Two young Strabane teenagers have reaped the benefits of getting involved with Customized Training Services, a decision which has led to a successful coaching venture in the USA.
Jason McCrory and Gavin McNamee recently completed the David Campbell Soccer Award. Following completion of the course they were naturally looking for an outlet to put what they had learned into practice. Jason and Gavin have always been extremely interested in sports and leisure and it has been a passion they have dreamed of exploring further afield. Thanks to consulting with Customized Training Services they were then able to do just that as the service kindly sponsored the pair £500 to travel to the United States to coach at a Children’s Soccer Academy. It was the key opportunity for Jason and Gavin to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that they acquired from the David Campbell Soccer Academy and demonstrate it in an environment where demand

for their skills has never been higher, particularly after the success of the USA national team in this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. The pair, who are set to return from the USA this week, have greatly appreciated Customized Training Services for sponsoring them for this once in a life time opportunity, where they got to travel across the world, experience of different lifestyle and contribute something significant in the process. Both Jason and Gavin would encourage anyone else who has a passion for coaching to follow in their footsteps.

Local optician supports national ‘back to school’ children’s eye health campaign Optometrists around the country are joining in a national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of eye health.
OFF
JUICE COUTURE, CK & GUESS FRAMES FOR UNDER 19's
Led by the Association of Optometrists (AOP), the campaign aims to encourage parents not to overlook their children’s eye health this summer and to include a sight test in their ‘back to school’ routine. Up to 1 million children in the UK1 will return to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem. Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children’s ability to learn and on their behaviour - yet often goes unrecognised by teachers, parents and by the children themselves. Local optometrist, Donal McGovern from D. McGovern Opticians and contact lens Centre of Main St Lifford and Castle St Strabane said: “The importance of good eye health cannot be underestimated. I would urge parents to remember that taking their children to have their eyes checked is just as important as the trip to the dentist, or having their feet measured. This should ideally happen around the age of four, or even before, as problems detected this young can be corrected more easily. Sight testing at an early age could also prevent wasted opportunities as the child enters school – as a child with undiagnosed sight

issues may not be able to learn properly.” Parents are encouraged to include a sight test in their back to school routine. An eye test is free in Northern Ireland on the NHS for all children. Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read to have their eyes checked as optometrists are able to carry out an eye test using pictures. For the months of August and September at D McGovern Opticians we are offering £50 off Juice Couture, Ck and Guess frames for all under 19.

Speaking about the funding announcement, Education Minister John O’Dowd said: “My Department has agreed investment of nearly £720,000 for fire risk improvement works to be carried out at the school. “A total of 74 minor works projects amounting to over £8million were agreed in June across all board areas, providing ongoing investment in the schools estate.” Minor works are schemes less than £500,000 and are projects ranging from minor repair to more significant work projects and extensions. In conclusion the Minister said: “I am confident that the substantial investment in minor works projects will help in the drive to improve educational standards in addition to providing a boost to the local construction industry. The completion of all of these works will ultimately
provide better facilities for our children and young people to learn in and an improved working environment for teachers and other school staff.”

Joe McGarrigle: “Everyone dies, but not everyone lives”- well Joe lived!” A Youtube video made in tribute to a Strabane man who lost his battle to cancer in July has already garnered thousands of views mere days after it was uploaded. Joe McGarrigle from Bridge Street in Strabane passed away at the age of 33 in the early hours of July 11 after battling terminal cancer since it was diagnosed in November 2011. The 13-minute video titled ‘A Special Tribute to Joe ‘The Legend’ McGarrigle’ is a montage of photos of Joe along with his many friends from Strabane and further afield and all to the soundtrack of three of Joe’s favourite songs: “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” by Crash Test Dummies and Take That’s ‘Rule The World’ and ‘Never Forget’. Joe successfully fought cancer in 2009 and eventually returned to his work as a forensic psychologist in England before discovering that the cancer had returned and this time it was terminal with a prognosis of six to nine months.
Fundraising Drive
The late Joe McGarigle. Page 4 September 2013 The Herald
What followed was the biggest fundraising drive that Strabane has ever seen, as the people of the town joined Joe’s family and friends in what became known as the ‘Joe McGarrigle Stayin’ Alive Campaign’. Through all sorts of inventive events such as a calender, where a few Strabane men bravely bared all during an unforgiving December, sky-dives, runs from Derry to Strabane, bag packs, concerts, a Christmas song, a ‘Brawl in the Hall’ boxing event and one very vocal local Liverpool supporter taking a vow of silence during his beloved Reds’ matches when they were screened live in Diceys, the people of Strabane and beyond managed to raise in excess of £100,000 for specialist treatment in a Next Generation Clinic in China. Joe went on to make a number of journeys to and from China to undergo pioneering medical treat-

ment. Initially, the treatment appeared to be successful and at a time when doctors predicted that Joe would succumb to his illness he was, in fact, enjoying and living his life to the full with his family and friends. Sadly, the cancer returned last year and subsequently spread. As news of his passing in the early hours of Friday, July 11 circulated, friends from all over the world took to Facebook to pay tribute. His funeral service that Sunday at Melmount Chapel was a special service held at 4pm to accommodate the large numbers wishing to pay their respects. After leaving the McGarrigle home at Bridge Street, 56 of Joe’s family and friends took turns to carry the coffin to the chapel. A beautiful service was held with Paul Tully, Glenn Rouse and Joe’s brother-in-law Gary Doherty performing beautiful renditions of Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’, Oasis’s ‘Whatever’, Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’ and Take That’s ‘Never Forget’. Joe’s brothers, Sean and Seamus, sister, Louise, and friend Mickey Ferry all delivered moving and often fittingly funny speeches in tribute to him. Joe’s brother, Sean, paid a beautiful tribute to both Joe and the people who had given him support over the past few years. On the ‘Joe McGarrigle Stayin’ Alive’ Facebook page he wrote, “There hasn’t been a single day from when he first got the news back in November 2011 that people haven’t been in touch to ask how he’s been keeping, offering to help in some way or just wishing him well, so I think that shows how amazing he was and how amazing you continue to be. Joseph inspired and continues to inspire so many people and his positive attitude and general feelings on how to live life will continue to do so for an eternity. There are no words really to fill the void that he’ll leave, but he would have wanted us to remember the good times, the craic, the madness, the parties, the concerts, the smiles, the dances, the silly songs, the wonky eye when he’d had one too many, the determination, the positive attitude, the grateful-
ness and most of all, the will to overcome any shit that life throws your way. Don’t take it lying down and be the best that you can be, because that’s what he did and he had a brilliant life because of it.” Here is just a small sample of the countless tributes paid to Joe McGarrigle on Facebook. “It is so sad to read all the statuses about the loss of the amazing Joe Mc Garrigle. The respect everyone has for you is a mark of the fantastic and brave person you were. It was a privilege to know and work with you and you have left a hole in whatton that will not be filled again! Rest in peacexx.” “So sorry for Joe’s loss! He put up a great fight. His legendary rants certainly made me put my life in context.... where it’s at.... where it’s going??... I’ll try not to moan when I’m getting it easy, bud! “Everyone dies, but not everyone lives”- well Joe lived!” “The word legend is thrown around far too easily these days, but Joe you were exactly that. You were an inspiration to us all buddy and you have left a legacy in this town that will never be forgotten.” “One of the bravest, most inspirational, positive and downright sound people I’ve ever known. Incredibly sad news but, like many, I feel unbelievably lucky have known you. Rest in peace Joe, you’ll live long in the memory of the many people who experienced the pleasure of your company.” “Heartbreaking news to wake up to this morning, Strabane has truly lost one of its best and biggest characters. It is clear to see from the outpouring on here how loved he was.” “You’ll see lots of posts today about the town losing a legend. And there’s a damn good reason for that. If Strabane had a heart it’s been thoroughly smashed in 2 today. My thoughts are with the brilliant McGarrigle family. What a fight you put up Joe. Now sleep tight buddy. You could do with the rest. Let’s all remember him in the way he was best known. A man who lived his life to the full and could make ye laugh til you cried. X”

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats Every month, the Herald speaks to a local son or daughter, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond where they grew up we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for home and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Patrick McGinley. When did you leave Strabane and to where? Well I haven’t lived permanently in Strabane since 2006, having spent most of my time in Liverpool (studying/ working). However, this year I moved to Maryland, USA where my fiancée is from. Something Strabane has that your new home doesn’t have? I think that Strabane has a certain natural charm to it that my current home doesn’t. Where I live now was purpose built in the 1960s as a commuter town between Washington D.C and Baltimore. It’s generally a conglomeration of neighbourhoods, malls and office buildings…sounds delightful. I think that in some essence Strabane is a rather quaint place with the Mourne flowing through the town and the Sperrins looming in the background. Where in Strabane did you grow up? I grew up in Laurel Drive, right at the bottom. Our stomping grounds were usually in the Industrial Estate or the Golf Course adjacent to us. Chances are if you worked in Melmount Foods or played the back nine in the mid-90s
and ushered a group of children away, I was probably in amongst them menacingly wielding a stick…haha only joking, that was probably Giulio Vaccaro. (again, joking)
exuberant celebration of Strabane. My fondest memories of those days were watching local bands, like Elmo or Loaded, ply their trade on stage at the Score Site, Market St, or the Car Park where the Alley Theatre now is. Moving somewhere foreign isn’t as daunting as it might first appear, my auntie Kate moved to Omagh 40 years ago and she turned out grand, haha. Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? Music Biopics: That’s a Wrap! It was attempted with Laurence Fishburne on board. It was attempted with Prince on board. It was even attempted with Eddie Murphy on board! Finally, however, this summer a Jimi Hendrix biopic is ready to hit the big screens, with Andre 3000, from hip-hop duo Outkast, taking on the lead role as the left-handed guitar icon in ‘All Is By My Side’.
Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix.
The British and Irish produced film was written and directed by John Ridley. One big stumbling block for any previous attempt to bring Hendrix’s life to the big screen was the refusal of Experience Hendrix LLC (Hendrix’s estate) to allow any of his compositions to be used in any film focusing on his life. Unfortunately for Ridley, and indeed all involved in ‘All Is By My Side’, they were also refused permission. Instead, the film – set in London in1966 and1967 – will include the songs that Hendrix performed during those years, shortly before the release of his debut album, ‘Are You Experienced?’. From teasers and trailers, it seems evident that Andre 3000 has all the physical attributes and characteristics Hendrix presented on camera well honed. However, like all biopics the line between fact and fiction is sure to be crossed willy-nilly throughout, which ultimately raises the question- what is the point of this movie? Are musical biopics not just a pantomime of fact, where wigs are donned, romanticised notions of the depicted period heightened and where characterisations verge on parody and cartoon? In fairness, there is an argument for films attempting to delve into musicians whose lives and careers were during a time when limited or no visual footage was captured, like the life of Robert Johnson, who died aged just 27 in 1938 or the life of ‘Blind’ Willie McTell, as he performed on the streets of Georgia in the ’20s and ’30s.
Joaquin Phoenix played Johnny Cash.
Is there not enough film in the can of the real Jimi Hendrix? Why do we need to see someone do an imitation in a scene that most likely never actually occurred in the first place? What can ‘All Is By My Side’, with its limited repertoire and questionable take on the facts tell us that a comprehensive documentary on the life of Hendrix like ‘Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train ‘A Comin’ with its in-depth interviews with those who were there, interview footage of the man himself, all to the backdrop of actual Hendrix music and live performances, can’t? Now there’s a challenge! Find a musical biopic that eclipses a detailed, well researched and well presented documentary on the same subject matter. Is there a point to the Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk The Line’ after watching ‘Johnny Cash: The Last Great
American’ or ‘Johnny Cash: The Story of Folsom Prison’? Oliver Stone’s 1991 biopic ‘The Doors’ now seems long forgotten and this is no bad thing in light of such wonderful insights into the band as ‘The Story Of LA Woman’ and ‘The Doors: No-one Here Gets Out Alive’. Gary Oldman had ‘Sid Vicious’ down pretty well in Alex Cox’s 1986 biopic ‘Sid and Nancy’ but it’s the only positive to come from that particular mess. Sit that film next to Julian Temple’s excellent ‘The Filth and the Fury’ documentary film from 2000 and it just doesn’t pale in comparison, it evaporates from existence. With footage of the real events, frank interviews with the surviving band members and even a rare interview with Sid himself, ‘The Filth and the Fury’ has hopefully guaranteed that a Sex Pistols biopic will never happen again. Although, since when has doing the right thing mattered to film producers?
Gary Oldman played Sid Vicious in ‘Sid & Nancy’.
Daniel Johnston is one of the great alternative music icons, with his quirky, simplistic yet ultimately enlightening and endearing songs. He was also the subject matter of one of the greatest rock documentaries in recent times, 2005’s ‘The Devil and Daniel Johnston’. It chronicles Johnston’s life from childhood up to the present, with an emphasis on his experiences with bipolar disorder, and how it manifested itself in demonic self-obsession. The film was directed by Jeff Feuerzeig and produced by Henry S. Rosenthal, although one could argue that Johnston made and supplied much of the footage himself. Johnston has lived a life that he has chronicled and documented on audio recordings and short films from a very young age, even moments of major crisis. They are all captured here in this amazing documentary, hopefully rendering any recreation of Johnston’s life on the big screen a pretty pointless endeavour. Will that stop it happening? Probably not. Will it be better than ‘The Devil and Daniel Johnston’? Definitely not! Realistically, it’s impossible to condense a life down to two hours of film. Therefore more surreal takes on the lives of musicians make for more interesting viewing. 2001’s supernatural, horror-comedy fest ‘Bubba Ho-Tep’ found Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) alive and residing in a nursing home with JFK (Ossie Davis), who survived his assassination attempt only for the powers-that-be to shove a bag of sand into his head wound, dye him black and send him out into a world that would never believe his story. Together they do battle with an ancient mummy, who is stalking the home and sucking the souls out of residents via their rectums. The best Elvis movie of them all? Probably. Better than any Elvis biopic? You got that right, baby! Another bizarre detour was taken with 2007’s ‘I’m Not There’. It didn’t so much focus on the life of Bob Dylan as it did the myths of Bob Dylan. We see Dylan characterised in a number of ways through-
out, shifting age, ethnicity and even gender (Cate Blanchett depicts Dylan circa 65-66!). It was an interesting twist on an overall story that simply cannot be told in straight biopic form. However, Martin Scorsese’s epic Dylan documentary from 2005, ‘No Direction Home’, with its unlimited source material, contributors, not to mention full support and involvement of his Bobness himself, saw that nothing, apart from D.A. Pennebaker’s ‘Dont Look Back’ documentary film, which was released in 1967, has achieved the same microscopic vision of Dylan. Admittedly, Scorcese did borrow heavily from much of Pennbaker’s footage of Dylan, both used and unused, from the 1965/66 period for his own documentary film. Naturally, none of this will ever stop biopics being made and the dodgy wigs being donned. It remains a lucrative Oscar vehicle for film producers and actors alike. However, the ‘Best Documentary Feature’ is a category worth looking at each year at the Oscars, particularly this year as the gong went to the Morgan Neville-directed ‘20 Feet From Stardom’. It follows the lives of backup singers Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Táta Vega, and Jo Lawry, among many others who have helped colour some of the greatest music since the birth of rock ‘n’ roll while the spotlight remained on the lead singer and band. At least one story in that documentary may now have film producers stroking their film-maker beards as they mentally form a script that will ultimately end up being something infinitely inferior to ‘20 Feet From Stardom’. In July we learned that the last surviving original member of the Ramones, Tommy Erdelyi aka Tommy Ramone, sadly passed away at the age of 65. The Ramones story is one from the very heart of the New York punk scene of the 1970s that exploded out of the desolate s*** infested toilet that was CBGB on 315 Bowery, intersecting Bleecker Street, in the East Village. It has passion, fall-outs, deceptions, heartbreak, insecurity, heroes, villains, a cast of many familiar faces and a soundtrack to warrant the right to throw any person asking a DJ for ‘some chart music’ during a spin of ‘Judy Is A Punk’ into a cage with the heel of a loaf jammed into their mouths. With all four original members now quarrelling in the ether, the prospect of a Ramones biopic looms. Anyone even thinking of going down such a perilous path should watch last year’s dreadful Randall Miller-directed ‘CBGB’, starring Alan Rickman as club owner Hilly Kristal. As Marc Campbell on Dangerousminds.net rightly put it: “If you thought the CGGB’s bathrooms were full of s*** check out the movie!” Sit ‘CBGB’ in all it lazy, cheap inauthenticity next to 2005’s no holds barred, warts and all documentary film ‘End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones’, produced and directed by Jim Fields and Michael Gramaglia, and you will see that the latter is clearly the final word on the band, or at least should be. As we know, it most probably won’t be. Aside from what’s mentioned in this article, on right is ten more music documentaries worth checking out.
Female actor Cate Blanchett played Bob Dylan in ‘I’m not there’.
Music Biopics: ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ (2012) Directed and written by the late-Malik Bendjelloul, it details the efforts of two Cape Town fans in the late 1990s, Stephen ‘Sugar’ Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumoured death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true, and, if not, to discover what had become of him. Rodriguez’s music, which never took off in the United States, had become wildly popular in South Africa, but little was known about him there. ‘Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten’ (2007) directed by Julien Temple about Joe Strummer, the lead singer of The Clash. ‘The Last Waltz’ (1978) Martin Scorsese chronicles one of the most legendary nights in rock history, as an unparalleled lineup of rock superstars -- including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison -- take the stage for “The Band’s” 1976 farewell concert. ‘Standing in the Shadows of Motown’ (2002) Paul Justman recounts the story of The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unheralded studio musicians who were the hand picked house band by Berry Gordy in 1959. They were the band who recorded and performed on Motowns’ recordings from 1959 to 1972. ‘Still Bill’ (2009) Damani Baker and Alex Vlack’s often moving film follows the life of Bill Withers, from his roots in West Virginia to his career in the United States Navy, to his famed musical career and post retirement family life. ‘Runnin’ Down a Dream’ (2007) Peter Bogdanovich’s documentary film about Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. The epic yet lull-free four-hour documentary chronicles the history of the band with stunning depth and detail. ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’ (2008) Sacha Gervasi’s film about the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil. The film features interviews with other musicians who have been influenced by the band, including Slash, Tom Araya, Lemmy, Scott Ian, and Lars Ulrich. ‘New York Doll’ (2005) Greg Whiteley’s documentary based on the life of former New York Dolls member Arthur ‘Killer’ Kane to the backdrop of the surviving members’ reformation in 2004. ‘Warren Zevon: Keep Me In Your Heart’ (2003) Nick Read’s documentary film explores Zevon as he records a farewell album “The Wind” while suffering from terminal lung cancer. He had the option of treatment to extend his life, but decided to go out with a bang recording this five time Grammy nominated album. The documentary goes inside his early stages of life, but primarily focuses on the struggle of this recording. It’s a very touching documentary that shows the life and times of one of the great musical mavericks. ‘Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ (2004) Don Letts’s documentary sees Scott-Heron tell his own story for the first time - from being one of the first black children to integrate an all-white Southern state school to becoming the Godfather of Rap. There are contributions from Chuck D, Mos Def, Richie Havens and the Last Poets, among others.

From ‘Spin Doctor’ to ‘Rude Doctor’ The much anticipated new series of ‘Doctor Who’ will start airing from Saturday, August 23 on BBC One. The series will be the first to star Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, and will co-star Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald in her first full series. The first episode of the series, “Deep Breath”, has a running time of 75 minutes, the longest series opener since the return of ‘Doctor Who’ in 2005. Capaldi is most famous, for now, as the foul mouthed political spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker, who ruled Downing Street and Westminster with an iron fist and a venomous tongue in the BBC political satire ‘The Thick of It’. Naturally, one wonders if the new Time Lord will share any of Tucker’s traits and it appears he that he may, with the pre-watershed obviously considered. Producer, Steven Moffat has revealed that Capaldi’s Doctor will be very different to his polite and mild-mannered predeces-

The breakup of Garvey’s family (none of whom were taken in The Sudden Departure) puts more and more of a strain on him. The series was created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta and is based on Perrotta’s novel of the same name. HBO acquired rights for series development with Perrotta attached as writer/executive producer and Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger as executive producers in August 2011, shortly before the book came out. Going to print, no date has been set for the series to begin but keep an eye on Sky Atlantic for updates, with a September airing seeming likely.

A Question of Debt? ...write your own story!
Workshops & Seminars
It seems the whole world is in debt. Certainly the Western World is struggling with debt. Have you ever asked yourself ‘who actually owes who? We have heard of terms such as ‘bond holders’ ‘quantitative easing’, securitisation and the like however what do these terms really mean and what have they to do with the average man and woman on the street? new security are based off of the underlying value and cash flows of the assets used in the securitization process. Companies will securitize illiquid assets into liquid assets in order to increase their overall liquidity and generate immediate proceeds from their assets.
Now to the subject of securitization! During the 90s and 00s it became common practice for lending institutions to sell on loans such as mortgages to another entity called a special purpose vehicle (SPV) which was specially created for the job.
Now how can these things possibly affect ‘Joe Public’? It seems we are all affected. Over the years, government, especially that of Mrs Thatcher in the Investopedia’s definition of ‘Quantitative 1980s, encouraged us all to get involved in the easing’ is as follows: An unconventional monetary policy in which a stock market. central bank purchases government securities or Remember the BT share sell off for example? other securities from the market in order to lower We could all become share holders in lots of cominterest rates and increase the money supply. panies listed on the Stock exchange. Quantitative easing is considered when short-term However as the ‘bondholders’ definition above interest rates are at or approaching zero, and does states, when ‘Joe Public’ invested in bank shares not involve the printing of new banknotes. and the banks went ‘bust’ in 2008 the public lost out as the shares became next to worthless and the Finally investopedia’s definition of public purse had to pay the bondholders. ‘securitisation’: A pooled group of financial assets that together This means if you happened to be a bank sharecreate a new security, which is then marketed and holder in 2008 you lost most of the value of the sold to investors. This meant that an off shore company created monies to pay the original lender cash for mortgages and their offshore status kept them out of the reach of the taxman. This may also mean that the lender you took the alleged loan out with originally may not in fact own the alleged loan as it has been sold on to the SPV.
Investopedia’s definition of ‘Bondholder’ is... ‘The owner of a government or corporate bond. Being a bondholder is often considered safer than being a shareholder because if a company liquidates, it must pay its bondholders before it pays its shareholders. Being a bondholder entitles one to receive regular interest payments, if the bond pays interest (usually semiannually or annually), as well as a return of principal when the bond matures’.

holders. Did anyone inform you that this was a possibility at the time you purchased the bank shares? Quantatitive Easing increases the money supply by creating money out of nothing and has the affect of keeping the price of commodities high such as the price of oil or raw materials. It is strange that when the western world was plunged into recession in 2008, the price of raw materials actually rose, contrary to the laws of supply and demand. That’s how quantitative easing may have affected each and every one of us.
I wonder how many readers are at this point in time struggling with issues concerning debt.
The mortgage company may simply be acting as agents for the SPV however they continue to make you believe that the still own the alleged loan. How is possible that a company can still own something if they have sold it on? On the one hand the lenders claim to own the loan when appearing in a court of law, however regarding the payment of due taxes and duties it seems they are not indeed the owner as it has been sold to the SPV. These companies seem to believe they can own something and not own it simultaneously. Until the next time. Tom Herron

NWRC Students Sample Liverpool Experience Two students from North West Regional College’s Strabane Campus have just returned from an all-expenses paid residential trip to John Moores’ University in Liverpool. Sasha Hawkes and Eunan Hegarty are students on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health Studies course at the College’s Derry Road campus, and were selected for this 3 day opportunity which was open to any student considering application to LJMU in the next UCAS cycle. The trip involved no cost to the students, and included return flights and accommodation, and all food costs were are covered by the university. Omagh girl Sasha Hawkes explained it was a great opportunity to not only visit Liverpool, but to discover more about potential career opportunities in the Health industry: “I’m not sure why I was chosen out of all the others but they must have liked what I said! The fact that we have completed other qualifications whilst on the course might have helped too. We have done Deaf Awareness training, courses in Heart Start, Manual Handling and 1st Aid. We got to see around the university and the city and the itinerary was packed from morning to night every day. We had get to know you sessions with all the team and workshops about student life and applications, and there was lots of free time and social activities. Meanwhile, former Holy Cross pupil Eunan Hegarty said this experience has enabled him to focus on undertaking a Degree in paramedic training and support. “I’ve always wanted to work at helping people and the life of a paramedic looks exciting and rewarding at the same time. “I was a bit taken back when my lecturer asked me to fill in the application form for the Residential Scheme but they must have liked what they saw. I got a text message telling I was successful and was made up about it. There were 50 of us from Northern Ireland and it was a great chance to get a feel for the university and the Liverpool people. It was also

a good opportunity to make new friends. If I am successful in my application to go and study to be a paramedic then I’ll be a lot more comfortable with where I’m going.” Eunan has enjoyed his time at the College and likes the mature treatment that students get. “I have been treated like an adult here and find it a lot more relaxed compared to school. The coursework element of the Level 3 really suits me.” Places are still available on the range of full-time and part-time courses available at the NWRC Strabane Campus this September – for information on these options visit www.nwrc.ac.uk

Treats in store for brides at Kee’s Hotel The Vintage Wedding Specialists since 1845 ‘One wedding a day’...The Kee’s Way It may be a rare success story in Ireland, especially for family-run businesses, but Kee’s Hotel in Stranorlar has recently celebrated 120 years of ownership of this well-known and highly rated establishment in Donegal. Having been bought by the great grandfather of the current management team in 1892, the hotel has been in constant operation since then, providing exceptional traditional Irish hospitality. So with all these years of experience in welcoming guests and catering to their every needs, it is no surprise that brides and grooms have been choosing Kee’s as their preferred wedding venue for generations, and very often generations within the same local families. With a constant refurbishment plan in place, the hotel’s banqueting facilities are on a par with the best in the county and the recent creation of the Terrace Garden, leading directly from the Ballroom, enhances the existing excellent facilities. With original features such as the arched door entrance, a lantern-lit covered walkway from hotel to Ballroom and the lovely wrought iron pagoda, guests can now enjoy outdoor drinks receptions. These interesting architectural features create the perfect backdrop for any wed-
ding photographer. In the evening, the Terrace becomes a romantic and atmospheric space. Kee’s Hotel have a fantastic Winter & Midweek Package offering incredible value at just €39.50. The effect of acupuncture during Pregnancy/IVY and labour Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help

As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Become an NWRC student at Derry Road Campus in Strabane!
Experience North West Regional College this September There are many reasons why students choose to further their education at North West Regional College in Strabane, Limavady and Derry~Londonderry.
and dedication of the College’s teaching staff, students would not be achieving their potential. From the support staff who assist students with application, financial assistance and pastoral care, to the lecturers who bring their industry experience to the course subjects they teach, students are welcomed into a learning environment designed to help them achieve. In fact, many of this year’s award winning students attribute their success to that support received from their lecturers, the practical nature of studying at NWRC, and the fact they enjoy the NWRC experience.
From the state-of-the-art learning facilities, to the expertise of the lecturing staff, the College has experienced a steady growth in applications in recent years, with students keen to gain practical qualifications that equip them for university or employment. Before the Class of 2014 finished for the summer, applications for September were already up by 10% on last year. Demand is therefore high for full-time places, but the College is still accepting applications for the majority of the courses that will commence in just a few weeks. There’s never been a better time to become an NWRC student, especially given the new opportunities that the College is now providing at the Derry Road Campus in Strabane. In September last, the College unveiled a £1.2m estate investment which marked its 75th anniversary of providing first rate further education and training to local people across the Strabane District. With new hairdressing and beauty salons, specialist music facilities, a brand new library and student union area, the College’s Derry Road location now provides local learners with facilities to match the quality of the teaching on offer.
(Children & Young People), Care & Health, Hair & Beauty, and Dental Nursing. This year the College also has a range of new Training for Success options for local school leavers, which provide them with practical skills and a recognised qualification specialising in a vocational subject such as construction skills or hairdressing and beauty therapy. These students also receive a weekly training allowance and work placement opportunities as part of their course.
Across all options the College provides the Students can choose full-time options in chance to gain the qualifications that employMusic Technology, Computing, Early Years ers are looking for. The practical work experience included in these courses is an added benefit in applying for work or a degree level study as NWRC students have a hands-on insight into their chosen career path.
Progressing from GCSEs, students may choose a Level 2 course to boost their qualifications, or move directly into a Level 3 Diploma in a career related area. From this they can gain a recognised qualification with UCAS points equal up to 3 A level passes. A significant number of Level 3 students choose to then move onto University or higher education at NWRC. The American Rocky Mountains during the early 19th century, rugged and untamed. Follow the journey of Plumbridge born Robert Campbell, and his companion Cavan man, Thomas Fitzpatrick through this magnificent wilderness. Using the work of the artist, Alfred Jacob Miller, who recorded the images of the people of the area, from proud Native Americans, to wild mountain men; “Three Worlds Meet” is a stunning multi- media experience, using projections, music and spoken word. As well as the projections, the images are brought to life on stage, as the actors bring to life the images through a series of posed recreations, which are as visually stunning as the original image. Blended with the traditional sounds of Native American flute and drum, as well as contemporary fiddle, this is a performance to celebrate a meeting of civilisations and cultures. This wonderful piece will be Friday 12th September

Macmillan Cup • Melvin Sports Complex • Saturday September 20th 2014
Macmillan Cup organisers hope to surpass last year’s success Following its hugely successful inaugural seven-a-side competition last year, the Macmillan Cup returns on Saturday, September 20 at Melvin Sports Complex. Last year, the competition raised over £1700 to be donated to Strabane’s Macmillan nurses and the organisers are hoping to surpass the £2000 mark this time around. Winners last year were Charlie’s Bar and they will be returning this year in the hope of retaining the cup. Just like last year, the 16 team football tournament will have four groups of four, kicking off at 1.15pm sharp.

Charity Football Match Raises £2000 for ‘Friends of Knockavoe’ A recent charity football match in aid of ‘Friends of Knockavoe’ that took place at Melvin Park raised a fantastic £2000. Playing on the day were Junior’s Bar (‘Mary O’s) and the Legends 7 Celtic Supporters Club, with the latter winning 4-2 on what was a splendid day for football, with a fine crowd in attendance. The match was organised by Aidan ‘Cookie’ Dunne and Gerard McColgan and was refereed by Gregory ‘Gigs’ Connolly, who had the ‘shaving foam’ at the ready if required. Football history was also in the making that day as Ryan Giggs made his managerial debut for Manchester United. That landmark was
mirrored in Strabane as Terence Carlin took on the Assistant Manager role for Junior’s Bar, under the masterful tutelage of Manager, ‘Cookie’ Dunne. Like Jose Mourinho and Daniel LaRusso before him, Carlin is proving to be a keen student! A great day’s craic on the football field was followed by a buffet, refreshments and a Karaoke evening held in Junior’s Bar, where a brilliant night was had by all. It is now hoped that the charity match will become an annual event. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, Aidan ‘Cookie’
Dunne said, “it was a great success and the game was well attended so hopefully we’ll be able to do it all again next year. All the players are a credit to themselves as they all went out with sponsor sheets and each helped to raise the wonderful total of £2000. I’d like to thank each and every one of them. Thanks also go to Strabane Athletic who sponsored the match ball and O’Neill’s Sportswear, who kindly supplied pennants for the teams to exchange. I’d also like to thank ‘Gigs’ Connolly for refereeing.”
