Little Tilly’s father, Finn, posted a message on the Justgiving page to thank everyone for their support. He said, “Lindsay and I have been overwhelmed by your response to the appeal for our wee Tilly and those who support her. We have been shocked by the outpouring of goodwill and generosity towards our little lady and thank you all immensely. We wish you could all see Tilly in the flesh (her pictures do not do her justice, biased daddy opinion of course) as her mischievous big smile has the doctors and nurses of Birmingham PICU fighting for her attention. We have to give Tilly time in the ICU to grow and gain weight before her next open heart surgery. Hopefully then we can have her home and have some normality in her life. We thank you all again for your prayers and best wishes.”

She is now seven months old and has been in Birmingham Children’s Hospital since before Christmas where her parents Finn and Lindsay have remained constantly at her bedside. Unfortunately she is facing an even longer stay so the objective of the campaign is to enable Finn and Lindsay to remain in England so that they can provide Tilly with all the love and support she needs and also to raise some funds for the Children’s Heartbeat Trust. Martin Doran, who set up a Justgiving page for the campaign, explained, “Finn and Lindsay thought that they would be back after a few weeks but due to complications it looks like they are going to be in hospital for the next few months at least.”

2016 PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES NOW AVAILABLE
Sunglasses are as much for safety as style Sunglasses can give you instant Simon Cowel cool, Victoria Beckham glamour, or the rock star hipness of Bono. But they are much more than a fashion accessory. Sunglasses are an essential tool in safeguarding the health of your eyes and the surrounding tissue. UV radiation increases your odds of getting cataracts, which cloud the eye’s lens and lead to diminished eyesight. It has also been linked to macular degeneration, incurable disease of the macula, a part of the retina that is essential for sharp vision. Other UV-related eye problems are pterygium and pingueculum. A pterygium occurs when the conjunctiva, the tissue that lays over the white of the eye, grows into the cornea. A pingueculum is a yellowish bump of tissue on the white of the eye. As around 80% of damage from UV occurs before the age of 18 it’s important to get children used to wearing hats and sunglasses,
to protect their eyes. It is also important for children to have regular eye examinations throughout their lives. For children and adults who wear glasses, prescription sunglasses are available in a range of stylish designs. Costing from only £35 (€45) for children and £59.95 (€80) for adults complete with tinted prescription lenses, frame and UV protection.

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Much More Than A Courtroom Drama BBC2 Monday nights 9pm | Catch up on BBC iPlayer For those of us that can remember watching it live on television, it’s hard to believe that it’s now over 26 years since the OJ Simpson trial. Viewers are currently reliving that period throughout the first series of American Crime Story, which goes under the subtitle The People Vs OJ Simpson.
head attorney. Dan Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter has criticized his performance as “a mesmerizingly bad performance from the eyebrows down.” Indeed, Travolta overstates and camps it up and it is certainly a marmite performance, with any positives certainly within the guilty pleasure category.
Based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book The Run of His Life: The People v. OJ Simpson, the ten part series focuses on the former professional football star and actor Simpson being tried on two counts of murder after the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and waiter Ronald Lyle Goldman, in June 1994. The plot synopsis for the most publicised criminal trial in American history will not be necessary here, and despite the viewer knowing exactly how this series will unravel it doesn’t alter the fact that this is addictive viewing. A number of factors exterior to the case and trial itself have taken on a strong precedence so far.
In many ways, the day Simpson sat in the back of a white Ford Bronco being driven by fellow footballer AC Cowlings, and led police on a low-speed chase along the Los Angeles highways is the day the reality television came to prominence. How ironic it was, then, that one of the most famous names in recent reality television was introduced to the world during The issue of race is a major factor through- the OJ Simpson trial: Kardashian. out, such as the initial public divide as regards Simpson’s guilt; African American perceptions In this series Simpson’s close friend and of Simpson’s fame and private life through- defence attorney Robert Kardashian, played out his career; how race became the primary by David Schwimmer, is confronted by a issue in shaping the jury for both the defence public and media that struggles to grasp and prosecution, and how Simpson was per- his surname - “who are you?” “You’re Robert Kardovian!” The trial makes him an overnight ceived by the media following his arrest.
Alongside Sarah Paulson, the standout performance, just as in the real trail itself, comes from Johnnie Cochran, played with great flamboyance by Courtney B. Vance. Vance celebrity and we even observe him preaching clearly relishes the role, savouring to his children about how fame is “fleeting”, every line and public address, bringwith one particular daughter not fully listening! ing Cochran’s verbosity and win at all costs mentality very much to the fore Marmite performance throughout. The series boasts a stellar cast. Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. has captured a Simpson that isn’t particularly bright. He is cowardly, fragile and vain in equal measure. Sarah Paulson is excellent as head prosecutor Marcia Clark, convincingly illustrating her almost feral desire to see Simpson found guilty, along with her vulnerability in dealing with such a high profile case and various levels of misogyny throughout. John Travolta portrays an almost cartoonish Robert Shapiro, Simpson’s initial
WT HIRE LTD
You know how this all ends, but still the underlying issues and themes of race, sexism, celebrity culture and the power of the media, along with some fantastic performances will keep the viewers gripped to the end. The People Vs OJ Simpson continues on BBC2 on Monday nights at 9pm and can be caught again on BBC iPlayer.

NWRC leads the way in Science Technology Engineering & Maths
North West Regional College Collects Top STEM Accolade North West Regional College continues to lead the way in the provision of first rate learning in the STEM area, following news it has received Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths – ‘STEM’ Assured status. STEM Assured, which was launched by the NEF – The Innovation Institute, in 2010, is the only standard that provides independent, industry-backed validation of the quality of an institution’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) provision. To achieve ‘STEM Assured’ status, education providers are assessed on their provision and benchmarked on their capabilities to design and deliver STEM courses that keep pace with emerging technology and the evolving needs of employers. North West Regional College succeeded meeting the following standards required to gain the status; consistent high quality STEM-based training aligned with current and anticipated industry requirements, a multi-disciplinary context to STEM education and learning to reflect real world scenarios and needs, employability and related transferrable skills embedded into the curriculum and reflected in the student journey, continual improvement and innovation of the STEM provision keeping pace with rapid advances in technology and the changing jobs market and clear engagement processes with industry, in particular local employers. Dr Terry McIvor, Curriculum Manager for Science and Mathematics at NWRC said, ‘STEM knowledge and skills is of growing importance for a variety of employees, not just those working in the fields of mathematics and science. ‘According to the U. S. Labour Department, listed amongst the 10 fastest growing occupations from 2008-2018 are; Biomedical engineers, Network systems and data communications analysts, Financial examiners, Medical scientists, Skin care specialists, Biochemists and biophysicists. All of which require a good grounding within STEM education.

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to 23 year old singer-songwriter, Gary Elliott. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Lisnafin Park.
Favourite food?
My favourite food has to be a good curry.
Something about Strabane that you miss?
Summer time messing about on the quads and getting covered in muck. And also skateboarding in the canal (that one day skatepark that came to the town before it closed).
Who or what makes you laugh?
That would be Linton and Robinson’s, especially the toy selection - ok now I sound like a kid haha.
An ideal night out?
Something you’d love to see happen locally in the future?
A Favourite holiday destination?
Going to hear a live band, having few predrinks with the mates first and staying until closing time and of course getting a Paolos pizza and then home.
A fond childhood memory?
Heading to Spain or “Fundoran” when the sun is actually out, as Ireland is the best place for any holiday on a sunny day.
A favourite film and why?
It has to be random internet memes about animals dogs or cats.
An ideal night in?
It would have to be The Lion King because of its music. I even have a small swallow birdie tattoo saying ‘circle of life’ haha. Another great film is The Lord Of The Rings.
Getting a takeaway, chilling and watching some 80s classic films such as The Breakfast Club or The Goonies.
Favourite kind of music?
It’s a small community and everyone knows everyone. It’s such a friendly little town. The local musicians from Strabane are also something to be very proud of.
My favourite kind of music would have to be old 50’s / 60’s rock n’ roll, especially The Beatles.
Something you love about Strabane?
Hopefully more shops and businesses opening in the town.
Someone who makes you proud to be from Strabane?
I’m proud of the fact that Paul Brady is from Strabane. He is a fantastic songwriter and his music has crossed the globe. He can even count Bob Dylan as a fan.
Would you like your son, daughter or friend to feature in ‘Closer to home?’ If so, email us at: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk

Supporting Our Community… As with previous years, Allstate Strabane and its employees again went above and beyond to show off how generous they are in 2015 raising over £8,000 for various local charities throughout the course of the year. While some exceptions were made for large worthwhile causes such as Nepal Earthquake which raised almost £350 in April, the main focus for the year was charities that make a difference to the local community. Wide-ranging causes from local hospitals to mental health charities to local favourite ‘Rainbow Rehoming’ which takes in animals that have been abandoned by their families, the main draw of the year was of course the annual Special Olympics in April when Allstate employees took to the streets of Strabane to raise £1,500 in aid of sending local athletes to the Special Olympics. Looking ahead to 2016, Allstate’s largest community involvement campaign ‘Bring Out the Good Month’ is scheduled for April. Allstate employees, including those in Strabane, will have the opportunity to either volunteer at an organization of their choice, or to donate to an organization of their choice through the Giving Campaign.

Laser Hair removal WHY LIVE WITH UNWANTED HAIR? Emma Heaney explains the difference between Laser Hair removal and IPL?
By Emma Heaney Aesthetic practitioner
Why live with unwanted hair? But how do you decide the correct treatment Laser Hair removal V’s. IPL?
licle, so avoid– anything where you pull the hair out from its root such as waxing, plucking and threading. Always shave before your laser treatment. It may sound backwards but trust me on this one. Laser hair removal is much less painful if you don’t have any long hairs. But you won’t need your razor for long... Once you’ve finished your course you can live hair-free with only the very occasional bit of maintenance,
Over recent years Laser hair removal has rapidly gained popularity, its growth is partly due to the current celeb culture with the like of Kim Kardashian, “Keeping up with the Kardashians” star revealing her definite obsession with laser hair removal and having hairless, flawless skin, Kim has had her face, hairline, arms, bikini line, legs and underarms treated. When she was on the Oprah show she claimed that “staying pretty and laser hair removal were intertwined.” Historically a Laser hair removal treatment was best suited for light skinned people, but now with advancing technology darker skin types and fairer hair colour can now be successfully treated. I am aware that many People don’t fully understand the difference between Laser Hair Removal and IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatments, there appears to be great confusion when choosing which treatment avenue to take
Is it Pain free? Waxing and electrolysis is painful, laser hair removal feels like you’re being flicked by a warm elastic band, the area can then feel warm and tingly for a few hours afterwards but it’s not painful .
How many laser treatments will I need? Because hair has different growth phases and the treatment only works in the active growth phase, several treatments are necessary to achieve a lasting result. The number of treatments required will depend upon the hair density, colour, skin type and treatment area, together with ethnic background and hormones. Typically 6 to 8 treatments are required for light skin and possibly 8 to 10 treatments with darker skin. I recommend one treatment every 4-6 weeks
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Versus Laser Hair Removal Both treatments have been available commercially since the mid 90’s. They involve producing light energy which is then absorbed into the dark pigment of the hair to ultimately cause damage to the hair follicle, disrupting the growth element of each follicle to reduce hair growth. However this is where the similarity ends.

Vital Gets Red Hot Tennent’s Vital returns to the Boucher Road Playing Fields in Belfast on Thursday, August 25 this summer. A badly kept secret was finally confirmed on March 4 when it was announced that the headliners will be Red Hot Chili Peppers joined by special guests, Fall Out Boy. The Chili Peppers are a massive draw for the organisers, having sold over 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs. They have six Grammy Awards to their credit, including ‘Best Rock Album’ for Stadium Arcadium, ‘Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group’ for Dani California, ‘Best Rock Song’ for Scar Tissue and ‘Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal’ for Give It Away. They’ve been around the block for a few decades now, creating a worldwide generation spanning fan base in the process. Famously, the band last played Belfast as part of the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2011 with a special performance in Ulster Hall, and their return to the north has been hotly anticipated ever since. Well, it’s no longer speculation; the Chili Peppers are coming! Chicago’s favourite rockers, Fall Out Boy, made it big on the international stage with a run of amazing albums. Infinity On High hit the No.1 album slot in 2007 and Save Rock And Roll took the slot again in 2013. American Beauty/American Psycho was their sixth studio album, spinning off three solid chart singles: Centuries, Uma Thurman, Irresistible (featuring Demi Lovato). The album also includes an alternate version of Immortals, the band’s RIAA Gold, UK No 1 single from the soundtrack of the record-setting Disney movie, Big Hero 6. Although the Illinois foursome - of Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Andy Hurley and Joe Trohman – have been making mega hits for 10 years, it wasn’t until November last year that they won their first American Music Award for favourite artist.
Brian Beattie, Marketing Director for Tennent’s NI, said, “It’s fantastic to be announcing we’ve secured The Chili Peppers to headline Tennent’s Vital 2016 – they’re undoubtedly one of the biggest bands in the world with a great reputation for their amazing live shows so we’re expecting big things! Fall Out Boy is a fabulous addition to the bill and we’re well into negotiations to secure still more big names to make this an amazing Summer of music in Belfast. “Tennent’s Vital has earned a unique place as a highlight of Northern Ireland’s music calendar and each year we have to up the ante by delivering top international plus fresh home-grown talent. You may feel that 2015 was, literally, a hard act to follow, but 2016 is already shaping up to be something special – all credit to our industry-leading partners at MCD! And there’s more to come, with further announcements due over coming months.” Last year’s Tennent’s Vital saw a top line-up including Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, The Script and Kodaline play to some 65,000 music fans at Boucher Road Playing Fields, and this year’s event is set once again bring some of the biggest musical acts on the planet to Belfast.

Bundoran’s Sea Sessions Return In June The first batch of acts have been announced for Sea Sessions, the summer music festival that’s held annually in Bundoran. Among the bands and artists playing from Friday, June 24 to Sunday June 26 are indie stalwarts Primal Scream, who have just released their eleventh studio album, ‘Chaosmosis’. Rapper Tinie Tempah is also on the bill, along with Sunset Sons, Bad Manners, DJ Yoda, DJ Hype & MC Daddy Earl and more, including a number of Irish acts. Primal Scream have been successfully fusing retro rock with dance music since the late 1980s. Their 1991 album ‘Screamadelica’ became one of the signature albums of the decade, defining the emerging dance culture and its fluid relationship with more seasoned genres. Ultimately, they are band of many faces and sounds; and with Bobby Gillespie still at the helm they have a bona fide rock star who is not afraid to push the envelope, court controversy and swim against the tide. Chris Martin he is not! Tinie Tempah has been a consistent presence in the Top 40 for six years now. In February 2010, he dropped his debut single “Pass Out” and topped the chart for two consecutive weeks. His success earned him a slot at Glastonbury where he shared the stage with rap mogul Snoop Dogg. His second single “Frisky” peaked at No. 2. Shortly after, he was brought around Europe by Rihanna for an extended leg of her tour. He continued to perform in a number of major events while
at the same time releasing single after single until his first major-label album “Disc-Overy” came out in October the same year. The album reached No. 1 on U.K. Albums chart and was nominated for MasterCard British Album of the Year at 2010 BRIT Awards. He was named Best Newcomer at 2010 MOBO Awards and the “Frisky” music video is honored as MOBO’s Best Video. He also got multiple nominations including MOBO’s British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Artist. British Ska icons Bad Manners have been entertaining their solid, loyal fanbase for 40 years now. At their peak they enjoyed chart success in the early 1980s alongside fellow Ska revival bands such as The Specials, Madness and The Selecter. Fronted by the inimitable Buster Bloodvessel, they have an endless stream of party stompers in their setlist, such as ‘Lip Up Fatty’, ‘Lorraine’ and, of course, the classic ‘Special Brew’. A party atmosphere is guaranteed.
Primal Scream to play Bundoran
Other acts on the bill include 99 Soul, Moreland & Arbuckle, Pleasure Beach, CC Brez, Ciaran Lavery, August Wells, Cut Once, Pierce Brothers, Bitch Falcon, Craig Gallagher and The Mushburgers. Sea Sessions has become one of Ireland’s most highly respected small festivals. It has sold out to capacity crowds each year and continues to grow in popularity. In 2015 the festival sold out almost two weeks in advance. Big names such as Paul Weller, Bastille, Seasick Steve, Example and The
Coronas to name but a few have all appeared at the festival. Situated right on beach in Bundoran - the capital of Irish Surfing – it is the only event in the country bringing together the unique lifestyle aspects of surfing, music, skating, BMX, beach sports and more, into a three day camping festival.Tickets are on sale now, and cost €99.90 for three days and €124.90 including four nights camping. Limited day tickets are also available from €47.50 and VIP upgrades from €50 extra.

This special Balor gig sees frontman Pat Gallagher joined by his old Goats Don’t Shave partners in crime. Easter Time? When I was young I used to hear older people saying ‘Easter is early this year’. Although I didn’t really understand at the time the question running around inside my head was who decides when Easter takes place year on year? Much later I got to know that Easter is held between 22st March and 25th April on the first Sunday after the full moon following the northern spring equinox. Now that is quite a complex way to arrive at a particular date I thought, so I decided to do a little more research as to how this came about. Apparently the question of Easter timing comes down to a matter of two calendars, namely the Egyptian and the Hebrew calendars. The Egyptian calendar was based on the movement of the sun and this notion was handed down through Roman and Christian cultures and became the modern standard. The Jewish, and incidentally, the Muslim calendars, however are based on the phases of the moon, and Easter is an attempt to bring the solar (adopted by Christianity) and lunar, (retained by the Jewish Faith), together.

The Bible tells us that Jesus was crucified on a Friday and rose on the third day which was a Sunday and that day was retained by Christians as a significant feast day and was called Easter Sunday. The Jews at the same time also celebrated the festival of Passover which was fixed by the full moon following the spring (vernal) equinox, when day and night are of equal length. The question now posed

was how could the authorities of the time make room for these two significant festivals on the calendar without one encroaching on the other? This proved to be a very tricky dilemma and made no easier by the fact the Western church does not use the actual, or astronomically correct date for the vernal equinox, but a fixed date (March 21). To further complicate things when the Church refers to the ‘full moon’ in these matters it does not mean the astronomical full moon but the “ecclesiastical moon,” which is based on tables created by the church. Such constructs allow the date of Easter to be calculated in advance rather than determined by actual astronomical observances, which are naturally less predictable.
mine (along with other fundamental Church issues) a workable date for Easter. They subsequently decided that Easter would be held on the Sunday after the first full moon of March, on or after the vernal equinox, which they fixed on 21 March with a reservation that should the equinox fall on the Sunday then Easter is delayed by a full week to the following Sunday. This meant that Passover could take place just before the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ although a further provision involving the Jewish leap year also allowed Easter to be celebrated the month before Passover on those rare occasions. Problem solved? Well not entirely. You see the Bishops calculations were a little out, as the spring equinox now happens on March 20 meaning their timetable did not perfectly align with the actual astronomical full moon. The two feasts, Passover and Easter can therefore actual clash on rare occasions. Apparently the last time this happened was in 1818 and the next time will be 2285. As my late mother (God rest her soul), would say, “Didn’t they do well”. Who can argue with that? Now just enjoy this moveable feast. Have a great Easter.
After several attempts to sort this out a group of Christian Bishops were called together by the Roman Emperor Constantine in AD 325 at Until the next time the First Council of Nicea and asked to deter- Tom Herron
