The doors of Strabane night club Rubys re-opened in style on Saturday night, November 29, following its sudden closure in October. The shutters came down on Rubys less than a year after it opened, leaving forty bar and door staff in limbo, having to be temporarily let go along with a further 12 employees in the kitchen and food department. However, ‘on-going technical issues with the local council’ have since been resolved just in time for the festive season, much to the relief of the management sta and indeed the punters who filled the impressive venue on it’s re-opening, packing out the Live Lounge, the Little Disco and the Night Club, where top DJs Judge Jules and DJ Fergal rc slammed out the oor filling beats See photos of Rubys re-opening on P30 The crowd outside Rubys Nightclub on Saturday night.

HERALD CHRISTMAS VOX POP There will be no shortage of films on the television this Christmas! Which film do you look forward to seeing at this time of the year? The Strabane Herald this week took to the streets of Strabane to ask some locals about their favourite festive movie!
Santa Claus the Movie (1985)
White Christmas (1954)
“I love watching ‘Santa Claus - The Movie’. I just love the Elves and it has the most original Santa. When you close your eyes and imagine Santa, he’s the one that comes to mind. John Lithgow is the perfect pantomime villain as well.” Aileen Farrell
“I always associate Christmas with Bing Crosby singing ‘White Christmas’ and the film ‘Holiday Inn’. If I was to sit down and watch a film at Christmas that would be it. And Bing is my kind of singer, too.”
“For me, it’s not Christmas until I’ve seen ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’. It’s a bit of a festive classic now. Definitely one of Chevy Chase’s best. It still makes me laugh every time.”
John O’Neill

McElhinney’s Ballybofey is Ireland’s No.1 Retail Website! Retail Excellence Ireland recently announced the winners of the 2014 Retail Excellence Ireland Awards in association with Barclaycard at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway. One of the big winners on the night was McElhinneys Department Store, winning the award for eCommerce Website of the Year 2015 for www.mcelhinneys. com. Launched in November 2012, McElhinneys are leading the way digitally with their progressive and seamless approach to online. The website gives users an opportunity to shop the great product selection whilst delivering the exceptional customer service which we have all come love from the family owned store. Collecting the award, Marketing and eCommerce Manager, Roisin Woods said “We are all ecstatic to have won this award, we have immersed ourselves completely over the last few years in designing, developing and growing both websites, www.mcelhinneys.com and www.mcelhinneysbridalrooms.com. The judging process was very intensive, with the judges looking at every aspect of our digital strategy, so winning this award is a real testament to everyone’s hard work. Since going online it has been the most amazing journey from winning Best Bridal Website in 2013 and representing

New book about County Tyrone set to enthral local history enthusiasts A new book is set to be on the Christmas list for those with an interest in County Tyrone and its history. ‘The Little Book of Tyrone’ is a compendium of fascinating, obscure and entertaining facts about the muchloved county. It was written by Cathal Coyle, who has lived and worked in County Tyrone all his life. He is a librarian based in St. Patrick’s College, Dungannon, and has a particular interest in local history, culture and folklore. The book is published as part of the popular ‘Little Book of...’ series by the History Press and it is illustrated with thirty original line drawings. Enjoying a great night at Dance Kraze 3 recently in the Den, Strabane in which they raised a whopping £5000 - Well done!

The effect of acupuncture during Pregnancy/IVY and labour Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

ew reative hop’ calls on the local community to get involved A new innovative Creative Shop has opened in Strabane. It is the latest phase of Big Telly Theatre Company’s work with local authorities across Northern Ireland to re-animate empty retail units into creative spaces to inspire and engage local communities. With thanks to funding from the Esmee Fairburn Foundation, Big Telly plans to open three new ‘creative shops’ per year over the next three years – so far Portstewart, Ballycastle and now Strabane have embraced the ‘Creative Shop’ craze. The latest unit to be transformed is on Railway Street, Strabane, and will remain there until January 17. The ‘Herald’ visited the new ‘Creative Shop’ last week and spoke to Creative Director, Alice Malseed about the exciting project. “This is part of a Northern Ireland-wide project that aims to place the arts at the heart of daily life and add to the energy and trade in town centres. We hope to fill this space with as many creative, cultural and artistic community projects as possible,” she explained.
the local LGBT group have been in touch to do a craft evening and we also have some fantastic local poets coming on board. There have been some animation classes as well. Essentially, I’m trying to draw on people’s interests and push them a bit further,” she outlined. The Importance of Travel Insurance What you need to know? You wouldn’t go on holiday without your tickets or passports but alarmingly 22% of people now travel abroad without insurance. Purchasing an adequate travel insurance policy for both ourselves and in the case of dependents, those we are travelling with, can be the most important purchase we make when travelling away from home. You need to ask yourself what happens if you fall in when you are overseas and need medical treatment? Or perhaps who have to cancel your holiday as a member of your family has been taken into hospital. What if your airline goes bust and you can’t reach your destination? Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats Every month, the Herald speaks to a local son or daughter, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond where they grew up we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for home and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Laura M asterson. When did you leave Strabane and to EVERYBODY would say hello which was completely new to us. Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future? I’d like to see the town thriving economically....more businesses investing in the town and more jobs being created. Following the USA’s exploits in Brazil this summer at the World Cup and given the gradual rise of their MLS league, the ‘Herald’ asked Strabane man, Paul Gallagher, currently living and coaching soccer in North Carolina, to keep us up to date on how a nation famously indifferent to ‘the beautiful game’ has now seemingly embraced it. This month Paul observes the aftermath over there following the recent friendly international between Republic of Ireland and U.S.A. in Dublin.
Happy Thanksgiving Y’all Happy Thanksgiving Y’all - something I heard a lot on Thursday past. Thanksgiving is an American holiday usually on the last Thursday of November when friends and family get together to give thanks to America’s first ancestors. Asides from the history side of things it’s very similar to Christmas with everyone eating big turkey dinners and passing out in front of the TV. Unfortunately, this holiday has no gifts! But I say all of this because this week I want to give thanks to the Ireland National team. After their terrific thumping of the United States I could breath a little easier while dishing out some banter to my American friends at the same time. When I came here in 2008 I really didn’t know what to expect. Would my team be any good? What do Americans know about soccer? Do they even like the sport? Yes, a lot more than I thought and yes would be the answer to those 3 questions. I found this all out in a matter of days. My team consisted of nationalities from all around the world including Irish, English, Cameroonian, and Brazilian and everyone thought their coun-

try was the best at soccer. After everyone decided Brazil was the best the rest of the list changed from week to week. But one thing that remained constant was that the USA were on the bottom. That was up until the World Cup in 2010. Aside from the Ireland games in the 2002 World Cup, the England v USA game in 2010 is probably my most memorable World Cup game. The game itself wasn’t great, a boring 1-1 draw, but the craic between my English friends and every American person we met was priceless. The Americans even started a conga line in the bar we were in when Robert Green made that howler and danced in between my dis-
appointed and deflated English friends. From that day forward we all took the U.S. a little more serious from a soccer standpoint. The only downfall from that day was that Ireland now moved to the bottom of the list and despite all of my arguing that is where they stayed. That was up until Tuesday afternoon. Even with a 2nd string team (America also had a weakened team according to my American friends) we taught the Strabane’s Paul Gallagher (right) is currently coaching soccer in North Carolina, USA. Christmas Dinner About two years ago I met a young man called Ray who had a brother died by suicide some time before that. Naturally Ray and his whole family were devastated and were doing their best to come to terms with their grief and loss. During this time Ray was feeling rather helpless and did not know what to do regarding his own feelings around the death of his brother so he decided he needed some help and sought the aid of a charity called PIPS Newcastle and District (Public Initiative for the Prevention or Suicide and Self-harm). Through PIPS Ray and his family soon became aware of just how many had died by suicide in his area and were suffering similar loss. Ray realised that when one felt helpless the thing to do was to help someone else. He thus began actively seeking out other people who had suffered similar loss and went and spoke with them. Very quickly he found there was a great need for further counselling and soothing therapies in his area and along with his sister they established their own charity and name it Mind Your Mate and Yourself (MYMy). MyMy can be reached via the Facebook page bearing the name Mind Your Mate and Yourself and currently offers counselling services and a drop in centre in Newcastle County Down.
In such a short time the charity has grown from strength to strength and last Christmas the committee decided to have a Christmas Dinner for those who happened to be on their own on Christmas day. The offer was open to anyone from anywhere who chose to attend the Kilmegan Centre in Castlewellan County Down. If people needed transport volunteers were available to ferry them to the centre and in total on Christmas day last year the MyMy was able to provide almost 200 dinners for people who otherwise would have been on their own. It was a fabulous success and it was decided if possible to make it an annual event. I was honoured to be part of the event last year and part of my role was to collect an elderly lady from Lisburn and take her to the event. Ray provided me with the lady’s details and I called her beforehand and arranged to collect her at a particular time so we could make it to Castlewellan before the event started. When she answered the phone I explained who I was, asked her for direc-

tions to her home, which I followed, and soon arrived at her door. I entered a very tall block of apartments and headed for the thirteenth floor where the lady had directed me. I rapped the appropriate door and this very jolly articulate lady answered invited me in whilst she checked things before we left and we then took the lift down thirteen floors. She informed me she was thirty six years in the apartment on the thirteenth floor and loved living there. She said she had no lawn to cut and had a garden of window boxes which she kept beautifully. I asked her if she minded telling me her age and
she proudly announced she was ninety three years old. She was so delighted to have somewhere to go on Christmas day and when we arrived at the Kilmegan Centre Castlewellan she found the whole atmosphere so friendly and welcoming. We had a ball and it was such a wonderful way to spend Christmas day. It is certainly one I will always remember and I hope I have the pleasure again of having the company of the lady from Lisburn at MyMy’s Christmas day dinner this year again. Until the next time Tom Herron

So, what are you doing with yourself now? Really? Well that’s just super!” To which you reply, “Are they all like you over there? I think I’ll chance my arm right here. Still you struggle on in the direction of your home unsuccessfully attempting to stop every taxi going by. As you reach the bottom of the hill that’s two minutes from your house a taxi pulls up beside you. You jump in. Thirty seconds later you’re home. “That’ll be £10, mate and a happy new year!”
The Christmas Compilation: There has only ever been one great Christmas song and it’s ‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues and the late great Kirsty MacColl. Everything else was and is crap. Still all stores dig out the same old Christmas compilation album every year. So it would be best to begrudgingly get ready for the age-old familiar chimes of Roy Wood of Wizard, Noddy Holder of Slade, that guy from Mud or any other World of Sport wrestler who passed for a pop star in the ’70s. The latter three men are a physical reminder of a time when pop did not discriminate. The ladies of the ‘noughties’ have Justin Timberlake, Robbie and countless boy band types like One Direction blandly colouring their festive charts. Yet it’s still worth sparing a thought for the ladies of the ’70s. Along with the grimness of a three-day week, at Christmas they had Mud!
‘Happy New Year’ when in truth we probably wish them anything but. There is always someone who lets the alcohol and sentiment take over from their more intuitive instincts. There may be someone present who you have fallen out with. After months of blanking them, you go over and offer a handshake and the possibility of a ‘fresh start’.
It’s a shocking sell-out brought on by booze, the placement of January in a calendar year and a lifetime of listening to vacuous New Year speeches about ‘love, peace and harmony’. The hangover on January 1 hurts as much as it does any other time his ground, tells her what he really thinks of her, of the year. It is at this point where you groan “ah starts to slur and sing ‘I’m as free as a bird and this bxxxxxks” and rightly so. Don’t let the festivities bird you cannot change’. For those few seconds cloud your judgment again you fool!! he’s 17 again. He’s his own man; a rebel with a cause with the world is his oyster. He’s born to Christmas is a period that is removed from the be wild. She steps out to the street with a brush realities of the rest of the year. With that in mind, I and proceeds to brush and beat him towards the hope your passage into the realities of January will door he door slams shut silhouetted figure o a be smooth and that nothing you get up to over the female can be seen motioning up and down with a next few weeks will make it awkward. Actually, brush. For another 364 days at least the revolution I’m lying. Where’s the fun in being good? Get out there and embarrass yourself. Become the talk of is, once again, stopped in its tracks. the street the o fice and the pub ord nows an uary is a dark cold month. We’ll need something to The New Year countdown occupy ourselves, it may as well be you. Just avoid hose first ew minutes a ter the ew ear count the hospital or jail and this should be a very happy down are a shocking display of sentiment and and special Christmas for you all. One last thing wishful thinking. We are all guilty of shaking if Roy Wood had his way he'd wish everyday could hands or hugging people we hate. We wish them a be like all of the above. Imagine that!
Over-eating and over-drinking Between the booze and the grub, Christmas is one big exercise in gluttony. Unlike any other time of the year caution is cast aside. The phrase ‘I really shouldn’t is never heard like it is, say, at a summer barbe ue t Christ mas we become walking wheelie bins. A new year just around the corner gives us the security that January will see our festive excesses put to rights. Yet with buckets of the depressant alcohol consumed in the last week of December the beginning of January tends to be uite a morose period hile the boo ing ma cease, the eating continues as we tearfully munch into the hard sweets left over in the Quality Street tins, while watching the annual funerals of all who got run over outside the pub on Christmas night in Eastenders. You will also ponder on how small the box of Quality Street has actually become and this may bring on the tears again.
The drunken neighbour
Everyone has a neighbour who lets off steam one day a year and it’s always around Christmas time. ll ear long he s uiet mannerl o ten re erred to as ‘a civil critter’ and never passes without a friendly ‘hello’. Yet one day before Christmas he and his work mates may go for a few festive pints in celebration of being off work for a few days. ne leads to fi e a ter ten the shots start n the early hours of the morning you’re awoken with his out of tune warbling as he crawls over the street with a takeaway. His domineering wife stands at the door shouting at him to come in and stop The office Christmas Party: The shenagenans at these events have been well making a public show of himself. Normally subdocumented. Why is it always the person with a missive to his wife’s every demand, this is the one backside the size of China who is hell-bent on pho- night of the year a revolution takes root. He stands
