Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.

Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.

Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.

“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”

As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

There’s a chance for you to relive those memories and catch up with familiar faces as a Townhall Reunion Night has been planned. The Townhall bar closed its doors almost ten years ago but local Quizmaster and former resident DJ in the bar, Paddy McGhee, has planned a night of nostalgia and classic club anthems to evoke memories of those halcyon days gone by.

“Some of the former bar staff will be in attendance,” explained Paddy to the ‘Herald’. “We’re hoping a lot of the old regulars will come along too, so everyone can catch up and relive those memorable nights. Tickets are £5 pound and available at Dicey’s, McFadden’s shop, and Hannigan’s shop, or you can pay at the door.” Paddy has promised a feast of club classics from back in the day, with a particular focus on 1997 to 2002. “I’ll be playing classics from the likes of Vengaboys, Fragma, Alice Deejay, Ann Lee, Ian Van Dahl, DJ

Monday morning This morning I had something to email and I was not at my usual computer. I had used this particular computer in the past however the issues I had had with internet access in the past with this appliance was long forgotten. It so happened that the email I was sending had a strict deadline so I got up very early to ensure I had plenty of time to get it sorted. It only took me a few minutes to get the article finished off and ready with an attachment to send. That was when the trouble started. The email would not allow attachments and I tried every trick in the book, as it were, to make that happen. I then remembered that left my laptop in my friend’s car who happened to be staying at the same place. As it was around 5.00 am I went on the hunt for the keys of my friend’s car hoping they would be left downstairs somewhere ‘handy’ so I could get access to the laptop without waking my friend. Well that was not to be as my friend is the cautious type and, as I found out only after wakening him up, he keeps his car keys under his pillow for ‘security’ reasons. Glad to get the keys, although somewhat disappointed I had to wake my friend up to do so, I went outside to get the laptop in the boot of his car. I opened the front door and heard a sharp high pitched noise. I was somewhat perplexed as I found it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the noise was coming from. Although I would have preferred not to have the noise around me I continued towards the car it was not loud enough to annoy anyone in the house.

Alarm bells? I had just opened the boot of the car when really loud alarm bells started to ring throughout the house. Very quickly all of the house guests were in the lobby wondering what was going on. We had to shout to be heard above the din of the alarm and it was soon realised that the only person who knew the alarm code had

not arrived yet. Suddenly the house phone rang and it was a security firm wondering to know why the alarm had been activated. Unfortunately the noise was such that hearing anyone on the phone was impossible. About 15 minutes later the Gardaí arrived and required everyone to identify themselves. I was still thinking about my email deadline however the alarm matter had to be sorted first. One of the garda decided to get in touch with the alarm security company and got the relevant

codes. When he entered the code the alarm went silent. What a relief. The whole episode took about an hour and a half which meant everyone except me could go back to bed. I rigged up my laptop and got the email article ready only to find that there was no internet access. Thank God this was not a typical Monday. Until the next time Tom Herron

YOUR BRAND NEW MONTHLY TRAVEL GUIDE

Palma City – An Alternative City Break Palma de Mallorca comes as a surprise to many people - it is stylish, sophisticated, intimate, yet bursting with life. Located on the southern shores of Mallorca, the island’s capital city looks out over the sparkling blue seas of the Mediterranean. Half of Mallorca’s population live here, enjoying the island’s best restaurants, shops and nightlife as well as a thriving arts scene and a lively cafe society. It is often compared to Barcelona for its architecture and we think it’s an equally desirable destination for a city break. The main attractions and shops are situated around the massive Gothic cathedral down by the sea front. Here is where you will find the old quarter, with it’s tiny lanes, quirky cafes and shops, and characterful buildings, all packed within a square kilometre. It’s very easy to explore and walk around this area. Down by the sea front is a large marina, and a promenade for both cyclists and pedestrians. The ferry port and cruise terminal is about 3.5 km from the old town. There is an urban beach just beyond the cathedral to the east, about a 10 minute walk. Palma’s multicultural history is reflected in the wonderful variety of architecture visible throughout the city. Palma’s masterpiece is its Gothic cathedral La Seu - it rises out of the city walls which once marked the edge of the sea. There is some lovely modernist architecture in Palma, thanks to Gaudi’s influence when he was on the island to oversee restoration works to the cathedral. The best known is the Fundacio La Caixa, now an art gallery. But there are plenty of other examples in the old town, so remember to keep looking upwards! If it’s arts and culture that you’re interested in, then Palma will not disappoint.

Things to do

Visitors to Palma de Mallorca will no doubt spend most of their time within the inner ring road (Las Avingudas) in the old town. Most of this part of Palma is traffic-free and it’s a joy to wander through the streets admiring architecture and browsing the plentiful shops. The tree lined promenades of La Rambla and Passeig des Born, home to florists and newspaper sellers, were built in the 19th century on a dried-up river bed. Along the seafront is the fabulous marina and palmlined promenade. To the west of the cathedral is the characterful district of La Llonja, which is home to quirky boutiques & art galleries. Beyond La Llonja lies Santa Catalina which used to house fishermen and craftsmen in days gone by, and has now resurrected itself as the hip & trendy area for all the cool kids. You’ll find plenty of bars, cafes & restaurants here, and the vibe is pretty arty/studenty. As you delve further into the city away from the sea, you’ll come across grand avenues with designer shops, and mazes of pretty streets offering gift shops, fashion boutiques and cafes. If walking is not your thing, you can hire bicycles. scooters and segways in Palma.

Restaurants

Palma has a superb choice of restaurants, encompassing a vast range of cuisines for all budgets. Within the historic centre, you’ll find plenty of eateries in La Llonja and Santa Catalina, both of which are close to the sea front and are at the heart of the nightlife of Palma.

Nightlife

most interest to the visitor will be within the inner ring road around the old pedestrianised old town. La Lonja may be the most popular area for nightlife. You’ll find a great selection of bars, restaurants and jazz clubs. Santa Catalina is also a top spot for an evening out. The main street, Carrer de la Fabrica is pedestrianised and has cafes and restaurants a plenty. In the back streets you›ll find more bars and tapas bars, many of which are open late. Along the front by the marina are more bars and a mixture of nightclubs. At the far western end there is a small marina called Can Barbara, which is home to some late bars and a couple of nightclubs, including Pacha. More sophisticated nightlife can be found around the Club de Mar just opposite.

recent years. Old historical palaces have been restored with upmost care, retaining original features and introducing all the modern technology we nowadays expect. The resulting hotels are simply the epitome of what a boutique hotel should be. Most of these hotels can be found in the tiny streets around the cathedral area of Palma, so whilst not car friendly (the hotel will help you with luggage and parking if required), you are perfectly situated for exploring Palma.

Gearing Up For A Return Proper order is about to be restored on Sunday nights, well sort of. After all the drama in the background, the new look Top Gear returns to our screens on May 29. Following the much publicised departure of previous hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, the new show will feature Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc. They’ll be joined by Motorsport guru and Formula 1 commentator Eddie Jordan, world record-breaking German racing driver Sabine Schmitz, renowned motoring journalist and YouTube petrolhead Chris Harris, and car reviewer and TV presenter Rory Reid. They have racked up over 7,500 miles between them, filming in nine countries over a period of eight months. The BBC is reported to have spent vast

The Stig will also return and he’ll be back in action on the Top Gear track, plus a whole lot more. A lot of hype has surrounded the return of Top Gear, and how the audience will react to the new look and new presenters remains anybody’s guess. Speaking to Radio Times, Chris Evans has already joked that he is preparing for the worst. “I think we can all agree that A whole new Top Gear team is on your screen from May 29th. some people in my business would sums on the new show, includ- in Surrey. I am a realist hoping for the best, while preparing for potential imminent career death,” he admitted. However, he added that if he does fall flat with the new show he “could apply for a correspondence course in becoming an international hitman”. Flavour of the month... Our June ‘Flavour of the Month’ is Strabane singer-songwriter and composer of the hit home grown musical ‘Gutz’, David Oliver. Where did the name ‘David Oliver’ come from?

When I was 16 I entered a songwriting competition. But being a 16 year old lad I was too embarrassed and shy to put my name to it, so I went with my middle name...David Oliver. I also signed up with IMRO at this time and used this, so basically that was supposed to be the alias but eventually became the more public name.

Five dream dinner guests (living or dead)?

Tom Crean, Hugh Glass, Hans Zimmer, Ronan Mc Kee and ‘Horse’ Mc Beth.

As a musician, where do the melodies come from?

Proudest moment?

Any other jobs you’ve done prior to being a musician?

Greatest musical influences and why?

Haven’t a clue...but being near the ocean seems to help!

I’ve worked on Building sites, Phil lynch’s shop, Safeways Supermarket and I’ve also been teaching.

All time favourite actor and why?

It constantly changes with me; I used to love Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas – the old school guys – but at the minute it’s Kevin Spacey, who is absolutely brilliant in “House of Cards”.

Who or what makes you laugh? A Favourite holiday destination? Wee bits of everything everyday. Hard to pass Donegal on a dry day!

A favourite film and why?

“Last of the Mohicans” – for the amazing soundtrack, scenery and story.

Favourite food?

Anything goes with me...I’m pretty easy to please.

An ideal night out? Family and friends and a live band, when everyone’s up for the craic!

Becoming a father (twice) and getting married.

Nothing specific, really. I’m open to all styles and genres and often find myself listening to anything; this keeps things interesting.

Something you love about Strabane?

My family and the amazing people.

Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future?

An ideal night in?

More jobs, investment and nightlife - just anything that gives the town a boost.

Most embarrassing moment?

Any clues as to what’s next for you musically?

Fire, hot whiskey (on a winter’s night) and having the craic with the wanes.

Ha! I’m hardly going to tell you that one now!!!

No idea...I’ll have to see what comes in from the Atlantic!!

Would you like someone you know to feature in ‘Flavour of the Month?’ If so, email us at: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk The Herald | July 2015

TotalMusic

Original Talent Captured On ‘Life In A Northern Town’ The wealth of musical talent in the Strabane area has been well documented within this very page for many years. Therefore, ‘Total Music’ is more than delighted to learn that a brand new CD compilation is currently being put together as a permanent document and celebration of that rich vein of local musical creativity. Due for release this month, ‘Life In A Northern Town’ was devised by local man Martin Gallen and has the support of Strabane Chamber of Commerce and Derry City and Strabane District Council. “The compilation title is pretty straight forward and does what it says on the tin,” explained Marty to TM last week. “It’ll have about 15 acts from the local area, including a few from Derry. The Council have got behind the project, too. They are going to encourage bars around the town to book acts that will appear on the CD to perform on their premises during the Summer Jamm festival on June 11. The Irish TV channel is also very interested in getting involved that day.”

Collective Approach Martin firmly believes that the CD will see the local artists and music fans pull together, and in doing so take the project further than it would with just a few people working on it. “A lot of different people

selves. With so few live outlets accommodating original material, the compilation will promote a local creativity that perhaps lacks the visibility that it rightly deserves. “When you scratch the surface of what’s out there you soon realise that there are so many people creating something. That’s their true talent and it needs to be seen and heard. The main objective of this CD is to show that there’s a lot more to Strabane than Original Material what tends to be on the news. We have the The CD will consist completely of original musical creativity to match anywhere and material written by the local artists them- hopefully ‘Life In A Northern Town’ will be a

in the town know a lot of different people. Getting them all together on one CD and working together in promoting it will see the CD have a far bigger reach. It’s a collective approach to promoting the musical talent in the town, and all the artists are going to be listed with contact details. It will be a CD that says “this is us and this is what we can do!””

There’s nothing like an anniversary tour to make a music fan feel his/ her age. This year, spare a thought for all the old punk rockers. For many of them it seems like no time ago that they were wearing badges of their favourite bands, all pinned with pride to their Harrington and Bomber jackets. However, with bands like The Stranglers, The Buzzcocks and The Undertones currently on 40th anniversary tours, those punk rockers find themselves reeling in the years in a manner their younger saliva-spewing spirits never envisaged. Time waits for no man or woman, and this year in particular being 40 years since punk exploded onto the television screens via The Sex Pistols’ notorious appearance on the Today show with Bill Grundy – among other means, mediums and methods – will be a reminder of that fact. As it happens, this month marks the 40th anniversary of one of

before a small audience that were completely absorbed in the raw ragged energy on stage. It all stood in sharp contrast to the 1970s that lingered outside the door and the 1970s that populated the hit parade at the time. The small gathering was liberated from those restraints that evening by the Pistols. Among them were a young Steven Morrissey, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Pete Shelley, Howard Devoto, Mark E. Smith and Mick Hucknall. From that group alone we would eventually get The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, The Buzzcocks, The Fall, Magazine and Simply Red. Granada reporter Tony Wilson was also in attendance, and that night was the spark that instigated his setting up of Factory Records and, eventually, the Hacienda, which was at the very heart of dance and club culture in the late 1980s. It was undoubtedly an iconic show. Naturally, if all who now claim to have attended actually did, Wembley

the most famous gigs of the 1970s, which is a bold statement considering there were barely 50 people in attendance.

The Sex Pistols Ten years and 18 days after Bob Dylan’s famous “Judas!” show at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, The Sex Pistols played upstairs in the Lesser Free Trade Hall on June 4, 1976. They played

positive reflection of that,” explained Martin. Confirmed artists set to feature on ‘Life In A Northern Town’ include Marc Rigney, Camhanach, Paul Tully, Those Ghosts, Hcbaby (aka Danny Houston), Gerard i2 (aka Gerard McDaid), Lauren Bird (aka Lauren McGeough), The Docs, Brian Hassan, Harks (aka Glen Harkin), Ruari McCafferty and Matthew Ward. More acts are to be confirmed soon. It is also hoped that this is just the first volume and that volume two with a group of different local artists will appear in the future. would struggle to hold the audience! That concert in June ’76 has been documented in films such as the Ian Curtis biopic “Control” and “24 Hour Party People”, and will probably feature in the forthcoming Morrissey biopic, “Steven”. It has also been celebrated in print, in books such as David Nolan’s “I Swear I Was There: The Gig That Changed the World” and Jon Savage’s “England’s Dreaming”. Can small gigs still have an impact on a group of individuals in the same manner 40 years on? Most certainly! The records deals may not be dangling like they were for bands during the peak of Punk and New-Wave, but never confuse the inevitably terminal condition of the record business for a lack of spirit in contemporary music; it’s out there kicking its audience in the guts and inspiring them to go and make their own indelible imprint. All too often we hear the same old “where are the new bands?” rhetoric. We’ll hear it again during these 40th anniversary landmarks. The landscape has changed but there is always a noise being made, never doubt that. Whether you look for it or not is up to you. Henry Rollins was once asked if Punk was dead. “Pal,” he replied, “if you have to ask, it’s dead to you!”

“I Was an Astronaut” really makes the grade Whether in a solo capacity or under the We Are Aerials moniker, Derry singer-songwriter Conor McAteer has proven to be one of the most outstanding and creative artists in the North for almost a decade. He has returned once again with a solo album, “I Was an Astronaut”, and it truly is a thing of devastating beauty. Nothing is ever off limits for McAteer as a songwriter, and here we find songs of heartache, loss

and violence sitting next to songs of longing, lust and even infant “snotters”. Nautical references pop up throughout and a strong, confident and alluring folk element sails (pardon the pun) along beautifully. With subtle touches of strings and piano used but never over-cooked, McAteer knew what kind of record he wanted to make and that’s clear from start to finish. Even accomplished musicians such as Peter Doherty on double bass and Mark Donnelly on drums are used sparingly but purposefully on gorgeous tracks like ‘Atlas’ and ‘Still’. On top of all the lyrical content and fine production is McAteer’s

voice: a voice that is spread like honey on top of everything beneath it. In recent interviews he has stated that he prefers the studio to live performance these days. He has also hinted that this will be his final record for the foreseeable. Artists tend not to have a say on what the future holds given that the very creative component within them is like an involuntary muscle. However, if “I Was an Astronaut” is to be McAteer’s swansong it is a powerful final act; if it’s not, we’ll be watching this space for returning spacemen. Derry singer songwiter Conor McAteer.

Who is suitable for treatment?

A suitable candidate is someone who is aged 30+ who has noticed that the skin on their face or neck has become more lax and wishes to lift and tighten the relevant area. For patients in their 30s it is typically used to stimulate collagen production and hence help delay the ageing process. Patients in their 40s and 50s are the most common age group who have this treatment. It is also suitable for those aged 60+ provided the degree of laxity is not too great. The California Feetwarmers Masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing. The California Feetwarmers are one of the hottest properties on the US Lindy Hop revival scene, renowned for an earthy depth of character that sets them apart from others who have followed that throwback path to New Orleans, Circa 1920. Acknowledged masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing, their boisterous on-stage antics are solidly underpinned by playing that is as close to the source as it can be. Based in Los Angeles, the California Feetwarmers dust down and re-work old classics, re-visiting material from The Blue Ridge Playboys, Scott Joplin, The Memphis Jugband and Emile Grimshaw’s Rag Pickers. Their music has been described as ‘A joyous thing – a party’ and the party arrives at the Balor this June! “Enough spark to raise the dead!” – Folkwords “Should be on prescription for those who need their spirits lifted!” - AmericanRootsUK “This would make any party go with a swing” – The Daily Express

Cash Returns - the award winning ‘Best Tribute Band in Ireland’ - set for the Millennium Forum In a very short space of time Cash Returns has become the country’s leading Johnny Cash and June Carter tribute act.

everyone who has come to our shows to support us, without which we would not be on the road. I’d also like to thank Bob Mullan Motors for all his support for what we do.”

Led by JP Mac and his sister Caroline, they are presently one of the busiest bands out on the road, with tour dates up and down the country and a practical residency at the Crumlin Road Gaol. Their success out on the road was cemented at the recent Hot Country TV Awards, where they won the Best Tribute Band in Ireland Award.

The Cash Returns show is set to take to the Millennium Forum in Derry on June 17, and JP Mac can’t wait to hit the stage. “It’ll be our first time to play the Millennium Forum so we’re very excited about that. We’ve also developed the show and made a few tweeks and changes over recent times, so we look forward to delivering what we believe to be a great night’s entertainment for Johnny Cash fans,” he said.

“It was a nice thing to pick up because it was the first award of its kind,” explained ‘the man in black’ himself, JP Mac. “What a reception we received. But a huge thank you must go to

Acclaimed new book detailing the life of Strabane football enigma, Adrian Doherty by Oliver Kay

‘Bob Dylan in a no. 7 shirt.’ A

book detailing the life of Strabane man Adrian Doherty has been lauded across the board since its release late last month. “Forever Young: The Story of Adrian Doherty, Football’s Lost Genius” by Chief Football Correspondent for The Times, Oliver Kay, details Doherty’s early life in Strabane, to his elevation towards the cusp of first team football at Manchester United at the age of 16, to the injury that derailed his career, to his life beyond Old Trafford and his untimely passing just a day before he turned 27 in June 2000. While not without addressing the surroundings of the tragic accident that led to his death in the Hague, Holland, the book has been praised as a celebration of a unique talent both in a footballing sense and in a creative sense, with the focus on the latter standing in sharp contrast to the stereotypical connotations one would have of a professional footballer. Doherty immersed himself into a culture that most sportsmen and women from an early age divorce themselves from: writing music, poetry, prose and consuming as much literature as he could get his hands on. Doherty often preferred to busk anonymously on the streets of Manchester rather than take up his complimentary ticket to Old Trafford.

his physical bravery. He was a small guy, not the most powerfully built. He looked like he would get kicked around a lot and he did but he kept coming for more and more, demanding the ball, taking people on, getting kicked again, picking himself up, taking them on again and setting up a goal. Certainly for a large period of those first 18 months at Old Trafford everybody was talking about him as someone who would make it and would be a star in the The new book by Oliver Kay, United first team sooner Chief football correspondent rather than later.’

Enigma

Bob Dylan In the book, Ryan Giggs, who many insist Doherty was on a par with - if not at one point even better than - recalls a ‘quiet lad’ with interests beyond football that were not even on his own radar at the time. ‘He was unorthodox in the way he dressed and the way he acted. He wasn’t like the rest of us. He played the guitar, he loved his music and he was obsessed with Bob Dylan. As a 16-year-old, I didn’t have a clue who Bob Dylan was,’ he explains.

colourful life. It is that colourfulness that makes ‘Forever Young’ different from the average sporting biography. Former Northern Ireland international and ex-Derry City player/manager, Felix Healy said of the book that ‘parts

While Doherty may not have looked or indeed acted like a footballer, it became a different story when he took to the pitch. In the book, Gary Neville recalls the first time he saw Doherty play back in 1990. ‘That night I watched him for the first time and he was frightening. He stood out in that team like you wouldn’t believe. I was looking at the standard of player at the club and thinking that’s the standard I’ve got to get to...as a 14 year old looking at Doherty and Ryan Wilson (Giggs) and the level they were at, you were just really scared at how good they of Adrian’s journey almost read like were.’ something from Jack Keroauc’s ‘On the Family, friends, former team-mates and Road’.’ fellow creatives contributed to the book However, of his footballing prowess and described the varying aspects that Doherty was spoken of in awed tones made up Adrian Doherty in his short but from those he grew up with, right

through to those in the higher echelons of Old Trafford. Speaking to Newstalk, the book’s author Oliver Kay addressed Doherty’s physicality, which belied his ability in the most amazing fashion. ‘All the kids that he played with at school

and at youth level in Derry and Strabane and at Northern Ireland schoolboy level, they all talk about his incredible skill and speed. For all the ethereal aspects of his personality, everybody who saw him at Old Trafford would comment on

for the Times.

Gary Pallister, who had just joined United for a record fee at the time of £2.3 million, echoes those sentiments in the book. He recalls being at the Cliff training ground and thinking, ‘this kid is really talented; this kid can do things that your mere mortals can’t.’ A former team-mate and house-mate, Wayne Bullimore, says, ‘On the pitch, he wanted the ball, he wanted to express himself and he knew what he was about. He was brave too, as tough as old boots. Off the pitch he was completely different. The word that comes to mind is “enigma”. He would love this but, to me, he was just like Bob Dylan. It was like having Bob Dylan in a no. 7 shirt.’ Something that is prevalent throughout the book is the free-spirited nature of Adrian Doherty, and in some ways the book was an opportunity to present the truth in the face of rumour and unfounded hearsay following his unfortunate cruciate knee ligament injury in 1991, departure from Manchester United in 1993, eventual drift from football and the tragic accident in the Hague in 2000. As Doherty’s brother, Gareth, points out in the book, ‘what a lot of people don’t realise is that the years from twenty to twenty-six, after he left football, were the happiest of Adrian’s life.’

Huge prospect Adrian Doherty in action for Manchester United. Adrian and Ryan Giggs were considered the best talents in the Utd academy at the time.

Fame

The book makes it clear that Adrian Doherty was as far from a tortured ‘could’ve been’ ex-footballer as is possible. It was, as Oliver Kay explains, a stage in his life that he simply moved on from. ‘When he was playing in wine bars, acoustic clubs and poetry nights he never ever talked to people about his time at United. Seemingly that wasn’t out of bitterness because nobody had ever encountered any of that from him; he just seemed to be somebody who had moved on and it didn’t matter to him as much as it would’ve done to, probably, most of us if we were in the same position...he was never interested in the fame, the trappings of fame or the money. He really disliked money and what it did to people, so the idea of him being jealous of what David Beckham had, or jealous of the success that Ryan Giggs had, well he just simply wasn’t.’ “Forever Young: The Story of Adrian Doherty, Football’s Lost Genius” is the story of a life whistling to its own tune. There were to be many more tunes that sadly we’ll never hear. But, finally, the true story of Adrian Doherty has been told, and in all its beauty and sadness it’s a story that needed telling.

Young Adrian Doherty with Derry City football legend Liam Coyle.
