Local businesses supported the event by donating food for the Coffee Morning and prizes for the raffle. A further £420 was raised by 12B2 who raffled a Spanish football jersey. By the time the patient realises they have a problem the damage to vision will be permanent. However if glaucoma is detected early, which can be done during a routine eye examination, the disease can be treated by a special eye drop.

Kids Eyecare is so important

Eye examinations are essential for every child's healthcare and personal development.
If children have poor vision, they will find it difficult to learn at school as well as enjoy everyday childhood activities. Research shows that one in five school children have an undetected eye problem. As 80% of a child's learning occurs visually, many children cannot see well enough to reach their full potential. Typical warning signs are excessive blinking, squinting, peering closely at books or TV, and poor performance at school. As well as the ‘common’ or more well known problems such as long sightedness and squints, we can also screen kids for less well known problems such as ‘Visual Stress’ which can lead to reading difficulties and migraine (in both kids and adults) and which can benefit from coloured overlays which are very precisely tested for via a computer based test program. Young eyes Children should have their first eye examination before starting school. It does not matter if a child is too young to talk or read a letter chart. Our practice uses a range of techniques and modern equipment to detect visual problems at an early age. Parents are also encouraged to take part in the eye test and ask any questions about their child's vision. We stock a wide range of frames specially designed for young faces with styles ranging from trendy colourful plastics for

girls to modern stylish boys frames. Many have soft nose pads for extra comfort and spring hinges to stand up to the rough and tumble of everyday life. The vast majority of our children's frames are free while any child or teenager who is still at school and wants a designer frame can do so with a 25% reduction off the full retail price. Free eye tests and spectacle lenses Even if nothing appears to be wrong it is important that children should have an eye test at least once a year. It costs nothing to have this done under the NHS and all standard kid’s spectacle lenses are supplied free of charge.

Children’s Entertainment An Grianan Theatre presents ‘A Bag of Queens’ by Little John Nee in October. It’s a musical odyssey that races along with Little John’s trademark comic storytelling style, exploring themes of ‘random acts of kindness’, responsibility, loneliness, greed and creative expression in a gentle and fun way. Santa and the Snow Queen is here in December, a brilliant new show by City Theatre Dublin full of music, dance, magic and adventure. In January its panto time as Puddle Alley Theatre Group brings us Strabane’s biggest community panto ‘Little Red Riding Hood’.
Country Legends With over 40 performances it certainly is a packed programme with the new season opening with the heartthrob of country music Derek Ryan. Derek Ryan, with his youthful good looks, sun-kissed blonde hair and sharp suits is whipping up frenzy amongst the scores of fans who are dancing to his tunes across the country. The County Carlow singer songwriter has been pivotal in the new found attractiveness of country music amongst younger people who are flocking to the sound of the steel guitar and fiddle in their droves. Now with two critically acclaimed albums on release including his most recent, ‘Made of Gold’, a five piece band and thousands of fans, Derek is well ahead of his dream. Derek Ryan

In November the wonderful Warren Smyth will be joined by George Hamilton and Irelands top entertainer Jimmy Buckley will be joined by the incredible Susan McCann.
If you are a lover of drama the Alley has a superb range of productions between September and December. In November Green Shoot productions brings a play that stares hard at one of Northern Irelands most iconic and controversial figures. ‘Paisley & Me’ looks at Ian Paisley and explores what is to be a Protestant in Northern Ireland today. Now is the time to embrace social media
Supercharge your business Facebook The Strabane Herald Facebook page is just over two years old and with over 8,000 followers and counting, this makes it the largest newspaper Facebook page in Tyrone, Derry, Donegal and Fermanagh, quite a feat when you consider Strabane has a population of around 20,000! The Herald was one of the first to embrace social media over two years ago by running promotions, posting local photos and keeping their Facebook fresh but not overwhelming. The idea was to have a digital presence online along with one in print media. This has worked wonders for the local paper as proprietor Barney Vaughan stated “Technology has moved on a lot in the last five years or so, we decided to embrace digital media rather than be fearful of it. We believed we could create a product where print and digital media could help each other rather than hinder and I believe we have achieved that in tough economic conditions.” A lot of newspapers and media have fallen in the past few years but Barney believes the road his paper took toward social media has helped to keep his newspaper strong during tough times. “There is no doubt advertising trends have changed, most companies want to show they are at one with Facebook by displaying the ‘find us on Facebook’ logos on their adverts. They want to show that they have an online presence when the shop doors shut at 5.30pm. We have been inundated with companies looking for advice and guidance when it comes to setting up their Facebook pages”. Facebook for business is in its infancy as far as research and knowledge and the best methods to exploit its powers. Ask many business people about how best to take full advantage of social media and they won’t know where to start. There is no shame in this, we all have to start somewhere and we only learn from experience and mistakes. It is only now however that local business people are realising the potential promotional powers that a strong Facebook page can offer and to utilise this you need the proper guidance which we have provided to a lot of local companies. Local businessman Sabby Singh of Masala Express (Strabane) & Mamasala (Derry) has used this to his advantage by boosting his Facebook following by 175% in just a few
short weeks! “We have always advertised with the Strabane Herald, and they offered us a chance to utilise their Facebook page, they guided us on what to do and I have to say, we are extremely happy with the results so far, we will continue to grow and use social and print media to help us grow”. Another good example of a thriving award winning facebook page is the Mount Errigal Hotel which has over 9,000 followers. It is a superb example of how to properly boost your business and they got started by attracting followers from the Herald Facebook page! Other good examples include Gormley Opticians and Toot Takes All Bookmakers.

More and more the Herald is experiencing an ever increasing demand from the business community to get them up to speed on taking advantage of social media. If you would like to know how to improve your business presence on facebook or if you need advice on social media in general please do not hesitate to contact us. Call 028 71 886759 between 10am and 5pm or email us on strabaneheraldads@gmail.com.

Sara’s half the size but twice as happy! After losing nearly 11st, Sara Fremantle is feeling fit and fabulous in her fifties. The 54-year-old has a new figure, new career and a new man – and she wants to tell people that it’s never too late to lose weight. Overweight for more than 30 years, Sara thought she was destined to stay that way for the rest of her life. EyeWear Opticians and Raymond Curran Optometrists are pleased to announce that EyeWear are to take over the provision of eye-care for all of Mr. Curran’s patients with immediate effect. All records have been transferred to EyeWear Opticians. Raymond Curran Optometrists have been established in Strabane for over 25 years and would have continued but for the fact that Mr. Curran has been appointed to the role of Assistant Director/Head of Optometry of the Health and Social Care Board for Northern Ireland, a role which prevents Mr. Curran from continuing as a full-time optometrist. “While exciting challenges lie ahead for myself, it is with a heavy heart that I have had to relinquish my day to day role within the Strabane community. Fortunately EyeWear have agreed to continue looking after my many loyal friends and patients.” Mr. Curran said. Speaking on behalf of EyeWear Opticians,
Ryan McGrath said “At EyeWear, we have always aimed to provide the highest standard of care for all our patients and to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Curran’s patients is a great honour. We also look forward to Mr. Curran assisting us by continuing to test within EyeWear on a part-time visiting role.” EyeWear will be contacting all of Mr. Curran’s patients individually in the near future to explain the changes in greater detail, but in the meantime anyone requiring an eye exam nation can contact EyeWear Opticians and take advantage of the offer of a FREE eyetest for everyone. Blossoms, Brides and a Book 2012 has been a busy year for the Kee Family of Stranorlar who have been celebrating 120 years of ownership of their well-known Hotel. Four generations on from 1892, when William James Kee paid the princely sum of £400 to buy this Donegal gem, the family continues to own and manage this historic property. The first Kees had settled in County Donegal around 1600 and three hundred years later were known locally as a business family. So too were The Millars, who had originally established this old posting inn as a place for fine food and hospitality in 1845. Stories have passed through the generations, from the days when the Kee Family ran a horse taxi service, looking after commercials travellers who came by rail into Stranorlar. A sidecar would be rented and the driver would take them around the shops, stores and pubs where they conducted their business. The horses used were always black because William James was also a busy undertaker. The hotel always enjoyed historic associations with the good and the grand, from the Blind Poetess of Donegal to Prince Napoleon who
increased interest from bridesto-be and, as a direct result, has introduced a new Crystal Wedding Package offering incredible value at just €39.50 per person. Available Off Season and Midweek for 2013 and 2014, the package includes red carpet champagne reception for the bridal party and cocktail reception for all guests. Equally welcome is the tea and coffee on arrival, with biscuits, scones and finger
Kee’s Hotel Stranorlar/Ballybofey, County Donegal overnighted there. So, as part of Kee’s 120th celebrations, a book will be launched in September, recalling many of the tales and adventures experienced by the family through the generations. Another exciting new development at the hotel is the creation of The Terrace Garden, leading directly into the Ballroom through French doors. With original features such as the arched door at the rotunda entrance, the lanternlit covered walkway connecting
the main hotel to the banqueting suite and the large central wrought iron pagoda, guests can now enjoy drinks receptions or share casual outdoor dining. This new garden contains so many interesting architectural features that it is the perfect backdrop for any wedding photographer. In the evening, the Terrace Garden becomes a romantic space, beautifully lit and radiating a totally different atmosphere. As a result of the new Terrace Garden, the hotel is experiencing
sandwiches. The package includes a five course meal with wine and evening reception with finger buffet. Lots of additional elements are also built into the price such as chair covers and bows, bridal suite and bedrooms for parents, a two night break with dinner on the 1st Anniversary, as well as a pair of Engraved Cavan Crystal Champagne Flutes. But the amazing value doesn’t stop there. As part of their year of celebration, Kee’s are inviting all couples, who book their wedding reception at the hotel before 31 January 2013, the opportunity to put their name into the Grand Prize Draw worth €5000 in wedding services and vouchers. Partners in this incredible Draw include Gerard McHugh Photography, Ballybofey Florists, Gerard Mc Girr Wedding Services, Heidi’s Creative Cakes, McElhinney’s Stores, Eternal Beauty, De Bon Hair, Mc Callions Jewellers, Blacktown Limos and the Bellbridge House Hotel in County Clare. With all this going on in 2012, it’s no wonder Kee’s Hotel are having a busy time of it!

Several local community leaders, stakeholders and statutory have met in a bid to address problems identified at the disabled access ramp on the River Mourne near Melvin. Those present included the Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), community group leaders and assorted local residents. The area has seen increased reports of anti-social behaviour, underage drinking and criminal damage recently. Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Brian McMahon, PCSP Chair said: “It gave everyone in attendance the opportunity to discuss what measures can be put in place to try and prevent similar
issues arising in the future. A number of actions were agreed and key partners will continue to work on these over the coming weeks in a bid to achieving a satisfactory solution.” He added: “Strabane PCSP was established to work with the local community to identify issues of concern and to offer potential solutions. We will continue to work in partnership with organisations and individuals to try and address emerging issues within our local communities. ” The Policing and Commuity Safety Partnership was set up last year to help make the community safer. It’s statutory duties include engaging with the community on local issues of concern, and identify and priortise the problems which need addressed.

Forever Young?
Local Music NEWS Paul Tully
At the beginning of last month, the Rolling Stones celebrated 50 years since their first gig together. At the end of last month, front man Mick Jagger celebrated his 69th birthday. Both events were lauded and positively spun in the media. Out rolled a fashionably weathered yet non-greying Mick and the rest of the band for the launch of the Daily Mirror’s photographic book ‘The Rolling Stones at 50’, partying, by all reports, till 5am. It also emerged that the band will be hitting the road again soon, with a headline spot at next summer’s Glastonbury Festival rumoured. With a combined age of 273, it appears that the media, and indeed the fans, can’t get enough of this well oiled machine. The same cannot be said however for Madonna Louise Ciccone, who at 53 is but a mere schoolgirl compared to Mick and ‘Keef’. Madonna’s latest tour, like her last, has been put through the media grill for a number of reasons, one being her muscular physique, which many observers believe to be a turn-off considering her age. Her recent concert at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium received mixed reviews.
Staying on the topic of Strabane’s Paul Tully and Derry’s SOAK, both of these young local artists have kindly sprinkled new material on a very appreciative public.
The everlasting Rolling Stones can still party to 5am!
stripper’ and claimed that her ‘career is over’. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but here’s a question: as Mick Jagger will be slithering across the stage next summer while hitting 70 years old, will he face a similar storm? Iggy Pop is now 65 and still running around topless, and occasionally trouser-less! Does Mick or Iggy ever be told to “put it away”? Personally, I like Madonna. I would not be a fan of anything she’s done since her collaborations with William Orbit, but I admire her desire to push forward and remake and remodel - something she excelled at for many years. Arguably it hasn’t worked this time for her, but do we really need to hear it from creatively redundant jukeboxes like Elton John? Even the Stones gave up on the present tense about 30 years ago. All of that is fine if there’s an audience for it but there is something very admirable about 50-something artists like Madonna and U2 taking a show out on the road with a belief in the music they are currently making. Again, even if U2’s last album failed to set the world alight, they certainly got a smoother ride through the press than Madonna.
Has Madonna dragged her career on too long?
While not there personally, anyone I know who was there had a great time. However, some members of the audience publically aired their gripes about the rain-soaked performance: some having an issue with the setlist; some having an issue with her appearance and dance routines, which were not, they believed, suitable for children in the audience – a valid gripe, if indeed it was anybody else but Madonna, who it is safe to say has some form in this area, that they had just paid money to see! Others had an issue with the weather, which as far as I know wasn’t down to Madonna! Something seeped through in all these opinions both positive and negative in relation to Madonna’s Dublin show. Looking like she does at the age that she is seems to be an issue. “Unlady-like”, “desperate” and “take your mother home Lourdes” was just the beginning of the vitriolic storm on the Internet forums and social network sites. Elton John, who is now making a bit of a habit of publically airing his
Cher to tour again at aged 66.
There definitely appears to be a male bias when it comes to aging rock or popstars. Madonna, Debbie Harry and Cher, who at 66 is set to tour again in 2013, are continually scrutinised for their appearance and even their right to be on the stage of their time of life, yet the blokes get a pass. Last month, Bruce Springsteen, 62, blessed Dublin with seven hours of heart-stopping, pants-dropping, house-rocking, earth-quaking, booty-shaking,
Viagra-taking, love-making rock n’ roll. Earnest, grounded and exuding a humility and almost obsessive desire to sweat blood for his audience, Springsteen is a rock n’ roll treasure. Yet is he not without his own alterations, no matter how subtle and discreet they may be? Does the ‘Boss’ get pulled up by the media for it? No, and its right that he shouldn’t. To quote Cher, “If I want to put my t*** on my back, it’s nobody’s business but my own.” Paul McCartney, 70, still gets the call to close all the big events and miss his cue so badly he must think Ringo is back behind the kit. Bob Dylan, 71, is about to release a new album called ‘Tempest’ – his 35th studio album – and his “Never-ending Tour” shows no sign of slowing down, even if the shows themselves can be unpredictable and divisive with Dylan continually deconstructing his catalogue of songs before an audience’s eyes almost nightly. If you’re prepared for it, it’s a fascinating thing to observe, yet would a female artist be allowed such room to manoeuvre like this old boys club? Rock and pop stars are no different from the rest of us – the older we get, the older ‘old’ gets and if many of us had the chance we’d probably do it all just as they are doing it now. The aging male rock or popstar seems to have all the fun though. They can still slither and swoon across the stage or, thanks to the success of Johnny Cash’s ‘American Recordings’ series of albums in the nineties, they can now work with someone like Rick Rubin, strip the music down and present their own brand of “not dark yet, but it’s getting there” reflections on mortality. Neil Diamond did it and now even Tom Jones is doing it! Tom Jones! Will ‘It’s not Unusual’ and ‘Delilah’ now be banished from his setlist? I seriously doubt it. We let the boys grow up and stay forever young all at the same time. The ladies should be extended the same privilege to grow old gracefully or disgracefully if they so please. After considering all of this, I for one am already looking forward to another 50 years of great music from SOAK and Paul Tully. Rust never sleeps!
Firstly to the Strabane singer-songwriter, who has recently been delivering some spellbinding performances in the Alley Theatre and Dicey Riley’s. After captivating audiences with his original material, Paul has finally got round to recording some of these tracks and they’re now available for you all to enjoy online on Soundcloud. Simply visit www.soundcloud.com/paul-tully and be taken somewhere special via wonderful self-penned tracks such as ‘Ways of the World’, ‘I Will Wait for You’ and the mesmerising ‘Reign Down Your Love On Me’, which was recently recorded at Pete Doherty’s Neon Noise studio. With the smooth and autumnal flavourings of classic James Taylor and Van Morrison present throughout, this fine collection of tracks will do just fine until we’re finally blessed with a debut album from the Pontius Pilots front man. SOAK at Glasgowbury
Meanwhile, SOAK, aka 16 year-old Bridie MondsWatson, fresh from being one of the highlights at this year’s Glasgowbury festival, has just released her second EP, ‘Sea Creatures’. It follows the release of her debut EP ‘Trains’, which was critically acclaimed across the board. Impressive and rightly celebrated as ‘Trains’ was, ‘Sea Creatures’ is even better and captures one of the truly exciting new talents of 2012. The atmospheric yet subtle production brings a maturity to the tracks without taking away the fact that this is the work of a teenager with a gift of cutting to the core in the most simplistic and beautiful fashion. ‘Sea Creatures’ is now available to download on iTunes. Both SOAK and Paul Tully have been involved in the Jammhouse sessions at Derry’s Playhouse. Since it started in March the sessions have gone from strength to strength, with hundreds of music lovers through The Playhouse doors, as well as the Jammhouse’s involvement with the massively successful Carnival of Colours and Clipper Celebrations in the City. The Jammhouse is still keen to hear from any bands just starting out who would like some stage space with other musicians, and the regular sofa sessions are open to all artists who get in touch at facebook.com/thejammhouse.

Strabane and Omagh District Councils focus on Wind farms West Tyrone A joint delegation from Omagh District Council and Strabane District Council held a very “positive and productive” meeting with the Minister for the Environment to discuss the payment of community benefits from wind farms in West Tyrone recently.
Local Sinn Fein MLA Michaela Boyle has appealed for people to respond promptly to the Department of Social Development’s consultation on benefits assessments.
The meeting follows concerns within both Councils regarding the value of community benefit being paid by wind farm developers locally. Both Councils have established a joint working group on this issue and it has been meeting regularly since early 2012. The Fermanagh Trust also have published a report which reveals that the renewable energy industry are paying a lower value of community benefits to host communities in Northern Ireland compared to Scotland, England and Wales. Councillor Frankie Donnelly from Omagh District Council explained: “West Tyrone has a significant wind energy resource and currently hosts approximately 50% of wind farms in the North of Ireland and generates nearly 50% of the region’s wind energy. West Tyrone is experiencing unique cumulative impacts so both Councils want our rural host communities to benefit from the growth in this industry locally.”

will be generated by renewable sources by 2020. The majority of this will be generated from onshore wind farms. It will see a further 1,700 Mega Watts connected to the grid and will increase the number and prevalence of wind farms in West Tyrone.
working group explained: “The working group have held a very positive and productive meeting with the Minister for the Environment on the issue of community benefits recently. The group outlined the need for a regionally defined minimum standard for payment of community benefits by the The Chairman of Strabane District Renewable Energy Industry. representatives from the renewable energy industry on this issue. Meetings were also held with the Planning Service and Northern Ireland Electricity.”
The West Tyrone MLA said: “Many of us working in the welfare sector would have concerns about the processes of the WCA (Work Capability Assessment) and its impact on our most vulnerable citizens. “Therefore I am appealing to groups and individuals, particularly within the disability/mental health sectors and those that have already fallen foul of the system to bring that evidence forward and help us challenge and change this system. “The Social Development Minister has launched a short consultation on the Work Capability Assessment process which closes on September 14th and its vital evidence is presented by those that know best such as advice workers and clients. “There is no doubt that within our communities people are fearful of the whole Tory welfare reform agenda and through using our influence and presenting the facts we are seeking to protect those worst affected. “Therefore I am appealing to the range of groups in the sector for them to avail of this opportunity and demonstrate the negative impact being experienced by many people undergoing this assessment process.”
“It is important that this growth in industry on our landscape is controlled, developed responsibly and used to sustain and regenerate our rural communities” said Councillor Donnelly. To Advertise 71 886759(NI) or 048 71 886759 (From ROI)

‘Rockin by the River’ festival delights locals and tourists once again! PLUMBRIDGE was bustling with music, entertainment and people as the village played host to the Rockin’ by the River festival for a 10th time recently. Large crowds of locals and visitors from all corners of Ireland, the UK and even America, travelled to Glenelly enjoy the entertainment, which included electric performances by The High Kings, Mike Denver, Justin McGurk & The Boogie Men and The Crazy Folkers. The annual community festival spanned two weekends again this year, proving its reputation as one of the country’s top summer events. Speaking about this year’s events, organising committee Chairperson Kellie McGaughey said: “We would like to thank everyone who came to Plumbridge and contributed to the huge success of Rockin’ by the River 2011. We would also like to thank all the volunteers and everyone who helped to play a part in the Festival run so smoothly, it is their hard work and dedication that makes the Glenelly Festival one of the biggest and best local festivals in Ireland.” The annual festival is run by Glenelly Gaelic Football Club, and operates on a cross community basis. With a wide variety of entertainment on offer, there was something to suit all ages. World renowned folk group The High Kings got things underway on the opening weekend with a rousing performance which will go down as one of the highlights of the festival’s 10 year existence. Folk classics such as Leaving of Liverpool and Rocky Road to Poland were performed with gusto by the band and audience alike. The following night almost 100 people attended the Sperrin Ramble and walked five miles through the stunning Glenelly Valley, raising £500 for Newtownstewart based charity TAMA in the process. A teenage disco and a Big Bingo competition - where £4000 was given away - kept things ticking over mid-

Dancing duos from all over the Northwest took part. The standard was extremely high but the father and daughter duo of Michael and Erin Campbell representing Urney GFC were eventually crowned winners. Their prize was £500 and a full football kit for their club, sponsored by O’Neills. The always popular Mike Denver excited country fans before the penultimate night’s entertainment came in the form of the raucous Crazy Folkers. The County Antrim six-piece were true to their name as the packed crowd lapped up their high-tempo brand of folk and rock. Earlier in the day crowds thronged Plumbridge for the annual vintage rally which brought a special atmosphere to this idyllic village. The greatest and arguably the most popular country singer in the world, Charley Pride, is coming to Ireland for his very last concert tour, to entertain, greet and meet his loyal Irish fans and bid them a final farewell. For the past 40 years, this wonderful performer has remained one of the Top 20 bestselling country artists of all time. On RCA Records, he is second in sales only to Elvis Presley.Despite all his success, Charley Pride is still a very humble man with a great love of people and of course, as his fans know, he has a great sense of humour which adds to the entertainment value of his live shows. His hits are legendary, like “Chrystal Chandeliers”, “Anybody going to San Antone?”, “ Kiss an angel good morning” “ All i have to offer you is me”, “Every Heart should have one”, “I’m so afraid of losing you” “Does my ring hurt your finger?” etc, etc. Since news filtered out of Charley’s farewell concerts at the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran on Friday and Saturday October 26 and 27 next, tickets have been snapped up, fans ensuring that they will not miss his last shows. Sadness has been mixed with happiness that they are being given the opportunity to say “farewell” and “thanks” for the memories. Showtours, who have been promoting music festivals in Bundoran for close on 20 years, have just announced spectacular “Charley Pride Farewell Music Festivals” for Bundoran

Kindness
...write your own story!
I believe that if you wake up each morning with a notion on your mind to do an act of kindness to another person, you will feel better. It follows that when you actually carry out the kind act, you will feel even better about yourself. I also believe that there is kindness in everyone, well at least everyone I have met.
However many people may be afraid to demonstrate kindness in case it would show them up as weak or vulnerable in some way and leave the door open for someone to take advantage of them. This can mean that such people only show their rough exterior which often hides a kind heart. In fact I believe kindness shows great strength and if someone else happens to take advantage of my kindness, is that a valid enough reason for me to refrain from being kind? I don’t believe so, all that does for me is to reinforce the fact that I would always rather show kindness than abuse it. There is a difference in being kind and creating helplessness. Sometimes in our enthusiasm to be kind we can create a situation where we allow the other person to do nothing for themselves and eventually that person becomes ‘helpless’ and can do very little for themselves from then on. This is anything but kind, in fact it could be argued that it is abusive to the other person. A simple guideline to prevent this happening is to do something for the other person that they cannot do for themselves. If you believe that they could possibly do a particular task themselves but Page 4 January 2012 The Herald
Workshops & Seminars
Kindness are not getting it done, highlight what has to be done and encourage them to do it by perhaps suggesting easier ways to get it done or helping them to do it in stages. You can do it for them once or twice, however the objective is to empower them to do as much as they can for themselves at every opportunity. Initially the other person may need your help to get started and once started you can leave them to get on with it. Another thing that can happen is that you could get yourself into the position where you are doing so much for other people that you are neglecting your own well-being. This can happen when looking after a sick relative for example, and you can feel overwhelmed with all the tasks that need to be done and often a great sense of guilt if you do not get all jobs completed. If this happens to be the case, remember you are no good to anyone if YOU become ill, therefore the most loving thing
you can do for someone else is to make sure you are well. This can mean letting someone know that you are feeling overwhelmed and exploring what help is available for caregivers. Sometimes it can be as simple as asking another relative to share the load with you. I know this in itself can sometimes be difficult to do as many caregivers are reluctant to admit being overwhelmed often to the point that they become ill before recognising or accepting the fact that they are just doing too much. In order to prevent this happening, establish initially what you are prepared to do, and are fit to do, and seek help from someone For further information on dates and venues contact: else to do the rest. Strabane shopkeeper says college is wasting money
Despite being the recent recipient of an award for its teaching of science, technology, engineering and maths, the South-West College needs to be more thrifty with its marketing campaign, according to a local shopkeeper. Patsy Kelly, who owns a shop in Strabane, says money spent on glossy magazines to promote the college is being wasted. The college, which has campuses across Tyrone and one in Enniskillen, also recently announced it is spending £2.5million on new technology centres at three of its campuses. After seeing many of the high end promotional publications discarded from newspapers which they were inserted in recently, Mr Kelly says the college should have a more targeted advertising campaign. He said: “These booklets have been put, at some expense, in copies of local papers. Sadly, as a shopkeeper who stocks the papers, I am noticing huge numbers of these booklets being discarded, whether in bins or on the floor of the shop.” Mr Kelly said despite being sympathetic to the College’s aims in promoting their courses and being a supporter of the role that Further Education plays in improving the lives of our young people, he

The Eyes have it! Hi Ladies, this month we are going to focus on the eyes. The most common question we get asked is what colour would suit me best and how do I apply it, well here you have it: Blue Eyes With blue eyes, you should stay far away from blue eye shadow. If you want your eyes to pop and look mesmerizing then try wearing earthtones, such as browns with a slight purple base, taupe, and slate coloured greys. If you want to have a little fun outside of the earth-tones, then try a nice rose coloured eye shadow. The coolness from the pink/purple eye shadow will be a really nice contrast to your blue eyes.
Brown Eyes Brown eyes can get away with wearing almost any colour of eye shadow. But if you want your eyes to pop then try either green eye shadow or pink eye shadow. With brown eyes, you can also use blue eye shadow, and if you have gold flecks in your eyes you may want to try an eye shadow that has a gold shimmer to it. Brown eyes can even pull-off wearing brown eye shadow, but be careful because certain tones can look muddy against your beautiful brown eyes.
Green/Hazel Eyes In order to get green eyes to pop, you should try wearing various purple shades. The contrast in colour to your eyes will make them seem more dramatic. If you want your eyes to stand out but look more natural, you may want to try
warmer mocha brown shades or warm colours with slight orange undertones. Basic eye shadow colours for green eyes would be earth tones with slight hints of gold, taupe colours, mocha browns, and lavender-purple shades. Since most green and hazel eyes have a variety of flecks, feel free to experiment with these colours so you can find the perfect one for your eyes.

Highlight the eye - apply a highlighter all over the eyelid, extending to brow bone, this will illuminate & brighten the eyes. Define the eye – Apply your chosen shade of shadow to the eyelid, start at the inside corners and blend outwards. To further define the eye apply an eye pencil to the upper lash line and softly smudge into the shadow. ADAM SCOTT & THE OPEN :
By Shaun McGonagle
DID HE BLOW IT OR NOT?? How did you feel as you watched the dramatic last four holes unfold at The Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes? Did you feel elation for Ernie Els as he holed a birdie putt on the last which subsequently turned out to be the winning putt or did you feel distressed for the way Adam Scott appeared to ‘blow’ his chance of a first Major by finishing with four bogeys in the last four holes? Certainly, Ernie Els himself appeared to be a little deflated in his interview straight after the win as it became apparent he was The Open champion again. Els could obviously sense the pain of loss Adam Scott would have to cope with initially and in the aftermath of the tournament. The comments after the event have been very predictable in the sense of the focus on the apparent fact Scott ‘choked’ and he ‘blew’ his chance. On the surface of it, he did, but if we perhaps look a little deeper into what ACTUALLY happened, then we might be able to build something of a more complete picture. At the University of Chicago, a Professor of Psychology called Sian Beilock has spent her academic life studying the phenomena of choking and her fascinating book simply called ‘Choke’ gives some tremendously in depth analysis of what our brain is actually doing under pressure when we succumb to a situation and blow our chance to win. Beilock talks about how under stress the expert brain can actually change and become like a beginner again. When an expert performs well, the motor brain areas are in control and he is largely unconscious of what he is actually doing.
Skill can only take you so far in golf, the mental game is just as important as Adam Scott found out. He is pretty much on ‘auto pilot’. Under pressure Beilock explains how we can become beginners again if we think too much and the areas of the brain involved with attention, memory and control become too active. We think too much and then ‘do’ too little. Yet, did Adam Scott really start hitting shots that looked like a beginner? Did he start to hit the ball way off line in the manner of other high profile choking disasters? What we do need to remember is the last four
www.golffocus.net holes at Royal Lytham are INCREDIBLY difficult when the wind starts to blow and for the first time on Sunday afternoon, the course started to bear its teeth as the wind speed started to noticeably increase. For sure, Scott didn’t hit perfect shots on the last four holes. He pulled his approach on 15 and 17 and three putted the 16th but he hit a tremendous tee shot on the 17th after three putting and then even on the 19th he hit a superb third shot approach after being in the bunker of the tee. Yes, the shots were less than perfect but he certainly wasn’t hitting it off the map. For me the real key was the DECISION on the 18th to hit a three wood off the tee. As the hole was playing with a slightly helping wind that day and the absolute key to the hole is to avoid the fairway cross bunkers, then perhaps the key to the tee shot was to either lay up well short with an iron and leave yourself a medium to long iron approach OR to stand there and smash a driver over everything and go for a three in an attempt to actually still win the tournament as opposed to making a four to tie. After all, Ernie had made a birdie with that exact play. The irony also was Scott had driven the ball beautifully all day, even on the closing holes. Could it be argued his Caddie, the man who took such credit for ‘his’ win with Adam Scott in the World Golf Championship, could be held somewhat accountable for what seemed a poor tactical decision? It is tough to say and easy for us who were not actually there to speculate but for me, it is important Adam Scott really looks at the facts of what happened rather than being drawn into too many stories about how he ‘choked’ under pressure.
I do think we sometimes confuse choking with a task which suddenly becomes incredibly difficult and any errors are hugely magnified. The absolute key for him is that way he DEALS with the loss of the tournament much more than discussion of how or why he may or may not have choked. There is a wonderful video of Greg Norman in a press conference on YouTube the day after his catastrophic collapse in the US Masters in 1996 when he threw away a 7 shot lead in the final round to a relentless Nick Faldo. In the video, it seems the press are actually more deflated than he is! He makes the comment that nobody died out there and I have 40 million dollars in the bank and I AM a good player, I just wasn’t a good player YESTERDAY! He manages to give a perspective on what could have been a career ending performance. The fact that Norman went on to win other Major after that is testimony to his great resilience. Hopefully, Adam Scott can look back on the experience of Lytham and learn from it without there being too much emotional damage. He is too good a player not to have a Major win at some point. What can the rest of us who play golf learn though from these great champions and the struggle to close out a tournament and secure a victory, when you have the opportunity presented to you on a plate? Pressure is pressure in the sense that the feeling you will have in your system to try to win the club championship, get your handicap below 10 or even break a hundred for the first time, will be exactly the same as the sensations the great players feel. Tension is tension, it is just the relative situation that changes.

A fundraising walk took place back on the 1st of July from Maggies Bar and Restaurant, Carrickmore, St.Johnston to Binnion Mass Rock. 54 young and not so young completed the walk in splendid sunshine and as you can see from the pictures stunning views were experienced along the way. €727 was raised for the purchase of a wheel chair lift for
the mini bus for Ballyduff Community Group Home, Lifford. Special thanks to all who helped in any way and particularly to local woman Kay Mahon for throwing open her home with refreshments to wearied pilgims. It is hoped to make this walk an annual event...so see you next year.
