Eighties Night For Aiden Gets A Sequel After a hugely successful night last summer, ‘Eighties for Aiden’ will be returning on September 12 to the Fir Trees. Once again, it will give people the opportunity to embrace those loud and fabulously outlandish fashions from back in the day, and enjoy of night of music from the decade that gave us Live Aid, ‘Footloose’, ‘Eastenders’, the kids from ‘Fame’ and ‘Maverick’ and ‘Goose’. Once again, the night will be held in memory of Strabane man, Aiden McAteer, with all proceeds on the night going towards Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI. Early last year, Strabane sadly lost a good friend and the McAteer family lost a amazing brother and son as Aiden sadly passed away following a brave battle with Leukemia. Mickey Ferry, one of the event organisers, outlined the reasoning behind ‘Eighties For Aiden’. “Throughout his illness and treatment, Aiden’s attitude and positive spirit never faltered. That legendary smile was forever present as he greeted people just like he always did. His positivity is a lasting memory that continues to inspire. Aiden traveled far and wide and made his mark everywhere he went. He also worked in many establishments in Strabane. Simply put - he knew everybody and everybody knew him. And anybody who really knew Aiden knew that he liked all things 1980s. With that in mind we decided to host an eighties night last year in memory of the man himself with all proceeds going towards Leukaemia & Lym-

phoma NI. Last August was an amazing night, so in proper 80s fashion we’re going for a sequel!” explained Mickey. ‘Eighties For Aiden II’ will be held once again in the main function hall of the Fir Trees, this time on Saturday, September 12. Once again, people can have some fun with it and have an eighties theme to what they are wearing on the night. “That’s optional of course, but we’d love to see some mullets, leg warmers, Sonny Crockets etc,” added Mickey. There will also be loads of raffles and prizes on the night, and yes, a prize for the BEST OUTFIT. Admission is £5. For more information check out the Facebook event page ‘Eighties For Aiden II’.

Kee’s Hotel embraces past & present A recent visit by the TG4 team proved to be nostalgic for Vicky Kee and her family as they recalled stories of times past for the new series of ‘Rúin na nÓstán’ due to be screened this winter. First established as a hotel in 1845, it was bought by William James Kee in 1892 for the princely sum of £400 and has remained in the same family for four generations. Along with staff members past and present, as well as local historians, the family recalls intriguing anecdotes from Kee’s Hotel’s unique heritage.

Laura McVeigh won the Mental Health Innovation Award at the prestigious awards ceremony organised by the Royal College of Nursing and held at the Culloden Hotel. Laura, originally from the Ballycolman Estate, is a primary mental health worker for adolescent hidden harm with the Southern Trust. In 2009, the Trust developed a partnership with Barnardos staff in the Newry Young People’s Project in a bid to raise awareness about hidden harm and how it affects the emotional and mental health of young people living in homes where alcohol, drug misuse or parental mental ill-health are prevalent. Laura has had a vital role

in this project and has been instrumental in overseeing its success. Paying tribute to the Castlewellan based Nurse, her nominator said Laura’s qual-
ities and professionalism are a “showcase for how nursing can influence practice delivery for young people living with hidden harm.”

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Sperrin Sinn Féin Cllr, Dan Kelly, has welcomed confirmation from officials at Transport NI that they will reconsider the need for a right turning lane on the A5 at the Cloughcor Road junction. “I very much welcome confirmation from Transport NI officials that they are to initiate an assessment into the need for a right-turning lane on the A5 at the junction with the Cloughcor Road. I have been lobbying Roads Service and latterly Transport NI on the need for a proper right turning lane at this junction for over three years and was disappointed when it was not included as part of the recent road works on the A5 through Cloughcor. Recent accidents at the junction involving parents taking their children to the local Primary School have highlighted again the potential death trap that this junction can pose. The Cloughcor Road is the main route to the local church and primary school, and given that there are over 220 children travelling twice daily through it to St Mary’s, it is beyond comprehension how this is the only junction on this stretch of the A5 that still does not have a dedicated right turning lane. Having recently addressed the issue again with Mr Des McFarlane, the Network Development Manager, I am glad that Transport NI have now indicated they will undertake this assessment and I look forward to seeing this junction upgraded and made safe for the benefit of all road users as soon as possible.”

Macmillan Cup organisers hoping for successful tournament
TY!
N U O C E H T IN K C A R T T S E G R A L
Darren Wallace, one of the organisers of the annual Macmillan Cup held in Melvin, handing over a cheque for £2155.63 to Josephine McGinn and Paul Sweeney, Macmillan area Fundrasing Manager following last year’s tournament.
The Macmillan Cup returns on Saturday, September 5 at Melvin Sports Complex. The competition is now in its third year, with last year’s tournament raising £2155.63 for Strabane’s Macmillan nurses. Winners last year were Mopack, following a dramatic penalty shoot-out, and they will be returning this year in the hope of retaining the cup. The 16 team 7-aside football tournament will have four groups of four, kicking off at 1.15pm sharp. The top two in each group qualify for quarter finals. The tournament then becomes a straight knockout competition, with two semi-finals and a final to follow. As with the first two years, the team places were instantly taken up, such was the high volume of interest. With an entrance fee of £10 per player and a further £30 per team to be sponsored by a business or individual, over £1600 has already been raised.
Better every year Darren Wallace, one of the chief organisers of the tournament is hopeful of beating the impressive amount raised last year. “In our first year we raised £1700 and managed to raise £2155.63 last year. Hopefully we can surpass that total this year. Funds will be raised via a number of ways: alongside the tournament we’ll also have a prize
draw and, weather permitting, a barbeque. A new addition this year will be a Master Penalty Competition that spectators can take part in; everyone loves hitting a penalty so people can have the craic and raise funds in the process,” explained Darren. Following the conclusion of the final and the trophy presentations, participants and spectators are invited to call into Dicey Riley’s for the post tournament buffet. The fun moves across to Murphy’s On The Green that night where there will be a special 70s/80s/90s themed disco. “Once again, a great day and night is planned with all proceeds donated to Strabane’s Macmillan nurses,” added Darren. “We thought it was important that all money raised should be spent locally and I think you will agree that the Strabane Macmillan nurses do a fantastic tireless job. I don’t think there’s a family in Strabane that has not seen that for themselves in some way or another. We have to help worthy causes like this, as they are not a government funded organisation. So our thinking was why not do the right thing and have a great memorable day’s craic in the process.”

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to 18 year old up and coming musician, Darren Roulston. Where in Strabane did you grow up? I grew up originally in the Ballycolman Estate but then moved up to Altiskane on the Glen Road.
A fond childhood memory? A fond childhood memory would have to be performing in the church along with our primary school choir.
A Favourite holiday destination?
Favourite kind of music?
Something you love about Strabane?
My favourite kind of music would have to be the music I grew up listening and singing along to, such as gospel, Irish and country music.
My favourite place in Strabane would have to be our local theatre, the Alley, which has a great selection of national entertainment and variety of shows
Favourite food?
Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future?
I don’t really have a favourite type of food but it would always contain a balance of carbs, protein and vegetables.
Our favourite holiday destination when we were younger was going to Blackpool on the boat. We used to sail across there every holiday, which was always a great excitement.
An ideal night out?
A favourite film and why?
An ideal night in?
An ideal night out for me would have to be a few pints of Guinness and a bit of music with humour and fun.
My favourite film growing up would have to An ideal night in would be listening to my be ‘Rocky Balboa’ as it’s so motivating and favourite kinds of music, and also studying uplifting to watch. and practicing music.
Something I’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future would be more people visiting the town and more attractions for our people.
Someone who makes you proud to be from Strabane and why?
Someone who makes me proud to be from Strabane would be a guy called Jordan Devine, who has a song called ‘Me Subway Carerra’. If he gets any musical ideas to further his career he will always share them with everyone. Check out Darren’s current song ‘Erin’ on Youtube.

Strabane’s Best Kept Secret It’s an Open Mic night at the Alley Bar in Strabane, and Lauren Bird takes to the stage. She immediately apologises to the audience because they may not know any of the songs she’s about to play, on account of them all being her own. Such modest apologies are unnecessary; in fact, many in the audience thrive on hearing local artists showcasing their own material, so it’s a welcomed, if sadly rare, treat.
By Michael Ferry
Thirty minutes of charming, quirky, engaging ukulele based songs follow. The witty and often personal lyrics sail on sunny melodies that confidently spread colour on each song. While she still remains relatively unknown as a singer in her hometown of Strabane, it’s clear by this performance why others are tuning into Lauren Bird. She recently secured a spot at the forthcoming Stendhal Festival at Ballmully Cottage Farm in Limavady after winning Chordblossom’s Kickstart competition, which also gave her the opportunity to make a video and record a single, which is set to be released this month. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ following her performance at the Open Mic, the 23-year-old music graduate is quick to praise the event itself. “I don’t really connect with cover songs, and prefer doing my own stuff. Strabane is coming down with people writing fantastic music but there are few outlets for them to showcase it, which is why things like this Open Mic night are very important,” she stresses.
Guitar Teacher A guitar teacher by day, Lauren (real surname McGeough, which she jokes is just too hard for people outside of Strabane to pronounce) started learning guitar aged ten, under the tutelage of the late Hughie Blee. Her first forays into songwriting were at the age of 13, with all that goes with it. “When you’re 13 you’re thinking about everything, and the stuff I wrote had that ‘world’s gonna end’ EMO feel,” she laughs. “As I developed as a musician I kept getting repetitive strain injury in my hands because I’m quite small and the guitar and piano kept hurting my hands, so I needed to find an alternative. I then got a £20 ukulele from Henderson’s and it developed from there.”
Strabane’s Lauren Bird
While Lauren was continually writing her own material, she lacked the confidence to play any of it in public. One of her music teachers in Belfast helped her to overcome this. “She was a voice teacher and could tell that I had no real connection to the cover songs I would sing. She asked if I wrote my own songs and I said that I did but I’d never play them to anybody. She then asked me to come in the following week and play two or three of them. I was absolutely petrified but I did it. She asked why I was not playing these songs out and about and I said, ‘why would anyone what to hear this?’ and she told me that it was good stuff. She then started setting me assignments that included going to and playing at open mic nights,” she explains. With her confidence improving, Lauren’s songwriting continued to be very personal. The autobiographical nature of her songs is predominantly beneficial, she believes. “I play a lot of the songs over and over to the point where they don’t affect me anymore but some songs can have subject matter that’s still very raw. It is personal and people know a bit of your life story by the end of it but if I was to go up there and play someone else’s songs I wouldn’t have that same connection, so I prefer to do it this way as it helps me,” she says. We wondered if she could envisage a time when she’ll be less in the centre of her songwriting. “Honesty, I’ve tried to be less about me and more metaphorical but I’m just not smart enough,” she laughs. “Some of the songs may be slightly coded yes, but overall there is a great sense of closure in writing from the heart and other people can identify with those songs as well. One lady came up to me after a show in Belfast one night. She may have been in her late thirties and she told me that everything I sang that night was how she felt for the last fifteen years! It’s an incredible feeling when someone connects with what you’re singing, but then another part of you thinks ‘oh you poor thing’ because these songs are quite sad.”
graphical she is not particularly interested in being the centre of attention. The photo-shoot and video aspect of her Kickstart prize is of minor significance in comparison to performing at Stendhal. “The festival spot is what drew to me to the Kickstart competition, because I just love performing my songs live. When people go to a festival they love discovering acts they previously hadn’t heard of before, so I’m hoping to be one such act for those people at Stendhal,” she explains. The new single ‘Goodbye, Good Luck’ was previously recorded as part of an EP with help from Éamonn ‘Sticks’ Ó Dochartaigh. Since then, Lauren has developed the song and when the opportunity Kickstart Competition came to record a single, she decided not to opt for While Lauren’s songs are steeped in the autobio- a new song but to lay down her updated vision of
Dylan fans bringing it all online For the best part of half a century, fans of Bob Dylan have engrossed themselves in all things Bob. In the pre-internet days, networking between fans was normally done via the music press classifieds and fanclubs. Bootlegs, books, memorabilia and various other forms of Dylan related items were collected via post and record stores with sections of Dylan material that, let’s just say, didn’t always have the Columbia Records logo on it; we’ll say no more about that! Such fandom is not exclusive to Dylan, of course, but that it still, like Dylan himself, endures to this day is fascinating. The Dylan fan community has been drawn closer in
the age of the Internet, and access to clips, videos and bootlegs that once required weeks of planning now simply requires the push of a button. It’s certainly a major eye-opener for the more seasoned Dylan fan who was there in the 60s when he caused a storm when he decided to “play it f****** loud!” A gathering of Dylan fans in the North West have now established a Bob Dylan page on Facebook, where fans can share videos, songs and articles and also instigate various Bob related discussions. ‘Together Through Life: Bob Dylan Fan Page’ is gathering strength by the day, with fans not just from the North West but across the globe joining the page and getting involved. With 2015, and indeed 2016, mark-
ing many significant 50th anniversaries in relation to Dylan, such as the recording of seminal works like ‘Highway 61 Revisited’, ‘Bringing It All Back Home’ and ‘Blonde On Blonde’ there is certainly plenty to chew on for the next few years. With the annual DylanFest taking place in Moville on August 27 to August 30 the page can also be a useful companion to anyone who will be attending. There are also plans for a Dylan night in Strabane, where artists inspired by the man himself will play a mix of their own stuff and some of their favourite Dylan tunes. So, if you’re a Bob fan who’d like to mix it online with fellow ‘Bobcats’, get searching on Facebook for ‘Together Through Life: Bob Dylan Fan Page’ now.
‘Goodbye, Good Luck’. “I always thought it was a song that would work on the radio and sit well in a video. It tells a good story as well. So, we recorded it in Millbank Studios in Lisburn with James Lyttle and Michael Mormecha and that was so much fun. There’s a double bass and a clap-track added. I think it sounds really good and by this stage I just can’t wait to release it,” she smiles. So, with a festival slot and a new single that will be guaranteed airplay on the local airwaves on the way, Lauren Bird won’t be Strabane’s best kept secret for much longer. For more information on her, check out her website: http://laurenbirdmusic.com. She performs at the Stendhal Festival on August 8.

Have you heard of ‘Grounding’? ...write your own story!
Workshops & Seminars
Recently I have been doing some research on ‘Grounding’ or ‘Earthing’ and have been amazed at the results. According to Wikipedia Grounding,‘ is the process of removing the excess charge on an object by means of the transfer of electrons between it and another object of substantial size. When a charged object is grounded, the excess charge is balanced by the transfer of electrons between the charged object and a ground’.
Now what has all that to do with anything?
For further information on dates and venues contact:

www.tomherronexperience.com
Actually ‘grounding’ is very beneficial for our health and wellbeing. The much sought after cardiologist Dr Stephen Sinatra has this to say about ‘Grounding’. ‘The Earth’s surface contains a limitless number of free electrons that are continually replenished through solar radiation and lightning strikes; your body naturally absorbs these particles when you make physical contact with the ground. In the body, these electrons have an anti-inflammatory effect because they reduce the free-radical activity that causes inflammation and chronic pain. (If you remember your high school science, electrons are negatively charged. Inflammation-causing free radicals are positively charged, which means the additional free electrons neutralize the free radicals.) The energy of the free electrons gained through grounding also helps keep your body’s innate electrical circuitry properly balanced. All of these effects of grounding
are extremely beneficial to heart health. Without a regular connection to the Earth, people can develop what I call an electron deficiency. In turn, this can lead to imbalances in the body and potentially to significant health problems. For example, chronic inflammation—which is increasingly being identified as the cause of many chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and autoimmune disorders—may be a result of a lack of connectedness’.
Isn’t that interesting? So how does one ground oneself? The simplest way to do it is to take off your socks and shoes and walk on the ground in your bare feet. I find grass wet with dew early in the morning particularly effective. It seems the earth just pulls away the negative energy that has accumulated throughout the night and replaces it with positive electrons.
4
It makes me feel good and it is a really useful way to reduce anxiety and change a foul mood. I have found that it makes me so calm and relaxed each and every time. I like to ground myself at least once a day and I find the static electricity that used to ‘give me shocks’ from the car door, for example is totally a thing of the past. If I have to think about something important I find the best place to do this is walking on the lawn early in the morning and everything seems so clear and straightforward. It gives me the resources to deal with whatever life delivers during the day and it is such a simple yet effective remedy for ‘bad moods’. I cannot recommend ‘grounding’ highly enough. Do your own research and have a go. It definitely does ‘what it says on the tin’ and so much more. Until the next time. Tom Herron

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE BALOR ARTS CENTRE
Fantastic Summer Entertainment at the Balor! This August here’s great music from the US and Canada coming up at The Balor Arts Centre, Ballybofey in the shape of of Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys and Viper Central.
Antonia and her neighbours are desperate: with the cost of living spiralling they’re struggling to feed their families. When their local supermarket puts up the prices yet again the women snap. A mutiny kicks off, the shelves are cleared and freezers emptied in a joyous protest against the market forces that are keeping them impoverished. This Donegal treatment of the classic Dario Fo Italian political comedy farce is as fiercely provocative as it is funny and still incredibly relevant today.

Strabane man Brian Hassan was at the iconic concert at Wembley Stadium in 1985
Live Aid at 30 Remembered By Michael Ferry
It was billed as the “global jukebox”, with a line-up consisting of the biggest names in rock and pop at the time, and was watched by an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion across 150 nations. On July 13 just past, Live Aid was 30 years old. While most of us who can remember that day have our own memories of where we were, some were fortunate enough to have actually been there in attendance at Wembley Stadium, or indeed its sister concert at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Strabane singer-songwriter Brian Hassan was at the Wembley concert and still has some precious memorabilia from the day in his possession. To mark 30 years of Live Aid, the ‘Strabane Herald’ caught up with Brian to get some of his memories from July 13, 1985. The concerts were follow-on from the Band Aid charity single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, which topped the charts the previous Christmas. A BBC news report by Michael Buerk on the 1984 famine in Ethiopia (“the closest thing to hell on earth”) sparked Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof into action. In collaboration with Midge Ure from Ultravox he wrote a song in the hope of raising money for famine relief. With his own unique style of persuasion Geldof was able to get many of the top names in music at the time to appear on the record. Geldof’s initial vision was a small one: to raise about 70 grand. However, ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ became the fastest-selling single ever in Britain and raised £8 million. Into 1985 and Geldof could see that while £8 million was a huge amount of money, it wouldn’t be enough. Live Aid was soon devised with major help from promoters Harvey Goldsmith and Bill Graham: the latter dealing with the Philadelphia concert. U2, Queen, Status Quo, Sting, David Bowie, Dire Straits and Paul McCartney were to be among the names set to play at the Wembley concert. When Brian Hassan heard about the gig only a handful of acts were announced, but as he tells us, he had already decided that this was going to be something special. “I only heard about a few of the acts but that didn’t really make any difference to me. As far as I was concerned this was going to be the concert of the decade and simply something I just had to go to,” he recalls.
No Politics! Brian purchased his ticket in Derry and it was a package deal that included a coach from Derry to Belfast, the ferry across to Stranraer and a coach down to Wembley. He was the only person from Strabane in his travel party and the journey to England proved to stand in sharp contrast to day to day life back home in 1985.
Strabane musician Brian Hassan who was at Wembley in 1985 for ‘Live Aid’. Other photos on the page show the original ticket and the original memorabilia he collected on the day.
“I didn’t know anybody else from Strabane that was going, although I found out afterwards that there were a few from the town there. The bus from Derry to Belfast was jovial and friendly. When we made it to Belfast I got chatting to three lads who jumped on from there. When we were on the ferry I soon discovered that one of them was from the Shankill Road and the other two were off-duty policemen. I told them that I was from Strabane and we all agreed that this weekend was to be all about music and no politics, which is exactly how it went down,” Brian remembers.
Something Special The anticipation that something special was about to take place was evident even before Status Quo opened the show, according to Brian. “There was a special atmosphere within the stadium early on. It was one of the first outdoor concerts I attended that had a bar in the actual ground; in fact we were 10 to 15 yards away from one, which we thought was very convenient as we could still see the stage, the screens, the celebrity boxes, and still get a drink when we wanted,” he laughs. “If you remember that day in question,” Brian continues, “it was really hot. I arrived in jeans and t-shirt but had to go into a sports shop to look for a pair of football shorts. Unfortunately for me they only had tennis shorts left,
so for the first and only time in my life I walked around in tennis shorts!” In the midday heat of Wembley Stadium, Radio DJ Richard Skinner made the now famous announcement: “It’s twelve noon in London, seven AM in Philadelphia, and around the world it’s time for Live Aid ....” Status Quo kicked things off and, as Brian tells it, they were the perfect start to proceedings. “It was the perfect choice of song to kick things off with. Status Quo doing ‘Rockin’ All over the World’ set the tone and the place erupted straight away. The momentum never dulled for the entire gig, even when acts who were on the bill because they had some brief popularity at that time, like Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones took to the stage,” he remembers. So who stood out for Brian on the day? “Obviously, it’s now well noted that Queen were exceptional on the day. U2 were another highlight. As a young up and coming Irish band at the time they thought they’d blown it on the day because Bono disappeared from the stage, down to crowd and the lads in the band couldn’t see him. But for me, because of the music I was into at the time, Sting along with saxophonist Branford Marsalis doing ‘Roxanne’ and a few other Police hits was unbelievable. But the atmosphere the whole day was just amazing. One minute you’re watching the easy listening Sade and the next you’re watching David Bowie. Even when Paul McCartney’s microphone didn’t work it made no difference to the crowd: they were just up for it all day long. In many ways, you could say it was the Woodstock of the 1980s. There was no trouble and everybody was in it together,” explains Brian. While the success of the artists who participated in Live Aid could be easily
observed after the concert, the success of the aid in question, which was estimated to be in the region of £150 million, has been open to debate in the 30 years since. It may have even given rise to a form of celebrity activism that now leaves a sour taste, but for those in attendance 30 years ago it was simply an opportunity give a little and see some of the biggest acts on the planet in the process: a global momentary sense of giving in the middle of a decade supposedly steeped in a ‘Me’ culture, some might argue. While at lot of concert merchandise never lasts the distance down the years, Brian still has his ticket, programme and t-shirt from Live Aid, but we wondered if it now felt like 30 years ago for him. “I can still place myself back in the stadium that day. I can still feel the heat and sense the atmosphere and excitement when each act came on. I had been to some big outdoor events before that, like U2 headlining Phoenix Park in 1983. The bill that particular day included Simple Minds, Eurythmics, Steel Pulse, Perfect Crime, Big Country, and while it was a fantastic day it still didn’t mean the same as Live Aid. Even the next day, despite being exhausted, the buzz continued on the bus back to Stranraer and the journey home. The whole thing just felt like a global party, that’s the best way to describe it!” he concludes.

Dergview FC 0 -v- 2 Strabane Athletic Strabane Athletic achieved a morale boosting victory in a friendly against Dergview FC at Darragh Park last Saturday. The game was another opportunity for Strabane manager Paddy Foy to get a look at all his squad players ahead of the new season. Athletic can take encouragement from this performance against high ranking opposition. With end to end action in the 1st half, Dergview keeper Jack Boggs was called upon to make a few interceptions. A glorious Dergview chance was then headed wide before Strabane keeper Dylan Early superbly turned
a low shot away for a corner in the 27th minute. Jordan Duffy converted Sean Ferry’s brilliant cross field pass to give Strabane the lead at the interval. As expected Dergview pressed hard after the interval but the Strabane rearguard held firm as Conor Carlin made it two with 15 minutes remaining. The League Cup competition starts on August 15th and Strabane Athletic travel to play neighbours Ardstraw United. The following week August 22nd, Athletic are at home to Killmore Recreation from Co. Down in the first round of this year’s Irish Cup.
