HELPING CHILDREN TO SEE THEIR FUTURE
Local optician supports national ‘back to school’ children’s eye health campaign Optometrists around the country are joining in a national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of eye health.
Led by the Association of Optometrists (AOP), the campaign aims to encourage parents not to overlook their children’s eye health this summer and to include a sight test in their ‘back to school’ routine. Up to 1 million children in the UK1 will return to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem. Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children’s ability to learn and on their behaviour - yet often goes unrecognised by teachers, parents and by the children themselves. Local optometrist, Donal McGovern from D. McGovern Opticians and contact lens Centre of Main St Lifford and Castle St Strabane said: “The importance of good eye health cannot be underestimated. I would urge parents to remember that taking their children to have their eyes checked is just as important as the trip to the dentist, or having their feet measured. This should ideally happen around the age of four, or even before, as problems detected this young can be corrected more easily. Sight testing at an early age could also prevent wasted opportunities as the child enters school – as a child with undiagnosed sight issues may not be able to learn properly.”
A sight test carried out before the kids go back to school can be very beneficial.
Parents are encouraged to include a sight test in their back to school routine. An eye test is free in Northern Ireland on the NHS for all children. Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read to have their eyes checked as optometrists are able to carry out an eye test using pictures. For the months August and September D. McGovern Opticians are offering FREE upgrade to PNX a stronger lighter plastic lens.

Allstate Strabane takes Melmount Manor to the Movies
A dream come true for local dancer Emma!
As we pass the halfway point of the year Allstate Strabane Charities Committee shows no signs of slowing down.
Emma Coulter student of the Cullen School of Irish dancing who has brought the Carter Cup to Tyrone for the first time ever! The Feis has been running from 1970 and it is the first time anyone from Tyrone has won the Carter Cup. The Carter Cup is awarded to the top dancer throughout the Feis. Emma has been competing in this Feis since she was a little girl and it has always been her dream to win the Carter cup. Dreams do come true!
To date this year the group has donated to such causes such as Meningitis Research, Chest Heart and Stroke, Tiny Life and many others. Melmount Manor, situated a short walk from the office of Allstate Strabane on the Orchard Road Industrial Estate, is a much loved care home in the local community known for taking care of our older citizens, in addition to providing specialist care for those who sadly aren’t able to take care of themselves. For their latest contribution to help the local community, the Charities Committee raised £660 to provide and install a projector for watching TV and films as well as helping to train new staff on a regular basis. The money was raised through a variety of events held internally at Allstate Strabane over the last few months, including Summer Raffles, Bake Sales and regular Dress Down events, all generously supported by its employees. After the projector was installed the Charities Committee visited Melmount Manor and was thrilled at the reception the projector and screen have received Pictured at the donation of a Projector and Screen to Melmount Manor residents from Allstate from its residents and staff. John Grealish is a sound man in this regard. He knows his stuff and is also passionate about giving artists the chance to create a quality recording. And now from his base in Convoy, he is catering for musicians from around the Strabane area and indeed all over east Donegal in his state of the art studio. The name itself, Elevation Music Studios, tells you to look up and listen to what’s going on. It’s really the same philosophy inside the studio walls. Established in 2007, John’s recording and rehearsal facilities work to suit beginners and long established artists alike. The studio is professionally sound treated and air conditioned for bands, solo artists and all other musicians. But how did a native of north-west London who began his musical career listening to his Mum’s collection of 1950s records come to put down his musical roots in the village of Convoy?

John tweaking things in his studio.
He was too young to get into the Roxy to see the Sex Pistols, ran around with the Mods before taking up guitar and played in several indie rock bands at various venues throughout London in the 1980s and 1990s. “My Mum was from Limerick and Dad is from Connemara so we always had a touch of Irish in us growing up. My main reason for coming over however was for our children and a better quality of life, it was as simple as that really,” he says. Growing up in London NW John enjoyed the influences of living in a multicultural community where he could hear everything from Jim Reeves to The Beatles to reggae on a regular basis. “I was the first one in my immediate family to pick up an instrument. My love of music came from my mother, either listening to country music like Jim Reeves; Sixties pop including The Beatles and even strange things like Benny Hill. It all went into the mix and when I made the transition from listening to mum’s stuff to finding my own direction in music, along came the Mod revival. “I hung around with my mates who were punks and while they were dragging their heels down Kilburn High Road, I was driving around on my cherry red Vespa, but we went to each other’s gigs. I was too young to get into the Roxy at 14 to see the Pistols and The Damned and anyway, like a lot of guys around my age, we were scared of punks; we didn’t know what they were about!” All these influences came together when forming his own bands, experimenting with psychedelic and progressive rock, before finding his niche with alternative indie rock and bands like ‘Crystalline’, ‘Alice in Neasden’ and ‘Seizure’. The latter attracted record company interest and a few demos were made but despite many gigs in rock hot spots in places like Camden Town and Islington indeed anywhere the demand was, the band called it a day in 2000 to concentrate on other projects. John was also singer songwriter and co- produced the bands own material over those years.
John setting the drums up for a recording session.
“By that stage we weren’t into chasing fame so much. We enjoyed writing and playing our own stuff. We made a conscious decision not to do any covers but now and again we’d throw in the odd surprise and to the bewilderment of an audience they might hear a version of a TV ad or two!” It was at this stage John decided to move to Ireland. He came across his current premises quite by accident. “I was looking for a place for a studio. I knew from experience in London that studios are off the beaten track. Indeed that’s more or less a necessity. You don’t want to disturb anyone or anyone disturbing you; noise pollution or rather the lack of it is pretty important when it comes to recording. “My wife Tina and I stopped for a coffee at the café Edel McBride used to run when her knitwear business was based here at the old Woollen Mill in Convoy. The building was being redeveloped into enterprise units. It looked a nice place to work, the surroundings looked pleasant and the people nice so I thought, this place would be ideal for me.” John patiently built up Elevation Music Studios with not only top of the range recording equipment but rehearsal studios too. This gives the user time to get ready with drums including cymbals, bass, guitar amps and plenty of mics in place as well as PA and keyboards not to mention John’s experience to point them in the right direction. He also teaches beginners guitar on a one to one basis. New bands can avail of a free three-hour rehearsal session too. If you don’t have a band but would like the chance to get something down on CD for the record, there’s a place for you at John’s place too. “We can also obtain most backing tracks for people who may want to record themselves to put onto a CD for them or as a gift to a loved one. This is increasingly popular and a fun way to surprise friends or mark an occasion. Indeed many charities are looking to this way for fund raising for good causes. “A lot of it is word of mouth. You can come in as a novice or an experienced performer, talented or beginner and do what you like as loud as you like and through rehearsal will get there. People soon get over nerves. Sometimes they sing it in verses, even sentences or all at one go. It’s up to you and all talents and levels of confidence are catered for. The studio is adapted to their needs and I will teach them how to feel comfortable and the finished product will always be what they’re comfortable with.” “It’s broken down in a way that makes the singer or band get into their stride and helps the comfort level,” he said. As well as getting all the sounds right during recording sessions John also has kitchen facilities at the studio where participants can avail of free refreshments in break times… it has been rumoured that the odd cup of tea can loosen the old vocal chords! And here’s sweet music to your ears: John is providing a promo offer for readers of the Strabane Herald. The first three people to ring will get to record a song for free, for which we will supply the backing track. All others who ring will receive a 10% discount if they mention they have seen the article in the Herald. Elevation |Music Studios are online at www.facebook.com/Elevationmusicstudio. The Guitar Man’s Artist American guitarist Steve Vai has been enthralling concertgoers and aspiring guitarists since the 1980s, selling 15 million albums to date and playing all over the world. As his current world tour prepares to descend upon Ireland this month, the appearance on stage of one of his guitars will have a local significance as it was built by Alistair Hay, himself a long-standing Steve Vai fan, out at his Emerald Guitars workshop in Cavanacaw, St Johnston. The otherworldly looking instrument is based on Aaron Brown’s illustration for Vai’s 1999 album, ‘The Ultra Zone’, which depicts an “alien Steve” playing a futuristic-looking axe. Alistair was so taken with the image that he set about building Vai a guitar that matched the illustration. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week from his workshop, Alistair was overjoyed at how things unfolded with the guitar. “Steve Vai is truly one of the most creative, accomplished, influential guitarists of his generation, and to see him perform on stage in front of thousands of fans playing the guitar I made for him. It’s a real milestone for Emerald Guitars. And for me, personally, it’s a dream come true,” he enthused. Alistair went to see Vai perform in Dublin as part of the ‘Ultra Zone’ tour and the back drop on stage was the album cover. While Vai came out on stage dressed as the “alien” on the cover he was still just using a regular white Ibanez Jem guitar. This gave Alistair an idea. “I looked and the back-drop and the guitar he was using and thought to myself, this doesn’t fit, I have to build the real one. So I started building it the very next day,” he recalled. After the guitar was almost completed Alistair attended the NAMM Show, which is the world’s

largest trade-only event for the music products industry, held every January in Anaheim, California. Every year Vai attends and meets fans at the Ibanez booth but large numbers make meeting difficult. By chance, Alistair happened to be walking along a corridor and spotted Vai chatting to a small group of fans. This was his chance to tell him about the ‘Ultra Zone’ guitar. “I told him who I was and that I saw him in Dublin. I asked him if he ever thought the guitar on the cover of ‘The Ultra Zone’ could ever be built. He looked

at me and thought I was crazy! I told him it was half built and if he’s ever interested in seeing it I’d get it to him. He gave me an email address and said to send a message when it was complete,” Alistair explained. On returning home to St Johnston, another three months were spent finishing the guitar. Despite numerous emails with a picture attached of the guitar, Alistair got no reply. Eventually he discovered that the recipients on Vai’s side didn’t think it was real; that was, in fact, a computer generated image. “I suppose that was compliment in a way,” joked Alistair. “But eventually we did get in touch with them and then I got an email one Wednesday morning saying that Steve would love to see the guitar. I don’t think they realised that I was in Ireland, so the next day I was on a flight to LA and I met Steve on the Saturday morning and gave him the guitar.” And what was the guitar hero’s first impression? “He said, “Holy S***!”” laughed Alistair. “I’ll never forget it, those were his first words. He was blown away with it. He couldn’t believe that I actually made it. Steve Vai was the reason I first got into guitars. I heard his ‘Passion and Warfare’ album and within two weeks bought my first guitar. It was the music that changed my life and now he was playing about with a guitar I made!” A friendship was forged between Vai and Alistair from this meeting and the Donegal man ended up making a number of other guitars for the virtuoso. Yet in all this time, the ‘Ultra Zone’ guitar was never used on stage. Then, a couple of years ago at a gig in Holland, the pair met up again and Vai said that he planned to take the guitar out on tour. “I thought he meant a seven string acoustic I built for him. I couldn’t believe it when he said it was the ‘Ultra Zone’ guitar,” said Alistair.
The guitar was brought back to Donegal for a few modifications, including a laser installation for dramatic effectiveness on stage. Vai also agreed for a replica series of it to be made. The tour began in August 2012 doing nearly 100 shows in the final half of the year through America and Europe. The tour then went to Asia and is now back in Europe, with a show in Belfast’s Mandela Hall on August 29. “It’s been a major buzz to witness Steve playing the guitar on-stage, just as I did last year when he played Dublin. It was in Vicar Street, which was the same venue I saw him in when I first had the idea to build the guitar, so there was a great full circle feeling about seeing it on stage in that very venue,” explained Alistair. At Emerald Guitars, Alistair has built countless instruments and continues to do so. His claim to fame, however, is not limited to Steve Vai. In fact, he designed a ‘Bahamut Dragon’ guitar, which has become iconic throughout Asia, having being built for guitarist Leehom Wang, who is the biggest selling artist in the continent. “The ‘Ultra Zone’ guitar is probably the most famous in the guitar world but the ‘Bahamut Dragon’ is the most famous guitar on the planet, even though most people wouldn’t know of it on this side of the world,” explained Alistair. “I thought Leehom would just be using the guitar for a few songs but it has since become almost like his side-kick. Wherever he goes, it goes and he’s just a phenomenon in Asia playing to crowds of 80,000. In fact he can easily fill the O2 when he comes to London as well.” Superstars need a super guitar and it’s clear that they’re coming to Donegal to get it and knocking on Alistair’s door. For more information on Emerald Guitars, check out their website: www.emeraldguitars.com.

‘The hippy trail’ recalled at Fountain Street Book Launch Belfast-based author Ciarán de Baróid was a special guest at Fountain Street Community Centre on July 4 for the launch of his latest book, ‘A Little Madness: Travels on the hippie trail’. The book is an examination of travel as it was in the counter culture days of the 1970s - raw, scruffy, humorous and on the edge. In January 1970, at the age of eighteen, Ciarán set off from Cork with a friend, planning to hitchhike to India, via North Africa with just £160 in his pocket. The journey that followed was one of adventure, danger, cultural exploration and living on one’s wits. Speaking at the launch, Ciarán outlined what inspired him to first take ‘the hippy trail’ all those years ago. “When I was 17 my family wanted me to go to university but I had other ideas that I wanted to explore. Then one night I was sitting in front of the television and saw this documentary on slum life in Calcutta and I decided there and then that I was going to India. I went upstairs and looked at an Atlas to see if any major seas stood between Cork and Calcutta. When I saw that there wasn’t I met up with a friend, Tony O’Connor, who I figured may also be interested in such an adventure. “Are you serious?” was Tony’s reply. I told him that I was and that we could go via North Africa,” Ciarán recalled. In the early 1970s there was a movement among young people that started to travel to India. ‘The Hippy trail’ was essentially the road from London to Kathmandu overland. “It took anything up to three weeks to three
months to get across; all depending on quickly you travelled. There were no guidebooks and there was no internet, so you didn’t really know what lay ahead of you. All your information came from people coming the other direction,” explained Ciarán. ‘The hippy trail’ only lasted for nine years as the overland trail suffered from political changes at the end of the 1970s. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and the Shah was deposed by an Islamic revolution in Iran. It was a very short period but it was the beginning of the back-packing culture we have today. Ciarán was quick to separate those who took ‘the hippy trail’ from normal everyday tourists. The sense of adventure and unpredictability, not to mention the ever decreasing funds and possibility of ill-health is a far cry from the tourist experience in Ciarán’s opinion. It also makes for a far superior read given the nature of the travel involved. ‘A Little Madness: Travels on the hippie trail’ is Ciarán de Baróid’s third book, following ‘Down North’ and ‘Ballymurphy and the Irish War’ and will be available soon at Easons Bookstore.

Creepy Creatures at Knockavoe School! The ‘ZooLab’ visited Knockavoe School just before the pupils got off for summer holidays. The pupils all got to get their hands on some weird and wonderfully exotic creatures from around the world. They all got to meet and hold some Cockroaches, Frogs, Ants, a black scorpion, a friendly Corn Snake and a temperamental Tarantula. The day was very scary for the pupils and staff but some of the pupils’ showed unbelievable courage in handling the minibeasts. This little man gets a wee bit nervous as the slimy snake is displayed close to him! The visit was funded by the Friends of Knockavoe behalf of our pupils, would like to thank them for their continued charity and all the staff, on support throughout the year. TotalMusic What Ever Happened To The ‘Slow-Set’? There is something that was once the staple of a young man and woman’s weekend that is now obsolete. It brought passion, it raised the room temperature and it made Air Supply rather wealthy. I am, of course, referring to the ‘slow-set’ – that moment at the disco when the DJ changed the tempo for ten minutes, clearing the dancefloor of ill-advised moonwalks, robotics and break-dance manoeuvres, replacing it with couples in a warm embrace, slowly shimmying from side-to-side, staring deep into each other’s eyes and miming the wrong words to ‘All Out Of Love’. As Morten Harket’s screeching falsetto on A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’ began to fade, the muffled announcement would come from the DJ-box in that mid-Atlantic twang the DJ would speak in, despite coming from Ballindrait, that “we’re gonna slow things down ladies and gents with this current chart topper from T’Pau!” This was the signal all the single blokes in the room required as they then scoured the room, pint of lager in hand, for a suitable dancing partner. Often, two people who were complete strangers to each other would take to the floor together and be in a romantic clinch before the obligatory key change, coming up for air
to take a puff on a ciggie (yes it was that long ago now!) and returning to business with each other’s shoulder becoming a makeshift ashtray. Yes, the ‘slow-set’ was indeed the theatre of passion, the ballroom of
romance, the L’amour on the floor and without it you may not have even existed! Depending on your age, chances are your parents met and shared many a slow-dance at the old ballrooms, or later in
the 70s and 80s, the discos and nightclubs that succeeded those old dance halls. Make no bones about it, you owe a great deal to Frank Sinatra, Englebert Humperdinck, Bonnie Tyler and movies like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’. The ‘slow-set’ was the direct way of letting someone know you liked them. If they agreed to dance with you, happy days, if they didn’t, well at least you knew where you stood and you went home and listened to ‘How Soon Is Now?’ on repeat. Songs were written with the slow-set in mind. As lovely as his voice and his songs are, James Taylor never cut it during a slow-set. It was a hot moment and a bit more of an electrical surge was required – so enter the Power Ballad. The Power Ballad didn’t do small. The hair, shoulder pads, vocals and drums filled the room and ran in synch with couples on the floor, creating their own little mutual cinematic rom-dramas to the sounds of ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’, ‘China In Your Hand’, ‘I Wanna Know What Love Is’, ‘Take My Breath Away’, ‘Is This Love?’, ‘Alone’, the list goes on and on. There are many who come from musical backgrounds completely alien to that of the
Glasgowbury Festival bids farewell to Eagle’s Rock After thirteen years and countless performances from the best in homegrown musical talent, the Glasgowbury festival bid farewell to its annual home at Eagle’s Rock on July 20 in truly unforgettable fashion. Amongst many other acts on the bill, headliners And So I Watch You From Afar, The Japanese Popstars and The Answer delivered storming performances, the latter act wrapping up the annual showcase’s final year on the main stage late on the Saturday night. Arguably the festival’s most exhilarating showcase to date – expanding to a two-day event for the first time in its history – the event marked Glasgowbury’s ‘Small but Massive’ transition into new territories after over a decade providing an unparalleled platform for up-and-coming and established artists throughout the country. Earlier this month it was announced that Paddy Glasgow and co. are set to relocate to an expanded creative hub in Draperstown’s Cornstore, where the continued promotion of homegrown talent and expansion of new educational and creative enterprises will thrive. With Paddy asking festival-goers “to look out

for a Small but Massive stage near you” on the main stage following the Answer’s set on the Saturday night, the future of Glasgowbury is very much in the process of redeveloping, rather than ending. New challenges lie ahead as well as a wider and more varied programme of arts and community development that will continue to provide year-long tuition programmes and performance opportunities. Glasgowbury will strive to foster local talent while developing new audiences for the arts.
The organisers have expressed their deepest gratitude and thanks to the innumerable cast of volunteers, crew and artists involved in positively ensuring that the festival’s final send off will live long in the memory. The next stage in Glasgowbury’s forward-thinking regeneration has only just begun and everyone at the ‘Herald’ wishes Paddy, Stella and everyone involved in the past thirteen years all the very best for what is certain to be a bright future that will benefit many in the local arts.
So what happened? Why did it all end? What hope now of the boy or girl who likes what he or she sees staring from across the room? It’s too loud to chitchat so nothing goes any further and they all go home alone. China in your hand (T;Pau)
power-balladeers but they can still hold great affection for those songs and their purpose. Even the most fervent Pixies fan will take time out, warmly smile and reflect when ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’ comes on the radio.
Surely you’ve noticed the lack of people walking through your town at night hand-in-hand. All the lads and ladies come out in packs and go home in packs, their spirits lacking the elevation that Marvin Gaye could bring to the night if his sweet tones were allowed to breathe on the dancefloor. It’s time to let Marvin breathe again, let Coverdale find the love he’s been searching for and let Bryan Adams take you both to heaven once again.

Future generations may just depend on it!
Summer Encore The Fir Trees in Strabane will be the venue for a festival of greatness on Saturday, August 24, when a host of local acts will take to the stage for an end of summer party. On the bill will be the R.E.M. endorsed White Male Actors, Freak’s, Hip-Hop roof-raisers Mr Mills, HC Baby and DK and, fresh from their set at the final Glasgowbury festival, Those Ghosts. Tickets are not expected to last too long for this one so it is advised to get your paws on one right now as any last-minute dotcomers are certain to be disappointed come the 24th. It’ll be a night of sweat and shapes as we bid farewell to a summer we certainly cannot complain about, both weather-wise and music-wise. Give it to me one more time!!

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats
Welcome to a new section of the Strabane Herald, where we speak to a son or daughter of Strabane, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond Strabane we wonder what memories and hopes they have for their hometown and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, we speak to Anthony Duffy from Ballycolman, now living in Boston. When did you leave Strabane for Boston? I left Strabane in 2004. What’s life like for a Strabane man where you are now?
One of the best things about Strabane.
Moving back home is never out of the question for my wife Joanna and I, especially now that we have our own family of twins. We often talk about moving back but have never made it concrete yet, but someday I can see us moving back to Strabane.
I grew up in the Ballycolman area but spent most of my childhood in the ‘Head of the town’ area, mostly in Drumrallagh. A great memory for you of Strabane.
Page 8 April 2013 The Herald
Something Strabane has that your new home doesn’t have.
Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again someday?
Where in Strabane did you grow up?
The entire community came together and had parades, fireworks etc.
and my friends to do, so that’s one thing I’d like to see.
Boston will never have the community spirit that Strabane has.
Boston is a great place to live and has treated me very well, but I am often homesick and wish I was home now and again.
I have tons of memories of Strabane, but the ones that stood out most were the ‘Hiring Fair’ Festival days.
in, the neighbours and the different estates – so far but so close, But I miss my family most of all.
Anthony Duffy from Ballycolman now living in Boston.
Something you miss about Strabane. I miss my friends and the community I grew up
The best thing Strabane has is within the community. The community has something special and not every community is like ours. Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane?
Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future.
I’ll unpack my bags and take a quick shower and head into Dicey’s for a few pints with my friends, then I’ll head into Joe’s Bar and have a few ( maybe put a horse on next door ) then go down to the Farmer’s home for a few then stagger up to Jaspers for a single fish with battered sausages. Then, if I’m lucky, a taxi will stop to take me back to the Ballycolman haha.
I’d like to see Strabane do something to help the youth in the town. I remember when I grew up in the town there wasn’t a lot of activities for me
Next month we will feature another long lost Strabane native. If you want someone to feature pleases call us on 028 71 419514 or e: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk

Looking at Debt Differently Recently I have been inundated with people in trouble with debt. Financial difficulties can have a profound negative effect on our self esteem and general health. As a matter of fact, many people have been so confused and helpless about financial situations that they have sadly paid the ultimate price and taken their own lives. It is all very sad. I know that there was irresponsible borrowing from banks and financial institutions in the past however there was also irresponsible lending on behalf of the banks. I believe banks too must share the burden of loss. The mechanism for the creation of money is baffling. So strange I decided to investigate how money works. There are many resources available on ‘you tube’ and the internet that explains how money is created much better than I could. Have a look by simply putting the words ‘How money works’ into Google and be amazed at what you will see. The fact is money actually is created from ‘thin air’ as it were. Up to 97% of all money never leaves the bank. Ask yourself when you took out a mortgage did you actually see and feel the money the bank or building society gave you? Or did your bank simply transfer the money to another bank without you seeing or feeling it? Perhaps you received a cheque, which again is not money but simply a piece of paper which we believe has the value of the sum of money written on it. If you have a sizeable deposit in the bank you will more than likely have to order large sums of cash well in advance simply because the bank does not have the cash. The banks most probably will come up with the cash however you will have to wait for your own money. You can get cash from an ATM however most banks limit this to just £200 - £400 per day. Cash is not their business, debt and credit is. Cash is very cumbersome and expensive to move around
us right’ as it were. Governments however are only in office for short periods of time and as long as the economy is on the ‘up’ on their watch, they congratulate each other on doing a great job. Another thing to remember is that when you deposit money into a bank it ceases to be yours. You have access to it however legally it is not your money. In the word of Douglas Carswell MP for Clacton, ‘Legally, you do not own the money that you pay into your bank. You merely have a legal claim to it. Despite you – and every other customer – thinking that what you pay in is a deposit, the bank treats it like a loan. Which is how the bank is able to lend “your money” several times over, creating credit from nothing. Which is, in turn, why when everyone stands outside the bank and asks for their money back – a la Cyprus – it isn’t there’. Douglas Carswell MP for Clacton. I believe governments throughout the world are afraid to challenge banks as those who control the money supply seem to be a law on their own. Regularly we hear about financial scandals in banks and fraud on a massive scale. The result is banks may get their knuckles rapped but continue doing the same thing. I also believe government debt from so called ‘bondholders’ was also created from thin air, just like quantitative easing, so how can we owe so much money and pay dearly for something that did not exist in the first place as it was created out of thin air? Perhaps its’ time to think for ourselves as banks will use bully boy tactics and often illegal means to intimidate those who find it difficult to repay money that the bank created from thin air in the first place. Refuse to let them do this, become aware of your rights and challenge them all the way. Check the websites www.saveyourhome.co.uk and www. getoutofdebtfree.org and see debt, credit, loans and banks from a different perspective.
whereas computers can transfer monies anywhere in an instant. It often baffles me too when I pay for something with a debit card it is often taken out of my account immediately whereas I have to wait sometimes days for a deposit to register. Believe it or not, when we borrow from banks the money, as I always thought, does not necessarily come from depositors’ money. Instead the document you sign when completing a financial transaction such as a mortgage application form is used by the bank as a financial instrument to create money from nothing. Check it out! Therefore the bank has little or no financial liability as the money they ‘gave ‘you didn’t actually exist in the first place. This fractional reserve banking system of creating money from nothing has consequences for us all as it has the effect of increasing the money supply, increasing inflation and rendering each pound in everyone’s pocket to be worth less and less overtime. It guarantees boom and bust economies. However we seem to ignore what Worth thinking about! is happening and leave it to governments to ‘keep Tom Herron

Where opportunities are endless and students excel! In the academic year 2012/13 South West College students achieved a total of 40 regional, national and international awards, an unprecedented achievement that showcases the breadth of talent emanating from students at the College. In recent years South West College has become a force to be reckoned with in major national and international competitions such as Skillbuild NI, Skillbuild UK, World Skills, Nestle’ Torque d‘Or, and CATEX competitions. For further information regarding the wide range of full-time, part-time, training, apprenticeship and higher education courses Tel: 0845 603 1881, log on to www.swc.ac.uk, or email enquires@swc.ac.uk. The student’s views:
Daniel Sawyers gives the low down on studying Business. Tell us a little about you? My name is Daniel Sawyers. I am in my second year of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business here at the Omagh Campus of South West College. Outside of the college I have a keen interest in agriculture and farming which is why I chose to enrol on this course. I wanted to widen my knowledge of business to help me develop and start my own business in the future. Tell us about your course? The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma In Business has 18 units with 9 covered in year one and 9 in year two. I have really enjoyed the course so far with learning and gaining new skills which will be useful for me in a real life business environment. The bookkeeping units within the course I particularly enjoy as I have always liked working with figures and calculations. The work is hard at times and does require a fair level of hard work and determination. I enjoy most aspects of the course and especially the assignments which can be related to an area which interests me. Most assignments within the course are related to case studies which are interesting and sometimes we get the opportunity to visit these businesses, like our trip to the Coca Cola factory in first year. I believe this course will be a great help to me in the future and the range of skills I have gained will be put to good use.
What do you hope to do in the future? In the future I hope to start my own business within the agricultural industry. I have currently started work in setting up my business and I own a flock of sheep and breeding cows. From my on-farm experience I have witnessed some problems which appear to be common on all farms that ultimately affect production, efficiency and profit. I am interested in exploring ways of minimising these problems and hope to develop new strategies in the future that will lead to increased production, more efficiencies and ultimately higher profits. For further information about this course contact Carmel Barrett Tel: 0845 603 1881 or email: carmel.barrett@swc. ac.uk
Sarah Smith talks Art & Design Tell us a little about you? I am 23 year old and originally from North Devon. I previously attended North Devon College (Petroc) from 2006-9, where I studied Classical Civilization (A2) and History and Art (AS). I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to do so, visiting the likes of France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Venice, Egypt and the US of A. I am an avid reader, runner, and musician and enjoy being outdoors. Art However is at the centre of all I do and what I enjoy best. Tell us about your course? I am studying the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design at South West College Omagh Campus and so far the course has been fantastic. The facilities at the College are second to none; having access to up to the minute technology, such as i-pads, tablets and 3D printers and with the Strule Art Centre literally on our door step we have been lucky enough to enjoy limited access to a professional Print Workshop. The course itself gives us the chance to explore a variety of Art forms; painting, ceramics, graphics, 3D sculpture and print to name a few. Our tutors are attentive, professional and expert in their various Areas of Art and Design and encourage and support us endlessly as we aspire toward our future careers. What do you hope to do in the future? I have an idea of the area of the industry I would like to work in; however I found I enjoy a range of the areas covered so far on this course. I would class myself as more of a tactile artist who enjoys getting stuck into a project and before I came to Omagh Tech I would
never have believed I would enjoy the likes of graphics, however being a part of this course I have discovered a new avenue and the possibilities seem endless as doors continue to open. Being someone who enjoys the theatre, I fancy the idea of working in production, however I also enjoy designing so at this stage I am content to let my education in Art develop and simply go with my instinct. Shane McMahon reviews the benefits of studying Construction
Alicia talks engineering, definitely not just for the boys!
Tell us a little about you? I left school in 2003 with 7 GCSEs and enrolled at the Training Centre in Enniskillen for a plastering apprenticeship. The recession in the construction industry got me thinking of a new direction for my career. I have always had a fascination with bridges and buildings. In recent years, I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively in Europe and visit/photograph famous bridges and buildings. This prompted me to attend an open day at the College in Omagh in 2011 and the rest is “history”.
Tell us a little about you? I knew from an early age that I wanted to pursue a career in engineering and have a strong background in Mathematics and Technology.
Tell us about your course? I am currently studying the Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering and Transport, accredited by the University of Ulster at the Omagh Campus of South West College. The course is an excellent combination of theory and practice. Site visits to “live” projects enables me to see the design in the office transformed into the structure on the site. The lecturers on my course take a personal interest in me, and their enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. My fellow students and I have developed a strong bound, which we
I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome into the industry and thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the course. I am currently works for Greiner Packaging and I really have excelled in all areas of my life since starting the course, socially, academically and practically. will carry through to university and beyond.
What do you hope to do in the future? Whilst my foundation degree course has the specialism in transport, I would like to concentrate on structural engineering, when I complete my honours degree at university. I am currently on work placement with a large consultancy firm, and most of the design work undertaken is for structural steelwork and reinforced concrete. I find this experience extremely interesting and beneficial for my course. For further information about this course contact William Young Tel: 0845 603 1881 or email: william.young@ swc.ac.uk
Tell us about your course? The Gold Engineering Programme is an Advanced Technician Apprenticeship open to students with an excellent academic background who are interested in pursuing a career in the Engineering industry in areas such as Design, Research and Development, Screening Technology maintenance, and Procurement and Manufacturing Management in a structured environment where they effectively ‘learn while they earn’.
What do you hope to do in the future? If I am successful I hope to progress on to a Foundation Degree course also offered at South West College, and then aim towards completing my studies at the University of Ulster with a full Honours Degree. SCHOOL LEAVERS GUIDE 2013
Love the NWRC Experience this September
There are many reasons why students choose to further their education at North West Regional College in Strabane, Limavady and Derry~Londonderry.
From the state-of-the-art learning facilities, to the expertise of the lecturing staff, the College has experienced a steady growth in applications in recent years, with students keen to gain practical qualifications that equip them for university or employment. Before the Class of 2013 finished for the summer, applications for September were already up by 15% on last year. Demand is therefore high for full-time places, but the College is still accepting applications for the majority of the courses that will commence in just a few weeks in Strabane. There’s never been a better time to become an NWRC student, especially given the new opportunities that the College is now providing at the Derry Road Campus in Strabane. With new hairdressing and beauty salons, specialist music facilities, a brand new library and student union area the College has invested to provide local students with facilities to match the quality of the teaching on offer. Students can choose full time options in Page 2 August 2013 The Herald Music Technology, Computing, Early
Years (Children & Young People), Care & Health, Hair & Beauty, and Dental Nursing. This year the College also has a range of new Training for Success options for local school leavers, which provide them with practical skills and a recognised qualification specialising in a vocational subject such as construction skills or hairdressing and beauty therapy. These students also receive a weekly training allowance and work placement opportunities as part of their course. Across all options the College provides the chance to gain the qualifications that employers are looking for. The practical work experience included in these courses is an added benefit in applying for work or a degree level study as NWRC students have a hands-on insight into their chosen career path. The College is proud of its modern facilities, expert staff and the quality of teaching that is delivered. But it is most proud of its students who take full advantage of the opportunities provided to them. In Strabane this year the students in Hairdressing have been a cut above, showcasing their skills across the country and
winning the NWRC top award in Avant Garde. In addition students have contributed to the local community with a range of fundraising activities for local charities. Without the experience, hard work and dedication of the College’s teaching staff, students would not be achieving their potential. From the support staff who assist students with application, financial assistance and pastoral care, to the lecturers who bring their industry experience to the course subjects they teach, students are welcomed into a learning environment designed to help them achieve. In fact, many of this year’s award winning students attribute their success to that support received from their lecturers, the practical nature of studying at NWRC, and the fact they enjoy the NWRC experience. Progressing from GCSEs, students may choose a Level 2 course to boost their qualifications, or move directly into a Level 3 Diploma in a career related area. From this they can gain a recognised qualification with UCAS points equal up to 3 A level passes. A significant number of
Level 3 students choose to then move onto Road Derry-Londonderry, from Monday University or higher education at NWRC. 19th Aug – Friday 23rd August, 10.00am The Training for Success and Apprentice- – 12.30pm or 2.00pm – 4.00pm – course ship programmes that vocational skills for information and careers guidance will be entry into employment, and include work available. North West Regional College has recognised the enjoyment, motivation and enhanced abilities that students gain from participating in skills competitions and the Strabane students didn’t disappoint, with stunning and innovative creations on the runway at the Fir Trees.
Competing on a national scale the local students excelled at the All Ireland Hairdressing Championships held in Belfast in April, with all those competing finishing in the top ten in their categories, while Cheryl Scanlon, Agne Narkeviciute and Angela Quigley shone with top 5 place finishes. The experience of competing with the best from across Ireland stood the Strabane students in good stead for the College’s own Cross Campus event, held in the City Hotel Derry, in May.

Endgame for ‘Heisenberg’ The wait is finally over for fans of ‘Breaking Bad’. The finale season kicked off on 12 on Netflix, just 24 hours after the US. Vince Gilligan’s multi-award winning meth-cooking drama has been one of the most talked-about television dramas in recent years, with mass hysteria that either intrigues or irritates the uninitiated. Well, expect that hysteria to go into hyper-drive over the next few weeks, so either hide under a rock or see what the fuss is all about for yourself and get ready to bingewatch all five series. For those who don’t know, ‘Breaking Band’ focuses on Walter White(played brilliantly
nosed with inoperable lung cancer at the beginning of the series. He turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman(Aaron Paul). Walter has one primary goal and that is to secure his family’s financial future before he dies. His brother-in-law happens to be a DEA agent hunting down the methamphetamine manufacturing kingpin, totally unaware that he’s sharing beers with him most weekends over at the family barbeques. Dark, dramatic and blackly comical in parts, ‘Breaking Bad’ has been compelling viewing and this final series has a lot to live up to. Theories about what will unfold have flooded the internet since the explosive edge of the seat (or toilet bowl) cliff-hanger ending to series five. The fate of Walter/Heisenberg will be revealed soon. Get watching now on Netflix.
Back After The Break....
The finale season of one of the most talk ed about dramas in recent times ‘Breaking Bad’ has just started on Netflix.
Series two of Aaron Sorkin’s sharp political HBO drama ‘The Newsroom’ kicks off on Sky Atlantic on August 26 at 10pm. Set behind the scenes at fictional TV network Atlantis Cable News (ACN), ‘The Newsroom’ follows the story of lead anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) and his team of staff for their nightly news-show.
These include executive producer (and ex-girlfriend) MacKenzie McHale (Emily by Bryan Cranston), a struggling high Mortimer), producer Jim Harper (John Galschool chemistry teacher who is diag- lagher, Jr.), associate producer Maggie

(Alison Pill), economist Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn), researcher/blogger Neal Sampat (Dev Patel) and sozzled ACN news division president Charlie Skinner (the wonderful Sam Waterston). Each episode is built around a major news event from the recent past, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill or the killing of Osama Bin Laden. The news events on the show are always real and familiar to viewers and are a constant backdrop to the interactions between the characters. With acute observations on 21st century US media culture and a sprinting, if at times ‘Gilmore Girls’-like dialogue, the first series of ‘The Newsroom’ impressed, however it was prone to sentiment. Regardless of this, it will be a delight to have Jeff Daniels back
reading yesterday’s news in a new series and the story arc for series two sounds intriguing. The news-team reports, and is then forced to retract, a false news story about the United States Army using sarin gas during the war in Afghanistan in the early 2000s. This story is based on a real-life news scandal from 1998, in which CNN and ‘TIME’ magazine were both criticized for reporting a dubious and unreliably sourced story that the United States had used sarin during the Operation Tailwind excursion in the Vietnam War. It sounds like a good time for Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston) to hit the Bourbon! ‘The Newsroom’ airs on Sky Atlantic from September 2 at 10pm.

• Raises the vibrational frequency of the body. • Helps spiritual growth and emotional clearing.
“I have felt the benefits of Reiki after one visit to Sinead @ The Chrysalis Cove. Sinead is a calm and friendly Practioner, with an intuitive ability that enables her to channel the healing power of Reiki energy. She does this in such a way that is specific to the individual needs of each client. I would recommend her to everyone and I hope to experience it again” (Hugh Mc Clean, Derry).

The Chrysalis Cove
“Having suffered with skin problems all my life I really had tried everything from acupuncture to very restrictive diets. Nothing seemed to work. At my wits end I contacted my local Reiki Practioner to give it a go. I didn’t know much about it and I was sceptical. After only one session I felt a major ‘shift’ in my body and my skin started to heal and wasn’t so itchy. I stopped scratching in my sleep for the first time in years. I am convinced Reiki helped with this, it really can produce amazing results” (Richard). For anyone interested in Learning Reiki at first level (Reiki 1) I am delivering a Reiki 1 workshop in An Creagan, Omagh on 14th September. Alternatively I am happy to deliver workshops on a one to one/small groups (max 3) basis @ The Chrysalis Cove, 5 Lampton Court, Strabane.

Another method is to use your handicap as your bad shot allowance. If you’re a 12 handicap, allow yourself 12 mess ups per round. Every time you hit a poor shot, it’s no problem, just subtract one from your allowance. Developing the acceptance of mistakes and the ability to recover quickly is as valuable to an amateur as spending an hour beating balls on the range. Next time you’re out on the course and hit a bad shot, put it behind you and make the next one a good one; you’ll enjoy your golf more and see your scores improve.

The large number of visitors to the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) stand at this year's Clogher Valley Show underlines the strong support among the farming community for the ongoing drive to reduce fatalities and injuries on local farms. The HSENI stand featured advice on child safety on farms and the 'Stop and Think SAFE' campaign, which focuses on the four main causes of death and injury on our farms - slurry, animals, falls and equipment (SAFE). There were also demonstrations on PTO guarding and advice about the dangers of working with farm machinery and equipment. Here, HSENI's Alex Wallace talks about child safety on farms with Lyndsey Laird from Strabane. Picture: Michael Cooper
