life.” Glenn said that having real designers separates him from others who only have salespeople. Unlike some of his competition, his design staff consists of educated, degreed interior designers, ensuring the most satisfactory quality service when they are creating the clients’ dream spaces. “Anyone can come out and sell you cabinets. We have true designers that can see the potential of the space, and we

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

can show that to people. We have that wow factor. We say what we mean, and we stand behind it, which is lost in most businesses today. We give our customers something to take pride in, from the day we finish ten to 20 years from now. Nearly half of our business is referral and repeat, and we strive to maintain that.” For information on a remodel for your home, visit https:// authenticconceptsdesign.com/ and let the talented designers at Authentic Concepts Kitchen and Bath Design bring your dreams to life. 12-month, no payments, nointerest financing is available. Blocking breakaways on and off of the field Gary Shepard strives toward college football with his accomplishments over the last four years and the support of his coach and teammates. By Emma Rogers Gary Shepard commits to the leader and player he is on the football field and on campus, which landed him his spot as the Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency October Male Student-Athlete of the Month. On Sept. 25, he helped guide his team to a 61-3 victory against Cypress Creek High School with his offensive plays that ensured holes opened for the runners to get through the opposition’s defensive line. Shepard has worked hard and earned his positions as a center and long snapper long before his freshmen year, and continues to have the same drive he started with as a player. “My goal is to go to school and play college football. I work out every day and I train to play center. I’m trying to play at the next level to pursue a football career,” Shepard said. Shepard made waves his freshman year by catching the eye of Head Coach Andy Schmitz, during tryouts. Shepard made an impression that led to his placement on the 2017 varsity team as a center. “When he was a freshman we could tell immediately that he was physically more ready than most freshman. He was stronger than anyone else in his class, but once we had him in practice we also noticed how coachable he was,” Coach Schmitz said. Since the 2017 season, Shepard has continued to train to further develop his

skills as a player, which set him up to be an example for incoming players. He earned his title as a captain for the 2019 varsity his junior year due to the influences he had as an underclassman. Shepard continues to push himself and the team as he received the captain title again for the 2020 varsity season. “Gary has gone from being a freshman that followed what the upperclassmen said and did, to being a leader himself. He’s a two-year captain, which is very rare in our program. Usually, captains are only seniors. Gary is going to graduate here having played in

and won more varsity games than anyone else in program history. He will always be remembered as an important player in this program,” Coach Schmitz said. As Shephard continues to push himself towards his future career in football, Coach Schmitz feels that he has given Shepard the tools to succeed playing at the next level in college football. “I’m not sure Gary needs any more advice from me. He’s gotten plenty of positive and negative feedback over the years. He has turned into a hard-working and solid young man,” Coach Schmitz said. Gary Shepard continues to strive toward success, both on and off the field, and expresses valuable qualities as a leader and fervent teammate, resulting in his recognition as Athlete of the Month. Shepard prepares as a senior, set to graduate in June, although we will lose an important aspect to the team, the college Shapard decides to go to will certainly gain a hard-working and valuable player.

Work on the court brings rewards Chosen for her skills as a leader and teammate, Cayla Heckroth demonstrates excellence. By Layne Mazur On and off the court, Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency Female StudentAthlete of the Month, Cayla Heckroth, finds herself immersed in the sport she plays best: volleyball. Playing for the J.W. Mitchell High School varsity team since freshman year, and beginning volleyball in sixth grade, the junior finds the greatest part of her experience as a volleyball player to be the everlasting impact of playing such a close-knit team sport. “Volleyball is my happy getaway. I have created lifelong friendships and life skills and lessons, and I have become a better person because of it. It is so much fun and I know I can continue on playing through my life and hopefully pass it on to my kids,” Heckroth said. Heckroth worked to be at the level she

plays at today. Outside of school, Heckroth improves her skills through open gyms, volleyball camps, private lessons, and beach volleyball. She also plays club volleyball this year at the local Trinity Volleyball Club. “I have put in so much work for volleyball. It takes up so much of my time and I get to spend it with all of the friends I have made throughout the years,” Heckroth said. Finding her best position as outside hitter, Heckroth also specializes in defense on the court. From blocking hits from the other team to volleying balls from the back line to the setter, Heckroth’s talent illustrates itself, as she starts and ends most games alongside her friends on the court. Coach for the varsity team, Lea Weber, chose Heckroth based off her position on the team. “She is a leader on and off the court as well as a very good athlete,” Weber said. Despite the delayed season due to COVID-19, the varsity group worked any way they could to practice safely in order to prepare for their season. Through these efforts to bond through the restrictions, the team became very close. “The connection us girls have on and off the court and our amazing coaching staff make me have a good feeling about this year,” Heckroth remarked. Heckroth plans

With her persistence to be better than she was the day before, Heckroth is only going up. “I don’t know what I would do without volleyball. My coaches, family, friends, and most importantly my parents have given me so much for this sport and I wouldn’t be the same without them,” Heckroth said

Tech Talk with Bob: Another Phish Tale!

Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is one of the many ways cyber criminals can attack you. It is the most popular strategy used by criminals to trick you into voluntarily handing them your personal data, your sensitive information, and sometimes your cash. In this type of attack, the criminal will attempt to extort cash from unwitting people by sending an email threatening to publicly humiliate the email recipient. Here’s an excerpt of one that ended up in my inbox just the other day. “Hello! I am a hacker who has access to your operating system. I also have full access to your account. I’ve been watching you for a few months now. The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited. If you are not familiar with this, I will explain. Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device. This means that I can see everything

on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.” The email continues. “I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence. Why your antivirus did not detect malware? Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.” The email then threatens to release alleged videos of the recipient to all of the recipient’s contacts. “With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks. I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.” Then they go in for the kill. “If you want to prevent this, transfer the amount of $500 to my bitcoin address. After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear from me again. I give you 50 hours (more than 2 days) to pay. I have a notice reading

this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter. If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed. Best regards!” This social engineering technique has swindled cash from some recipients who received this email or one similar to it. Multiple versions of this email are circulating the internet. So, what do you do if one of these emails ends up in your inbox? Immediately delete it.

There really is no way to avoid these emails. Even if you use spam filters some will find their way through. Your best defense is internet safety awareness. As for this phish tale, you’ll be the smart one who got away because you didn’t take the bait. Never enter confidential information into any web site until you know the web site and your computer system is safe. Cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Protecting yourself online is your responsibility, but you don’t have to do it all by yourself. We’re here to help. “Healthcare Associates” - continued from page 1 in Pasco County, continues to maintain its Five Star rating, a testament to his caring expertise, demonstrated concern, and patient satisfaction. When Humana started measuring practices for quality of care in 2014, they ranked Dr. Machhar’s #1 in the state of Florida. His practice focuses on preventing the need for hospitalization by providing critical care from his office. When a patient requires hospitalization, he can see him at both Trinity hospital and several local rehab centers. His established relationships with area specialists allow him to expedite his patient care. Dr. Machhar’s patients have the peace of mind of knowing they can see him personally whenever the need arises. Echoing his father’s desire to provide a consistent continuum of care for patients is Dr. Raj Machhar, the son of Dr. Prakash Machhar. Dr. Machhar is pleased to announce that his boardcertified internist son is joining the practice.

22 OCTOBER 2020

Doctors Raj, and Prakash Machhar both believe it is the physicians role to care for their patients from the initial office visit, potential hospitalization, through out-patient care, to ensure their patients’ a continuum of healthcare. Using his expansive, specialized medical training, Dr. Raj Machhar sees himself as ‘the quarterback,’ employing his Ivy League training to identify and treat patient concerns or refer them to a specialist when necessary. Bringing his own extensive training from multiple prestigious institutions of higher learning, specialized knowledge, background, and experience to this already outstanding practice, Dr. Raj’s membership in prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha in medical school is indicative of his abilities. In college, he graduated Summa Cum Laude, typical of one his many scholastic achievements, and evidence of his desire to be the best doctor possible. While preparing to enter the University of Florida’s Medical School in 2009, Dr. Raj Machhar had the honor of qualifying for their

highly sought after Junior Honor’s Medical program, an honors, seven year accelerated program. He completed his residency at Cornell, receiving outstanding extensive training to further his education and experience. Rotations at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, one of the nation’s most renowned cancer institutes, and Hospital for Specialized Surgery, the top-ranked hospital devoted to orthopedics and the care and treatment of arthritis, only enhanced his ability to help his patients. Read what a few of your friends and neighbor think of the quality of care they have received and will

continue to receive from this talented father and son team. “Dr. Machhar has been our physician for many years. He’s very caring and takes the time to explain and answer any concerns we have. We never feel rushed and we never wait more than a few minutes for our appointment. Dr. Machhar is very thorough with our tests and explaining the results. His staff is very kind and professional, too. We’re very thankful we found Dr. Machhar when we did.” (Notice the emphasis on caring and taking time to explain results) Another of Dr. Machhar’s many satisfied patients

wrote: “Dr. Machhar is very caring takes time to listen to you, he keeps you well informed about your meds, labs etc ,has very caring and knowledgeable staff. He will answer any of your questions at any time. I am so grateful he is my doctor.” “My husband and I have been going to Dr. Machhar for approx 7 years and we couldn’t be happier. He takes the time to get to know you and doesn’t

do any service he thinks is unnecessary and refers to other medical professionals when needed.” “He cares on all levels. He is determined, but not bossy. He is what medicine used to be, he takes his time because he cares. He takes time to talk to you, to comfort or inspire better health for you. Me personally, my health issues require a lot of patience.” (Visit Healthgrades. com for 75 unsolicited

reviews from his dedicated patients). Both doctors want their patients to know that it is their choice to see patients in person daily, hands-on in their offices to provide that personal doctor/patient relationship. With covid-19 a strong consideration, they have taken certain positive, proactive steps to protect their patients from the disease. Scheduled appointments minimize potential exposure. Only one patient is in the waiting room at a time. A nurse advises patients, waiting in the parking lot, when it is their turn. Everyone must wear a mask. Temperature taking is also standard practice. Dr. Raj Machhar credits listening to and watching

his father when he was a child as the impetus for him becoming a physician. He couldn’t follow in better footsteps. “Carmelita’s”

- continued from page 1 easy, but my employees and clients have been amazing at keeping us afloat. Working with masks, especially for our kitchen staff, hasn’t been easy. But everyone has been cooperating and staying positive despite the hard times. They are real troopers, and I am very thankful to have such an amazing team working for the common good.” Jose would also like to express his gratitude to the Lopez Zamora family. “Everyone at Carmelita’s welcomes you to enjoy fresh, authentic Mexican food at affordable prices, in a clean and safe environment for you and your loved ones.” From the moment you walk in, Carmelita’s exudes Mexican vibes, with it’s a bright and colorful decor and familyfriendly atmosphere. You’ll feel transported to Mexico as you enjoy the lively Latin music while the staff, greet you and serve you with a smile you can sense even through their masks. Framed photographs of Mexican war battles, black and white portraits of famous Mexican celebrities, and old school memorabilia, adorn the walls giving Carmelita’s a sense of tradition and nostalgia. Carmelita’s has established the standard in quality Mexican food that’s been hard to beat for over three decades. The taste of Carmelita’s homemade food is authentically indigenous to Mexico. The portions are large, and the prices are affordable. All dinners are promptly served complimentary chips and salsa, which are freshly made daily. The salsa is top-notch, and the chips are always crunchy and warm. Entrees include a large selection of Mexican favorites like tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, chimichangas, burritos, and fajitas. All entrees are served with two sides; rice, refried beans, black beans, pinto beans, charro beans, corn, or a side salad. House Specialties include;

chile rellenos, flautas, tamales, and the famous Mexican Pizza made with a crisp flour tortilla covered with frijoles, ground beef, chorizo, jack and cheddar cheeses, tomatoes and topped with sour cream, guacamole, black olives, and green onions. A vegetarian pizza option is available if you prefer your pizza meatless. Jose and his wife Karla Salazar are the proud owners of the New Port Richey Location, and their story is not only humble and heartwarming but the epitome of the American dream. Born and raised in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Jose H. Salazar Jr. started working at the original Carmelita’s as a busboy when he was only 19 years old. During the time he was employed, Jose showed commitment, dedication, and incredible work ethics, which the owners never took for granted. The fact he was bilingual and able to communicate with clients and staff in English and Spanish, also helped his career tremendously. Jose managed to work his way up from busser to manager; for approximately thirteen years, Jose successfully managed the popular Carmelita’s location on East Bay Dr. in Clearwater, Largo. Jose and Karla’s dream was to own their own business, and in 2008, during the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression of 1929, and with many businesses closing their doors, Jose and Karla took a leap of faith. They risked it all and put their entire life savings into opening up the New Port Richey location. “My wife Karla, who is my right hand and current account manager, was and still is my biggest supporter. It was her encouragement and motivation that got us to where we are today,” says Jose. “Karla reminded me that we came to this country with nothing, so why not take a chance for the possibility of a better future for us and our children, Sebastian

and Sofia. And the rest is history.” The Salazar’s positivity and continuous hard work are remarkable. Today, even in the face of adversity with COVID, Jose and Karla continue to provide their regulars and new visitors with fresh, homemade Mexican food, and impeccable customer service that has made Carmelita’s a Bay area staple. “There are a lot of Mexican restaurants around, but none better than your local Carmelita’s,” says frequent visitor Daryll K. “Over the years, my family and I have visited the many locations, and we’ve never been disappointed in the quality of the food or the friendly service. They are, without a doubt, a five-star Mexican restaurant.” Owning and operating a restaurant requires a lot of demanding work, but Jose and his staff do it all with a smile on their face and gratitude in their hearts. “Owning a restaurant is not easy. It’s extremely challenging. It’s timeconsuming. Karla and I work hard for our family. This way, our children can follow their dreams, just like I followed mine,” says Jose. His son Sebastian is a Biomedical Engineering student at John Hopkins, and his younger daughter Sofia recently graduated high-school and is exploring her college options. If you haven’t had the chance already, check out

the documentary “Un Sueno Mexicano / A Mexican Dream,” filmed and documented by Jose’s brother, Yair A.
