Arranmore Island, the setting for the Swell Festival.

Local music fans may be feeling at a loss this summer after the Glasgowbury festival waved goodbye last July on a beautifully sun-kissed Eagles Rock Valley in Draperstown. However, much was learned up on that mountain down through the years and home-grown original music will certainly not be going quietly back to its corner of the beer-garden in the future. Many will go forth and set up festivals of their own. One such festival coming up in July will be the Swell Festival. Swell Festival is a music and arts festival taking place on Arranmore Island off the coast of Donegal this weekend, July 11-13. The festival is located at the Arranmore Holiday Village about 1km from the ferry port. Duke Special, The Emerald Armada, Farriers, In Their Thousands, The Wood Burning Savages, A Northern Light and Gaze Is Ghost are just a handful of the acts set to make their bow on the island. So far the full line up, which is not short of great Strabane, Derry and Donegal artists, is: Duke Special, Heads of State, In Their Thousands, Rosie Carney, A Northern Light, Mark Black and the Trips, Colour//Sound, The Apaches, The Poxmen, Gerardi2, Eve Murtagh, The Capitol, Inishowen

Gospel Choir, Simon McCafferty, Wood Burning Savages, Farriers, Gentry Morris, Kate O Callaghan, The Yips, Juhn Echo, Myth, Blades Club, Comrade Hat, Gaze is Ghost, Sive, Sugar Cane Flame, Freaks, Captain A and the Commercial Monsters, Gabriel Paschal Blake, Dramatic Tiger Club, Carrie Haskins, Jet Set Radio, Nyt Bloomer, Mugsy the Juck. One of the festival organisers, John Muldowney gave us an insight into what else there is to look forward to aside from the great music. “The Speakeasy will be at the Swell and Cabaret is only the half of it! The Preacher’s Pulpit will be there if you something to say about the world we live in. Well, here’s your chance to convert the masses! There will also be some old fashioned games – horseshoe throwing, hoopla and more. There will also be a Grassroutes electric bike hire, so you can tour the island at your own pace. Add Art installations and a spoken word and performance stage to all of this and you have a weekend that we hope will become a permanent fixture every summer!” Camping is available onsite and will open on Friday 11th July and close on Monday 14th July. Holy Cross College Strabane receive their Health Action Award. Pictured are teacher Eilis Carlin, Jennifer Morton from sponsor Centra, pupil Saoirse Monaghan, Claire McCollum who presented the prizes, pupil Paul Boggs, and teacher Siobhan Quinn.

Holy Cross College, Strabane is one of Northern Ireland’s healthiest, having recently been recognised at the Health Action Awards, run by Action Cancer and independent retail group Centra. The school received a Gold award in the Western Education and Library Board region for their outstanding health promotion activities for pupils. For eleven years the Health Action awards have acknowledged the best health promotion projects in nurseries, schools and colleges across Northern Ireland, and the winners include those with healthy meals, safe sun initiatives and extra-curricular exercise programmes that help combat obesity. Almost 40 schools picked up accolades for their innovative approach to health education for pupils this year, with the highest scoring schools in each Education and Library Board region receiving cash prizes of £200. The healthy school awards are part of Action Cancer’s Health Action initiative, which provides a range of health promotion sessions for schools and colleges, and is sponsored by Centra. Almost 500,000 young people have taken part in the programme since 2003. Action Cancer Health Promotion Manager Frances Dowds said; “The Health Action awards are unique in Northern Ireland; encouraging local schools that provide first class health education to children and motivating others to do the same. The award entries highlight some fantastic examples of health

promotion projects in schools and colleges each year, and generally we have noticed an improvement in the quality of the projects year on year.” She added; “With Centra’s support Action Cancer delivers healthy lifestyle sessions to tens of thousands of young people every year, with the aim of creating new, healthy behaviours, which will reduce their risk of getting cancer. Our hope is that the Health Action programme, working alongside in-school projects, will ultimately save lives.” Health Action aims to educate young people on the importance of a healthy diet, care in the sun and the need to take exercise to help reduce future incidences of cancer. The award-winning programme is supported by Centra retailers across Northern Ireland, who have raised over £900,000 to fund it since the partnership started. Nikki McDowell from Centra commented; “Centra retailers in Northern Ireland committed their longterm support to Action Cancer’s life-saving work in schools, and they are proud to continue providing funding and promotional support to the programme as a way of giving something back to the community.” A full list of 2014 award winners is available at www.actioncancer.org

Avoid high mobile phone charges this summer! West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has encouraged mobile phone users to take action this summer to avoid a high mobile phone bill caused by roaming charges. Ms Boyle said, “With mobile internet access and Wi-Fi it’s never been easier to stay in touch with what’s going on at home and upload photos to share with friends while on holidays. However, coming back to a huge mobile phone bill can be a nasty surprise for many. Using your phone overseas can cost considerably more than it does at home, particularly if you want to surf the web or check or send a number of emails. Strabane to host Professional Kickboxing title Extravaganza for the town too as it’ll put Strabane on the map.” While Ciaran plans to stay in the ring for another while, his brother Ronan will bow out after his fight on the night against English Kickboxing champion Corey Fox for the British Heavyweight title. “I won the Northern Ireland title two months ago, so now I have the opportunity to go for the British title. I’m going to put this down as definitely my last fight as I’ll be 38 in February, so it’s the last hurrah for me you could say. Win, lose or draw there’s no better way to bow out than in front of a packed home crowd. It’s certainly the biggest fight that I’ve been involved in,” says Ronan.

Strabane is getting ready for its biggest ever WKU (World Kickboxing and Karate Union) Kickboxing extravaganza on September 13 at St Pat’s Hall. Topping the bill on the night will be the hotly anticipated rematch between Strabane Kickboxer Ciaran Boyle and current double World champion, five time European champion and current Commonwealth champion Scott ‘Fat Boy’ Taylor. Boyle and Taylor first fought in Birmingham in March. After winning on a tight points decision Taylor was in no doubt that he fought a warrior, deeming the fight as the toughest of his distinguished career. A packed undercard of bouts is promised on the night, including Ciaran’s brother Ronan, who will be fighting English Kickboxing champion Corey Fox for the British Heavyweight title. Michael McCrossan will fight for the Northern Ireland title and other fighters within the local CB Martial Arts club will represent the club on the night. While the serious training is well under way, the ‘Herald’ managed to speak to both Boyle brothers during one of their few time-outs between now and fight night. As Ciaran explained to us, he only had five weeks to train for the March fight with Taylor. However, this time around he will be perfectly prepared. “I only had six weeks’ notice for the fight in March,” he tells us. “That means training for five and then a week to rest up. In those five weeks I got reasonably fit but not as fit as I can be. Still, I went over to Birmingham and did 12 rounds with him. Up to round eight I thought it was neck and neck. The fitness levels started to kick in after that. I know now what I did wrong and all it takes is a bit more fitness to beat him. Now I have the chance to get myself prepared properly with 10 weeks

World Title Fight in Birmingham, March 2014: Scott Taylor with the Champions belt with Ciaran Boyle who he narrowly beat that night after 12 rounds. On the left is Ciaran’s brother Ronan. The rematch is in St Pat’s Hall, Strabane on September 13.

training and I’ll be ready for him.” Strabane has never been the venue for a professional world title kick boxing bout before, so Ciaran believes that September 13 can be a night when history can be made more than once. “We could’ve opted for another venue outside of Strabane because of the cost of the event, which goes into the thousands. There will be four title fights on the night so it’s just the biggest thing to have happened in Strabane as regards full contact fighting. We’re currently looking for local businesses to help sponsor the event because for Strabane to host this historic night means there will be costs. We’re

just trying to cover the costs for the flights and accommodation for all the English coming over and general overheads for the running of the night. If we get that covered we’ll be happy. I don’t care if I don’t make penny. I just want to fight and win the title and from then on it’s up to me what I get paid as I can negotiate for future bouts as champion,” Ciaran explains. So, is the 35 year old Strabane man confident? “I’m 100 percent confident,” he replies instantly. “If he shows up without any injury excuses he’ll be beaten. I plan to retire in the next year or two so I really want to win this title before I do. It’s good

He continues, “We’re both going to give it our best and the ten weeks of intense training is now under way. We’ve been getting a lot of local support and the sponsors have been fantastic. Strabane Training Services have given us a space to train in and have helped us with the funding, as have many others locally and it is greatly appreciated. It’s a great opportunity for local businesses because we’re representing the town and Ireland and it’s an event that will gain coverage across Europe because the WKU is well established. If Ciaran wins the world title people will want to watch it and local businesses can benefit greatly from having their names up in lights. Ultimately, we want to do the town proud so hopefully the two Boyle brothers can win World and European titles right here in our hometown,” says Ronan. If there are any businesses out there that would like to help via sponsorship it would be greatly appreciated by all involved in the organising of the event. A committee is now set up focusing on funding and sponsorship, headed by Terry Boyle, father of Ciaran and Ronan. With such a high profile event it is certainly the perfect opportunity to promote your business and support the biggest fighting event ever in Strabane.

The support and congratulations from customers have made the award even more special and I am very grateful to IPN and all involved in the Process . Liam Ó Maonlaí

– the best has yet to come Liam Ó Maonlaí is no stranger to Strabane. With his band Hothouse Flowers he has already performed in the Alley Theatre a number of times and he returned for a special solo performance at the same venue back in May. The ‘Herald’ caught up with Liam the day after his solo performance in Monroes, Galway and soon discovered that his memories of Strabane go beyond taking to the stage of the Alley Theatre. “My father loved Strabane,” he states. “He had good friends there. I might try and pick up on that, in fact. He was an engineer and we would travel to Donegal a lot with him. I actually remember stopping in Strabane a couple of times with him. I was very young but always remember liking the feel of the place.” It doesn’t stop there. In the late eighties, while touring with Hothouse Flowers, Liam and the band stopped off for a drink in Bridge Street; an evening Liam recalls because his hand was broken at the time and a local lady recommended a faith healer for him. “Two doctors, one in Belfast and one in Derry, said it wasn’t broken. By the end of a gig in Derry I simply couldn’t do any more with it. We were booked to play Omagh and it was a gig we wanted to do because a friend of the band really wanted us to play there. We actually spent the night in Strabane and I recall having a great night of chat with a lady and her son. They told me

Liam Ó Maonlaí spoke to the Herald recently when he was playing at the Alley Theatre.

about a faith healer that I should go and see. The lady actually said a few prayers over my hand. It was a great night and there may have been a drink or two had,” he laughs. While Liam is currently doing solo dates, Hothouse Flowers are still very much an active force, with a sprinkling of band dates mixing in with his solo tour. We wondered if Liam approaches a solo performance differently. “There’s a different approach to every show, whether it’s solo or not. I don’t write a setlist. I like to go into a room and have that opportunity of anything being possible. I like the idea of being able to go on a journey and take whoever is in the room with me. To a certain degree that happens with the Flowers as well because we’ve been at it for nearly 30 years and we can read each other well enough. The difference between the Flowers and me is literally that I’m on my own at one gig and with a band at another with a few other people steering the boat along with me,” he explains. It seems in many ways that no two Hothouse Flowers or Liam Ó Maonlaí solo gigs are ever the same. “Exactly,” replies Liam. “I

used to think, how can you decide in advance what’s going to be the right thing for that moment? Now that I’m older I can see the point of a show and a plan but I still think with rock ‘n’ roll particularly that an edge is a great thing to have. It allows for those diamond moments that no amount of preparation can give you.”

as they were being recorded. “When I sat down at the piano I didn’t know what was going to come out. Those songs were just born as you hear them. I really wanted that to be on the record. It’s not perfect but I think it’s worth hearing. It’s a very piano driven record,” he explains.

The conversation turned to a similar album recorded recently by Paul Buchanan from the Blue Nile, ‘Mid Air’ from 2012. “The Blue Nile really had a style and a tone and it doesn’t surprise me that Paul Buchanan would go in that direction. Space was always a big part of their music and mine too. There’s no limit to space and when you make music that brings the listener into an awareness of space It’s an ambitious album that has five and silence there are no limits to the tracks that were written on the spot experience and that’s a really exciting In 2005, Liam released his first solo album, entitled ‘Rian’, which is a collection of tunes and songs in Irish and it has just been re-released. His second solo album, ‘To Be Touched’, was recorded in the Czech Republic in a series of recording sessions organised by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová.

thing,” Liam enthuses. So what does the future hold for Liam? More solo work or a new Hothouse Flowers record? “There are a number of records I see on the horizon. The Flowers are ready to do something. We know everyone who is involved in our music now. When we were in the spotlight there were a lot of people making decisions about our lives that we didn’t even know or see. I couldn’t live with that so we took time off and we fixed it. It’s been a few years since we last made a record so now it’s time. There’s an energy and a lust after something that has to be fulfilled. I feel it’s very important that we’re all on the right wavelength to bring it home because I still think we have our best work to do and I’m happy to say that,” he concludes.

‘My diabetes symptoms have disappeared’ Tracy Denning has lost 6st 9½lbs and waved goodbye to her diabetes symptoms. “Although I’d never been slim, my weight didn’t bother me too much until I was expecting my second child Lucy. My husband, Ian and I had been trying for a baby for some time and my GP had insisted there was nothing seriously wrong, I just needed to lose weight. Every month I’d be disappointed and seek refuge in my favourite thing – food. As a result, by the time I did eventually fall pregnant, I must have weighed well over 16st and soon developed gestational diabetes. “I’d fantasised that once Lucy was born, the diabetes would disappear and I’d lose weight quickly, but the opposite was true. I still had my symptoms (thirst, needing the loo, exhaustion and nausea) plus horrible heartburn. Luckily, my sister Amanda did two very influential things – she joined Slimming World and started losing weight for her wedding, then invited me to be a bridesmaid. “The humiliation I felt in the bridal boutique as the sales assistant tried to fit me into a teeny dress finally pushed me into attending my first Slimming World group in May 2012. I could immediately see the benefit of their support

and even I had to admit, it looked like it might work. “I’d been at Slimming World for less than three months when I started to see and feel a real difference in myself – I’d already lost more than 2st and suddenly had loads of energy. Interestingly, the heartburn had cleared up almost immediately, as soon as I’d stopped eating so much fat. By November, I had lost nearly 4st and my diabetes symptoms were fast disappearing, too. The following March I was following my beautiful sister down the aisle in a size-12 bridesmaid’s dress. “Now I’ve lost more than 6½st and am completely symptom free. Lifestyle-related diabetes is increasingly common, but eat healthily and lose weight and you really can manage it without medication – I’m living proof!” For everything you need to know about diabetes, visit www.diabetes.org.uk Sinead Twells,Slimming World Consultant in the local SionMills group, says, ‘Tracy has done really well. She has really inspired lots of members with her amazing story, her health benefits have been life-changing. Loads of people excercise and then go to the supermarket and buy poor quality food because the healthy food is unfortunately very expensive. There is a convenience in frozen food and takeaway food. It’s cheap and less time consuming as you don’t have to cook, so it suits those with a busy lifestyle, but it’s not healthy. It’s important to remember that you can excercise all you want but you’ll not see any visual benefits if your diet is poor. For success in that respect, excercise is 30% and diet is 70%. You can keep youself fit and healthy here at Fit Fast Gym. We can give advice or offer personal training to help you achieve your goals, be it wight loss, toning, building up, getting ripped, increase fitness or just tomaintain fitness

Eight Week Operation Transformation Proves To Be a Massive Success Operating next door to Fit Fast Gym is D&G Group Training, which is a joint venture run by Leonna Goudie and Hayley Doherty. It is a group fitness centre and runs group training, fitness classes and one to one personal training. Classes run from Monday to Saturday. Four early morning classes take place from 6.30am on Tuesday to Friday. Evening classes and Saturday morning classes also take place. It costs €5 or £4 a class. However, the most popular activity going on at present is the Eight Weeks Operations Transformation. Hayley said, “Every eight weeks we run the ‘Eight Weeks Operation Transformation. The next one is set to start on the second week of August, basically what happens is, you choose any of the four classes a week to attend, you get a new eating plan and you get weighed and measured each week. We are currently in the middle of our second run and the numbers have doubled since the first run after all the ‘before and after’ pictures went out online. The results have just been amazing and the numbers are continually rising, which is why we’ve had to move into a bigger space next door to Fit Fast Gym. So now is the time to book if you want to be part of the next Eight Week campaign in August.”

Manor COUNTRY

I

House HOTEL

Discover Fermanagh’s hidden gem!

got to experience Manor House Country Hotel first hand during a recent stay and from beginning to end it was the perfect experience. Located in the heart of the Fermanagh Lakelands, near Enniskillen overlooking Lough Erne, it is the ideal country retreat combining old world charm with modern hotel luxury.

A true sense of tranquility completely befitting of the scenic location is there to be experienced from arrival. I found limitless relaxation in availing of the full leisure facilities, which includes a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, gym and outdoor hut tub.

A variety of Bars and Dining options are available including The AA Rosette Belleek Restaurant, Cellar Door and Bistro and the Watergate Bar- all serving locally sourced sumptuous cuisine that will satisfy, delight and indeed broaden your food palate.

Such quality endeavours into leisure can certainly help build up an appetite and Manor House Country Hotel could certainly accommodate me in that department as well.

As a golfing enthusiast I was keen to check out the 9 Hole Golf Course and was mightily impressed, enjoying a fine game complimented by beautiful surroundings.

Other onsite facilities include a unique Beauty Salon, top quality Tennis Courts and an impressive and versatile Conference and Event Centre.

During my stay I felt like I really got to experience the true beauty of the Fermanagh Lakelands as I even took a lovely trip on-board the hotel’s Lady of the Lake Cruiser, where I felt even closer to the scenic beauty that surrounds. Onboard I enjoyed a Luxury Dinner Cruise and stay with a delicious four course meal, glass of wine and live music as we sailed along Lough Erne. It was perfection! Later, I retreated to the hotel for an overstay in a room as luxurious and as comfortable as everything that preceded it that day for only £65.00per

person sharing with a delicious breakfast. Manor House Country Hotel has everything you could ask for in terms of scenery, comfort, leisure facilities, activities, cuisine, entertainment and, of course, a wonderful, friendly and helpful staff, including Leona in Cellar Door Bar and Bistro, David in the Watergate Bar, General Manager Brendan McCann, Pat the Porter and Angela, the Restaurant Manager in Belleek. They, along with the rest of the staff, made my stay a most memorable one. Experience it for yourself. You’ll be back again. IET® & ANGEL THERAPY HELPS WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Usui Reiki Master/Teacher blockage/suppressed emotion.

Because weight gain can be an emotional and psychological issue we can also use weight as a protective barrier against our own feelings such as anger and un-forgiveness. When we don’t know how to handle intense emotions or if they get too painful for us to look at, we ‘sweep them under the carpet’. It’s at this stage that the body stores these emotions at a cellular level in the organs.. Organs such as the heart, Gall Bladder, Spleen, Adrenals and Kidneys etc. IET® (Healing With Angels) is Integrated Energy Therapy and is one of the next generation hands on power energy therapy systems that gets the “issues out of your tissues”. The technique was developed by Stevan Thayer, Author, Speaker, Reiki Master and Interfaith Minister. Stevan is also the founder of The Center of Being in Woodstock, NY. IET® works with the energy layers of the client at a celular level including the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual layers. These layers which make up our energy field can become blocked and cause dramatic disturbances in our lives leading to physical systems ranging from mild to serious. IET® is an energy release technique which works to clear the blockages from the client’s energy fields to allow for the natural flow of energy through each layer of the energy field. By releasing these blocks, the client begins to feel lighter, self-empowered and more connected spiritually. Our life experiences create emotions, some of which are undesirable. Negative emotions, once anchored into the body, become stagnated energy in our energy field. Over time, as we experience additional negative emotions that resonate with the emotion already blocked in our energy system, that blockage expands and gains strength and eventually calls out for help by exhibiting physical symptoms such as excessive weight gain and ill health. During an IET® session, the suppressed emotions are released through very gentle, acupressure like points. This happens very naturally and easily without the person having any need to remember the stressful events that caused the-

feeling such as anger, fear, sadness, guilt etc within themselves, how they affect other people and how to safely release them in a fun and loving way. Three short hours could be a valuable gift to a child in taking him/ her through life. In the class your child will learn to “heart link” to the Angels and

Most people experience a deep sense of relaxation during their sessions. Some see colours or visions. There may be sensations of heaviness or lightness. Some people may feel cold as the energy is releasing from the energy layers. IET® works through the use of gentle, hands-on touch directed to specific areas of the body where we hold emotions. During the sessions, the emotions are released and cleared and the client will begin to experience a greater sense of balance and clarity.

Weight gain and excessive weight loss can be a manifestation of stress and unexpressed feelings and emotions that Whether it’s through, IET® treatments or an Angel Card are unhealthy for us. Reading or your own inner guidance, Angels will certainly The majority of times it’s a case of comfort eating to mask past emotional pain or to mask emotional pain and trauma that’s currently residing in our lives now. These emotional issues can include lack of self love (self loathing), anger, fear, resentment, guilt etc. When these issues present themselves to us, and that maybe frequently if not addressed and healed at the root, they stimulate us to reach for the nearest chocolate bar, cigarette, fizzy drink or the nearest sugar fix to numb the pain and the cycle continues. So in the end, the body simply converts these un-dealt with feelings and emotions into fat. Indeed studies have shown that people prone to emotional eating in response to lack of self love, depression, anxiety or any other emotional pain symptoms are more likely to regain weight unless the underlying issue is addressed. In simpler cases weight management is a matter of increased exercise and a change in food habits.

Certified Angel Card Reader, Integrated Energy Therapy Practioner

help you with help you with excessive weight gain or excessive weight loss issues because that will help to bring you peace as well as a healthier mind and body. Angels are here to make life as peaceful as they possibly can for you if you let them. Angels will help you get to the root cause of your weight gain or any other health issue. Whatever it is, your Angels will help you. Step by step they will guide you once you ask them and reach out for help. They will send you messages through different media until you take the appropriate action. The Angels of IET®, like all the 100,000 Angels and more are messengers of God. They are pure beings of light and love, they have no ego so they love each of us unconditionally. The Angels have solutions and guidance for us but we can access their wisdom only by asking for their help. Talk to your Angels like you would talk to your best friend and they will make their signs and answers known to you repeatedly through voices, songs messages, thoughts, ideas, knowingness, intuition, visuals, visions or you may be guided to book an Angel Card Reading where the reader will interpret Angel messages for you encouraging you on your next step or course of action. Or to book an IET® treatment where the practioner will help you ‘get issues out of your tissues for good’ And maybe reading this article today is a sign from your Angels. TRUST THIS! Here are some ways in which you can connect with your Angels and ask for help. Do not tell them how to solve your weight issues as the Angels always know best.

- Send heart links to their family and friends - Build and use a pendulum to measure energy and conscious of your lifestyle and the changes needed in order to live a healthy and fulfilling life. Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats Every month, the Herald speaks to a local son or daughter, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond where they grew up we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for home and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Mick Mahon. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I left Strabane at 17 and worked in Scotland and the UK before moving to Spain a few years ago. What’s it like for a Strabane woman where you are now? Very different as I am now adapting to the Spanish way of life. Great culture!

What do you work at where you are now and how do you find it? I am a tattoo artist with my own shop here in Spain... and I love it! Some stand-out memories so far in your work as a tattoo artist. Well I have tattooed a few very famous faces but I may have to kill you if I told you! Aside from that, making people happy on a daily basis.

Something you’d like to see happen in Strabane in the future? For Strabane to be promoted more as a major tourist destination because of its location, fishing, golfing, history, nature, bars and craic in abundance. Who wouldn’t want to visit?! Also, Strabane has the best LIVE MUSIC in the world!

Guinness or Sangria? GUINNESS!!

Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane?

I grew up in Dock Street and the Derry Road.

What important factors do you think anyone planning to move abroad should consider?

Seeing my best friend Rachael Given and having a nice cold pint among friends in Diceys!

A great memory of Strabane?

NO.1- Can they support themselves?

Where in Strabane did you grow up?

Going up the Glen on a Sunday morning with Bono, my golden Retriever

During a heat wave, some in Strabane are known to sigh, “Ah that’s too warm for me!” Is there any such thing?

NO.2- Can they handle the climate? NO.3- Can you adapt and appreciate other cultures? Ha-ha! NOT WHERE I AM!

Rockin’ by the River celebrates 10 Years! 2014 marks ten years since Rockin’ by the River was revived, and it’s also 20 years since the original festival back in 1994. Let’s take a peek back at the journey over the past two decades... “What, a festival here? In Plumbridge?” You can imagine the idea must have sounded a fairly outlandish one when it was first announced, but 20 years later we are reaping the benefits of that bold decision by the Glenelly committee. After all, it was not the done thing. Ticket draws and A Night at the Races were the industry standards in those days - festivals were for Slane and Glastonbury. But those early endeavours in 1994 and 1995 paved the way for the current run of festivals, which was resurrected in 2004 and celebrates a 10th consecutive year this summer. If the GAA and its clubs are about identity and local pride, the Rockin’ by the River festival is a key part of the character of Glenelly GFC and this community. Although organised primarily to raise funds for the annual upkeep of the club, it is valid to say the festival has exceeded that brief. Current club Chairman Declan McCullagh was there at its genesis in 1993, and along with Sean McConnell he coined the phrase Rockin’ by the River - he recalled: “Gerard McAnena one night mentioned at a meeting ‘What do you think about running a festival?’. I think the feeling around the room was that there was absolutely no chance of this happening. But actually Park was running something at that time, so Gerard, myself and Sean McConnell went down to see how theirs was going, and it grew from there. It was breaking new ground, that’s for sure. Initially people said this will never work. We thought it was a half crazy idea, but we threw ourselves into it. There was a nervousness about it, but there was a big push from Gerard who said ‘this is a novelty, this is the way to do it’, and right he was.

Well done lads!

“That first effort in 1994 had the Dublin City Ramblers booked to headline festivities but they cancelled at short notice leaving Susan McCann to step in and save the day. Sinead O’Hagan had the honour of being crowned the first Glenelly Rose that weekend, while the sheep show was another highlight. The success of that maiden effort saw an extra day added to the follow up in 1995, which lasted from Thursday-Sunday, and featured The Chevy’s and More Power To Your Elbow. After taking a hiatus in 1996, Kieran McCullagh mooted the idea of reviving Rockin’ by the River for the summer of 2004, and so began the current run. That effort 10 years ago saw the beginning of combined fundraising for the men’s and women’s teams within the club. The popularity grew to the extent that it was extended to two weekends, and saw a number of similar festivals sprout up around the county. In the last decade we’ve had international acts such as Sharon Shannon, Francis Black, The High Kings, Bagatelle and Nathan Carter come to Plumbridge, Paddy McCrossan, Rory Doherty, Conor Sharkey and Marc Brolly approach the final hole in their 72 hole golf challenge while other features such as the Vintage Rally, for Macmillan Cancer support to a great reception from club members. The lads have raised well in excess of £2000 so far! Fashion Shows, Strictly Come Dancing and various Well Done, and a big big thank you! workshops have given the festival added dimensions. Preparations start each year following the successful running, close and review of each festival ensuring some acts are booked at least a year in advance, and the foresight of the festival committee has been impressive in following trends and shifts in changing times both economically and socially. The changes since those early days have impressed the current Chair, “It’s definitely got a lot bigger and a lot slicker,” said Declan. “People in positions now know exactly what they’re at. It’s very impressive. Even from last year to see the BBC here, and to see the distances that people travel to come to it. Some emigrants have timed their holiday’s home to be here for it.” Twenty years on, Rockin’ by the River, has become a central part of the narrative of this community. Marc Brolly finishes out on the 72nd Hole. Let’s hope we’re still rockin’ in another 20!

Created by Mike Judge, best known as the creator and star of the animated television series Beavis and Butt-head, King of the Hill, and The Goode Family, the series premiered in April on HBO. The first season will consist of eight episodes and it has already been renewed for a second season. The show centres on Richard Hendriks (Thomas Middleditch), a shy, reclusive programmer for Hooli (a large corporation) living in a house in Palo Alto. He lives there under an “incubation” program run by Erlich Bachman (TJ Miller). Bachman, who despite the sale of his prior app Aviato, seeks parties and drug use rather than offering sound advice and guidance for his start-ups like most incubators actually do. He resides along with other co-habitants including Nelson “Big Head” Bighetti (Josh Brener), Bertram Gilfoyle (Martin Starr), and Dinesh Chugtai (Kumail Nanjiani).

The hit US show stars Golden Globe nominee Liev Schreiber as LA’s best professional fixer, the man called in to make the city’s celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls’ most complicated and combustible situations go away. Season two will pick up just where we left off and will centre on the fallout of the bloodshed of the final episode, particularly for Ray and his dad Mickey (played brilliantly by Jon Voight). Of course the FBI will also be heavily involved, particularly LA Bureau Chief Cochran (guest star Hank Azaria). Ray is set to continue his on-going struggle during this series as he tries to achieve that

Captain’s Prize 2014 - Mark Quinn takes the honours The 190 participants in the 2014 Captain’s Prize were treated to a beautiful day with all arrangements for the proceedings going like clockwork for the entire day, which in itself was a fine testament to the Captain Senan who has worked tirelessly in his tenure to date for the club also putting in many miles on the road in his support of all the club teams throughout the season. Sixteen handicapper Mark Quinn was the man celebrating after picking up the coveted win on Captains prize day. Mark still a relative newcomer to the game held his nerve in experienced fashion with a strong finish over the closing holes despite a potential card destroying quadruple eight at the par four 13th hole. A really great recovery ensued after this major setback and he went on to record a winning total of 65 Nett. Mark expressed his sincere thanks to the Captain for the beautiful first prize also thanking the greens staff for the amazing condition in which the course was presented on the day and went on to thank his four-ball for their encouragement and to all the members who had passed on their sincere congratulations to himself on his big win. The runner up was another sixteen handicap player Dr Paul Armstrong who finished only one shot back on 66 Nett, with Michael Baldrick (18) third a further shot away with 67 Nett despite a few ugly double bogeys also on his card, Fourth spot went to Charlie Patton (16) also on 67 Nett with fifth place going to late finisher Jimmy Callan also with 67 Nett which proved a

The Gross prize went to the Centenary years Captains prize winner Aidan Boyle with a four over par 73, Aidan was a double prize winner also collecting the award for the longest drive on the 18th hole. Eric Reid(24) took the over 60’s prize and he too will regret a messy finish that might have seen him top the leaderboard.

The winner of Mr Senan Roartys Captains prize was Mark Quinn with the Captain and the Captains wife Jacqueline.

The categories on Saturday went to Keith Patterson (6) who picked up category one with 68 Nett, Sean MacIntyre (12) who won category two also with 68 Nett and to Michael Doyle (19) with 67 Nett. and to all the members for their continued courtesy and best wishes shown to him throughout his year, going on to say how proud he is to be Captain of Strabane golf club. Senan’s father Jimmy Roarty was also club Captain back in 1984 and his son Damien junior Captain in centenary year 2009.

Imagine your son being curious about smoking and thinking of e-cigarettes or marijuana as ‘cool’. Imagine your daughter being curious about alcohol and sampling wine to act as a ‘grown up’. Imagine your toddler screaming for sweets at the checkout and believing you are being a ‘cruel’ parent for depriving them from what everyone else has. If you witnessed your child selecting football teams to place a bet, what would you do? Would you feel you had a responsibility to protect them in any of the above scenarios? Consider what you may be up against. These are just a few of the growing number of industries that are targeting younger people and using addictive tendencies to boost sales. Remember, the sole purpose of these industries is to make profits. It is evident that the regulations, government guidelines and safeguards currently in place are proving inadequate to protect younger generations. I have been greatly surprised at how many TV advertisements there are to encourage, glamorise and normalise gambling in its many forms including lotto, bingo, sports betting and scratch-cards etc. We are also well used to sugary drinks being promoted as healthy. People who have never smoked are smoking e-cigarettes under the promoted illusion that they are harmless. Some beers in the supermarkets are cheaper than water. Alcohol is increasingly used by adults at children’s celebrations and wine is commonly portrayed and accepted as an essential part of a meal. Another industry that shows exponential growth due to increased accessibility, and whose profits may surpass the industries mentioned above is the porn industry. Some statistics show there is more money spent on porn than food however we seldom speak to

groomed for further exploitation as a result of this blatant portrayal of ‘normality’. How do we as parents protect our children? Perhaps a start would be to open up the lines of communication in an age appropriate way. Perhaps it is time to recognise what is going on, recognise the potential dangers and rid ourselves of our own personal inhibitions around hitherto ‘taboo’ topics. If we as parents are too uncomfortable to discuss certain subjects how can we expect our children to approach us with an embarrassing question or difficult situation? Is it better to make our children aware of potential dangers and pitfalls around pornography or simply ignore the subject and hope it goes away? As a man or woman, husband or wife, mother or father, how do you feel about pornography? Is this a discussion that needs to be opened up? What do you think is the best way to address this matter or potential danger?

Modern addictions are everywhere, are you equiped to deal with them for your childrens sake?

COUNTRY MUSIC SENSATION AT THE FIR TREES THIS WEEKEND From front page After performing to 3,500 people recently with Nathan Carter in Derry Lee has certainly hit the road running with several TV performances coming up over the next few weeks and a busy tour schedule Lee is still finding time behind the scenes writing and compiling his debut album which will be out in September. The album will be preceded by two more self penned singles. Lee’s second single ‘That Country Girl’ was released back in March and has become a big hit on radio across Ireland and has been adopted as

a favorite by country girls up and down the country who love a good jive. Lee’s brand new single due for release on 18th July is also written by himself and is called “rish In Your Eyes” and with his debut album out in September fans have a lot to look forward to. His newest single is about Irish people around the world and Lee is dedicating it to the fact Irish people never forget their roots and he hopes they will adopt it as their party anthem. After hearing that 3 terminally

ill Irish boys from one family in Roscommon had chosen a song – ‘Love Shine A Light’ as their song of hope a song that Lee had already recorded he decided to release it as his third single and donate all proceeds to the Join Our Boys charity that is raising funds for brothers Issac & George 5yo and Archie 8yo. The song hit number 1 on its first day of release staying there all week for an official Country Chart number 1 hit. Lee hopes it will raise much needed funds

for the boys and their campaign. – www. joinourboys.org With a great band and a set-list that has everyone dancing to the wee hours of the morning you just have to come along and see what’s in store from the hottest new

country artist that everyone is talking about this year. With the recent news that two more singles are on the way prior to Lee’s album launch in September, Irish Country music fans are in for a real treat on Sunday night.

THE BRIDGE GUNS & TACKLE

Along the River Bank

June has come and gone and the angling is going from strength to strength despite the low water conditions and seemingly endless sunshine. The lower reaches of the River Mourne and Finn is holding a good head of fish and reports suggest that the Foyle is also heavy with salmon and sea trout waiting for the weather to break and a splash of fresh water to carry them on their way. Spring Salmon and grilse have increasingly been falling to the rods of those dedicated men who donned the waders and ventured to the local rivers to intercept runs of fresh fish. Mr Eamon Boyle was one of those anglers who perserved and landed himself a glistening June grilse of 7lb. Over the past few weeks there has been a steady and sustained increase in salmon and sea trout entering the systems with some fine specimens falling to the rods of many anglers. Mr Paddy Donelley and his angling companion Mr E Maguire had some fantastic sport and were rewarded with a few quality ‘bars of silver’ for their early morning forays. Billys Pool has produced a some nice grilse and Strabane Bridge continues to fish well. Fresh sea-liced fish are beginning to be caught throughout the system with the Gravenue at Sion Mills, the Blackstone and Higgins Stream producing fish consistently.

Ridiculous Rainbows

Birchwood Trout Fishery has been producing the goods once again and placed some local anglers firmly among the angling elite. Mr Jimmy O’Connor has set a new standard for quantity and quality and continues to land huge bags of fantastic trout. Jimmy had a magnificent rainbow trout of over 20lbs last week and lifted a tagged fish worth £25. Jimmy is a dedicated angler who is always ‘in the fish’ and willing to share his wealth of angling wisdom. Good man Jimmy! Mr S Preston also had a few good evenings at the lake with Shipmans Buzzers accounting for some dazzling, finn perfect trout. Aaron Mc Garrigle had some fantastic sport on the ‘snake’ fly while Jimmy Kelly continues to record some fantastic bags of trout with the added bonus of a few Tagged trout too! Junior angler Eamon Friel caught his first rainbow at Birchwood this month and...what a trout! Well done Eamon, thats the first of many!! The angling at Birchwood has been fast and furious with small dry flies and suspended buzzers accounting for a large part of the sport. The New Rio Trout Line has proved popular with anglers who report that the line performs superbly in any conditions with a delicate presentation for the drys over a short cast yet able to punch out lures to amaizing distances.

Competition News

Lough fern was the venue for the Fern Classic earlier this month. The catch and release competition held by Milford Angling Club brought fantastic success for a well known local angler. Mr Harry Whorrisky won the competition outright, bagging both the heaviest fish and the longest fish. Harry had an excellent haul of good trout over the two days of the competition and came through as the ultimate champion on Lough Fern. Well done Harry..... outstanding angling!!

On the Sea Angling Scene

The recent Tope outing will go down in the anals of angling sucesses as the Tope trip of memories. The trip, chartered from Ratmullan was fantastic with conditions perfect and large Tope up for the fight. In all, 9 runs were recorded with 4 Tope boated to a weight of 36lb. Recent forarys to the coast have seen the sea angling pick up over the past few weeks and the sport has been prolific. The latest charter outing from Ratmullan on Sunday 29th June was a great success with many species recorded from Spurdog to Red and Tub Gurnard. The sport was fast and furious and then weather complemented what was a memorable and highly enjoyable outing. Sean Harte had a range of fish and Spurdog up to 18lb were a common sight on the deck of the boat.

On the Shoot
