Bringing joy and creativity to your home, Tonya Wilson deWaart The Crazy Crafty Chick

Don!t Get Your Tinsel in a “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” is the opening line of Charles Dickens’ 1859 A Tale of Two Cities. These words have always stricken me with emotions during the Christmas season. Why? This time of year brings happiness, eggnog joy, and many beautiful memories from our past. It can also be the “worst of times” for others who have lost a loved one- celebrating their first Christmas without their spouse, a child or parent. Why do I open with this statement? It is life - the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly. So, as we prep for “the most wonderful time of the year,” we need to make sure we open our eyes and truly see what is in front of us. Be sure to share love and spread joy to others that may struggle during Christmas time.

Just a Few Tips to Spread Christmas Cheer

1) Invite that fellow friend/neighbor or college student with no local family to your Christmas Eve meal or even that special Christmas lunch you have planned. As Americans we love to eat through any type of holiday. 2) As you take your daily strolls, grab a pack of those BIG chalk markers and write Christmas cheer sayings on a few driveways. Don’t worry, the chalk will not stain and the next rain will wash it away. This is the perfect way to let someone know you are thinking of them. 3) Are you that baker or cook during the holiday season? Share some goodies with that work colleague who has had a tough time or that neighbor you haven’t seen in a while. We are all on a journey in life and many are on hard journeys this year. Can your find 4) This is the perfect time of year for “Random Acts the Grinch? of Kindness”. Our community of Auburn/Opelika has so many various ways to give to those who are in need. Check to see where you can give time, goods, or maybe a little money. 5) Christmas can be stressful at many places - our local businesses, the grocery store, Walmart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot. The places we run to for gifts, decor, and some yummy festive food. Before going into any shop, try this: take a deep breath and be proactive! Decide to be that person that will smile to others and say “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Hanukkah,” or any of the many blessed greetings our various community cultures speak. This may be out of your comfort zone at first, but try it! We never know when a kind word will change someone’s day or life! Page 8

Tangle this Christmas Season Since we have decided not to get all tangled up this Christmas season, let’s talk about a few different ways to get your home ready for holiday cheer!

@TheCrazyCC

1) Dear, oh dear...the Christmas tree! Where shall it go? If your home has that perfect window to display your tree - do it there! There is nothing like our community taking winter rides through neighborhoods to see and awe at that Christmas tree in the window. If you are without that perfect front window, it is OK! Choose the family room where you can enjoy the lights of the tree each day. Here is a thought - some people even do two trees. One for the window and a central one for daily enjoyment. 2) When it comes to colors and tree decorations, do what you like! You can go crazy and truly get “your tinsel in a tangle” going large and big! Or keep it simple with one colored with various non-breakable balls. The most beautiful tree I have seen was decorated with various trinkets the family collected over the years from their travels. Here is the gist - do what you LOVE because you will be the one looking at the tree everyday. 3) For the rest of the home, survey your space and decide what areas need that Christmas love. Understand that all the walls, halls, and corners do not need to be decorated. Examine your areas and be sure to spread out that decor so your guests and family have “eye breaks.” An “eye break” is a space that has not been “merried” over. With eye breaks, our eyes and minds can truly concentrate and comment on those areas you have decked out. 4) After the survey, determine the number and size of projects. This is where Pinterest can be really dangerous. Be careful! 5) Now it is time to go into the garage and pull out those decorations from many years past. Note: This is also the perfect time to purge any items that no longer speak to your Christmas cheer. Purging is a necessary task and allows you to make more space for more items you LOVE and must have! Speaking of purging, consider donating to those whose budget just isn’t in place for Christmas decor. 6) Now that you have decided on the spaces you will decorate and the items you currently have/ will use, check your Christmas lights to make sure they all work! It’s also time for a little shopping at our local boutiques and DIY workshops to add more Christmas decor joy! You can get whimsical with some fun gnomes, “farmhousy” with the white and distressed look, or even go classic with red, green and gold. Have fun with all the possibilities our community has! Within your home decor can be a conversation starter. Be unique and decorate that home with your heart. During this season, seize each moment to dare, to care, to share your light and elevate others around you!

Russell Lands owns, manages, and develops commercial and residential real estate, primarily along Lake Martin’s 41,000 acres of pristine water and 880 miles of shoreline. The multi-faceted company is committed to serving the surrounding community and proud steward of the land. Founded on the remarkable achievements of its namesake Benjamin ‘Mr. Ben’ Russell (1876 – 1941) whose love of the land and visionary investments put Alexander City, AL, on the map over 100 years ago.

Waterfront Homesites, Lake Club and Coore & Crenshaw Golf Course Among the Features of the Newest Russell Lands Luxury Community, The Heritage LAKE MARTIN, AL (November 17, 2021) – Today, Russell Lands, Lake Martin’s most distinctive collection of lake neighborhoods, released additional details about the newest luxury residential community on Lake Martin, The Heritage. Scheduled for availability in 2022, The Heritage boasts more than 1,500 acres along 12 miles of pristine Lake Martin shoreline and will include 200 waterfront homesites and 150 wooded interior lots. The Heritage was designed to provide a comprehensive lake experience, ensuring waterfront properties maximize the unparalleled water views, while many off-water properties provide views of the Wicker Point Golf Club course, the centerpiece of The Heritage community. Homesites will provide ample lot size and privacy, with the first phase of development along Wicker Point peninsula. One of the signature amenities in The Heritage community is a waterfront residential lake club, providing the perfect opportunity for all Heritage property owners to gather with family, friends, and neighbors to enjoy an array of resort-style amenities. The clubhouse building will include a large indoor event space with a catering kitchen and event bar, a fully equipped fitness facility and expansive views of the lake from covered verandas. The lake club grounds will offer extensive outdoor amenities including a saline pool with an adjacent grill facility, eight tennis courts, a tennis pro-shop and eight pickleball courts. Guests will enjoy a beautiful event lawn, covered pavilions, firepits, waterfront beach area, and community dock system. The lake club is designed by renowned Atlanta-based architectural firm Cooper Carry. Construction of the lake club will follow the completion of the Wicker Point Golf Club clubhouse. Construction is already underway on the highly anticipated Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw- designed Wicker Point Golf Club course, the only Coore & Crenshaw designed course in Alabama. The private club is expected to open in summer 2023 and is inspired by the unique topography at the heart of The Heritage. Defined by its pine plantations, meandering creeks and lakefront holes, the 18-hole course will emphasize the land’s natural beauty and serenity. A limited number of golf-front homesites will feature course views tastefully set back allowing the course to remain the central focus for golfers. The name, The Heritage, is intended to honor Russell Lands’ namesake Mr. Ben Russell, whose grandson and Chairman of the Board, Ben Russell, dedicated this pristine lakefront acreage to honor his family’s legacy. The Heritage lakefront real estate will be available in 2022.
