TO CRIZAL FORTE LENSES THEY’RE SAFER FOR DRIVING IN THE DARK!
Avoid glare when driving at night!
ORDINARY LENS
The nights are starting to draw in already and we’ll soon be driving in the dark more often. It presents problems with glare for many drivers.
CRIZAL LENS
The glare is caused by the light oncoming bright car lamps bouncing off our face and eyes onto the back surface of the lens and then back into our eyes. There’s also a myriad of reflections going on inside the lens, between the front and back surfaces, that build up to cause a blinding glare. Crizal lenses from Essilor banish these problematic reflections and the glare that goes with them, to make driving at night a great easier for you - and safer too. Crizal lenses defeat all the 5 enemies of clear vision.
Reflections Stopping reflections make your lenses appear transparent, meaning your finished spectacles look a lot better. So they do more than stop glare. Smudges and water Smudges are caused by tiny droplets of oils clinging to the lens. The surface of Crizal lenses is so slippery that oil and water can’t get a grip and are much more likely to slip off the lens. It makes them easier to clean and resistant to fogging. Scratches Crizal lenses have a really tough surface that mean they are extra resistant to scratches, so they look good for longer. Reflections Cleaning can create static that attracts dust Crizal lenses are designed to repel dust too. Call McGovern Opticians on 028 71 882506 to hear more about these amazing lenses!

The Quality of our Eye Examination
Gormley Opticians
www.gormleyopticians.com
Visual Field Test
A visual field test is a method of measuring the entire scope of your vision…not just your central vision (ie what your looking straight at) but also your peripheral (side) vision.
The Autorefractor
The autorefractor takes an electronic measurement of how well your eyes focus and gives a read out of your approximate prescription for our optometrists to use. If we do not have a record of your current prescription, our focimeters can read it from your glasses so that it can be compared with the findings of your eye examination by the optometrist.
Tonometry
Tonometry is a method of measuring the pressure in your eye… the intraocular pressure (IOP). An elevated IOP can be dangerous because people with varying degrees of IOP elevation may develop damage to the optic nerve.
Retinal Photography
As part of your eye test at Gormley Opticians we offer retinal photography - a digital picture of the inside of your eye. Over time, capturing these images creates a permanent record of your eye health so we can monitor any changes closely.
During and After your Eye Examination
We will answer your queries during the eye examination, and also explain our findings. If we consider that you would have clearer vision with a change of prescription or new glasses, we will explain why and recommend the best options. At Gormley Opticians, we care about getting the right glasses for you, both for your vision and to make you feel good.
FREE EYECARE
Due to age, medical condition or income level you may be entitled to a free eye examination and/or financial help towards the cost of your glasses. To help establish if you are entitled to any help, check on the ‘Products and Services’ section of our website…www.gormleyopticians.com

TOP LADY GAGA TRIBUTE RETURNS TO SMUGGLERS INN
bar & restaurant
Next Saturday 5th November Europe’s leading Lady Gaga tribute show featuring Katrina L. will be appearing once again at the Smugglers Inn, Clady. Last time round she wowed the local punters and huge demand has brought here back to you! Lady Gaga is a theatrical dance-pop singer/songwriter who created a buzz for herself in the New York underground before making her major-label debut with Interscope Records in 2008. Influenced by flamboyant glam rockers such as David Bowie and Queen, as well as ’80s dance-pop like Madonna and Michael Jackson, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta grew up in Manhattan, where she attended private school and later studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. At age 20 she began working as a songwriter for Interscope Records, where she penned songs for pop acts such as the Pussycat Dolls. She mounted a solo career several years later, releasing her charttopping debut single, “Just Dance,” in early 2008. The 23year old New York singer, known for her outlandish dress sense, topped the all-time chart, with two of her singles. “Poker Face” notched up 779,000 sales on downloads, while “Just Dance”, her first single release in Britain, came third in the chart with 700,000 sales. Katrina L’s tribute to Lady GaGa is sensational, colourful and full of vibrancy. She struts her stuff in a 70-minute jam-packed rendition of the Super Star’s entire catalogue of hit songs. Katrina who is a star of television and radio has captured the very essence of the award winning New York rock Icon. From the tip of her blonde hair to her tattoos, she not only bears a striking resemblance but her astonishingly powerful voice and stage performance is awe-inspiring. Katrina

Weissenfels new WeissSock tyre socks are really convenient to use. Unlike snow chains grip is provided by an all covering textile surface with no metal parts being used. It's big advantages are that, provided there is sufficient hand room to pull them over the top of the tyre, it is extremely quick and simple to fit. There is nothing to chafe around the back of the tyre making them ideal for cars with limited clearances around the wheel. Fitting is also made easier since there is nothing to adjust and they automatically self center as you drive. Since there is no metal chain in contact with the road, the WeissSock is totally smooth running with absolutely no vibrations or noise being apparent and give you the best traction ANY SNOW SOCK will give you in snow.

The latest Tips and Tricks from Cutting Edge Training The latest trends and the hottest treatments and products you need to know about. Our team of leading hair and beauty educators take the pain out of perfection. A THICKER LASH IN A FLASH 'For luxuriant eyelashes, use a flat angled brush to apply mascara along the root of your upper row - to the topside, not underneath. This is where they're at their thickest, and they'll instantly look fuller' NEW WAVE 'For naturally curly hair that tends to look frizzy, mix your curling mousse with a hair conditioner and apply it to your hair. This will give a sleeker look and create more controlled curls' NAILS AU NATUREL 'For beautifully white, stain-free nails rub
them all over with half a fresh lime. Then soak your fingertips in some water with dissolved bicarbonate of soda (or a dissolved denture tablet) for a few minutes. Et voila - gorgeous nails.' THE BLACK LASH BACKLASH 'Use brown mascara on your lower lashes rather than black - even if you use black on the top lashes. A lighter colour on the bottom gives your eyes a lift. Also, line the inside of the eyes with a dark brown liner, as, over time, it will smudge into the lashes resulting in a very sexy eye.' HOW TO USE DRY SHAMPOO 'To ensure that your dry shampoo doesn't make your roots look chalky and grey, spray it on to a paddle hair brush followed by some hairspray, then brush from the roots to the ends.Your hair will instantly look clean and shiny.'
BRUSH UP 'Sweep a long-handled body brush across your limbs and torso, directing strokes towards the heart. A daily brush helps our skin shed waste and toxins, as well as boosting circulation and the lymphatic system. This, in turn, improves skin tone and helps the immune system.' SMOOTH OPERATOR 'If you have frizzy hair but don't like using styling products, squeeze lemon or lime juice in your shampoo and conditioner. The juices are cleansing and high in acidity, which helps to close the hair cuticle. The result? An impossibly smooth and sleek hairdo.' TOP MARKS 'The key to a stylish topknot is to create contrast between the pulled-back hair and the knot itself. The pulled-back hair should be kept sleek and glossy, whereas the knot should be wild and almost "undone".'

Football fans across the north-west are being encouraged to get behind Dergview as the local club prepares for a massive Irn-Bru Cup quarter final. The Castlederg boys will be hoping for another act of giant-killing when they take on Premiership side Ballymena United on November 16th. A last-16 win over famous Belfast club Donegal Celtic has ignited Dergview’s season, and created a real feeling of excitement in the town. Club President Harold Baxter said the team’s cup exploits has given the area a lift: “The mood around the town was brilliant after the last game,” he said. “To think that a wee town like Castlederg could go to Belfast and play a renowned team like Donegal Celtic and come away with a win is some achievement for the area. Football is very important for the community.” The draw has been relatively kind to Dergview and having avoided the big guns of Glentoran, Crusaders and Cliftonville they’ll fancy their chances of an upset when they welcome Ballymena to Darragh Park. Harold hopes his side can take advantage of the home tie, and wants locals to show their support: “Between supporters and players and everything else we have around a thousand people involved with the club in one way or another. I’d be calling on them to come along and give us the support. We have a nice supporters stand down at Darragh Park and there’s everything they need.” He added: “I believe if our boys come with no inferiority and take them on I think we’ll come out well. The manager has them very fit and they’re all playing for each other. There are goal scorers everywhere in the side, and that’s what the game is about.” As a stalwart of the club down the years, Harold admitted he’s thrilled to see the team rubbing shoulders with the big names of Northern Ireland
football: “To see us up along the likes of Linfield and Glentoran is great. Personally, when I was growing up I never thought we’d be up with the like of them,” he said. “After 30 years of service to the local area we’re delighted that we’re making progress. Ultimately we’d like to get into the Premier League and with plenty of support I’ve no doubt we could hold our own.” As well as looking for support from the fans, Harold also had a message for local sport authorities who provide funding: “It’s very important that we get a lot of support from the people that can support us. People like Sport NI, the IFA, local council…It’s very important that people get behind something that is successful. There’s a lot of people involved with us, right across the community. That needs to be looked after.” The quarter final tie against Ballymena United takes place Wednesday November 16th in Darragh Park, Castlederg. Kick-off, 7.30pm.

GUINOT HYDRADERMIE² LIFT The Ultimate ‘Anti-Ageing’ treatment Lifts the Facial Contour and Smoothes Fine Lines! The western world’s attitude to ageing has changed dramatically in recent years and innovations to keep ageing at bay have flooded the market. Consumers are faced with a plethora of anti-ageing options and have to make a decision about what to choose. Fortunately, this decision can be simplified with Guinot professional skincare. With a heritage of over 40 years, Guinot has become synonymous with scientifically-based products and treatments at the forefront of innovation. Hydradermie² Lift is the latest in advanced antiageing professional skincare treatments. This machine-based facial uses cutting-edge technology to treat both the skin and the facial muscles for an immediate ‘lifting’ effect. Designed for skin that shows signs of loss of elasticity, it targets areas where fine lines are most evident – around the eyes, mouth and nose and across the forehead. It also lifts and firms the cheeks, jaw line and neck. Hydradermie² Lift uses the Hydraderm machine, unique to Guinot, which transmits a gentle microcurrent to stimulate facial muscles. The frequency of the microcurrent can be customised to suit each client. The treatment includes exfoliation to remove dead skin cells; lymph drainage to eliminate toxins from the facial muscles and skin
and prepare the skin for muscle stimulation; and muscle stimulation to firm and define the facial contour. The Hydradermie² Lift uses an ultra luxurious gel called Age Logic to attain the maximum anti-ageing benefits. ‘There is an increasing demand for more noninvasive scientific skincare treatments that can give rapid, specific and tangible results,’ comments Guinot Training Development Manager, Emma Wilsdon ‘A single Hydradermie² Lift treatment gives fantastic, immediately-visible results, and over time you experience even better results. A course of treatments really can tone, tighten and improve your appearance.” Hydradermie² Lift is recommended for mature skin as an intensive course of 10-12 treatments over five to six weeks. For the ultimate in results and efficiency, Hydradermie² Lift may be combined with other Guinot treatments (deep-cleansing Hydradermie² or Hydradermie² Age Logic and radiance-boosting Liftosome). GUINOT HYDRADERMIE² LIFT is now available from November at the Beauty Centre, Strabane. Call Carolyn now for bookings or info at 028 71 382444

£35!
GUINOT HYDRADERMIE² Double the Ionisation, Double the Results! Doubling in comfort, relaxation and ease, Guinot is proud to reveal Hydradermie², a newly enhanced 1 hour facial, designed to leave the skin even more radiant, hydrated and youthful! In 1963, Rene Guinot finalised his first breakthrough, the Cathiodermie, later to become known as the Hydradermie. It was an advancement that would not only establish Guinot as a brand, but one that would become a key moment in skincare. The Hydradermie was the first facial to use mild galvanic and high frequency currents with specially formulated plant-based products to deep cleanse and oxygenate the cells. Soon after, the prestigious George V Hotel beauty salon in Paris introduced its VIP clients to Hydradermie treatments. This became the beginning of the brand’s influence and reputation. Technological Developments The traditional Hydradermie facial was limited to Single Ionisation in which only the positively charged ingredients would penetrate deep into the skin. The two positive rollers would repel the positive ions into the skin and attract the negative ions to the surface. Therefore the negative ingredients would only provide a superficial effect. Today’s technological developments give Hydradermie2 double the results due to Double Ionisation. The creation of two new electrodes, one positive and one negative, allows for complete penetration of both the positive and negative ions.
The addition of a negative roller means that the negative bar no longer needs to be held. The current is now localised to the face and the ergonomic design of the rollers allows for a 38% increase in ionisation. Hydradermie2 features new gels for dry and mature skin and additional negatively charged ingredients, such as DNA and Vitamin C. The Paraben-free gels have been reformulated to a comfortable serum texture, with a uniform fragrance for a pleasant experience. With Age Logic devotees in mind Guinot has created Serum Gel Age Logic, containing ATP, specifically for the new Hydradermie2 Age Logic treatment, formerly known as Hydradermie Plus. Procedure Having cleansed the skin, the first application of rollers lasts five minutes, with the positive ions penetrating on one side of the face and the negative ions on the other. After five minutes the rollers are switched allowing both negative and positive ions to diffuse the active ingredients deep down to the sebaceous glands. The skin now absorbs negative and positive active ingredients, removing impurities and toxins. Double Ionisation penetrates the active ingredients quicker and deeper into the skin with double the results. Hydradermie² is available from November at the Beauty Centre, Strabane Tel: 028 71382444.

Meet our inspirational Man of the Year 2011 In just nine months Neil Richardson has lost a jaw-dropping 12st 10lb to reach his target and transform his life forever. Read his touching story here… “At school I was bigger than my schoolmates and I had a large appetite. My weight gain wasn’t triggered by a specific event – I just had really bad eating habits. From fried breakfasts to late night takeaways, pastries and sausage rolls to creamy curries – I never stopped eating and rarely exercised. “I’ve always been known as ‘Fat Neil’ – it wasn’t an insult, it was just who I was. I wasn’t really unhappy about my weight, in fact it was probably down to enjoying myself a little too much on nights out with the lads, which usually involved plenty of beer and a kebab or burger on the way home.” “Although I didn’t suffer with any serious health problems, I struggled to keep up with my children. The final straw came on a family holiday to Wales when a little boy refused to play with my daughter because he didn’t want to sit with ‘a big fat man’. Hearing that and seeing my little girl’s face as her eyes

“I still bump into people in the street who I haven’t seen for a while. Most don’t recognise me and can’t believe my transformation. Recently, I went to a fancy dress party but I wasn’t wearing a costume. One of my mates spotted me and shouted
‘Look! It’s Fat Neil and he’s come dressed as a thinner bloke!’ The great thing is that this isn’t a costume, it’s really me and I am that thinner bloke!”

The Toy Hearts Sat Nov 5th
After playing extensively on the international rock circuit in the mid 90’s with “Hotwire” & “Crush”, recording several albums and sharing the stage with artists such as Victory, Thunderhead & Dare Rob moved to Ireland in 2001 to work as a studio and session musician. That was then. Now he’s back with a new album “Rock’n’Roll Circus” - a reflective but modern influenced crossover between the roots of late 80’s and early 90’s melodic rock. Think Bon Jovi with a Nickelback kick, infused with his own signature - a powerfully stomping rhythm guitar section, addictive keyboards and catchy melody lines sung by lead vocalist, guitarist and ‘RockDoc’ Rob Mancini. The album was recorded between September 2010 and February 2011 at Rob’s GMG Studio One in Ireland and features 12 tracks including a cover version of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”:

The Toy Hearts are one of the UK’s hottest acoustic acts right now, their style of music neatly placing them at the forefront of the resurgence of interest in folk and Americana music. Fronted by sisters Hannah (mandolin) and Sophia (guitar) accompanied by banjo/dobro, bass and fiddle, the bands draws upon the genres of Bluegrass, Western Swing and Gypsy Jazz for inspiration. By combining original song writing, sweet sister harmonies, hard driving rhythms and energetic performances, The Toy Hearts have developed a truly unique sound that leaves their audience breathless and ready for more. Recent months have seen The Toy Hearts touring across the UK, Europe and USA. Their 3rd album ‘Femme Fatale’ was recorded in Nashville Tennessee earlier this year and released in September.

Kevin McAleer is one of the founding fathers of modern standup. He’s perhaps best known among those of a certain age for his frankly brilliant Nighthawks appearances. Christine with her mum & dad at The Culloden Hotel after receiving her awards.
One of the reasons for the success of the coffee shop is the daily homemade food. “We now have a regular client base, most of which are passing customers en route to the City, customers attending the hospital (altnagelvin) for appointments that come from as far away as Strabane, Omagh, Sion Mills, Enniskillen and further afield.” Christine attended the Culloden Hotel with her parents at her side to receive a very special award. She was one of the finalists for the VQ Learner of the Year award 2010 for her success in completing a small business financial management level 3 diploma and successfully opening a new business on the back this. “Being shortlisted was a surprise in itself. It was only when I attended the Culloden it became clear that I had actually qualified as one of the 14 finalists. I have
recently completed a Food Allergen Catering Award together with Nutrition and Special Diets Course. This now enables me to cater for a wide range of dietary requirements such as Coeliac or Gluten free diets which are now very much common within our society. I can now offer a full range of Gluten free food, from all day breakfast, lunch, soups and snacks and breads. I am very proud of this achievement and very proud of the last 2 years hard work. We provide a very welcoming atmosphere in a beautifully decorated coffee shop. We have wonderful customers who complement our homemade food always.” Christine added, “We have now launched our Friday Nite Bistro Nites. Tables can be booked in advance between 6pm and 9pm. We offer a full Bistro menu at reasonable prices. We also offer a ‘Bring Your Own Wine Deal’ were corkage charges are automatically donated to the Foyle Hospice, a charity very close to my own heart and that of my customers also.” Pure & Simple is situated on the main Derry to Strabane Road behind the Methodist Church on the Main Victoria Road beside Perfections Hair Salon…we have ample parking and disabled access and toilet facilities.

‘Return of the Gunhawks’ Premiere at Eclipse Cinema ‘The Return of the Gunhawks’, is the first known western film to ever be filmed in Ireland taking in scenes from across Co. Tyrone and Co. Donegal and is the film sequel to the western film, ‘Gunhawks’, which was filmed back in the year of 1974 using only a hand-held small super 8 millimetre camera. The mastermind behind these two locally made westerns is local Castlederg man, Tommy Maguire, who wrote, produced and directed the two westerns. The highly anticipated movie had it’s premiere at Eclipse Cinema, Lifford/ Strabane at the start of the month and the cast of the movie along with locals turned out in force to support the locally produced movie! Our lensman was there to capture everyone looking their best for the big local premiere!

O’Hanlon rides again, while the Villains score a Classic One of Strabane’s finest singersongwriters and guitarists, Pete O’Hanlon has returned with his long-awaited new solo album, ‘Simple Equation’. It is O’Hanlon’s first solo outing since his 1999 album ‘Trick of Time’. With his guitar playing in big demand, finding the time to focus on his own project has been difficult for the Strabane man down through the years. Recently he has worked with others such as former Energy Orchard singer Bap Kennedy and Derry singer-songwriter Roy Arbuckle. In the past O’Hanlon has also performed with iconic figures such as Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott. Prior to this he cut his teeth in the Showband circuit with local dancehall act Double Vision. As a lead guitarist he has worked with the likes of Irish folk group De Dannan, Shana Morrison (daughter of Van) and Dolores Keane and her brother Sean. He also recorded and toured with ‘Van the Man’ himself, playing on Morrison’s 1997 album ‘The Healing Game’, which many regarded as Morrison’s finest album of the 90s. He also shared the stage with Morrison at the City Hall in Belfast in 1995 as part of the events celebrating US President Bill Clinton’s visit to the city. After finally switching his phone off, O’Hanlon has got back to his main focus of the new album
Peter O’Hanlon back in playing at the ‘Strabane Rocks for Charity’ concert back in 1986.
and it has been well worth the wait. Blues rock sits comfortably beside subtle acoustic tracks, and O’Hanlon is in fine voice throughout, marking himself as not only one of our finest guitarists
but as a lyricist of bite, wit, heart and substance. ‘Bad History’ recalls a land broken by its past, while ‘Move Along Raytheon’ is a direct and to the point sing-along message of self-explanatory local significance, featuring backing vocals by Derry singer Tina McLaughlin, among others. There is also a stunning version of ‘That’s How Every Empire Falls’, written by Knoxville, Tennessee singer-songwriter-poet RB Morris, who performed with O’Hanlon at a special show at Strabane Unplugged in 2007. ‘Simple Equation’ has been long overdue and now sits proudly in a record collection that has had a space reserved for it for a very long time. The album itself says it all: a circle + spokes = the wheel. You know it makes sense! Meanwhile, Derry’s young pop upstarts the Wonder Villains continue to gather momentum and have just released a new single, ‘Zola’. In keeping with the pop culture references that have coloured the band’s output so far, the new single is a reference to former Chelsea footballer and ex-West Ham United manager, Gianfranco Zola - but don’t hold anything of that against the band or, indeed, Mr Zola. The sporting link has been enough to see the song already get used on Sky’s ‘Soccer AM’ programme and gain airplay on Radio One. With school exams ‘so last summer’, the Wonder Villains, who are Eimear Coyle on vocals and bass, Cheylene Murphy on keyboards and vocals, Ryan McGroarty on guitar and Kieran Coyle on
drums, have now set up base in Belfast and are focused full-time on the band. They are currently embarking on a tour with General Fiasco and have completed their debut album, which was recorded in Strabane with guitarist and producer Peter Doherty at the desk. If the new single is anything to go by, the debut album promises to be a pop classic packed with three-minute perfect gems. ‘Zola’ has a chorus that cruises along with a bassline that would make Blondie green with envy. It is now available on iTunes. Check it out for yourself and fail in your bid not to be seduced by such sweet pop music.
REM Remembered So REM have split after 31 years together. As addressed in last month’s ‘Herald’, the Athens, Georgia group were at the forefront of an Alternative Rock movement in 1980s USA that would go on to influence the mainstream for most of the 90s. However, the announcement of their split came as no surprise for many. This year saw the band release their 15th studio album, ‘Collapse into You’, which was a strong collection capturing the multiple musical facets that have made up REM down through the years, and while it is a fine album it’s one that lacks surprise. There were numerous signs throughout year that this, indeed, was to the REM’s swansong. ‘Collapse into Now’ was the final album of a lucrative recording deal that REM signed with Warner Brothers in 1996 (a deal worth a reported US$80 million, at the time the most expensive recording contract in history). There was to be no tour this year. In recent interviews not one member of the band made reference to the band’s future, which was perhaps the most blatant indication that this was REM’s endgame. Despite the predictability of it all, it nevertheless marks the end of one of the most important rock bands of the last 30 years. They formed in the bohemian college town of Athens, Georgia

in 1980 when record store clerk and vinyl obsessive Peter Buck, along with a regular vinyl sniffer at the store called Michael Stipe, met up with University of Georgia students Bill Berry and Mike Mills at a party. Within four months they played together for the first time at a mutual friend’s birthday party held in a converted Episcopal church. Seven years later they had five studio albums under their belt, each one layered in a peculiar punk rock spirit mixed with an exclusive Southern eccentricity. While the musical traits on albums such as ‘Murmur’, ‘Reckoning’, ‘Fables of the Reconstruction’, ‘Life’s Rich Pageant’ and ‘Document’ were not unfamiliar, no-one had thrown those ideas together in such a way before. REM arrived making mysterious yet magnetic guitar music. It was like Punk got lost down south and crawled out of a swamp
slightly better read. Being signed to the Independent label IRS gave REM the freedom to do as they pleased creatively, which was something that was becoming increasingly rare in the post-Michael Jackson ‘Thriller’ American market. Songs like ‘Welcome to the Occupation’, ‘Exhuming McCarthy’ and ‘Cuyahoga’ were powerfully politicised stabs at the Reagan administration and many feared that the band were committing commercial suicide. Ironically a bitter song of betrayal, the often miss-interpreted ‘The One I Love’ alongside ‘It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)’ nevertheless marked REM’s arrival into mainstream culture in 1987 through a most unconventional and admirable of doors. In 1988 Warner Brothers came knocking
and REM had the leverage to call their own shots. This was best exemplified in 1991 when the band released their seventh album, ‘Out of Time’. Following their successful ‘Green’ World Tour of 1989, their next album was certain to guarantee global status, if of course they ‘played the game’. For the followup to ‘Green’ the band handed Warner Brothers an acoustic album, which featured an unfashionable mandolin guitar led single (‘Losing My Religion’), two songs where bassist Mike Mills would take lead vocals (‘Near Wild Heaven’ and ‘Texarkana’), one song with no words (‘Endgame’), a song where Michael Stipe talks the verses (‘Belong’) and a tongue-in-cheek children’s song called ‘Shiny Happy People’. When submitting their new off-beat album they also hit Warner Brothers with the knock-out punch – they were not going to tour the album! It should’ve been the end for REM as we knew it but ‘Out of Time’ went on to sell ten million copies, ‘Losing My Religion’ became an American mainstream classic and the band became superstars while simply sitting on their front porch in Athens, Georgia. The acoustic element remained for the band’s follow-up in 1992, ‘Automatic for the People’, which despite yet another clunky instrumental in the middle and despite its dark lyrical themes went on to be an even bigger global hit than ‘Out of Time’. The band, again, opted to stay home. In 1994 they began to roar again with the rusty and entertainingly clumsy ‘Monster’ album. They then embarked on a World Tour
for the first time in six years, descending memorably on Slane Castle in July 1995. Just prior to Slane, disaster struck for the band in Switzerland, when drummer Bill Berry collapsed on stage during a show after suffering a brain aneurysm. Fortunately he recovered and rejoined the band for the rest of the tour but the scare simply mounted more doubt about life on the road for the home bird drummer and he officially left the band in October 1997. For some, REM’s peak was during this period in the mid-90s. While they never reached those heights again commercially, they did reinvent themselves positively as a trio post-1997, venturing into experimental electronic waters on 1998’s ‘Up’ album and lush atmospherics on 2001’s ‘Reveal’. ‘Around The Sun’ in 2004 was perhaps a sign that the well was running dry. However 2008’s ‘Accelerate’, with its simplistic urgency, was a loud clarification that this three legged-dog was still a dog. This year’s ‘Collapse into Now’ album has now proven to be the final encore. Unwilling to be a greatest hits cabaret show, REM have bowed out with dignity and the integrity that has made them a band to inspire anyone who is brave enough to step into the ugly world of the music business. They showed with their own self-belief and determination that you can do it your way and on your own terms regardless of what some moron in a suit, who’ll probably be out of job before Christmas anyway, will tell you. You can get there from here. REM will always be proof of that!

STRABANE’S NEW CYCLING INSTRUCTOR GETS MINISTERIAL APPROVAL Strabane’s new cycling instructor Jean McGinley, received ministerial approval at a ceremony in Derry this month, as she received the National Standard Cycling Instructor training certificates from Danny Kennedy, Minister of the Department for Regional Development (DRD). Jean McGinley was chosen by charity Sustrans to take on the training as one of twelve cyclists from communities right across Northern Ireland. The training has been funded by DRD and the Northern and Western Health and Social Care Trusts. Each community is benefiting from a lottery-funded project, developing new walking and cycling routes that are breaking down the barriers to making everyday journeys without needing to rely on a car. The DRD approved funding for the instructor training, to help new and returning cyclists to make the most of the facilities on offer. Jean McGinley said, “As someone who has been cycling for some time, I’m delighted now to have the opportunity to pass on skills to others of all ages and abilities in Strabane, helping them feel more comfortable on the roads but also to take advantage of these new routes.” Minister Danny Kennedy added: “Cycling is fun, good for us and a very sustainable mode of travel, so I’m delighted that more people across Northern Ireland are going to feel more comfortable cycling regularly as a result of this training. In Strabane a new bridge over the River Mourne will provide the centerpiece of a scheme providing walking and cycling routes between communities in the town. Sustrans Director in Northern Ireland, Steven Patterson, said it was great news for people in Strabane: “Thanks to Jean McGinley, more people in the town are going to be able to feel comfortable on their bikes and be able to take advantage of the new route. This is going to make a real difference to how people make their everyday journeys in Strabane.”

Farewell party for retiring priest
Parishioners and friends turned out to sanctuary light. pay tribute to retiring priest Fr Joseph Bishop Lagan and Monsignor McBride both spoke highly of Fr O’Connor and wished him many years O’Connor in Plumbridge this month. A concert was held in the parish hall to mark the end of a 16 year spell as parish priest of Upper Badoney. Bishop Lagan and Monsignor Peter McBride were in attendance as pupils from the two local primary schools - St Peter’s, Plumbridge and St Brigid’s, Cranagh – and 10 other local acts provided entertainment in the way of poetry, Irish dancing, traditional music, and song. The retiring cleric received several presentations on the night, including a special tabernacle, and a
of health and happiness in his retirement, a sentiment echoed by Joe McGurk who was MC for the night. The highlight of the evening came as Fr O’Connor himself took to the stage and after expressing his gratitude for his send-off, gave a rendition of Galway Bay, for which he received a standing ovation. A warm welcome and best wishes were also extended to incoming parish priest, Fr Brian Donnelly.
