Cool Casual Wear for Men When it comes to fashion, men, just like women, should be aware that there are things that they should and should not do.
So here are a few top tips for summer for all the men out there: Shorts, sleeveless shirts and tee shirts can be a stylish ensemble. However, shorts should hit the knee and shirts look smart and of an appropriate fit. Socks and sandals are a definite no-no! Khaki is so last year and, most importantly, feeling confident and comfortable does not mean refusing to part with the summer wardrobe you have had since your college days! Take a tip from the ladies and embrace summer. At Cilento a vast array of casual wear, including key designer brands for men, combines cool with chic. Choose from among Gant, Hilfiger, Scotch & Soda, Ted Baker, Matinique, Camel, Florentino .... and many, many more. Check out www.cilentodesignerwear.com for details.
Polarized Sun specs: read this for a great offer! Not all sunglasses are the same some just make things darker however polarized lenses block virtually all glare. Polarizing lenses not only give protection against UV Light but also protection against glare caused by reflected light. Light is made up of waves traveling in different direction. Vertical light is useful to the human eye it helps us see however horizontal light simply creates glare. A large amount of light coming into the eye comes from polarized sunlight being reflected by smooth surfaces such as water, snow, ice, wet road surfaces, windshields, car bonnets etc. This causes glare and can reduce contrast. Polarized lenses does not let this horizontal light

In their first year Strabane AFC have emerged as winners of the under-18 Strabane District winners of the Midnight Football competition, and then went on to represent the region with style as they captured the national title for the same competition. But most pleasing of all for those involved with the side is the fact that the Brendan Keogh Cup rests in Strabane. The team comfortably won the Fermanagh & Western Division Three League at the first attempt, finishing six points ahead of all rivals. The success is a fitting reward for the extensive work put in by all involved with the club over the last year. Club secretary Marcel Griffin said winning the league and promotion was very satisfying.

Despite only being in existence for one year the club will proudly display three trophies at the celebration on 18th June.
“Everyone is over the moon, even the sponsors. People are surprised when they see the amount of work that we have put in and what we’re trying to do. That (winning the league) is what we set out to do, so it’s mission completed. We got knocked out of the Mulhern Cup by Strule United which was disappointing, but we just knew that we had to go for the league then. That was the priority.” He added: “So fingers crossed everyone involved will stay on board for next season. We’re already looking ahead to it.” The success of the club’s youth has also added to
the mood of optimism around Strabane soccer. The Midnight Soccer scheme is a novel idea where the tournament is played between 9pm and midnight on Friday nights, as a way of entertaining teenagers at the weekend. “It’s a good way to keep people off the streets at the weekend. They won the Strabane District, and then they went on to represent Strabane in the National finals down in Dundalk, and the boys won that as well. They’re very good young footballers and we hope they’ll stick at it with us.” At the awards night prizes will be handed out to the Player of the Year, Player’s Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and the Top Goalscorer, while entertainment will come from Tommy Strummer. The guest speaker on the night will be local soccer stalwart Aidan ‘Cookie’ Dunne. The Strabane Athletic Awards night will take place in Murphy’s on the Green on Saturday 18th June. Tickets priced at £15 include meal and entertainment on the night, and details on how to buy them are available at www.strabaneafc.com

From Nigeria to Kuwait via Mauritius and the vast Indian Ocean....and once again through the ‘High Risk Area’ Well ‘fortune favoured us all’ and the vessel safely transitted the ‘High Risk Piracy Area’ in the Indian Ocean, thanks to having ‘full’ security measures in place with vigilant officers and crew, a company that takes the safety and security of their own people very seriously and it must be said my mother ‘lighting’ those little candles at ‘Doonyloop’ chapel everyday for myself and my crew!
As I said, ‘I blew a sigh of relief’......thank the lord more like!!!! Bunkering operations ran smoothly taking just less than 24hrs...... and I managed to have a wee ‘chit-chat’ from the deck to the Bunker Barge Master - A Ukrainian Captain.....quite stocky, short with a belly ready to burst but still looked as if he could ‘bench’ 250!!........oh yeah, he didn’t smile very much either! So with ‘full bunkers’ on board off we sailed at full speed to Bonny Pilot Station less than 24hrs away, fortunately for us our ETA was delayed a day and we ended up loading in Nigeria on the 25th March for discharge Mina Al Ahmadi, Kuwait 21st April.......... which I might add surprised us all!!!! For me personally and I can safely say for the Chief as well, a long voyage at sea is right up our ‘alley’ but for the younger generation on board it’s quite ‘daunting’ knowing that they are going to be at sea for almost a month. Obviously this can play with their mind if they fail to keep themselves positive and occupied (jeeper’s imagine being a submariner in the ‘Dutch Navy’ and under the surface for 6 months with only being allowed 11 words once per month to communicate with family/loved ones once the antenna is released and the Captain hails ‘float the bowie’....now I don’t know about you guy’s but I’d be ‘hiking it’ ten to the dozen over the torpedoes and nuclear warheads to make sure I got to ‘the comms post’ and my 11 words in and transmitted!!!....jeeper’s can you imagine!!!), easier said than done I know but it’s what all of us signed up for and the career path we decided to take.........I’m actually grinning away to myself here for I too was once a young seafarer ‘many moons ago’ and let me tell you, it was by no means easy! (maybe sometime in the not to distant future I’ll share with you

the pain and anguish that he himself and his family were going through. His daughter was 25 years old and suffering from a very severe form of ‘anorexia’ and would rather die than eat!.......I then thought of my own little cousin at 12 years old up in the Royal in Belfast going through the same as Essam’s daughter which I told him about and he replied that he will remember her in his prayers!
Unfortunately some vessel’s (not our own) transiting the ‘IRTC’ and the ‘Gulf Of Aden’ were not as fortunate and ended up hijacked with all officers and crew taken captive to be held for ransom. We arrived at our R/V 30 miles off Gabon for STS (ship to ship) Operations 22nd March to load ‘full’ bunkers (fuel oil). The plan was to actually go into the inner anchorage in Gabon but pressure from Charterer’s for next loading Bonny took precedence. I ‘blew’ a sigh of relief for it would have been the vessel’s first call to Gabon and from the ‘Gabon Shipping Agent’ communication/ email I would have had ‘every man and his dog’ coming on board to inspect, check, verify, you name it, it was on the cards!....... jobs for the boys no doubt and most probably ‘anything else for us now Captain before we go’.
Captain’s
Essam tried many different specialists from many parts of the world and in particular New York in a desperate attempt to help her and was even turned away from a private hospital (which turned out to be Jewish), after paying a huge amount of money for her treatment, once they discovered where he was from and his religion descent........I guess I can safely say that it’s not only the Irish that suffer in this world because of who they are!!! (I’m sure the D-Boy would most certainly agree with me on that one!!!..... eh Damien?).......having said that ‘it only strengthens our resolve even more’....... 'Breathing a sigh of relief and happy I'm through the High-Risk Piracy Area'
all the day I took my first Command back in May 2010!). Nevertheless, it’s time like this where a Master does work for his money to maintain the moral, welfare and well-being of all on board, be it through simple social contact, caring for his men in respect of their safety and security both professionally and personally, positive work planning and teamwork and ensuring at all times that everyone ‘is kept in the loop’ as they say so they all know what’s happening on a daily basis with regard to ship, shore and home!!...... you know even saying good morning to someone can make their day!!...you should try it sometime!..... Well loading ran smoothly, was completed on time and as the vessel cleared the ‘Bonny River/Channel’ the engines were brought up to maximum revolutions (RPM) and off we sailed once again into the great ‘blue yonder’, our destination Kuwait via Capetown, the Indian Ocean, through the Straits of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf........ with a little stop off at Mauritius on the way to embark a certain ‘little queenie’ from Belleek!!!....yeep, can you believe it, a certain someone agreed to fly more than half way across the world and to the southern hemisphere to be with her Captain! I got a hand it to her, that takes courage!!! Melissa arrived on the 9th April and was met by the ‘Mauritus Shipping Agent’ Alain and his wife Marsay who, as per my instructions ensured that she was safely taken to her hotel and looked after. Barely able to contain my excitement the vessel arrived on schedule (10th April 1500hrs) and in no time at all she was stopped in the water just outside port limits awaiting the launch boat to come alongside with on-signing personnel (and of course Melissa). Alongside she came and within ten minutes everyone was on board and before I knew it ‘Basil’ my Deck Cadet was escorting Melissa to the starboard bridge-wing. Well ‘shiver’s
n milkshakes’.....phew-holy-phew!!!!....... she finally made it on board!!!....and with the biggest of hugs!!!.....well what happened next is for me not for you!!!....teeheee!!! With stores on board and our new joiners ‘signed-on’ we set sail yet ‘again’ gearing ourselves up for the transit of the ‘High Risk Piracy Area’, ‘hugging’ the Indian coastline and the Pakistan border before entering the Hormuz between Iran and Oman......oh yes, this is certainly going to be fun!!!....let’s hope because of our size, speed, freeboard and vigilant watchkeeping and security measures in place we will be able to deter the eager but ruthless ‘Somali Pirates’!!!! The transit was for want of a better word ‘safesailing’ with clear blue skies and summer hot temperatures well above 30 degree’s Celsius - cruise ship weather and of course enjoyed by a certain someone from Belleek on E-deck in her sunbed while the rest of us worked our backsides off sweating from head to toe!!!.....it’s a funny old thing...this love!!!......and work!!!....teehee!!! Into Hormuz at 17.5knots on the evening of the 19th April and came out unscathed (no suicide bombers on little boats from Iran!.... teeheee!!!) and just over 24hrs later we were anchored in the special anchorage just 21 miles from ‘Mina al Ahmadi LNG Terminal’ awaiting orders to proceed into discharge our gas (if any of you can work out why I’m transporting ‘Liquefied Natural Gas’ from Nigeria to Kuwait, a country that produces oil/gas then you are smarter than I thought!). After confirmation from ‘Mina Port Control’ we heaved anchor and proceeded to come alongside embarking our pilot just off the port. A lovely man by the way with over 25 years of experience in piloting Kuwait waters. His name was ‘Essam’ and I have to be honest both myself and Melissa ‘warmed’ to the man immediately and we both soon learned of the tragic circumstances surrounding his daughter and
We said our farewell’s to Essam exchanging contact numbers/address and before we knew it we where approaching the Hormuz once again only this time with an ‘American Aircraft Carrier’ on our starboard side to keep an eye on us......and let’s not forget the two F16’s fighter jets that broke company in the air with one of them flying right over the top of the starboard bridge-wing showing his armour on the underside of the aircraft......the Chief reckons he was just showing off on a Sunday afternoon, I have to agree with him but I also have to admit not many get the chance to see that in their lifetime....including a ‘stunned’ Melissa with goose pimples on her arms as the ‘roar’ of the fighter jet passed us by! I know, please don’t remind me!!....I to watched top-gun many years ago in Omagh, 14 of us actually taken up by Nicky Wolfe in his van.....I can assure you all now that when every one of us came out of the cinema we ‘all’ wanted to be ‘Tom Cruise’ and a jet fighter pilot!!!........it was short lived of course!!!.......but a poignant moment nonetheless!!!.... Next stop was Fujairah U.A.E.(United Arab Emirates) to anchor at ‘DELTA’ for stores and provisions. With stores on board we heaved up anchor just before sunset and zig-zagged our way through the multitude of ships already anchored around us..... within 30 minutes I had my clearing and called the ‘Chief’ to ‘wind her up’ to full and let’s get out of here. Well as most of you have already guessed yeep....back into the ‘High Risk Piracy Area’. We reached Mauritius on the 4th May safely and disembarked our 2nd Engineer Paul, Chief Cook David and OES Nigel.......and that guy’s is where my story stops.........just for now!!!....until you hear from me again or see me next month!!! TotalMusic Chipzel Bound For New York City
This is a special month for Strabane Chiptunes artist Niamh Houston, as she prepares to perform her most high profile show yet. The 19-year-old Strabane student, who goes under the name Chipzel, will be performing at the innovative Blip Festival in New York City on May 19 and it is hoped that it will be a significant step in a career that has already seen Niamh create waves in electronica circles across Europe thanks to her 2010 debut album ‘Disconnected’. Now entering its fifth year, Blip Festival showcases the best creations in art, music and culture using retro game and computer hardware for three days at Manhattan’s Eyebeam. With Chiptunes – which is focuses on sounds recreated by vintage computer systems – being the musical and artistic genre Niamh has embraced since 2008, her place on the bill is a testament to both her innovative vision and the global relevance of Chiptunes as growing genre. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ before departing for the ‘Big Apple’, Niamh explained that her excitement and nerves are in the midst of a pleasant power struggle at present. “I’m so excited about travelling to New York but I’m also incredibly anxious about the whole thing. I’ve performed in Europe a number of times but this is the first time I’ve played in the United States. When performing in places like Denmark I always had fellow artists along with me, whereas this time I’m travelling alone. It’s the great unknown in a way, but that’s part of the excitement. There are a lot of people within the Chiptunes movement I really admire who will be there, so I’m really looking forward to getting right into the middle of it all,” explained Niamh. Also in the pipeline during her stay will be a number a radio and television promotional slots and although she may be very busy during her stay, Niamh is hoping to soak up what she can of New York’s musical culture. “New York is a very special city with a rich musical history in places like Greenwich Village and it was the home of important live venues like CBGB’s, which is sadly no longer open. I’ll not be there long enough to savour too much but I do hope to check out some New York City fashion,” laughed Niamh. What is particularly exciting for Niamh is the opportunity of getting to rub shoulders with figures from the Chiptunes genre who have been making their mark for a considerable period now. “There are a lot of influential figures who will be there, like Bit Shifter and Nullsleep. These are individuals who have been developing their craft for almost twenty years now and have been a great influence on what I do. It’s reassuring to know that they are there because it shows that the Chiptunes community is growing and will continue to evolve. I’m looking forward to being inspired by what I see and hear and hopefully it may colour the sounds on my next album, which I hope to have out in 2012,” concluded Niamh. The Last Waltz of the Record Store? Saturday, April 16 turned out to be a day that reflected two very different aspects in the business of buying music in 2011. As many of us made our way to our nearest independent record store to celebrate Record Store Day we were greeted the very sad news that the iconic Good Vibrations record store in Belfast, run by the equally iconic Terri Hooley, was to pull the shutters down permanently. Good Vibrations first opened in 1977 on Great Victoria Street. Since then it has relocated several times around the city, having endured the full brunt of ‘the troubles’ and intimidation from various shady figures. Throughout all of this, Hooley remained defiant and continued to promote indigenous independent music. In the late 1970s the Good Vibrations shop was the epicentre of the fledgling punk scene in the north. The Good Vibrations record label was born out of this melting pot, with local bands like Stiff Little Fingers, The Outcasts, Rudi and, of course, The Undertones benefiting greatly. When the latter’s ‘Teenage Kicks’ single was released on the label Hooley brought it to the attention of the godfather of all that was musically relevant on the radio – legendary Radio One DJ, John Peel, who was so taken with the single and its genuine juvenile splendour that he played it twice in succession on air. The song would remain the DJ’s alltime favourite song, so much so that it was played at his funeral in 2004. His headstone even quotes the opening line of the song: ‘Teenage dreams so hard to beat!’ But maybe now, and to quote John Lennon, who Terri Hooley famously punched one hairy evening in the seventies: ‘the dream is over’. “Business is dead,” said Hooley last month when announcing his store’s impending closure. “When we re-
opened, the first three months were fantastic and then all you heard was recession, recession, recession. Our business has just died and died, it couldn’t get any worse at the moment.” Record storeowners are repeating these words across the country as they lose out in a battle against online shopping and illegal downloading. It would be futile to dismiss the benefits that the World Wide Web has brought to music. It has broadened people’s musical scope, opened musical doors in a way that was previously impossible, and yes, there is a great convenience in buying music through the click of a button. But should the record store become extinct because of this? The packed independent record stores on April 16 illustrated that there is still an appetite for buying music over the counter. There is still a desire to own something physical. There is still even a penchant for buying vinyl, a good 20 years after the format was given the last rites. But is there enough interest? Why would anyone feel compelled to venture into a record store in 2011 when they can get whatever they want online either legally or illegally? Well, the personal connection with the music has a lot to do with it. Would John Peel have had the same connection with ‘Teenage Kicks’ if his only option were to download it from iTunes and put it on his iPod?
Record Store clerks John Cusack and Jack Black sniff vinyl in the classic 2000 film ‘High Fidelity’. But are the days of the record store numbered?
Only he could’ve answered that question but there is no doubting that a big influence in all the music that shapes us is our sense of ownership of that music. Whether it’s a lyrical connection or a musical connection, the scene of the epiphany could always be identified because it had a physical form in a record, cassette or even a compact disc. Now that physicality is fading and all we have is your word for it. An album is now becoming ten or eleven ghosts, coming to you via cables, tubes and routers. It’s impersonal and lacks the seduction of the crackle of vinyl, the run of the grooves and the three minutes of magic that the needle glides over. Downloading culture has also called time on the record sleeve, where an image could intrigue and the linear notes guide to other wonderful adventures in hi-fi. Online music is a powerful tool and making it more accessible should be rightly celebrated. But who exactly are the people utilising its capabilities positively? Would that audience be an older audience? Perhaps, and there is no doubting that an increas-
ing number of teenagers think that all music should be free, if indeed they are listening at all. The impact, power and popularity of gaming culture in 2011 would suggest that ‘Generation X’ has become ‘Generation X-Box’. There are always exceptions to the rule. If you are one such exception, make your voice heard. Record stores cannot survive simply by being refuges for the romantic and nostalgic. It needs new blood to come into the stores, willing to be patronised, insulted and berated for their choice of music by over-weight guys in Metallica t-shirts behind the counter. Some part-time kid behind the counter at one of the big chains couldn’t care less what you buy. Yet in the independent record stores the purchasing of a record can spark a conversation on any number of topics and lead you down corridors previously unheard of. It’s basically yet another example of quality customer care at an independent store. Embrace and support it wherever it may be. You may say I’m a dreamer, a deluded romantic, and maybe I am but I’m surely not the only one.
Chloe’s Sound of the Summer As the good weather that Strabane people have become accustomed to every April and May smiled upon us once again this year, the radio airwaves have been striving to compliment this temporary time out from overcast predictability with some sun-stroked pop flavourings. One recent local offering has come from 15-year-old Strabane singersongwriter, Chloe Wilders. Her debut single, the self-penned ‘You Don’t Know Me’, has been enjoying significant airplay on stations such as Highland Radio and Downtown Radio. It is now hoped that the single will continue to grow in popularity throughout the summer. Music is in Strabane Grammar pupil Chloe’s blood, with her parents, Alan and Julie, well-established names in the live circuit as former members of The Rascals. Alan is also busy being one-half of the popular live act Mr Men and can also be found in the midst of a stunning guitar solo with classic rock outfit The Guvnors every Wednesday night in Dicey Rileys. With music being such a major factor with her parents, it was almost inevi-
table that Chloe would follow in their footsteps. “I come from a musical family so there’s always some sort of singing or guitar playing going on,” says Chloe. “My dad taught me how to play guitar and when I was 13 I wrote ‘You Don’t Know Me’, so finally getting the chance to record it two years on was a great feeling.” The single was recorded at Valley Studios in Ballybofey and mastered by Terry McGinty. The track was coproduced by Terry and Chloe’s father,
Alan. “Being in the studio was a fantastic experience,” explains Chloe. “Obviously my dad has a studio at home and I did have some experience of recording but there was something really professional about the set-up at Valley Studios. Some people can’t stand being in the studio for too long but I loved the whole experience and learned a great deal.” Chloe counts Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne and, most significantly, Pink among her major influences. “Pink writes her own songs and in doing
so has inspired me to do that same. I have the greatest respect for people who write their own material. I also like Taylor and Avril’s style but Pink would be the artist I admire the most for the way she has control over what she does,” explains Chloe. While she is pleased with the success of her debut single so far, Chloe is focused on the next step, which will include more recording, a performance in an ABBA tribute at the Alley Theatre and an appearance at Strabane Unplugged on June 6. “I will be joining Jim Devine, Rachel Crowe, pupils from St Columba’s PS, Clady, Killen PS, Sion Mills PS and St Mary’s PS, Cloughcor at the Alley Theatre on May 19 for a special tribute to ABBA, and all in aid of Foyle Hospice. After that, I will be playing at Strabane Unplugged in June 6, so I’m really excited about both events and looking forward to what the rest of the summer has in store,” says Chloe. ‘You Don’t Know Me’ is available for download on iTunes. Take a look at the man in the mirror ‘Everybody does the best they can with the resources they have at the time’. This is a statement I heard for the first time some years ago when I was training in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) with co-founder Dr Richard Bandler. It took me some time to accept that this is true however the fact is we do not actually know what is going through anyone’s head when they behave in a way that may seem unacceptable to the rest of us. We do not have to agree with what someone does or the way someone behaves, however I believe that it is necessary to at least to attempt to understand the reasons why they behaved the way they did. This statement was tested for me with the killing of Osama Bin Laden by navy seals in Pakistan last week. I am a firm believer in the rule of law and I do not believe that anyone is or should be above the law. Too often we have seen incidents which seem to indicate that there are certain individuals or groups above the law. The policy of bringing leaders to task for war crimes comes to mind. It seems that the victors in war do not commit war crimes. We may want to believe that this is true and that in war situations whatever happens is justified and for the greater good, however I believe dangerous precedents can be set when the rule of law seems to be manipulated to justify similar actions on one side and condemn them on the other. The fact is I was not there when Osama Bin Laden was killed though the conflicting reports of what actually happened can be seen as sloppy attempts politically to get the whole incident across to the world’s public in as good a light as possible. I do not agree with Bin Laden’s tactics and ideology however I also know that he was a product of the western society I live in. In other words

he was a product of our society and the policies he believed are supported by our western governments so perhaps society in general must have a look at itself and the reasons why anyone would deem it necessary to follow such ideologies, take such desperate measures to be heard, and choose the seemingly appalling lifestyle as billionaire Bin Laden. How long can we turn a blind eye to the appalling injustices that our society creates or pretend they don’t exist. If we push extreme thinking to the fringes and simply denounce the perpetrators as evil we just create resentment among them and the festering eventually comes to a head and eventually explodes. We all then suffer. I believe everyone needs a voice. Talking is better than fighting in my book. We cannot answer terrorism in any shape or form by doing the same thing except ‘under the rule of law’ as it were. Political correctness has gone a bit mad. Lets’ start doing the right thing rather than do what we think is going to get us elected at the next ballot. If we believe that everyone is entitled to a fair trial then let us make no exceptions. I was also challenged by the fact that ‘dissidents’ threw a military grade hand grenade at some policemen and children a few weeks ago. Thank God it did not explode and why would anyone feel the need to do such a thing? Let us ask ourselves another question, why on earth would our society feel the need to use our diminishing resources to create such a weapon in the first place? Let us talk and find out what the issues are and see if we can sort them out in a civilised way rather than waiting for the festering powder keg to explode with the loss of even more innocent lives. It is good to talk so let us start NOW. Thanks for your time, Tom Herron
Following the success of the first Strabane Ladies Midnight Walk in 2010, Foyle Hospice are delighted to announce that they will be holding their 2nd annual Midnight Walk in association with Eclipse Cinemas on Friday the 17th of June 2011. The ladies Midnight Walk is a fun way to support your local Hospice while having a great nights craic with your fellow ladies and keeping fit so why not encourage your family, friends and work colleagues to join you? Geraldine McElroy, Community Fundraiser for Tyrone, said “This is one of our hugely enjoyable events we hold to raise much needed funds. Last year’s Midnight Walk was a great success. The ladies of Strabane and its surrounding areas came out in huge numbers to support the Hospice and a fantastic night was had by all. Each participant will receive their own t-shirt, and will be given a specially crafted medal along with refreshments and a bacon bap at the finish line. Fancy dress is an option; you can dress up if you wish to get into the spirit of the event.” The walk is a 3.5 mile, fully marshalled walk and it will begin at midnight at Heaton’s car park, Railway Road, Strabane While registration is available on the night, we encourage everyone to submit their entry before the closing date so that you can be guaranteed your t-shirt. All entries received beforehand will be entered into a free draw for a beauty hamper. We look forward to what is sure to be an enjoyable night for all!” Entry forms are available from the Foyle Hospice Shop, 5a Church street, Strabane Tel (028) 71886241 or Lifford/Strabane Eclipse Cinema or Foyle Hospice Fundraising Centre, 61 Culmore Road Tel (028)71359888 or email Fundraising at fundraising@foylehospice.com.

Strabane Grammar School Pupils Success at Design For Sport Competition
Back in mid April, Year 9 pupils from Strabane Grammar School travelled to Belfast with Mr Birkett for the Celebration day of the Sentinus, ‘Design for Sport’ competition. Twelve schools from all round the province were selected to take part and the overall winner will represent northern Ireland in the UK heats in London. Each team travelled to the Ulster University at Jordanstown to be presented wit their design brief. They had to design a sports facility for their school, town or country. They had to build a model of their design
and put together a presentation and a report in ten weeks. The Strabane Grammar Teams were supported by Damian O’Kane who acted as an engineering consultant. Strabane District Council’s Leisure and Culture officer, Karen McFarland gave them some good pointers too. Five Strabane Grammar teams started the project then the best was to represent the school in Belfast. The ‘Smarticle Particles’ chose to design an Aquatic Centre for the whole of the North of Ireland where an Olympic-sized swimming pool
could host international events. The team were very innovative, though. They decided to include all water sports so there was a wave pool in the building where people could learn to surf and a white-water river flowing down the sloping roof for white-water canoeing and rafting. The Aquatic centre would be positioned where the Mourne and Finn join to form the Foyle to take advantage of the water supply for the centre and provide opportunities for water sports on the rivers. As it was an aquatic centre they envisaged a wave-
shape for the building and it would have a restaurant on top shaped like a boat cresting the wave. The sloping roof would be a green roof. As well as a river, and restaurant it would have living gardens and walkways. The competition was fierce but the Strabane Grammar Girls did very well. They just missed the overall award and the award for most innovative idea but they were awarded the prize for best teamwork.

ABBAtastic and the Black Eyed Peaz to perform in Clady! This Friday night, 27th May, Abbatastic will be appearing at the continuing successful series of monthly cabaret /dance nights in the Smugglers Inn, Urney Road, Clady, Co Tyrone. Abba fans better have those flares washed, that cat suit pressed and shower yourself with glitter because it’s time to take a trip back in time, to the glory days of the seventies. ABBAtastic, one of the best ABBA tribute bands ever, will be bringing the sound of the seventies back from the past, and delivering it for a new generation. The music created by Agnetha, Freda, Bjorn and Benny influenced a generation and established a cult following for the band throughout the world. ABBA will never tour again, but the band is alive once more and sounding as good as they ever did
in the form of ABBAtastic The Show. Through careful research and rehearsal, ABBAtastic have faithfully reproduced the ABBA sound so well that it is a jaw-dropping experience. With the look, costume changes, Swedish accents and a cheeky sense of humour, the show is a theatrical experience which is sure to take you back to the 70’s, singing all those songs word for word. The band also includes 60 minutes of modern chart songs in their music programme to cater for all age groups. Forthcoming attraction on Friday night 10th June is the fabulous Black Eyed Peaz direct from Bristol U.K. Tickets are now on sale at the bar and it is advisable to contact early as numbers will be strictly limited.

Glenelly GFC ‘Take Me Out’ fun at the Fir Trees this Friday night Television game-show sensation ‘Take Me Out’ will enjoy a local incarnation at the weekend as the Fir Trees Hotel hosts a version of the hit programme, organised by Glenelly GFC. Sean O’Kane, Strabane’s answer to Paddy McGuinness, will direct affairs on Friday night (27th May) as five of the most eligible bachelors in the north-west try attempt to choose between 15
fair cailíns for the opportunity of romance, or at the very least a free meal. The fun begins at 9pm as the five charmers strut their stuff and attempt to keep as many of the girls’ lights on as possible. The contestants will also, of course, have to perform a party piece as per the TV show. It’s not Fernando’s but a three-course meal at the Fir Trees awaits the lucky couples who make it through the elimination process.
Garry McGlinchey is one of the event organisers and he told The Strabane Herald that punters could forward to hugely enjoyable night: “It promises to be a great night’s craic for everyone involved. We’re keeping the contestants under wraps for now because we want an element of surprise on the night, but you can be sure there’ll be plenty of familiar faces taking part.” He added: “It’s something different from your usual Friday night out so I would encourage eve-
ryone to come along and join in. Everyone knows and loves the TV show and its fantastic entertainment, so we know the format is right to create plenty of laughs for a local audience. There’ll be a few surprises thrown in too.” A disco is organised for afterwards, with the fun expected to continue long into the night. Tickets for the event are available for £10 in shops in Plumbridge, as well as McCauley’s shop in Strabane, and from the Fir Trees Hotel.

In the Hot-Seat with Brigid McGettigan eBay business anyone? Brigid McGettigan plays an active role in many aspects of Strabane’s community life. An expert ‘silver surfer’, she is chairperson of the Strabane branch of U3A (university of the third age). I was born in…Belfast, but we moved back here when I was three years old, so I was brought-up in the Burndennett area. I now live…in Ashbrook, Strabane, opposite the Orchard Road Industrial Estate. I was educated at…The Convent of Mercy, Primary school, and the Technical College, Derry Road, Strabane My earliest memory is…wanting to go to school but not being allowed, because I was too young. When I was a child I wanted to be…a P.E. Teacher I actually became…A factory worker, then an accounts clerk, and at the moment I am chairman of the local branch of the U3A (university of the third age), which is a self help group for older people, with a view to life long learning.

Local entrepreneurs are being encouraged to get on board with the latest internet initiative from Strabane District Council. By Kevin McAnena
The worst job I’ve ever had is… Student nurse, I never wanted to be a nurse The best job I’ve ever had is…teaching aerobics or basic computers. I’m very good at…organising I’m very bad at…housework, in fact I hate it. I like to relax by…reading a good book, or surfing the net. My favourite movie is…Gone with the Wind. My favourite band is…Glen Miller. The place I want to visit before I die is…Rome.
The last text message I received was…this one I am answering. If I was a politician I would…. raise state pensions and abolish tax on pensioners who have worked all their lives and paid their tax. If I won the lottery I would…travel the world. If I could invite five people, living or dead to a dinner party, they would be....Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Liz Taylor and Doris Day. If I could change one thing about the north-west it would be...Sectarianism My favourite thing about the northwest is…the People.
The council has been running a series of courses on how to make the most out of internet selling, and are keen to run more if there is enough interest. The course, which is taken by eBay guru Michael Hughes and is free, has already proven a hit with locals and all classes so far have been oversubscribed. It’s hoped that with enough interest, extra classes can be added to accommodate those who have missed out so far. Speaking to The Strabane Herald, Michael said it was a fantastic opportunity to make money, and opens up a new market which would not otherwise be available to people in Strabane. He called on locals to get in touch if they want to learn more. “They’ve all been oversubscribed so far but we still want people to contact us because if there is sufficient interest in it then it may be possible to run more,” he said. “It’s designed mainly for people who are thinking of running a business on eBay or who are already selling on eBay. We teach them how to prepare an item for listing on eBay; how to get maximum visibility; how to improve their chances of selling internation-
ally; how to research their competition internationally; how to deal with questions and queries; how to get paid; and the after sale service. It’s all the basics you would need to set up a business on eBay. There are now businesses in Northern Ireland turning over more than a million a year on eBay, so it’s not just a car boot sale.” A two-day course in Strabane earlier this month attracted extremely positive feedback, and two more classes are set for Donemana on the 8th and 9th of June. It follows on the success of pilot projects held in Strabane, Castlederg and Bready last year. Michael himself is a prime example of the money to be made online. He has sold over 30,000 items online and has his own eBay store, as well as a number of other businesses, and is the only Education Specialist in Ireland who was trained by eBay, as well as being the first person in these islands to be accorded its highest ranking of 5-Star Instructor. Michael commented that Strabane is ahead of the game so far: “Strabane District Council is actually way ahead of the field in respect to the eBay stuff compared to any other council in Northern Ireland. We’ve had a number of courses here and they’ve all been very successful. So the results have come from that – jobs have been created etc.” To express an interest in the course, contact Michael by email on michael@ irishartgroup.com, or by phone on 07879 445404.

5 facts about Acupuncture 1 Acupuncture started in China two thousand years
ago and it has propagated all over the world ever since then. A whole lot has accepted its relevance, not just for eastern traditional medicine, but also in the western world.
5 Since acupuncture theory believes in the concept of
being one, the patient’s body is believed to have different systems or parts but are mutually connected and they are not exclusive to each other. This belief emphasizes that once a part of the system malfunctions, the other parts also suffers.
2 It uses acupuncture needles as one of the many tools being used by an acupuncturist during treatments. A lot of people have preconceived notions when it comes to needles but these are extremely fine ones that less or no pain can be felt during the session.
3 Not only does it help to cure common sickness, some evidence even supports that this can be another option in healing serious medical conditions.
4 Acupuncture can also prevent an individual from
getting sick or acquiring diseases. This one is the advantage of acupuncture over those other medical healing methods.
“It is pretty well documented through scientific studies that Acupuncture can be very helpful in relieving things like migraines and other ailments”.
- President Barrack Obama
Testimonials SHOULDER AND ACUTE PAIN
‘For the past 2 weeks I had been in pain with aching shoulder. The pain was travelling down my left arm. It made even the simple task of brushing my hair extremely painful. After taking painkillers for 2 weeks I decided to try Dr. Shi’s Clinic in Strabane. After a few sessions my pain is gone and the herbs which the Chinese doctor gave me make me feel uplifted and more energetic. I would recommend it to anyone’ - Etta
NEURALGIA
‘I have been taking strong pain relief tablets, and have also been to the hospital. It was suggested to have an operation which would have left my face in numbness forever. Fortunately, this did not happen, as a friend suggested acupuncture and acupressure. I found it helpful. After 12 treatment sessions in Dr. Shi’s Strabane clinic, I was able to speak, eat and smile without my face going into a severe spasm of pain’ - Mrs. G. Hill
NERVIOUS DISORDER/ FATIGUE
‘I have been through chemotherapy 3 times and was feeling very fatigued and not sleeping well at night. After visiting Dr. Shi’s Clinic in Strabane I was treated on my immune system and my sleep by their amazing natural therapy. I can’t believe how well I am feeling and I am back to sleeping normal again. Thank you. Dr. Shi’
HABITUAL MISCARRAGE/ INFERTILITY
‘I have been married for over nine years, and always was dreaming to have a child— the outcome of our love. I tried many years and only got increasingly broken heart with three miscarriages. Last year, I decided to attend the Chinese medicine treatments at Dr. Shi’s Clinic. Three months later I was pregnant safely. I am so glad I now have a cute baby. Proud to be a new mum and a big thank you to Dr. Shi’s team’ - Teresa Lurgan

CHARITY SHOWS GRATITUDE FOR STRABANE EFFORTS Local fundraisers have helped raise almost £20,000 for a leading diabetes charity. The huge sum was gathered after a series of ‘Walk in the Park’ events, with Strabane’s version leading the way.
Christy’s Bar
The annual walk, which took place earlier this month (9th May), enjoyed fantastic support as the committed walkers had to battle through rain and thunder storms to complete the course. The money raised will go towards Diabetes UK Northern Ireland to help fund research into the illness, as well as offering information and support to locals affected by it. Naomi Brown, Fundraising Assistant for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, said: “I would like to thank everyone who came along to support the event and helped raise vital funds for Diabetes UK. I would also like to thank Strabane Voluntary Group who organised the event and put so much effort into making it a success.” It is estimated that 1860 people in the Strabane District Council area have diabetes. Overall in Northern Ireland, there are 70,000 people diagnosed with the condition, 1000 of which are young people and children. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 people in Northern Ireland have diabetes but do not yet know it as the symptoms are quite vague meaning people can go for up to ten years before being diagnosed. Symptoms include increased thirst, passing urine frequently, extreme tiredness, weight loss and blurred vision. Anyone experiencing symptoms who think they may have diabetes should visit their GP as soon as they can.

Meta’s a top winner and a top loser! Meta is a loser – and she couldn’t be more proud. Having lost a kidney at the age of 21 years old and only 28% of the other kidney remaining, Meta's ill health meant the weight crept on. At the end of 2008, Meta realised her size was affecting every aspect of her daily life. Now with the support of the Sion Mills Slimming World group, not only is she is an amazing 8 Stone lighter, she has just been awarded Sion Mills Slimming Club’s Greatest Loser 2011 title too! She says: "I’d often pretend to myself that I didn’t care I was so much bigger than other people, but that was far from the truth. As much as I tried to get on with things, being overweight affected every aspect of my life and I hated it." Meta's weight was also putting a huge strain on her health. She had suffered a slight stroke, high, blood pressure and high cholesterol. People who are severely overweight, with a BMI of 30+ are more likely to suffer from health problems like coronary heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and even cancer, and obesity is linked to a reduction in life expectancy of between seven and nine years. Meta says: "It’s one thing to eat unhealthily and not do enough exercise, but it’s another thing altogether to be putting your health at risk in this way, gambling with your life - really serious conditions like diabetes, stroke and heart disease. I didn’t want to put myself through that and I didn’t want to put my family through it either. I was slowly killing myself and I knew something had to change."
good to be true and at my first group meeting when Sinead said I could eat as many "Free Foods" as I wanted to satisfy my appetite - with no obsessive weighing or measuring - and I’d still lose weight I was thrilled. I was amazed when I came back the following week and I’d lost 6.5lbs after I’d eaten delicious meals of pasta, fish, lean mince, Quorn, vegetables, rice and potatoes and snacked on as much fruit and fat free yogurts as I wanted when I felt hungry. Each day I’d have a small chocolate bar or a couple of biscuits too. It was just the start I needed and I’ve never looked back."
Meta before weight loss
So, after reading an article in the paper how a local lady had lost a huge amount of weight at the Sion Mills Slimming World group, she decided to join the group which takes place at The Old School Hall. As I walked into the group I was warmly welcomed by the lovely consultant Sinead. She was more than helpful and very encouraging. Having lost 4 Stone on the plan herself, I knew I was in good hands. Meta says: "I had tried many diets before but nothing worked – I just couldn’t face a lifetime of feeling hungry, obsessively weighing and counting everything I ate or giving up my favourite foods. Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan was completely different. If I’m honest, at first I thought it sounded too

Now Meta has lost an amazing 8 Stone in total, and feels like a new woman. Shopping’s not a problem anymore either after dropping many dress sizes and she's grown in confidence so there’s no more hiding indoors. "People say they don’t recognise me since I’ve lost weight and I definitely feel different. I feel like I’ve got my life back and I want to make the most of it by doing all the things that my weight held me back from. Being the Sion Mills group’s greatest loser is lovely, but I really couldn’t have done it without Sinead and the rest of the group and their support. Staying to group each week was so important and I picked up many new tips and ideas." Sinead, who runs the Sion Mills Slimming World group, says: "The change we’ve seen in Meta is amazing, she's unrecognisable, inside and out, from the person who walked into my Slimming World group all those months ago. Not only does she look great, she's transformed her health and added years to her life, even her kidney function has rose from 28% to 50%. "She's been a huge inspiration to the other members of the group and I’m certain her

success will inspire many people to take action. We have a high percentage of local people who are overweight and putting their health and happiness at risk. With over 5 sessions to choose from every week: 9.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.com or call Sinead on 07835 439 707 or EIRE MOB 086 848 3888.

Many people also believe that the Doctor Fish therapy (Fish Spa) can cure problems like psoriasis, a disease that causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin. Hot spring spas in Turkey with such fish have been around for more than 100 years and some people with skin problems swear by the treatment. Strabane Council, Strabane District Sports Forum and Sperrin Springs are promoting this year’s event, which is open to everyone, whether they are seasoned roadrunners, recreational joggers or health conscious walkers. It is hoped that this partnership approach will help make the seventh such event for Strabane a success. This year’s 10k road race and leisure walk is on the Northern Ireland Athletics Federation fixture list and is expected to receive support both locally and from further a field. There are categories for all ages, as well as a walking section, giving everyone an opportunity to participate no matter what their fitness levels, however runners must be over 15 years of age. Speaking of the Road Race the Council Chairperson Michaela Boyle said, “The event is a tremendous boost to the sporting calendar in the district. Athletes from all over Northern Ireland will join with our local athletes in a spirit of friendly competition. However this event is for everyone, competitive or not, with a 5k leisure walk also happening in an attempt to entice more health conscious walkers. I hope both will be well supported”.
