How to play your part this St. Patrick’s Day
Your local travel agent...
Gallagher Travel Whether you are looking for just a lifestyle break, a flight to London, or an around the world cruise, we can bring the world to you. Let us take the strain out of your trip, by providing you with low cost flights, tailor made holidays, a cruise, or a ski holiday. We are your local travel agent, providing quality, service, choice, and value at the end of an email or telephone
The Strabane St Patrick’s Day Committee have already held several meetings in order to make arrangements for the ninth consecutive parade to be held in Strabane and are appealing to everyone in the community to lend their help and support. They are especially appealing to any Marching Bands wishing to participate in the parade in Strabane this year to please register their interest as soon as possible as arrangements regarding the filing of the parade have to be submitted to the relevant authorities. They are also making a big appeal to the business community in Strabane to help play their part by decorating their premises in the build up to the event. A spokesperson said: “All types of groups, community, sporting, cultural, motor, farming, schools and businesses from right across the Strabane district and East Donegal are encouraged to come along and participate in the parade, it’s a great way to show to the large captive audience that comes out to view the parade exactly who you are and
what you’re doing in your local community. “The parade has now been ongoing since 2006 and going on the success of previous years we are hoping that it will once again exceed our expectations. Our aim as always is to instil community spirit and to evoke peoples pride in our town and district on a St Patrick’s Day as opposed to people leaving the area.” Arts and Crafts classes are set to get underway shortly to assist groups taking part and all groups are welcome to attend such. The next meeting of the organising committee will take place on Thursday, February 6 in Strabane Library, Railway Road and everyone is invited to attend. Alternatively if you can’t make it to the meeting then please contact any member of the committee who will provide you with updates.

Addressing the SDLP Executive at an emergency meeting in Belfast on Saturday, the assemblyman supported his Party’s Health Spokesperson, Fearghal McKinney MLA, in a plea to all SDLP Representatives and party activists to campaign against changes implemented by local Health Trusts, which Mr Byrne said had stripped hospitals of vital services, denying people critical care. From the closure of A&E units in local hospitals, to pressures on hard working front line staff and the shortage of doctors, Mr Byrne said it was time to stop the obliteration of health services for local people and make the Health Minister Edwin Poots stand up and be counted and explain why ‘Transforming Your Care’ wasn’t working and will never work. Thus far it has only succeeded in scaremongering the sick and those dependant of care. The MLA said his colleagues in Westminster and at Stormont had been raising the matter consistently and would continue to do so, and at Council level too. Mr Byrne said the party is putting health care and the needs of people at the top of its agenda and intend fighting hard to ensure the failures in our health system are acknowledged and dealt with as a matter of urgency. The SDLP Health Spokesperson Fearghal McKinney and the SDLP across the North have asked that those concerned should contact SDLP Representatives. “We want you all to tell us about the problems you have faced with the health service, campaigns, motions in councils, so that we don’t just have a voice on health but a whole chorus echoing right across the north on the failings and crisis at the heart of your health service.” Mr Byrne said; “Over the coming weeks the

SDLP will be discussing health in the Assembly and across the North. Dolores Kelly and Fearghal McKinney MLA have tabled a Motion scheduled for the 28th January to discuss the crisis in our A&E services and numerous questions have been submitted to the Health Minister.” “We need to take the health debate to council’s right across the north. We know you’re concerned, we know the public is concerned and, in that context, how dare the Health Minister tell stressed patients and staff that there is no crisis and furthermore, that it is their fault. The SDLP in Strabane have been active in challenging recent proposals to close Greenfield Residential Care home, we will continue to defend these vital services and actively campaign against these changes to our health care system.” “The SDLP want the public to know that this is a crisis. It’s a crisis of confidence, a crisis of management, a financial crisis, a crisis a day, and our job is to drag the Minister onto that ground and to force him to recognise that his agenda and his plans are not working.”
We won’t give up on pensions Local Representative and SDLP candidate for Sperrin, Patrick Leonard has expressed serious disappointment the party’s efforts to protect and fight for fair pension rights for more than 200,000 public sector workers were not supported by the DUP, UUP and Alliance. Mr Leonard was speaking after The Public Service Pension Bill passed its consideration stage in the Assembly after lengthy debate last week. The SDLP tabled a number of amendments to the Bill in an attempt to “give the best possible voice to the 210,000 public servants”. During debate, the SDLP warnedthe changes could lead to less money circulating in the Northern Ireland economy as retiring civil servants have less financial power, while young workers could face reduced opportunities because more public sector employees are working longer. “The SDLP tabled the amendments to the Bill, which we see as another attack on public servants because, largely, the effect of the Bill for public servants will be to pay more, work longer and get less at the end. Retirement may become a thing of the past.” Mr Leonard said trade unions had raised concerns regarding the “transparency and fairness” of some of the changes proposed, pointing out the scheme would be controlled by the department of finance, and ultimately the Treasury without recourse to the Assembly. Mr Leonard also warned raising the pension age would have a “significant impact” on the Northern Ireland economy.Joe Byrne MLA added: “Sadly, our amendments to protect the pension rights of public servants did not receive

the necessary support from the DUP, the UUP or the Alliance, however, the SDLP will be examining the mechanisms available to us in the coming days. We will certainly not be giving up the fight on public sector pensions.”

Derg Community Stalwart Awarded British Empire Medal 2013 came to a delightful conclusion for Castlederg community worker, John Doherty, as he was recognised for voluntary services to the community in the Derg with a British Empire Medal (BEM). It is the second Royal honour in the space of a few months for the 71-year-old retired Industrial Engineer and Factory Manager, after also being part of the Ulster American Project delegation who travelled to Buckingham Palace for a Royal garden party in September, after the Castlederg group received a ‘Queen’s award’ (a group equivalent of an MBE). A delighted John spoke to the ‘Herald’ last week and we asked him about his reaction when he learned that he was to be honoured. “Obviously I was absolutely delighted. You can’t help but ask yourself ‘why me?’ because anything I’ve done for the town of Castlederg I did simply because I love my town and its people,” he stressed.
Are you a former pupil of St Colman’s High School, Strabane? Were you taught by the late Mr Willie Breslin? If so, you may be able to contribute to a book about the former history teacher, set to be written by his daughter, journalist and novelist, Leona O’Neill. To help with the book, Leona is now looking to hear stories about her father from his former pupils or former friends.

John was also responsible for the removal of the barriers that blocked off the town centre of the Derg. “I went round to every person in the town, John has been a passionate advocate of cross-com- there were 124 families at that time, and asked munity projects. Out of all his achievements, it is his cross-community work that John is most pleased with. “I’ve always been very passionate about projects that bring the communities together and I will continue to do so for as long as I can,” he promised.
Mr Breslin was one of Derry’s best-known civil rights campaigners and founder member of the Derry Labour Party. As well as being a prominent member of the civil rights movement, he was a well-respected teacher, and worked at St Colman’s High School in for 35 years before retiring. He passed away in 2009 after a lengthy illness. When news of his passing reached Strabane, hundreds of former pupils took to social media sites to pay their tributes to a teacher that clearly had a positive impact on many young lives in Strabane. At present, Leona is in the process of completing the follow up to her 2011 novel, ‘Emerald Witch’. As soon as that is done she plans to start into the book about her father, hopefully with the help of some of his former pupils. “It’ll focus on the Civil Rights Movement right up to his years as a teacher at St Colman’s, Strabane. Everyone I meet has a story to tell about my Dad and how he helped them. Some of his students said he stopped them joining the IRA in the 70s, another said my Dad crawled across the car park at the school to rescue him after a gun fight broke out there between the army and the IRA. He stopped numerous riots outside the school, as well as actually being in the history books that he taught. So I need some help. I’d love to

hear stories about my Dad from former pupils or former friends. I won’t use anyone’s real name in the book; your stories will help me shape the storyline,” explained Leona. While based on her father’s life, the book is set to be a novel. “It’ll be set around the time ‘the Troubles’ started because that would tie in my Dad’s work with the civil rights movement and his teaching. He’d be teaching during the day up in Strabane, then at night he and Nell McCafferty would be over at the abandoned army barracks moving Catholic families from Creggan in to squat in the army houses, hot wiring the electricity or organising iconic Civil Rights marches never a dull moment! I’ve wanted to do this for a few years now,” Leona insisted. If you feel you can contribute to Leona’s novel on her father, you can contact her via her email: leona.oneill@hotmail.com.

A Netflix Offer You Can’t Refuse When Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band rocked Belfast on a sunny July evening last summer, the audience became a sea of signs and placards. During ‘Dancing in the Dark’ ‘the Boss’ spotted one that read, “BRUCE, I WANNA DANCE WITH SILVIO DANTE!” Seconds later, the lady with the sign was doing just that. To the uninitiated, ‘Silvio Dante’ was the sharp-dressed night-club owner and ‘Consigliere’ to mob boss ‘Tony Soprano’ in the classic HBO drama series ‘The Sopranos’ and was portrayed by veteran E-Street guitarist, Stevie Van Zandt. That ‘Silvio’ could steal Springsteen’s thunder during a song where most woman in the audience Steve Van Zandt who plays mobster Frank Tagliano in Norwegian TV series ‘Lilyhammer’. want their ‘Courtney Cox moment’ with ‘the Boss’, speaks volumes of the character. Filming completed in April 2013, and season two premiered on December 13, 2013 on Netflix. Overall, Van Zandt doesn’t veer too far from the characteristics that made up his ‘Silvio’ character in ‘The Sopranos’, yet that is where all comparisons with the iconic HBO series end. ‘Lilyhammer’ succeeds because it doesn’t try to emulate ‘The Sopranos’ – an impossible task. While it does have its fair share of violence, ‘Lilyhammer’ is thematically lighter with each episode plot unravelling and concluding in a much more conventional manner. If you’re looking for something to match the deep psychoanalytical undertones that coloured ‘The Sopranos’, you’ll be disappointed with ‘Lilyhammer’. If your TV-palate allows for a more traditional, yet still occasionally off-beat and blackly comical drama then ‘Lilyhammer’ could just be your tipple. Check the first two seasons out now on Netflix. With Van Zandt currently off the road he signed on for a third season of the show and filming has already begun, so there’s plenty more to come from ‘Frank Tagliano/ Giovanni Henriksen’.

Strabane woman receives OBE for ‘Planning and voluntary service’ Strabane woman, Mary McIntyre, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. Recognised for “Planning and voluntary service” to Strabane District Caring Services, Mary, who is the Acting Chief Planner for Northern Ireland, was both delighted and shocked at being nominated.
“I was very, very surprised,” she told the ‘Herald’ from her home in Strabane. “Planning isn’t really the most popular of professions so you don’t expect that kind of recognition.” Over the past three decades, Mary has been a familiar face across the planning sector. She was also at the forefront of the preparations for the City of Culture year in Derry, taking in the redevelopment of Ebrington and the development of the Peace Bridge. She is also a founding member of Strabane District Caring, taking on the role in 1986 – a difficult time, to say the least, for Strabane. “Unemployment was very high and it was just a bad time all round both politically and economically in Northern Ireland,” Mary explained. “That is why the organisation was set up, to try and create jobs and provide services for the elderly and disabled at the same time. We used the Action For Community Employment Scheme (ACE) to employ people, which led to the establishing of a luncheon club, which is still running and a Meals on Wheels delivery service for the elderly. We also had people painting, decorating and gardening for the elderly and disabled and we had a day-care centre. We’ve now diversified into other aspects, like domiciliary care but at its peak we had about 250 people employed, which was a significant number of people in Strabane in those days.” Looking back, Mary has enjoyed the challenges her work has brought, ultimately because there has always been an opportunity to make a difference.
Strabane’s Mary McIntyre who recently received an OBE.
“If you don’t like being bored, planning is a good thing to get into as no two days are ever the same,” she told us. “Planning is one of those things where people don’t notice if it’s done well but people do notice if something doesn’t work. I worked on really interesting projects during my time in Manchester before we came back to Ireland. I worked on the Salford Quays project, where derelict docklands have now been regenerated. I’ve also done some work in Fermanagh, which is a beautiful place. I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been able to work in very interesting places and try to make a difference.” Now Mary’s voluntary work with Strabane Caring Services has seen her gain recognition for her efforts thanks to a nomination that was carried out anonymously. “It sounds like a cliché but it is really humbling to think that somebody who I don’t know has put me forward for this and that it has been accepted. I’m simply thrilled,” she concluded.

‘Tinnies’ Launch ‘Let the Dance Begin Project’ The Let the Dance Begin project was last week at the ‘Let the Dance Begin’ sculpture in Strabane, known locally as the ‘Tinnies’. It will be a six-week innovative health and well-being pilot project in Strabane Town aiming to locate creativity at the heart of Strabane’s Education, Health and Business Community, improving the health and well-being of the citizens of the town. Two of Northern Ireland’s leading Arts in Education and Health Charities, The Pushkin Trust and Arts Care, designed and are facilitating this very special interagency Arts delivery. The project is supported by the Public Health Agency, Strabane District Council and the Western Health and Social Care Trust. The project hopes to inspire, give voice to and contribute to a new vision for the people, youth and children of Strabane. A key element will be the invitation of Master Artists/Musicians/Creative Writers/Storytellers/Dancers to facilitate
workshops in schools, older people’s residential services, early year’s programmes, community groups and local business. The Master artists from Arts Care and the Pushkin Trust will creatively skill-build local Strabane artists as part of the project. Over the six weeks from January 20, the artists and environmentalists will be immersing their practice in the town, setting up art tables in unusual places, hosting art exhibitions, facilitating music, dance, creative writing and film-making workshops. One of the key strands to the project is the large-scale dance and disability project that involves local school children and adults with and without disability. The final dance performance/ exhibition with around 100 dancers will be held at the Alley Theatre, Strabane on March 10. There is an expectation that the project will provide a model of Arts, Health and Well-being that can be translated into any small town or community setting both locally and internationally. At the core of the project, the artists will teach the creative skills to school children, teachers, healthcare staff, service users and community groups, carefully unfolding the creativity of the different aspects of living in Strabane and hopefully opening new visions for the future health and well-being of the town and it citizens. At the launch The Duchess of Abercorn said: “The Pushkin Trust exists to promote the creative voice and the creative spirit in children and adults. It will be exciting to witness the unfolding of a creative community over the next number of weeks in Strabane as we leave behind the dark days of winter to herald the fresh growth of spring.”

Treats in store for brides at Kee’s Hotel The Vintage Wedding Specialists since 1845 ‘One wedding a day’...The Kee’s Way It may be a rare success story in Ireland, especially for family-run businesses, but Kee’s Hotel in Stranorlar has recently celebrated 120 years of ownership of this well-known and highly rated establishment in Donegal. Having been bought by the great grandfather of the current management team in 1892, the hotel has been in constant operation since then, providing exceptional traditional Irish hospitality. So with all these years of experience in welcoming guests and catering to their every needs, it is no surprise that brides and grooms have been choosing Kee’s as their preferred wedding venue for generations, and very often generations within the same local families. With a constant refurbishment plan in place, the hotel’s banqueting facilities are on a par with the best in the county and the recent creation of the Terrace Garden, leading directly from the Ballroom, enhances the existing excellent facilities. With original features such as the arched door entrance, a lantern-lit covered walkway from hotel to Ballroom and the lovely wrought iron pagoda, guests can now enjoy outdoor drinks receptions. These interesting architectural features create the perfect backdrop for any wed-
ding photographer. In the evening, the Terrace becomes a romantic and atmospheric space. Kee’s Hotel also introduced a new Vintage Wedding Package offering incredible value at just €39.50. Available Off Season & Midweek for 2014 & 2015, it includes red carpet & cocktail reception, tea/coffee on arrival with biscuits or scones. Also included is a five course meal with wine and evening reception with finger buffet. Additional elements built into the price are chair covers and bows, bridal suite and bedrooms for parents, two night break with dinner on the 1st Anniversary. Kee’s Hotel, Stranorlar, Co. Donegal

Choosing Your Wedding Car Call: 07809398927 info@voguelimohire.com
Limo Hire
You may not realise it, but your wedding car is one of the most important items to ensure your wedding day runs smoothly. Your wedding day is all about running to schedule, if you are late to the church or chapel the ceremony will be late, the photographer will be rushed and the booking for the reception venue will run long, and this ripple effect could have you playing catch up all day! Therefore, there are a few things you need to remember when choosing your wedding car.
Choose a Wedding Car Specialist
No.1 for Wedding & Limo Hire Prompt Professional & Courteous Drivers WE CATER FOR...
ALSO AVAILABLE: Black or White Range Rover & White Chrysler 300
Club Nights Weddings School Proms Anniversaries Concerts Birthdays Theatres
Corporate Events Hen Nights Children’s Parties Stag Nights Airport Services Sporting Events Sightseeing Tours
www.voguelimohire.com
When booking your wedding cars or limos, you are running a big risk by choosing a limo company that does not specialise in weddings. This is very important as a ‘wedding car specialist’ will simply know all the important things that matter like professionalism, punctuality, etiquette and class. Simple things such as a courteous Chauffer are paramount for a classy wedding day for the bride and groom. Make sure you start looking for the wedding cars you want early, around 4-8 months before the wedding. Then when you find the cars you want, put a deposit on them then and secure them.
Eyes Wide Open Make sure you actually see the cars you are hiring for yourself; sit in them, examine the paintwork and upholstery and keep a nose out for any unpleasant odours. Also, this should be done before you sign the contract.
Here Comes the Bridesmaids When hiring your wedding cars you may get a shock at the price for hiring three or four top of the range limos for yourself and your attendants. Therefore, the current tread is towards a fancier car for the bride and groom and more simple cars for the rest of the bridal party.
Ask Around
Be Noticed
Ask people you know who have been married recently about their wedding car experience and either learn from their mistakes or follow in their satisfied footsteps. Likewise, ask your photographer is they can recommend a limo hire company as they are likely to have contacts within the wedding industry.
White may be the traditional colour for wedding cars but it may not be such a good choice for the car of the bride and groom as the effect of a bride with a white dress next to a white car is going to be diminished. Therefore, choose a colour which matches your colour scheme or even a two toned limo.

Double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Andrew Maxwell is back in Ballybofey this February with a brand new blissfully funny show. Packed full of fearlessly intelligent topical observations, delivered in his animated and inclusive style, ‘Banana Kingdom’ recently completed a sell-out run in one of the Edinburgh Fringe’s biggest venues (playing to over 10,000 people) and a hit run in London’s Soho Theatre. Andrew has sold out every Edinburgh run since 2005, playing to over 70,000 comedy fans in that festival alone. A familiar face on our TV screens, you’ve seen him star on The Panel (RTE) One Night Stand (Dave), Monumental , Conspiracy Roadtrip and Live at the Apollo (BBC), 8 Out of 10 Cats (Channel 4), John Bishop’s Only Joking (Sky) and Celebrity Juice Tues Jan 28th
Drew Holcomb & the Neighbours A stunning four piece mixing full throttle Americana with an introspective singer/songwriter approach. We got our hands on a copy of their latest album – Good Light– a couple of months ago and it’s become a firm favourite - think Jackson Browne in his pomp with a bit of classic Springsteen and you’ll get the picture. It’s Indie Americana with great melodies and savage hooks and we can’t recommend it highly enough. “I think it’s in the running for my album of the year!” - No Depression Wed Jan 29th
Martin Tourish is an accordionist and composer whose work spans the Irish traditional, jazz, popular and classical genres. Since his last appearance in the Balor Theatre, he has played the Royal Albert Hall with The Chieftains, the O2 Arena Dublin with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, the National Concert Hall with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and toured Europe with Altan. Having composed for each of these ensembles, he is returning to release his highly anticipated Krista Detor second album ‘Under a Red Night Sky’.

Gaze Is Ghost: The End of the Beginning Strabane musician Laura McGarrigle released her debut solo album online in January of last year. Going under the name Gaze Is Ghost, her album ‘Plume’ garnered wide acclaim for its arresting beauty, ambitious piano-led structures and nocturnal intimacy. Having previously based herself in Paris, Edinburgh and London, she is now based in Cambridge. However, she recently returned Strabane over the festive season for her first performance in her hometown in four years. The ‘Herald’ was delighted to catch up with one of the most intriguing artists to emerge from Strabane in recent times just before she took to the stage in Dicey Rileys. She spoke of her delight at how ‘Plume’ was received and also, as forward thinking artist, indicated the future of Gaze Is Ghost, which is set to become a duo project. “I was really pleasantly surprised by how well received the album was, especially in the UK,” she tells us. “When I released it I was still in France and I didn’t do much on the promotion side of things. However, it still seemed to gather momentum in England, which was quite nice. I don’t really dwell too much on the music I’ve recorded. I tend to write, record and then put it behind me and look to try something new. So hopefully the next thing I record will be something different to ‘Plume’.” It seems certain that the next project will be a departure, as Gaze Is Ghost is set to become a collaboration rather than a solo project. “At the minute I’m working with an electronic musician and guitarist called James Duffy, so Gaze Is Ghost is now developing more into a duo than a solo thing. For me personally, I think it’s great to collaborate and it’s great to be challenged by someone else. ’Plume’ was an exercise in composition and arrangement but I think it’s more natural to let things grow organically from performing and working with musicians,” Laura explains. As a female artist, comparisons to artists like Kate Bush seem almost inevitable but Laura views this more as a compliment than anything else. “I’m certainly flattered when people mention artists like Kate Bush and Joanna Newsom, both of whom I love. If the names mentioned weren’t so flattering that would be a different story,” she laughs. “But usually people guess correctly when it comes to artists I admire and respect. When it comes to people like Kate Bush and Joanna Newsom I’d say we share the same love for unusual song structures and harmonies.” And what of Laura’s desire not to dwell on her

recorded work? Does she subscribe to the view that a recorded piece of music belongs to that time and place and the music itself can go many other places in the future? “I’d definitely agree with that. Also, the fantastic musicians I worked with on ‘Plume’ when I was in Edinburgh obviously can’t be there when I’m out playing live because they’re in Scotland and I move around so much, so I have to tailor my music when performing live. I may have to alter the piano playing or if I’m playing with a guitarist, change it in that way too. Ultimately it keeps things fresh. I’d hate the thought of having to play note-for-note what I’ve recorded. I also don’t like to dictate to musicians what they should be playing. The recordings can be a guide and offer a feeling and if they can get that feeling they’re free to improvise around it. The violinist I’m playing with here in Strabane, Brigid McCafferty, gets that completely and a lot of what she plays is improvised. So I’m lucky enough to
have met great musicians who can interpret the music in their own way. The collaborative process is a great thing,” enthuses Laura. While she clearly loves to challenge herself as an artist, we wonder if there’s a conflict between Gaze Is Ghost as ‘Art Music’ and Gaze Is Ghost as ‘Pop Music’. “There’s a fine line between the two I find,” she says. “You can strive to be experimental but you worry if you are being a bit self-indulgent and experimental for the sake of it. In the same sense, there can be a lot of restrictions in pop music but it can also be great fun and it can be nice to have that versechorus-verse-chorus structure. It is effective and it’s a good one to follow but sometimes you just want to push the boat out. But I do love pop and I do love a catchy melody so I don’t think I’ll ever veer too far into the experimental, particularly as I do put a lot of emphasis on the melody.” Having travelled a lot in recent years between Edinburgh, Paris, London and now Cambridge, does she believe that her travels have inspired and informed her work? “That’s a tough one to answer. I guess the stuff you do is a product of what you’ve done. I could’ve met a bagpipe player in Edinburgh and ‘Plume’ may have taken a different direction and become a trad album,” she laughs. “Environment can inspire to a certain extent,” she adds, “but at the end of the day it has to come from you. Personally I think I was probably moving a bit too much because for me one of the most creative aspects is the musicians you are working with and it’s great to stay in one place long enough to build a long standing working relationship with them. Constantly moving may have been inspiring but each time you move city you have to find musicians again and personally I just don’t like playing on my own anymore. I find it boring. I like to play off other musicians and improvise and so forth.” Now that her travels have brought her to Cambridge and with Gaze Is Ghost developing further, she has no plans to jump on a boat or plane any time soon. “I plan to stay in Cambridge now for the foreseeable future and with Gaze Is Ghost now becoming a duo project I’m really looking forward to seeing where it goes,” she concludes. We are too! After a wonderful 2013, 2014 is promising to be even more special for Gaze Is Ghost. We look forward to hearing the new sounds. Whatever road they take, we will happily follow. Gaze Is Ghost’s debut album ‘Plume’ can be purchased on her Bandcamp page: http://gazeisghost. bandcamp.com/
Gerard i2 Kicks Off 2014 With Dicey’s Gig! After another great year, which led to his summer dancefloor anthem ‘Mash ‘Em’ hitting the daytime airwaves of BBC Radio One, Strabane Hip Hop MC Gerard i2 launches his attack on 2014 with a hometown gig in Dicey Riley’s on Saturday, February 1. To date Gerard has three independent album releases already under his belt and a forth (and fifth!) in the pipeline. Now a ferociously intense live performer, aided by a mix of old skool beats, vintage samples and additional electronica, Gerard i2 delivers a live show that is now bigger, louder and nastier than before, with a fearless backbone cemented by the live drums of Chris ‘Smokes’ Patton. As one of the first big live original music night’s of 2014 it’s certain to kick the year off in proper roof tearing fashion and with a few special guests in the mix too. Expect all the big hitter anthems such as ‘My House’, ‘Mash ‘Em’ and ‘Bring It All Back’ and loads more along the way. Doors open at 10.30pm and admission is £4. The gig is strictly over-18s.

Julian Cope over reacting a bit?
Organisers of this month’s Out to Lunch Festival in Belfast were left stunned just before Christmas when they received an email advising them that Julian Cope would not perform at the Black Box in the Cathedral Quarter because of the “current security situation in Belfast”. A statement from the musician said: “It is with regret that I feel obliged to cancel my forthcoming Belfast show of January 16 due to the current security situation there and the logistics involved. “I’m very sorry about this.” Cope’s decision follows an escalation in attacks in recent months, including a series of bomb attacks in Belfast city centre, so we can understand his concern, can’t we? While endless numbers of artists play Belfast on a weekly basis without fear or intimidation of any kind, we can still understand the concerns of the former Teardrop Explodes frontman, can’t we? We can name any number of bands and artists who happily performed in Belfast during a much darker period in our history but we can still understand if an envelope pushing cultural commentator like Cope still gets cold feet, can’t we? Enough of the nonsense! In December past, Black Sabbath played in Belfast, so if it’s good enough for Ozzy it’s good enough for Julian Cope. To quote the man himself, he needs to put his head back in the clouds and shut his mouth!

The Chrysalis Cove Sinead Lynch Certified Angel Card Reader, Integrated Energy Therapy Practioner
Usui Reiki Master/Teacher
Start the New You in 2014! Leave the ‘old’ stuff behind and embrace the new opportunities that this New Year may unfold for you. New challenges, new experiences and the chance to finally put to rest old behaviours and patterns that keep us stagnant and unable to move on. Take care of you in 2014 and follow your dreams!
What is Integrated Energy Therapy (IET)? Integrated Energy Therapy (IET) is healing with the Angels and its one of the next generation, power energy therapy systems that gets “the issues out of your tissues” for good. IET was developed at the Centre of Being by Stevan J. Thayer (Reiki Master & Author of the book ‘Interview with an Angel’.) IET uses the Violet Angelic Ray brought to us by the nine healing Angels of the energy field to work directly with our 12 strand spiritual DNA IET is a channeled energy and the Practioner is a vessel through which this Angelic energy is channeled for the purpose of healing. IET supports you in safely and gently releasing limiting energy patterns of your past, empowering and balancing your life in the present and helps you reach for the stars into your future.
What causes energy blocks within the body? As we journey through life the flow of energy can become restricted or limited. These restrictions are known as blocks. Some causes of energy blocks are, physical trauma, surgery, disease, exhaustion, starvation, emotional crisis, suppressed feelings, stress, fear, self-limiting beliefs, and karma. Energy blocks limit our experience of life, and can result in lack of spontaneity/procrastination, energy depletion, mental and spiritual well- being.
Benefits of IET Increases your sense of wellbeing, life purpose, happiness, creativity, health and prosperity. Painlessly identifies and releases deeply suppressed feelings and your core cellular memories. Helps create more fulfilling relationships in all areas of your life. Helps you discover and live your soul’s mission in life. Supports self-healing on a physical, emotional, mental & spiritual level. Provides gentle yet powerful support for survivors of childhood trauma such as physical, mental & sexual abuse also addictive behaviours such as alcohol.Increases your connection to the Divine and Angels.
What happens in a an IET session…
Every thought, every emotion, every event is stored in our cellular memory. IET is a gentle way to locate where these emotions are stored and through the violet Angelic ray the lower vibrational energy is removed and replaced by a higher vibrational energy. During an IET session the client is fully clothed on a therapy table. Next IET is systematically directed into a specific area of your body’s cellular memory by means of gentle therapeutic touch, and powerful IET techniques are used to gently get ‘the issues out of tissues’ for good. Nine healing Angels work in different areas of the body and with a different cellular memory. Archangel Ariel oversees the session helping the client to release limitation, Archangel Raphael releases guilt, Archangel Gabriel releases distrust, Archangel Celestin releases shame and threat, Archangel Faith releases should’s and should not’s (regret), Archangel Cassiel releases heartache and betrayal, Archangel Daniel releases resentment, anger & judgment, Archangel Sarah releases powerlessness, Archangel Michael releases fear. At the end of an IET session clients will feel relaxed, refreshed & calm. It is a beautiful peaceful experience.

Country Star to perform for one night only @ The Alley
Pure Country with Robert Mizzell and the Country Kings Country music fans are in for a treat as country star Robert Mizzell and his band the Country Kings comes to the Alley for one night only on Thursday 30th January. A native of the southern state of Louisiana in the United States of America, country singer Robert Mizzell has made Ireland his home for the past seventeen years. With his five-piece band, The Country Kings, he has risen to become the premier country music act in Ireland, regularly filling venues across the country. The calibre of musicians in The Country Kings and the range of instruments they employ, mean Robert’s live performances consistently replicate the high quality sound of his recordings. To date, Robert has released six albums containing traditional country music tracks. In November 2008, he released his first DVD entitled ‘The Louisiana Man’, filmed on location in Ireland and Kentucky. This DVD has achieved excellent sales figures since its release and continues to do so, exceeding all expectations. During 2008, three of Robert’s songs achieved top position on the European Country Music Association chart, a first for any Irish based artist. Another of his recordings ‘If It’s Gonna Rain’ is currently making steady progress towards Number One in this chart. Robert & The Country Kings recently completed their first Scottish tour, bringing their style of country music to new audiences. On 10th April 2009, Robert and The Country Kings topped the bill at the Caithness Country Music Festival in Halkirk to great acclaim. On Easter Saturday they performed at The Invergordon Social Club and at The New Inn Hotel, Ellon on Easter Sunday. Robert and The Country Kings eagerly await their return visit to Scotland in October 2009.

In March 2009 Robert embarked on a ten day Heart of Texas tour to the Lonestar State, visiting such iconic cities as Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Brady. As part of this tour, Robert performed at a number of venues including all three shows at ‘The Heart Of Texas Music Association’ weekend in Brady. Here he shared the bill with eminent country artists including Moe Bandy and Leona Williams.
In addition, during his time in Brady, Robert was invited to perform at the Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree, broadcast live throughout America and worldwide via the Internet. This show was recorded for future DVD release. This was Robert’s second performance at the Midnite Jamboree, having previously shared the stage with country star Connie Smith during a recording of the show in Nashville last year.
During this tour, Robert performed in elite venues including The Midnite Jamboree, The Cowboy Church, and The Carter Family Fold, and was invited to perform the opening thirty-minute segment at the 1500 seat Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge. He was also delighted to be asked to perform in Dyess, Arkansas in the same hall where Johnny Cash sang. The Dolly Parton Story @ the Alley The UK’s leading tribute to Dolly Parton is coming to the Alley Theatre on Saturday 22nd February at 8pm. The Dolly Parton Story is a two hour journey through the sensational career of one of country music’s most successful ladies. Dolly Parton’s career has spanned over 50 years and her most celebrated material features in this show, from her early country classics such as ‘Coat of Many Colours’ and ‘Joshua’, through to the later smash hits such as ‘Jolene’, ‘Islands in the Stream’, ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘9 to 5’. Andrea Pattison has been a professional singer for many years and in that time, many people have commented on her similarity in sound and style to Dolly Parton. As a life long fan of Dolly’s, Andrea always took this as a huge compliment, but it was only recently that she decided to use that aspect of her talent to reach a wider audience. Now in its fifth year this great show has built up a huge following around the UK and will be venturing further in the near future. With an all live four piece band providing the sound and an array of amazing, rhinestone encrusted replica costumes, this is a real treat for any Dolly Parton fan. As well as celebrating the life and music of Dolly Parton, Andrea will be incorporating her own experiences and music into the show. Andrea’s first album of original songs ‘Stormy’s Daughter’ was recently released and one of the songs will feature in the stage show. Dolly’s influ-
ence on Andrea’s writing and singing is obvious throughout the album, but especially evident on the Bluegrass track ‘Nobody’s Baby’ – a heartfelt recollection of her less than idyllic early life in Sunderland. “The musicians did a great job and the audience didn’t want the show to end. We had three encores before Andrea left to tremendous applause” Dave Walker, Cross Country Magazine “to call this a tribute show would be an injustice, it is much more than that, shut your eyes and it was Dolly!” - Iain Gordon, Glasgow Pavilion Theatre Manager If you’re a fan of Dolly Parton this is a night not to be missed. Tickets are £17 and available from the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444 or online www.alley-theatre.com

A beautiful message... ...write your own story!
Workshops & Seminars
How many of you made New Year resolutions for 2014 and have been able to keep them until now? We are well through the first month of the New Year and at this stage many can feel the pressure of having made such pledges and their resolve is perhaps beginning to weaken somewhat. If this happens remember why you made the decision to make the resolution in the first place. A decision is taking all energies away from the other options and puts you in control. Whatever you decided to be your New Year resolution for 2014 initially is worth continuing as it is good for you. We need to be challenged to make us stronger so in moments of weakness realise that you are worth it, the other options are totally energyless and what you are doing is taking you closer to the person you choose to be. You will feel the better for it. but why is this a forever good-bye?” “I “I wish you enough sun to keep your

Recently, I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport as the daughter’s departure had been announced. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said: “I love you and I wish you enough. “The daughter replied, “Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom.” They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I sat. Standing there, I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, “Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?” “Yes, I have,” I replied. “Forgive me for asking
said. When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, “I wish you enough.” May I ask what that means?” She began to smile. “That’s a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone. “She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more. “When we said ‘I wish you enough’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them”. Then turning toward me, she shared the following, reciting it from memory,
alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye. “She then began to cry and walked away. They say it takes a minute to find a special person. An hour to appreciate them. A day to love them. And an entire life to forget them. Until the next time. Tom Herron

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats The Herald speaks to a son or daughter of Strabane, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond Strabane we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for Strabane and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Paul McAteer. When did you leave Strabane and to where?
