There has been a real buzz to the Richmond Centre of late and it’s set to continue well into the festive season and beyond. New branding, a new family centred approach, and continued commitment to customer service have all been instrumental in the current resurgence that has seen shoppers flock to the Centre. This Christmas will be no different, with a new custom built ‘Santa’s Log Cabin’ - which even has its own fireplace - which is certain to be a major draw, with kids and parents calling in to see the “man in red” ahead of his own busy night a few weeks later. The Santa experience doesn’t stop there. The Centre – at the heart of the Maiden City’s walls – will also be providing a unique experience for children, who will have the opportunity to have breakfast with Santa in Jamm Restaurant. Recently appointed Marketing Manager, Jennifer
Taylor said of the Centre: “Santa arrived in a flurry of excitement last week to his new Log Cabin, and he was delighted! Santa and his elves will be busily meeting children in the weeks leading up to Christmas, where they can deliver their gift wish list. It will be a magical experience unlike anywhere else and isn’t one to be missed.” These are exciting times at the Richmond Centre and the future looks very bright. New stores are due to open soon, giving the people of the town and those who come from further afield, an allround enjoyable shopping experience. “The Richmond Centre is the leading Shopping Centre in the Northwest, housing all the top brands, including JD Sports, New Look, Argento and Argos to name just a few. It’s the ideal place to find that perfect present for a special someone that will both surprise and delight them, as well as rest the ol’feet with a delicious coffee or spot of lunch in Jamm or even a cheeky Nando’s,” Marketing Manager, Jennifer Taylor added.

How SAD are you?
The cold, the shorter days and the lack of sunlight make winter a struggle for some. Getting up in the morning in darkness and returning home in darkness stands in sharp contrast to a morning and evening in June. That being said, and as our recent summer illustrated, blue skies around these parts are few and far between! However, a bad summer is still one with long evenings, even if it’s raining! But winter’s shorter days make the season a constant downer for many, with the lack of light affecting mood, energy levels and general outlook. But how real is seasonal affective disorder (aptly known as SAD)? We took to the streets of Strabane to find out your views...
“I think it’s a bit of a farce, really. The days are shorter but you’ve just got to get on with it. It’s the same for everybody. A good swim would soon perk you up at any time of the year. Cold water will give you a good shake too!”
Joe Hegarty.
“It’s more to do with your outlook on life rather than any seasonal influence, I think. You need the four different seasons, and one compliments the other. If it was just the same all year long that wouldn’t be good either. The summer is great but look at those leaves on a day like this. Beautiful. You can’t buy that.”
“I like the home comforts of a cold night, and you also get a good night’s sleep at this time of year. Not liking the weather or the season is an opinion, not a condition - that would be my opinion.”
Ruraidhri Hassan.
“I can probably understand why people don’t like this time of year, but personally I love the dark nights, the warm fire and generally cozying up for the evening. Each season has it’s own special treats.”

Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving.

Healthwise, always the wise option Healthwise Pharmacy is set to celebrate Customer Care Day over two days this weekend on Friday November 13 and Saturday November 14. The Pharmacy, located on Bridge Street in Lifford, has been a staple of local life for many years now, and the owners and the staff want to use these two days to show their appreciation to their loyal customers. Robert Wilson, Pharmacist and part-owner, has been a regular friendly face in the store for 14 years. He outlined to us the idea behind Customer Care Day. “We’ll be holding it on the Friday and Saturday, and we’re merging it as a general ‘thank you’ to our customers. We understand the challenges out there between the sterling and the euro, and one thing and another, so we want to show how much we appreciate their loyalty to us,” he explained. Mr Wilson believes that the personal touch is the gateway to success in customer care. “We’ve been here a long time, so we’re very well established with a great relationship with doctors and customers alike. It allows us to be able to liaise with the doctor on the customer’s behalf if it’s something he or she is not

A Night of Hysteria and Hairspray Def Leppard and Whitesnake return to Belfast on December 7 for a co-headliner at the SSE Arena. If that wasn’t enough to make you dig out your denim and hairspray, opening the night will be Black Star Riders: a dynamic collective formed from the ashes of Thin Lizzy featuring the great Scott Gorham. It’s not the first time Def Leppard and Whitenake have toured together. “We had such a wonderful time when we did it back in 2008. It’s a great experience for rock fans to be able to see two great live bands on the same stage on the same night,” commented Def Leppard frontman, Joe Elliott, recently. Formed in Sheffield, Def Leppard have been hailed as the UK’s greatest-ever arena rock band. They have sold over 100 million albums worldwide in a career that spans three decades and have a highly anticipated new self-titled studio album coming in late 2015. Their influential career includes countless hit singles and ground-breaking multi-platinum albums – including two of the best-selling records of all time, ‘Pyromania’ and ‘Hysteria’, both of which have been given the elusive Diamond Award. These two albums alone contain 10 hit singles including the classic Leppard tracks ‘Rock of Ages’, ‘Animal’, ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’
and ‘Foolin’’. Def Leppard – Joe Elliott (vocals), Belfast’s very own Vivian Campbell (guitar), Phil Collen (guitar), Rick “Sav” Savage (bass) and Rick Allen (drums) – continue to be one of the most popular live draws in rock music. The group’s spectacular shows, filled with powerful melodic rock anthems, continue to sell out venues worldwide. Def Leppard’s epic live shows and arsenal of hits have become synonymous with their name, leading the Rock Legends to be heralded as an institution in both the music and touring industry. Co-headliners Whitesnake carry a rightful and righteous reputation as one of the world’s leading rock’n’roll bands. Founded by former Deep Purple singer David Coverdale, the band have earned multi-platinum albums and multiple top 10 hits worldwide, including two number one singles with ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Is This Love?’ as well as
Def Leppard (Top) and Whitesnake.
the unforgettable hammer of ‘Still Of The Night’. Bombast, bravado and passion have helped establish Whitesnake as the perennial platinum favourite they have become and they turn all their characteristics up to eleven, even the naughty bits! The world-renowned group featuring Coverdale on vocals, Reb Beach (guitar), Joel Hoekstra (guitar), Michael Devin (bass) and Tommy Aldridge (drums), released their 12th studio record ‘The Purple Album’ in May. The album is a tribute to the band and to the music Coverdale wrote and recorded with Deep Purple Mark three and four. Commenting on the forthcoming Belfast show, Coverdale, in typical champagne laced humour, said, “Ohh, have you got trouble…Brother Joe and The Lepps?…DC and The Snakes?... Them Black Star Riders?…On the same night???…I can’t wait!!...SEE YOU THERE!!!” The show starts 18:50pm sharp and you’ll not want to miss a second of it.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Announce Irish Dates Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have announced their first European tour in nearly two years, playing their biggest shows on the continent to date and two Irish dates: one at the 3Arena in Dublin on Friday, April 15, and one at the SSE Arena, Belfast on Thursday, April 21. The duo are partnering with Plus 1 so that a euro/one pound from every ticket purchased on their tour will go to support Partners in Health, Equal Justice Initiative, Youth Speaks and the 30/30 Project. They are committed to using their platform and resources to advance issues of equity and justice and are partnering with organizations dedicated to these same values. “Downtown” continues to climb the Billboard and radio charts on the rise to quickly become the duo’s third Top Five hit. The song, which features Eric Nally
and Hip Hop pioneers Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe Dee and Melle Mel, has been performed on the VMA’s and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and the video has been viewed over 45 million times on YouTube. It was certified Gold with over 500,000 in sales in the US, selling over one million tracks worldwide. “Downtown” is the first single from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s follow up to their multiple Grammy Award winning, platinum selling debut album ‘The Heist.’ Album cut, “Growing Up (Sloane’s
Song)” featuring Ed Sheeran was released in August. The song was written before the birth of Macklemore’s first child and is dedicated to his daughter Sloane Ava Simone Haggerty. More details on the album are to follow soon. Ticket Information: Friday 15 April, 3Arena, Dublin -tickets from €46.14 including booking fee, facility fee & charity donation. Thursday 21 April, The SSE Arena, Belfast tickets from £34.20 including booking fees & charity donation.
Something Out Of The Blue David Bowie is set to release a brand new singe on November 20. It will be titled “Blackstar” and will be followed by a new album of the same name on January 8, the day of his 69th birthday. The album will come exactly three years after Bowie surprised the music world by releasing a brand new single, “Where Are We Now?”, on the day of his 66th birthday on 2013. It was a surprise for many, ‘Total Music’ included, as many of us had assumed that the Thin White Duke had settled into a life of retirement from music. As it turned out, he was working away on
a new record well under the radar of social media, which was one hell of an accomplishment for these times. The album in question, “The Next Day”, would follow in March 2013. So far, ground control has remained very tight lipped about this new album. According to The Times the album will be Bowie’s “oddest yet,” which is a bold assertion given the man’s back catalogue. In saying that, last year’s stand alone single release “Sue (Or in a Season of Crime)” was quite a bold step into avant-garde Jazz, so one never knows where this next record will take us. It has also been claimed by The Times that the new album had been recorded at the Magic Shop, which is the small recording
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to tour Ireland
studio in Soho in New York where Bowie worked in secret for nearly two years recording “The Next Day”. The studio has also been a favourite of the late-Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Norah Jones and Dave Grohl. Last month, it was announced that Mr. Bowie had written the theme song for a new television show airing on Sky Atlantic, “The Last Panthers,” which is his first project for TV or film in 20 years. He has also composed music for “Lazarus,” a hallucinatory stage sequel to “The Man Who Fell to Earth”, wand it is presently being rehearsed in New York. It’s clear that rumours of Bowie’s retirement were wide off the mark; however a return to the live stage seems a bit further off.
David Bowie
Speaking to “Music Week”, Isle Of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings claims that Bowie has told him personally that he has no plans to tour.”David is one of the best artists I’ve ever worked with,” Giddings said recently. “But every time I see him now, before I even speak to him, he goes, ‘I’m not touring’ and I say, ‘I’m not asking’.”

Supergirl Takes To Sky One While her cousin continues to fight the good fight on the big screen, Supergirl has flown her way to the television screen with a brand new series currently airing on Sky One. ‘Supergirl’ was developed by Ali Adler, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, and stars Melissa Benoist as the title character. Before the destruction of the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El is sent to Earth by her mother Alura to protect her cousin, Kal-El. Her ship is knocked off course into the Phantom Zone and Kara arrives twenty-four years late without having aged. The adult Kal-El, now known as Superman, puts Kara in the care of Eliza and Jeremiah Danvers.

She reveals her powers to the The Danvers family teaches Kara to be care- world by saving a plane full of people, includful with her powers, until she has to reveal ing her sister Alex (who is worried about the
exposure from Kara). Kara later reveals her secret to her co-worker Winslow, who helps Kara perfect her abilities, and is dubbed “Supergirl” by Cat. Supergirl’s actions attract the attention of Vartox, an alien responsible for the attempted plane crash. Kara learns that Alex works for Hank Henshaw as an agent of the Department of Extra-Normal Operations, and that her ship’s detour into the Phantom Zone resulted in a Kryptonian prison ship crashing to Earth and freeing hundreds of prisoners, many of whom were sentenced by Alura. Kara proves to Hank that she is ready to protect Earth by challenging Vartox. A few familiar names, and surnames, show up along the way, including Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), former Daily Planet photographer, now living and working in National City for Cat Grant as her new Art Director and
The University of Death One of the original ‘scream queens’, Jamie Lee Curtis, is back leading a cast in a contemporary ‘Whodunnit’ series, where the line between who is the murderer and who will be murdered next is a fine one indeed. Ryan Murphy, whose television CV includes hits such as Glee and American Horror Story, has developed a unique style of hyper black comedy and unpredictability in his work, and his signature is all over Scream Queens, a university-set serial killer romp already enjoying a major buzz in the United States and currently airing on E4. It stars Emma Roberts (niece of Julia) as a WASPish, status-obsessed big girl on campus, with Jamie Lee Curtis as her nemesis professor, and Skyler Samuels as a Nancy Drew-style amateur sleuth investigating a 20-yearold murder mystery that, in the first episode, took on a
chilling new relevance.A series of mysterious murders follow, with the killer appearing to be targeting the members of Kappa Kappa Tau: an exclusive sorority at the show’s (fictional) Wallace University. The Dean (Lee Curtis), who first shot to fame when she starred in John Carpenter’s Halloween back in 1978, makes matters worse when she goes to war with the Kappa sorority. The body count rises and no-one is above suspicion it seems, and yes, there’s a lot of screaming. Oh, and Glee actress Lea Michelle also stars as a necrophiliac. Lovely! Check Scream Queens out every Monday on E4 at 10pm.
he is a potential love interest for Kara. Lois Lane’s cousin, Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan-Tatum) also shows up as a Jimmy’s ex fiancée. There is even a recurring role for Helen Slater, who portrayed Supergirl in the 1984 big screen version. This time she’s playing scientist and Kara’s foster mother Eliza Danvers. Let’s hope she has better luck as Supergirl’s ‘mum’! The series airs every Thursday on Sky One at 8pm.

Morning pages were made popular in the early 1990s by author and journalist Julia Cameron. Julia describes Morning Pages as one of the basic tools in her bestselling book ‘The Artist’s Way’. Morning Pages are simply three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing done first thing in the morning after waking. There is no wrong way to do them and it is just a matter of picking up a pen or pencil in the morning and writing whatever is in your head at that particular time. Remember we have been processing ‘stuff’ in our minds throughout the night and morning pages are a very effective way of getting it all out of our heads. You do not have to think about what you are writing. Just let it flow. They can contain moans and groans, perhaps a ‘to do’ list or details about what you did yesterday. All I know is that they really work for me. Surely there are many mornings when I wake up and the thought of having to write 3 A4 pages of whatever is in my head makes me want to turn into the pillow and hope the notion of such an effort simply goes away. This usually indicates I have a greater need for Morning Pages at these times. I write Morning Pages usually in pencil and they are an illegible scribble therefore I can leave them lying about as not even I can read the writing. If you are anxious of someone seeing what you have written simply shred, burn or destroy them when finished. This is not to say you are deliberately going to write something in your morning pages that you would not like someone else to see. It simply allows you the freedom to do so without feeling anxious if you do. Here are just some of the comment people have stated around their experiences of practicing Morning Pages for a period of time...
Christy’s Bar
• I’ve come up with ideas that changed my businesses • I’ve worked through issues that were bothering me and seemed overwhelming • I’ve been better in tune with my intuition and listening to my heart • They have shown me what’s most important in my life and helped me to focus on that • They have helped me to leave situations and people that weren’t good for me • I’ve been able to unlock a lot of the chains of my mind and open up the dam so that creativity can flow • They bring me more serenity and help to quiet my overactive mind each day • It is like taking the psychic stone out of my shoe • Whatever I write about in morning pages ceases to bother me for the rest of the day
Christy’s Bar
• I may have a ‘to do’ list in the middle of my morning pages • Morning pages have changed my life • I am much more productive when I do morning pages • Morning Pages have been a life saver for me When I was first introduced to the concept I really believed I had enough to do in the mornings without adding Morning Pages to the list especially when it I realized it takes about 15 minutes for me to write three A4 pages. I persevered however and moaned and groaned my way through them and slowly but surely realized just how valuable they are to me. They are a part of my everyday life now as they allow me great freedom throughout the day. Have a go. Until the next time Tom Herron The Herald | July 2015

‘11st lighter and on top of the world’ Before she joined Slimming World, Helen Scott found even short walks a struggle. Now she’s lost 11st 6½lbs, dropped nine dress sizes and is up for every challenge that comes her way. ‘I knew my eating was out of control, but didn’t know how to change. Growing up I didn’t have a real weight problem. I ate home-cooked, healthy meals and we did lots of walking. When I started Uni all I really thought about was food. I was the biggest of my friends and, although they did accept me for who I was, I still felt uncomfortable. Then one Christmas I came home for the holidays and I overheard my mum, my brother James and my sister Clare discussing my weight. I didn’t confront them, I just listened in, and it really upset me. They were clearly concerned. They didn’t understand, though, that I was beginning to accept that I was always going to be overweight. I had tried many diets before – they just didn’t work for me. The following August my boyfriend Richard and I visited Portrush and, as I got into one of the rides, the safety bar refused to lock. It took three men to push it over me and I just wanted to die. After that we moved in together and always ate takeaways rather than cooking for ourselves. We didn’t do any exercise and we drove everywhere. No wonder I got heavier. It was when my brother James said he was getting married, I confessed to my cousins how worried I was about how I would look in the photos. I had looked into gastric-band surgery, but I didn’t really want to go down that route.
Hannah told me about a friend who had lost over 6 Stones at Slimming World and said I should give it a go. I walked into my local Slimming World group, convinced it wouldn’t work, but when my Consultant started explaining how much food we could eat, something clicked. I can do this!! In my 1st week I lost 7 lbs. I went home and started cooking Slimming World recipes straight away. Richard thought it was great because we were still eating loads and we both started losing weight straightaway. I then started doing workout DVDs and it made me want to start exercising more. My dad is a keen runner and when I mentioned to him that I’d like to start, he was very encouraging. On my first go I could only run a few metres before I was out of breath, so I walked for a bit and started again. Gradually, my fitness levels increased and the weight dropped off even faster. By the time of James’s wedding, I had lost 6Stones and when my family saw me, several of them cried. My confidence has soared. I used to walk around with my head down, imagining people thinking, ‘She’s so lazy and unhealthy.’ Now, I walk with my head held high. It’s made a difference to my working life, too – I’m more approachable and I got a promotion. When we took a family holiday to Turkey, I felt so good lying by the pool in my swimming costume and I now have lots of new, colourful dresses in my wardrobe. I love going to group every week and the encouragement I get is fantastic- from recipes to swapping tips,to helping each other through challenging times. I have met many lovely friends and I have continued to lose weight.I have now lost over 11 Stones and my life couldn’t be more different. I tuck into loads of fruit, fat-free yogurts,
soups, filling salads and pasta dishes during the day, and when I get home, I go to the gym or go for a run before eating one of the meals I’ve batch-cooked over the weekend – often chicken curry or Lasagne.I can still even enjoy glasses of wine and Richard enjoys a beer. I’m going to be a bridesmaid at my sister’s wedding soon. Buying clothes for special occasions used to end in tears – not any more. Now I love trying them on.....and wearing them! Local Slimming World Consultants, Helen, Patricia, Sharron and Sinead all agree, ‘Helen is another great example of a Slimming World transformation story. Success isn’t achieved by setting impossible standards or through humiliation, it’s achieved through caring, compassion and respect for you. You decide what size you want to be and we’ll help you get there, where you want to be. At Slimming World we work together to help you look and feel great – body, mind and soul.’ You can make your festive weight loss wishes come true. Everyone’s welcome at our groups. Now is the perfect time to join and drop a dress / suit size or 2 in time for Christmas.”

‘All Change For Charlotte’ after losing over 5st Student life sent Charlotte Fellows’ weight soaring. Now she’s lost 5st 10lbs, fired up her fitness and bagged herself a gorgeous new boyfriend into the bargain.
“For years I was too self-conscious about my size to speak to boys. I assumed that even if I did talk to them, they wouldn’t be interested in me – especially as sometimes lads would comment on how big I was. While these strangers didn’t seem to have a problem talking about my weight, it was more difficult for my family. I think I would have listened to my mum if she’d told me how worried she was, but she kept quiet because she didn’t want to hurt my feelings. She knew how low I felt and, understandably, didn’t want to make me feel worse. “The bigger I got, the more my confidence shrank. I found clothes shopping embarrassing. I’d go into Topshop and compare myself with other girls trying on their skimpy outfits, then get upset in the changing room because I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. The worst time was when I was on a trip to Las Vegas with my mum; we went to Urban Outfitters for a treat and I couldn’t find a single item of clothing that fitted me. I sobbed and sobbed, thinking ‘I’m 19 – this is the time of my life when I should be looking my best and instead I feel humiliated about my body’. “It was when I got to university that I really started to struggle. The main problem was my nightlife. I ate OK during the day, then I’d go out with friends and at 3am, after a few drinks, we’d all buy a takeaway. Ironically, I always chose a diet cola with my burger and fries! The late-night extras soon had an impact and by the end of my first year, the weight had really piled on. “When I saw an old high-school picture of myself on Facebook, I was devastated. I looked much slimmer and now, here I was, two years older and 3st heavier. I was trying to squeeze into size-14 clothes and refusing to admit I really needed a size 16. I immediately began calorie counting and, although I lost a few pounds, I knew I needed more support to make a real difference. That’s when my aunt suggested Slimming World. She had lost 3st in six months by Food Optimising and encouraged me to give it a go. The start of the ‘new’ me “I made losing weight my New Year’s resolution for 2015. I’d dipped in and out of fad diets in the past, like the fruit detox where I ate nothing but grapes for three days and a no-carbs plan that was just horrendous!
Now, I was determined to slim down sensibly and for good. I joined a S.W group at first and my lovely mum came along for support. Then, when I returned to university for the spring term, I went to my local group with a friend. I remember reading through all the books my aunt had given to me and having this feeling that Slimming World was an opportunity to change my life. All I had to do was stick to the plan and I’d see results. “At group for the first time, it struck me that everyone seemed like friends; there was no competition, just support. I’d been nervous because, at 19, I thought I might be the youngest there. I needn’t have worried – not only were there other girls in their teens, I also discovered the whole group shared similar feelings and experiences, whatever their age. One member had put on a couple of pounds that week and not one person judged her; they understood exactly how it felt. I immediately felt safe from humiliation and knew I could come back the next week whatever happened. The encouragement from the other members and my Consultant has been amazing. “I lost 4lbs in my first week and a stone in the first month. I felt on top of the world when I got my Club 10 award soon after! I’ve found the plan really easy to stick to, even with a student budget (and lifestyle!). For a start, I always make sure I have plenty of quick ‘go-to’ food in the fridge, like sliced ham and chicken and hard-boiled eggs, so I’m never tempted to buy an unhealthy snack or fast food. I also plan my main meals for the week and build lots of flexibility into my menus. I’ll buy lean mince and think of two meals I could cook with it – that way I can make lasagne if I don’t fancy the chilli I’ve scheduled. And I’ve learned to be clever about when I go grocery shopping, hitting the supermarket in the evening when more expensive fresh food like fish or lean meat is reduced. That way I can snap up a bargain to cook with or freeze for another day. “Knowing the Syn value of foods has completely changed my eating habits. Before I joined Slimming World, it never occurred to me to worry about that extra beer or glass of wine – in my head, drinks didn’t really count. It was the same with those late-night takeaways – I didn’t see them as real food, so I could almost pretend I hadn’t had them. Now I’m a lot more conscious of what I’m eating – and drinking. I go for low-Syn vodka and diet mixer instead of large glasses of wine; that way my Syns stretch further and I enjoy myself more knowing I’ll still have a loss at my next
weigh-in. Eating out is as enjoyable as it was before – I just choose more wisely from the menu, ordering simply cooked meat and lots of veg, rather than bread, pasta and creamy sauces. “My high point was going on holiday and losing half a stone! I’d been island-hopping around Greece for three weeks and had loads of fun – I just made smart food choices. I’d eat salad for lunch, then grilled chicken for dinner and I’d use my Syns for something sweet afterwards. By August 2015, eight months after joining Slimming World, I’d reached my original target of 10st. I was a size 12, but still felt I could lose more, so I set a new target weight of 9st. The first time I had a gain, it really got to me. I put on 2lbs earlier this year and felt so defeated – why now, when I’d never gained before? I decided to go back to basics and really commit to sticking to plan 100 per cent. Sure enough, the weight came off again the following week. These days, I’m averaging a loss of ½lb a week. It can be frustrating that it’s not more, especially as I had such a flying start, but the numbers on the scales are still going in the right direction and I’m so close to target, nothing is going to stop me now. A summer of success “When I was younger I’d play football and go to the gym, but that all stopped when I went to university. Now, thanks to Body Magic, I’ve rediscovered my love of fitness. I go to the gym five or six times a week and I also go running. My goal is to be able to run 10km – I’m up to 7km now. When I first joined the gym, my mum took me shopping for some exercise gear and it was mortifying; the leggings were incredibly tight and all the tops seemed so clingy! I knew I couldn’t let that stop me, though, so I’d head to the gym at 8pm when it was quieter and fewer people could see me. I muddled along at first, not sure what I was doing, then gradually gained confidence. Now I’m happy in my Lycra and I don’t care who sees me! I’ve now got a wonderful boyfriend, Josh, who I met just after losing my first stone. We’ve been together for a year and a bit and he jokes he’s an unofficial member because he eats all the same meals. Without Slimming World, I would never have had the courage even to speak to Josh, let alone get to know him well enough to form a relationship. We both lived in Spain for a couple of months this summer and I still Food Optimised – even with all the temptation of icecream and tapas. Inspired by my Slimming World journey, I’m starting a second degree in nutrition next year
Charlotte Fellows
– I can’t wait. I always hoped that losing weight would boost my confidence and my belief in myself – what I didn’t expect was that it would do the same for my love life! Sinead Twells, local Slimming World Consultant, says, ‘Charlotte has done really well. She has really inspired lots of members with her amazing story, her benefits have been fantastic. Our generous eating plan makes slimming easier than you ever thought possible! Instead of telling you what you can and can’t eat, Food Optimising puts you in control. You don’t even need to worry about weighing all your food, counting points or monitoring every mouthful – it’s so liberating! It’s simply losing weight with NO hunger EVER!’

After two years asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to 17 year old Eimear McGettigan. Where in Strabane did you grow up? I grew up in Patrick street before we moved to Ashbrook when I was three.
A fond childhood memory Waking up early every Saturday morning to watch the RTE movie with my dad. Another great memory is watching ‘The Quiet Man’ around Christmas with the family.
A Favourite holiday destination? Bundoran, of course!
A favourite film and why? The classic ‘Darby O’Gill And The Little People’, as it reminds me of happier times.
Favourite kind of music? Anything ranging from The Coronas to The Dubliners.
Favourite food? Anything as long as I don’t have to make it!
Who or what makes you laugh? My dad, he gets me every time!
An ideal night out? Anywhere as long as the music’s good and my friends are there.
An ideal night in? Chilled night in, watching ‘Back To The Future’.
Something you love about Strabane? The people, everyone is so friendly and you always meet and have the craic with someone you know.
Something about Strabane that you miss? The Town Hall, although I didn’t get to experience it. I heard it was brilliant craic, and I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed it.
Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future? Something for the young people of Strabane to do, maybe bowling or paint balling.
Someone who makes you proud to be from Strabane and why? My mum. She always made me be proud to come from Strabane. She always taught us to respect the people in the town, and she always made me appreciate where I came from.

‘Marathon man’ Pat O’Loughlin completes his 35th dublin city marathon, aged 78 It’s a cliché because it’s true: you can’t keep a good man down! Castlederg ‘Marathon Man’ Pat O’Loughlin completed his 35th Dublin City Marathon on October 26 at the age of 78. By Michael Ferry It marks a brave return to the gruelling 26.2 mile epic run for the veteran sportsman after he was forced to call a halt to his preparations for last year’s marathon to undergo treatment for prostate cancer. Once again, Pat was running to raise funds for MS research and up to last year was the only runner from Northern Ireland, and one of 26 runners worldwide, to have completed all 34 Dublin marathons. The ‘Herald’ caught up once again with the retired Jeweller, who was awarded an MBE and MS Silver Star for his charity work, on the Tuesday after the marathon to find out how his comeback went. “Prior to the marathon I was a bit unsure if I’d make it to the finish line this time. They’re always very tough to complete and I was running most of it at a pretty gentle pace. I also had a hip injury on the left leg but strangely it meant that the jogging motion was easier on me than the walking motion. Thankfully the joints and muscles held up and I struggled on and got there in the end. At this stage I wasn’t too concerned about my time; just being able to complete the marathon is enough for me now,” explained Pat. To be fully prepared for what lay ahead Pat had a lot of help from his physio, Brian McHugh, who helped with some acupuncture and stretching exercises. He even had Pat out running the day before the marathon. On the day of the main event Pat was joined by his long-term running partner, Jenny Mc Page 2
Menamin and Pat’s son, Ciaran, who is currently based in Dublin. “As always Jenny has been a great support in getting me ready for the marathons. Her husband, Sean, was our back-up on the bike, always at hand with drinks and other much needed supplements along the way. You’re not normally allowed bikes on these marathons but because we were at the end where it had thinned out a good bit the marshals didn’t mind as much,” explained Pat. Since we were speaking to Pat just a mere 24 hours after the marathon we naturally wondered how he was feeling that day. “I’m in need of a bit of WD40, I think,” he laughed. “I’m also very grateful to Ryan Bogle of S&K Sports here in Castlederg, who kindly sponsored me with a lovely pair of trainers, which were actually the same colour as my jersey.”
Eamon Coughlan After the race, Pat enjoyed a conversation with Senator, and Irish Athletics legend, Eamonn Coghlan. “He spent some time chatting to some of us older runners. It was great to chat to him as I had a great poster of his win in the 5000 metres at the 1983 World Championships. The poster captures that moment when he passed Dmitriy Dmitriyev of the Soviet Union. He could see that Dmitriyev was tiring and he had a big smile on his face as he was passing him. He was certainly a great athlete in his time.”
Pat O’Loughlin (78) who completed his 35th Dublin Marathon at the age of 78, included in the picture is his son Ciaran and Jenny McMenamin.
Since he started running the marathon in aid of MS research 15 years ago Pat has raised over £60,000, and funds continue to flood in following his gallant efforts this year once again. “People continue to be very generous and I’ve been very lucky to get to do as many marathons as I have. It was obviously a tough year but the
Linda Duncan’s 50th at Murphy’s on the Green
medical staff here in Castlederg have been a great support to me. As regards my health, I’m just after doing 26.2 miles so I hope that’s a good sign. I’ll still be out there doing some light walking and then, who knows, we’ll see how the muscles hold up next year,” he concluded.
