Visit Ellie’s Family Restaurant for Breakfast or Lunch By Carla Selby Sometimes the most delicious food comes from the least expected places. Located at 12008 Race Track Rd, Ellie’s Family Restaurant is truly a hidden gem. This inconspicuous homey diner, owned and operated by Dino Mihalopoulos and his family, serves American breakfast and lunch staples ranging from pancakes to burgers, in a casual and friendly environment. “Wow, what a great hidden treat,” says Rose K. about her recent visit to Ellie’s. “The staff is amazing, they have great

food at affordable prices and large portions. Everything was very tasty and well prepared. This place is perfect for a casual and homemade breakfast or lunch. Ellie’s is the locals hang out, which is open to everyone. It’s in an industrial park setting, somewhat unknown to firsttime visitors but well worth the visit. We had a large party and everyone was very happy with their meals. The greek omelet filled with gyro meat and feta filled the plate, along with a side of perfectly cooked hash browns. Give it a try, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” See “Ellie’s” on page 12

Do you have a little extra space in your home, a bit of free time, and some love to share? If so, consider becoming a foster parent for a litter of homeless kittens. With the arrival of “kitten season” in early spring, animal shelters and rescue organizations are flooded with kittens who cannot be put up for adoption until they are eight weeks old. These groups rely on the assistance of volunteer foster parents to save lives by providing temporary care. Not only does becoming a volunteer foster parent help busy humane organizations, but it can also be great for you, too. Perhaps you are considering adopting, but aren’t sure if a kitten is right for you. Maybe you travel, and can’t have a “permanent” pet. Or maybe you just want to experience the joy of kittens again and again. I know I did and found a permanent memer of our family in the process; a gorgeous polydactyk cat I decided to adopt and named Santiago, like the main character in the famous Hemingway novel “The Old Man & The Sea.” Whatever your reason, you are sure to find that fostering is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences there is, I can tell you from my own experience. I volunteered with St. Francis Animal Rescue for several months, and watching these baby kitties go from barely eating on their own to running around in their new families’ homes was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Sadly, due to my husband’s allergies, I had to stop fostering, but I still feel very strongly about this particular organization and would like to take this opportunity to share a message in the name of St. Francis: Following last year’s hugely successful premiere KittyCon, St. Francis Society Animal Rescue announces its second annual fan convention devoted solely to the love and rescue of cats. KittyCon Tampa Bay 2019 will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel Tampa Airport - Westshore on Saturday, November 30, 2019 from 11am6pm and Sunday, December 1, 2019 from 11am-5pm. This year’s theme is Meowy Catmas and the fun and informative weekend will feature vendors, entertainment, expert

speakers on cat care and hot rescue topics, Kitty Kosplay, charity auctions, kids’ activities, free product samples and giveaways, cat yoga, and more. Last year’s most popular attraction, the Adoption Room, will be once again filled with adoptable rescued kittens and cats seeking forever homes. The documentary film, “The Cat Rescuers”, will make its Florida premiere at KittyCon. Tickets are on sale now online at: KittyConTampaBay.org. Advance purchase for adult 2-day tickets is $35/$60 at the door. Advance 1-day adult tickets are $20/$30 at the door. Children 12 and under advance 2-day tickets are $8/$20 at the door, and 1-day advance are $5/$10 at the door. For VIP Supporters advance purchase only tickets are $120 for adults and $20 for children and include entry to the White Cat Winter Wonderland Lounge and all VIP privileges. Why would a cat convention concentrate on rescue cats? “Since there are so few events to benefit cat rescue, St. Francis Society, the largest all-volunteer animal rescue in the area, is proud to take the lead in producing KittyCon Tampa Bay,” said Kathy Walvoord, President and Cat Care Coordinator of St. Francis Society Animal Rescue. “The proceeds allow us to continue the lifesaving work we do for neonatal kittens, and sick, injured, and homeless cats in the community.” Established in 1997, St. Francis Society Animal Rescue (SFSAR) is the oldest and largest foster home-based animal rescue in the Tampa Bay Area. It is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue dedicated to saving and improving the lives of homeless cats and, when possible, dogs by providing healthcare and placement into suitable forever homes. SFSAR receives no government funding and depends solely on the generosity of donors to save the lives of cats and dogs who would otherwise be surrendered to shelters, euthanized, or left to die. TECH TALK With Bob: Farewell Windows 7 By Bob Dalles There have been notices of this online, in the newspapers, magazines and television. Come January 2020, Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows 7. So what does this mean if you currently use Windows 7? Quite simply, Microsoft does not intend to make any more repairs to problems found with the Windows 7 operating system. They would love for you to upgrade to their newest Windows operating system; currently Windows 10. But they will no longer provide repairs to Windows 7 with patches and updates. Patches and updates are fixes for vulnerabilities discovered in Windows 7.

6 NOVEMBER 2019

Microsoft has been providing these weekly since Windows 7 was released back in 2009. Patches and updates deal with issues usually concerning your computer system’s performance and security exploits that have been recently discovered and repaired by Microsoft. These patches and updates are vital to keep your computer running smoothly and securely. You have probably been receiving these every week, perhaps without even knowing it. Your computer usually receives them in the background while your computer sits idle or while you are doing some light computing work. This is accomplished through the service referred to as “Windows Update.” So for most users it’s a no-brainer.

The danger of Windows Update being a no-brainer is that some users are not aware of the importance of keeping their Windows operating systems current. If you were not connected to the internet you would not be as much of a target to cyber criminals and therefore would not need to be as concerned about keeping your Windows operating system up to date. But since you

probably do have an internet connection, you will become more and more vulnerable to cyber criminals, as each week passes, once Microsoft’s support ends. Now don’t be alarmed thinking that, all of a sudden, your computer is going to stop working in January. Your computer will continue to work just as it does today. The exception being that after January 14th you will become an easier target for cyber criminals. It has always been my company’s policy to not recommend unnecessary upgrades to clients. Just because a manufacturer releases a new version of something doesn’t mean you need to upgrade to it right away. Plus,

For Advertising Info 813-928-6124 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

I prefer that my clients not spend money on upgrades until they really need to. You need to upgrade when it is feasible both financially and from a security standpoint. So, if you are currently using Windows 7 this is my recommendation to you. If your computer never connects to the internet, and all of your current programs and devices are functioning properly, then you are in good shape. Leave well enough alone. There is little chance your computer will be involved in a cyber attack. However, if your computer is connected to the internet, you must upgrade. I would also recommend that you not hesitate and start planning for this now so you have a smoother transition. If you would like our help call 727-534-4000. Be Safer Out There! Pranique is Holistic Haven in the Heart of Oldsmar By Deborah Bostock-Kelley

From the moment you walk through the doors of Pranique Yoga and Wellness Center, you can feel your shoulders start to relax as the trials of the day begin to recede. You’ve made it to a healing oasis tucked away in Oldsmar - a serene dwelling offering unique services to stressed-out Tampa Bay Area residents and visitors. Now is the time to focus on self-healing rather than sit in all of that regional traffic and stew in your own acidic juices. Instead of being aggravated, you can steep in tranquility by actively making a choice towards balance. Fortunately, Pranique has been created with you in mind offering a one-stop-shop for you to reach your bliss. The experience begins as you’re greeted by a welcoming

smile from the receptionist. The air is scented and you hear the background melodies softly wooing you towards nirvana. Off to the side, you can catch a glimpse of a mystical orange glow emanating from the Himalayan salt cave. The cave is an out-of-this-world getaway away designed to transport you to other places right in your own backyard. It’s a space that beckons you in, to let go of the day, and bathe in its subtle healing properties. One step into this unusual realm, and your transformation has already begun. You’re ready to make positive choices in your life and indulge in the many options at Pranique. Besides the Himalayan salt cave and a full yoga class schedule, the locally owned and operated studio offers many health and wellness

features including Hot Box Detox, Far-Infrared Cocoon, Far-Infrared Sauna, Far-Infrared Jade Massage Bed, and Aqua Massage Bed – each aiding in detoxifying the body, reducing pain, clearing the mind, regulating the nervous system, and boosting immunity. Before you even enter the building, you can start to find your center by walking the meditative Labyrinth, which is the first of its kind in Oldsmar. An ancient universal pattern found in all cultures, a Labyrinth, is a place to escape stress and quiet the mind. Unlike a maze, it is a single circular path that winds its way to the center. Used symbolically as a walking meditation, it promotes selfreflection, holistic healing, and peace work. If you haven’t tried it, maybe this first simple step towards your wellness is the

right one for you to take. After all, yoga teaches that there is no time like the present to begin this sacred journey. There is one very busy lady responsible for sustaining all of the magic to be found. In September 2018, Amy Olshanski bravely took sole ownership of Pranique (which was initially opened in October 2015). Named from combining Prana (breath) and unique, Pranique has become established as a place where men and women of all ages can find emotional, physical, and spiritual healing in a quiet space. Amy has firsthand knowledge of what it’s like to be overworked, and she has dedicated her life to making her place succeed. Recently celebrating her first anniversary, Amy is a firm believer in giving back to the community that

welcomed her. She regularly offers discounts on annual memberships and brings in local experts in their holistic fields for weekend workshops. Pranique’s Facebook page, updated continuously, showcases new events coming to the center. In November, Pranique will begin hosting two special free monthly yoga meditation classes

– one for military personnel and the other for members of The Phoenix, a nonprofit drug and alcohol rehabilitation organization. Pranique is also a local dropoff location for Blanket Tampa Bay, a nonprofit that helps our homeless community. Through December 17, a collection box will be in their rear sitting room to collect new and gently used blankets. With drop-off locations throughout Tampa Bay, it is the 2019 goal of Blanket Tampa Bay to distribute 1500 blankets on Christmas Eve at Trinity Cafe. Amy is the proud owner of two rescue dogs, often official

greeters at the studio, and on December 7, Pranique has partnered with Suncoast Animal League for an afternoon titled “Party for the Pups.” The event features Yappy hour with the pups, a red carpet adoption event with Suncoast Animal League rescue, food, and drinks for humans and dogs, live music with Brett Wilkins, and specials on yoga and other Pranique services. Pranique invites the community to celebrate the joy of pet ownership and maybe even bring a new four-legged friend home. Speaking of going home, when members leave the center, they can take their wellness “to go,” continue the healing and enhance their Pranique experience with a selection of natural CBD products. “The CBD line has been a game-changer for me,” said Amy. Next year brings even more significant and more exciting changes to the studio as yoga

patrons will be able to sign up for the 200hr certified Yoga Teacher Training beginning in January. Students will have the option to simply take their practice to the next level or share what they’ve learned with others. Amy suggests calling to register as space is limited. The Pranique Yoga Teacher Training is also a sponsor of the Annual BREATHE Yoga Cruise in December 2019. Many fantastic opportunities and options for the weary wanderer to find respite and inner solace can be found through the specialized services at Pranique. Even though the darkest time of the year is starting, Pranique is established as a beacon of light in Oldsmar for you to find inner peace. “Namaste, y’all,” said Amy. Pranique is located at 400 North Racetrack Road, Oldsmar. To learn more, call 813-510-4972 or visit praniqueyogawellness.com.

Opportunities to Gather and Give this Thanksgiving Month By Lisa Stephens

While we gather around our tables this month to celebrate Thanksgiving, there are many opportunities in the Tampa Bay area to reach out and help others in need. Just a small amount of your time can go further than you think for someone else. November is also filled with lots of opportunities for families and friends to gather at a number of fall festivals! Mark your calendars now to get out and about to help someone else and have a little fun as well!

Lend a Hand……or Foot

Meals On Wheels of Tampa - Did you know that Meals On Wheels of Tampa serves 850 people a day Monday through Friday? It takes eighty-four drivers to deliver the home-cooked meals that have been prepared in the Meals On Wheels kitchen. A quick drop off and friendly smile is all that’s required. This privately funded organization needs drivers to make deliveries-and Thanksgiving Day is no exception! Can’t drive that morning? Drop off your homemade holiday card(s) to their offices at 550 W Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa and it will be delivered with the food on Thanksgiving Day! This is a great opportunity for kids to get creative and bring a smile to someone they don’t even know. To volunteer, go to their website at www.mowtampa.org to fill out an application. “Ellie’s” Story Continued From Page 1 Ellie’s previous owners, Tom and Ellie, had been wanting to retire, but not before leaving their beloved restaurant in the hands of people who were as responsible and family-oriented as they were. When Tom and Ellie met Dino and his family, they knew that their famous diner was going to be in great hands and that the family principles and values would live on, as well as many of the same delicious and affordable dishes still featured on the current menu. Since Dino took over Ellie’s a little over three years ago, a lot of things have changed, but many have remained the same. The name Ellie’s was a family staple so they held onto it. “The place already had a fantastic reputation in town and

people from the neighborhood knew the name and were loyal to it,” says Dino. “We also kept the back of the breakfast menu the same. It depicts a lovely cartoon of Tom and Ellie, the previous owners. Also, a lot

of our food items are named after the previous owners, and I would not have it any other way,” he added. Ellie’s offers an extensive Breakfast menu, including classics like bacon and eggs,

french toast, biscuits and gravy (which come with a homemade sausage gravy that is to die for!), Tom’s Famous Omelettes (I recommend their greek or their spinach, feta, and onion), and a large selection

of breakfast sandwiches and pancakes and eggs combos. For lunch, Ellie’s variety of wraps, cold or grilled sandwiches, hot or cold subs, melts, and salads, provide enough options to satisfy the entire family. I have had the pleasure of trying many sandwiches at Ellie’s, and they have all been fantastic! They just pile on the meats and cheeses, and the result is always great looking sandwiches that taste freshly homemade. My personal favorite is the Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, and a lot of people agree with me. Remember, Dino is from Philly, so he knows the secrets on how

to make a truly authentic and fantastic Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. “Ellie’s has great diner-style food. Just don’t let the lack of atmosphere scare you off. This is a great locals place,” says Erik A. “Just trust me and try the Philly Cheese, one of the best I’ve found in the area. Food is always made to order and a good value.” “I had the Philly steak and cheese sub and I will say it was top 2 best I ever ate, hands down. I will definitely recommend this place and this sandwich to anyone,” says local guide David L. Make sure you try some of their specials!

they can always count on a good fresh meal and great service at this place, which is what keeps everyone coming back for more, myself included. Perhaps the best part about eating at Ellie’s, is that it quickly becomes your own little goto “hole-in-the-wall” favorite spot. It is not overhyped or crowded, so you can be seated relatively fast and then rest comfortably knowing that the quality of the food and service will always be top-notch. Long time customer James Z. says, “The staff is super friendly, they have the best food in this area!!! I have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed.” Don’t drive around wondering where to eat today, avoid spending money on For those who prefer a hot greasy and expensive fast food meal for lunch, make sure to chains. The couple thinks its extremely important to put down the cell phone and tablet, take a break from the isolation of social media, and facilitate a connection in real life through dance. Dancing can aid in those suffering from dementia and PTSD and has been prescribed as part of therapy for healing. Stefan and Traci are hugely involved in getting children with special needs into a dance and competition. Each Saturday, a dance class is held for children with special needs. They regularly donate to organizations like Revolution Dance and Dancing Lions that work with children with different abilities. Their voices break when they proudly tell of these children who knock a performance out of the park. “I remember watching them thinking about how amazing it is how they learn - what they can do. We love seeing the huge smiles on their faces,” said Traci. Excellence in training for competitive dance is as easy to

to register to be part of their event. Though competitive dance instruction is a large portion of what makes up Dance Excellence Ballroom, it is far from the only

part. Whether a student is seeking private lessons or more interested in a group setting, Dance Excellence Ballroom has a class for all interests, teaching social dancing, the all-important first wedding dance, and classes in American Cha-cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, Mambo, WestCoast Swing, Merengue, Salsa, Hustle, Samba, Argentine Tango, Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and International Cha-cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep. Stefan and Traci also host themed dance parties. The pair’s goal is to create a place where anyone – no matter what the level of experience – can feel safe in a comfortable, nonjudgmental space and have a fun time – the reason why the studio was born. Couples often come as a ‘date night,’ leaving the kids with a sitter to disconnect from the stress of the workday and find something to bring them

Traci said, “In a dance lesson with a couple, you can instantly see where the challenges are, and identify very quickly if they have a good working relationship with one another. Once you work through the rough stops, it becomes an enjoyable thing for them to do together. It not only builds their dance skills, but it bonds them because they have to work together to solve a problem.” Stefan added, “These days, couples have so many different separate activities. We offer a fun way for them to actually be together.” Dance Excellence Ballroom is located in the Oldsmar Plaza at 3730 Tampa Road, Suite 7.
