It’s the 11th year of of this unique Panarts programme and Paul is one of four chosen, after organisers listened to hundreds applicants from across the country.
Strabane singer song writer Paul Tully.
Alongside Allie Bradley, Mark Graham and Warren Attwell, Paul will perform in concert at the Holiday Inn Belfast as part of the 11th United Airlines Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival in early March. In mid March, all four artists will travel to the US to take part in four live showcase events and music industry meetings with publishers, managers, venue owners and other industry professionals. “I’m absolutely over the moon about this,” said Paul, speaking to the ‘Herald’ at the weekend. “It’s a great opportunity and one I wasn’t really expecting. I’m really looking forward to it because I’m not too sure what will lie ahead over there but it’s definitely the
place to be for getting your music out there and meeting with the right people. Hopefully something good can come from it. Continued on Page 47

Work to alleviate Carlton Drive path flooding completed - Mc Mahon
DELIVERY & ORDER HOTLINE
Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Mc Mahon has welcomed the completion of work to install a storm drain on a path at the top of Carlton Drive, which runs parallel with the side of St Mary Primary (Junior School), which had continually been experiencing build-up of surface water or more extensive flooding during spells of heavy rain. He said, “On foot of representations from local residents about the problem, which made this busy pedestrian path, running parallel with the side of St Mary Primary (Junior School), impassable whenever there was heavy rain, I brought this problem to the attention of Roads Service and arranged a site meeting at which the official acknowledged the problem needed addressed. “Roads Service has now installed a new storm drain at the low point off the path and local residents are delighted that surface water is now escaping freely and that the water build-up/flooding problem appears to have been resolved. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Roads Service for the good work that was carried out to resolve Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Mc Mahon at the path this long-standing problem. on Carlton Drive where the storm drain has been installed.

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Strabane’s first ever Poetry Slam took place at the start of December in the Big Telly Theatre Company’s Creative Space on the Railway Road. Hosted by local poet and performer, Chris McLaughlin, it proved to be the ideal platform for individuals to read their own original work. The innovative Creative Shop opened in Strabane late last year. It is the latest phase of Big Telly Theatre Company’s work with local authorities across Northern Ireland to re-animate empty retail units into creative spaces to inspire and engage local communities. With thanks to funding from the Esmee Fairburn Foundation, Big Telly plans to open three new ‘creative shops’ per year over the next three years. In 2014 Portstewart, Ballycastle and finally Strabane embraced the ‘Creative Shop’ project. Initially the Strabane phase of the project was conclude on January 17 but will now be extended, much to the delight of the local creative community. More events will be announced via local and social media shortly.

Slimming World’s eating plan gets a New Year makeover! According to NHS Choices around seven million of us will make a New Year’s resolution to improve our health after overindulging at Christmas and losing weight is top of our list, above giving up smoking, getting fit and drinking less alcohol.*
All new members who come along to Slimming World will receive a new New Member Pack to get them started. It includes a comprehensive guide to the science behind Food Optimising and an explanation of the Extra Easy eating plan, a booklet that explains Slimming World’s understanding of the power of group support, a guide to activity and its importance for overall health and wellbeing, and a special new ‘get started’ guide called Everyday Extra Easy that includes recipes and tips for breakfasts, lunches, salads, snacks and delicious dinners so that slimmers will never feel bored, stuck or like they’re missing out. It contains our very best advice, from the latest research as well our 45 years of experience. It combines top tips for a fabulous first week weight loss, simple shopping advice and small swaps that will make a big difference to your waistline and help you to form healthy habits that will last a lifetime.”
New Member Pack.
Luckily for anyone looking to lose weight in 2015, Slimming World has streamlined its Extra Easy plan and local Slimming World Consultants says this means local slimmers will be able to achieve their New Year resolution with ease. Sinead, Kellie and Sharron who run the 3 local Slimming World groups, are excited about the changes. They say: “Like many of our members, our Extra Easy eating plan has had a makeover for 2015 and is looking better than ever. It’s now simpler to follow and members will find it even easier to get off to a great start with their weight loss. There’s also a fab new way to boost your slimming power along your journey if you need it.” For decades Slimming World’s Food Optimising programme has shown members that it’s possible to lose weight without being on a restrictive and faddy diet and to satisfy their appetite with healthy foods without counting, weighing or measuring everything you eat. Instead, slimmers are encouraged fill up on everyday foods – which Slimming World calls ‘Free Foods’ – like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, which are filling yet naturally low in calories. This year Slimming World has used the latest research to identify the foods are the lowest in energy density, so they’ll really help to speed up weight loss – mostly vegetables and fruit – and those which are the most satisfying and filling – mostly protein and fibre-rich foods. By basing meals around these foods members can super-charge their slimming campaign. “Most people who embark on New Year diets start to struggle within days or weeks because they follow plans that are too restrictive and leave them feeling hungry or deprived
so they’re impossible to keep up. At Slimming World we’ve been helping people to lose weight for decades so we’ve learned a thing or two about supporting slimmers to achieve their dreams, including how important it is to their success to have a great first week weight loss as well as be able to enjoy normal, everyday food without feeling hungry or deprived. By following our streamlined Extra Easy plan members are guaranteed to power up their weight loss and see some great results on the scales. And we can promise that if people in Tyrone and Donegal love food, they’ll love the Slimming World approach! “We also know that getting support to overcome those tricky moments when you’re trying to break old habits and stick to new ones is crucial. Many people start off with great intentions in the early weeks of January but quickly lose heart – and focus – without support to help them stay on track. Everyone will be sure of a warm welcome at Slimming World and each week members will pick up new recipes, ideas and get advice to help them make healthy changes and get into a new lifestyle groove.”

‘I took back control of my life’
Editorial
13st 2lb lighter, local Sion Mills man Trevor Wilson, is loving being back in the driving seat. Trevor says since losing weight he’s making up for missing out on life: “Before I lost weight I had to walk with a stick and could only manage 4 or 5 at a time before I got really tired. I had a string of health and breathing problems including sleep apnoea and my whole body ached with constant pain. It was then I decided to join my local Slimming World group on 9th April 2013. I was worried people would judge me or the scales wouldn’t go up to my weight,” says Trevor. “I needn’t have been so nervous though because everyone made me feel so welcome and my Consultant Sinead was really friendly. Now I recommend Slimming World to everyone, the group is such great support if the going ever gets a bit tough and they cheer you on with every pound you lose. I have made some really great friends.” Trevor lost 3st 2lb in his first 12 weeks. Now he’s lost a phenomenal total of 13st 2lbs. His waist measurements have dropped from a 60 inch waist to a very trim and healthy 34 inches. He has transformed his eating habits, swapping one big meal a day for three healthy homemade meals and snacks. “When Sinead first told me about SlimTrevor Wilson from Sion Mills who lost a staggering ming World’s ‘Extra Easy’ eating plan I 13st 2lbs at his local Slimmingworld group. Trevor waited for her to tell me what I couldn’t now has a 34 inch waist it was once 60 inch. have but there wasn’t anything, I can
have everything in moderation. I actually eat more now than I did before but I’ve learned to make good choices. The plan isn’t a diet, we all eat together as a family and we have lots of our old favourite meals, just adjusted so they’re cooked in a healthier way. My Mum and Dad have been such an amazing support at home.” Says Trevor. As his health improved, he is much more active. He walks miles every day – without his stick – and attends the local gym 2 to 3 times every week. Trevor says: “.”Even after a year, life had changed completely for me. I’d lost 10 stones and was voted Man of the Year at group. I can do so much more since losing weight but for me the biggest achievements are the small things, probably things that most people take for granted. I love that I can tie my own shoe laces, put on my own socks, not feeling trapped in my own body – the list is endless.” “I had a lovely Christmas and I had an even bigger surprise when I got on the scales on the first weigh in of 2015. I had lost an incredible 15.5lbs in just 1 week by following Slimming World’s new weight boosting tool Extra Easy SP. It felt amazing getting presented with my 13 Stones Award. I am just 3lbs away from my Target Award and I can’t overemphasise the sense of

achievement it’s given me. I’ve learnt such a lot about healthy eating, fitness and self-belief. My only regret is that I left it so long before tackling my weight. I wasted so much time being hampered by health problems, when all along it would have been possible to change. At my heaviest, I felt I had no control over the direction my life was taking. Regaining responsibility for my food choices has put me firmly back in charge. I now feel happier and healthier than I’ve ever been. I’m determined not to waste a minute.”

The Millennium Forum has announced that the dance sensation, Titanicdance, will return to the North West’s premier venue for a limited run in the New Year. The smash hit show of 2014 will perform again from Thurs 5th – Sat 7th February 2015 in what will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the new Jan-April season of events. This electrifying show received three standing ovations at the world premiere in Belfast’s Odyssey Arena in May before going on to play to a capacity audience in the Millennium Forum. It is expected that its short run in February will quickly sell out due to the phenomenal demand it received earlier this year. David McLaughlin, Chief Executive of the Millennium Forum and Co-Producer of Titanicdance, said: “Titanicdance took audiences in the Millennium Forum by storm during its first performance, selling out our venue in May and leaving many people disappointed when they couldn’t get tickets. The reception it received from local audiences was phenomenal – and rightly so, as it’s an electrifying show featuring hugely talented performers of the highest calibre. Since its debut performance here in May, we have been inundated with requests for its return and I’m delighted to be bringing it back for a longer run next February. We are expecting the demand for tickets to be huge, so I would strongly urge anyone who doesn’t want to miss this show, to book their seats early!” Raymond Sweeney, Principal Dancer and Creative Director, added: “We were overwhelmed with the reception the show received at the World Premiere in Belfast and also in Derry. I am thrilled that the show captured audiences to such an extent and I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to perform it again to what will undoubtedly be another hugely enthusiastic audience.”
The Dance Sensation ‘Titanicdance returns to the Millennium forum for three nights only!
Titanicdance is an Irish Dance sensation that tells the story of the world’s most famous ship from its beginning in the Belfast shipyard to its tragic end in the Atlantic Ocean. It embarked on an emotional journey of hope, aspiration, love, heartbreak and sadness that left audiences wanting more and bringing them to their feet. A cast of 30 world class Irish dancers and musicians set the scene for a breath-taking romantic performance that’s led by and choreographed by Principal Dancer and Creative Director, Raymond Sweeney. Sweeney brings a wealth of experience to Titanicdance, having performed with Michael Flatley’s ground-breaking hit, Lord of the Dance for over fifteen years. Joining him onstage and assisting with choreography is Louise Hayden and James Keegan. The show also stars Nikita Cassidy, who, along with James, has danced principal roles in some of the world’s most famous dance shows and who currently stars in Michael Flatley’s new show, Dangerous Games, in London’s West End. Titanicdance performs at the Millennium Forum from Thurs 5th to Sat 7th February. Tickets are now available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum.co.uk for bookings.

TotalMusic (Some) As it’s the first ‘Total Music’ column of 2015 it makes sense to look at just some of the albums we’ll hopefully be hearing over the next 12 months. This year promises new sounds from a healthy mix of the old and new. One band making a long awaited return will be Faith No More, as they prepare to release their first album since 1997. Fans have been eagerly anticipating new material from the band since they reformed in 2009 to start touring again. It has been speculated that the Faith No More of the 21st century may have a touch of early Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, and Puscifer in their sound. It’ll be great to hear new material from them. Faith No More
Muse have been hard at work for a few months now, recording in Vancouver with legendary AC/DC producer Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange on a ‘heavier’ and ‘rockier’ LP that deals with ‘World War 3 and deep ecology’. They’ve told fans to expect to hear it in summer 2015 - just in time for festival season. If you haven’t caught Muse live yet, you’re missing out. They pack one hell of a sound for a trio. Rectify this unticked box in 2015.
of the Sounds of 2015 After dropping B-sides and rarities album ‘The Third Three Years’, the peoples’ punk poet Frank Turner has told fans to expect a more ‘upbeat’ new album in February 2015 - adding that it will be a message to ‘judgemental c***s’. Can’t wait! While there has been no mention of a time frame for when we can expect the fourth album from Foals, the band have spent much of the past year working on it in Oxford. Come February, it will be two years since ‘Holy Fire’ was released. When asked where the band were planning to take their sound from here, Yannis replied: “We don’t really think about it. I find it’s kind of counterproductive to do that, but I’m pretty sure it will be different in some way. I think that’s sort of the lifeblood of the band - for each track to vary a little and hold its own place on the album, but we’ll see.” Chvrches’ debut album ‘The Bones Of What You Believe’ arrived in September 2013 - and a delightful slice of electro pop it was. New sounds are promised for 2015 and if they can maintain the momentum and brilliant quality of new tracks ‘Get Away’ and ‘Dead Air’, then we will certainly have another gem in our collection from the Scottish trio. Radiohead have been back in the studio since September. What new direction are
Public Service Broadcasting
stage. 2009 was when we last heard anything new from Idlewild. New material will finally see the light of day next month with the release of ‘Everything Ever Written’ on February 9. By all reports it’s a stormer of a return with a huge sound. Chvrches
Radiohead
Giorgio Moroder
Electronic music pioneer Giorgio Moroder came back to the mainstream in recent years after collaborating with Daft Punk on 2013’s ‘Random Access Memories’. It was such a success that he decided to start working on his first solo album in 30 years. Aside from the title track, no songs have been announced for the new album, but numerous guest vocalists will be featured, including Britney Spears, Sia, Kylie Minogue, Charli XCX, and Mikky Ekko. Expect plenty of pulsing beats, throbbing keyboards, and disco guitars. This one could be busting with floorfillers.
Since then, lawsuits and frontman James Keenan’s lack of involvement with the band have held the process back. Now, the latest reports show all the members of the band working together in the studio, which is a huge step forward. Expect new sounds by summer 2015. One of Britain’s most inventive musical outfits
Frightened Rabbit
they veering towards? Who knows! Will we hear the end result in 2015? Who knows! Will they be headlining Glastonbury? Possibly. ‘Pedestrian Verse’ was one of the highlights of 2013 from Scottish alt-folk heroes Frightened Rabbit. In between frontman Scott Hutchison released his blinding solo album as Owl John, while the band have been in the studio working on a new record. Hutchison said: “It’s happening now. Now, we’ve got all of these little nuggets from everyone and to try and combine them is something that’s really exciting.”
Following on from their successful headlining sets at Reading and Leeds this summer, Blink 182 have told fans that they’ve started work on their next LP, the follow-up to 2011’s ‘Neighbourhoods’, and to expect a summer 2015 release. Comebacks tend to be very ill-advised, however that cannot be said about the return of Sleater Kinney. The iconic riot-grrrrl group’s return has been heralded by many over the last month, and the addition of a new single on their career-spanning boxset points towards an album being released in January. The vinyl of the new single was marked 1/20/15. Could Sleator Kinney
SOAK
that be a release date? Let’s hope so. The album we thought we’d never see from Tool draws ever nearer this year. ‘10,000 Days’ was the last offering from the band, and it was released all the way back in 2006.
Muse U2
U2 have told fans to expect the follow-up to ‘Songs Of Innocence’, ‘Songs Of Experience’ this year. Whether they plan to controversially gatecrash iTunes with it remains to be seen but what looks pretty certain is that there will be some Irish dates at the end of the year. A residency at the Dublin’s 3Arena and Belfast’s Odyssey? We can only speculate at this
of recent times, Public Service Broadcasting, will be launching their new album in February 2015. The follow-up to their stunning debut ‘Inform, Educate, Entertain’, titled ‘The Race For Space’, looks set to expand on the duo’s inventive style, which takes in samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material, attempting to ‘teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future’. ‘The Race For Space’ will focus on the story of the American and Soviet space race from 1957 to 1972 via the duo’s eccentric mix of guitar-driven electronica, propulsive drumming and spoken word samples culled from this uniquely rich period of modern history. This has potential to be one of the albums of the year. Closer to home we will see the arrival of the
Tool
debut album from SOAK in 2015. In three years Derry teenager Bridie Monds-Watson has gone from an intriguing 15 year old performing on Electric Mainline on BBC Radio Foyle to Glastonbury and the Radio One playlist. With a style that cannot be taught and never justifiably defined, SOAK has a unique quality that has warranted the hype thanks to the lush existentialism of tracks like ‘Blud’, ‘Sea Creatures’ and ‘B a Nobody’. Her debut album was recorded at Attica Studio in Donegal will be released on the esteemed Rough Trade label. Last but certainly not least, let’s not forget the prolific Strabane acts who will colour 2015 with a vast array of original material. Expect new exciting sounds from Gaze Is Ghost, White Male Actors, Those Ghosts, Zenemy DJz, Gerard i2, Mr Mills and HcBaby. All going well we should also have brand new music from the fantastic Glen Harkin and hopefully a follow-up to the wonderful ‘Lyric For The Lost’ EP from Paul Tully. Have a great year folks. We’ve got it all to look forward to.

Apply for the ‘Boiler Replacement Scheme’ before the deadline Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has urged owner occupiers who meet the eligibility criteria for the Boiler Replacement Scheme to apply as soon as possible as the scheme is due to end on the 31st March 2015. He said, “Replacing old inefficient boilers helps reduce energy costs and maximise energy efficiency in your home. Given the impending closing date for the scheme I would urge all owner occupiers who meet the following eligibility criteria to apply as soon as possible: · Any owner occupiers earning less than £40,000 who have a boiler at least 15 years old can apply to have it replaced. · For those earning less than £20,000 the grant is £700 to replace the boiler but will rise to £1,000 if controls are also being installed (Dual control boilers mean that you can heat your hot water without turning on you central heating) · For those earning over £20,000 but less than £40,000 the grant is £400 for the boiler but will rise to £500 if controls are installed. · There are also a number of grants available including a potential grant of up to £1,000 to have the work done. “These grants are dependent on your total gross income and would be available to assist in replacing an inefficient boiler for a more energy-efficient condensing oil or gas boiler, switching from oil to gas; or switching to a wood pellet boiler “Whilst there will be an inspection fee of £60, which is compulsory, the potential benefits of having a more efficient heating system will demonstrate good value for money. Grimes and McKee latest comedy production ‘ St Mungo’s Luganulk’ has taken the GAA world by storm after its debut in the Bardic Theatre, Donaghmore last October. The Alley Theatre, Strabane is delighted to be welcoming this very funny production on Thursday 5th February. When they’re drawn against their near neighbours and vicious rivals the whole village expects yet another first round exit, and perhaps the end of Luganulk. But the footballing gods intervene and St Mungo’s fluke a one point win, in the ninth minute of injury time. So begins an impossible journey to the All - Ireland Club Final!! Based on a true-ish story. Come and see how the good people of Luganulk learned to love their football team again in this hilarious production which UTV’s Frank Mitchell gave 10 out of 10. UK, ‘Breaking Bad’ is widely regarded as one of the biggest and most influential shows of the last five years. Ireland’s TG4, however, did pick up on the show. Perhaps UK networks should take note, as not for the first time TG4 proved to be ahead of the game. Set in 2002, ‘Better Call Saul’ focuses on the life of small-time lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) six years before his appearance on ‘Breaking Bad’, though events during and after the original series will also be explored. Expectation will be considerable and ‘Breaking Bad’ fans will be hoping for a narrative to match that of the original series. We’ll keep you posted. Letterman will be missed, even more so when watching Corden behind a similar desk. ‘The Great British Bake Off’ will be hoping to maintain the huge audiences it enjoyed during its 2014 series, following a successful move from BBC Two to BBC One. Will we ever get over “Bingate” - involving a sloppy Baked Alaska? It’s amazing the things you find yourself watching and being drawn into. Alan Partridge could have pitched some of these ideas. Anyway, happy New Year from ‘Total Telly’ and may you find no end of entertainment throughout 2015 on the little screens or all shapes and sizes.

Have you ever asked yourself ’where does the time go’? Each year at this time we tend to be full of good intentions around starting something healthy and stopping something unhealthy as it were. This year let it be different. Make 2015 the beginning of you letting yourself “off the hook”. Tom has a strategy to help quit smoking in 2015...read on...
By all means have your new year resolutions and do your best to keep them, however if you find you have slipped up or failed to be as diligent as you might have been, simply forgive yourself and start again. Our lives are full of habits, many useful and others perhaps not so useful. We tend to focus however on those ‘bad’ habits that we seem to have a lot of and forget about all the useful ones. Habits are something we practice regularly, have become automatic behaviours and the more we practice the better we become at them. If we want to really break a habit we must firstly become aware that the habit exists and be committed to doing something about it. In the past when I wanted to quit smoking
for example, knowing all the health risks and related issues was never enough to keep me stopped. When that urge for a smoke came on it was difficult to get it to go away without resorting to lighting up a ‘fag’. I could feel miserable and irritable and was weighing up the pros and cons of quitting and asking my-self was it really worth all the hassle.
Quit Smoking Strategy
ble and 10 was wanting a cigarette very badly indeed. I found that I could put up with the ‘wanting a cigarette’ feeling until it reached about a ‘7’ on my imaginary scale and then it became just too difficult so I had to do something about it. I then took a small breath in through my nose followed by a small breath out through my nose, held my breath after the out breath, held my nose and walked up and down the landing at my home counting the steps until I found it uncomfortable. I then let go of my nose and recovered breathing only in and out through my nose. After fully recovering I repeated the process aiming to add a couple more steps to the previous total. I did this exercise 6 times initially increasing the total amount of steps each time and recovering breathing in and out only through the nose. I then measured on my imaginary scale how much I wanted a cigarette and realised it had gone down to a ‘3’. I was amazed and promptly repeated the whole exercise again. The figure dropped again and repeating this exercise when I found a great urge for a cigarette proved such a relief for me. I now knew I could get rid of the notion of smoking without smoking by simply pacing up and down holding my breath and holding my nose until I needed to breathe and repeating the process until the urge subsided. Initially I had to practice this lots of times as the urges to smoke were coming hard and fast, however after some days these became less and less and I have never smoked since. Sometimes it is amazing what works.
I then realised that I need a different strategy or approach to quitting. I wanted to retain the feeling of satisfaction that I believed smoking gave me without actually smoking. Now how Wishing you all a very prosperous, was I going to do that? I started to measure peaceful and smoke-free 2015. my feeling of needing a cigarette on a scale from 0 – 10 where 0 was perfectly comforta- Tom Herron

Christmas Mix up at the Alley Theatre!
Local music fans spoilt for choice as Tokyo Empire, White Male Actors, Aodhan Doherty and Gaze Is Ghost entertained the crowd
Where’s My Hoverboard? Those of us of an age to remember when ‘Back To The Future: Part Two’ was released can recall watching in awe as we were given an insight into what life would be like almost thirty years the filmmakers imagined it. We saw food later.
franchise and it was indeed a ‘floating turd’. Marty’s hometown was screening ‘Jaws 19’ in 2015, so I guess Spielberg has a busy year ahead! Speaking of rubbish, in ‘Back To The Future’ 2015 we had Mr Fusion – a home energy reactor, which was essentially a power source fuelled by everyday garbage, turning your leftovers into 1.21 jigawatts of hydrators, which could turn a small sau- energy! It could see an end to the black cer-sized pizza into a full-sized cheese- wheelie bin! feast within seconds. I don’t know about you but I’m still waiting a good 15 minutes for my pizza. Also, as of yet, there are no automatic dog walkers. We still have to do it and, yes, we’re still picking up the poop ourselves. I have to admit I was full of hope for that one! After falling into the pond while being chased by Biff and his hapless gang, Marty’s jacket went through a process of self-drying. Such an invention gave all in wet and windy Ireland a reason to look to “Where we’re going we don’t need the future with a sense of hope. But alas, roads,” said the ‘Doc’, just as he and we’re still soaked to the skin and throw- Marty set off from 1985 to 2015. He ing the jackets on the radiators when we clearly did not foresee the A5 controversy! In 1989, 2015 is a world of flying get home. cars. Yes, some Avicci loving drivers are close, but in the 2015 that we live in, the nearest cars get to taking flight is when bouncing over the potholes.
Such a stretch in time made everything that we saw completely plausible in 1989, when the film was released. Somehow, and I’m sure I’m not alone in wondering where those years have gone, we’ve now made it to 2015, the year depicted in the second part of Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster trilogy of films. So how accurate were the filmmakers in their late-eighties vision of 2015? Firstly, let’s bring the uninitiated and the hazy in mind up to speed. Having gone back in time to 1955 in the first ‘Back To The Future’ movie, which is set in 1985, also the year of its release, Marty McFly and his eccentric old sidekick ‘Doc’ Brown secured the union of Marty’s parents at the school prom and in doing so secured Marty’s very existence. Having returned via their DeLorean time machine to 1985, the second ‘Back To The Future’ film begins with Marty once again picked up by the ‘Doc’ and sent through time to the future; thirty years into the future as it happens. Marty’s job in 2015 is to pose as his own son to prevent him from being thrown in prison. The most recent ‘Jaws’ sequel was Naturally, chaos ensues. released in 1987. ‘Jaws: The Revenge’ Amid the chaos, we saw life in 2015, as was the fourth instalment of the shark
It’s wasn’t all a complete misfire though. Sportswear brand Nike is hoping to release real versions of Marty McFly’s self-lacing shoes by the end of this year. Nike filed a US Patent for self-lacing shoes in July 2014, featuring motorised rollers embedded in the soles. These would be activated by a control system
The clock in Marty and the Doc’s DeLorean was set to 21st October this year back in 1985!
that could either be operated using a button on the side or respond to changes in weight, wrapping the ends of the laces around themselves and
creating a tightening effect. Finally, we get to the one we’ve been waiting all these years for – the hoverboard! Believe it or not, the chance to skate literally on air may be a reality before the year is out. Past attempts to create a board always wiped out under the shaky ground of two magnets, which made controllable levitation a near impossibility. However, ‘The Hendo hoverboard’ design has got around this problem by
using four disc-shaped engines instead of two. The engines generate a special magnetic field which “literally pushes against itself,” producing the lift which takes the board off the ground. Unfortunately, in its current incarnation, the hoverboard levitates just one inch off the ground. While Marty McFly was able to jet over most everything but water, ‘The Hendo Hoverboard’ only operates on non-ferromagnetic surfaces – those which are not attracted to magnets, so it would be of no great use in a chase! However, if they reach their target in time, 10 beta versions of the boards will be up for grabs, though they will sell for a weighty $10,000 a pop. And keeping in the spirit of the film, you’ll have to wait until October 21, 2015 – the same date on which Marty and ‘Doc’ Brown arrived in their DeLorean time machine to set the future straight – before you can pick up the board. You’ve waited decades. What’s ten months?

Strabane Sigersons’ Inaugural 5k Walk/Run a Massive Success A great day out was had by all at Strabane Sigersons’ first 5k Walk/Run at the beginning of the month. Approximately 200 runners and walkers took part with a great finish between Christopher Leitch and Mark McBrearty. Both runners were side by side as they approached the finish but Christopher just got his nose in front at the line. Claire McGuigan had a great run to emerge victorious in the women’s race. Shea Carlin and Laura Coyle were first man/woman home from Sigersons. On the Club’s Facebook page a spokesperson said, “This morning had a great feel of GAA community spirit. The club was represented by great numbers. Visitors, many to the club for the first time, were impressed with the organisation and facilities at our club. The local community makes a club what it is so we are indebted to everyone that
took part/lent a hand today. Thank You. “Thanks to Ivan Barr and Strabane Community Rescue Service/Strabane SAFE for a very professional job at stewarding, Brendan/Micheal from Lifford AC for time keeping, to everyone at Sigersons who marshalled, made refreshments, registered etc. Also thanks to those who sponsored our prizes, Murphys on the Green, Smugglers and Sion Stables. Thanks. A donation will be made to Foyle Hospice whom we ran the race in conjunction with. Well done to EVERYONE who took part today, you should all be proud of yourselves!”
The winners of the Strabane Siggersons’Inaugural 5k Run/Walk was Christopher Leitch and the first lady home was Claire McGuigan.

The four of us will go over there, do our gigs and enjoy the experience. It’ll be great to play in places like the Bluebird Cafe, which is a very well renowned venue.” Meanwhile, Paul is currently working on a new EP of original material. His debut EP, ‘Lyric For The Lost’, garnered wide acclaim when it was released in 2013. “I’m recording at Neon Noise with Pete Doherty at the desk. I’ve got loads of material so I’m looking forward to getting those tracks down and then picking what will make the EP.
It should be finished and ready for release in a couple of months,” he stated. Between Nashville and a new EP, 2015 is already going in the right direction for Paul Tully. For updates on Paul Tully, check his Facebook music page: www.facebook.com/paultullymusic
