Recently retired art educators, professional artists, and entrepreneurial cousins Debra Campbell and Alene Sirott-Cope were looking for their next big move. Their love of nature photography, mixed media, collage, ic and alcohol ink paintings were helping them pass the time, but they wanted to do something more substantial with their work. both wanted an encore to our careers. Although we hadn’t seen each other in six years, we started talking on a regular basis. It was clear that we were both frus trated that we weren’t producing our own art. As an art educator for 20 years and an adjunct professor at USF, I did art every day, but it was in the service of helping “Kyle Schroeder”

Only a handful of musicians across the country are chosen to participate. While still in high school, Kyle began composing original jazz music with the long-term goal of releasing a jazz Kylealbum.studied jazz saxo phone and music busi ness and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music; he was still composing.Fastforward eight years from when he first wrote his first note to today, and Kyle is making his dream a reality with the release of “Get With It,” his debut contemporary jazz Dedicatedalbum. to his father, whom he lost to cancer in 2019, “Get With It” fea tures nine original compositions and a cover of an Islay Brother’s“Throughoutclassic. the years, I wrote these songs and rede veloped them multiple times. Over the years, I developed my musicianship, songwrit ing, arranging, and produc tion skills on the computer. It turned into something that I’m proud of and something that I’m really excited to share with everybody.” Kyle said that the album title was an invitation. “Come join me on my journey. We’re just starting. Because it’s my first project, I want to invite people everywhere to join in on my future musical endeavors. That’s the inspiration behind the title.”

“If you love what you do and you want to make it happen, anything is possible. Stay consistent, stay inspired, and look for inspiration fromeither other musical artists or really, anyplace you can find inspiration.”Kylecredits his mom Carrie, his dad, and his high school and college mentors, Joel Quina, the late Tom Domato, Gary Keller, and Allon Sams, for helping himfind his path.

If listeners want to get their hands on an actual physical CD copy, it is exclusively available on Kyle’s website at kyleschroedermu sic.com.“We’re doing a big album release party with my band at the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater on the night of the release, Friday night, June 10th and that’s where I’ll be performing live with my group and playing all myoriginalKylestuff.”saidhis favorite selection from the album was difficult to pick because eachsong makes him feel a differ ent “Iway.like power ballads andslower songs, so if I had to pick, my favorites would be “You Complete Me” and“TheWhenOne.”asked what his dad would be thinking of his transition from a tod dler first engaged with jazz music through the car radio to a twenty-four-year-old jazz musician with an album released, Kyle responded, “I definitely think he would be proud of me.”

“Always go with your gut feeling. If your gut feeling says, this is good…stick with it; even if it’s not, quote- unquote, perfect. If it makesyou feel a certain way, and think it sounds really good, stick with it.”

Kyle offered advice to anyone at the beginning of their musical journey.

Kyle paused to reflect. “He’d say, ‘keep it going and always do your best.’ Another thing that he used to say is ‘if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ I love what I do. If I can share the songs I write that are close to my heart with oth ers, I believe I’m following his advice.”

Alene and I started sending each other paintings, copies of things that we’ve done or partially finished work, and the other person would finish it. It began with me sending Alene a foreground, and she would place it on her background, creating a Campbell and Cope painting that looked seamless. It’s like we had the same creative DNA.”

We title the art by using the student’s first name and age. So far, we’ve had seven, nine and ten-year-olds submit art, and it’s beautiful. This is a real-world experience for the kids. The students can design wearable art, and if they want, buy it. After two weeks, the designs are taken down from the site so that it doesn’t actually become part of the Camp bell and Cope line.”

“The students are hav ing a ball, especially with the leggings. They’re learn ing how to design for fabric which is different than just doing a painting. “Both of us have way too much energy. We were climbing the walls while we were waiting for this idea to become a reality. We needed this this focus, and now we’re doing what we love. It’s not work. You can call it a hobby that we do every day, and we’re very serious about our hobby.”
