The local online station will be on air live from 1.30pm, providing an ideal opportunity for all Strabane Ex-Pats to soak up all the fun of the day. Tommy Forbes will be presenting the show and lots of music and special guests are guaranteed. To get Valentine’s Day may have passed but it’s never too late for romance to blossom. your request read out on the day simply go onto The Everglades hotel in Derry has kindly agreed to play host to a speed-dating www.strabaneradio.com, click on the ‘request’ event for the 25-45 age group, which will occur on Friday, March 7, commencing icon and take it from there.
at 7pm.
This event is advance bookings via telephone only, so it is a case of first come, first served, as availability is limited to a maximum of fifty people. The event is being organised by a new company, First Impressions. Its Events Organiser, Gary Watton, has considerable experience of speed-dating events, having participated in many such occasions in both Belfast and London. His ‘mission’ is to bring such events to new locations, and it is fair to say that speed-dating events have been a bit thin on the ground in the North West. “There are many young singles in the surrounding areas who would like the opportunity to try out this novel means of engaging with new people. Speed-dating involves a series of five minute ‘minidates’ with about fifteen or twenty members of the opposite sex. There is ample scope to make a connection and build a rapport with a few individuals, and the very worst that can happen is that each participant at least has a number of interesting conver-
sations with some new people,” explained Gary. He continued, “Speed-dating is intended as a refreshing alternative to dating online where two complete strangers exchange messages, but which is a limited means of interaction, as only a face-to-face meeting can give each person a more fuller picture of the other’s personality, body language, and image. Therefore, speed-dating is something of an improvement upon this ‘virtual dating’ scenario. Furthermore, many twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings eventually grow tired of noisy night clubs that perhaps appeal more to young folk in their late teens and early twenties. Therefore, a speed-dating event represents a unique opportunity to talk to a variety of different people, without having to scream above loud background noise.” If anyone wishes to take up the challenge of this forthcoming Everglades speed-dating event, then call First Impressions on 07527 676709 or visit their website at http://firstimpressionsdating.blog.com

Strabane District’s Regeneration Plans Move Forward Strabane District Council has confirmed that plans to invest an estimated £3,500,000 in regeneration projects between now and March 2015 are going ahead. The overall funding involves contributions by the Department for Social Development, the Department of the Environment, and the Council itself. Key areas for investment include the Strabane Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge and various shop front and dereliction revitalisation projects. Speaking in relation to the progress of the regeneration plans Strabane District Council Chairman Ruairí McHugh said: “These regeneration projects are vitally important for the progression and development of Strabane town and the district. They will provide high quality infrastructure and environmental enhancements leading the way for future economic and social regeneration within the area.” Recent developments in relation to the planned regeneration works have included the progression of the procurement process for the Strabane Pedestrian Bridge. In late autumn 2013, a pre-project qualification exercise was undertaken to identify companies with the necessary experience to tender for the construction contract. Tenders have now been invited from the select list of contractors, with the contract due to be awarded by the end of March 2014. The successful contractor will be required to deliver the bridge by March 2015. Furthermore, plans to develop a safe cycling route linked to the Strabane Pedestrian Bridge have also been put forward. These projects will be funded in partnership with the Department for Social Development and the Department of Regional Development Active Travel. Speaking in relation to the regeneration plans the Chair of the Strabane Town Forum, Councillor Brian McMahon stated: “We have been consulted widely

across the community in relation to these regeneration projects and collectively examined the type of initiatives which have the ability to revitalise the area and attract people to use the town. The Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge in particular will improve access to facilities and services, including the town centre and Melvin sports complex which is currently being upgraded.” Strabane District Council also plans to unveil a £400,000 Revitalisation Scheme for shop front improvements funded by the Department for Social Development, which will be available during 2014. A further £200,000 of Department of the Environment funding will be used to address dereliction across the district with works to be complete by March 2014. Consultation has also commenced regarding the design for the planned public realm upgrade of Abercorn Square, Leapers Brae, Railway Road, Castle Street and Market Street. To date progress in relation to this has included the appointment of RPS Consultants to undertake the concept design and business case to support a further approximately £2m public realm upgrade to include resurfacing of pavements, street furniture, tree planting and public art.

Green Shoots for local property market
£5 Million Boost to Strabane Construction Sector The Riverside Building & Development Group, the promoters behind the landmark ‘Three Rivers’ project, is pleased to confirm the launch of a new housing scheme at Glen Road, Strabane. Construction is already well under way on the new 46 unit ‘Glenview Manor’ site with the first homes expected to be ready for occupation by April of this year. The scheme is the largest private housing development to be undertaken in Strabane since the onset of the credit crunch of 2007 and is a sign of a restoration of confidence in the local property market. It should be welcome relief to the area’s beleaguered construction sector which has been devastated by the collapse in bank lending and development activity over the last 7 years. Building workers, suppliers and professionals have had to endure severe shortages of work with many well-known businesses in the North West being forced into making large redundancies or liquidating altogether. Professional research has shown that every £1 spent on construction generates almost £3 in total economic activity. For that reason the £5 million invested in development of these new houses will have a much greater impact, benefitting many others in the local construction supply chain. While no-one is pretending that the recession is over for the North
West building community this substantial investment is nevertheless a signal that stability may be returning. This is a major local residential housing scheme designed with ‘affordable quality’ at the core of what is being offered. At a time when government spending is being ruthlessly reduced and household bills continue to spiral, people are being forced to examine every aspect of their
lifestyles to see where savings can be made. The cost of purchasing and maintaining a home is the biggest financial commitment many people will make in their lifetimes. ‘Glenview Manor’ is targeted at those who want to get exceptional value for their money while leaving enough of their budgets for the other things they need and want to do in their lives.

As part of Northern Ireland Electricity’s (NIE) ‘Preparing for Winter’ campaign Strabane Councillor Patsy Kelly joined other Councillors in a visit to the NIE Ballymena location to understand how the company deals with power cuts and plans for emergencies.
During the visit Patsy Kelly saw how Ballymena operates as a Local Incident Centre during severe weather and had the opportunity to visit the Apprentice school that specialises in training overhead lines apprentices. Natasha Nicholl, Customer Relations Manager, welcomed the visit and said: “We appreciate Councillors taking the time to visit our location in Campsie and to understand how we plan and deal with power cuts and other customers on a daily basis and during severe weather. “Elected representatives help us to distribute information to their constituents so it is important that they are aware of how we work and some of the
programmes that we have in place such as our critical care register for people who rely on electricity for their health care needs.” Raymond McMenemy, Training Manager at NIE, took the Councillors on a tour of the training facilities. He said: “At NIE we place a huge importance on apprenticeships in order to replenish the work pool, improve the efficiency of the business and, more recently, help meet renewable energy targets.” Raymond adds: “Today’s visit was a great opportunity to show local Councillors the facilities we have in place for training our apprentices. Our training facilities provide our apprentices with electricity equipment such as erected poles, underground cables, switchgear and meter boards so as they can practise and develop their skills on equipment similar to what they would find on our live network.” The NIE apprenticeship recruitment programme will open at the end of February. For more information on preparing for winter and the NIE apprenticeship visit nie.co.uk.

West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has begun an intensive period of lobbying in order for a dedicated Autistic Sensory Unit to be based in the Strabane District.
room Assistant. Calum continued his education at Primary Four. Unfortunately this year had been very tough for him. With the demands he faced, his traits became hard to manage in such a large environment, which led us to seek alternative options to manage his needs.
MLA highlights the need for an ASD Unit in the Strabane District
A freedom of information request has been issued by Mrs Boyle, asking how many children over the course of the last six months and year have been diagnosed under the ADHD and autism spectrum. She has also been working closely with a local family whose child recently started to attend St Brigid’s ASD unit in Carnhill, Derry.
Dedicated Unit Speaking to the Strabane Herald, Mrs Boyle said, “We believe, the parents believe and the teachers and the principals believe that the statistics stack up that we do have an increasing number of children locally who would require a dedicated unit, so there should be one established in the Strabane District area to serve the needs of these children.
At the end of the day, the children in the Strabane area are losing out if we don’t have this unit. I have written to the Minister for Education and also to the Minister for Health to lobby them on having an ASD unit in Strabane. Regardless of where that unit will be based, it would be open to any child from any school across the Strabane District community that requires it.” In late 2012, the Strabane Herald spoke to local couple Kieran and Ann-Marie McColgan, who learned earlier that year that their son Calum, who was six years-old at the time, was diagnosed Asperger’s syndrome. The couple discussed how greatly indebted they were to the Strabane and Castlederg Autism Group, which is a registered branch of Autism NI, and how the group has been
We had two options which were located in Derry and Enniskillen respectively. These ASD units are attached to mainstream schools which provide a service for children with autism to continue with the mainstream curriculum. So, after the first few weeks at St Brigid’s ASD unit in Carnhill he has settled very well and he was recently named pupil of the week. We hope he can continue to develop his education and fulfil the potential we know he has. I would hope in the coming years that we, the people of Strabane, are able to boast such a facility in our own town. It is definitely needed,” concluded Kieran.

a great help to them and their children. However, the McColgan family have had to make some big decisions in recent times given the lack of an ASD unit in their local area. “We had the hardest decision as parents to make over the past few

weeks,” said Kieran. “As we are a local family you love to have the facility for your children’s education on your doorstep. Up until Christmas we had that with the support of St Mary’s, especially the hard work and dedication from Linda, our son’s Class-
MLA Michaela Boyle doesn’t believe that funding should be an obstacle in establishing such a unit in the Strabane District. “I wouldn’t accept that funding would be an issue and it’s a matter now of lobbying and hearing back from the Ministers. The numbers justify the need for this facility because autism has a wide spectrum and covers ADHD, Asperger’s and a number of other disabilities. If other areas like Derry and Enniskillen have such a unit in place then why not Strabane given the large numbers that clearly require it?” Mrs Boyle added.

The Cooper Collection: A nationally important photographic record of early twentieth century life in the west of Ulster which owes its provenance to Herbert H Cooper one time proprietor of a modest photographic studio in Strabane. Cooper also opened the Pallidrome Cinema and Concert Hall in Strabane in 1910 (see photo below). Strabane’s Railway Network: Strabane became the largest rail junction in Ireland during the first half of the 20th century, catering for 4 different railway companies. The last train pulled out of Strabane station on the 14th of February 1965.
Background: A large part of Northern Ireland was provided with an Independent Television service in 1959 by the construction of the Black Mountain station near Belfast. Unfortunately, West Ulster was not covered by the Black Mountain facility, and an additional station was needed. A study of the region’s topography revealed that the unserved area could be covered economically by a single station on this site which lies some 274.3 metres (900 feet) above sea level. Today (December 2013) the site broadcasts digital TV and radio to a population of around 34,000.

The Vice Chair of Strabane District Council, Councillor Michelle McMackin, has officially unveiled a commemorative panel to mark the 50th anniversary year of the Strabane transmitting station. Standing just over 1,000 feet (305.5metres ) in height, this remarkable structure has the distinction of being the tallest man-made structure in Irelandbeating notable features such as the Spire in Dublin and Samson- the Harland & Wolff crane in Belfastinto second and third place respectively. Today the transmitter, which is currently owned and operated by Arqiva, broadcasts digital TV and radio to a population of around 34,000. It was originally commissioned by the Independent Television Authority to broadcast TV in black and white to the West of Ulster, and specifically to the geographic areas of Tyrone, Fermanagh and Derry not covered by the construction of the Black Mountain station near Belfast. At the time the provision of the Strabane Transmitter represented an important technological leap forward for the local population of West Ulster. Television broadcasts would transform how the people accessed information on local, national and world events, and enriched lives through entertainment
and educational programming. In its first year of operation, local viewers were able to follow images of the presidential visit of John F Kennedy to Ireland, and his tragic assassination later that year, as well as enjoy the very first broadcast of Dr Who. Speaking at the unveiling event, the Vice Chair of Strabane District Council, Councillor Michelle McMackin underlined the value of the Strabane Transmitter to the local community, saying: “Strabane District Council is fully appreciative of the crucial service provided by Arqiva – owner and operator of the Strabane Transmitter. As a result of their ongoing commitment and investment, a population of some 34,000 persons can today enjoy the benefits of digital TV and radio from the comfort of their homes or while on the move. We look forward to enjoying continued levels of high quality service provision, and working in partnership with Arqiva with the aim of building a progressive and forward looking district of which everyone can be proud.”
NEW!
Rate Struck to Ensure Delivery of Capital Development Plans Strabane District Council has agreed to increase its district rate for the coming year by 2.5%, reflecting its continued commitment to the delivery of its planned investment in community, leisure and recycling facilities during its final year of tenure. NEW!
This means that local ratepayers will see an average increase of £18 in their 2014/15 rates bill, when the regional rate is taken into account. Due to efficiency savings, the rate struck by Strabane District Council is lower than original estimates associated with the delivery of the four year investment plan launched in 2012. However, the progressive investment programme valued at almost £20million remains on target for delivery. Progress to date includes the reopening of the Derg Valley Leisure Centre following a £600,000 refurbishment and the ongoing £2 million improvements at Melvin Park Sports Complex.
The rate increase goes towards projects such as the refurbished Melvin Sports Centre.
also play a key function in rolling out future sports facilities development plans including developing plans for a new Leisure Centre.
The development of the new £4 million waste transfer station and recycling centre in Strabane town is also well advanced with the facility due to open before the end of 2014. Plans for £3.2 million Strabane Pedestrian Bridge have also been progressed with the construction contract to be awarded by the end of March 2014.
Council Chairperson, Councillor Ruairí McHugh explained: “In 2012 Strabane District Council committed to placing a focus on the development of modern leisure facilities and a recycling centre and depot that will support our ongoing effort to manage our District’s waste. Next year a new Council will be created for the existing Strabane District and Derry City Council areas and rates convergence will become reality. With this rate of 2.5%, Council can continue to ensure the necessary investment is made into local services ahead of the re-organisation.”
Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) are also planned for Plumbridge, Glenmornan and the Glebe, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s ARC North West Programme. An Integrated Tourism Package, including walking trail in Killeter, as well as business support services, will also be delivered throughout the 2014/15 financial year. Council will
Interim Chief Executive, Daniel McSorley added: “I would commend the Council for ensuring the delivery of the programme of investment set out in its 2012-2015 Corporate Plan. The improvements also have the capacity to increase revenue received via the leisure centres and to lower waste management costs by creating a reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill.” The Rooster Strabane Hearld Ad2.indd 1

Alley Theatre and Caffé Fresco Awarded at the Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards 2014 The Alley Theatre is delighted to announce that their partnership project with Caffé Fresco has been awarded the ‘Employee Engagement Award’ at last week’s Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards held in the Ulster Hall. Hosted by Wendy Austin, over 22 businesses and arts organisations came together to celebrate excellence in five award categories. Last year, in partnership with The Alley Theatre and along with the help of world class children’s theatre company Cahoots NI the employees of Caffé Fresco took part in a unique drama themed project. Over a number of week’s waiters/waitresses, chefs and even the management of Caffé Fresco took part in workshops in the Alley Theatre to create a fun filled cabaret evening which they would then perform to customers in the restaurant. Under the facilitation of Cahoots NI the staff wrote, produced and performed in their own show to a full restaurant. It was a superb evening of music, dance, illusion and magic. Proprietor of Caffe Fresco Trevor Mealiff commented ‘We are delighted to have won the ‘Employee Engagement Award’
in partnership with The Alley Theatre for this project. We wanted to be involved in a project that benefited not only our staff but also our customers and we felt this project fitted the brief perfectly. We were facilitated by Cahoots NI who were fantastic to work with as they guided us through all the magic and illusion elements of the evening. However it was the staff who really got involved by writing their own songs and choreographed their own dances. The workshops at the Alley acted as excellent team building exercises and also gave the staff an opportunity to work on stage for the very first time. The whole organization loved being involved in this project and the customers really enjoyed it. This project not only increased our brand awareness and sponsorship links with the Alley Theatre but also highlighted the great projects which can be achieved through Arts & Business partnerships. the Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards 2014’. Arts & Business NI are an excellent organisation as they inspire and celebrate inspiring partnership between commerce and culture. This award represents a partnership that involves employees in the arts and incorporates creativity and innovation
into the workplace and this project certainly symbolised this. Thank you to Caffé Fresco for their continued support and to Arts & Business NI. Well done to everyone involved’. To view a video clip of the cabaret evening visit the Alley Theatre Youtube page on http://bit.ly/1iFYbAk

‘Family Fun Run’ raises funds for ‘Friends of the Cancer Centre’ A local family from Strabane has raised a phenomenal £4,275 for local charity Friends of the Cancer Centre, with a charity quiz and fun run. The Doherty family came together to raise vital funds for one of Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charities, Friends of the Cancer Centre, after their father, Cahir, was treated at the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital. The family’s fundraising fun kicked off with a charity quiz night at the Strabane Golf Club in October, where former quiz master Cahir put together the questions for the night. As well as the quiz, the night also included a raffle and a host of spot prizes donated by local businesses. Not content with the quiz night, the Doherty’s also organised a charity fun run in Strabane town centre on 1st December 2013. Over 170 people took to the streets to compete in the 6.2k route through the town, with the first man and first woman crossing the line winning a £50 voucher which was kindly donated by Asda. The quiz night and the fun run have raised an amazing £4,275 for Friends of the Cancer Centre. Commenting on what motivated the fundraising drive, Cheryl Doherty, said: “Like most people, we’ve had a number of people close to us who have been affected by cancer and our father
was recently diagnosed and treated at the Cancer Centre in Belfast. We wanted to say thank you for the tremendous care and support that my father received during his treatment. We also knew that by supporting Friends of the Cancer Centre we would be giving something back and helping other families affected by cancer. “Our quiz night was great fun and daddy ensured that we really put people’s knowledge to the test with the quiz questions. The fun run in December was exceptional and we were completely overwhelmed by the number of people who took part. The support we received in the lead up to the run and on the day itself was wonderful and we can’t thank the people of Strabane enough for getting behind us. The whole family are thrilled that both events went so well and most importantly, raised so much money for a really great cause. We’ve all been bitten by the fundraising bug now, so we’re hoping to do the fun run again later this year.” Friends of the Cancer Centre is Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charity based right at the heart of the Cancer Centre, Belfast City Hospital. of the Cancer Centre relies entirely on donations, and all money raised goes towards providing and funding key services and vital projects that have a real and lasting impact on patients and their families. Events & Community Fundraising Manager for Friends of the Cancer Centre,
Claire Hogarth, said: “The Doherty family are fantastic supporters and they’ve done exceptionally well in raising so much money for Friends of the Cancer Centre. I’d like to thank them all, as well as everyone who came along on the night for the quiz and those who took to the streets of Strabane
for the fun run, for their support. The money raised will make a very big difference to the lives of patients and their families right across Northern Ireland.” The Doherty family would like to thank all those who supported and sponsored their fundraising efforts and helped make the quiz and fun run such a great success.

Blessed are the Freak’s
Can Bearly Wait!
London has the famous pelican crossing where the Beatles posed for the cover of ‘Abbey Road’, just up the road from those very studios.
Further up north, there is the Salford Lads Club, where Manchester band the Smiths posed outside for an iconic image to be found on the inner sleeve of their classic 1986 album, ‘The Queen Is Dead’. Strabane has a local shop where “Freak’s” has been spray painted on the shutters – yes, grammatically incorrect apostrophe included. Obviously, the latter has yet to reach the tourist board pleasing heights of the first two but after arriving in 2013 with the quirky confident indie-pop sound that made-up their ‘With an Apostrophe’ EP, Strabane band Freak’s are hoping to build on what initially began as a bit of fun. The local four-piece consists of Ronan Doherty (guitar and vocals), Pete Devine (guitar), Ronan Duffy (bass and vocals) and Aodhan Doherty on drums. Speaking to the Herald, Pete Devine and Ronan Doherty from the band insist that fun is still the most important factor for them. “Before we get into we should stress that the graffiti in question wasn’t the work of anyone in the band,” laughs Pete. “It’s there, it’s in bright red writing and it has the apostrophe in the wrong place. I only noticed it a few weeks before we started practicing as a band. I’d be walking past it most days and it always gave me a wee laugh. When the band started we always joked that it would be funny to get a band photo in front of the ‘Freak’s’ graffiti. Then at a party in Belfast we decided that we should go even further and call ourselves Freak’s, keeping the apostrophe where it is. I think it was a good idea because we don’t take ourselves too seriously and it suits our sense of humour I guess.” So grammatically incorrect graffiti aside, from where does the band draw their inspiration? “One of my biggest influences at the minute would be Bombay Bicycle Club,” says Ronan. “When I first heard them I didn’t think the singer was all that great and I know I’m not too great a singer, so I figured that this was a band I could identify with. A band we all share an appreciation for is Villagers. Pete, bless him, hasn’t missed any of their Northern Irish gigs this year and I’ve only missed one. Most of their songs are written on an acoustic guitar and then transcribed for an electric band, which is mostly what we do as well. I’ve written a lot of stuff with the acoustic guitar and Pete has been able to take his electric guitar and showcase where that song

Strabane band - Freak’s. can go.” Lyrically, the band appears to be extracting tales from their own doorstep but in a rather comedic fashion. From an old piano in Ronan’s house to Rory McIroy to bottles of “buck”, Freak’s have a wide and bizarre range of muses. “I think we have a similar, if at times obscure, sense of humour,” explains Pete. “We just want to make each other laugh. Lyrics would draw us to a band, certainly to the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club and Arctic Monkeys and from there you can go to people like John Cooper Clarke. I remember watching a documentary about the Undertones and they wrote songs about Mars bars and their cousin Kevin being a bit smarter than them and it made me want to be in a band that was both good and fun to be part of. I just enjoy scribbling away and I love a good pun or double entendre, which is unfortunate for the people who have to put up with me on a daily basis!” Ronan picks up on issue of the lyrics. “As Pete says, we try to make ourselves laugh but also the rest of our friends and those who listen to our music as well. There are a lot of references to Strabane in the songs. Strabane often gets a hard time but we’re trying to bring out the fun side of things in this town. It’s a great town and there’s a great local music scene at the minute so if we can make people smile that’s job done as far as we’re
concerned.” The band currently has a video for the new song, ‘Number 1”, doing the rounds on YouTube. As ever it’s rife with Strabane references, with a local bar, church and the waterwall making guest appearances. The track itself is a real positive indication of where the band is heading musically. “The new songs have us really excited,” enthuses Pete. “They’re stronger I think and based very much on drumbeats, tempo and groove, so much to the point that they’d probably be hard to do acoustically. Playing the tracks is a lot of fun so hopefully listening to them will be equally so. One or two of them might go rather grungy. I’ve just got a new pedal and it’s pretty filthy, in the right way of course!” So is the band now taking matters more seriously now? “I think so,” says Ronan. “I don’t think that was the case when we recorded ‘Symmetry and Correlation’ because we weren’t even sure if we’d all still be in Strabane a few months later. The response has been above and beyond what we expected. We’re looking forward to getting the new stuff out and doing more gigs and most importantly making it fun for ourselves and those who listen.” The debut EP by Freak’s is available to purchase on Bandcamp: http://freaks-music.bandcamp.com/ album/with-an-apostrophe
The collective is the brainchild of Tony Captain, Seán Ó’Neíll and Bill Wood. As it happens, their next big event will be happening in Dicey’s, Strabane on Friday, March 28, with four fine local original acts making up the bill. Headlining on the night will be Tokyo Empire with a healthy mix of their established gems and new material. Joining them will be Belfast/Strabane four-piece The Big Grizzly, giving their synth driven mix of blood, sweat, facial hair and noise a Strabane debut. Local newcomers The Valideers, who have been busy recording new material, will also plug their wares and kicking things off will be Those Ghosts’ front man, Aodhan Doherty, with a special acoustic set. Admission on the night is £3 before 11pm, £4 after 11pm – value for money at any time of the evening! A spokesperson for Bearly Organized said: “In a nutshell, we started Bearly Organized because we want to build a strong platform for up and coming bands, as well as the more established bands that we all know and love. We figured, what if we had a promoter in the local scene that was all about inclusion, welcoming newbies and treating the artists fairly? There are a lot of excellent promoters out there already doing this but in a scene where bands complain about cliques, we can offer a lot. So, are you in a band? Get in touch! We want to help out in any way possible by giving everybody a shot. All going well, we’ll build a strong enough contact list and keep this project of ours in the light instead of it fading into the abyss.” You can contact Bearly Organized via E-mail bearlyorganised@gmail.com, on Twitter via @ bearlyorganised, Instagram via bearlyorganised or via their Facebook page- www.facebook. com/bearlyorganisedpromotions.
Mistletoe and Whine – it’s not (that) unusual. It’s perhaps the oddest set of pairings in music since Metallica made a record with Lou Reed. Morrissey has announced a series of dates across the USA this summer and he will be joined by none other than Cliff Richard and Tom Jones for shows in New York and Los Angeles respectively. On paper it seems bizarre: two musical knights of the realm opening for a very vocal anti-monarchist; two 70-something pop crooners opening for the outsider’s outsider, a singer steeped in the unconventional, the controversial and the self-deprecating. While unfairly and lazily labelled as ‘The Pope of Mope’, Morrissey can, indeed, be a bit of a drama queen and can be as venomous, witty and enthralling as he can be a car-crash. So why would two old school entertainers
like Cliff and Tom get involved with such an individual and why would the man who sang of his hopes of Margaret Thatcher being beheaded wish to mix with two such establishment figures? Well, when it comes to the pop establishment, Morrissey has always been a bit of an obsessive musicologist, even prior to his time in the Smiths – his
letters into the weekly music magazines in the early 70s are a testament to that. In his ‘Autobiography’, published just before Christmas, Morrissey spoke of being seduced by early period Elvis Presley and much of what it inspired, including, of course, The Shadows, Tom Jones and Billy Fury. He also enthused greatly about hear-
ing Tom Jones for the first time in the mid-sixties, with an intrigued pre-teen ear to whatever pop flavourings his Irish aunts and uncles, who lived on the same street, spun on the record player. Like Cliff, Morrissey took a number of aspects from Elvis, most notably the legendary quiff and has always had an obsession with that late 50s, early 60s period in rock n’ roll – an obsession he explored further in the early 90s with the rockabilly and glam greased ‘Your Arsenal’ album. Anyone who has attended a Morrissey gig in recent years is treated to a pre-show compilation of video clips of iconic figures that have inspired the man, from Lou Reed to the New York Dolls, to Buffy Sainte-Marie to Shelagh Delaney, to Cliff, Tom Jones and Joe Dolan! That’s right, Morrissey is a Joe Dolan fan and given recent events one suspects he may even have asked Joe to open one of his Irish shows
if he was still with us. So, while his choice of support acts for these two shows is a surprise, they’re not THAT much of a surprise when you scratch the surface. Also, despite his success, Cliff has never really cracked the US market. Now in his 70s, he will certainly relish the opportunity of playing a 20,000 seated arena over there, something he has never done. Of course, the gigs still have to take place and anything can happen between now and then. One would suspect that Morrissey is hoping more for a Shadows period set from Cliff than ‘Wired for Sound’ and ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’. Cliff will have his own plans. Remember how upset Morrissey got in the mid-90s when supporting Bowie and the Thin White Duke tried to dictate what he should play? Take heed, Mozza!

Not cool Jose!
The Sensitive One!
Once again it seems that Jose Mourinho is more interested in what other teams around him are doing rather than just taking care of his own back yard. When he came into the Premier League in 2004 he announced himself to the World as ‘The Special One’ well sorry Jose, lately you are more like ‘The Sensitive One’, you always loved a rant and the media and rival fans always thought you were good value, but now you’re nothing more than a whinger! OK we know Sir Alex is gone now and he always put the boot into poor Arsene Wenger, but even Ferguson, who was the ‘master’ of the mind games would never as stooped so low to describe poor Arsene as a ‘Specialist in Failure’…Red Card for Jose Mourinho, shame on you!
performance over Don’t go Nemanja! Crystal Palace at the weekend in which Utd won comfortably you would be forgiven for thinking that everything is on the up at Old Trafford. But, whilst all eyes were focused on Rooney signing the deal, something nearly slipped under the radar, their captain and best central defender Nemanja Vidic has decided to leave for Inter Milan at the end of the season. We all know nothing is confirmed yet, but this one looks like it has legs. Looks like United also need a new defence because he is the best defender they have! Man City outclassed.
makes a so called World class signing…he’ll be a flop they say, he won’t be able to adapt to the pace of the Premier League. This season is without doubt the most competitive Premier League title race in decades with at least four clubs battling for glory, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City & Liverpool. OK this might be exciting for the fans domestically but worryingly results in Europe have been disappointing for the past few seasons. Both Man City and Arsenal were completely outclassed by Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively. Both ties look over already, so now the Premier League is depending on Chelsea and Man Utd to pull them out. I don’t think it’s going to happen. If you’re honest, you just can’t see a Premier League team winning old big ears anytime soon…best League in the World they say, I don’t think so.

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats The Herald speaks to a son or daughter of Strabane, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond Strabane we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for Strabane and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Niall Jack. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I left Strabane in May 2004 to go to Toronto, Canada. I was young and just wanted a change. It’s been ten years now and what a change! Ha ha. What’s it like for a Strabane man/ woman where you are? It’s fine. The fact that you meet a lot of Irish people makes it a lot more bearable.
A great memory of Strabane? A great memory I have of Strabane would have to be just the scenery in itself. It is brilliant. Something you miss about Strabane? All my family and friends are in Strabane, so that would have to be the biggest thing I miss.
Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? I think one day I may live in Strabane again when I’m older but to be honest I was hoping I would be living the Bahamas by that stage. Ha ha! Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future?
Where in Strabane did you grow up?
What important factors do you think anyone thinking of moving abroad should consider?
Well I would love to see a lot more jobs in Strabane again because now every time I come back to visit there’s another store closed and another job lost, it’s disappointing to see.
I grew up in the Ballycolman. There was always someone to have a kick about with or to play on your bike with and sometimes getting up to badness with also!
Well one factor would obviously be the factor of work! Are you gonna get a job there? That was the one deciding factor for me.
One of the best things about Strabane? One of the best things about Strabane by far would have to be the response from

the community whenever someone really needs their help. Everyone pulls together. Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane? The first thing I look forward to when get back is going to Diceys for a pint of Tennent’s and a packet of bacon fries. Ha ha!
Do you have a family member living away from Strabane? Do you want them to feature on ‘Bringing it all back home’? If you do email us: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk and we will get our reporter to call you!

Strabane Athletic F.C. Notes
Strabane Athletic Dismantle Roe Rovers Strabane Athletic got back on the pitch again recently after a series of frustrating cancellations due to the adverse recent weather. It was a successful return for the local lads as they were comfortable 4-0 winners over Roe Rovers at Melvin Park. Sean Ferry got the ball rolling for Strabane when he beat the offside trap after 8 minutes and supplied a good finish to put his team ahead. Thereafter it was his strike partner Joe Breslin who stole the show with a fine hat trick. It took a while after Ferry’s goal for Athletic to assert their superiority on the game. The windy conditions made flowing football difficult and a lot of passes went astray. Aidan Friel on the left wing was involved in Strabane’s best moves and he provided Joe Breslin with a great pass on 25 minutes but the shot was parried by the keeper. Five minutes later Aoddhan “Elvis” Doherty found Ferry with a fine ball, his snapshot was saved but Breslin was on hand to knock home the rebound. Shortly afterwards Joe Breslin received a superb delivery from Richie Graham and the striker converted at the second attempt to effectively end the game as a contest. Half time came with Athletic three goals to the good and home keeper Ruaidhri Winters a virtual spectator. The Limavady men began the second half with a bit more urgency and Winters had to be sharp to deny the visiting centre forward. This was however a rare venture into the Strabane penalty area
Big Win at the Weekend! Goals from Joe Breslin, Sean Ferry and Jonny Lafferty gave Strabane Athletic an important away victory over Oxford United Stars. In a game played in windy conditions at Derry’s Templemore Sports Complex. Athletic played good football and dominated for long periods. They could have added to their three well taken goals and failure to do so made for a nervous last five minutes when Oxford made it 3-2. However Strabane held on for a significant three points in their quest for the Northern Ireland Intermediate League title.

by Rovers and the second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Athletic creating all the chances. It was surprising therefore that they only added one goal in the second period. Niall Coyle tried an overhead and Aidan Friel had a good shot parried before Coyle unselfishly squared the ball to Joe Breslin allowing the striker to tap in for a well-deserved hat trick. Thereafter Athletic coped comfortably with occasional Roe Rovers threats and managed to miss some chances of their own. A decent effort by Captain Sean Ferry was just wide and Joe Breslin nearly had a fourth but headed just wide. Several other chances weren’t converted and at the final whistle the home team had to be content with a 4-0 victory. Given the difficult conditions and lack of recent match practice Strabane Athletic will be happy to have gained a convincing three points in their These lovely ladies enjoyed a fantastic night at the Strictly Come Dancing Show at the Fir quest for Intermediate League honours. Workshops & Seminars
Over the years I have attended, studied, learned and put into practice many different self development techniques. I have listen to and read popular authors who each had their own take on how to get through this life as easily and ‘successfully’ as possible. At the start, my powers of discernment were not as finely tuned as they are now and I tended to believe much of what the ‘gurus’ of the day were peddling my way. Many things still stay with me from those days however a great number of other things have changed. One of the greatest changes is my sense of value. I certainly value things differently now. I can now appreciate the wonders of nature. The beauty of a sunset or the marvel of how in Ireland we can have all four seasons’ weather in the one day. I can look at a spider in the middle of it’s’ web and wonder how does she do that or how does she not get caught up in her own web. My sense of awe has greatly developed and I get great pleasure from simple things and the greatness and mysteries of nature.

I now know that life is full of ups and downs. I no longer believe I am a failure when things go wrong and I don’t know the answers. I realise that positivity is only one half of the equation and periods of negativity teach me so much about myself. For many years I attempted to put a positive spin on everything that happened to me. If I
Nowadays I always get what I need somehow and in difficult times I accept that this too shall pass. I have found that everything is only temporary. The bad feeling leaves just as mysteriously as the good feeling. Even if I am in great pain, there are times when I am in greater pain than others. It constantly changes. I also appreciate the fact that I have learned a very profound thing in my darkest days. It seems somehow that the only way I was to take the lesson on board was to go through that particular experience. I don’t have to like these episodes in my life however I now can appreciate their value in teaching me something more about myself.
Profound Learning Remember whatever happens today you have the resources within to handle it. Slim sports teacher is top of the class A mum who lost nearly 8st to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a PE teacher is feeling top of the World. Weighing more than 19st and struggling to walk far without getting out of breath, Amy Richardson felt her ambitions of an active career were slipping away. But after joining her local Slimming World group she lost 7st 11½lbs, dropped from a size 24 to a 12 and bagged her dream job. “I felt like a fraud,” says Amy, now 29. “I was doing sports development at university, yet I found it difficult to climb the two flights of stairs to my lectures and had to wear men’s sportswear because of my size. I couldn’t imagine any school wanting to employ an overweight PE teacher and I knew I needed to do something.” Amy, describes herself as a ‘chubby child’ and says she often felt self-conscious when wearing a leotard to enjoy her hobby of trampolining. However, it was while studying at university that her weight began to impact on her everyday life. She says: “It was the first time I’d lived away from home, I was eating all the wrong things and going out with my friends most nights. At the time I didn’t think about what I was eating and drinking at all but looking back it’s no wonder my weight went up to more than 19st. My joints ached, I got out of breath easily and I lost all my confidence – on nights out I’d just sit in the corner while all my friends were on the dance floor.” Amy’s mum Lynne joined her local Slimming World group, then in September that year when one of Amy’s friends suggested they sign up too that Amy felt brave enough to give it a go. Within five
weeks she’d lost a stone, less than three years later she was 5st lighter, and today – after having her little girl – she’s lost a total of 7st 11½lbs, dropping from 19st 2lbs to 11st 4½lbs. Amy followed the Food Optimising plan and was immediately surprised at how well she could fit healthy eating into her life, even at university. She started making recipes from Slimming World’s website and swapped her regular takeaways and convenience foods for quick and easy meals that she cooked from scratch, like home-made burgers made with extra-lean mince with healthy chips baked in the oven and jacket potatoes with baked beans and salad. She says: “I taught myself how to cook lots of healthy meals and found things that I’d thought were bland before tasted so much better when I made them myself. I could still have treats like chocolate or alcohol too, so I didn’t have to miss out on nights out and lots of my friends didn’t even realise I was slimming.”
Fear & Worry She says: “Before I went to the group I was scared, I worried what people would think of me and thought I might be the biggest person there. After a few weeks I saw how well it worked – I was even the ‘Slimmer of the Month’ – and I was hooked. The group was so friendly and I realised everyone was in the same boat so no one judged you.” As the weight came off Amy’s energy and fitness levels improved, and her confidence increased too. By the time she left university and successfully applied for her first job as a PE teacher she was 5st slimmer. She says: “I couldn’t believe I’d achieved my dream and had the job I’d always wanted. There’s no way I’d have been able to this job at 19st – at least not well – but now I can keep up with
the kids, demonstrate things I want them to do, and I don’t have to worry about my size at all. I’ve lost another 2st 11½lbs since I’ve been at the school and I think it’s good for my students to see that I haven’t followed some silly fad diet, I’ve lost weight sensibly and kept it off.” Amy, who lives with fiancé Chris and their 17-month-old daughter Emily, has continued to attend her Slimming World group every week – even while she was pregnant with Emily*. She says: “I always joke that I’ve taken the scenic route on my weight-loss journey. Right from the start I was determined that I didn’t want a quick fix, I wanted to make a change for life, and I know I’ve definitely done that. I’ve never felt like I was missing out and eating healthily and being active are just part of my life now. I know I’ll be able to pass everything Slimming World’s taught me on to Emily so she’ll never have to struggle with her weight like I did, which is an amazing feeling. “I can’t imagine where I’d be if I hadn’t found Slimming World, but it’s hard to believe I’d be as happy as I am today – I’ve got the figure I always wanted, my dream job, the perfect fiancé and a beautiful baby girl!” Sinead who runs the local Sion Mills Slimming World group says “ It’s an amazing story how Amy has transformed her life. This is just an example of the many success stories we see as Slimming World Consultants. Our Extra Easy plan is so easy to follow,no need to ever feel hungry again. At the minute we have some fantastic offers on to save money when joining. Usui Reiki Master/Teacher
WHAT ARE ANGELS? Angels help us connect with our inner source, our higher selves, and they are very real and relevant in this modern world. They are part and parcel of the universal source we call God. Angels are non-denominational, they are celestial beings of pure love & light and they belong to all of us. You were never meant to walk this life’s journey alone, without help or without hints or guidance as to where to go next. Angels will never decide for you, but they will certainly be there for you whenever you need them. So while many people believe in the presence of Angels, very few of us actually listen to our Angel’s messages or even know how to ask or listen. You well may ask, “How do we know Angels are there, if they exist? Why are they not obvious to us?”..... It is because of our God given gift of free will. Our free will allows us to choose and be who we want to be, nobody is going to tell you what to do or what to believe, not even the Angels. The Angels will not impose upon on your free will, that’s universal law but what they will do, if we ask, is offer Angelic guidance through our thoughts feelings and other indirect means.
1. SPEND TIME EACH DAY IN PRAYER Spend time each day in prayer. Prayer is the simple act of asking. It is a conversation with God, the Universe, a higher power or a specific Angel. It is a matter of opening up your heart and mind to whatever is causing you distress or worry. Ask your Angels for direction and guidance while focusing on your problem. Once you have asked, let it go, detach from it (sometimes difficult) and believe it is now in the hands of your Angels. The Angels will answer your prayer so be vigilant! Much of the answers and guidance the Angels give us can be readily seen through sycronicities, those funny incidents that pop up, that seem to relevant answers to our questions. You may see a sign or a licence plate with a name, number or a word that has meaning or relevance to you. You may turn on the radio and just at that moment hear song lyrics or perhaps an advertisement that has words that seem to have relevant meaning to your question or need. These are external signs and messages that are given to us in response to the questions we ask or our thoughts. We also receive answers through our inner guidance, our internal navigation system which uses our 5 senses as antenna in a more expanded way than we are used to. Through our feelings, we receive much of our subtle information in our everyday lives. We have ‘gut feelings’, we have uneasy feelings or perhaps something just feels right. You can ask your Angels, “Is this the right way to go? Is this the right thing to do?....And then be open to how you feel next, do you have a
good feeling or a bad one? Often times we ignore our feelings. Another way to receive an answer is through our senses turned inwards. That means we may get an answer through hearing a response in our heads or seeing an image in our mind’s eye or perhaps an instant ‘knowing’, where you get a clear concept or an answer that pops up in your mind.
2. TAKE TIME TO MEDITATE Prayer is talking while meditating is listening. There are hundreds of ways to meditate and we tend to make it much harder than it really is. Meditating can be as simple as sitting quietly and focusing attention on your breath. Ask your Angels to help you quieten your mind of the barrage of thoughts that come and go each day. If you are new to meditation start off with 10 minutes twice a day. Meditation in the morning before you start your day is best and then a again in the evening.
3. LIGHT A CANDLE OR BURN INCENSE Most Angels have a specific colour or scent associated with them. For instance if you’d like to work with Archangel Michael, a purple candle would be ideal. But don’t worry if you don’t have coloured candles, any candle will be perfect, don’t forget it’s all about the intention. Archangel Michael is a wonderful Angel to work with if you need courage, strength or will power.
ing that it is now in the hands of the Angels, who know the best solution to everything. I find that writing a list of all the things I am grateful for and reading it before bedtime is a wonderful way to end the day.
6. GO OUT IN NATURE Go to your favourite place out in nature. If you don’t have one, take time to find one. Go to the beach, find a quiet path in a forest or locate a beautiful garden where you live. If you look you can find a wonderful, natural settings almost anywhere. Again ask your Angels to help you find the ideal spot, it could be your own back garden. Allow the beauty of nature, of trees, plants and flowers and the sea to fill your heart and mind. Take some time to breathe in the smells and feel the energy of that special place. If you are working with a specific Angel, call that Angel’s name. You can ask the Angels for sign that they are with you. When you do that you may often feel a light breeze or the sound of a bird or a feather might appear from nowhere. Be open and receptive to signs after you’ve asked. When I began my spiritual journey a friend of mine intro-
duced me to some amazing places of beauty and serenity. In these places I found that I could easily connect with my spirit, my Angels and with the Divine. And you can too.
7. MAKE AN ANGEL CARD OR MOSAIC Collect pictures, bows, lace, flowers, coloured paper and anything else that speaks to you and brings out your creative side. Get some glue and coloured pens and make a personalised Angel card or mosaic. You could use a specific Angel picture from a book or internet or draw your own. You can write a letter on the back of your card or use it as a focal point on your altar. There are many beautiful Angel Therapy decks on the market but you could make your own series of cards, highlighting different attributes you would like to have in your life, such as abundance, patience, laughter, joy, gratitude, courage or freedom. Check out The New Chrysalis Cove website where you will find information on all the treatments I offer, Workshop Dates for 2014, a chance to sign up for a Weekly Angel Message & lots more…visit www.thechrysaliscove.com

4. CREATE A SACRED SPACE Our minds are very easily trained. If you meditate in the same spot every day, eventually when you sit in that place your mind will think ‘it’s time to meditate’. You will immediately go into a meditative state. Create an altar in the corner of your room or on top of a dresser…anywhere really! Spend time each day in your sacred space and call upon The Angels. I have an altar in my therapy room with crystal, candles, cards and other objects that are meaningful to me. You could also have a special piece of fabric that you could use to drape a chair or your altar, whatever makes it special for you. Take a deep breath before you enter your sacred space and imagine meeting your Divine helpers. As soon as you think ‘Angels’ they are beside you in an instant.
5. WRITE A LETTER I find writing letters a wonderful way to connect with Divine guidance. You can address the letter to a specific Angel, Guardian Angel or the Guardian Angel of your soul mate, if you haven’t met him/her yet, “Dear Guardian Angel of My Soul Mate”. You can write your problem, ask for help or ask your Angels to arrange a meeting with your Soul Mate. I find it a wonderful way to release fears and resistance. You can place the letter on your altar or burn it after it is written. This is good way of letting go of what you are asking, detaching from it and believ-

Watching the Detectives ‘True Detective’ is an eight part American drama series on HBO and is currently being aired on Sky Atlantic. It was created and written by Nic Pizzolatto, with the first season directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.
Mathew McConaughy & Woody Harrelson in ‘True Detective’.
It stars Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles. A southern noir serial killer murder mystery, the series runs on multiple timelines to trace two State Police CID homicide detectives’ hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana across seventeen years. The main protagonists are two detectives, Marty Hart (Harrelson) and Rust Cohle McConaughey), and the plot follows two mysteries, separated by 17 years. In 1995, Hart and Cohle team up to track down a serial killer with a penchant for occult spectacle, and the deeper they get into the case the more each man unravels. In 2012, Hart and Cohle, no longer on the force and a shadow of their former selves, are interviewed separately about the events of 1995, and about each other. Two new detectives are investigating a new murder with similarities to the original case, but also want to know more about the two former detectives. The two main focuses are finding out what happened to destroy Hart and Cohle, and the ins and outs of the new investigation.
natory visions from a past of drug abuse. With their stories not adding up, and the 1995 hunt growing increasingly bizarre, much is left for the viewer to dissect with their own brand of detective work. Much of that evidence will be brought to the water coolers and lunch breaks for the next month or so. This should be very interesting indeed. True Detective airs on Sky Atlantic at 9pm on Saturdays.

Fishing Day at Birchwood!
Not long now folks!! 1ST of March is drawing ever closer and the excitement levels are gathering momentum. As ever The Bridge Guns and Tackle are happy to provide you with all your angling needs. Licences Permits and Club Tickets are all available from Bridge Guns and Tackle here at Butcher Street in Strabane. River levels have remained high throughout the closed season however the optimism of anglers has not been dampened by the unrelenting rainfall. Anglers throughout the North West remain hopeful of hooking into that elusive Springer. As the season draws closer we eagerly await the opening of the Rivers Finn and Foyle. So fingers crossed for a huge run of fish to enter the local systems and entertain anglers throughout. |The Bridge Guns and Tackle would like to take this opportunity to thank anglers for their custom and to wish all, “Tight lines for the 2014 Season.”
Competition News Birchwood Trout Fishery in Drumquin was the latest venue for our angling completion sponsored by Bridge Guns and Tackle at Butcher Street in Strabane. The competition was a huge success with all proceeds being donated to the Muscular
Dystrophy Charity. First prise for the biggest fish went to Mighty Mick Moor who banked a monster trout of nearly 6lb. Fellow competitors were left trailing in his wake! Well done Mick! The prize for the most fish caught and released went to Stephen Nobel who blew the field away with a haul of 12 trout consisting of some beautiful Rainbows and a selection hard fighting Steel Heads. Two spot prizes were also awarded; the first going to Aiden Langan for the first trout on the bank with Charlie Farrell taking the first fish after the break. A free days fishing was kindly donated to both spot prize winners by Ian and Sharon, proud owners of the superb Birchwood Trout Fishery. A fantastic day was had by all with over 130 trout caught and released and only one blank recorded for the day. The Bridge Guns and Tackle would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended the competition with a particular thanks to Steve of Birchwood Trout Fishery who was as welcoming and as

Over the coming weeks and months the club will be organising many events and outings which will include: Fishing lessons. Fly casting lessons. Fly tying classes. Fishing Competitions. Fishing trips. The club for junior anglers is now accepting applications for membership at The Bridge Guns and Tackle, Butcher Street in Strabane. Telephone 02871880826 or contact us on Facebook. Membership is open to boys and girls from 12 – 18 yrs old while members under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Shooting Season Over The end of January has sadly seen the passing of yet another shooting season. Nonetheless it was a good season for woodcock with plenty seen and shot in Strabane and the surrounding lands. Strabane Sporting Club has seen its membership numbers continue to grow this year coinciding with the release of extra birds onto the ground. Good bags were reported by all who hunted the ground and some great results were reported! The dogs will get a well earned rest over the coming weeks until the better weather encourages us out for a bit of training before it all kicks off again. Roll on October!!
Prizewinner Mick Moore getting his prize.
Well done and superb shooting! I hope the Strabane District Council recognise your achievements same as last year. Patsy also told me that the club is looking to expand on its Junior Section and would like to invite youth clubs within the district to come, give it a go and take part in some target shooting. Just back from their Annual Club trip to the Shooting Fair in England are the members of Dunnyboe Target Club. All had a great time and will now be preparing with a bit of practice for their up-coming Charity Competition sponsored by Paul Forbes of Bridge Guns and Tackle, Butcher Street Strabane. The club organises and runs the event every year. Club Chairman Phonsy Ward says all proceedings will be donated to charity and would love for all members to participate in the event.

Knockavoe students take on ‘Trade Fair challenge’
North West Trade Fair: Students from Knockavoe School show off their stall at the Young Enterprise NI Trade Fair at Foyleside Shopping Centre.
Knockavoe School students took the opportunity to trade with shoppers at the Young Enterprise NI Trade Fair at Foyleside Shopping Centre on Friday 31st January. The local business education charity is working with Knockavoe School students with special educational and support needs as they develop a real business and learn new skills in entrepreneurship and business management as part of the ‘Team Programme’. The trade fair gave the participating young people an opportunity to bring their products to market and test their sales skills by trading with the general public. The trade fair was attended by Foyle MP Mark Durkan who commented: “This is a great opportunity to give local students the chance to learn
about enterprise and commerce. They get a reallife insight into the world and practice of business and clearly enjoy the experience. “I am a strong supporter of Young Enterprise which is doing so much to encourage a culture of enterprise in our local students. The enthusiasm of these young business people is the best endorsement of Young Enterprise’s work.” Eighteen Young Enterprise companies attended the trade fair from across the North West as part of a range of programmes co-ordinated by the charity. The Knockavoe School company ‘Krafty Kids’ sold a range of handmade arts and crafts to keen shoppers at Foyleside Shopping Centre. Young Enterprise NI is a charity and is part-funded by the Department of Education. For further information and for details volunteering and fundraising opportunities please visit www.yeni.co.uk.
Strabane and beyond remembers the man with the smile From Front Page... He also worked in the local Iceland store where he was popular with staff and customers alike and also in the local Subway sandwich bar. Christopher Hendry, manager of Dicey Rileys, posted a tribute on the bar’s Facebook page. It read: “The Man with the smile, that didn’t have enemies. An absolute pleasure to have known and an inspiration of how to live life and be content and happy as a human being, even in his times of illness, he thought of those around him before himself. Myself, Sophia, Stoodge and Kevin had the pleasure to have worked with Aiden for a number of years, he was genuine, pleasant and a hit with the ladies...Whilst we know Aiden has passed far too early in life, we will make damn sure that his memory lives on. All we can do as a community now is be strong for his family and closest friends and try to
live life a little more like Aiden who was a fantastic example to us all!” Countless others left tributes on Aiden’s Facebook page. One tribute read: “This is the first person I met at my first time at Camp Vacamas. He made memories and changed my life. RIP.” Another read: “Never read so many pleasant and positive words and tributes about one person. So many people have so many kind words and great memories of you. Your family must be so proud, and proud they should be. God bless
you, Aiden. Goodnight ol’ pal x.” A couple of touching videos featuring a montage of photos of Aiden socialising and on his travels have generated over 5000 views on YouTube, a testament to his popularity. At his funeral ceremony at Melmount Church, Fr Michael Doherty said: “We are not here this morning to canonise Aiden, to make him a saint. But if we were, the title I would give him would be St Aiden of the Smile. That’s what made him stand apart. He had a smile that was welcoming and reassuring.” Aiden is survived by his father and mother, Eamon and Mary, and siblings Eamon, Maria, Paul, Sinead, Damien and Conor. A number of fundraising events in memory of Aiden are soon to be planned with all proceeds going to Leukaemia Research. Details will be revealed in the local media when finalised.
