The Shandon Hotel and Spa is now up and running after the entire resort underwent a major refurbishment with an investment of over two million euros. Located on Marble Hill Strand, which is just 25 minutes from Letterkenny and a short drive from Dunfanaghy town, the hotel officially reopened on March 25, which was Easter weekend. It is a very high end four-star resort with 50 newly refurbished bedrooms with a mixture of standard, superior and junior suites. Each bedroom has a panoramic sea view; even the lowest floor has a view to die for. Luxury toiletries sourced from Italy are on offer. The rooms also boast smart TV’s and all rooms have King Double beds or more. The public areas such as the lobby, bar and
restaurant have a modern feel; each with an amazing view of the sea. Carolynne Harrison is the resort General Manager with great support from her management team, Chanelle Da Silva, Spa & Leisure Manager, Robert McElhinney Assistant Manager, Head Chef Lee Vambeck. Carolynne has 10 years’ experience in hospitality management, with seven of those being in Donegal. She is passionate about Donegal and the Wild Atlantic Way, so when she saw this opportunity to open a high end four star resort right on the coast she jumped at the chance. Continued on page 12

Sunglasses are as much for safety as style Sunglasses can give you instant Simon Cowel cool, Victoria Beckham glamour, or the rock star hipness of Bono. But they are much more than a fashion accessory. Sunglasses are an essential tool in safeguarding the health of your eyes and the surrounding tissue. UV radiation increases your odds of getting cataracts, which cloud the eye’s lens and lead to diminished eyesight. It has also been linked to macular degeneration, incurable disease of the macula, a part of the retina that is essential for sharp vision. Other UV-related eye problems are pterygium and pingueculum. A pterygium occurs when the conjunctiva, the tissue that lays over the white of the eye, grows into the cornea. A pingueculum is a yellowish bump of tissue on the white of the eye. As around 80% of damage from UV occurs before the age of 18 it’s important to get children used to wearing hats and sunglasses,
to protect their eyes. It is also important for children to have regular eye examinations throughout their lives. For children and adults who wear glasses, prescription sunglasses are available in a range of stylish designs. Costing from only £35 (€45) for children and £59.95 (€80) for adults complete with tinted prescription lenses, frame and UV protection.

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Malta
to which part of Malta you are standing in. Sliema and St Julian’s specialise in the sort of cheap-and-easy pub grub found in seafront tourist areas Europe over. Unsurprisingly, Malta does seafood rather well, although to increase your chances of dining well it’s often wise to flee the tourist areas and investigate the narrow streets of Valletta. Genuine Maltese cuisine is frustratingly hard to find, although look out for Soppa ta’ L-Armla (Widow’s Soup), a thick, filling sort of vegetable broth.
Often dismissed as little more than a package tourism bolt hole in the middle of the Mediterranean, Malta is a place of surprising diversity and no little history.
Precise knowledge of this island nation’s past, in the UK at least, is usually limited to the fact that it was once part of the British Empire from 1814 to 1964. The temple of Ħagar Qim may have been built as early as 3600BC, making it one of the oldest manmade structures on the planet. Of course, referring to Malta as an ‘island nation’ is also something of an oversight. Technically, it’s an archipelago of rocky outcrops, only three of which – the main island (Malta), Gozo and Comino – are inhabited. Together they make up a mere 122 square miles of land, but there’s much to enjoy, the walled capital city of Valletta, a collection of lovely beaches, fabulous sea views and waters perfect for scuba diving. Here is your guide to Malta, you can decide the pace you want your holiday to go at Malta offers everything as good as the famed Greek Islands!

Resorts
Just north of Valletta, St Julian’s and (particularly) Sliema are Malta’s main tourist areas, home to the busiest sections of seafront, the greatest selection of restaurants and bars, and the main stretches of highrise accommodation.

A Most Unique Hotel and Spa From front page... “The response we have received has been unprecedented. We have been honoured to welcome the local people and those who own holiday homes in the locality. In addition to this, we have successfully targeted the leisure market and have enjoyed high occupancy levels from day one,” Carolynne explained. The Shandon Resort is truly unique because not only does it have a luxury spa, which has become a real talking point, it also has a separate leisure club which boasts a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, kids pool, sauna, steam room and gym.
The Leisure Club is now open to members, but ‘pay as you go’ is also on offer. Food at the Shandon has been a real focus, with Head Chef, Lee Vambeck, who is passionate about food, fine dining and exceptional levels of service. The menu is locally sourced using the finest ingredients, with every single dish and dessert being home made. Afternoon tea overlooking the sea is getting very popular with many ladies extending their spa day along with a glass of champagne. The Shandon Resort is an experience to behold, savour and relive time and time again.

Flavour of the month... This month we hear from Liverpool native, Shaun Hamilton, now living in Strabane. How long have you been living in Strabane? I’ve been living in for Strabane nearly three years now.
Five dream dinner guests (living or dead)? Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette, Roger Federer, Steven Gerrard and for comedy value Kevin Bridges.
the natural fire; and knowing that you’re off work the next day!
Without doubt the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul, but a close second has to be the recent second leg of the Europa League tie against Dortmund. Diceys was rocking!!
Something you love about Strabane? The community spirit and how people come together. They also have made me feel very welcome.
Who or what makes you laugh?
A Favourite holiday destination?
Man United getting beat or crap auditions on X Factor.
I spend all my holidays in Liverpool, so obviously Liverpool some spot ;-).
An ideal night out?
Something unique about Strabane since you been here?
“Die Hard”, and why? “Yippee ki yaaaah m***********!”
An ideal night out would be the Cavern Club in Liverpool listening to the Beatles classics and then onto Popworld when you’re drunk enough to do the ‘macarena without caring!
Favourite food?
An ideal night in?
Have to say a good old roast dinner, has to have cranberry source though.
A box set of some sort, a takeaway, my son being cuddled up to me in front of
A favourite film and why?
Shaun and his son Logan.
Most precious memory of being a Liverpool fan so far?
The football banter! There are so many different people supporting so many different teams, so it’s good to always have the banter, except with Celtic supporters - you couldn’t listen to them haha!

All that Jazz announced for 2016 City of Derry Jazz Festival Spring is in the air and that can only mean one thing – the launch of the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival – with five days of the very best live music set to transform your May Bank Holiday Weekend, April 28 - May 2. The programme, presented by Derry City and Strabane District Council has been launched and topping the bill for the entertainment extravaganza is one of the most renowned names in the Jazz music scene, Roy Ayers. Known as the Godfather of Neo-soul, Ayers’ inimitable style spans the genres as well as the generations as an iconic figure in jazz, soul and R&B. And his music has been sampled by some of the biggest contemporary stars including 50 Cent, Tupac, Ice Cube and Mary J Blige. Vibrophonist and vocalist Ayers will be heading up an impressive array of talent, with over 300 gigs in over 50 venues across the city
for the biggest event of its kind in the North. Over 40,000 people descend on the city annually for the local music event of the year. Launching the programme Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, Councillor Elisha McCallion, said she was looking forward to a fantastic weekend. “There is no doubt that the Jazz Festival weekend is possibly the highlight of the year for us in terms of visitor experiences. The place just comes alive with music and the buzz about the streets is incredible. I think that what makes it so appealing is that there are events for all ages, so while we always attract a dedicated Jazz audience, there’s plenty of entertainment on offer for families and music lovers of all kinds. The programme this year is as always packed full of talent from home and abroad, and I’m looking forward to what promises to be a busy weekend for visitors and a booming time for local businesses.”

favourites among the top class international musicians who attend each year, including Velocity Brown and the Hot Rods, Les Swingin Lovers and the Jaydee Brass Band, will also be making a welcome return. And Bennigans Bar once again hosts an impressive assortment of jazz talent hand-picked by top class local pianist John Leighton.
Among the local legends lending their skills to the line-up will be the Paul McIntyre Trio, Father of Jazz Gay McIntyre, George Hasson, and John and Fiona Trotter The full programme is available online at to name but a few. Regular www.cityofderryjazzfestival.com. For all the

Workshops & Seminars
Turning 60 This week I entered the sixth decade of my life and I was reflecting on who I am now and what I do differently. Strangely I think I feel the same as when I was twenty years old. I am unsure if that is a fact or has nature devised a kind way of making us believe such. Either way it feels good so I shall settle for that. When I look back on my life I can focus on the wonderful changes that have occurred or I can dwell on missed opportunities, the unsaid and the undone. When I focus on the latter I feel drained and tend to want to withdraw, crawl into a corner or hurt myself in some way. In fact I have, over the years, developed quite an array of self-harming techniques. These include over or under working, over or under eating, drinking too much, spending too much, over or under exercising, smoking, negative self-talk, procrastinating and biting my nails or the skin on my fingers. Many of these posed serious risks to my health however in youth we sometimes never think we will grow old and continue such practices unabated.

My life is so much different now. Although I still have the potential to visit all of the above and the transition is far from painless, I believe it is worth it all. I realised I am an experiential learner and getting things wrong taught me so much more than all the good advice that loving carers gave me. My experiences have made me much more tolerant of other peoples’ shortcomings as I am ever so con-
scious of my own. I find giving much easier and self-satisfying than receiving. I am also conscious that by receiving I can give someone else the satisfaction of the ‘giving’ feeling I find so satisfying. Few of us like to be judged so I tend to stop doing that too. In fact I have found that most things I dislike being done to me, most others I meet dislike the same things. Therefore if I would not like it done to me, I choose not to do it to anyone else. One thing I really like is to get ‘let off the hook’ as it were. Now that’s a great feeling for me so I forgive pretty readily as holding grudges, in my experience, only makes life more difficult than it has to be. Over the years I have found that less is more. I can now happily do with less of many things. Less food, less sugar, less sleep, less,
(although regular), exercise, less breathing, less regrets, less annoyance and less stress. I have developed many ways to clear my head and find that I enjoy life much more. I have more awareness, more joy and happiness when I am more mindful of the things I do and say. I am also very thankful for being as well as I am and believe gratitude is a daily practise. I appreciate how mindful self-care allows me to be the person I choose to be and will allow me to remain fit and healthy for many years to come. I am thankful too that I now qualify for a Northern Ireland bus pass. Isn’t life just great? Until the next time Tom Herron

Níos Fearr le Sinn Féin - Making the difference
Making the difference at Assembly and Executive level Despite ever tightening budgetary constraints to the Assembly budget due to almost 2bn in cuts to the Block Grant by the British government since 2010, Sinn Féin has defended our core public services, protected the most vulnerable and continued the drive for economic and social equality. Through the recent negotiations and the Fresh Start Agreement, Sinn Féin prevented the return of British Direct Rule with all the disastrous consequences the direct imposition of Tory policies would have entailed for people here and instead: - Stopped ‘unmitigated’ welfare cuts and imposition of the “bedroom tax.” - Secured an additional £500m package to support the most vulnerable across society. - Stopped the introduction of Water Charges. - Kept prescription charges free for everyone and protected free domiciliary care.
Also in this Assembly mandate we: - Supported the creation of 40,000 jobs across the North. - Protected front line services particularly in health and education. - Supported the employment of 930 more nurses, 460 more allied health professionals and 240 more medical and dental consultants since 2011 - Kept tuition fees for local students at our 3rd level Universities a third lower than those in England. - Ensured the retention of Educational Maintenance Allowance - Consistently backed Equal Right to marriage for the LGBT community in the Assembly.
Sinn Féin the All-Ireland Party Our Ministers have also consistently pursued progressive policies to target social need such as: the extension of the eligibility criteria for
free school meals/school uniform grants; structure projects and weighting Rural additional monies to assist schools in Development Funding towards tackling disadvantaged areas; making in-built rural disadvantage. ‘social clauses’ mandatory in major infra-

Investment in Strabane Schools Estate After decades of lack of investment, there has been unparalleled investment in the schools estate in Strabane since our Sinn Féin Ministers took over the reins at the Department of Education including delivering the state of the art Holy Cross College, the go ahead for new builds for Strabane Academy and Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh and other substantial capital investments in primary and post primary schools throughout West Tyrone.
Omagh Shared Educational Campus Successfully campaigned for the demilitarisation of the former British Military installations at Lisanelly/St Lucia and championed its replacement with a Shared Educational
village Campus. Our Minister John O Dowd has driven the project and with work now well underway on the £130m Strule Shared Education Campus, which will incorporate 6 new schools for 4,000 pupils and will represent the biggest ever educational investment in the north. West Tyrone has also benefited substantially from other Departments under Sinn Féin Ministers including: - More than £180m distributed throughout the constituency in Single Farm Payments. - £64.1m invested through the Rural Development Programme. - £16m has been invested in West Tyrone in the provision of Cultural, Arts and Leisure Services
Constituency Services During the last Assembly term alone, Sinn Féin has dealt with thousands of individual and wider constituency issues and we will continue to provide the most comprehensive constituency service of any political party in West Tyrone on the everyday issues which matter to you and your family.

Your Strongest Voice Locally-Regionally-Nationally “Through good vote management, you can help return your strongest team for West Tyrone. Help maximise our leverage at Assembly Executive level for this constituency and in this Centenary year of the Easter Rising help build further on the mandate right across this island for a new Republic based on national unity and reconciliation underpinned by socio-economic justice and equality of opportunity for all as envisaged in the Proclamation of 1916. On Thursday 5th May, make your vote count by voting 1,2,3,4 right down the line in the order of preference as indicated for each of your Sinn Féin candidates in your local area.”

Michaela, Declan, Grace and Barry are a formidable team whose track record of hard work on behalf of, and dedication to, the people of this constituency is strongly recognised. In the last Assembly Election in 2011, Sinn Féin secured 19699 votes in this constituency, elected three MLA's comfortably and came close to electing a fourth.. Preparations for this election began early last year and party activists in every part of the constituency are well up for the challenge to fully maximise the Sinn Féin vote in West Tyrone and to ensure that the strongest Sinn Féin team possible is returned.

Art O’Hagan reminisces about the the magical ‘Showband Era’ that swept the nation over 50 years ago!
T
he framed images around the Niche Bar of the Fir Trees Hotel celebrate a big part of Strabane’s musical history. As weekend party revellers jive the night away on the dancefloor, the walls around them boast a number of pictures of the Clipper Carlton; the band responsible for instigating the showband craze that swept the nation over 50 years ago. How apt it was, then, that Niche was recently the venue for celebrating the 90th birthday of Art O’Hagan – the former Clipper Carlton bassist and vocalist, who is the last surviving member of the band.
By Michael Ferry Family, friends and musical colleagues gathered together for a memorable evening, with the highlight undoubtedly being Art grabbing the microphone and taking to the stage. Forever the showman, he joined Bobby Moore and Terry McCafferty for an impromptu set that included rousing renditions of “Carrickfergus” and “Sweet Sixteen”.
you’re exposed to that level of positivity on a nightly basis it’s bound to rub off on you. Night after night after night was just a delightful experience for the band and the audience alike and I’ve carried that positive energy with me ever since. I do believe it’s partly why I’m celebrating my 90th.” That joyful journey through the dancehalls and concert halls of the world began for Art in Strabane’s Pallidrome in 1943, aged just 17. “There were five of us and we played there every Saturday night,” he recalled. “We were just known as the Carlton Orchestra at that point, led by pianist Hugh Tourish. Terry Logue was on tenor sax, Hugo Quinn was on trumpet, Mickey O’Hanlon was on drums and I was singing. We would’ve played everything that was going at that time and we got 15 bob a night!”
The North-West Herald caught up with Art a few days after the celebrations and was greeted by a man with a smile and lust for life that shines as brightly as ever. He owes it all, he told us, to his musical past. “I spent so many nights Double Bass entertaining packed dancehalls In developing this initial phase of full of joy and happiness. Being a considerably smaller town than it is today, Art’s double bass soon became the topic of Strabane gossip but not for musical reasons. “I remember one weekend, not long after I first bought the bass, Hugo helped me to carry it from the Pallidrome to where I lived, not far from the ceme-
tery up the ‘head of the town’. This was at four in the morning and we passed Bella Porter’s wee shop on the way up. Bella was in the shop, probably sorting something for later that day; and she looked out and saw the two of us carrying this big object up the hill. The next day word spread around the town that two fellas were carrying a coffin up to the cemetery at four in the morning,” he laughed. After about four years of residency at the Pallidrome the band took a booking in Fintona. It turned out to be packed to the rafters. At this period the band progressed from the Carlton to the Clipper Carlton as the priest that booked them for Fintona asked for a name he could put on a bill. He soon got in contact again and booked them for his hometown of Monaghan. “In those days you had to figure out how on earth you were going to get to Monaghan,” laughed Art. “Patsy Devine ended up taxiing us and when we got there we
saw this huge bill in the hall that said ‘Tonight: The Clipper Carlton from Strabane’.”
Showband
It was to be the first time that the Clipper Carlton name was on a bill. From there things began to snowball and develop, particularly how the band presented themselves on stage and the general performance they would deliver, which started to break away from the more conservative big band and orchestra performance. “At this point my brother Fergus had joined the band along with Vic Fleming from Ballybofey. We got an idea from the famous bandleader Harry Gold. His lead singer would sing four or five songs in a row.; quick dancing songs. By 1956, with Don Shearer on board, we now had four singers in the band so we started singing a song each after one another. This, plus the fact that we stood up injected an element of show into the performance. People loved it. They were dancing away and enjoying

They first flew to the States in 1958, and Art The Clipper Carlton became a still has vivid memories of ‘showband’ in the truest sense the flight. “We took off from fo the word. Not only were Shannon. The Mayor of Limthey accomplished musicians erick was even there seeing and performers, they were us off. It was a four engine comedians, mimics and stage prop-plane. Keeping the act fresh and current was important but could not have been easy in a time where access to popular music wasn’t as easy as it is in this age of everything being just a click away. “Hugh Tourish’s brother lived in Canada and his son had the likes of the Four Lads, who had hits in the fifties like “Faith Can Move Mountains” and “Rain, Rain, Rain”. It was through him we were getting all the new records of the time, so that kept us current and up to date,” explained Art.
20 Showbands The Clippers would go from town to town on a nightly basis as word of mouth spread. Soon they were filling dance-halls up and down the country, with many a new hall opening to accommodate the growing showband craze. “At one point there would’ve been about 20 showbands. That number went up to 60 and then there were hundreds on the circuit. Eventually you couldn’t have went down the road towards a dancehall without passing a band going the other way to their own show,” Art laughed. He continued, “Every night you would’ve been playing to about 1500 people. In Cork we played to 3000 people in the Arcadia Ballroom. Our name is actually on the footpath down there now. We struggled to get to the venue on many a night because of the crowds on the roads heading to see us. It was funny having to tell people to move because we were the band they were walking to see. Crazy, wonderful times!”
New York Those wonderful times would go beyond Ireland, as the Clippers had many suc-
Arriving in New York the band performed at the St Nicolas Arena to a crowd of close to 7000. “It was $3 to get in so we thought there would be nobody at this,” remembered Art. “7000 people! We couldn’t believe it! And they all wanted to meet us and chat to us. They loved the Irish. We toured America seven times and what we loved the most was traveling by limousine from New York to Chicago, from show to show, city to city and meeting Americans and people from all walks of life along the way. It was a great experience.” One of Art’s biggest regrets is that none of the band were equipped with the phone camera technology we take for granted today. “I so wish we had these phones you have today. My word, the people we met and played with along the way - people like Louis Armstrong! I would have some collection of photographs,” he reflected.
LIVE Performers! Another great aspect of the Clipper Carlton story was their endurance as live performers. While Bruce Springsteen gets lauded for his three-hour live shows, the Clipper Carlton would’ve entertained from 9pm to 3am and sometimes even later. “I remember the Lifford Customs Dance. It was a dress dance from 9pm to 3am with supper. At 3am the man came up to us and asked if we’d play for another hour as a lot of people didn’t get their supper yet! There must’ve been a thousand at it. Then he came up at 4am to tell us that some people still weren’t fed. We played till 5am! One of the fellas who was there still meets me and laughs about it to this day,” Art smiled.
Art O’Hagan with his ‘Blonde Double Bass’.
The Clipper Carlton also operated on a 50-50 split with the ballroom or dancehall, as well. This was to benefit the on-going running of dances and to assure that staff were paid. It was a good system while it lasted: a healthy dancehall meant a healthy showband scene. When more pressure was put on the dance-halls, that’s when things started to change, according to Art. “The bands and their singers started recording and topping the Irish charts. This led to management charging the ballrooms more money for their acts and the ballrooms simply couldn’t charge the amount needed for those acts. Many a venue simply folded because they couldn’t sustain it,” he explained. However, Art’s memories of those halcyon days of the ballrooms and dancehalls are predominantly positive and still very vivid in his mind. He keeps an eye on some of the current musical trends and is not without his criticism. “I watch the likes of The Voice and things like that but I have to say, there is a lack a melody there. There just doesn’t seem to be enough melody in that stuff,” he opined. However, he remains very impressed with the musical talent Strabane continues to produce. “Bobby Moore’s grandson, Adam Dolan, is a great young guitar player and singer. He played at my 90th and he was excellent; he’d hardly be anything else given his family! Paul Tully is another great talent with a fine voice, as well,” he stated.
Same Pay Not shy of putting in a long shift on stage aside, Art is in no doubt as to what the most important aspect of the Clipper Carlton’s staying power was. “Everybody got paid the same,” he explained. “There was no big lead singer on more than any other
band members. Our money was split evenly between band members and management. We would hear from other musicians in other bands who weren’t as fortunate as us that they were getting less than others. We thankfully never had that worry and it does lead to friction in bands, even today I’m sure.”
He may have just turned 90 but the positivity that stems from the joy he observed in the dancehalls on a nightly basis is in evidence to this very day. Art can be found driving to town, placing a bet & meeting dear friends of many years with a smile. “I’ve more chance of winning the lottery than I do with the horses, but it’s the craic and the company I enjoy,” he laughed, as the Herald was leaving after an hour in conversation with one of Strabane’s finest sons - 90 years young and getting younger.

Three ‘Northern Lights’ Hit the Road Together Three of the North’s finest songwriters are taking to the stage in a special collaborative tour weaving their stories of the highs and lows, the laughter and tears of everyday living. Ben Glover, Malojian and Matt McGinn take to the road this month, starting at the Roe Valley Arts Centre in Limavady on Wednesday, May 4. They move on to Lisburn’s Island Arts Centre on Friday, May 6 and then The Braid in Ballymena on Saturday, May 7. The mini-tour concludes on Sunday, May 8, at the Black Box, Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Belfast, which will be a 3pm show. 2016 has got off to a special start for Glenarm’s Ben Glover as he picked up the award for International Song of the Year at the UK Americana Awards in January. He co-wrote the award winning song “Blackbirds” with the esteemed singer-songwriter Gretchen Peters. Glover has just finished the recording of his sixth album, “The Emigrant”, which is set to be released on Proper Records in the autumn of 2016. In 2015 he was part of another award winning project, this time collaborating with some of Nashville’s finest musicians called The Orphan Brigade. He was one of the writers of the album and film documentary which was written and recorded in Octagon Hall, a Civil War era house in Kentucky, which just happens to be one of the most haunted houses in the USA. As well as drawing on the troubled history of the house the project also dealt with the

His name was PRINCE! Prince was an eccentric. There was never any doubting that. He would certainly have been a peculiar gent to deal with and he was never one for shying away from the daring and the extravagant. He embraced all aspects for superstardom, draping a purple shaded mystic over himself. It was a persona that was too much for some; for others it was just part of the pop star package, and when it came to being a pop star Prince was the complete package, arguably more so than anyone before or since. Here was someone who controlled their own image and wrote and produced their own songs – often playing all the instruments on his records. He could sing, he could dance and he was an accomplished master of an array of instruments; and he could do all these things on stage at the same time – no auto-tuning, no miming, just raw natural energy and talent. He was the perfect pop star, rock star, funk star. Numerous genres informed and breathed through his music. It was party music, sexual music and, at times, profoundly topical music. Garry Shandling - A Comedy Pioneer The passing of comedian and writer Garry Shandling on March 24 at the age of 66 was yet another unexpected loss of an influential figure in the world of popular culture this year. For anyone who was ever a fan of his work, his impact on how television comedy has progressed over the past 30 years immediately came into focus. In many ways Shandling was a comedian’s comedian. From the beginning he was at odds with the formulaic style of comedy that dominated both stand-up and television. In 1985 he created “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show”, which went on to run for 72 episodes. The show broke down the forth wall, subverting many of the conventions of the sitcom. Shandling and all the characters continually alluded to the fact that they were, indeed, in front of a studio audience, often interacting with and walking into them. Like “Mrs Brown’s Boys” today, the artifice of the situation was highlighted rather than ignored. Shandling followed this with his grand opus, “The Larry Sanders Show”. It ran for 89 episodes through to 1998 on the cable network HBO. It garnered 56 Emmy Award nominations and three wins. Shandling based the
The behind the scenes footage was shot on film, often using hand-held cameras, in a documentary style that added to the impression of privileged back-stage access.
series on his experiences guest hosting “The Tonight Show” for Johnny Carson. Shandling took on the role of Sanders, a fictional talkshow host. Veteran actor Rip Torn played Sanders’ pit-bull-like producer, Artie; and the brilliant Jeffrey Tambor played Hank Kingsley, Sanders’ inept and paranoid talkshow sidekick. Episodes focused on the professional and personal lives of those who worked on the show, with real-life celebrities playing themselves as guests on the show.
bigger after his divorce from Loni Anderson; Larry criticising Michael Bolton’s new shorter haircut; David Duchovny’s confused attraction to Larry, culminating in the recreation of a famous leg-crossing scene from “Basic Instinct”; Hank throwing dog excrement over Vince Vaughn’s car; Jim Carey serenading Larry with a song on-air and berating and belittling him during the ad-break.
Fact and fiction brilliantly collided head-on as celebrity guests would be willing to show a side that contradicted their public personas, often leaving themselves open to ridicule. Examples included Burt Reynolds now confined to a guest house as he couldn’t afford anything
Indeed, the general phoniness of celebrity was sent-up at any given time: Larry wishing to know who else was on the list before agreeing to appear at a charity function “close to his heart”, being a regular example. The show also enjoyed the freedom of being aired on HBO, with profanities used frequently but never gratuitously. The writing was sharp and it deliberately beat on the gutlessness of network television. In one episode, controversial hip-hop act The Wu-Tang Clan were due to appear on Larry’s chat-show that night to perform. The network got cold feet, deeming them “too urban”. Artie memorably and dryly replied, “We can always get my good buddy Lenny Kravitz; he’s only half-urban!” Brilliant writing!
WT HIRE LTD
This would be embraced by Ricky Gervais for “The Office”, as would the lack of any canned laughter. The latter would also be embraced for future sitcoms such as Larry David’s excellent “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and Tina Fey’s “30 Rock”. With “The Larry Sanders Show” Shandling helped to reinvent the sitcom wheel, and any contemporary sitcom that subscribes to the old formulas that he rallied against looks dated and doomed when compared to “The Larry Sanders Show”, despite the latter finishing as far back as 1998. It is perhaps his contribution in reimagining the sitcom that Shandling will best be remembered for. For many comedy writers today “The Larry Sanders Show” is their “White Album”, their “Nevermind”, their “Nevermind The Bollocks”. If you haven’t indulged, you have 89 episode of satirical comedy gold to enjoy. No flipping!
