Two way traffic flow returns to Bridge Street...for now

After meeting with local councillors, residents and traders, the Roads Service has announced that a normal two way traffic flow system will be reintroduced to Bridge Street in Strabane this Friday, April 18 and operate as such until Monday, May 12, when the one way temporary traffic management system will be reintroduced. The controversial roads scheme had reduced Strabane’s Bridge Street to a one-way system, with the potential, traders believed, to seriously hurt local businesses. Those very traders aired their views along with local councillors as they met with Roads Service Manager Declan McBride on the Bridge Street site on Thursday, April 10.

This has to come to a resolution. Otherwise, we could have businesses in this town that could be on their knees or closed within 12 weeks by 40 percent as soon as the work began. Proprietor, Adrian Coyle viewed the one-way situation as “unsustainable”. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ he said, “It has affected everybody, not just the businesses on this street but businesses throughout the town as a whole. Our trade went down 40 percent from the first day of the road works. It’s just so frustrating to see such a big job being carried out with so few workmen on the street. Three months might

Huge Tailbacks

After the meeting concluded, the ‘Herald’ asked the Roads Service Manager Declan McBride, who “I know loads of elderly drivers who have told me listened to the concerns of councillors, businesses that they simply do not use the roundabout at Asda. and residents, what he had taken from the meeting However, the current traffic flow would force and what the next step might be. elderly people to do just that. We’re going to lose that trade. They are not going to drive the whole “I’m very mindful of the impact that this scheme way around the town, negotiate the roundabout at has had the traders and residents. We have a Asda that they prefer to avoid, just to stay loyal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of all to me. That business may migrate elsewhere and people that pass through this site and therefore we when it goes you may not get it back. Our morning clearly have to demarcate a way for pedestrians and afternoon trade has been affected. People are and a way for traffic and also ensure that it’s a safe avoiding the Bridgend, there’s no doubt about it. If place of work. So we had to mix all that together and that is why we chose the one-way system. But I can assure you, having listened to the comments from councillors, residents and business people we’ll take it all back with us and reassess it,” he said.

The roads scheme is part of a £400,000 environmental improvement project set to include paving of existing footpaths and the provision of a new cycle track. While an appreciation for the end product of the scheme was expressed at the meeting, the immediate and practical concerns of local businesses, motorists and residents took precedence as the one way system had caused huge tailbacks. In no short terms, councillors told the Roads Service Manager that the situation had to be resolved, particularly as the road works were scheduled to last for 12 weeks.

The very next day, Friday, April 11, Mr McBride issued the following statement on behalf of the Roads Service. “The one way temporary traffic management system for Bridge Street will remain in place until midday on Friday, April 18. From midday on Friday, April 18 the normal two way traffic flow will be reintroduced to Bridge Street. This normal two way traffic flow will remain in place up to and including Sunday, May 11. The one way temporary traffic management system will be reintroduced on Monday 12th May. not appear to be a long time but when you’re stuck in the middle of it you certainly feel the effects and as things stand, the situation is unsustainable. I’m just hopeful that a solution can be found as soon as possible.”

this situation continues as it stands you may have to look at reducing hours and supplies. However, it takes time before you can come to a decision like that and to make sure it’s not a knee-jerk reaction,” Mr McFadden explained.

Seamus McFadden, who runs the newsagents on Bridge Street, also observed a change in trade since the work began and also voiced his concerns at the meeting about elderly drivers being re-routed to Riverview Chippy, which has been a long stand- busy roundabout areas of the town that they are ing business in Bridge Street, saw its trade drop normally more comfortable in avoiding.

Meanwhile, across the street from McFadden’s Newsagents, Joelene McAnenny of hairdressing salon Funky Snips anticipated losing a number of clients because of the road works.

Councillor Patsy Kelly said, “This has to come to a resolution. Otherwise, we could have businesses in this town that could be on their knees or closed within 12 weeks. That’s how grave this situation is. We simply cannot afford to lose jobs and for this to cripple Strabane. The Road Service has now heard the frustrations of everybody within Bridge Street and the town and they have taken everything on board.”

to be done I suppose and no doubt it will look great when complete. At the same time, over 12 weeks I will probably lose some clients and when you lose them it’s hard to get them back again,” she said.

“It has affected my business yes but the work has

“There will be no resurfacing road works taking place from midday April 18 until Sunday, April 27. Site works will recommence on Monday, April 28. These changes have been made possible by selecting stretches of footway and breaking these stretches into smaller zones. One of these zones can be resurfaced with two way traffic flow in operation. These changes may affect the delivery timescale for these works. The management of the works is continually under review, to ensure that the works are carried out without risk to the health and safety of any person.”

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy then you could get involved in the live setup and sound engineering side of the music industry. Whether it’s song writing, playing drums, guitar or keyboards we have something for you. In addition to learning about music and music technology, there will be opportunities to learn about filmmaking and music video production. We have a videographer on the team who is offering up-and-coming bands, as well as those bands formed on the PULSE programme, the chance to shoot a music video. We are also offering any young local stars in the making a chance to record a track or two, if you are eligible to sign up to the programme and want to avail of this opportunity. We have many opportunities and potential projects for you to sink your teeth into in a relaxed, supportive and productive environment, but we also want to help those involved to become more equipped for further training and/or work with our ultimate aim to progress participants into eventual employment. One of the main aims of Customized Training Services/PULSE project is to hopefully give each and every participant the confidence and belief in themselves to develop as a person and find their own path to success. PULSE can also offer a variety of qualifications, which might make a welcome addition to your CV. Some of our current participants are already working towards gaining a qualification in DJing techniques, as well as a qualification in audio software. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by as it involves using MacBooks to make your own music, arguably the future of dance/trance music. Education, qualifications and words of that sort could potentially put some people off, but one

thing is for sure, if you register on the programme the PULSE team won’t force anything on you. Making music, promoting gigs and events and being part of a team is what we are all about. If it helps you learn new skills, gain qualifications, progress to further training or employment, what’s not to like? We also run residential trips away to help everyone get to know each other a little better while also having fun. Well there you have it, and no costs involved! Yes, all this for free!! If you or someone you know would like to get involved then do not hesitate to get in touch ASAP as places are limited. Provided you are not in education, employment or training the PULSE team would like to invite you to join the jam! Clive began his career with Coca-Cola in 2007, having graduated from the Coca-Cola Sales Academy before progressing to his current role of Market Developer. Speaking of his awards success, Clive exclaimed, “I’m proud and honoured to win this award, especially knowing how many excellent sales people

we have throughout the country. It’s great that as a company Coca-Cola takes time to celebrate the successes of what hard work and effort bring. It’s especially pleasing to win this award on behalf of the Northern Irish team, which hasn’t been achieved since 2008. I must also pay tribute to the many great customers my colleagues and I have the pleasure of working with every day. There’s never been a more exciting time to be part of the Grocery trade in Northern Ireland.” Coca-Cola HBC Ireland, which holds these awards on an annual basis, invests heavily in the training and development of its people and believes in recognising and rewarding the efforts of exceptional performers. Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats Every mont, the Herald speaks to a local son or daughter, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond where they grew up we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for home and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of writer, Caroline Doherty de Novoa. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I first left Strabane in 1997 to move to Manchester for Uni. Since then I’ve lived in Oxford, Madrid, London and now Bogotá. What’s it like for a Strabane man/ woman where you are now? Bogotá is an exciting place to be right now. There’s a really thriving cultural scene in the city. I’m also lucky to have made some great friends here from all over the world. The ex-pat community is diverse but also close knit. Bogotá is not the easiest place to adjust to at first. The ex-pats you meet here tend to be very friendly and willing to help each other because we all remember how difficult it was when we first got here.

A great memory of Strabane? Band nights and quiz nights in Diceys when I was living there. Since I’ve left, Christmas nights out are special as I always end up running into people I’ve not seen in years and having a brilliant time catching up. And the memory of my husband’s face the first time I took him out in Strabane in December and he saw so many people in T-shirts and short skirts in sub-zero temperatures is just priceless. I guess we are just made of tough stuff! Something you miss about Strabane?

I miss curry chips, wheaten bread and Tayto crisps. I miss long summer nights where it is light until nearly midnight. In Bogotá it gets dark at 6pm all year long, which I think is kinda depressing. I miss Where did you grow up? driving in Strabane, it’s so stress free Burndennett. In the countryside compared to Bogotá. I miss people about six miles out of the Strabane saying hello on the street even when town centre. they don’t know you.

Something Strabane has that your new home doesn’t have? Proper pubs. Like most cities Bogotá has lots of “Irish” pubs. But unlike other places where the Irish pubs have Irish staff, in Bogotá I’m sometimes the only Irish person on the premises, the food isn’t authentic and they don’t even sell Guinness. There’s one supposedly Irish pub here that has zebras and tigers adorning the walls, which makes no sense to me at all!

that feeling always passes. So my advice would be, if you’ve gone to the effort of moving, stick it out and don’t give up without really giving it a shot. Usually after the first wave of homesickness or doubt things get a lot better. Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? I don’t think so. It’s great to still have a strong connection with the town and I love getting home for holidays but I have itchy fee. There’s a long list of places I’d like to live first before going back to Strabane.

What important factors do you think anyone thinking of moving abroad should consider? Almost every time I’ve moved I haven’t really planned it very well, so I’m not sure I’m the best person to advise people on what to do before making a move. I tend to just jump straight in with great optimism. Every time I’ve changed city I’ve initially been swept away by the adventure and novelty of it all. Then, about three months in, I hit a wall and start to really miss the place I just left. But

Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future? I’d love to see a film version of my novel Dancing with Statues be recorded on location in Strabane! One of the best things about Strabane? It’s compact! It can sometimes take nearly three hours to get from one side of Bogotá to another, without

Caroline Doherty de Novoa.

ever leaving the city. So I love that in Strabane everything is handy. I also love the fact that within a matter of minutes you can go from the town centre out into some really beautiful countryside, and in less than an hour you can see the Ocean. Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane? My dog is currently living with my parents, so I look forward to walking him along the canal or around Murlough as soon as I get back. I suppose that’s the same as being reunited with a loved one isn’t it?

Finbar Furey to play the Forum Finbar Furey has left his mark on the music of Ireland for more than four decades. As the lead singer, banjo and uillean pipes player for The Fureys, a group he shared with his brothers Eddie, Paul and George he helped to guide the evolution of Ireland’s traditional

music. Since leaving the band to pursue a solo career in 1995, Furey has continued to attract attention with his gutsy approach to the music of the Emerald Isle. Finbar Furey appears at the Millennium Forum Saturday 10th May 8pm.

Avenue Q - Award Winning Musical Avenue Q is a laugh out loud musical that tells the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment on Avenue Q. Here Princeton finally discovers his true purpose in life.Winner of the Tony ‘Triple Crown’ for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q is part flesh, part felt and packed

with laughs. Suitable for audiences 14+ Avenue Q plays at the Millennium Forum from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th May Friday: 8pm Saturday: 5pm & 8pm Sunday: 8pm. Tickets: Matinee: £30.00 Weekend: £12.50, £18.50, £22.50 & £26.50

World Premiere of the Little Mermaid at The Millennium Forum Join Ballet Theatre UK for this new production of the dramatic re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s all-time favourite story of The Little Mermaid, who falls in love with a human Prince and gives up everything to win his love. The kind hearted Little Mermaid rescues the Prince during a storm at sea, and begins a journey that takes her far from her home beneath the waves. Determined to pursue her love on to the shore she makes a bargain with an evil Sea Witch, but it comes at a heavy price. Ballet Theatre UK’s charming and poignant ballet explores the nature of longing, how making choices have lasting consequences and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways.

The Little Mermaid performs at the Millennium Forum on Friday 9th May. Tickets are available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum.co.uk for bookings. “Glittering costumes, expressive dancers...a pleasure to witness a production of this calibre”

Tonight’s The Night The Rod Stewart Musical Tonight’s The Night, the smash hit musical comedy inspired by the songs of Rod Stewart will perform in the Millennium Forum in Derry on 12th – 17th May. The all-singing, all-dancing, feel-good show premiered in the West End in 2003 and went on to play sold-out theatres across the UK. With a book by multi award-winning writer and comedian Ben Elton (We Will Rock You), Tonight’s The Night features spectacular staging, a world class band, dazzling choreography and includes over 20 classic Rod Stewart hits like Tonight’s the Night, Hot Legs, Baby Jane, Do Ya Think I’m Sexy, Maggie May, This Old Heart of Mine, I Don’t Wanna Talk About It, Ooh La La, Some Guys Have All the Luck, Forever Young, Sailing and many more!

12th-17th MAY Box Office: 71 264455 www.millenniumforum.co.uk

Rod Stewart is a two time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, a Grammy Living Legend®, and in 2007 he was bestowed the prestigious CBE. In a career spanning five decades that has seen over 200 million worldwide record sales, Brit and Grammy Award-winning Rod is still as popular as ever with an acclaimed new chart-topping album Time, a 2013 sell-out arena tour and the No 1 Bestseller ‘Rod – The Autobiography’. Rod Stewart said: “In the past, any ideas for musicals revolving around my songs just didn’t work for me. It was only when we were approached to do ‘Tonight’s The Night’ that the idea really took

off. I’m absolutely thrilled that this great show is touring the UK again.” Says Ben Elton: “Rod is such a totally unique artist. I initially approached him about a musical because his songs are all about storytelling and I felt that a great story could grow from them.” Set on the mean streets of Detroit and in the glamorous clubs of uptown LA, the show tells the story of Stu, a shy young man, so tongue tied that he cannot find the courage to declare his love to the girl of his dreams. How different he is to his hero, that legendary rock n’ roll vagabond Rod Stewart! One night our hero strikes a deal with the Devil, trading his soul for Rod’s. It seems like a good idea at the time but he’s is about to find out the hard way that you can’t find true love using another man’s moves and that devil or no devil, there’s only one Rod Stewart! The show will star Ben Heathcote (Mamma Mia!, Three Musketeers) as Stuart, Jenna Lee-James (We Will Rock You, Joseph) as Mary, Tiffany Graves (We Will Rock You, Sweet Charity) reprising her role as Satan/Baby Jane and Andy Rees (Legally Blonde, A Chorus Line) as Rocky. The rest of the company comprises Michelle Antrobus, Joshua Dever, Amy Diamond, Rosie Fletcher, Rosie Heath, Sinead Long, Tom Millen, Darryl Paul, Ricky Rojas, Spin and Lindsey Tierney. ‘Top show. Top songs. Top bloke. Rod still rocks! Heart FM ‘Did I think it was sexy? You bet!’Daily Mirror ‘Miss it at your peril’ Mail on Sunday

PAUL GALLAGHER

COMMUNITY CANDIDATE FOR CHANGE We the people of the Strabane must stand together shoulder to shoulder, whether it's in the workplace, on the streets but also in the Council Chamber. We must elect opposition to the status quo at every opportunity we get. We must ensure that the frontline services in our local areas, the very lifeblood of our communities are protected from the savage cuts being currently implemented by the current parties. I Paul Gallagher will actively engage with other independents, the trade unions and broad left parties that have broadly similar aims and aspirations. I will raise the profile of Strabane and engage extensively in community activism. Paul Gallagher with Election Agent Teresa Stewart

The Political process and the Community Sector need to be working hand in hand. For too long and too often this has been disjointed to the detriment of our local communities. At present locally Elected Representatives are not on the ground to witness what the needs of the people in our communities are. Deprivation level in Strabane Town is rife. Were it not for the work that I do constantly within the Community Sector, Strabane people would be a lot worse off.

• Target areas most in need with resources and finances to Strabane Areas on the basis of need and deprivation. • Communicate information made available to Councillors, out of council and into the public domain. • Continue to work at grass root level as community activists with other Independents, community workers & volunteers, fighting cut backs, tackling deprivation & unemployment, lobbying for the provision of an acceptable standard of social housing. • Assist with the empowerment of local people and communities to rise above the legacy of over 30 years of conflict and social isolation. • Use 20 years of my experience to provide a framework within which Council, departments, statutory bodies and other relevant agencies and sectors can work together to develop and implement a shared vision for promoting the well-being of the Strabane area based on effective engagement with the community.

Allstate Strabane Part of the Community Allstate NI has locations in Belfast, Derry and Strabane, employing over 2,200 people in Northern Ireland. The Strabane office provides a range of business support services such as technical support and insurance policy processing, 24/7, 365 days a year, providing a first class customer service.

And the award goes to ... Allstate Strabane retained their title as ‘Employer of the Year’ at the prestigious Strabane Business Awards. Allstate was described as ‘ ... a company embracing a philosophy which promotes a lifestyle and not just a job. Allstate’s success is down to its people and an innovative environment where employees are empowered to drive the business forward.’ The award was a great accolade for the Strabane site and a direct result of consistent focus on our people strategies: Training and Development; Employee Health and Wellbeing, Employee Engagement, Reward and Recognition. The Strabane office also received the Gold Accessibility Award as part of the Change a Little Change a Lot Campaign, demonstrating it’s commitment to disability awareness and accessibility. Allstate NI currently hold Investors in People Gold standard. Gold is a significant achievement given that, across the UK, less than 1% of organisations recognised under IiP have been successful at this level. “Gold represents achievement of world class best practice. It shows a truly cutting-edge organisation, operating at the very highest levels of people management practice using Investors in People to drive the business forward” Investors in People.

Allstate Northern Ireland is one of the largest employers in Strabane, currently employing over 500 people at the Orchard Road site. This 2 year programme has been developed in conjunction with Microsoft and local employers and provides participants with the opportunity to achieve a number of accredited qualifications. Cancer Focus Northern Ireland during “Movember” by growing beards and moustaches. And to end the year, all staff raised a massive £2000 for the disaster relief efforts in the Philippines which saw such devastation in November. The final total for 2013 was over £8000 and the Committee is looking forwarding to bettering that total in 2014. Fundraising efforts show no signs of slowing down with regular raffles held on-site and a sponsored Fire Walk is planned for July.

Our People… Allstate NI’s Health & Well-Being Strategy covers 4 key areas: Your Money, Your Community, Your Health & Your Benefits. Each year, we run a series of well-being weeks on-site which include a wide range of activities to promote well-being and raise awareness of health issues such as: Healthy Eating Information sessions, Male & Female Cancer awareness sessions, Financial Review clinics and pamper events, with complimentary fruit and healthy snacks also available in the Canteen.

No Smoking Day campaign In March/April 2014, a Getting on Well programme was held on-site in conjunction with Foyle Health@Work, which comprised of 4 sessions focusing of different elements of well-being: Food & Your Mood, Cholesterol & Blood Pressure Control, Fruit, Veg & Sugars and Blood Pressure Control. We currently partner with South West College and have several employees completing a Higher Level ICT Apprenticeship.

Gemma McKelvey placing calls to our premium paying customers. The Training Department at Allstate Strabane has been extremely busy delivering new and existing development programs to employees. Some of the major new projects rolled in the last two quarters are: Knowledge Centred Support (KCS) - a major new methodology rolled to all staff from call takers to the senior management team. This took 6 months of planning and delivery, training 40+ classes with all frontline facing training created in-house and also implemented by our partners in America and India. Positive Coach Program which has been developed in house for all employees and rolled to 36 staff that hold coaching responsibilities, complements the KCS roll out. We have also delivered extensively on our existing training portfolio: New hire induction, Energy for Life, cross skilling and Lead to Succeed. Five members of the training team have successfully achieved CIPD qualifications in Learning & Development which supports our mission to be a best practice team in our field.

It’s not all work… For years now Allstate Strabane and its employees have gone above and beyond in their efforts to make a difference in the local community. Local highlights from the previous 12 months include a Take Me Out event which raised over £400 for the Huntington’s Disease Association of NI; the first ever Allstate “Football Blitz” tournament in aid of the Strabane branch of Special Olympics; and a music night that helped raise £500 for local institution The Koram Centre. As the year drew to a close employees’ generosity didn’t waver as they raised £600 at Halloween for local nursing home Woodmount Manor. In November our male employees let their inhibitions go and raised £600 for

• Acknowledge and deal with the past; • Build positive relationships by addressing issues of mistrust, prejudice and intolerance amongst ex-prisoners/ex-combatants, whilst promoting anti-sectarianism and peace nd reconciliation; • Develop a vision of a shared, interdependent and fair society. • Embrace social and political change for republican socialist not in the mainstream. • Develop a series of activities around Truth Recovery (including a consideration of legacy of the conflict issues) both within the Teach na Failte constituency and on an inter-community basis. • Develop a rapid response for emergency and ongoing situations where there is a risk of destabilisation of existing good relations or potential danger to the peace process

The Teach na Failte programme is developing a paradigm for peace-building that is rooted in the lived experience of political ex-prisoners/ ex combatants and that can take existing work to a new level of cross-constituency/community shared learning. It recognizes the need to deepen the range of involvement and participation by attracting new participants and developing extended community/societal relationships. The overall aim of the Teach Na Failte programme is;

to increase the re-integration of politically motivated ex-prisoners/combatants into society on a regional basis, while recognising the fact that the IRSP/INLA constituencies still face different opportunities and challenges. The project will clearly focus on peace and reconciliation, promoting cross community interaction developing the capacity of TnaF while addressing issues relating to the legacy of the past – particularly in the context where there has been no agreement as to how to deal with the issues that exists.

TnaF will use their political credibility of being a political ex-prisoner/excombatant group to work with other activists within their constituency to achieve effective opportunities and activities to enable individuals within their constituency to both examine their own beliefs and to meet with ex-prisoners and

ex-combatants from other organisations. The project will aim to make a positive contribution as to how potentially divisive issues such as the commemoration of forthcoming centenaries can be handled in an inclusive manner and modeling cross-community contact that can address difficult and divisive issues.

• Contribution to cross-Border understanding of peace building, reconciliation and the impact of the conflict. • To identify through locally-based Teach na Failte groups in the North West on divisive symbols and emblems in their respective area and to engage in mentored discussion to produce Action Plans to address tensions. • To design and implement programmes of work with young people focusing on tolerance, inter-community understanding and diversity • Support for individual ex-prisoners to gain relevant qualifications, employment opportunities, advice and support • To enhance and encourage participation of women in peace building and conflict transformation drawing off the experience of community-based women during the period of conflict, and emergence from violence. • Partnership Working and Building

Teach na Failte works in partnership with the From Prison To Peace and is supported through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation.

Alistair Bids to Keep ‘Emerald Guitars’ in the Hills of Donegal A Donegal guitar manufacturing business has kick-started a funding campaign in order to keep their business where it presently operates. For the past 15 years Emerald Guitars have been building some of the world’s most innovative guitars in their factory workshop in Cavanacaw, St Johnston. The scenic setting has been the background to the construction of a succession of striking and beautiful guitars, many of which have been showcased in major stadiums and arenas across the globe. American guitar legend Steve Vai’s iconic ‘Ultra Zone’ guitar, which he used on his 2013 tour, was built at the Emerald Guitars workshop, as was the famous ‘Bahamut Dragon’ guitar, which has become iconic throughout Asia, having been built for guitarist Leehom Wang, who is the biggest selling artist in the continent. The man behind the guitars is Alistair Hay and the factory property has been in his family for 35 years and was where his family business, Kestrel toys, was established. Unfortunately during the worldwide financial crises in 2008 the Kestrel Company got into difficulty and was forced into closure. “Since that time I made the decision to put my full focus on Emerald Guitars, which

Page 4 September 2013 The Herald

is my passion as much as my business, and build a business that could support this great building and carry on the legacy that my father started all those years ago,” Alistair explains. “Unfortunately while I retained the building I also retained substantial debts that have been a major drain on Emerald Guitars and hampering our growth but now we have been given a great opportunity and we need your help to keep us right here. We have been negotiating with our banks and we have been offered a major restructure of the debts but need to find a lump sum in order to meet their criteria.” Emerald Guitars’ goal is to raise $75,000 (they are working in USD as most of their customer base is in USA). “This will allow us to accept the current offer from our lenders and secure the future of our building,” explains Alistair. “It’s important to note that the future of Emerald Guitars is not in jeopardy as our business is going strong but this will help us continue our growth in this location rather than some faceless industrial area.” That such innovative and world famous craftsmanship takes place overlooking the border is something Alistair clearly takes great pride in. “Perhaps it’s our location out here in the country side that makes the difference. Everyone has heard of the friendly Irish spirit and out here in

Sweeno McGinty’s

the country we are a friendly lot where everyone knows each other and looks out for each other. Most factories are set in industrial areas surrounded by other factories and the noises of machines and traffic. Here it’s different,” he stresses.

Guitars! So what do you get for your help in keeping a local business that sees its produce grace the stadiums of the world local? “The rewards will be guitars,” says Alistair. “In order to fund this we want to build more guitars and continue doing what we do best. You can select a price level that you are comfortable with and this gets you a discounted voucher to use towards purchasing a guitar of your choice. The guitars would then be built next year. Consider it like buying shares in Emerald Guitars that we buy back next year by giving you a great guitar built specifically for you by myself and my team here in Donegal.” If anyone would like to find out more about the project before committing or would like to discuss a guitar build then feel free to email Alistair at info@emeraldguitars.com or call him directly on ++353 86 387196. For more information on the campaign check out www. indiegogo.com/projects/keep-emeraldguitars-in-the-irish-hills.

Au Revoir, Tina! ter Tina. Who wouldn’t?! How will he react when he finds out his da has been having all the fun? That wee man is one to watch. I’ve never trusted him!

After some of the most emotional scenes in the 54 year history of the soap, ‘Coronation Street’ is about to grip its viewers with a gritty ‘whodunnit’ plot. After six years on the famous cobbles, Michelle Keegan is bowing out as street-siren Tina McIntyre, with her final scenes set to be screened in May. There’s only two ways to leave a soap: via taxi or via hearse and it seems that Tina will be opting for the latter. As we know, no-one dies of natural causes in soapland and like poor Maxine Peacock before her, who unfortunately walked in on evil Richard Hillman tucking Emily in for a permanent nap, ‘Tina’ is set to meet a gruesome end at the hands of a Rovers Return regular. Naturally, it’ll be a few months before we find out who the culprit is but let us look at the prime suspects. Peter Barlow was having an on/off affair with Tina since before Christmas. She wanted him to leave new wife Carla. He refused. Tina then gave Peter an ultimatum before she fled Weatherfield but he chose Carla. She came back, hell bent on winning Peter back, the affair steamed up, with Tina wanting to tell Carla all the

sordid details so she can finally get Peter to herself. For Peter, there may be only one way to stop that. Carla Connor and Tina were pals, most people who are having affairs in soapland are best mates with the deceived other-half! Her love life has built up quite a body count already: Paul and Liam Connor and Tony Gordon. She’ll not want to lose another, even if he is a Barlow and a bigamist, and may do everything in her power to keep him. Tracey Barlow and Tina never got on. Tracey doesn’t get on with anyone and doesn’t need a motive for any of her actions. She has already done time for murder and don’t forget

that Tina snogged her boyfriend Rob behind her back. From when she was a baby, Tracey has always been an irritant and her ‘soap bitch’ shtick is surely knackered by now. She’s a suspect yes but a boring one by this stage. Rob Donovan is Carla’s brother and won’t be impressed to learn of Tina and Peter’s secret. He also kissed Tina at one point, which didn’t go down well with girlfriend, Tracey. As an over-protective brother to Carla also seeking forgiveness from Tracey, he may just be pushed to the limits. Well, more for the former than the latter you would hope! Simon Barlow adores his babysit-

It’s one of the Coen Brothers’ finest films and now ‘Fargo’ is set to hit the small screen as a television series. In 2012, it was announced that FX was developing a new television series based on the Academy Award-winning film with Joel and Ethan Coen on board as executive producers. It was later announced that the adaptation would be a 10-episode limited series. Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to star in the series, as has Martin Freeman, who recently appeared as ‘Bilbo Baggins’ in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of ‘The Hobbit’. Colin Hanks (you might know his da!) has been cast in the role of Duluth Police Deputy, Gus Grimly. Bob Odenkirk, who played lawyer Saul Goodman in ‘Breaking Bad’, will also appear as a police deputy.

Development of 46 family homes

In this television version, a drifter named Lorne Malvo (Thornton) arrives in smalltown Minnesota and influences the population with his malice and violence, including put-upon insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Freeman). The series, adapted by writer Noah Hawley, whose other credits include the TV series ‘Bones’, will feature a new case and new characters but promises to echo the “trademark humour” – and murder – of the original film, which also starred William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi. It is part of a burgeoning trend of films being adapted for television, including ‘Hannibal’, which starred Mads Mikkelsen as a pre-prison Hannibal Lecter, ‘Psycho’, which became ‘Bates Motel’, and Nick Hornby’s ‘About a Boy’. The 1996 film version of ‘Fargo’ won ‘Best Screenplay’ Oscars for the Coen Brothers and Frances McDormand won ‘Best Actress’ for her role as pregnant Minnesota police chief, Marge Olmstead-Gunderson. The film was noted for its snow-covered landscapes and genial characters, who despite an undercurrent of deceit and violence, remained courteous, reserved, and mild-mannered – a trait described as ‘Minnesota nice’. We can be certain that we’ll see a similar blend of the macabre and the mannerly in the television series. ‘Fargo’ premiered on April 15 on FX in the U.S and will air later this month on Channel 4.

‘11st lighter and on top of the world’ Before she joined Slimming World, Helen Scott found even short walks a struggle. Now she’s lost 11st 6½lbs, dropped nine dress sizes and is up for every challenge that comes her way. ‘I knew my eating was out of control, but didn’t know how to change. Growing up I didn’t have a real weight problem. I ate home-cooked, healthy meals and we did lots of walking. When I started Uni all I really thought about was food. I was the biggest of my friends and, although they did accept me for who I was, I still felt uncomfortable. Then one Christmas I came home for the holidays and I overheard my mum, my brother James and my sister Clare discussing my weight. I didn’t confront them, I just listened in, and it really upset me. They were clearly concerned. They didn’t understand, though, that I was beginning to accept that I was always going to be overweight. I had tried many diets before – they just didn’t work for me. The following August my boyfriend Richard and I visited Portrush and, as I got into one of the rides, the safety bar refused to lock. It took three men to push it over me and I just wanted to die. After that we moved in together and always ate takeaways rather than cooking for ourselves. We didn’t do any exercise and we drove everywhere. No wonder I got heavier. It was when my brother James said he was getting married, I confessed to my cousins

how worried I was about how I would look in the photos. I had looked into gastric-band surgery, but I didn’t really want to go down that route. Hannah told me about a friend who had lost over 6 Stones at Slimming World and said I should give it a go. I walked into my local Slimming World group, convinced it wouldn’t work, but when my Consultant started explaining how much food we could eat, something clicked. I can do this!! In my 1st week I lost 7 lbs. I went home and started cooking Slimming World recipes straight away. Richard thought it was great because we were still eating loads and we both started losing weight straightaway. I then started doing workout DVDs and it made me want to start exercising more. My dad is a keen runner and when I mentioned to him that I’d like to start, he was very encouraging. On my first go I could only run a few metres before I was out of breath, so I walked for a bit and started again. Gradually, my fitness levels increased and the weight dropped off even faster. By the time of James’s wedding, I had lost 6Stones and when my family saw me, several of them cried. My confidence has soared. I used to walk around

Helen Scott who lost an astonishing 11st 6.5lbs on Slimmingworld.

with my head down, imagining people thinking, ‘She’s so lazy and unhealthy.’ Now, I walk with my head held high. It’s made a difference to my working life, too – I’m more approachable and I got a promotion. When we took a family

holiday to Turkey, I felt so good lying by the pool in my swimming costume and I now have lots of new, colourful dresses in my wardrobe. I love going to group every week and the encouragement I get is fantasticfrom recipes to swapping tips,to helping each other through challenging times. I have met many lovely friends and I have continued to lose weight.I have now lost over 11 Stones and my life couldn’t be more different. I tuck into loads of fruit, fat-free yogurts, soups, filling salads and pasta dishes during the day, and when I get home, I go to the gym or go for a run before eating one of the meals I’ve batch-cooked over the weekend – often chicken curry or Lasagne.I can still even enjoy glasses of wine and Richard enjoys a beer. I’m going to be a bridesmaid at my sister’s wedding soon. Buying clothes for special occasions used to end in tears – not any more. Now I love trying them on..... and wearing them! Sinead Twells,Slimming World Consultant in the local SionMills group, says, ‘Helen has done really well. She has really inspired lots of members with her amazing story. Our generous eating plan makes slimming easier than you ever thought possible! Drama Festival a “Roaring” Success

The 2014 Strabane Drama Festival concluded with Carnmore/Claregalway’s Compántas Lir and the Leixlip-based Brádan Players scooping the major awards. It also proved to be a successful festival for Letterkenny Music and Drama Group, bringing home three awards for their well received presentation of Martin Lynch’s ‘The Chronicles of Long Kesh’. Pomeroy Players were unfortunate runners-up in the Best Confined Play section for their presentation of Marina Carr’s ‘Portia Coughlan’, however, Plunkett Nugent won Best Actor (Confined) for his portrayal of part-time barman, part-time ladies man, full-time cowboy, ‘Sly Scully’. Brádan Players’ epic presentation of Edward Albee’s ‘Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf’ claimed Best Open Play, The Perpetual Award, Best Actor (Open) for George Hogan as ‘George’ and Best Actress (Open) for Helena Stout as ‘Martha’ – a worthy double for the roaring couple at the centre of the play. They also claimed Best Stage Setting and Best Director went to Jenny Ní Lúcáis, rounding off a successful performance in Strabane of what is surely a most exhausting of productions. Meanwhile Compántas Lir’s presentation of Patricia Burke Brogan’s ‘Eclipsed’, a powerful play shining a light on the scandal of the Magdalene laundries, claimed Best Confined Play, Best Character Portrayal for Liz Hession as ‘Mother Victoria’ and Stella Fleming was awarded Best Actress (Confined). The Alley was a packed house on the Thursday night of the festival when Letterkenny Music and Drama Group treaded the boards, so it seemed almost inevitable that their presentation of Martin Lynch’s ‘The Chronicles of Long Kesh’ would romp home with the Audience Award and it did just that. The production also claimed the Adjudicator’s Award and Best Supporting Actress for Elaine Gillespie as ‘Thumper and Others’. The Best Decor Award went to Ballyshannon Drama Society’s presentation of Neil Simon’s ‘The Gingerbread Lady’ and Stephen Byrne claimed the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance as ‘Trip’ in Wexford Drama Group’s presentation of Jon Robin Baitz’s ‘Other Desert Cities’.

North Wexford’s Rasper Players and their presentation of Peter Hall’s adaption of George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’.

Brádan Players’ epic presentation of Edward Albee’s ‘Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf’.

Ballybofey’s Butt Drama Circle presenting ‘Parlour Song’ by Jez Butterworth.

The Holy Cross College Annual Spring Concert T

he annual Spring Concert was received by a packed hall at Holy Cross College just last week. It was a celebration of the music at the school and was attended by a large audience of proud parents and friends. The numerous acts included many of the GCSE and A level music students who are preparing for their upcoming exams. This was a great platform for them to showcase their talents and let their parents hear the wonderful progress they have made. There was a wide array of soloists and ensembles on the programme. This included the college orchestra who performed numbers by The Beatles and Elton John, the senior and junior choirs whose songs ranged from Bob Marley to Lady Gaga, and there was even an original composition by GCSE student Ibukun Hassan. The percussion ensemble, expertly led by WELB tutor Ronan McKee, dazzled the audience with a powerful performance of a modern piece called ‘Dimensions 5’. Cristiona O’Kane, a world class Irish dancer, added some variation to the evening by presenting a lively set on stage. The response from the audience was a clear indication of how successful the evening was and how much everyone enjoyed the performances from the talented students at Holy Cross College. The principal Mrs Maria Doherty said ‘the music at the college is going from strength to strength and I am so proud of the amazing talent and dedication shown by our students and staff tonight’.

The percussion group - Bradley O’Hagan, Emmet O’Neill and Eoghan Timoney.

Music teacher, Mrs Stewart, conducting the Holy Cross college orchestra. Grade 8 violinist, Aoife Duffy.

Lauren McGonagle gave a superb rendition of “Memory” from the musical “Cats”.

The Junior Choir, directed by Ms Strawbridge and Mr Devine, performed Fireflies by Owl City, and followed that with a Bob Marley medley.

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West.

Cahalen Morrison & Eli West are, simply put, two of the most innovative and subtle bluegrass musicians playing today. Cahalen writes songs that sound like a Cormac McCarthy novel – simple, beautifully crafted and seemingly formed from raw natural elements. Eli brings jagged, angular arrangements based in bluegrass and old-time, refracted through a modern lens. When they released their stunning debut album, The Holy Coming of The Storm it met with instantaneous reaction on both sides of the Atlantic. They created such an impact during their first ever UK tour that Celtic Connections festival gave them a show of their own in Glasgow and they then appeared at just about every major outdoor event thereafter. Bob Harris invited them to record a session for his BBC Radio 2 show, saying their music was “quite extraordinary”, and Mary Ann Kennedy recorded a studio session with them for BBC Radio 3’s World on 3 as well. Admired by their peers as much as by those who love great roots music, Cahalen and Eli count many recognised names among those who sing their praises. When The Times invited Chris Wood to name his Six of The Best Folk Acts, he singled them out saying they were “passionate, committed, accomplished, searching and sailing in the sea of their own inheritance” The duo are back on this side of the Atlantic promoting their stunning new album, this time produced by Tim O’Brien, himself a fan who says they “make music the world needs!”

Popular local singer Kathy O’Hara marks Holy “This is quite extraordinary” Week with a concert at The Balor. Along with special guests Richard Gilpin and – Bob Harris BBC Radio 2

Who’s Up For a Picnic? The first batch of names to play at this year’s Electric Picnic festival have been announced and as usual it’s a grand case of something old, something new, something borrowed. Soon to be seen on the big screen as Jimi Hendrix in the first full biopic of the guitar hero, André 3000 will return to his day job this summer as part of hip-hop duo OutKast alongside fellow rapper Big Boi. They will be joined on the Picnic bill by Beck, Portishead, London Grammar, Foals and St Vincent, who impressed greatly at last year’s festival, playing alongside David Byrne. It will also be a delight to see Beck return to these shores, especially after releasing his latest album ‘Morning Phase’, which is the best thing he’s done in years – a beautiful record. It has also been quite some time since Portishead played an Irish date and their placing even ahead of OutKast as festival headliners shows how the trip-hop tastes of the 30-plus bracket have not diminished with time. Nile Rogers and Chic are also on the bill, although surely everyone in the country has seen them by this stage. The ‘Hitmaker’ himself must have an Irish passport now he’s here that often. Still, Chic always deliver a great show and will have you dancing from start

to finish. Indeed, the Electric Picnic always has a heavy dose of nostalgia and this year will be no different. Scottish rockers Simple Minds (yes they’re still going!) will bring some eighties stadium posturing to the festival and not all of it will be completely cheesy. In fact, the Picnic could be the ideal venue for Simple Minds to delve into their more electro-based albums such as ‘Reel to Real Cacophony’, ‘Empires and Dance’ and ‘Sons and Fascination’. As for electro-pop, Pet Shop Boys are no strangers to the Picnic, having played there in 2006 and a very impressive show it was too. This year will be an opportunity to play their new tune based around Irish Drag Artist Panti’s anti-homophobia speech. The nostalgia continues with the addition of acts such as The Blades, The Stranglers and nineties shoegazers Slowdive to the bill. There’s not really much to chew on for the 20-year-old hipsters or the buckfast supping ‘selfie’ snappers, which will appeal to many. That’s not to say it’s an old school club this year, far from it. There will be loads of fresh

From Left, Beck, Nile Rodgers and Paulo Nutini, some of the headliners at Electric Picnic this Summer.

contemporary sounds in the shape of exciting London electro-funk duo, Jungle and Birmingham soul queen in the making, Laura Mvula and plenty more to be announced, including perhaps some local names from our little corner of the country. The convoluted yet money-saving ticket prices also continue this year, with the cheapest weekend ticket set at €154.50, and the most expensive at a rather eye-popping €229.50, which is just €20 less than a ticket

to Glastonbury. The Body & Soul area line-up won’t be out until mid July. Stradbally Hall, Laois will the venue as ever this year, with the festival running from Friday, August 29 to Sunday, August 31. Electric Picnic has definitely established itself as a truly unique Irish festival, set amid the rolling lawns on the beautiful 600 acre estate just fifty minutes from Dublin. Great music, art, theatre, comedy, pantomime, food and holistic health...and a little bit of magic...hey ya!

Cool Discs to host ‘Record Store Day’ this weekend! Record Store Day, the annual celebration of independent music shops, will take place this Saturday, April 19. As ever, the only independent record store in the North West, Cool Discs, which can be found on Foyle Street, Derry will be participating and store owner, Lee Mason, is optimistic that it’s going to be the best Record Store Day yet. As with previous years, there will be a feast of special limited edition vinyl treats available exclusively for the day in question, along with some special local releases. As with every other year, Cool Discs will also have some fantastic live entertainment in the store throughout the day. Among the special releases, David Bowie, who recently invited the whole of Scotland to stay with him and the wife at their crib in Manhattan, will be releasing a 7” picture disc

of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’. First released as a single in 1974, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’ celebrates its 40th anniversary on Record Store Day with the new release set to come backed with Bowie’s famous ‘Farewell Speech’, recorded at the final Ziggy Stardust concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1973. Earlier this year Public Enemy’s Chuck D was named as the official ambassador of Record Store Day 2014. Speaking about his appointment, he commented: “In this age where industry has threaded the music sound with virtual sight and story I am honoured to be called upon to be Record Store Day Ambassador of 2014. With the masses, neck bent into their smartphones, let all of us music lovers GPS our way into a reality that is the Record Store. It’s worth a great try, let’s do this.” Get yourself down to Cool Discs on April 19, it’s always a fantastic day with a few surprises along the way, and remember – a record store isn’t just for Record Store Day, they have a song for everyday!

Cool Discs in Derry’s Foyle Street will be hosting ‘Record Store Day 2014’ this Saturday 19th April.

Nik Kershaw Letterkenny-bound There seems to be a theme of nostalgia running through most of the music column this month so there’s no point changing now. Think of the 1980s. Think of mullets. Think state of the art videos that time has not been kind to. Think bizarre lyrics about a hole in the ground where ‘an Old man of Aran goes around and around’. Nik Kershaw was one of the biggest names in the UK charts in the early 1980s and there’s good news for those with fond memories of those days. The idol who donned many a bedroom wall 30 years ago is still going strong and on his way to Letterkenny. He plays a special one-man-show at An Grianán Theatre on Thursday, September 4. Expect all the top 20 hits such as ‘Wouldn’t It Be Good’, ‘I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’, ‘Wide Boy’ and ‘The Riddle’. Kershaw has also been a busy

collaborator. He played electric guitar on Elton John’s 1985 hit ‘Nikita’, worked with the Hollies and wrote Chesney Hawkes’ famous one hit wonder ‘The One And Only’, which topped the UK charts in 1991. Kershaw also performed at Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1985 as part of Live Aid, which was viewed by an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion. Can’t take that away from him! Tickets for the gig at An Grianán are €22 full price, €20 concession and are available at An Grianán box-office +353 74 91 20777. It promises to be a great night and who knows, he may even let us in on what exactly ‘The Riddle’ is all about!

The Chrysalis Cove MEDITATION Are you seeking calmness, peace of mind, joy, vibrant health, greater energy, positive relationships and fulfillment in your life? Do you wish to be stress free and worry free? You can enjoy all these benefits and much more with meditation. Meditation offers innumerable benefits for your body, mind and soul.

Benefits of Meditation • Lowers high blood pressure significantly. • Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks. • Eliminates or greatly reduces worry and stress. • Decreases any tension related pain such as tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems. • Increases serotonin production, this improves mood and behavior. • Improves the immune system. • Helps with life balance and helps the mind refocus.

SEVEN KEYS TO MEDITATION Sacred Space

feed the physical body several times a day at certain times, meditation nourishes your inner life. So set at least one special time each day for your meditative practice. The best time to meditate, I believe, is early in the morning. Maybe before the kids get up for school or before you get ready for work. Meditating early morning means that the peace and calmness you get from your meditation practice will permeate the rest of your day and you’ll be surprised how effective it is. Your life and its stresses and strains may remain the same but how you deal with them positively changes. Your friend, family and work colleagues will notice the difference. Many people like to meditate when they get home from work to sooth the stress of their day and also meditating last thing at night will help you sleep more soundly.

The Power of Music

Music is often referred to as ‘The Language of the Soul’. Peaceful music will create a meditative atmosphere and it will, without a doubt, enhance Usui Reiki the quality of your meditation in the beginning. Master/Teacher Play it softly during your quiet time. Merely listening and absorbing the music will help you feel the inner stillness of meditation. long as you are relaxed and comfortable. A comfortable chair or cushion on the floor is best. It will also help, especially guided meditation, to The important thing is to be still, relaxed and with quieten your mind of constant thought. practice, the more you will become the observer of your thoughts, letting them pop up but letting them go with no stress or strain…..Again as you progress in your meditation practice you may prefer silence (no music or sound) just listening to the sounds within and around you,

You In the end the most important ingredient is you and your choice to have a meditation practice as part of your daily life. It is you who experiences, who makes choices; you are both a student and a teacher of your own inner world. Make a choice today to try meditation and see what happens. It could and most likely will completely change your life in positive and beneficial ways. Anyone interested in learning the tools and techniques of meditation in a group setting initially? Then I have started fortnightly ‘Art of Meditation’ Evenings for beginners. I will teach breathing techniques and those who attend will avail of beautiful guided meditations accompanied by soulful music. The next evening is scheduled for Tuesday 29th April, £10 per person.

When we are worried or anxious we tend to shallow breathe from the chest area, minimizing the air getting to our lungs and thus creating even more discomfort.

Are you feeling stressed, depressed, anxious or worried? Why not try... On-going fortnightly evenings for those wishing to learn the tools

Next Evening: Tuesday 29th April 7pm to 9pm • £10 (All details on IET and Reiki Workshops 2014 see website!) to make it as inspiring as possible. For example, Cover a low table with a clean, light cloth. Place a candle nearby and fresh flowers if possible (helpful but not necessary) Incense is always beneficial when meditating Together these items will create a meditative atmosphere

Prepare Physically Having a shower before meditation has a soothing effect, washing hands and face is also beneficial. Wear clean, light and loose fitting clothing if possible (again beneficial but not essential). Remove shoes before meditating, your feet deserve a break too!

Posture

Time is of the Essence In the beginning when you embark on a daily meditation practice, 5 minutes a few times a day is enough. Meditation is like an inner muscle, it can become sore. If you meditate for more than 5 minutes and feel tension in your head or get a headache, you’ve gone beyond your capacity. Let go of expectations of what should be and follow what your body is telling you. Your body is very wise and it will tell you through physical feelings or symptoms if you’re stretched too far. Just steadily and soulfully practice and make yourself alert to the messages that will begin to arrive from within.

Choosing the Right Time

Sit relaxed and straight, if possible. There is no Make an appointment with yourself and practice need to sit in a special yogic posture to meditate, as stillness at the same time every day. Just as you

I want to take this time to give you all a little insight into the background and wonders of Lucy Annabella Organics. Which is 100% Irish owned, created, blended and bottled in Co Tyrone. The beautiful name Lucy Annabella originated from founder, Colleen Harte. Lucy Annabella was Colleen’s grandfather’s fond pet name for her. ‘Lucy Annabella’ has sentimental attachment and it sits close to Colleen’s heart therefore it was the perfect name for her company when she took the leap to share her little pots of magic with the world. Colleen was inspired to create Lucy Annabella Organics when she realised that ‘being organic’ is as much about what we put on our body as what we put into it. Lucy Annabella essential and vegetable oils are carefully sourced around the globe and brought back to Ireland where they are crafted into beautiful organic cosmetics and fragrance products. The sourcing and production methods have won Lucy Annabella accreditation with the soil association and the aromatherapy trade council and result in the most luxurious organic skincare cosmetics.

‘Old Ballycolman’ Recalled and Reconnecting A new Facebook group page focusing on “Old Ballycolman” has generated huge interest among former and current residents of the area, with many helping to contribute to the page, adding old photos of days gone by and sparking precious memories. The idea for the page came about around Christmas last year, as former-resident Eamonn ‘Sticks’ Doherty was talking with friends recalling past stories, the changes and whereabouts of past residents.

with each other. “Old memories are talked about steadily with great photos being posted. Old friends are getting back in touch after years and some are learning more about the area since they’ve left than when they lived in this great place. Great characters have passed, such as Mickey Doherty, Hank Rouse, Albert McNally, Willie Ferry, Claude Robinson, Paddy Ramsey and Maurice Brolly to name a few and to this day some of the older residents have remained such as Brendan Gallagher, Eilish McCrossan, the McFeeters, McGarrigle and McCready families,” said Eamonn.

“I decided to set up a page on Facebook called ‘Folks of the Old Ballycolman’ for the purpose of posting old photos, stories or reconnecting with those that had lost touch. Initially thinking a few dozen would post to it, the mutual interest has spiralled with membership in the hundreds. It’s been a talking point within the town and on social media and growing rapidly,” explained Eamonn. Also on the Facebook page old landmarks have been recalled and reminisced on, such as ‘BootOld Ballycolman (seanbhaile cholmain) was sy’s field’, ‘The Humps’ ‘John Kelly’s Shop’, a term used for houses built from the 1950’s ‘The Lock Factory’, ‘the Garages’ and ‘Adria’. within the larger town land of Ballycolman, There has been a tireless contribution of knowlwhich itself dates back hundreds of years origi- edge from Eamonn and the other administrators nally in the parish of Urney(Urnai). How time flies. It seems such a short time ago that the clocks went back. Now they have gone forward and we are into the bright mornings once again. This time of the year brings out a great sense of opportunity in me for some reason. The flowers, grasses and trees have been storing potential energy all winter long and are unable to hold on any longer. We can see the buds in the trees, the daffodils in full bloom and the lawns needing cut. Everything seems to have gathered pace. We too tend to feel better at this time of year. There can be a great sense of hope in the air. After a long dark winter we can see the light once again. We can hope for a wonderful summer like last year. Things tend to look better in the light. Everything moves towards the light and we are no different. It reminds me of old tales from my youth when people said that horses perform better with the sun on their back. Perhaps we do as well. Maybe the heat and warmth of times to come are just what is needed to kick start our potential energy and get us going. We are entering a busy season. It is time to clear out all the dead stuff in our gardens and allow new shoots room to manoeuvre and pleasure us with their beauty. Shortly the smell of new mown grass and the sounds of lawnmowers will fill the air. It is amazing how these annual events renew our trust in the world. Whatever happened during the dark winter is long gone and we are entering a spring where new life is all around us. Lambs are frolicking in the fields and the early morning chorus of the birds is

Nature has a wonderful mysterious way of re-vitalising us in the most incredible way possible, it gives us a beautiful energy boost after a long cold dark winter.

ever more evident. Sometimes we ask ourselves ‘How do they know’? Well Mother Nature has taught them well and every year at this time they just know and do what they have to do. Let us now take this time too to renew ourselves. Let us get out there to meet and greet this abundance of life everywhere. This is a wonderful time to nurture your sense of awe at the beauty of nature. Nature calms us, soothes us and gives us hope. Look at a spring flower in full bloom and realise that even with all our technology and all the scientific advances of the world we could not create such a thing; so delicate yet so strong.

Nature continues whatever happens, and this is our hope. This is our realisation that whatever is going on with us at the moment, nature will soothe and ‘This too shall pass’. Nature always forgives so maybe it is time for us to let go of the past and allow the potential energy in each of us to be released and allow us to bloom again and start living life to the full. Remember, ‘The beauty about the past is, its over’. So let’s get going now as today is the first day of the rest of your life and a great time to start living again. Until the next time. Tom Herron

Strabane Athletic FC Notes Intermediate League

SAFC 2014 YOUTH DETAILS

Club Dinner Dance

Dungiven Celtic 1 Strabane Athletic 2

The club have now got teams competing at youth level in the following age groups: U15, U13 & U11- Fermanagh and Western Brendan Keogh Youth League and U13 & U11 - Derry & District Youth League

The date for this year's annual Club Dinner Dance is Saturday 14th June. The music will be provided by the fabulous Pontius Pilates. Keep this date free and further details will be posted later.

Strabane Athletic left it late but did enough to secure the points in a difficult fixture away to Dungiven Celtic. In a first half which they dominated Athletic had several chances but the goals are not flowing as freely as they were earlier in the season and the result could have gone either way. Aidan Cairns Friel was through early on but wasn't able to convert and Sean Ferry was out of luck a few minutes later. The home side playing with a strong breeze weren't troubling Ruairi Winters in Athletic's goal, their only effort going high and wide, Strabane produced their best move on the half hour mark, a fine build up involving Aodhan Doherty and Gerard Donaghey ended with Jason Mc Grinder's shot being pushed around the post by the home keeper. The Athletic defence was looking solid but on the stroke of half time a high ball caught by the wind deceived them allowing the home centre forward to draw a superb stop from Winters but the striker made no mistake from the rebound. It was against the run of play but it left Strabane with an uphill battle in the second half. The local side were quick out of the blocks in the second period. Cairns had a good effort saved and a minute later Joe Breslin was well positioned in the penalty area to restore parity. Athletic nearly took the lead just after but Jason McGrinder headed over and the same player was foiled by a fine tackle a few minutes later. Gerard Donaghey sent over a cross which rattled

the Dungiven crossbar and 'Kimble" Kelly found Richie Graham whose shot was blocked. As the half progressed Athletic continued to create most of the chances but the second goal would not come and this was causing frustration. With five minutes to go Strabane striker Jason McGrinder was red carded for reacting to a challenge. This seemed to signal the end of Athletic's chances of winning the game but there was a final twist when after great play on the wing by Gerard Donaghey, he found Sean Ferry who finished from close range to send the visitors home with the points. Strabane's fate in the Intermediate league is in their own hands but with fixtures against Oxford, Ardstraw and New Buildings to come it will certainly not be easy.
