May the Fuel be with you! - McGettigan’s of Lifford had a surprise visit during the rally weekend from a Star Wars’ Stormtrooper who has clearly decided that Donegal is the place to be. Since opening its doors last month, the Applegreen service station has hit the ground running and is now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Included in the picture is Conor McGettigan, the man behind the new project, which employs upwards of 20 people in the town. The man behind the new filling station is Lifford native, Conor McGettigan, who grew up in the town. He’s had a busy few months getting the project off the ground: “We built this service station on a green field site, so it was a massive undertaking, but we’ve had a fantastic response from the local community and we’re delighted to be bringing employment to the town. Dergfest 2016 headliners, DJ Dave Pearce and Irish Country Music superstar, Nathan Carter.
The summer is here and it’s time to get ready for Dergfest 2016. Now in its third year the festival has been extended to a three day event, and is delivering an ever richer variety of entertainment in the process. Previous years have seen headliners such as Westlife’s Shane Filan and UB40 come to Castlederg; however, the extra day this year has allowed the organisers to reach further, with dance music now a welcomed addition to the ever expanding bill. The headliner on the opening night on Friday, July 22 will be none other than DJ, producer and broadcaster Dave Pearce, who will be bringing his own special brand of euphoric uplifting trance to the Derg. He heads a stellar dance driven line-up that also includes Agnelli & Nelson, Liam Melly and DJ Q. The rise of dance music around the clubs in the north since the early nineties has never faltered, and this promises to be yet another night of floor pumping classics for an audience whose appetite for such has never wavered. While dance club culture remains in a healthy state across the country, the ever growing phenomenon of Irish Country continues to
thrive and pack them in – young and old – at dancehalls up and down the land. The undisputed king of the scene is Nathan Carter, who within a very short period had seen his star rise close to arena filling levels. Hard work, a passion for what he does and a genuine connection with all who follow him has seen Carter work the dancehalls right up to the Marquee in Cork. He is the bona fide Irish Country superstar and he’ll be headlining the second night of Dergfest on Saturday, July 23. Also on the bill that evening will be local singer Jim Devine, who has also become one of the leading lights of the scene following his success on RTE’s The Voice of Ireland in 2012. Fellow movers and shakers Gareth Pritchard, Anthony McBrien, Patricia Maguire and The Senators complete the bill for what will be a fantastic Saturday evening at the festival. Continued on page 27

Driving and Vision
NEW American Freshman Sunspecs
It has been shown in studies that up to one in five middle aged drivers have driven whilst knowing they have poor eyesight therefore increasing their risk of having an accident. Much of this is caused by people putting off their eye test after noticing their eyesight has deteriorated. There are many reasons people give for putting of an eyetest such as they don’t want to wear spectacles as it makes them feel old, too busy or worried about the cost. However spectacles are now a fashion statement and silhouette rimless frames are almost invisable and very light weight. Contact lenses are also an option and are very comfortable and safe to use. As for price many people get free eye tests on their medical card/ NHS and specs need not be expensive with ranges for all budgets. As for lack of time practices are now open to suit all patients needs. Donal McGovern Optometrist, Strabane explains;
“We realised a few years ago that patients not only wanted the option of been tested on a Saturday but also in the evening. So we now open on a Thursday night to 8 pm and a Saturday morning to 12.30 pm. Drivers must be aware that it is their legal responsibility to make sure they have adequate vision to drive and that failing to meet the visual standards required makes them dangerous drivers.” It is also extremely important to go for regular eye examinations whether you wear specs are not as the eye examination is a vital health check and should be part of everyone’s normal health regime. To book an eye test or for any further information such as who is entitled to a free sight test please call into our store at 20 Castle Street Strabane or phone (048) 71882506.

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

YOUR BRAND NEW MONTHLY TRAVEL GUIDE
Short break: Berlin and around A fascinating city still bearing the remnants of Prussian decadence, two World Wars and a divided past, Berlin is impossible to cover in one weekend – but it’s certainly fun trying You don’t get a much more vivid history than Berlin’s – the capital of the Prussian empire in the 13th century, the centre of political history during two world wars and a city divided for 28 years. Berlin is its own creature – a strange mixed palette of Prussian leftovers, an urban grittiness bearing the hallmarks of a prominent youth culture scene, residents from every corner of the world and ultra-modern architecture. It bears the scars of the past but never stops for a break – this city is constantly shifting and changing, and each district has its own distinct personality. Mitte offers an insight into the city’s history, all aspects of it from its neoclassical beginnings to the modern architectural masterpieces like the Sony Centre on Potsdamer Platz, or Sir Norman Foster’s glass dome atop the Reichstag. In contrast are the cool, artistic, emerging districts like Friedrichshain, Neukölln and Kreuzberg. Here are housed Berlin’s creative types, and the grey Communist blocks that everyone expects ooze a colour and its own flavour of multiculturalism. The remnants of Berlin’s beginnings still show over in Charlottenburg, and the palace is a beautiful sight to behold, while the more unsavoury vestiges of the past can be found in
the form of Oranienburg and Schöneweide’s labour camps, and Lichtenberg’s Stasi prison.. And yet, it’s easy to escape the ‘city feel’, with lakes and forests that spring up at the end of every S-Bahn line, such as Grunewald forest, Wannsee, Schlachtensee and Müggelsee, as well as the green expanse of Tiergarten right in the centre of Mitte. It may not exactly offer the most challenging walks (Berlin isn’t really known for hills and mountains) but it does offer some wonderfully pleasant walking trips and cycle paths. Berlin may ultimately be a city, but it’s such a big city so deficient in big businesses – you won’t see a skyscraper – that it has an incredibly chilled, international atmosphere, which is what most people miss when they leave. You could live in Berlin for a lifetime and still never The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin. Inset: Berlin Palace. quite grasp what it is that makes Berlin so special. It’s very easy to slip into Berlin zone C – especially when visiting Potsdam or travelling to Schönefeld airport – so you have to make sure that your travel ticket covers this. Gemma McHale Memorial 5K Run a massive success Aghyaran Centre recently hosted the fourth annual Gemma McHale 5K memorial walk and run. More than 400 athletes, fun runners and walkers turned out from Tyrone, Donegal, Fermanagh, Antrim, Down, Derry, Leitrim, Louth and Mayo. Over £20,000 was raised during the event with the monies going to a number of different charities. The McHale family have been staging the charity fundraiser in memory of 20-year-old Gemma, who lost her life after a fatal road incident outside Kesh on May 17, 2012. A hugely popular young woman, the event stands as a memorial of the positive impact Gemma had on all who knew her during her all too short life.
£60,000 In the past four years, over £60,000 has been raised for a number of worthy causes, including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Castlederg Comfort and Terminally Ill Fund and the Palliative Care Unit at Tyrone County Hospital. First over the line for the 5K was John McElhill from the Finn Valley AC in a time of 16:46. First female over the line was local woman Stacey Dolan, in a time of
Gemma McHale’s father Kieran with the cheque for the £24, 218.94 raised during this year’s Gemma McHale Memorial 5k Walk/Run.
20:33. Pat O’Loughlin, who received a cheque for £1000 going towards the MS Society from Kieran McHale, Gemma’s father, said it was an amazing gesture. “There was a great turn out and it was a lovely evening. A lot of charities, not just the MS
Society, benefit greatly from this wonderful event. People in this area are so good when it comes to charities. The annual 5K run is a great way to raise funds and in memory of a lovely young woman,” he explained.

known for her songs Sophie and the Irish standard ‘Only a Woman’s Heart’, Eleanor’s new album features exclusive artwork by the famed painter Chris Gollon. The seeds for Eleanor and Chris’ artist collaboration were sown after Eleanor bought Chris’ painting ‘Champagne Sheila’ after spotting it in a London gallery. Before leaving, Eleanor left some of her music for Chris and his agent to listen to. As a body of work, Eleanor’s recordings acquired the name Naked Music, which would give a better focus to the two artists’ desire for mutual expression. Being offered this title, and with some song suggestions, Chris was so taken with the songs he completed four paintings in response – two on the ‘Naked’ theme, and two others related to song titles and lyrics.

Two Monks and a woman – a Zen Lesson A senior monk and a river, why are you still carrying junior monk were trave- her?” Living in the present ling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As the monks were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. The young woman asked if they could help her cross to the other side. The two monks glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman. Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his journey. The younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. After rejoining his companion, he was speechless, and an hour passed without a word between them. Two more hours passed, then three, finally the younger monk could contain himself any longer, and blurted out “As monks, we are not permitted a woman, how could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?” The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the
This simple Zen story posted by Gassho has a beautiful message about living in the present moment. How often do we carry around past hurts, holding onto resentments when the only person we are really hurting is ourselves. We all go through times in life when other people say things or behave in a way that is hurtful towards us. We can chose to ruminate over past actions or events, but it will ultimately weigh us down and sap our energy. Instead we can choose to let go of what doesn’t serve us anymore and concentrate on the present moment. Until we can find a level of peace and happiness in the present circumstances of our lives, we will never be content, because ‘now’ is all we will ever have. Practice letting go of small things and you will find that whatever you practice you get better at. Remember this philosophy holds true for ‘holding on’ as well. Until the next time Tom Herron

‘Get Into Golf Project’ and ‘Summer Camp’ to launch this month and thoughout August
Strabane Golf Club Open Day a Huge Success Strabane Golf Club recently staged an Open Day on Friday 10th June 2016 and was attended by over 200 students, such was the interest from Holy Cross College that they returned the following Friday with another 70 students. Other schools who were in attendance at the Open Day were St Catherines (Barrack Street), Gael Scoil and Strabane Academy. The event was organised and co-ordinated by Seamus Duffy (PGA Professional), assisted by Michael McGeady (PGA Professional), Rory Leonard (Confederation Golf Ireland) and Freddie Patterson (SGC Junior Convenor). The aim of the Open Day was to deliver Taster sessions to encourage juniors to get into golf as Strabane Golf Club had seen the dwindling numbers of their junior branch over the past few years and particularly its girl membership who are noticeably under-represented. All the groups were able to avail of lessons
involving Driving, Chipping & Putting and all seemed to enjoy the experience and quite a few showed some natural talent. Hopefully this experience will encourage those students to come along to the upcoming Get Into Golf project July/August and Seamus Duffy’s Summer Camp as well. Contact Freddie on 02871 382007 or Seamus on 07712 877849 for further details. Club Captain, Brian Brolly expressed his appreciation to all the schools and their teachers who attended the Open Day and commented that all students were exemplary in their manner and behaviour and were a credit to themselves and their teachers.
said “Holy Cross College were delighted to take advantage of the opportunity to take 150 of our pupils to Strabane Golf Club for the recent open day. The quality of coaching delivered by Seamus Duffy, Michael McGeady & Freddie Patterson was first class, and as per usual the course was in immaculate condition. All the pupils really enjoyed the experience, which hopefully augurs well for the future of golf in Strabane. From a school perspective it is great to continue building links with our local clubs and we are optimistic that these partnerships will continue to be beneficial for all involved.”
Links with local schools
Golf for beginners
He also commented that Strabane Golf Club are committed to maintaining the links with the local schools and all involved with the club will do everything to encourage the development and progress of all students who take part in any future events or activities onsite at schools or at Strabane Golf Club. Holy Cross teacher Mr Stephen Donaghey
After the schools wrapped up it was the turn of the adults to try their hand at golf in the evening. About 25 men and women have taken up the recent offer of Golf for Beginners package for £99 which gives them a 2 month playing membership and 6 golf lessons with PGA Professionals Seamus Duffy & Michael
McGeady. SD Golf Academy with professional Seamus Duffy and assistant Michael McGeady are delighted to be associated with Strabane Golf Club. Seamus and Michael offer a full coaching service for all levels, from beginner to experienced player. Seamus grew up as a member of Strabane Golf Club and has a vast experience of coaching throughout the past 30 years. Seamus and Michael have been instrumental in Strabane Golf Clubs recent drive to the successful Get Into Golf programme offering a lesson package to all who signed up. Michael has had the lead in developing the recent schools programme which lead to over 270 children from local schools trying golf for the first time. Continuing on from this Michael will run a summer coaching programme at the club. SD Golf Academy looks forward to building a long relationship with Strabane Golf Club helping develop the membership and junior golf.

We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far

The great irony of Adele calling out a fan for videoing her performance during a concert in Italy is that fact that it probably would not have been talked about had someone not videoed the incident itself! For those of you who are not aware, a video was posted on Twitter in May showing the singer singling out a woman at a concert, asking her: “Could you stop filming me with that video camera? Because I’m really here in real life, you can enjoy it in real life rather than through your camera.” Adele added: “This isn’t a DVD, this is a real show.” Many have applauded Adele for taking this stance, while others have argued that videoing at concerts is just an accepted norm in modern life. Indeed, things are considerably different compared to the bootlegging days of old when a
person could financially benefit from unauthorised recordings of live performances with not one single penny going to the artists in question. Most of the footage recorded at concerts these days simply ends up on Youtube with no financial gain for either the fan or the artist(s). Whether the piracy factor was an issue for Adele, we cannot say, but it seems that the live concert experience was an issue for her, as it is for many performers who would prefer to be watched through the eyes of their fans and not through as mass of tiny screens. There is a view that the ‘here and now’ experience is being lost, which
Springsteen, Croke Park 2016

is unfortunate given the average price of a concert ticket these days. Alternatively, one could possibly argue: “I paid for my ticket and I can enjoy this show in any manner I please.”
Memento Some concert goers like to capture a few seconds as a memento of a show, although one wonders about people who film entire segments of a show or, absurdly, the full show. Personally, I just don’t get it and thankfully my phone technology is so primitive that I’m limited to enjoying a live concert via nothing but my own two eyes. Before I get too blasé and self-righteous about this I can’t escape the reality that I’m also a hypocrite. I was not in attendance at either of Bruce Springsteen’s performances at Croke Park in May. I did, however, keep an avid eye on the setlists as they happened
via one particularly useful website. On the Friday night the Boss and the band played ‘Jungleland’, which is without doubt one of his finest tracks. I was immediately regretting not going to the concert, yet I was happy in the knowledge that I was going to get a viewing of the performance thanks to someone kindly taking the time out to video this ten-minute saxladen epic during a live concert that cost them 100 Euros to attend! Later that night, laptop out, beverage in hand and in all my shameless hypocrisy, I enjoyed recorded footage of basically the entire three and a half hour show from a variety of angles. So there you have it: I don’t get people who feel the need to watch live concerts through a small screen, but in the early hours of the morning, away from prying eyes, I’m secretly glad they do it!
A festival swelling with greatness The third Swell Festival on Arranmore Island takes place on July 8 to 10 this month. Like previous years, a weekend packed with a variety of entertainment can be enjoyed in the most picturesque of locations off the west coast of Donegal. Over five stages will see performances from – to name but a few- David Kitt, The Wood Burning Savages, Clanns, Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Maire Ní Bhraoinain & Family, Tadgh, Clameens, Donal Dineen (DJ set), Silences, Rosie Carney, New Jackson (DJ Set), Eve Belle, Pox Men, Paul Tully, For Foresters, Árchú, Clann Mhic Ruairí, Constant Supply, Niki And The Heart Vandals, Inishowen Gospel Choir, Without Willow, Romie, Kate O Callaghan, R51, Mark Black, Gerard i2, Sister Ghost, SusieBlue, Declan MacLaifeartaigh, Hvmmingbyrd, Mongrel State, Slacker Symphony, Strength,
Donal Dineen (DJ set), Strength, Shammen Delly, Vincent, Turn It On Collective and Distorted Perspectives DJs, and Visuals by F12.

Shammen Delly and many more. There will also be a huge selection of poetry, spoken word, live art, DJs, games and other performances and activities throughout the weekend. The musical line-up is, as always, a fine reflection of the rich vein of musical talent we have in the North West, with Derry, Tyrone and Donegal all well repre-
sented on the bill. This year, the festival is also working in conjunction with the Earagail Arts Festival, Distorted Perspectives and Bluestack Records to bring ‘The Mountain Stage’ to the festival. It is a new programme of electronica, Americana, bi-lingual spoken word, and contemporary Scots/ Irish Gaelic events. Highlights include New Jackson (DJ set),
A most welcomed addition to the impressive bill this year will be pioneering DJ, photographer and filmmaker Donal Dineen. Donal is a familiar voice on national airwaves, having hosted now legendary radio shows (on RTÉ 2fm, Today FM, TXFM Dublin) and the muchloved No Disco on RTÉ Television in the early nineties. Donal is renowned for broadcasting forgotten electronic and world-music gems well into the wee hours and his set will have the perfect backdrop on the island. With such a wide variety of genres, this could be a year that sees everyone talking about the Swell Festival – a real game changer of a year. If the weather is kind it most certainly will be.
Total Music was saddened to learn of the passing of guitarist Henry McCullough on June 14 at the age of 72. While Henry had been in poor health in recent years, it was still sad news to wake to in what has been a year that has already taken so many iconic names in the world of music. Many would say that Henry had a rich musical CV. He did indeed. However, anyone who at any time collaborated with him can say the same for the time they shared with the man and his talent. Well-known musicians including Paul McCartney and Wings benefited greatly from working with Henry. He featuring on the hit James Bond theme, ‘Live and Let Die’ and the solo he played on Wings’ ‘My Love’ was a classic that he made up on the spot in front of a live orchestra. He played with Joe Cocker at the legendary Woodstock concert in 1969, becoming the only Irishman to perform there. He also played and toured with rock acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Roy Harper, Frankie Miller, Eric Burdon, Marianne Faithfull, Ronnie Lane and Donovan. He was also an acclaimed solo artist in his own right, with well-received albums like ‘Belfast To Boston’ and ‘Poor Man’s Moon’. Locally, he had a great rapport with a number of Strabane musicians and performed in the area on several occasions, including two full-band headline performances at the popular Strabane Unplugged sessions in the 2000s. Those gigs still remain fresh in the memory for all who attended and we were honoured to get not just one but two glimpses of a man whose passion for live performance had not faded with time. He was incredible and he will be missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. Henry McCullough 1943 – 2016 RIP.
Those Ghosts Have Something To Say, And It’s Loud. Strabane four-piece Those Ghosts have returned with a bang. After taking a year long break, they have re-emerged with a fresh new batch of songs and a reinvigorated appetite for the live stage. The first taster of the new material has just been released and it’s evident that their time away cutting the grass has not diminished their penchant for the fast-paced rock anthem. ‘Something I Said’, recorded at Neon Noise Studios in Strabane, is a pacey, high-octane, guitar-driven track that chomps and stomps throughout with even a welcomed hint of Thin Lizzy flavoured twin harmonies. It’s a track begging for a live performance and it got just that during its successful single launch show at Dicey Riley’s on June 18. The song is available to download exclusively at http://thoseghosts.bandcamp. com/ Following three successful comeback shows so far this year, the band are preparing for another extensive period of touring, hitting the festivals and releasing more new music. With the single and video for ‘Something I Said’ unleashed upon a willing and receptive loyal fan base, things are getting busy once again for Those Ghosts. A busy band sparks a busy local scene, so we look forward to plenty more on the way from these masters of the anthemic.

Flavour of the month... Our flavour of the month for July is Strabane comedian, Ruairi Woods. Five dream dinner guests (living or dead)? Gordon Ramsay, Bill Burr, Kurt Russell, Dave Grohl, Chris Pratt.
A Favourite holiday destination?
New York.
Nobody really as I was dared to do stand-up in the first place. Although my all time favourites who inspire me to be funnier are Billy Connolly, Richard Pryor, Bill Burr, Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams.
Big Trouble in Little China. I’m a huge Kurt Russell fan, especially anything he did with John Carpenter. This film is always an easy and fun watch. One of those films you can switch off and relax to.
Favourite food ?
Americanised classics: chilli dogs/mac and cheese/ribs/wings/burgers/brisket/pulled pork etc.
Favourite type of music?
Everything from Biffy Clyro to The Beatles to Daft Punk to Prince to Take That to Fleetwood Mac.
What are you watching on telly these days?
Peaky Blinders/Game of Thrones/It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia/Parks and Recreation/ Sons of Anarchy.
An ideal night in?
My girlfriend and I, a Chinese, films and as much McCoys and Vanilla Coke as I can drink. My body’s a temple.
Most embarrassing moment?
When I was working at the tills in the shop, I once genuinely licked a customer’s change before I gave it to him. I still can’t figure out why to this day.
All time favourite actor and why?
A favourite film and why?
Page 2
Who inspired you to be a comedian?
Kurt Russell, as he can make even the worst film tolerable.
Who or what makes a comedian laugh?
Proudest moment?
Supporting Kevin Bridges.
I enjoy the miserable Northern Irish sense of humour, everyone has a member of their social circle who complains about everything from the price of a pint to buses being late etc.
Favourite response of a heckle?
Recently, I personally enjoyed a friend of mine being heckled by a man who said, “You’re wearing shoes!” My friend replied, “That is the worst heckle ever. You’re just pointing out what you see. Who taught you how to heckle? Roy Walker?!”
An ideal night out?
I will always have a soft spot for Diceys Lockdown disco.
Something you love about Strabane? How supportive the people are. They support everyone in every endeavour. It’s a great thing.
Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future? Genuinely? That the ridiculous amount of talent in this town (myself excluded haha) get the recognition it deserves. Ruairi Woods will be performing his latest stand-up show, “Woodylicious”, at the Alley Theatre, Strabane on August 27. Strabane comedian Ruairi Woods. The Herald | July 2015
Liverpool and Man United fans reignite old rivalries for charity rematch
A charity football rematch between local Liverpool and Manchester United fans is to take place at Melvin Sports Complex on Saturday, August 28. Both teams will be competing for the Terri Devine Memorial Shield with all money raised going towards the Meningitis Research Foundation. Glenmornan schoolgirl Terri lost her life to meningitis in 2008 at the age of 16. Everyone involved in the match is hopeful that it will be every bit as successful as last year’s inaugural tie between the two sides. One of the organisers is Shaun ‘Amo’ Hamilton, who originally hails from Liverpool but is now based in Strabane. He told the ‘Herald’ that he is very optimistic that they can build on the success of last year’s charity tie, where the Manchester United fans came out on top after a dramatic penalty shootout.
Banter “As part of the Liverpool team we’ll be out to avenge last year’s outcome. We have even got a few lads from Liverpool coming over to support the event. There will be a good bit of banter and ‘stick’ between the rival fans but that’s all part of the craic on
the day. Ultimately, it’s about having a great day and raising, hopefully, a lot of money for a very important cause,” he explained. The charity, itself, is one that is close to Shaun’s heart on a personal level. “Basically, I had meningitis as a teenager and I’ve always wanted to give something back. On my first day working in Strabane I saw two people walking down the street: one was wearing a Manchester United jersey and the other was wearing a Liverpool jersey. I had never seen that before and it stayed in my head. I started to think about getting a match organised between the two sets of fans with my obvious chosen charity being the Meningitis Research Foundation. Patsy Porter got in contact as he had meningitis before as a child. Last year’s game was a massive success and we went on to raise
Shaun ‘Amo’ Hamilton and Patsy Porter, organisers of the charity match.
£3,145. We want to hopefully double that this year,” added Shaun. An impressive promotional video has been put together by the organisers ahead of the tie on August 28, and it can cur-
rently be viewed online. The rematch will kick-off at 2pm. To make a donation to the Meningitis Research Foundation simply text MAMO77 and your amount to 70070 – For example: MAMO77 £5.

Closing proceedings on Sunday, July 24 will be local legends The Logues, who have become one of the busiest and most in demand bands in the country; it’s no surprise given the high octane nature of their live shows that will instigate a mutual break of sweat both on stage and within the audience. Call it ‘psycho ceilidh’, ‘whiskey-soaked folk’ or simply ‘partying music’ – whatever it is it’s the perfect way to close any festival. Also on the bill on the Sunday are Ryan Sheridan and the 4 Of Us. Brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy have been producing rich melodic folk rock for almost thirty years under the 4 Of Us banner. From the timeless anthem ‘Mary’ to recent pearls like ‘Bird’s Eye View’, the Murphy brothers remain one of the country’s strongest songwriting forces. Dergfest 2016 is a weekend that offers a bit of everything this year and it promises to be one of the highlights of the summer. Tickets are going fast, so get yours now to avoid disappointment. They are on sale at www.eventbrite.co.uk and are priced from £11.49 to the very generous £37.75.

As we ‘Turn The Corner’ and the great ‘isms’ of the world gear up once again to work their repeatedly failed magic on our lives, Paddy offers a third way – ‘Solutionsim’. Using imagery, satire, insight and the odd song he picks through the faults of the inequitable mire Ireland has become and offers a wealth of solutions that will make it the paradise we all know it could and should be.
