Fall Is Proof That Change Can Be Beautiful

Transitioning from summer to fall in our community can be a chance of cooler weather with leaves turning various colors or an extended hot, humid summer with pumpkins. These last few weeks, we are embracing cooler mornings and evenings. With this change of weather, as a southern community, we are also hearing high school and college football games, roars of people, school bands playing, and an extra 85,000 visitors to our hometown on those “game day weekends”. Many things change for us during the FABULOUS season of Fall.

With all of the adjustment and fear we experienced in 2020, we also learned a lot about the place we lived, our homes became a new stronger element in our lives. It became a safe zone where we learned new ways (actually old ones) to entertain our family with board games, dance parties and forts in our great room.

Here we are in 2021, and it's officially time to welcome fall and all its glory. While nature’s magic is happening outside, it is up to you to create that cozy home of your dreams inside. If you have a small budget or can afford Pottery Barn, you can always be inventive in how you decorate your halls, walls, mantels, tables and so much more. To start, think about our typical fall colors, red, orange, brown, yellowish gold and pesto green. This year look around and you will see new color pallets. Light greens with black buffalo plaids and various blues scattered in with our “typical” fall colors. Don’t be afraid to add those dashes of red and pumpkin orange to your “farmhouse” style home. Whatever your taste or style - bring a little color, creativity and connection to your family, making life a work of art and your home a happy masterpiece. Here are a few simple ideas to get your creative juices flowing! 1) Starting on the outside and going in, you can add a cute harvest wreath or an acorn door hanger to the door and always throw in a barrel of hay with loads of ‘real or fake’ pumpkins and gourds! 2) Depending on your entryway, you can add a pop of autumn color with fake leaves wrapped around your stair rails or you can focus on that entryway table with the same leaves wrapped in a circle with a pre lit candle in the middle. 3) Leading to your mantel or the main focus of your great room, make a swag or banner announcing the season. Have fun with this and let the kids tie various colored ribbon between words and phrases. Never forget to add the y’all to the phrase “It’s Fall Y'all”! 4) Now, let’s get into the “it was on the side of the road, Mom”. Yep, it is time to make several wooden pumpkins of various shapes and sizes. Look for types of wood (ex. 2x4) in different lengths. Paint them orange or even different colors of cream, green and orange. Add a stick from your tree in the backyard to the top of the wood for a stem and tie a knot with some Dollar Store ribbon. If you wanna go that extra mile, send the kids to look for pinecones, acorns and pecans to gather around the wooden pumpkins for that PERFECT fall display! 5) The place where the family gathers - the table! Change out your tiered tray decor with those items found outside by the kids and that local dollar store. Mixed metals of silver and gold, with rustic placemats and high-end dinner plates are going to make your table inviting for your family and guests this holiday season. Whatever your taste or style - bring a little color, creativity and connection to your family, making life a work of art and your home a happy masterpiece.
