Guess Sunspecs
Much of this is caused by people putting off their eye test after noticing their eyesight has deteriorated. There are many reasons people give for putting of an eyetest such as they don’t want to wear spectacles as it makes them feel old, too busy or worried about the cost. However spectacles are now a fashion statement and silhouette rimless frames are almost invisable and very light weight. Contact lenses are also an option and are very comfortable and safe to use. As for price many people get free eye tests on their medical card/NHS and specs need not be expensive with ranges for all budgets. As for lack of time practices are now open to suit all patients needs. Donal McGovern Optometrist, Strabane explains “We realised a few years ago that patients not only wanted the option of been tested on a Saturday but also in the evening. So we now open on a Thursday night to 8pm and a Saturday morning to 12.30pm. Drivers must be aware that it is their legal
responsibility to make sure they have adequate vision to drive and that failing to meet the visual standards required makes them dangerous drivers. It is also extremely important to go for regular eye examinations whether you wear specs are not as the eye examination is a vital health check and should be part of everyone’s normal health regime. The effect of acupuncture during Pregnancy/IVY and labour Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Shane Filan to headline Dergfest 2014.
On the Sunday, the hugely talented Riff Raff, local legends The Logues and other special guests will have the crowd on their feet, as will another local lad, destined to be a national star very soon, the one and only Lee Matthews. Speaking to the Herald, one of the organisers, Olga Walls, said that the town is buzzing with anticipation ahead of this first time event. “This festival is the first of its kinds and we’re very excited to be able to host it. It’s fantastic that alongside a superstar like Shane Filan we’re able to showcase local bands as well. When we first looked to organise the festival we certainly didn’t envisage it becoming as big as it is. The town is totally behind us. We had the Fleadh in Castlederg last year and also the Soapbox Derby and they were major successes and well supported. It
encouraged us to push forward and organise something like this. Its fast approaching and we’re so looking forward to it. For Castlederg and all surrounding areas it’s a fantastic thing to have right here on our doorstep,” Olga enthused. Tickets are on sale now priced at £22.50 plus booking fee for the Saturday night and £10 for the Sunday night. Tickets are available to purchase from www.ticketmaster.ie and in the following supporting bars: Townhouse Bar, Logues Bar, Gallens Bar, Micky Joes Bar and The Derg Arms and local sponsor, Hamilton’s Spar all located in Castlederg town. The organisers are looking for volunteers to help out during the festival. Positions to be filled are under Technical Staff (Cleaning) and Marshals.

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats Every month, the Herald speaks to a local son or daughter, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond where they grew up we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for home and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Eugene Ward. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I left Strabane in August 2012 to move to Lima, Peru. I had been there before and I had met a girl, so I decided to go back to be with her. It was a huge risk, of course, as I had previously been working in Santander, Spain and I left my job there to go to Peru. When I arrived I had a tourist visa which enabled me to stay for only six months, but I got permanent employment and the company helped me to get a work visa. I married the girl in question on February 22, 2014 in a civil ceremony and we will have the religious ceremony in Strabane in August, so the risk certainly paid off. What’s it like for a Strabane man/ woman where you are now? In this era of Internet communication I don’t feel so far away from Strabane as I see what is happening on people’s Facebook pages and I talk to my family regularly on Skype. Lima
is a lot different of course and the traffic, in particular, is chaotic. One thing I find strange is the seasons, as they are different from Europe. As Peru is in the Southern Hemisphere, it is winter in June and summer in December, which I can’t get used to.
light in summer and winter, as there is around 13 hours to daylight in midsummer and 11 in mid winter. I miss the long summer days when it doesn’t get dark until around 11pm and even the short winter days when it gets dark at 3.30pm.
Where in Strabane did you grow up? I grew up in Derry Road, and there are many things about Strabane that I miss.
Something you miss about Strabane? Strabane is a town with a great community spirit, and in Lima, perhaps because it is a big city of around 9 million people, this doesn’t seem to Something Strabane has that your be present, so I certainly miss that. new home doesn’t have? wouldn’t have moved here if I hadn’t met the girl I am now married to, as Peru is more dangerous than Spain and Portugal and without a local person to guide me life would be very difficult. The E-Cigarette:
Good Business and Better Health
AURA
Wellbeing & Beauty Just a sample of the huge amounts of products available to suit all budgets!
The ever growing popularity of electronic cigarettes is proving to be beneficial to smokers intent on cutting down or quitting and also as a potentially successful business venture. Ivape is one such enterprise capitalizing on people hoping to ‘kick the habit’ and deals in electronic cigarette supplies and accessories. The local venture is operated by Strabane man, Niall McGinnis and the ‘Herald’ caught up with him recently to find out how he got involved in this fast growing line of business. “I started using e-cigarettes myself about two and a half years ago. Seeing how well I was getting on with them made me look more into it. Work colleagues who were smokers always asked me about them and tried them out themselves. Soon they were asking if I could get them some as well. From there I could see that there was a gap in market, so I started off with a small order just to see how it would go. After a while it really gathered momentum and I soon realised that this was going to be a success,” recalls Niall. Just over two and a half years and Niall is still using an e-cigarette and can feel the health benefits because of it. “All the smoking problems that I would’ve had before such as a wheezy chest and phlegm in the morning are now gone. Customer feedback is exactly the same,” he explains. Electronic cigarettes are made of four ingredients: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, food flavourings and nicotine. The propylene glycol and nicotine help to replicate the smoking experience but without the drawbacks. But how safe are these e-cigarettes? “I stock only high quality products and when I order in new lines I put them on sale only when I have tried and tested a sample and I am sure of

its ease of use, minimum maintenance and reliability,” explains Niall. “Anything I sell I use myself, so I will be able to advise you on its operation and be able to offer you alternatives based on your own needs.” E-cigarettes have evolved greatly from when they first became available. At first they were very basic and essentially a plastic cigarette. However, the popularity is now such that elite brands are available with the ability to accommodate all levels of smoking. “It has developed greatly since its beginnings with the plastic cigarettes. It’s a fast changing market and there are new products out every week. In fact it’s quite hard to keep up. As with most lines of business you get different manufacturers producing different types of e-cigarettes. There’s low quality, high quality and extreme quality,” explains Niall.

“They certainly are a much cheaper alternative,” stresses Niall. “There has been a big increase in the amount of people using e-cigarettes. People are more health conscious now. You only have to see the people out running to realise that. This product is certainly something that can compliment the new health drive the people are on. For me personally, I feel like I haven’t given up smoking but also don’t feel the drawbacks that I had from the regular cigarettes.”

With real cigarettes getting more expensive as time goes by, what would be the price range for e-cigarettes? “You can get them quite cheap at around £16. The highest price kit that I would stock would be around £50. The prices do vary and all catering to specific needs to the customer,” says Niall. In comparison to what many would spend on regular cigarettes, the incentive to switch to e-cigarettes could therefore be an issue not just of health but also finance.

Cutting edge talent at NWRC Strabane For the fourth year running students from NWRC’s Strabane Campus have proven they can cut it with the North West’s best at the College’s Annual Hair & Beauty Cross Campus Competition. The event sets Level 2 and Level 3 students from the Strabane, Limavady and Foyle Campuses against each other across ten technically and creatively challenging competitions. This year the judging panel was made up from professional stylists and salon owners, including former Strabane student Cheryl Scanlon, and members of the NI World Cup Hairdressing Team. They felt the standard was exceptional across the board.

Tracey Lucas from the Level 3 Hairdressing programme went on to join NWRC’s 16 strong delegation at the NIHA All Ireland Competition in Belfast and secured a 3rd place finish in Junior Creative Daystyle – up against leading junior professional stylists from across the province. Fellow College student Jemma Cooke won the All Ireland Junior Champion title – the second year in a row that NWRC have scooped this prestigious title. In total North West Regional College’s Hair & Beauty Academy won 10 first, second and third place medals plus 12 further top ten finishes, further

College celebrates Learning Community Pupils North West Regional College’s Strabane Campus held its annual presentation of awards for pupils of Holy Cross College, Strabane Academy and Knockavoe who have completed vocational qualifications at the Derry Road campus, alongside their academic studies in school. Presentations were made to the Year 12 pupils who have gained occupational studies in Joinery and Brickwork, Early Years Childcare, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, and Business Administration over the past two years. The pupils have benefitted from the College’s expert teaching on these practical courses which they attend one day per week to supplement their GCSE studies. Definitely, Definitely! Liam Gallagher had pockets of Manchester, Strabane and Derry in a tizzy recently with his ‘cryptic’ activity on Twitter. First he tweeted an ‘O’, then an ‘A’, then an ‘S’ and then, well you get the general idea. That Liam Gallagher can spell will forever be a bigger scoop than the day Oasis actually do confirm that they will play again, because let’s face it – they will! As it turned out, Liam’s tweets did not lead to an announcement that Oasis will be reforming but they were the result of a night on the drink with his old band mates. Oasis do not need to announce their reformation because, many believe, they’ve never really split up. Of course they will play again! The Oasis train ran out of steam somewhere along the lines in the 2000s. Some would argue that it ran out of steam as early as 1997 with the over-hyped and over-layered ‘Be Here Now’ album. Each album brought nothing new to the table and gone was the hunger and enthusiasm of the first two records, which was sadly unavoidable when fame took the Gallagher brothers out of Burnage and into Downing Street.
Ultimately what made Oasis so endearing and magnetic was replaced by a slick, tight and completely less interesting variation of the set-up as original members were replaced by technically superior but ultimately faceless figures in the background as Noel looked on bored and uninspired by all that once lit a fire in his belly and Liam stood still, glaring out to the audience exuding the ‘presence’ that was more vacant, limited and empty than anything mystical or endearing, with a knackered voice that was well low on the juice that it had in the nineties. In short, Oasis were burnt out and plodding the same old path. Something had to be done. A break was needed and that’s what they took in 2009.
Colourful characters, the Gallaghers, Noel & Liam.
a greater stature. It all lies in the old adage of absence making the heart grow fonder and Oasis are no different and they’re playing a similar game, that’s all. The supposed fall-out between Liam and Noel is enough to keep the column inches going and give the eventual ‘reformation’ a hands across the divide spectacle for anyone who actually believes that there is such a fall-out between the brothers.
The last few years have allowed both to indulge in side projects but Oasis will be on stage again soon, doing exactly what they were doing in 2009. However, with the time off, Noel will be looking a bit more excited and Liam will get a lot more Greater Stature mileage out of his vacant, empty Revisionism is an interesting stare out into the Etihad Stadium. thing. For Free? Well that’s not how we do it here! There’s no Glasgowbury festival this summer but fear not because we at Total Music are going to hold our own festival in its place this July. We are presently taking applications now from landowners, owners of a good PA system, gig riggers, sound technicians, security companies, food and drink vendors, haulage companies, sponsors and portable toilet hire companies. Preference will be given to those who are willing to showcase their services for free, as the majority of the budget for the event will be going to the artists performing on the stage. Such a proposal would be rightly laughed all the way to the nearest hospital, where those making such a request can get all the help they clearly need. Yet flip it all around We want paid! - A huge collective of Derry musicians who recently gathered at Radio Foyle in Derry. to where everyone gets paid apart from the musicians and we have a situation that is all over recent years has been (and contin- together following the latest request for them ues to be) captivated by the innovative and to “showcase” their talents for free and effectoo familiar right now. diverse indigenous music that reverberates tively told festival organisers that they would Last month, Derry City Council sent letters to across the banks for the Foyle. Without musicians there is no event and a for their services to be respected for what Anyone who has visited Derry at any time collective of Derry musicians rightly pulled they are, just like those who do get rightly paid
for their contribution to such events. Many of these musicians are full-time and many have spent endless hours, days and even years honing their craft. Many of them are of an age and a local standing that they are long beyond the patronising point of “showcasing” their talents. We all know their talents! We know their songs. Go to a Gerard i2 gig. Go to a SOAK gig. Go to a Paddy Nash gig. Go to a Those Ghosts gig. People know and sing every word, just as they do ‘God Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys and I don’t think they’re coming to Derry at their own expense. This issue is not exclusive to Derry but it applies right across the country. There are too many local artists that are not being paid their dues. Yes, some will offer their services for free, which is their right if they wish and circumstances may indeed dictate that they do in their initial stages, but in reality how many benefit from continually “showcasing” their talents for free? For most, the next gig they’re offered will be another freebie and if an artist doesn’t put value on themselves how do they ever expect an audience to do so? Yes, there comes a time when playing for free is justified and necessary, like a charity event, but a line in the sand needs to be drawn or some will take advantage. So the message is clear to the powers that be – pay your musicians. But the message to musicians is also simple – are you worth it? Let’s see how this pans out.

ife is a busy business right now for Lynsey McGarrigle. The 23 year old model and designer from Strabane would not have it any other way. From her initial foray into the world of modelling aged just 16, right up to the present day, she is living proof that drive and ambition can still lead to success, even when the current economic climate may try to suggest otherwise. While still glamming it up on the catwalks, she has also been running her own fashion business since 2012 called Mohawk, a highly innovative and accommodating enterprise where the manta is: always dare to be different! Lynsey personally has good experience with such ideas as she comes from a design background without actually being taught how to make clothes herself. Pull-
ing her sleeves up and gaining experience in the industry has proven to be the best education all, with success coming in 2010 with the Adria Award for Best Fashion Designs. She was also a Finalist in Whitney Ports Style Stars Competition and won the Desmond and Sons Award Cup for Best Textiles Designs in 2012. “I more or less taught myself as I went along,” Lynsey explains to the ‘Herald’, chatting from her home last week. “It’s a real hands-on approach. When I left college I decided to go for it. I was able to go on and do my degree but I thought in this line of business its experience that really counts. So I went out into the industry and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. I know it wasn’t probably the most practical decision given the economic climate at the minute but I have to say, at present the business has really gathered momentum and really been out there a lot more over the last year.” With business and her modelling career still thriving, Lynsey has found the time for both to take her down other exciting avenues, such as her role as a judge in the recent Miss Derry Final, which took place on May 29 at the Whitehorse Hotel. Not only was she a judge but she is now working with the winner. “I was absolutely thrilled to be a judge for the Miss Derry Final 2014,” she enthuses. “They would also like me to make the lucky lady who won the crown the Evening Gown for the Miss Ireland Final in Dublin on July 17. To say I am over the moon is a phenomenal understatement! I am filled with nostalgia as four years ago I stood on the stage as Miss Tyrone and now my creation will stand on the same stage. It’s an absolute pleasure and honour to design such a special piece and it just shows that a dream can

Luckily enough I’m one of them and I’ll actually be opening Christopher’s show at the Guildhall in Derry on August 23,” explains Lynsey. While it may appear that Lynsey doesn’t have a single moment to herself, her work is clearly a labour of love and she also holds great value in giving something back to the North West. “It’s great to see things going in a positive direction,” she says. “It’s what I love to do so I’m just happy that I can fulfil what I want to do and do it locally, giving back to the community that has supported me. Yes, there is more of a platform for fashion over in London but I would rather try and develop something here in the society where I learnt my technique and craft.” She is certainly moving in the right circles and making the right kind of contacts through networking, which will continue to open all kinds of doors. As for the present, the Christopher Reid showcase is Lynsey’s main focus.
come true.” If you think all of the above is more than enough to keep Lynsey busy, think again. She is also working on a showcase of her own fashion collection for London based fashion designer, Christopher Reid, who worked previously with the late Alexander McQueen. Originally
from Derry, Reid is returning home to launch his new brand called Topherlilly with Lynsey cast as one of the models. “Through talking to Christopher and getting to know him he decided that he would like to give local designers the opportunity to showcase within his own show, so there will be ten designers.
“It’ll be very chaotic but I’m lucky to have a great team of people behind me. I’ve got three superb models: Tara O Brien, Caroline McMenamin and Hannah Kelly and they will be wearing my garments. I’ve got a fantastic make-up artist in Lisa Dillon, who has previously worked in London Fashion Week. I also have Conor O’Kane on board, who is a fantastic hair-stylist from Body and Mind. So I’m really looking forward to that. On the day I’ll actually be away getting ready to walk for Christopher Reid in the second half of the show so I’m leaving it in the capable hands of my team of people. I have every faith that they’ll do a fantastic job,” she predicts. With the momentum gathering on a daily basis, the ‘Herald’ wondered if
Lynsey has set any kind of strategy or three year plan. “I think it’s best to jump one hurdle at a time,” she replies. “That way you can take things as they come. I would like to see myself going towards developing something positive in the North West, getting good quality out there, something special that people can afford within this economic climate. Clothes are a way for people to express themselves.” “They can cheer people up. On a grey, dreary day if you put on something bright it can automatically lift your mood. If people look and feel good on the inside they can approach things in a different manner. As Marilyn Monroe said: “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and watch her conquer the world!”

Jim’s new album has ‘Ireland turning Country!’
Jim Devine’s latest single hits the nail on the head – ‘Ireland’s Turning Country’. While many former finalists from television talent shows fade from view soon after, the same cannot be said for the Douglas Bridge man, who reached the final of ‘The Voice of Ireland’ in 2012. Within just two short years Jim has forged a successful career in Ireland’s ever growing Country and Dance scene, packing halls up and down the country. After a succession of hit singles he has now released his debut album ‘Devine Country’ and it seems that those who fill the dancefloors just can’t get enough of it. “The response has been great with a lot of copies sold up and down the country,” says Jim, speaking to the ‘Herald’ from home on what is now a rare day off for Ireland’s newest Country sensation. “I’m lucky enough to have a great record label in Sharpe Music and they have distributed the album throughout Ireland and it seems to be flying off the shelves, which is brilliant.” Before releasing the album, Jim decided first to establish himself on the scene with a series of singles.
Singles
Jim Devine’s popularity in the Irish country music scene is continuing to grow if the response to his new album ‘Devine Country’ is anything to go by. Page 4 September 2013 The Herald
“Instead of bringing out an album right away I wanted to bring out a few singles over the period of a year and get people used to my music, so much so that by the time the album came out they were ready and waiting for it.
Jim’s album ‘Devine Country’ peaked at no.2 in the Irish iTunes Country Album charts.
Looking back, it worked out well and the reviews have been good so I’m over the moon,” he says. Jim picked the majority of the songs himself, with a little help from his manager Nicholas McCann. While his fans will all have their favourite tracks, we wondered if Jim had a favourite. “My favourite song on the album is probably ‘I’m Already There’ which I initially did as a duet with Kian Egan during the final of ‘The Voice of Ireland’. The band and I do it now as part of the show. There are great jiving songs on the album and a couple of Irish songs as well. There are also a few originals and a couple of American country tracks on there because I do love American
country. So there’s a good mix in there to cater for young and old,” he explains. ‘Devine Country’ peaked at number two in the Irish iTunes Country Album Charts. The top spot was claimed by the legend himself, Johnny Cash, as his posthumous and much anticipated ‘lost’ album ‘Out Among The Stars’ proved to be the only thing that could keep Jim off number one. ‘Devine Country’ was recorded in Longford and produced by the George Martin of Irish Country himself, Jonathan Owens, who has worked with the likes of Nathan Carter and Derek Ryan. The most recent release from the album was the single ‘Ireland’s Turning Country’ and it is backed by a wonderful video shot by Strabane up-and-coming film-maker Ciaran Duffy.
and Jim well and truly making his mark on the Irish Country scene with hit singles like ‘Leighann Loves To Dance’, ‘Baby Baby’, ‘Blink Of An Eye’ and now ‘Ireland’s Turning Country’, his arrival was well and truly confirmed at the Sunday World All Ireland Country Music Awards where he and his band claimed the ‘Best New Band of the Year’ Award and Jim also claimed ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Hot Country Awards. “I have a great band behind me and they’ve all played with a lot of the big names on the scene. They’re all strong players; they know the scene inside out and are just a fantastic live unit. Things are going brilliantly. I was even asked to be a mentor on the TG4 show Glor Tire, where I supported a singer called Patricia Maguire. It’s mad to think I was being mentored myself not so long ago and then given the chance to mentor on Glor Tire! It’s all good exposure and I have no complaints. Things are definitely going well and all in the right direction,” concludes Jim.
“In the song, Cork and Donegal are mentioned so we filmed it in both places. Fair play to Ciaran because he had to work around the band’s touring schedule so he came down and worked around us and did a fly-on-the-wall type video. I was really happy with the end result. He’s such a talented Devine Country is available now young fella,” stressed Jim. on Sharpe Music or available for So with the album now released download from iTunes.
