Mother’s Delivers Mom’s Classics with Elevated Twist By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Three years ago, owners and business partners Joel Olinski and Brad Spoor thought they were building a new restaurant Downtown Tampa. He and Brad met regularly to iron out the details at a restaurant in the Publix shopping complex on Linebaugh Avenue and Race Track Road because both lived in Westchase. One day the restaurant owner inquired, “why don’t you buy this place instead?” Out of the planted seed flourished the scratch kitchen restaurant Mother’s, a fun twist

on all mom’s classic recipes that is celebrating its third anniversary in Westchase with a special week-long celebration on September 9-16. “Mother’s honors all mothers. We’re an elevated Southern comfort,” explained Joel. “We like to rotate the menu yearly from Chicken Pot Pies to Sloppy Joes – everything that brings you back to your childhood and what your mother would make at her house. I wanted to bring something to Westchase that was a one-stop shop – good for families with children and good for adults.” See “Mother’s” on page 8

Welcome back to The Something New Series! If you’re just tuning in let me summarize the premise of what I’m setting out to do. Basically, in each installment of this series I’m boldly going where I’ve never gone before and I’m taking you right along with me. Boldly is kind of an understatement for the adventures I’ve been having, the depths of my comfort

zone have grown and so have I as a woman. This is a blog where we talk about shared experiences in motherhood quite a bit but in this series I adventure out as a woman trying things that have very little to do with also being a mom. I’m doing this for myself but I’m mainly doing this for every mom out there who thinks she can’t have these new experiences because she’s too busy as a wife and mother to do so. I get it, I thought I was too!! See “Tre Med Spa” on page 16

Go Gold This September - Help Bring Awareness to Childhood Cancer September is here and I am still in disbelief. A lot of stores have Halloween and Christmas decorations out on display already, can you believe it? Whether time goes by slowly or incredibly fast for you, for those diagnosed with cancer every new day is a gift. Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S. alone. approximately 16,000 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; and 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and -importantlyto help raise funds for research and family support. No matter how what you can contribute, a little does a lot. You can donate online by visiting the following trusted organizations:

National Pediatric Cancer Foundation: https://nationalpcf.org/ American Childhood Cancer Organization https://www.acco.org Children’s Cancer Research Fund childrenscancer.org. Children’s Cancer Center: http:// childrenscancercenter. org/ All donations to these charities are tax deductible since they have all been designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS. On these websites you can also learn about each organization, read stories from current patients battling cancer, share your own story, or even start a fundraiser. Another way to show your support during the month of September is by wearing gold all month long in your community. Gold is the national color for childhood cancer awareness. Unlike other cancer awareness ribbons, which focus on a singular type of cancer, the gold ribbon is a symbol for all forms of cancer affecting children and adolescents. You can make a safe Gold Ribbon, gold bracelet, gold earrings, charms, etc. purchase online from

a local Tampa company called Fundraising For A Cause: https://www. fundraisingforacause. com/ A lot of the orders ship the same day if placed by 3:00pm. EST. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to the 8th Annual Cheval Cares 5k Run/Walk event held by the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, and presented by Tampa Bay Insurance Partners, The Arndt Family, and JK Cancer Fund, Inc. The Even will be held on Saturday, September 28th at the Cheval Athletic Club and will feature a fundraising 5k through the Cheval neighborhood, followed by a family celebration at the playground and basketball court. Registration fees apply so please visit: https:// secure.qgiv.com/ event/cheval/ for more information and to register for the event. Your registration fee includes an event T-shirt, a spot in the 5k run/ walk, and admission to all the family fun areas. There will be live music, a bounce hose, food trucks, a silent auction and more. I will be attending the Cheval 5k with my family, and I hope to see all of your smiling faces there as well! Tech Talk with Bob: Another Phish Tale!

By Bob Dalles

Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is one of the many ways cyber criminals can attack you. It is the most popular strategy used by criminals to trick you into voluntarily handing them your personal data, your sensitive information, and sometimes your cash. In this type of attack, the criminal will attempt to extort cash from unwitting people by sending an email threatening to publicly humiliate the email recipient. Here’s an excerpt of one that ended up in my inbox just the other day. “Hello! I am a hacker who has access

Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device. This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.”

“With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks. I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.”

The email continues. “I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence. Why your

After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear from me again. I give you 50 hours (more than 2 days) to pay. I have a notice reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter. If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed. Tuna Tartare Diced raw Tuna, Avocados, Toasted Sesame Seeds, Wonton Chips and Ginger Oyster Sauce

“Mothers” Continued from page 1

Joel is not above bussing a table, cleaning the kitchen, or working his celebrated magic behind the bar. With a lifelong hospitality background, originally a master mixologist that placed third in the world for competition, Joel ran The Blue Martini in International Plaza for 17 years. His dream had always been to create a restaurant where the locallysourced ingredients were familiar, but done in a way that raised the bar of how food can be served. Presentation is key to Joel and his chef Alex Rosenblum. A customer eats with their eyes long before the meal touches their lips. “We use a team of people to come up with our food. Plating is a big deal for me. I want everything coming out looking like it is art.” On this particular rainy day in August, Chef Alex delighted editor Carla Selby and I with samples from the kitchen of menu favorites including Tuna Tartare, an appetizer that could easily serve as a meal. A delicious ring of raw tuna, was

nestled below fresh avocado and wonton chips, with toasted sesame seeds and a ginger oyster sauce. The Mother’s Berry Salad offered baby greens, succulent shrimp, sliced strawberries, shaved almonds, creamy goat cheese with a homemade blueberry vinaigrette. I stress homemade here because nothing coming out of the kitchen was coming out on cans or jars, preprocessed. Joel prides himself on daily fresh product deliveries from local purveyors to ensure the very freshest dining experience for his customers. As our table and bellies continued to become fuller, Chef Alex brought out one of the most requested menu items, the three-year Taste of Oldsmar and Taste of Westchase award-winning braised skirt steak risotto featuring skirt steak braised two hours served over traditional risotto and mushrooms, topped with truffle oil and shaved parmesan. As I jealously watched my friend indulge in this stunning presentation of food, I almost wished I still ate red meat and dairy.

“This is comfort food at its finest,” said Joel. “I call this your Ambien. If you’re eating this, you’re knocked out for the evening. Say good night.” My envy was short-lived as Chef Alex was easily able to cater to my particular dietary restrictions and brought to our table an Impossible Burger on a gluten-free Udi bun - a bun that didn’t fall apart the moment it was lifted from the plate - and a side of roasted Brussel sprouts that can only accurately be defined as heaven-sent. Happy can barely describe my reaction to Chef Alex and Joel explaining up to 70 percent of the menu can be made gluten-free, including their incredible pasta dishes. “We cater to every diet,” Joel said. “You will not leave hungry.” Finally, when we knew we couldn’t eat another bite, Joel brought out the popular Poptini, a martini with the Mother’s famous twist - a frozen Popsicle inside the most delicious concoction. Mine was the appropriately-named Mother Pucker. A martini glass with a sugar rim was filled with

Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, Triple Sec, Tres Agave Sour mix, fresh orange and lemon juice with a splash of lemon lime soda served with Limoncello frozen pop. Be prepared to pucker, but in a really good – I want some more – kind of way. Carla enjoyed their Mother Fudger Poptini. Its presentation alone was gorgeous. Chocolate drizzled down the sides of the martini glass. I can only imagine how delicious the cream mixed with Van Gogh Vanilla Vodka, Kahlua, Godiva Chocolate Liquor tasted. When you are a jet-set world-renowned mixologist, it only makes sense that Joel’s bar boasts something for everyone – from wine and craft beer to house wine on tap and creative cocktails. Mother’s drink menu is handcrafted, custom cocktails that incorporate the finest of ingredients in the most innovative way. Some exceptional curious combinations with fun names include Drunk Piggy and Toasted Monkey. In Drunk Piggy, a smoked glass highlights Four Roses

Bourbon, Apple Simple Syrup, Plum Bitters, Black Walnut Bitters and garnished with a slice of candied pepper bacon and a Luxardo cherry. The Toasted Monkey features Monkey Rum Toasted Coconut, Monkey Rum Spiced Rum. II Tramonto Amaretto paired with fresh orange and pineapple juice, Tres Agave Sour Mix and garnished with a Pineapple Leaf, sliced pineapple, cherry and served in recycled Monkey Rum Bottle Glass. Joel and his team is highly involved in their Westchase community having interns come from Alonso High School. “We’ve rotated like 30 kids since we started. It wasn’t a job-job. It was fun, especially for a first-time job. We had them doing everything. It was not your typical job.” Mother’s also hosts numerous Tuesday and Wednesday spirit night fundraisers where kids eat free and with ten percent goes back to the school, several large networking events,

even bridal and baby showers. They are proud of their philanthropic efforts for St. Francis Society Animal Rescue. In July they raised over $3,000 with a pet themed trivia and a portion of the proceeds from the September anniversary celebration will be donated to the rescue. When asked why he thinks his customers love the restaurant so much: was it the friendly-staff, the amazing food, the weekly specials, the innovative cocktails, the Yappy Hour for pet parents, the innovative changing menu, the weekly live entertainment, the special events, the community outreach or a combination of them all, Joel quipped, “Our motto is food, family, friends. I mean, who doesn’t love their Mothers?” Mother’s Restaurant is located at 12227 W Linebaugh Ave, Tampa, FL 33626. Reservations are encouraged. Caregivers Helping Hand Inc. Gives Baby Shower to Hillsborough County Moms-to-Be on Public Assistance By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Sometimes it takes but a single act of compassion to begin a domino effect that lasts a lifetime. In the 90s, Richedean HillsAckbar was a single mother and was given two baby showers by people wanting to help her in her time of need. She was so impacted by that kindness that she decided to assist other mothers on public assistance. In 2009, the inaugural “Annual Day of Pampering for Moms-To-Be” was birthed and now 10 years later, Richedean and volunteers from the community have touched the lives of 5000 expectant mommies through her nonprofit organization, Caregiver’s Helping Hand, Inc. From 10am to 2pm on Saturday, October 12, the

12 SEPTEMBER 2019

nonprofit is pampering expectant mothers during its “Annual Day of Pampering for Moms-To-Be.” Hosted at New Mt. Zion MB Church and sponsored by Rebein Brothers Trail Lawyers, BJ’S Restaurants, Inc., The Wellements Family, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Sunshine Health, this special event, open to all Hillsborough County momsto-be on public assistance, is celebrating a decade providing community baby showers. This year, Richdean expects over 250 women to attend the zoo-themed event. The event is also open to siblings with a Kids Zone bounce house and face-painting provided for them. Dads-to-be and Grandmas-to-be are also on the guest list. With horror stories in the news of infant abuse, Richedean provides this resource to help new inexperienced mothers

learn now how to prepare for the responsibility of a newborn. As several new mothers don’t have a support network to rely upon and it is easy to become overwhelmed, Richedean brings in community speakers to help train and prepare the young mothers for the stress of having an infant. Richedean also advocates to leave a violent situation and to not leave a child with someone that could potentially harm the child. She wants to give young mothers a sense of independence. Something that may come easy for others – like balancing a budget – may be difficult for a mother without experience. New mothers dealing with financial hardship don’t necessarily know how to budget for buying diapers, or formula, if not breastfeeding.

“They often don’t know how to handle this new responsibility and I actually form a budget so that they can balance it,” she said. “I have someone coming to show them how to make baby food, and someone to show them how to budget their

money.” With vendors including Hillsborough County Children’s Board, Healthy Start Coalition, Warriors for Autism, Tampa Family Health Centers, Sunshine Health Plans and Molina Health Care, expectant moms will also enjoy complimentary food, baby shower cake, gifts and training classes in financial management, couponing, care and child safety

for new parents and special classes for the dads sponsored by REACHUP. “The shower will include resources to different agencies that support parents and items new parents may need like book bags for the Dads filled with items needed for an outing like diapers, wipes, blankets, bottles and change of clothing,” said Richedean. “Mom Care, Reachup

Incorporated, and Children’s Board of Hillsborough County have been supporting this event for 10 years and are just a few of the companies supporting us.” Marilyn Westropp, Dr.Tracey Crocker, “The Job Coach” Margaret Debellotte, Dr.Romona Burrowes, and Pastor Laytecia McKinney will provide inspirational speaking for the expectant parents. Pictures and belly painting, as well as massages by Bless These Hands round out the event to ensure expectant moms will receive a very special day of spoiling. “We are trying to give momsto-be a good start to parenting their newborns by showing a little kindness in their time of need,” she said. “Someone once gave to me. I’m just giving back.” In addition to all the free services and gifts, Richedean herself creates diaper cakes filled with useful baby items which are raffled off for several of the lucky moms-to-be. When asked what the most

gratifying comment she’s heard from her guests over the last decade as the event and nonprofit founder, Richedean answered simply. “Thank you.” Caregiver’s Helping Hand, Inc. accepts gently used and new items for newborns, babies, and toddlers. Items needed include newborn diapers, baby bags, pacifiers, socks, blankets, hats, t-shirts, headbands, rattles, bottles, teething toys, strollers, mobiles, baby wipes, lotion, shampoo, powder, crib sheets, baby swings, baby monitors, and bottle warmers, etc. The “10th Annual Day of Pamper” is Saturday, October 8 at 10am-2pm at New Mt. Zion MB Church, 2511 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa. Guests can register on EventBrite at momstobe2019.eventbrite.com or text 813.431.1814. thoroughly. Dr. Pham took the time to educate me about Botox. How it works, what it is, that the experience is different for each patient. Botox isn’t a one size fits all. You and your doctor need to have a discussion about your individual questions. Your face is unique and so is your treatment. I knew nothing when I walked in other than the fact that needles were involved You should know that I’m a needle baby!! I shared this fact with her too. Needles give me anxiety, they always have. This might have been my biggest hurdle in considering this procedure, that my own needle phobia would be problematic. Am I alone in this? Any of you out there feel this way too? Well from one “baby” to another let me share my experience to ease your worries. When it was decided I would be having this procedure a numbing gel was applied to the area that would be treated. It takes a little time to do its work which gives you and the doctor time to discuss it in more length. I was informed about every part of what would happen, the under the surface parts of my face affected, the possibilities, the steps of the process and the length of time for the procedure to take effect. Dr. Pham really took the time to fully explain everything and answer each and every question I had. She took a conservative approach to my treatment which I also appreciated. It’s Go Time: The actual process took only about 15 minutes from start to finish. I have to tell you it was nothing like I thought it would be! The injections (given by very tiny needles, the same size used for insulin injections) felt like getting a small mosquito bite. I was hardly bothered at all. I had imagined it would be much, much more discomfort than I felt. It was nothing for this baby and that’s saying something! The result I experienced no pain

afterwards. I asked if it would be obvious I’d had a procedure when I left and true to what the doctor told me it was not. By the time I left and arrived at my next stop the tiny mosquito bites had disappeared. I looked the same as I had looked when I arrived. You could not tell!!! No one was the wiser! I assumed before learning about Botox that the results would be instantaneous. Not the case for your reference. It can take between 5-7 days to take effect. I watched myself in the mirror for days like a science experiment. It is important to share that while there is a chance of side effects, I personally had none. Nothing really happened good or bad for several days. Then something did. I woke up to find my lines had diminished. They were lessened, softened and had filled in. My most bothersome thing wasn’t a thing anymore! It was so liberating to be free of it. I felt a rush of self confidence, I felt like the me inside was reflected outside. Nothing appeared to be vexing me. I smiled the biggest smile. I got it, I got why women do this. I understood something I hadn’t before in that moment. The difference might not be massive to others but to me it was night and day! My smile was bigger the second time around. Myself consciousness was decreased and I loved my results.

motherhood and family does indeed fill my life. I believe and will always believe it’s the best thing that ever happened to me to be a wife and mother. I also believe honoring ourselves as individuals is a good thing too. We can get lost on our journey, we can lose our unique desires, those things just for us. We have to work to discover them and make time for them. Oh the rewards we receive when we do though! Thank you for joining me today!

Am I advising each of you to go out and get this straight away? Absolutely not! This is a very personal choice and you should absolutely do what’s right for you! Consult with a trusted doctor. Be transparent with your doctor and make sure you’re confident that you understand everything that’s involved. Maybe you’ll decide it isn’t your thing and that’s ok. I’m in no way saying that I feel women need this to be beautiful. Women are beautiful..period!!

Not even a little! I feel lightened on a deep level in a way I never thought I would. Who knew that doing this would have this outcome for me? Who knew how much internal emotional stuff was tied into a couple of lines?

What I learned from this I learned one of the why’s of Botox. I learned this isn’t a case of needing but wanting most of the time. We want to feel we like what we see. We want to feel like the best version of our best selves. We want to love that face we were born with. It’s not about refusal to accept the aging process, with age comes wisdom. It’s the ability to have a choice, an option. I also learned that women sometimes sheepishly own up to doing this. They don’t freely share they’ve had or continue to have it done. They worry about the reaction of others. They don’t want to be judged or to appear shallow. I’m bravely telling you I did this and that I’m not sorry!

Dr. B. Ngoc Pham, MD has been practicing Medical Aesthetics since 2004. Dr. Pham is an Allergan Master injector and her technique is second to none.
