Kiernan’s plan is now to climb up the PDC ladder but he is fully aware that it’ll be a challenge, but one that he has the appetite for. “It’s time to knuckle down and put in some hard practice. My first challenge tour is in March. I’m back for two days and then off to Bremen in Germany. It’s all part of what needs to be done but I’m ready for it,” he stressed. While climbing up the rankings is his main priority, Kiernan is making sure his options are open, so he has even got involved in some television production work. “ITV flew me over to help produce
Local Champion On a local level, Kiernan is Joe’s Bar Champion 2013, 2014 and 2015, and he is hoping to retain the title this year. He is also hoping to regain the title of Devlin’s Champion after losing this year, following victory in 2013 and 2014. He is also the current Maggie’s Bar Easter Monday Darts Champion and hopes it retain it again this year. Meanwhile all focus is on March and the challenge tour in Wigan, and then all roads lead to Germany. Kiernan is hoping to secure a sponsor to help throughout the year.

The 26-year-old, who works locally in O’Neill’s, secured of number of great wins, including a sensational comeback over Australian international star, Rob Modra, after trailing 4-0. Kiernan has now qualified to play in the European tour, UK Open qualifiers, four challenge tours, the Grand Slam qualifiers and the qualifiers for the prestigious World Championships. It marks a big step up for the Strabane man; one that he was convinced it was time to take. “I was doing loads of competitions and doing a lot of traveling,” explained Kiernan, speaking to ‘Herald’ last week. “Two years ago I won a big competition in Vilamoura, Portugal. I got invited back in October past and won again, this time in Lisbon. I was in England twice and won two big competitions there. I have a manager in England called Paul Mack, and he pulled me aside and said that the next stage to aim for is PDC. I’m in my the new television darts show ‘One Hundred and Eighty’, which aired on Sky One, so that’s another prime now, so it’s time to give it a whack.” thing under my belt,” he explained.

ANTI-GLARE COATING with purchase of Gucci, Silhouette or Oakley frame
WITHOUT
Driving and Vision Good eyesight is essential for safe driving and poor vision can impair your driving performance. You are responsible for ensuring that your vision meets the specified minimium requirements every time you drive. If you notice or suspect any change in your vision, do not delay, visit your optometrist. It is a criminal offence to drive with eyesight below the legal standard. Key Facts: 1. Your vision can change at any age and at any stage in your driving career. You should have your eyes tested every two years so sooner if recomended by your optometrist. 2. Commonly reported problems include not seeing road signs, eyes that feel tired and difficulties driving in twilight or night conditions, which might indicate an underlying eye condition or disease. 3. Some eye conditions do not demonstrate symptoms in the early stages so regular sight testing is important to ensure early detection and treatment. 4. Eye diseases and conditions that affect vision can occur at any age, although they are more common in people aged over 60, and other groups suchs as those with a family history of glaucoma and those with diabeties. It has been shown in studies that up to one in five middle aged drivers have driven whilst knowing they have poor eyesight therefore increasing their risk of having an accident. Much of this is caused by people putting off their eye test after noticing their eyesight has deteriorated. There are many reasons people give for putting of an eyetest such as they don’t want to wear spectacles as it makes them feel old, too busy or
worried about the cost. However spectacles are now a fashion statement with designer brands such as Gucci and Nike. Contact lenses are also an option and are very comfortable and safe to use. As for price many people get free eye tests on their medical card/NHS and specs need not be expensive with ranges for all budgets and for the month of February if you purchase a Gucci, Silhouette or Oakley frame you will get a FREE anti glare coating worth £40. As for lack of time practices are now open to suit all patients needs. Donal McGovern, Optometrist Strabane explains ‘ We realised a few years ago that patients not only wanted the option of been tested on a Saturday but also in the evening. So we now open on a Thursday night to 8 pm and a Saturday morning to 12.30 pm.’ To book an eye test or for any further information such as who is entitled to a free sight test please call into our store at 20 Castle Street Strabane or phone (048) 71882506.

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

YOUR BRAND NEW MONTHLY TRAVEL GUIDE
Bulgaria
gently into the calm water of the Black Sea. Around the rest of the resort, miniature trains will take you around where you will find bazaar style shopping malls together with restaurants, pavement cafes and bars.
Sunny Beach resort, Bulgaria
Bulgaria is quite small on the map of the world, but whatever this magical country lacks in size it makes up for in its diverse nature, variety of terrain, unique cultural and historical heritage, warm, open and friendly people. Nestled on the south-eastern Balkan Peninsula, situated on the cross road between the Eas and the West, Bulgaria has always been a site of continuous cultural exchange and a home to some of the most ancient peoples that inhabited Europe. Along with the deep, sense forests and breath-taking mountain ranges that dominate its landscape, blue Flag sandy beaches meet inviting blue waters along almost 400 kilometres of shoreline. Lowlands and high mountains will provide favourable conditions for recreation and sport, both in summer and winter, while the Bulgarian seaside resorts offer first-class hotels, professional service, endless sandy beaches and glorious sunshine. Whatever holiday you are seeking – relaxing on the beach, throwing yourself into an action-packed break, cooling off exploring traditional timeless villages and forested mountains or enjoying the precious gift of natural mineral springs – Bulgaria is sure to deliver.
Things to Do and See Bulgaria’s towering mountains, deep valleys and abundant flora and fauna make it a nature and sport-lovers’ paradise, with fabulous opportunities for walking, hiking, mountain-biking and bird-watching. Studded with mountain villages, medieval monasteries, fragrant rose fields and plunging waterfalls, the hinterland presents explorers with a myriad of sights and heritage, which is
Sunny Beach
This resort has it all – spectacular 8km long beach, buzzing seaside promenade with shops, stalls, restaurants and bars, family attractions such as playgrounds, mini-golf, two aquaparks, beach watersports and an amazing nightlife. displayed in its numerous seasonal festivals, ritual folk dances and its brightly coloured, decorative national costumes. Throughout the summer, regular cultural and folklore festivals are held in different parts of the country.
Food and Drink
Bulgarian food is a blend of Slavonic, Greek and Turkish cuisine where fresh vegetables and fruit form the basis of much of the Bulgarian cooking. Popular meats include pork, veal and chicken, while fish is plentiful along the Black Sea coast, but not so common inland. Salads are an essential part of most Bulgarian meals with the so called Shopska salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and sheep’s cheese) being the most popular. Other specialities and musts include kebapchete (grilled meat sausages) and kyufteta (meat balls), kavarma (individual casseroles of port or veal with onions and mushrooms), shiskebab, moussaka and of course the famous Bulgarian yoghurt. Bread is a necessary accompaniment with all Bulgarian meals. Wash your mean down with the local, fruity wines or a cold beer – they are very cheap compared to home!
Nessebar
Money
Bulgaria’s currency is the Lev, with about 2.66 Lev to £1.00 GBP. You can exchange money at airports, banks, exchange bureaus and hotels. Traveller’s cheques carry a higher commission. Credit cards are not widely accepted, and Scottish notes are generally not accepted.
Shopping
The Black Sea resorts are great for cheap designer clothes, CDs and handbags. Traditional handicrafts such as handmade jewellery, ace and knitwear can be found in local markets, shops and souvenir stalls.
Resorts at a Glance Golden Sands – St Kinstantin
With a history dating back some 3,000 years, Nessebar has been linked with many ancient civilisations. The magnificent old quarter is under a preservation order as a living museum town, housing the remains of 40 churches from different periods of history. You will find superb opportunities for photography and painting here. The narrow cobbled streets and gabled houses make Nessebar holidays an ideal way for guests to relax and experience a traditional Bulgarian setting. Both the old and the new town are full of life with music and entertainment sometimes late into night. UNESCO protected Nessebar is the perfect choice for families wanting to escape the noise and truly be able to relax.
The stunning beach of Golden Sands, offers a mixture of entertainment and relaxation in picturesque settings. The smaller resort of St Konstantin is next to the livelier Golden Sands.

The series that is making everybody talk officials had a conflict of interest in participating in the investigation of Halbach’s murder, particularly after Avery’s exoneration in 2003 and how that painted them.
One of the most talked about television serials over the festive period was the significantly non-festive Making a Murderer, which first streamed on Netflix on December 18. The ten-part documentary, written and directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, explores the story of Steven Avery, a Manitowoc County, Wisconsin man who served 18 years in prison for the sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen, and who was exonerated in 2003 when the DNA in the case was matched to another man guilty of crimes in the area. In 2005 he was arrested and in 2007 convicted of the murder of Teresa Halbach, a local photographer.
Controversy
The series was filmed over the course of ten years, with the creators moving back and forth from New York City to Wisconsin during filming. The series also
Making a Murderer has generated considerable controversy, both in Manitowoc County, where the documentary is set, and nationwide. A petition to the White House to pardon Avery garnered more than 128,000 signatures. In response, President Obama stated he had no covers the arrest, prosecution, authority to act in a state case. and conviction of Avery’s nephew Ten parts Brendan Dassey, who was also charged in the murder of Teresa To promote the series, Netflix Halbach. It suggests the county released the first episode concur-
rently on YouTube and on Netflix streaming, which it had not done for any other original programming. All ten parts are now available for viewing on Netflix. It is compelling, disturbing and thought provoking throughout, making logging out after one episode very difficult indeed. This documentary series really is the mustsee show of the moment. Get on it now because you will be asked about it when out and about; of that there is no doubt.
Fighting the Good Fight February will see Sky One air DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, an American television series developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim. The series is a spin-off from Arrow and The Flash. Victor Garber, Arthur Darvill and Brandon Routh star, and there will be a Prison Break reunification of sorts with Dominic Purcell and Wentworth
Miller also in the cast. Rip Hunter (Darvill) travels back in time to the present day where he brings together a team of heroes and villains in an attempt to prevent Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) from destroying the world and time itself. We shall see iconic DC characters including Firestorm, The Atom, White Canary, Hawkgirl, Captain Cold and Heatwave to fight the immortal threat of Vandal Savage. Other cast members include Caity Lotz (Arrow) Ciara
Renée (The Flash), Franz Drameh (Edge of Tomorrow, Attack the Block). Initial reviews from the US, where the first few episodes have already aired have been mainly positive. While DC continue to make their mark on the big screen in 2016 with the highly anticipated release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it is clear they are now looking to make a significant mark on the small screen, also. Legends of Tomorrow will air on Sky One from February.
Annie, a show not to be missed at the Forum next month!
ANNIE, the world’s favourite family musical, comes to the Millennium Forum for one week only from Tuesday 23rd until Saturday 27th February. A busy February at the Alley Just fresh from the launch of their exciting Winter/Spring programme, The Alley Theatre has a jam packed season of concerts, festivals, exhibitions, music and drama ahead. The programme features over 70 events, including TV’s million dollar mind reader David Meade, award-winning Montana native comedian Rich Hall, and closer to home, Irish comedians Conal Gallen and Al Porter. The Alley also welcomes a wide array of local talent, including an enhanced programme of events for the Strabane Drama Festival. The Brass Band League Championships return with over 21 bands competing in four section groups. And renowned Irish musician, songwriter and uilleann pipe player, Davy Spillane, will be joined onstage at the Alley by Blackie O’Connell and Cyril O’Donoghue for the first time. Family audiences can look forward to a range of exciting events including Strabane Arts Academy’s 2016 pantomime Mulan; the spectacular Replay Theatre Company with their energetic, wigglesome, gigglesome mash up of words and rhythms, Wigglegiggle; Encore Performing Arts with the ever popular High School Musical; Lyngo Theatre with The Curious Adventures of Pinocchio, and St Marys primary school Cloghcor with Children of Lir and Other Tales. There will be plenty of laughter on the cards in the new season as Northern Ireland’s favourite dysfunctional family returns to the Alley Theatre with Give My Head Peace. While Spike Milligan’s comic masterpiece Puckoon will have you in stitches as a new border is drawn through the small village of Puckoon. The fun continues with the sequel to The History of the Troubles (accordin’ to my Da) as legendary writer and producer Martin Lynch brings The History of the Peace (accordin’ to my Ma) to the Alley stage. Not forgetting music fans, JMG Music Group brings two outstanding country music shows from A Night with the Stars, including the likes of John Hogan, Ritchie Remo and Joe Moore, to The Legends of American Country. Tom Kelly presents tributes to John Denver with Eurovision contestant Marc Roberts and Jim Reeves by Gentleman Al Grant. The Alley Theatre facilitates a range of Arts Development Adult and Children’s workshops as well as a vibrant collection of exhibitions in the gallery space. The Strabane Craft Collective pop up shop is also located in the Alley Theatre, with a beautiful array of handcrafted gifts for sale.
JMG Music Group presents: A Night with The Stars Thurs 11th February at 8pm Admission: £16.50
Give My Head Peace Live! Northern Ireland’s favourite dysfunctional family returns to the Alley Theatre and they’ll all be there, Ma, Da, Cal, Dympna, Billy, Uncle Andy and the lovably menacing Pastor Begbie (Paddy Jenkins).
Join six of country music’s most popular stars all on one super show in the company of a live band. Each performing their biggest hits, you will enjoy a night with top stars Ritchie Remo, John Hogan, Frank McCaffrey, Joe Moore, Chris Logue and Keelan. A night not to be missed! The Peace, Love and Understanding Festival Lisa Richards Agency presents: Al Porter is Yours Fri 12th Feb at 8pm in the Alley Bar At 22, Al falls in love twice daily, has ‘completed’ Tinder and is still a mammy’s boy! A parish secretary’s son, Al was supposed to be a Priest – until he slept with one and changed his mind. A socialite on a social welfare budget, Al has been on countless dates, gotten into debt and sued by a Presidential candidate all the while! In this candid hour he pours over the details of it all in his playful style that has been described as council-estate camp.
Da is planning a spectacular commemoration of the 1916 Rising – unless Ma drags him over to London to meet the Queen to pick up her OBE. Uncle Andy digs into Ulster’s glorious past only to find out that his great-great-Uncle Andy was known as the Coward of the Kneebreakers who spent the entire First World war hiding in the attic of Ulster’s dodgiest drinking den. Expect a laugh out loud show with topical humour, up to the minute satire, and stand-up from Tim McGarry. Give My Head Peace – it’s like local politics, only funny. Show contains adult references.
Admission: Free, however, booking is required This compelling production, which comes in the form of a dramatic reading, is the result of many testimonies and truths that have been sourced from members and supporters of the LGBT community in and around the Strabane area. The script itself, developed by LGBT writer and artist Hilary Mc Collum, is a unified gathering of tales of struggle and pride, often against the shadow of the Troubles and the rule of the gun. Moving, poignant and sometimes funny-come experience these lives under the radar.
Arts Care presents: Let the Dance Begin Thurs 25th February at 7.30pm Admission: £3

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to 24-year-old, Paddy Kearney. Where in Strabane did you grow up?
I grew up in Innisfree for five years, and then moved over to Oakland Park where I still am now.
A fond childhood memory?
I could say different things that I’ve done with my mates but every Friday I packed a bag and went out to Burndennet to my granny and granda and didn’t come home till a Sunday.
A Favourite holiday destination? When I was younger it had to be Blackpool, loved the pleasure beach.
A favourite film and why?
Shawshank Redemption because Morgan Freeman is the man!
Favourite kind of music?
When I was younger it was every kind of music but now it has to be country music; I love a good oul jive!
Favourite food?
Spuds, cabbage and bacon, hard the beat!
Something about Strabane that you miss?
Who or what makes you laugh?
I miss that there doesn’t be enough football on the local pitches. There’s no Sunday football in town anymore, which was always good to watch.
An ideal night out?
Someone who makes you proud to be from Strabane and why?
My granda Kearney, when you call up to see him he always makes you smile and laugh. A perfect night out for me is a good ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ with Mr Jason Barr, always a great night’s entertainment.
An ideal night in?
A perfect night in for me is a chippy, junk food and Match of the Day; it keeps me out of the pub haha.
Something you love about Strabane?
When people are struggling Strabane folk always seem to get together and help the person in need; there’s a great community spirit here.
It has to be my uncle Gregory. It doesn’t matter where I am in Ireland they seem to know him and I always be very proud of that.
Would you like your son, daughter or friend to feature in ‘Closer to home?’ If so, email us at: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk Paddy Kearney

1991: It Was a Very Good Year On January 29 this month a Pearl Jam tribute band called Pearl Jem will play the Errigal in Belfast. They’ll be marking 25 years since the release of Pearl Jam’s classic debut album, ‘Ten’. While a few months early with their veneration of the record – ‘Ten’ was released in August, 1991 – celebrating its release is more than justified. By Michael Ferry To this day Pearl Jam remain one of the most influential rock bands out there, and ‘Ten’ laid the seed for many teenage music fans when it arrived. Yes, it’s a cliché, but only because it’s true: ‘Ten’ played a major part in inspiring a generation to lift up the guitar and form a band.
Pearl Jam: Ten
on the cusp of becoming one of the biggest acts in the world; it just depended on the new album. How their new bosses at Warner Brothers must’ve been scratching their heads when the band presented the record that would accelerate them into the musical elite. ‘Out Of Time’ was a departure from the electric guitar driven output of previous R.E.M. records, with a greater focus on acoustic music. Singer Michael Stipe took a back seat on two tracks, letting bassist Mike Mills Primal Scream: Screamadelica take the lead vocals, and one track is practically an instrumental. The band also informed their label that ‘Screamadelica’, released in Septhey would not be touring that year! tember 1991. It saw the band move from their early indie sound and Warner Brothers need not have embrace elements of the house worried though. Despite seemingly music scene so prominent at the trying to attempt commercial sui- time. They also infused elements of cide R.E.M. went on to have massive gospel, dub and retro rock. With DJ global success with ‘Out Of Time’, Andrew Weatherall among those on as it sold over 18 million copies production duties, Primal Scream worldwide, with a handful of hit sin- produced a record steeped in the gles including “Losing My Religion” past, present and future all in one, and “Shiny Happy People”. They tipping their hat to the Stones as became one of the biggest bands much as they did the club culture on the planet, and they just stayed of the early nineties. ‘Screamadelica’ still stands up today, and the home. It wouldn’t happen now! little snippet of album track “Come Nirvana were in a similar position to Together” on BT Sport is now often R.E.M. come 1991. Slowly but surely the only respite we get after another they had been knocking down the insipid 90 minutes watching tedious door of the mainstream, and redefin- overpaid Premier League footballing the position of ‘alternative’ rock ers and listening to Michael Owen! in the process. As with R.E.M. they On stage in Dublin during the first few hours of 1990, U2’s Bono told the audience that after ten years on the road the band would have to “go away and dream it all up again”. At the end of the 1980s U2 had certainly reached a summit of sorts with their exploration into the American sounds that coloured their ‘Rattle and Hum’ album. Their earnestness had reached its limit to the point of parody, and for even the most devoted of U2 fans the band had perhaps taken it too far.
In 1991 they were in good company. In many ways, that year was a musical epiphany for teenagers everywhere. We know all about ‘the summer of love’ that was 1967, the punk explosion of 1976 and the rise of dance culture in 1989. However, now that it’s 25 years on, it’s worth looking back at 1991 and some of Nirvana: Nevermind the iconic records that happened to come out that year; that very spehad moved from an independent cial year! label to a major and were seemingly one record away from crossing over into global success. They released ‘Nevermind’ in September 1991 and ‘grunge’ culture shifted from the trees and came out into the open right across the world. With the loud/quiet dynamic of anthems such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Lithium” and “In Bloom”, Nirvana inspired teens across the world to lift guitars, form bands and generU2: Achtung Baby ally take over the garage and make A change was needed, and where a racket. ‘Nevermind’ has sold over 30 million copies and continues to do rock stars go when they need a change, apart from rehab? Berlin, REM: Out of Time inspire to this day. of course! Bowie did it in the late R.E.M. released their seventh Winning the Mercury Music Prize 70s and, in collaboration with Brian album, ‘Out Of Time’, in March has been the kiss of death for many Eno and producer Tony Visconti, 1991. Two years on from the world acts down the years, but not for its produced a trilogy of groundbreaktour supporting their previous very first winners, Primal Scream, ing albums that are still among the album, ‘Green’, and the band were who won it for their third album, finest in his catalogue. With the face
of Europe, Berlin included, changing at the turn of the decade U2 picked a fine time to be in transition, and even discovered a sense of irony. After the chest pumping, white flag waving ’80s U2 were “ready for the laughing gas”, which was the opening line to “Zoo Station”: the track that introduced a new neon lighted, glam tinged U2 to the world on the album ‘Achtung Baby!’ in November 1991. It was a breath of fresh air for those lost on the raggle taggle U2 of a few years previous, and with tracks like “One”, “Until The End Of The World” and “Mysterious Ways” the album remains arguably U2’s finest to date. The new U2 of the ’90s came about via a number of factors, with one being guitarist the Edge’s love of My Bloody Valentine, who he had been listening to during the recording sessions that made up ‘Achtung Baby’. ‘Loveless’, My Bloody Valentine’s second album, was released the same month as ‘Achtung Baby’, and became one of the most significant and influential releases from the genre that became known as ‘shoegaze’. With its unorthodox mixing, obscured vocals and sonic wall of sound, ‘Loveless’ inspired the future work of the likes of The Cure, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and Guided By Voices. The only downside was having to wait 12 years for a follow-up!
Metallica: Metallica / The Black Album
‘Metallica’ (also known as The Black Album) is the eponymously titled fifth studio album by, you’ve guessed it, Metallica. It was released in August 1991 and went on to become the band’s best-selling album; it even produced five singles: “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam”, and “Sad but True”. It proved to be a major crossover album for Metallica, with a greater focus on melody while maintaining their signature thrash sound.
RHCP: Blood, Sugar, Sex Magic
of fandom. It was a most peculiar yet colourfully creative year that saw many listeners embracing sounds and genres that were previously out of limits. The clear-cut divide of punk, mod, skin, indie, raver and rocker no longer seemed relevant after 1991. Other great releases that year included Soundgarden, ‘Badmotorfinger’; Red Hot Chilli Peppers, ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’; Teenage Fanclub, ‘Bandwagonesque’; Blur, ‘Leisure’ and, of course, Guns N’ Roses, ‘Use Your Illusion I’ and ‘Use Your Illusion II’. Looking back now, it is also a timely reminder of the power and influence that an album can have.
Death of the Album? While not quite on life-support today, the relevance of the album has certainly been marginalised, which is a shame. The younger generation cannot really be blamed as they’ve grown up in an era where music has practically no physicality at all. Its place in the conversation has dipped way behind the silence of the smart phone’s white deathly glow. With the name of the song, never mind the artist, barely remembered, what hope for a collection of songs placed together in a specific order in the 21st century? Seeing young people dig through the album racks in places like Cool Discs in Derry gives us hope, however. Albums are a little bit of your history, your life story, your memories, your highs, your lows. A sleeve can be your personal Mona Lisa; your collection can be your private art stash.
Download Culture
Download culture cannot compete with such a profound sense of being, existing and feeling. It’s a thing of beauty not exclusive to 1991, of course, but looking back 25 years ago and to the amazing records that were released that year simply proves that the album is something ‘The Black Album’ was just one of to passionately embrace, both litera number of records released in ally and metaphorically. Let’s see it 1991 that blurred the boundaries continue.

Mindfulness One of the ‘buzz-words’ of recent times has to be Mindfulness. We hear about it, read about it, perhaps we even talk about it with family or friends, and mindfulness classes seem to be popping up all over the place. Do we, however, know what it is or what it is all about? Is it simply enough to be ‘cool’ that we are aware of mindfulness without exploring its origins and benefits to determine if it is useful or not in 2016? I believe it is worth exploring and I know the benefits as it has been a godsend during those darker, difficult periods in my life. There are many definitions of what mindfulness is and the following description is just one. “Mindfulness is an ancient Buddhist practice which is very relevant for life today. Mindfulness is a very simple concept. Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. This increases awareness, clarity and acceptance of our present-moment reality.” Now how can such a concept be useful to me today in the dark January days of 2016? By now I am sure that New Year resolutions have been well and truly tested. Perhaps we have fallen once again by the wayside with those well intentioned promises – and maybe not. Could mindfulness help us keep doing what we know is good for us in those times when can have difficulty following through? Let’s explore this idea. Imagine bringing mindfulness into our everyday eating for example. Eating more healthily is a common New Year resolution for many people however it can be easy to ‘fall off the wagon’, as it were. Most of us already know things that are good for us to eat and other things that may

not be so healthy, however it seems that we tend to choose unhealthy food more often than not. Well, ask yourself this question. How many of my five senses do I use to eat? We have five senses (at least), seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, tasting. These are also referred to as visual, auditory, olfactory, kinesthetic, and gustatory senses. Would you eat something you do not like the look of (visual), for example? What if you had something in your mouth that didn’t sound right like you were eating something soft and you heard (auditory) a crunch? If the food in front of you had a funny smell (olfactory), would you eat it? What if it simply did not feel (kinesthetic) right in your mouth or perhaps it didn’t taste properly (gustatory), what would you do? It seems without realizing we use all five of our

senses when we eat and this fact can allow us to enjoy food and the ritual of having a meal even more. Have a go at realizing your senses at work when you eat and enjoy everything as you do. In order to do this it is best to eat slowly without any distractions such as TV or reading, and chew the food many times. Digestion starts in the mouth so chewing will allow your body to register when you are full whereas ‘horsing’ it into you bypasses those vital satiation sensors and you eat more than you need. When you feel full stop eating regardless what is left on the plate, (you can use those left - overs again), and you will be amazed at the results over time of simply being mindful as you eat. Until the next time Tom Herron

New Year skin rejuvenation After all the Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve celebrations, mince pies and Christmas cocktails , January is the perfect time to revitalise your skin and implement some new beauty rules. I have put together my TOP 5 beauty products to give your skin that much needed glow after the festive season. 1. Cleanse, Cleanse,Cleanse
We all know how vital it is to cleanse, to remove the days debris from skin and to clear away bacteria, however we have all been guilty of it, heading off to bed with the makeup still on, but no more of that.
I recommend Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil, it can be used on wet or dry skin, it reaches deep within your pores to thoroughly remove makeup, push pump into hand to disperse and and thoroughly to dissolve make up and rinse off.

In a bid to help disabled drivers in Strabane and the North West keep mobile, local Vauxhall dealership, Eakin Bros, is on a quest to raise awareness of eligibility for the Motability scheme amongst local residents. The Motability scheme enables disabled drivers to use part, or all, of their disability allowance to lease a brand new car*. The retailer’s Motability services include vehicle adaptations, aftersales service and access to other Motability products, to ensure worry-free motoring. There are no waiting lists, credit checks or assessment procedures to go through. Customers don’t even have to have a drivers’ licence; they can nominate two drivers, meaning parents or carers can apply to the scheme on behalf of a child aged three years or more.
