Valu-pet, based next to Caldwell’s on the Lifford Road, opened up in February and comes under the management of one of the most experienced pet shop chains in the north-west. Pet supplies can be caught at rock-bottom prices, with a wide variety of foods on offer, as well as kennels and toys. The budget pet supplies shop is run by Gary Cooney, proprietor of Gary’s Pet World in Letterkenny, who comes with two decades of experience in running successful pet shops. It’ll be
managed on a day to day basis by Keith Duncan, who also comes with many years of experience in the pet shop game. The Valu-pet team will be of particular interest to breeders: “We have some great offers on foods for breeders, we offer very low prices so if someone is looking to buy in bulk then we’re well equipped to cater for that and give our customers the best deal possible,” Gary said. More exotic pets are also catered for, and you can pick up supplies for pet lizards and snakes in store as well. Some of the generous offers currently in store include twin packs of dog toys for £1.99 – and if you buy two you get a third free. You can also pick up dog shampoo for just 99p. Opened from 9.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, Valu-pet has the experience and prices to meet all your pets needs, you’d be barking mad not to call in! See advert on page 31

From 1963 to 1974 he was with the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra, also playing lead alto in Maynard Ferguson’s Band in 1968. During 1975 to 1993 he did four long spells with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra. Through the 1980s and ‘90s played many jazz gigs, led his own quintet and worked with drummer Tony Richards. It will contain references to Bernard McMahon, gardening guru and to Thomas Jefferson, who left Ireland for a new world in 1776 as well as many of the species that have arrived from America which make our gardens in Ireland so beautiful and bountiful. Its walls are built of stone, hewn from quarries, dug from the ground or tumbled by the seas surrounding our island. Cast Iron Cookware Brand Cast IronCuisine’ Cookware Brand “La Cuisine” relocates to Donegal ‘La relocates to Donegal FEATURE
COLOURED enamelled cookware brand La Cuisine has just recently relocated to Co. Donegal. Suppliers and Designers of Cast Iron Cookware to the trade, they have chosen Kilmacrennan as their base. The good news is that a small factory shop has now opened offering practically perfect factory seconds and clearance items including casseroles, fry pan, woks, grill pans, roasters etc. To mark the opening, they are offering large reversible cast iron grill pans for just €19.95 (New Stock) RRP €59.95 whilst stocks last. Last year they further expanded their product range by commissioning Irish Designer Marcus Notley to produce a premium range for them called the “Elysée” Series. Pictured are products from this new range. What differentiates this range from the other products on the market is primarily the handle size. The handles are quite unique. They have a wide-angle wedge profile that provides a superb, secure and natural hand grip.

The casserole lids have three stepped ridges. These collect (flavoured) steam droplets and cause them to gather, drop and disperse back into the food being cooked. This ensures that the food stays moist and improves flavour. They supply well known retailers throughout Ireland and the UK and have in recent times started distributing further afield, to New Zealand, Europe and Asia. “I am delighted to be back in Donegal”, says Managing Director Brian Gallagher who hails from Arranmore Island. “I have been away for over 25 years so it feels great to be able to establish this business here at home.”

It’s important to support your local record store Saturday, April 21, was that time of the year again - Independent Record Store Day. This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Sadly, the day of the independent record store in Strabane is gone and our nearest store now is the wonderful Cool Discs on Derry’s Foyle Street.
Like all similar stores, staying afloat is an ongoing struggle but for the present Cool Discs is holding its own against online retail and download culture. Stores like Cool Discs celebrate the physicality of music and that desire to connect with a piece of music, not just as something you simply hear, but something you can hold, that has linear notes and may shoot you off on new musical adventures elsewhere. And all this in a store where the staff share your passion by instigating lengthy (occasionally heated) conversations about bands and artists, while also suggesting new music you may never have heard of. The Record Store is still a magical experience and it was a delight to see so many people of all ages in attendance at Cool Discs on April 21. Of course, a record store cannot survive on one day of annual vinyl sniffing, but there was enough in evidence that day to see something positive in the record store’s future, for the time-being anyway. In this very column exactly a year ago I wrote: “there is no doubting that an increasing number of teenagers think that all music should be free, if indeed they are listening at all. The impact, power and popularity of gaming culture in 2011 would suggest that ‘Generation X’ and become ‘Generation X-Box’. There are always exceptions to the rule. If you are one such exception, make your voice

heard. “ Fast-forward to April 2012 I was delighted to be competing with a gang of teenagers at the seveninch vinyl section of Cool Discs, and this while a 15 year-old girl sat in the corner singing one of her own songs about sitting back listening to Rolling Stones. Her name is SOAK and is reason enough to never put a full-stop on your record collection,
no matter what age you are. If you haven’t ventured in lately or indeed in a few years, then do call into the record store, the Independent store, where the guy at the counter knows your name and has something new that he thinks might be right up your street. New Single, New Album, New Level for The Plea Donegal/Strabane rockers, The Plea have just released their debut single ‘Oh Ah Yay’, which is available on download only. It will be followed by the release of the band’s debut album ’Dreamers Stadium’ this month (May 4), courtesy of Planet Function Records. Already the album, which was produced by Chris Potter, who has worked with U2, The Verve and Keane, is garnering positive reviews. Hot Press magazine said of the album, “The title is hardly misleading. ‘Dreamer’s Stadium’ could be coming to a stadium near you soon.” The new single is also receiving healthy rotation on Radio Two at present as well. The Plea are fronted by Ballyliffin singer/guitarist Denny Doherty. He is joined by his brother Dermot on guitar and childhood friend Paul Toland on bass. Completing the quartet is Strabane drummer Gerry Strawbridge. After a few years of heavy touring across Ireland, Britain and Europe, the band’s ‘Hamburg period’ could be drawing to a close as they make a step up the ladder with the release of the new album. They are certainly not a band shy about their vision
Local rockers, The Plea
of the future. Their big sweeping anthemic sound clearly indicates an ambition not to do it small but big, with colourful texture and rousing choruses biting on Bono’s thick elevator shoe soles. “The Plea aren’t a work in progress”, states their publicist. “The Plea are the finished article. Over the years the band have slogged their guts out learning their craft and earning their spurs.
They’re the real deal. The release of the band’s debut album Dreamers Stadium, which will be nestling in a CD player near you in May, will likely go some way towards demonstrating this.” For information on how to get hold of ‘Dreamer’s Stadium’ and the new single, plus a variety of video clips and free downloads, go onto The Plea’s Facebook page - www.facebook.com/thepleaofficial.

When I first began writing this column a few months ago I made the conscious decision that I would firstly, inform my friends and family of any plans to mention them or their misfortunes and secondly, not to disclose any information that could possibly result in me being beaten with a very large stick. However I have broken both these rules on several occasions and will continue to do so again this month when I begin to tell the story of a little ball of fur that came into my life like a hurricane, leaving a mass of destruction on his way. I was firstly introduced to Alfie almost a year and a half ago whilst I was studying in Belfast. I came home one Friday evening to find a tiny puppy curled up ever so cutely in his bed. My first reaction was, “What is that, who owns the dog,” replaced by the more soothing approach that went along the lines of, “I love him, I love him, I love him,” so on and so fourth. Although Alfie was an unexpected edition to my family it soon became evident that he was not just for Christmas, he was for keeps, well initially. Arriving home week after week I noticed that Alfie was getting quite big for a ‘miniature dog’ and was now hairier than Bigfoot. Although I missed the mongrel when I wasn’t at home, his antics on my return left a lot to be desired. The werewolf in doggy form had begun his ‘teething’ stage and was making his way through another pair of my shoes when reality sunk in, our precious puppy was gone- had been replaced by something that wasn’t designed to be in the company of anything remotely edible. Apart from our blazing rows and fall-outs, my relationship with Alfie was sometimes loveable. I took him on the occasional walk, (weather permitting; he is horrible when he gets wet) played with him and rubbed his ever growing belly. We had quite a love/hate relationship in those early stages, I loved him when he was asleep and hated him when he ate my clothes. I remember thinking how people who talked about their pets as if they were human belonged in the funny farm. How could a dog/cat/ rabbit etc mean so much to somebody? Its easy to judge when you don’t have that relationship in you’re your life. I used to cringe watching those hideous programmes on TV where animals do ludicrous things like play the piano - now I’m converted. Alfie has been a nightmare, he literally terrorises everybody, the children in the street, family members- there all terrified but although he may be a hyperactive scoundrel he does possess those comedic qualities that cancel out many of his flaws.
His latest fascination is his attempt at the Great Escape several times a day. Due to the fact that he wrecks everything within reach, Alfie is sanctioned to the kitchen, which although to be fair does sound quite harsh but it is the only way of ensuring the house remains intact. When you leave the kitchen in our house you have to make sure the door is firmly shut and the table and chairs are pushed in (he enjoys a wee dance on the kitchen table) otherwise he will make a run for it, guaranteeing a half hour of hide and seek before his capture. His newest hiding spot is under the bed with his legs stretched peering out, grinning. Only way to get him out is to sit on the bed until be believes he has won, when he slowly ventures out grab him-never gets old. Having a dog in the house does have it’s disadvantages, the constant cleaning up after he has eaten another pair of shoes, the barking at the walkers on the bypass and his huffy moods when he has been refused another jellybean but apart from these minor imperfections I don’t think I’d swap Alfie for anything. My reasoning for dedicating a whole column to my fantastic furry friend, I watched Marley and Me and got a little sentimental.
Petition for Harsher Sentencing Receives Huge Support

OPENING TIMES

THE family of a local Strabane man, Simon Glenn who was tragically killed by a drunk driver last year have been overwhelmed by the response they have been given by the community following their petition to have the man who claimed his life sentence increase. Nineteen year old Conor Breen, from Eskra was two and a half times over the legal drink-drive limit when he crashed into the car driven by Simon (26) outside Omagh last April. Mr Breen was jailed for three years for causing death by dangerous driving in court last month. Martina Glenn, Simon’s mother, who was also injured during the crash, was appalled by the leniency of the sentencing decided to appeal the decision- with the Strabane community giving her their full support. Since the court hearing, a door-to-door petition is
planning to take the petition to Stormont; I am in contact with a few MLAs who are giving us their full support on this. If this does not change the sentence that was given to Conor Breen, we hope that it will change the sentencing process for drunk drivers, this was an injustice for us.” Speaking about the loss of Simon from their lives, Ann said: “Simon is missed so much by all of us. What we witness Martina go through every day is heart-breaking, there is nothing we can do but be there for her, Samantha Lili and Karen. They have had there hearts ripped from them and my mum is so broken-hearted. The last time she spoke to Simon he told her that he would have her sitting at the top of the table when he and Karen got married, with a big hat on. Simon was and still is one in a million and will never be forgotten. I will do my best along with the rest of the family to suc-

Most of the carers commended at the event have been providing care to children for many years; some had committed over 20 and 25 years of their life to fostering children.
Commitment n the night. Florence and Noel Goudie from Strabane were praised for the care and love they give to children, as well as their sense of humour and most importantly their commitment. Later, local woman Mary McCafferty, who has been a foster carer since April 1989, was also recognised for always focussing on the best interests of the children. Other locals who were feted on the night were Willie and Carmel Nelson; Victor and Alison Pollock; and Josephine and Raymond Sharkey. Describing them as going ‘above and beyond their duty’ to provide loving and stable environments for children and young people, guest speaker at the event, Mr Tom Cassidy, Assistant Director

of Women and Children’s Services at the Western Trust, said: “This event aims to recognise the achievements of all of our foster carers. Foster carers are local heroes for us all and we owe them a tremendous gratitude for the job they do in often difficult circumstances.” He added: “The thought of welcoming a child into your home can be daunting at first, but the fact we’re able to celebrate carers who have been fostering for up to 20 and even 25 years shows how incredibly rewarding it can be. These awards are the least we can do to thank all of these special

I congratulate and thank all who are receiving awards.” Awards were presented under the following categories to the foster carers: Carers with 20 years of fostering; Carers with 25 years of fostering; Carers who have retired; Foster carers who assist with training; and an Award for commitment to training and personal development.
Adoption, Fostering, Family Support and Early Years, said: “We are always in need of more carers to help provide this valuable and essential service, whether it is for long-term placements or weekend breaks, so we would urge anyone interested in fostering to come forward.”

Boost for farmers as multi-million pound fund re-opens Farmers in the Strabane area have received a boost this month, with the re-opening of calls for grant aid applications on 1st May for three of the principle measures under the Rural Development Fund in the North West Cluster Area. By Kevin McAnena It’s being labelled one of the largest ever capi-
tal investments in the rural economy throughout Strabane, Omagh, Limavady, and Derry council areas. The opening of the application process was announced by Dermot Nicholl, who is a director of Arc Northwest Limited the body which governs the distribution of the £15 million fund locally. Applications will open on 1st May and will close at 12 noon on 15th June 2012. Mr Nicholl, who is also a Sinn Fein councillor in Limavady, said: “We have been working

and Strabane District Council is clustered with Derry, Omagh and Limavady as the North West Group which is branded as ARC Northwest.
Mr Nicholl added: “Sinn Féin has been working with rural stakeholders throughout the area to ensure that interested parties will be in a state of readiness when the application process goes The total Axis 3 programme fund is £100 mil- live and we would now anticipate a significant lion. Long-awaited Funding Granted to Glenside LOCAL restbite facility, Glenside was overwhelmed last week after they were awarded £3,000 from the Big Lottery Fund. The Glenside club which caters for adults with learning disabilities across the Strabane District has been operating solely on donations for the past six years; the funding has sparked excitement across the community. Speaking to the Strabane Herald last week, club leader Mary Gallagher said: “I honestly applied for this grant believing it was a long-shot, we did receive a small grant from the Big Lottery almost six years ago, at that time the money was needed for equipment and things like that but we needed the money this time so we could take the members out on excursions.” The club is held once a week in the Strabane Academy where members get the opportunity to socialise with their friends and carry out a range of activities designed to ensure they have the best experience each week. The club which is run by volunteers has relied on donations from family members in the past.
Mary Gallagher continued: “The members love being out and about, they enjoy mixing with other people it is great for them and their families to be given that support. Many people are unaware of the work we do but we do it purely for the love of it. “ The funding that was awarded from the Awards for All programme, is a smaller division in the Big Lottery Fund that is designed for smaller grants for more applicants. £564,137 is divided between 73 groups across Northern Ireland. Groups are eligible to apply for funding from £500 to £10,000. Paul Hewitt, Chair of Big Lottery Fund NI said: “The process is simple; making it easy for applicants to successfully apply can have a huge impact on local communities and lives.” Mary concluded: “This funding will now allow us to organise more events and we are taking the group bowling at the end of the month. We will have more excursions this year thankfully. I just thought that after all the years of doing the lottery and winning nothing this is our win.”

Celebrities to help communities join LOCAL music star Janet Devlin will be taking part in an evening of inspiring stories and community projects in a bid to bring communities across Northern Ireland together. The launch of ROC Northern Ireland is set to be a landmark event drawing together people and organisations from statutory bodies, local authorities, faith groups and voluntary agencies throughout the country, in a concerted effort to make communities safer places to live. The special guests expected to attend are Tyrone football manager Mickey Harte and Jim Eastwood from the Apprentice. The evening is sure to be inspiring and entertaining. The live performances will support a line-up showcasing stories of community action from a wide variety of local and regional organisations. With groups such as Revie School of Dance and Vibe Academy taking part. Recently Minister of Justice David Ford commented on how ROC stands to compliment and contributes to Northern Ireland’s Community Safety Strategy: “Supporting safer communities is a key tenet of the new Northern Ireland Community Safety Strategy, ‘Building Safer, Shared and Confident Communities.” “I was interested to hear of the work of ROC in
various areas of Great Britain, and believe ROC has a valuable contribution to make in Northern Ireland. I am keen to see the Department of Justice working with faith groups and local voluntary bodies to build positive partnerships and find practical solutions to local problems. “ Debra Green, the founder of ROC, said: “I am very excited about the launch of ROC in Northern Ireland. We have received a very warm welcome, and I sense that this is the right time for greater collaboration for the good of our communities. Working together is the key to greater effectiveness and getting more done. We all want to live in safer, kinder communities and this will be achieved as each one of us makes a contribution, however small. Let’s take this opportunity to be part of this movement for change.” The event takes place on Wednesday 9th May at Belfast Waterfront, with a Resources Exhibition which will give people the chance to gather information about a wide range of volunteering opportunities. At 7.30pm the Main Event kicks off in the Waterfront Hall. Entry is £5 and tickets can be purchased online at www.roc.uk.com/northernireland or by phoning us on 0161 946 2373.

As the Twilight saga draws to a close at the end of the year, fans of the franchise need not despair, the latest phenomena to hit our screens is sure to keep teens across the globe on the edge of their seats. The Hunger Games, based on the hugely successful trilogy by Suzanna Collins adapted for screen is an all-round story of strength, perseverance and unconditional love. Set in North America teens, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawerence) and Petta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) teenagers from District 12 are chosen by the capitol to take part in the annual Hunger Games. The games which were created after the districts rebelled against the Capitol as a reminder of their control. Each year one boy and one girl are chosen from each district as tribute to take part in the games were 24 tributes are placed into an arena where they must fight for survival, the winner is
bathed in riches for the rest of their lives. Although the film is centered mainly on the main characters fight for life, the film also captures the harrowing conditions that Katniss and her family suffer in District 12, a gloomy and deprived area where food and light is scarce. As the games continue the audience is drawn back to these districts where the civil war is continuing giving the film the powerful emotion that captivates the audience. Capitol is a wealthy community where the people enjoy watching the misfortunes of the residents of District 12; they hold the games annually for their own entertainment. Although some of the scenes aren’t for the fainthearted the bloody deaths are what give the film an edge that will ensure future box-office smashes. Jennifer Lawrence gives an excellent performance as a woman with strength that will go to extreme measures for her family. The Hunger Games is a definite must-see.

what i think...
by Conroy
No phone, no facebook can it be done? ing other celebrities on their whereabouts and activities on a regular basis. Out of interest I tried the Twitter phenomenon and to be frank, it was foreign you’d need a translator to work out what half them ejjits are talking about.
From the age of 11 surviving without a mobile phone or a way of communication has been a bizarre concept to clasp, how did people communicate in the Stone Age when they didn’t have electric let alone an IPhone? I was quickly reminded by a stern looking woman (my mum) that until 20 years ago mobiles did not exist and they where the ‘best days’. I started my little experiment due to a mishap with my own phone (it went walkabouts) and with no instant desire to replace it I decided to see if I could survive without it for a few days. I had come to the conclusion I was turning a little weird when the ache that I used to feel when I forgot my phone for an hour failed to surface, until I realised that I still had regular contact with my friends through Facebook. Giving up Facebook for a couple of days would be no trouble, boring and overrated and with no addiction to it, the task itself was perfectly manageable, wasn’t it? Most of my friends would agree that I am quite easy to get in touch with on most occasions but with the lack of regular contact, the patience quickly began to wear thin. My house phone became the only form of interaction, I had to let them no I was still living and just had no need for a mobile, ( do not think they were very impressed). After two days
After almost four days of not logging into Facebook, I cracked, gave into temptation and realised after 30 seconds what I knew all along, I’m anti-Facebook.
without the desire to go on Facebook, I began to wonder if maybe people needed to try to communicate face-to-face more often. When did it become acceptable for people who were once close friends to just ‘like a status’ or ‘leave a comment’ for them to let them know that they where still breathing. Reflecting on how things have changed drastically over the last five years, I remembered how I could easily spend three/four hours on the phone to my friend talking non-sense, then ring the following evening and do the same thing over again. It seems too time-consuming now, with the stresses of work and life, maybe people do not have the same time or desire for human interaction. As I was off work during my little ‘experiment’, glued to daytime television, the shocking truth that the world has become obsessed with technology was revealed. Philip Scholfield, a man much older than me, openly admitted that he is addicted to Twitter, follow-

A shock to many, but if people were truly honest with themselves they’d admit that the only thing Facebook is good for, is getting yourself into trouble. Conclusion- social networking, I could live without; an absent mobile phone was a different story. Five days in, my mother’s phone was kidnapped; in goes my sim card and I feel human again. The most irritating thing of all when I gave in was that the phone didn’t bleep a hundred times and the realisation that I was maybe not entirely missed sunk in. Nothing infuriates me more when someone doesn’t text back and due to my ingenious idea I had become one of them, the person that never texts back. Although I found the task quite simple and not life-threatening, I do believe that mobile phones are a necessity and it is impossible to live in the 21st century without one. However people should make more of an effort to have proper conversations, there is only so much you can say in a text.
GHDS are a thing of the past according to many beauty editors, curls are the way forward and straight hair is long gone. The latest creation to hit the beauty scene is a little gem, the wand. Not to be mistaken as a crop from the Harry Potter saga, this magic tool is designed to take the hassle out of curling and give you more time to spend doing more important things, like painting your nails. The wands came onto the market quite recently and have taken over from the trust-worthy GHD, a styling tool that has been on the market longer than Peter Andre. Light and easy to use the wand is now hotter than the mini-heatwave that took everybody by surprise. Most beauty manufacturers have now come up with their own version. Below is a list of the top four to hit the market. • Babyliss - Porcelain Curling Wand £24.95 This wand is a must-have, with 5 different heat settings, creating different curls could never be simpler. From tight ringlets, to a soft wave this styler has it all. It heats in less than five minutes • Diva-Professional Styling Wand £34.99 If smooth waves is the look you want, this wand is ideal. The small barrel is light and easy to use. Takes around 10 minutes to heat. • Tresemme- Professional Curling Wand £29.99 The wide barrel is perfect for creating beach waves, although this one takes the longest to heat up it is also very light and simple. • Yogi- The Original Wand £64.95 Although this is one of the most expensive on the market, the wand heats in a matter of seconds, this wand is great for thicker hair and the curls stay intact for a few days.

Just last week on the 29th April, the Stabane unit of the Order of Malta under took a first aid course in the Strabane Cricket Club, which is the home base for the Order of Malta. This course was an “M.O.T.” for Order of Malta volunteers to take every three years and this year we decided that we would include outside bodies such as the staff and players of Strabane Cricket Club. John and Denise Hughes from region two of the
Order of Malta based in Omagh, attended and facilitated this course. This course enabled the Order of Malta to provide an enhanced service to the people of Strabane District and East Donegal. The course was well attended and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Strabane Cricket Club for their support and understanding on the day. We would also like to thank John and Denise Hughes from Region for the excellent delivery of the course.

DIVISION ONE FOOTBALL NEXT SEASON FOR ATHLETIC
Strabane, Champions Again!
SAFC Player Profile
Strabane Athletic........3 Glebe Utd .....................0 Strabane Athletic got their hands on the Brendan Love Cup on Tuesday night after a hard fought, faultless display against neighbours Glebe Utd. A three nil win, thanks to goals from Jason McGrinder, Brain Patterson and John Roulston ensured the Strabane men lifted the F&W Division Two title and gained promotion as Champions for the second year running. On a very uneven surface the 1st half was a ding dong battle with little goal mouth action. McGrinder and Cooke had shots that hit the upright but for all Strabane’s pressure they could not fine the opening goal. Glebe were always posing a threat with their speedy wingers and forwards but Strabane’s excellent defence dealt with any attacks with ease. Although missing a few key players, Athletic still seemed to have too much firepower going forward and when the first goal came early in the second half from top goal scorer McGrinder the players slowly but surely started to play the fluent passing game that they are accustomed to throughout the season. Patterson followed up with a powerful header that Burke in the Glebe goals somehow pushed over the bar with an outstanding one handed save. Devine and Cooke then missed great chances to extend the lead before Patterson scored a thunder bolt volley from inside the penalty area through a crowd of players to give some daylight between the sides. Rouslton came on with 20 minutes to go and extended the lead even further with a neat side footed first time shot past the out rushing Burke. Over 300 fans watched, cheered and congratulated the team on yet another title. F&W representative Mr Rory Lynch said a few words and presented the Brendan Love trophy to captain John Donaghey on the pitch and surrounded by his colleagues and fans he duely

lifted it to a raptureous roar and the party was in full flow. John stated; “Nothing is better playing football with friends from your home town and to captain a team to two successive league titles is an honour an a memory I’ll never forget.” He went on to say that he doesn’t think the silver wear is done with just yet and wants his team to challenge on all fronts again next year. A lot of hard work on the training pitch was put it but when you enjoy it as much as everyone has it makes it all worth while. Manager Martin Doherty said; “It is an honour to have managed my home town club and I am proud of all the players for their commitment and determination throughout the entire season and bringing yet more success to a town that has been starved of it for far too long.”
He thanked all those involved, his assistants, committee, sponsors and the mass fanbase that is expanding by the match. He went on to say that this is not just about the team tonight, it’s about everyone that helped throughout the season and a special thanks would have to go to young Aaron Brennan who couldn’t join the celebrations tonight but will be back stronger than ever next year. The clubs PRO, Marcel Griffin stated that the success on the pitch would not be achievable if it wasn’t for all the hard work put in by everyone, committee, management, players and club members who have helped put Strabane Atheltic on the football map in Northern Ireland. He thanked all the sponsors for their help and generosity throughout the season and hopes it continues for many years to come.
Quadruple Sporting Joy for Strabane! FROM FRONT PAGE Team manager Martin Doherty said that it is an honour to have managed his home town club: “I’m proud of all the players for their commitment and determination throughout the entire season, and in bringing yet more success to a town that was starved of it for far too long. I’d like to thank all those involved, my assistants (Declan McColgan and Gary McGettigan), the committee, the sponsors and the mass fanbase that is expanding with every match,” he said. He went on to pay special tribute to Aaron Brennan who suffered a broken leg in the team’s Mulhern Cup semi final against Tummery Athletic last week. Capturing the league title in front over over 300 fans was a slice of redemption for the club, who were missing several players after last week’s farcical Mulhern Cup game, which saw
three Strabane players sent off. Club PRO Marcel Griffin said the title win, coupled with the success of the Holy Cross College and St Mary’s Boys PS, provides a solid platform for future glory: “It’s great to have something to celebrate and this gives us lots to build on for the future. Success breeds success and things are certainly looking up for the game in Strabane. But success on the pitch would not be achievable if it wasn’t for all the hard work put in by everyone, committee, management, players and club members who have helped put Strabane Atheltic on the football map in Northern Ireland. I’d like to thank all the sponsors for their help and generosity throughout the season,” he said. The trophy will take pride of place at the club’s awards night at the Strabane Golf Club on Saturday 26th May

Club(s) played for: Been quite a few – Sion Swifts, Mourne Harps, Abercorn, Strabane, Institute U21’s, Barrowfield and last but definitely not least Strabane Athletic Club you support: King Kenny’s Liverpool Favourite Food/Drink: Steak and chips smothered in creamy peppered sauce Favourite TV Series/Film: Family Guy and Inbetweeners / Anchorman and Snatch Who is your favourite past / present footballer? Messi has to be the best player of my generation but I loved watching Zidane as well, a clever intelligent player. Who has been the best footballer you have played with and against? Best I played with would have to be Brendan McLaughlin. He is strong, calm and can read the game very well. Best I played against would definitely be Richard Clarke. He taught me a lesson in a Summer cup a few years back. What is your fondest memory in football to date? Liverpool winning the 2005 Champions League against AC Milan – the greatest ever comeback! Who do you consider to be the most influential player in SAFC? Think that would be John McLaughlin. We are a better team when he plays. He knows when to hold it up, when to give that incisive pass and scores important goals in the big matches. What other sports do you partake in and what position do you play? Gaelic Football (Strabane Sigerson’s) and I like to play anywhere in the forward line. What passed local footballer would you have liked to play alongside and why? Gregory Kearney. I have heard some many great stories about how good he was and what he could do on the pitch. Possibly the best player the Strabane town has ever produced to date. With SAFC having secured successive league titles and promotions and also competing in the final of the Mulhern Cup, what in your opinion is a realistic aim for next season for the club? To do the same again and hopefully add the Irish Junior Cup to that list. We have the players, experience, quality and determination throughout the club, so why not! Finally, in one word what does it mean to play for your home town football team? Class

STRABANE’S SOCCER STARS BAG HAT-TRICK OF TITLES!
Strabane’s young soccer heroes are being lauded as a ‘credit to the town’, after their remarkable achievement in winning three of the Northern Ireland Schools Cup titles last week.
siderable depth, the future of the local soccer scene looks as positive as it has been for years. Gerard feels the boys can build on the success to achieve greater things: “Things augur well for the future. These boys will now move on to men’s teams, and whoever gets them will be lucky. The discipline of it will help them. It’s good for keeping people of the straight and narrow. That’s one of the things I liked about it, people day ‘there’s talented footballers about Strabane but once they get to the age of 14 or 15 that’s them finished’ – but this showed we have disciplined lads,” he said.
By Kevin McAnena On a famous day for Strabane, the young footballers of Holy Cross College and St Mary’s Boys Primary School covered themselves in glory by bringing home the under-18, under 16 and Primary Cups. Busloads of supporters travelled from the north-west to the Ballymena Showgrounds to cheer on the young stars, and their support was repaid in style. In the first game of the day the Holy Cross under 18 side went 2-0 down before recovering with goals from Tom Carlin and an Aaron Patterson brace to win 3-2 after extra time. Later, in the under 16 final, a Gary Henderson penalty helped the school to a 1-0 win over St Joseph’s of Derry. The young boys of St Mary’s Primary School completed the treble when they swept Downshire PS aside, 4-0, in the Primary School Cup.
Family glory The day was particularly special for the Sweeney and Roarty families who had brothers on separate winning teams. Odran and Jason Sweeney played in the Primary School and under-16 finals respectively, while Mark and Patrick Roarty played in the Primary and under-18 finals.

Euphoria etched on the faces of the victorious Holy Cross Youth Team.
Not to be outdone, their Melmount Road counterparts St Mary’s Boys PS rounded the day off in style by winning the Primary School Cup for the fifth time in their history, and taking back the title they last won in 2009. The goals came from Rory McDermott, Ronan O’Neill and a brace from captain Niall McGinley.
St. Mary’s boys and coaches celebrate after lifting the Primary School Cup for the fifth time!
Gerard Boyle, coach of the Holy Cross teams and a PE teacher at the school, said it was an extraordinary achievement: “It was an ubelievable day, you could never have imagined it happening to be honest,” he said. He continued: “I think St Colman’s won one in 40-odd years, so for the Holy Cross to win two in one day is amazing, and St Mary’s Boys put the icing on the cake to watch them win then. It’s without doubt one of the greatest days in the school’s short history, the support up there from the school, and the parents, and people
Team coach Marty Gormley said the pupils can be very proud of themselves: “They were a credit to themselves, to their families, to their school and to Strabane, especially in the way they conducted themselves. It’s great for Strabane community in general. We’d have so much bad publicity through the years, but through adversity we’ve got through things and there’s some fabulous talent in this town. This is just the first step on the ladder.”
from the town was great to see.” “Great credit to them, it didn’t come easy. It’s something they’ve worked at for years, they consistently trained a couple of times a week and stuck at it. Even on the day, in the first game, to go in 2-0 down and then battle back. And in the second game we had our St Mary’s Principal Treise Flanagan also paid captain sent off in a terrible decision, but we tribute to her young heroes: “We’re extremely proud of them. They put in a lot of hard work. kept going.” The captains of the two Holy Cross winning Local talent pool teams were former pupils of ours as well, so it With the local talent pool now showing con- was a fantastic day for everyone,” she said.

Tips to improve your game Hi and welcome back to my final tips on improving your golf performance, I have 10 in total, here is a few of them - more to follow next month! I hope you are trying out the tips and enjoying the new season.
Have Self-Belief Many people wonder why the world’s best players make it; I for one believe it’s down to “Self-Inner Belief” and Massive Drive and Determination to win. In a recent piece of research carried out by “Genworth Financial” on behalf of the European Tour, some interesting facts were revealed. 74% of tour players interviewed stated, self – belief to be the most important attribute for winning. 51% of players also stated they consistently think and believe they are playing badly. So how on earth can one build self – belief If this is the case? My tip for players to build self- belief; • Decide to think differently about how you consider your round of golf • Keep a logbook, and record 10 of the best shots you played during each round • Bin the bad shots from your mind • Make this a habit, then your sub conscious mind will begin to see the good stuff, and build self - belief
no real consequence. At best it just feel and is not related to the real game, I do feel if you are working on your swing, taking a lesson from your PGA Pro, you will need to build a lot of repetition to work on a swing “What you think about you will bring about” change. However, in a lot of cases players must make Practice must have a purpose practice like the real game, this will build mental Many times I see players on a range or before muscle and prepare you for the pressure of the they go out to play, just bashing golf balls, with game.
By Shaun McGonagle
www.golffocus.net My tip for practicing with purpose is;
“Where your mind goes your body will follow”
• Find out what part of your game is a weakness • Short game practice with one ball • Long game practice to a small target • Keep a log book with facts • Start hitting golf balls to specific targets on the range or the course
To explain this concept, let’s think of this question “Is it possible to think of several things at the same time”?
Play one shot at a time
I observe this a lot when I start working with players; they seem to be thinking a lot on many external factors; their present score, swing tech“Practice like you want to play, play like you nical elements, other player’s performance. practice “ The problem is if you think you can think of all Create a solid Mental these elements, how can your mind be focused on Pre – Shot Routine the shot or putt you are about to play. Think for minute of an aircraft crew about to take off, do they go into pre check routine mind-set, before they pull up on a 747 jet with 300 passengers on board? Well like you I would hope so, that’s the mind-set of a top tour player; they have trained their brains to react to a set mental routine every time before they, hit a ball or putt. This keeps the mind in the “Present Sate” and lets the player hit every shot with a purpose, stops the mind from getting ahead of its self. It will give a player mental focus, stop thinking swing or score My tip for creating a solid mental pre shot routine is; • Access the yardage, club and wind • Select the club you will commit to • Find a specific target • Practice swing from behind the ball • Breath • Step into the shot and hit it
The key is to focus on just the shot in hand, as you cannot control other elements, but you can control what you choose to think. My tip for staying and playing one shot is; • Train the mind to keep to a solid mental pre shot routine • Practice this when playing golf and practice • Write it out in your logbook • Visualise it when you’re not hitting golf balls • You will then begin to play just the one shot • You mind will not think of external uncontrollable elements. “If your mind is not playing one shot it’s in other places” Remember and don’t forget to check back next month for the remaining 6 tips! If you want to know more about me or book a lesson please go to www.golffocus.net.
