Your sunglasses are much more than a fashion accessory
£35
(€50)
Sunglasses can give you instant Simon Cowel cool, Victoria Beckham glamour, or the rock star hipness of Bono. But they are much more than a fashion accessory. Sunglasses are an essential tool in safeguarding the health of your eyes and the surrounding tissue. UV radiation increases your odds of getting cataracts, which cloud the eye’s lens and lead to diminished eyesight. It has also been linked to macular degeneration, incurable disease of the macula, a part of the retina that is essential for sharp vision.
Cornea Other UV-related eye problems are pterygium and pingueculum. A pterygium occurs when
the conjunctiva, the tissue that lays over the white of the eye, grows into the cornea. A pingueculum is a yellowish bump of tissue on the white of the eye. As around 80% of damage from UV occurs before the age of 18 it’s important to get children used to wearing hats and sunglasses, to protect their eyes. It is also important for children to have regular eye examinations throughout their lives. For children and adults who wear glasses, prescription sunglasses are available in a range of stylish designs. Costing from only £35 (€50) for children and £59.95 (€85) for adults complete with tinted prescription lenses, frame and UV protection. Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Katie aims to be the ‘Face Of NI’ and to raise awareness An Ahyaran teenager is just three steps away from becoming 2015’s Face of Northern Ireland. Katie Devlin (18) will travel to Armagh City Hotel on June 21 to compete in finals of the ‘Face of Northern Ireland’ charity beauty pageant. The chosen charities for this year’s pageant are Headway, which helps people with brain injury, and Down’s and Proud, which supports children and parents living with Down’s syndrome. “These are two amazing charities that deserve and need our help,” explained Katie, speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week. “I was roped into entering this pageant but now that I’ve made it through to the finals I have to say I’m really enjoying it, and it has given me the opportunity to help raise funds and awareness about these two great charities.” Katie has organised a series of bake sales, the last of which will place at Katie’s local Parish Hall in Castlederg on June 20. She has also kindly received donations from Sawyers Transport in Lurgan, where her father works. “Basically any donation, no matter how big or small, will make a difference. I then plan to split the monies raised right down the middle for the two charities,” she said. In her support of the Headway charity, Katie is also planning to highlight the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling. “I want to be able to teach people about the consequences of not wearing a helmet. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular and some of the
Katie Devlin, Ahyaran
people taking it up are not fully aware of the dangers. My parents’ cycling group are taking part in an Ahyaran Atlantic Cycle soon and I plan this weekend to take a photo of all 40 odd members of the group with their helmets on and also stage a fall to highlight the dangers of not wearing one,” explained Katie. Katie will participate in the Senior Over-18s category, which will consist of 20 contestants and three sections. The prizes include two nights in Kent at the Garden of England with a gala party and meal, a trip to Disneyland, Paris for the Face of Europe and the World competitions and also a professional photo shoot in September with a highly professional makeup and hair team.

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to 19 year old musician, Adam Dolan. A fond childhood memory? Getting up early every Saturday morning for Sion Swifts FC A Favourite holiday destination? Euro Disney, Paris. A favourite film and why? ‘The Shawshank Redemption’: it is just an all round fantastic film. Favourite food? Kebabs. Who or what makes you laugh? Improvised everyday situations: this makes me laugh because the answers are so unexpected. An ideal night out? An ideal night out is going out and having a great night , ‘pulling’ and not being too drunk.
Musician, Adam Dolan
An ideal night in? Watching ‘Match of the Day’ then a movie with a munch. Your dream gig? (bands, artists living or dead) Id love to see Queen, but obviously can’t. Favourite guitarist and why? Tommy Emmanuel and Steve Vai. Tommy because he can do a band’s job on the guitar and Steve Vai because, well, just watch ‘Tender Surrender’! Something you love about your town? I love how much natural talent we have in Strabane. The amount of great singers and guitarists in this small town is simply unbelievable. Something about your town that you miss? The old Melvin lol.
Something you’d love to see happen locally in the future? More oppurtunities for young talent of all kinds Someone who makes you proud to be from here? My granda Bobby Moore and uncle Ryan Dolan.

Value and exchange rate makes Donegal groceries 22% cheaper than Asda Shoppers from Strabane & Donegal can save more than 22 per cent by shopping at Kavanagh’s SuperValu Ballybofey in Donegal. Competitive prices and the favourable exchange rate means a typical trolley of everyday groceries can cost almost a quarter less when bought in Donegal compared to the same trolley of shopping bought in Asda in Strabane. Store manager Charlie Ferry commented; “Current exchange rates and deflation in the ROI grocery market means it pays to shop at Kavanagh’s Super Valu Ballybofey, unlike our multiple competitors we re-invest in our local communities, support our local suppliers and hire local people!, so get over to our store today and make the savings!” A trolley of shopping from Kavanagh’s will cost around between €10 and €15 / £7 or £11 less than the equivalent goods purchased in Asda in Strabane. New Skin for fhe Old Ceremony Season two of Nic Pizzolatto’s intense crime saga True Detective will premiere on Sunday, June 21 on HBO at 9pm, and will be simulcast on Sky Atlantic at 2am UK time (followed by a primetime airing on Monday June 22). Season two will be another eight-episode run written entirely by Pizzolatto. It will centre on three police officers and a career criminal, who must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of the murder of a corrupt manager of a fictional Californian city. His body is found on a lonely stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, on the eve of a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that could permanently alter freeway traffic patterns in the city. The event sets Level 2 and Level 3 students against each other across ten technically and creatively challenging competitions. The showcase also featured a fantastic dance performance from Ascent, the College’s very own Dance company, and concluded with a superb catwalk finale where a selection of the creative talents where modelled to the enthralled audiences. Life changing & life saving for Joanne
Editorial Feature
35-year-old Joanne Lloyd is 5ft to find I could still enjoy curries when Food 5ins tall and has lost nearly 10st in Optimising! “I actually prefer home-made curries now 20 months. Joanne says “I’ve had hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) for about 15 years, which contributed to my weight gain, and I also experienced anxiety and depression. I felt tired and unwell all the time, had terrible skin, and suffered from joint and muscular pain. I also knew I could be heading for a heart attack unless I lost weight – even so, it wasn’t until I saw a photo of myself at my cousin’s wedding that I decided to get my weight under control once and for all. “My mum had been to Slimming World and she’d even given me some of her copies of Slimming World magazine, which might have been a subtle hint! So, when I saw a board advertising a local group, I decided to give it a go – and I’m so glad I did. I love the positivity and support of IMAGE Therapy. There’s always something to learn from other members – new recipes or low-Syn foods – and the focus is firmly on looking ahead. “Food Optimising has never felt like a diet – it isn’t restrictive at all. There’s always something I can have when I’m out and about, like a Subway Turkey Breast & Ham Salad without dressing (brilliant, as it’s Free on Extra Easy), and it’s easy to adapt my favourite recipes. I used to crave a takeaway kebab; now I love dipping Slimming World chips in Free home-made houmous or tzatziki, or enjoying marinated skinless chicken or lean lamb and loads of salad. I’ve always enjoyed cooking and experimenting in the kitchen and was so excited
because I know the ingredients will be fresh and healthy, plus they’re cheaper. Just because you slim down the fat and cream doesn’t mean losing the flavour, I just love the creamy chicken korma recipe. My partner Stuart is one of the fussiest eaters I know and he can’t tell the difference between my curry and a high-Syn one! “I’m a big Body Magic fan, too. The buzz I get from being stronger, fitter and healthier is fantastic. My anxiety and depression have disappeared, along with my achey joints. And I’ve even discovered that I love running! I couldn’t jog across the park when I first joined group. I’ve set myself the target of taking part in a different fitness challenge every month for a year and I recently ran my first half marathon. I’ve been on a cycling holiday, tried open-water swimming and now I’m thinking of entering a triathlon. I feel like a completely new person.
toring every mouthful – it’s so liberating! It’s simply losing weight with NO hunger EVER!’ Sinead also says, ‘Success isn’t achieved by setting impossible standards or through humiliation, it’s achieved through caring, compassion and respect for you. You decide what size you want to be and we’ll help you get there, where you want to be. At Slimming World we work together to help you look and feel great – body, mind and soul”.
Taste the difference… Never go hungry again! Our Free Food list includes masses of food that you can eat in unlimited amounts. Eat as much as you want, when you want! No food is banned! Enjoy your favourite treats every day and still lose weight. We’ll support you every step of the way – in group and online where our Consultants and your fellow members want you to succeed just as much as you do!

Helen is set to share her slimming secrets A slimmer who transformed her life is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives for the better too. Helen Gallagher well known for supporting the local people of Strabane and surrounding areas in the 70’s and 80’s when she worked in the Strabane brue on Urney Road. Helen joined her local Slimming World group in Sion Mills and with the help of the Consultant Sinead she achieved her Target weight and had maintained it for over 6 years. Then to her surprise she started to gain some pounds and after a visit to the doctor he diagnosed her with an under-active thyroid. Helen went back to S.W and the extra pounds soon disappeared. Helen has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club and she opened her 1st group in September 2013 and has enjoyed 20 months running 3 busy groups every week.
Strabane She was delighted 6 weeks ago to be offered to transfer her S.W business to Strabane. Members at the group are getting ready to welcome Helen as their new Consultant when she takes over the Strabane Cricket Club group
on Monday 22nd June and also the Artigarvan group on Wednesday 24th June. With the latest government figures revealing that every year higher % of people of Northern Ireland are either overweight or obese.Helen says her new role has never been more important. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself.
Lifestyle change “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle like finding ways to become more active even if you’re not very mobile or don’t like exercise. My weight loss has completely changed my life.” “On top of that, I’ve got a new career. It’s well-paid and the hours fit around my family, but best of all I’m doing something that I’m passionate about. As a slimmer myself I know how hard it can be and I couldn’t have lost my extra weight without my Consultant and my group. Sharing recipes and other ideas, and overcoming disappointments as well as celebrating success was all part of the journey, so there’ll be lots of support, encouragement and fun at my Slimming World group.” Helen’s Slimming World group will be held at Strabane Cricket Club every Monday at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5 pm & 7pm from 22nd June and in The Artigarvan Primary School every Wednesday at 5.30pm & 7.30pm from 24th June. For more information or to join Helen’s group either pop along or call her on 07730 768 080 Or: For more information visit or call 0844 897 8000.

TotalMusic The Script headline Tennent’s Vital 2015 Tennent’s Lager and MCD have announced that The Script will headline this year’s Tennent’s Vital on bank holiday weekend Sunday, August 30. They’ll be joined by Kodaline, Annie Mac, Clean Bandit and Jack Savoretti, completing the bill for Tennent’s Vital 2015. With some of the world’s biggest stars and breakthrough talent heading to Boucher Road Playing Fields, Tennent’s Vital fans are in for an unforgettable night of music over the August bank holiday weekend. Since Dublin three-piece The Script hit the number one spot with their self-titled debut album in 2008, they’ve gone from strength to strength, selling out stadiums across the world. Their 2012 smash hit Hall Of Fame took them to stratospheric levels of global stardom, with record sales in excess of 20 million, achieving multi-platinum status around the world. Their fourth album, No Sound Without Silence, is the sound of a band firing on all cylinders and channeling the momentum of their last, rocket-powered campaign. The band’s June show in Dublin’s Croke Park sold out in less than 3 hours, making them only the third Irish artist ever to sell out the 80,000 capacity venue. The band
at Boucher Road Playing Fields with her dazzling selection of the best new dance music. Also joining the Tennent’s Vital bill are Clean Bandit, the Grammy award winning British electronic group whose single Rather Be from their debut album ended 2014 as the year’s best-selling song in the UK, second only to Pharrell William’s Happy, selling over 1.1 million copies. Rather Be entered the Billboard Top 100 at number 10, giving the band their first US Top Ten single. With their unique blend of classical and dance music, and the chart-topping hits to back it up, the band are sure to entertain the Tennent’s Vital crowd on Sunday, August 30.
bring their hit-filled catalogue to Boucher Road Playing Fields this August. Kodaline’s musical journey began just a few years ago yet the Irish rockers have already amassed a BBC Sound of nomination alongside countless of their tracks featuring in hit films and TV shows, including Catfish, Grey’s Anatomy and The Fault in Our Stars to name but a few. Their debut album In a Perfect World sold over 350,000 copies and their most recent release, Coming Up For Air, partially recorded in LA with producer extraordinaire Jacknife Lee (Snow Patrol, R.E.M.,
Taylor Swift), is on its way to propelling the band to even higher heights. Having recently landed the job as the new presenter of Radio One’s evening new music show, Annie Mac’s career is going from strength to strength. Over the past year alone her popularity as a DJ has led to festival appearances, a coveted DJ set alongside Fatboy Slim at the Amex Stadium, a whirlwind tour of Australia and a nationally broadcast midnight DJ set for Channel 4’s New Year’s Eve ‘House Party’. Radio 1’s queen of dance music will definitely get the party started
All Roads Lead To Stendhal Donovan
One of the local summer festival highlights of recent years, the Stendhal Festival of Art, will celebrate its fifth anniversary at Ballymully Cottage Farm, Limavady, on August 7 and 8. Since its inception in 2011 the all-encompassing music and arts extravaganza has slowly but surely filled the hole left by the Glasgowbury festival, which waved farewell in style two years ago. In 2014, the event enjoyed its most successful year to date as over 4,000 visitors revelled in all that was on offer, including Frightened Rabbit, Paddy Casey and The Undertones, to name the smallest of slices of the Stendhal pie. This year, the Stendhal Festival of Art has a major coup: Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee, Donovan, will be the Friday Night headline act! The legendary folk-rockpop troubadour’s career has spanned 50 years, 27
albums and has produced some of the most highly regarded and memorable songs in the history of music. ‘Sunshine Superman’, ‘Catch The Wind’ and of course ‘Mellow Yellow’ all beautifully captured the spirit of the times in which they were written but have endured through to this day as a result of the timeless qualities Donovan brings to his music. Donovan entered the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and Stendhal Festival of Art is honoured to be welcoming him to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the award winning festival. Stendhal has also revealed 25 more artists who will be taking to the stage this year including; Kilkenny grunge rockers Kerbdog, hip-hop DJ extraordinaire DJ Format, Contemporary Irish Trad trailblazers Kila, electro-dance, nu-disco duo Televisor and 2014 Northern Irish album of the year winner Robyn G Shiels. Strabane will have solid representation at the festival, also. Both Freak’s and solo singer-
English singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti’s career spans almost 10 years, from his time as a successful touring independent artist to the recent release of his 4th album, his first to be released by a major label, BMG Chrysalis, with whom he signed in 2014. With the album entering the official UK Album Chart in the Top 20 and a sold out UK and Ireland headline tour under his belt, culminating in a sold-out show at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire which was given a four star review by The Independent, Jack brings his poetic charm to Belfast’s Boucher Road Playing Fields when he plays Tennent’s Vital this August bank holiday weekend.
The Stenhal Festival of Art Ballymully Cottage Farm, Limavady August 7 | August 8 2015 songwriter, Lauren Bird, will take to the stage over the weekend. The Stendhal Festival of Art 2015 music line-up so far features: Donovan; Kerbdog; DJ Format; KILA (Dublin); Go Wolf (Belfast); Televisor (London – Amsterdam); Ciaran Lavery (Tullygally Armagh); Teyr (London); Sullivan & Gold (Co. Derry/Londonderry); Ryan Vail (DerryLondonderry); Jason Clarke – (Belfast); Join me in the Pines (ROI); Oh Volcano (Maghera – Belfast); Hannah McPhillimy (Coleraine); Hurdles – (Belfast); CM88 (Limavady); Emma Lusby (Limavady); Ryan McMullan (Portaferry – Belfast); Freak’s (Strabane); Katharine Philippa (Belfast); Marty O’Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra (USA); The Bonnevilles (Lurgan – Banbridge); Rosborough (Derry/ Londonderry); Robyn G Shiels (Garvagh – Belfast); LORE (Dungiven – Limavady); Lauren Bird (Strabane). Weather has been beautiful over the last few days and it is just great to see so many people outside enjoying the sunshine.
It is also really good that many people are taking advantage of the good weather and going for leisurely walks. When I go for a walk in the early mornings these days I meet lots of other people doing the same and the evenings are filled with ramblers too. It is wonderful to see people of all ages look after themselves in this way and the purpose of this article is to show how you can get the best out of your leisurely walk. Walking is good for you however in order to make the most of the exercise health wise I have found observing a few ground rules can make it a great work out for ever cell in your body as well as a leisurely walk. Done correctly walking is a great stress reliever, mood changer, cell oxygenator, and an active meditation. Before you go on your walk check if your nose is blocked. If so, breathe in through the nose, out through the nose, hold your nose and hold your breath whilst walking for as many steps as you can and then let go of the nose and resume breathing only in and out through the nose. Repeat this exercise until the nose is clear. Whilst walking it is essential to keep your mouth closed and breathe only in and out through the nose. Let you nasal parameters dictate the pace. If you cannot walk with mouth closed initially, slow the pace down until you can. This can take some practice however it is well worth mastering. Remember the nose is a very efficient filter so why would we bypass the filter when walking. It also warms/cools and moistens the air before it enters our lungs. Years ago I was taught the best way to breathe is in through the nose and out through the mouth, however breathing out through the mouth can cause us to dehydrate more quickly therefore
breathing in and out through the nose is best. As you get better at walking with mouth closed it becomes very easy and it is time to challenge yourself a little more. Start with increasing the pace to the point where it is a bit of a challenge to keep your mouth closed at that pace. Never force this, take your time and soon you will be able walk at a very fast pace with mouth closed. When this happens you can decide to jog for a little distance or simply breathe in through the nose, out through the nose, hold the breath on the out breath for a few steps and then recover breathing in and out through the nose. As you practice this you can increase the amount of steps whilst holding the breath accordingly.
Active meditation
as an active meditation. I also find this exercise a healthy substitute for wearing headphones and listening to music whilst walking or running. It is also much safer as you can hear thing that are happening around you if necessary in case you have to jump out of the way of something coming your way. When wearing headphones this can be an issue. This exercise also keeps you in the now and you will find it very difficult to think/worry about anything other than when the next breath is coming or how many steps can I do during a breath hold. Research has shown that walking this way relaxes us more and always remember to look at the tree tops rather than the ground. When we look down we can feel down. Things are looking up. Have a go and enjoy your walking even more.

Huge turnout for Gemma’s Memorial 5k On a grey damp evening the atmosphere was poignant as the purple and pink balloons were set free to mark the start of Gemma’s memorial 5k in Aghyaran.
Finn Valley Athletes were to the fore among the serious competitors in the race and Gerard Gallagher led the field home against the wind in 15.59. He had 15 seconds on his closest rival Martin Cox Project Africa who ran 16.14. It was nice to see Gerard getting a win on the home front as Martin had beaten him to second place by 12 seconds the previous week in the Balyshannon 5k. Dermot McElchar (Finn Valley) was 3rd in 17.25. In the ladies race it was a win for Eimear McDermott (Finn Valley) in 21.13. Her coach Mark was delighted as she only began running seriously two years ago. Charmian O’Brien (Finn Valley) was 2nd in 21.53. Stacey Dolan was 3rd in 21.54. As she went up to get her prize Mark said “you may be wearing a black top now but you’ll be wearing a blue and white one for the next race!” John McElhill (Finn Valley) won the 40+ cat in 18.13 and Carmel McBride (Finn Valley) won the 40+ cat in 22.04. Jacob Britton Pettigo won the Under 16 in 17.57 and Aiobheann McHugh won the Under 16 girls in 23.55.
By Gloria Donaghey The third running of the event took place a few days before her 3rd anniversary on 17th of May. There was a tear in her mother’s eye and a heaviness of grief in her shoulders but an amazing sense of pride as Mark announced that £13,000 had been raised for cancer charities before the entry fees were even counted. The balloons floated off in to the air but one purple one stuck in the tree overhead and nodded it’s head as the 536 runners and walkers waited for the starting gun. A wee sign maybe that Gemma was proud of the positive way her family have dealt with a terrible tragedy and raised so much money for charity since her untimely death at the age of 20. Two years ago they raised over £7000 for the Coombe hospital in Dublin where Gemma’s sister Joanne gave birth to twins 9 weeks prematurely 9 months after Gemma’s death. Last year they raised over £10,000 for the Brain unit in Musgrave hospital.

Are you a true descendant of the Farrells? There are a significant number of Farrells living in northwest Ulster, including the Strabane area, today.
Most assume that their ancestors must have migrated directly from Longford, the historic homeland of the Farrells in Ireland from at least 1087, to this area over the centuries. However, for the vast majority of Farrells in northwest Ulster this is incorrect. Some are descended from local men named Fearghal (Ó Fearghail), some from an anglicised version of Ó Firghil, and a few from individuals who have more recently migrated from elsewhere in Ireland. The majority of Farrells in Donegal, northwest Tyrone, west Derry and north and east Fermanagh owe their origins to the Ulster Plantation of the early 1600s, with most, if not all, coming from Scotland. The names of many of these early settlers are known. For example, George Farrell (a ship’s captain, merchant, and eventually a sheriff of Derry, living at Strabane around 1613-40); James Farrell (merchant, living at Strabane around 1622-30); William Farrell Esq. (leaseholder of 1500 acres near Letterkenny in 1630); Thomas and John Farrell (tenants at Stranorlar in 1632/3), David Farrell (tenant at Lough Eske in 1641), Hellen Ferrill (widow of George Ferrill at Strabane in 1689), are just a few. Although these Farrells were part of the settler community, it would be wrong to assume that they were all Protestants. James Farrell of Strabane was a Catholic who had been excommunicated from the Church of Scotland in the early 1620s, and had fled along with many of his co-religionists to Strabane under the protection of the powerful Scottish family, the Hamiltons of Abercorn. The hunt is on to pinpoint the origin of the Farrells/ Ferrells in Scotland, and to trace their modern day descendants there. It is even possible that these Farrells were part of an earlier migration from Longford in Ireland to Scotland during the 1500s. In fact some Longford O’Farrells fought in Henry VIII’s army against the Scots in 1544. Tracing the Farrells in Scotland during the 1500s and early 1600s is very difficult because the spelling of surnames was not standardised at that time. Thus Farrell/Ferrell was
variously recorded as Pharare, Farrar, Farwell, Farry, Farnish, Farris, Farrett, Forrett, Forrell, and other similar variants depending upon the whim of the scribe. So it is not just as simple as matching present day surnames in Ireland and Scotland. This is where DNA science, supported by traditional historical research may provide the critical breakthrough. Dr Sam Hanna, who is undertaking this research, is optimistic that Farrells in the northwest will be interested in their history, and he would be delighted if they would contact him for further information and discussion. The research will be included in Hanna’s book which is based in the Donegal/Tyrone/ Fermanagh/Derry region. Many of the descendants of the Scottish Farrell settlers eventually migrated to America in the mid-1700s and their descendants can be found in, for example, Virginia and Kentucky today. So there is an exciting family history connection spanning Scotland, Ireland and America, and it would be fantastic to unite this family again across over 500 years of history. It would certainly be a welcome boost for the local economy to host Farrell visitors and their relatives from elsewhere in Ireland, Scotland, America, Australia and New Zealand. If any readers feel that they may have a connection to the Farrells then please contact Dr Sam Hanna at email address: samhanna1@btinternet.com or phone: 07595289306. Any subsequent DNA testing may be undertaken by the leading genetic genealogy company, www.FamilyTreeDNA. The Farrell DNA Project with FamilyTreeDNA is administered by Dr Maurice Gleeson. He has identified different Farrell genetic families from the Farrell DNA database. There is also an active Farrell Clan Facebook page where Farrells from all over the world are in contact.

By Paul Gallagher
As another football season has ended, the competitive game has waved goodbye to a number of iconic figures who have coloured the sport for over a decade. Strabane’s Paul Gallagher, currently living and coaching soccer in North Carolina, takes a look at three of them, paying homage to one in particular. The end of an era. The 2015 season should be, and hopefully will be remembered for one thing only: the end of some of the greatest careers we have seen in modern day football. Now, I know some of them are continuing to play in other leagues but for me it feels as if they are retiring. When I say ‘they’ I am referring to three very special players in particular and funnily enough all were midfield maestros who played the position very differently.
Xavi I’ll start with the Spanish and Barca legend, Xavier Hernandez (better known as Xavi), who has bossed international and club football for what seems like an eternity. He got his chance as a sub way back in 1998 during pre-season against, wait for it, Southampton and since then he hasn’t looked back. He has won just about every accolade for club and country imaginable and has been a major player in the new generation of tiki taka football. Not only has he played on great teams with great players but many of these players have hailed him as the driving force behind many of those international and club campaigns.
Lampard The next of this great generation of midfielders to call it a day is the all-time leading goal scorer for Chelsea FC, Frank Lampard. Not an overly athletic or technical player but a player who has managed
to be at the top of the Premier League for over a decade. Year in year out, Lampard has been one of the best scoring midfielders in the premiership and worldwide. For me he was never a playmaker type but if you needed a goal then he was your man. One fact about Lampard that you may or may not have known is that in 2005, maybe one of his best seasons, he finished second in the Balon D’or race to none other than Ronaldinho. Not a bad player to lose to. But as the old cliche goes I left the best Xavi Frank Lampard to last. on the Premier League trophy. (Sorry Liverpool fans I had to say it!) However, I think that in part is Stevie G why I would say he is the best. Yes, he has played As a United fan it pains me to say this but in my with good players but none of his Liverpool teams opinion Steven Gerrard is the best midfielder that were on par with the other teams of the decade. the Premier League has seen in the past 15 years The fact Liverpool were even in contention was all and has to be discussed as the best in the world down to Stevie G as he simply willed those teams during that time. The man had it all. He could ping to win and to be somewhat relevant. a ball 40 yards without breaking a sweat, make a last ditch sliding tackle to save his team and score The biggest example of this is the unforgettable a match winner from 25 yards out without batting night in Istanbul. Anyone who watched the game an eyelid. Viera, Keane, Scholes, and Lampard on TV or in person knows at half time nobody have all left their mark on the Premier League but and I mean nobody gave that team a chance. They were playing against an AC Milan team who was none have done it like Stevie G. stacked with world class players such as Maldini The funny and somewhat ironic thing is that one and Kaka.
Steven Gerrard
And barring a few games that I have seen Messi do it (greatest player of all time but we’ll leave that for another day) I personally haven’t witnessed another game where a player has put the team on his back and carried them to the finish line. I mean the man did absolutely everything and without him AC Milan probably would have won the game 5-0. When you see a performance like that it changes how you see a player. I’m sure he had played well before that but it was that game that sealed his fate of being one of the best to ever grace the game. We may never see another generation of midfielders like the one coming to an end so I for one am thankful for being able to witness it. Thank you fellas for memorising us for all these years and hopefully some of you will make better pundits mark they all have left that he hasn’t is their name But there was one man who knew they could win. than Michael Owen!
