Strabane Prepares For a Ghoulishly Entertaining Halloween Over the past number of years Strabane has come to life on Halloween night and that tradition is set to continue this year with a day and evening packed with fun-filled activities and top quality live entertainment in Strabane town centre.
BUTCHER STREET, LIFFORD TEL: 00353 74 91 42225
LUCKY 15 ONE WINNER
Strabane District Council has worked in partnership with the Fountain Street/Springhill Community Association to deliver a lively mix that all the family can enjoy. It will all kick off as early as 11am from the Alley Theatre with ‘Witch Grizella’s Trick or Treat Tours’, where children can join Grizella as she takes them through the town to collect Halloween treats, ending up in Strabane Community Library for ghost stories, folk tales, myths and legends
with local storytellers. Fancy dress is welcome and all children must be accompanied by an adult. ‘Witch Grizella’s tour’ will also take place at 2pm for those who missed it earlier. In the Alley Courtyard from 1pm-5pm, those aged eight to 17 are invited to come and join in the ghoulish fun of Zombie Cage Soccer, allowing young people to compete for two minutes in teams of two for prizes. Meanwhile Q102 will be broadcasting live from the town centre from 2pm-6pm. There will also be Halloween treats and games at Café Horizon in the Alley, from 10am-7pm. The fancy dress Halloween parades have become of big feature of the annual event and there will be three of them coming into the town centre from the Derry Road, the ‘Head of the Town’ and McFadden’s Shop in Bridge Street. Book your FREE consultation with Colour and Style Consultant, Victoria Graham! Want new specs but don’t know what shape and colour suits you best? Help is at hand! D. McGovern Opticians have teamed up with rimless manufacturer Silhouette to bring you a style consultation day on Wednesday 7th November 2012. Silhouette eyewear style consultant and trained ‘House of colour’ consultant Victoria Graham will be in attendance for personal FREE consultations. ‘Victoria attended style days in our Enniskillen and Strabane practices in October. We have been lucky enough to get an extra date in November. Our patients who saw her that day were impressed with her skills and advice.’ Explains Donal McGovern Optometrist. Victoria’s consultation begins by analysing skin type, hair type, eye colour, face shape and personality type, using gold and silver cloths together with a selection of multi-coloured silk scarves. Victoria will determine whether the patient’s skin tone is warm or cool, clear or soft. The patient is then shown a sample palette of flattering colours unique to their colouring. Hair and eye colour are key factors in the analysis process, hair colour advice will be given together with the assessment of the patients eye colour this will guide the frame colour selection. At the same time the important issue of the face shape and scale will be assessed to find the ideal frame shape and size to perfectly compliment the face. ‘We are all very excited about getting an extra
Style Day. We know from our previous experience these valuable appointments with Victoria book up very quickly. In fact many have already been taken. However we have a few left but they won’t be about for long so book early.’ Says Wendy Hamilton, Practice Manager at D McGovern Opticians. ‘These consultations are a great opportunity to get a pair of specs that you know suits you perfectly especially if you have a special occasion coming up such as a wedding or graduation. We welcome all patients even those who have never been to us before.’ For more information or to book an appointment please call Wendy on (048) 71882506 or call in to the practice at 20 Castle Street, Strabane. Onwards and upwards for Eyewear Opticians
Proprietor of Eyewear Opticians Diane Faulkner with Laura Mc Donnell (Oprician)
EyeWear Opticians has taken over the provision of Raymond Curran’s eye-care patients. If you have been under Mr Curran’s care, fear not we will call you as soon as possible to make the changeover easy and pleasant experience. All records have been transferred to EyeWear Opticians. Raymond Curran Optometrists have been established in Strabane for over 25 years and would have continued but for the fact that Mr. Curran has been appointed to the role of Assistant Director/Head of Optometry of the Health and Social Care Board for Northern Ireland, a role which prevents Mr. Curran from continuing as a full-time optometrist. “While exciting challenges lie ahead for myself, it is with a heavy heart that I have had to relinquish my day to day role within the Strabane community. Fortunately EyeWear have agreed to continue looking after my many loyal friends and patients.” Mr. Curran said. Speaking on behalf of EyeWear Opticians,
Ryan McGrath said “At EyeWear, we have always aimed to provide the highest standard of care for all our patients and to be entrusted with the care of Mr. Curran’s patients is a great honour. We also look forward to Mr. Curran assisting us by continuing to test within EyeWear on a part-time visiting role.” EyeWear will be contacting all of Mr. Curran’s patients individually in the near future to explain the changes in greater detail, but in the meantime anyone requiring an eye exam nation can contact EyeWear Opticians and take advantage of the offer of a FREE eyetest for everyone. EyeWear Opticians are located at 44 Main Street, Strabane, directly opposite Gray’s Printers. Telephone (028) 71 88 66 83 to book an appointment.

Less is more for local Sion Mills group ‘Woman of the Year’
EDITORIAL
8 Stone lighter in 11 months! After losing 8st and winning a local slimming competition, the only thing that’s big about Lisa is her beaming smile. Lisa Mohan, from Strabane, lost weight with her local Slimming World group in Sion Mills and has dropped 8 Stones in just 11 months. Her transformation hasn’t gone unnoticed as Lisa has just been named the Sion Mills group’s overall Woman of the Year 2012. Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are already severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes for themselves and their families. Lisa joined Slimming World in mid November 2011 after becoming increasingly unhappy with her weight. She says: “I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable, I’d lose some lbs. then give up and end up back where I started, back to feeling miserable and sad that I couldn’t play with my kids. It’s not that I didn’t want to....I just wasn’t able, I’d start then within minutes I would be gasping for breath and sweating so much. One day whilst talking to my dad, I finally opened up about how sad I as feeling about my weight. He suggested I join Slimming World. His words were encouraging because he told me about his friend who lost 5Stones at the Sino Mills group. My dad kept mentioning it to me, hen one Tuesday I decided to give it a go and join. is completely different, I remember thinking, is it possible to eat so much food and still lose weight, now I know it is! I am never hungry and I’m the happiest I’ve been in years!” The 26-year-old started following Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising eating plan 11 months ago. It’s a healthy eating plan based on satisfying even the largest of appetites so slimmer’s never have to go hungry. Now, Lisa fills up on unlimited amounts of everyday foods like fruit and veg, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice and pulses which are all filling yet naturally low in calories and fat. She’s cut out many of the convenience foods and sugary snacks she used to rely
I Slimming World because..
on. Lisa loves trying out all the delicious slimming recipes she picks up from other members at her Slimming World group. She says: “My family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I still enjoy my weekends and can have a treat throughout the week if I wanted it. I cook for them now like curries and Bolognese and they can’t believe its all healthy food because it tastes so good...” “I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club – they don’t know what to expect. But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support I’ve received from my Consultant Sinead and the rest of the group has been bril-
liant,” adds Lisa. “At first I was really nervous, even scared, especially about stepping on the scales, but straightaway I was made to feel welcome and now it’s like a night out with friends. I couldn’t have done it without them.” “I never dreamt I could achieve so much. I’ve lost 8 Stones, I can hardly believe it! It’s made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life. I’ve got so much more energy and I can do things now that I couldn’t before like playing with my two little girls in the park. My confidence has improved and I don’t feel anxious anymore being out and about. I have just signed up for a beauty course, and then I am doing a nail technician course. Something I’ve always dreamed of doing. The sky is the limit for me now. I feel so proud of myself and how I’ve transformed my life, and being voted the SionMills group’s Woman of the Year 2012 is the icing on the cake.” Sinead, who runs the Sion Mills group, says: “I’m so proud of Lisa. Not only does she look fabulous, she’s improved her health and is bursting with energy. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women reading this to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but I think Lisa shows just what’s possible and what a huge difference losing weight can make.” The Sion Mills Slimming World group is held every Tuesday in The Old School Hall,Sion Mills. If a Tuesday doesn’t suit then why not pop along to Kellie’s group every Monday in The Strabane Cricket Club. To find out more call Sinead on 07835 439 707 or Kellie on 07852 302 534 or why not pop along, a warm welcome awaits you. Strabane Flood: A Visual Documentary 25 years on. On October 21, 1987, after a couple of days of heavy rain the River Mourne burst its banks sending surging flood water into the town centre of Strabane. The town had witnessed minor floods prior to 1987 but not on such a large scale. In the aftermath of the floods the new, bigger, water wall was built. The scenes witnessed 25 years ago and captured below will hopefully never be witnessed again. Photographs courtesy of Damien Devenney and used with his kind permission.

Farewell to the ‘Thin White Duke’?
David Bowie through the years and on right as he is today.
“Not only is it the last show of the tour, but it’s the last show that we’ll ever do. Thank you.” Those were the final words of David Bowie onstage performing as his Ziggy Stardust alter-ego at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on July 3, 1973, just before going into an encore of ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’. The audience were in shock, with many believing this to be the end of Bowie. In truth, they were simply witnessing the demise of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowie as an artist and performer, however, was still not about to go gently into the night and become Davey Jones from Bromley again. On the contrary, LA beckoned and all that it entailed, from the white soul and funk of ‘Diamond Dogs’ and ‘Young Americans’, to the drugfuelled excesses that gave rise to the ‘Thin White Duke’ persona on ‘Station to Station’ (an album he is now on record as saying he can’t remember recording!), to getting clean in West Berlin with Iggy Pop and Brian Eno, to royally holding out the ring on his finger to be kissed by an adoring
New Romantic movement on ‘Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)’, to the chart topping stadium filling “serious moonlight” of ‘Let’s Dance’, to Tin Machine (no comment), to the 90s, where he mixed industrial and electronic sounds on albums such as ‘Outside’ and ‘Earthling’ to an elder statesman sense of civility and good humour, free from any of the masks of old, culminating in the appropriately titled ‘Reality’ album in 2003. After over three decades of searching, perhaps Bowie had found finally found a reality he was content with and perhaps rather enjoys because he hasn’t recorded an album since and it seems, if speculation is correct, that there is to be no more from Bowie. Like Ziggy Stardust before him, he has possibly said his final goodbye. Paul Trynka, who has penned a new book about the singer which is titled ‘Starman’, has said he believes Bowie would only return if he “can deliver something seismic”. Speaking to Spinner magazine, the writer said, “My heart says he’ll come back. But my head says he’s likely not to. I think he would only come back if he thinks he could deliver something that will be seismic. If you pop back into the stage, it’s got to be something that has a big explosion and lots of flashes. It would be a bit of a miracle if he comes back,
but miracles do happen.” Bowie has not played live since 2006, when he sang onstage with Alicia Keys in New York City and has given no indication he is likely to tour again. According to American singer Cat Power, he also declined to sing on her latest album ‘Sun’. In an interview with Mojo Magazine she said, “I asked (Bowie and Iggy), “Please, you guys wanna sing on (‘Nothin’ But Time’)?” David said no cause he was retired and Iggy said yes.” While on tour in 2004 Bowie, then 57, had an emergency operation in Germany to treat “an acutely blocked artery”. He did, however, return to the road and completed the tour with some of the finest shows of his career, with three hour setlists of career spanning classics - perhaps a hint in itself that the end of the road was near. Bowie has never been one for nostalgia and coming out on the road every few years to sing ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘Heroes’ would certainly not motivate him unless there was some new material to offer as well. He has always been an artist steeped in the present with a belief that he had something to contribute. Perhaps he still has that belief in the present but also a belief that it requires no contribution from himself person-
ally. If this is the case then it is to be admired. Too many over-stay their welcome to the point that it becomes cabaret. Bowie would probably frown at such a scenario. At the same time, this is David Bowie we’re talking about. He has some form it’s safe to say when it comes to surprises. Perhaps he is content being Davey Jones, 65, from Bromley, again. However, maybe, just maybe, Davey Jones might have a weird dream some night that immediately wakes him and draws him towards the piano. On the flipside, if this is, indeed, the end of the road, it’s time to celebrate Bowie’s work and look back at arguably the most influential rock star of the last 50 years and the glorious catalogue he has given us. So many artists and bands that have come in his wake owe something to Bowie, from the Pistols to Lady Gaga and everything in between. It’s hard to imagine how these acts could have functioned had Bowie not fallen to earth and sold the world all those years ago, breaking down barriers of possibility and image within popular music. Almost 40 years after Ziggy said his farewells, so too, it seems, has David Bowie. Hello Mr Jones and thank you!
‘Good Vibrations’ – Celebrating the Past and the Present The hotly anticipated Irish movie ‘Good Vibrations’ is currently doing the rounds on the film festival circuit; garnering great reviews everywhere it goes. The film has even been championed by Hollywood director Ron Howard and top film critic Mark Kermode, both of whom taking to Twitter to air their enthusiasm for it. Howard tweeted: “Saw a terrific new Irish Indie based on true story called Good Vibrations. Inspiring, funny, great music and character moments. Look for it.” Meanwhile Kermode echoed those sentiments by tweeting: “If you’re going to the London Film Festival, my top tip would be Good Vibrations an absolute humdinger with real heart and soul.” Still on a buzz from the movie, Kermode took to Twitter again the next day to enthuse: “Duly inspired by the fab ‘Good Vibrations’ I have rescued some very scratchy Outcasts waxings from the loft. ‘Self Conscious Over You’ ahoy!” Well, if you had no idea what ‘Good Vibrations’ was about, you now may have an inkling. From Belfast’s husband and wife directing team of Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros d’Sa, ‘Good Vibrations’ is a part rockumentary, part biopic, centred around the life of Terri Hooley, the man behind the Belfast-based Good Vibrations record shop and record label and the man who released The Undertones’ generation-defining track,
‘Teenage Kicks’. The film delves into Hooley’s many tales and, like all good rockumentaries should, accommodates the myth and the truth in equal measure, and all this with a backdrop of a conflicted Belfast in the 1970s and 80s. Punk had injected itself into the blood system of the youth of the UK in 1976, following the emergence of upstarts like The Sex Pistols, The Damned and The Clash, providing a voice for the voiceless and the disaffected youth of Britain. Therefore it was only natural that such an emotive primal scream would fit perfectly into
the Irish landscape of the 1970s, perhaps even more so than in Britain, given what was going on in our streets. As Mickey Bradley from the Undertones put it in a recent BB4 documentary about his band, “The Clash would’ve killed to have come from Derry!” Martin McLoone, co-Author of ‘Irish Rock and Popular Music: Before and After U2’, has a mantra about film and it is this: a film, regardless of the time it is based around should say something about time when it being made. If this is to be true we can only look at how far we have come since the days of the Undertones, Rudi, The Outcasts and Stiff Little Fingers. While the film is a celebration of our musical history, by its very existence the film is also a celebration of where we are today. The Punk scene was the spark to the flame that is the Irish music of today, the best of which is undoubtedly coming from the north. A run down through the bill of the Glasgowbury festival each year sees names like And So I Watch You From Afar, Fighting With Wire, Mojo Fury, Axis Of, Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas, The Wonder Villains, Our Krypton Son, SOAK, Ryan Vail, General Fiasco and, well I could go on and on! These are not just names to throw into that horribly patronising “up and coming talent” bracket. These acts are doing their thing right now and I don’t think it’s over-stating it to say that Ireland,
with particular focus to the north, is presently producing some of the best acts in the world. If you need the validation of Radio One to tell you before you realise it for yourself then kindly slap yourself in the face now and wake up to what is happening right here, right now. So yes, ‘Good Vibrations’ celebrates a golden era for Irish music and arrives slap bang in the middle of another one. As it happens, a number of individuals from the current acts mentioned above feature in the movie as extras or as band members. There are even a few Strabane and Lifford heads in there as extras too (Pictured below), so keep an eye out for a few familiar faces popping up on the big screen in the finest double denim. As the classic song goes - so hard to beat!

Looking at debt differently. Recently I have been inundated with people in trouble with debt. Financial difficulties can have a profound negative effect on our self esteem and general health. As a matter of fact, many people have been so confused and helpless about financial situations that they have sadly paid the ultimate price and taken their own lives. It is all very sad. I know that there was irresponsible borrowing from banks and financial institutions in the past however there was also irresponsible lending on behalf of the banks. I believe banks too must share the burden of loss. The mechanism for the creation of money is baffling. So strange I decided to investigate how money works. There are many resources available on ‘you tube’ and the internet that explains how money is created much better than I could. Have a look by simply putting the words ‘How money works’ into Google and be amazed at what you will see. The fact is money actually is created from ‘thin air’ as it were. Up to 97% of all money never leaves the bank. Ask yourself when you took out a mortgage did you actually see and feel the money the bank or building society gave you? Or did your bank simply transfer the money to another bank without you seeing or feeling it? Perhaps you received a cheque, which again is not money but simply a piece of paper which we believe has the value of the sum of money written on it.
Banks have the ability to create money from ‘thin air’. It exists but do you ever really see it?
If you have a sizeable deposit in the bank you will more than likely have to order large sums of cash well in advance simply because the bank does not have the cash. It will get it however, but you will have to wait for your own money. You can get cash from an ATM however most banks limit this to just £200 - £400 per day. Cash is not their business, debt and credit is. Cash is very cumbersome and expensive to move around whereas computers can transfer monies anywhere in an instant. It often baffles me too when I pay for something with a debit card it is often taken out of my account immediately whereas I have to wait sometimes days for a deposit to register. Believe it or not, when we borrow from banks the money, as I always thought, does not necessarily come from depositors’ money. Instead the document you sign when completing a financial transaction such as a mortgage application form is used by the bank as a financial instrument to create money from nothing. Check it out! There-
fore the bank has little or no financial liability as the money they ‘gave ‘you didn’t actually exist in the first place. This system of creating money from nothing has consequences for us all as it has the effect of increasing the money supply, increasing inflation and rendering each pound in everyone’s pocket to be worth less and less overtime. It guarantees boom and bust economies. However we seem to ignore what is happening and leave it to governments to ‘keep us right’ as it were. Governments however are only in office for short periods of time and as long as the economy is on the ‘up’ on their watch, they congratulate each other on doing a great job. I believe governments throughout the world are afraid to challenge banks as those who control the money supply seem to be a law on their own. Regularly we hear about financial scandals in banks and fraud on a massive scale. The result is banks may get their knuckles rapped but continue doing the same thing. I believe government debt from so called ‘bondholders’ was also created from thin air, just like quantitative easing, so how can we owe so much money and pay dearly for something that did not exist in the first place as it was created out of thin air?
...write your own story!
Workshops & Seminars
Kindness
Perhaps its’ time to think for ourselves as banks will use bully boy tactics and often illegal means to intimidate those who find it difficult to repay money that the bank created from thin air in the first place. Refuse to let them do this, become aware of your rights and challenge them all the way. Check the website www.getoutofdebtfree. org and see debt, credit, loans and banks from a different perspective. Worth thinking about!

Investment agency slammed for neglecting Strabane
Stormont’s business development agency, Invest NI, has been criticised for failing the north-west, after the publication of damning new statistics on government efforts to boost the economy here. Figures on investor visits released by the Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster show that not a single visit was made to Strabane over the last three years. The statistics show the north-west as a whole is being neglected as Derry only received 30 potential inward investment visits in the last three years, while Limavady has just the one. That’s compared to 213 visits in the Belfast area over the same period. Local MLA Michaela Boyle was critical of the agency’s treatment of Strabane and said there was no excuse for the absence of any visits to potentially bring investment. The West Tyrone member labelled the figures ‘extremely concerning’ and said reasons cited as putting off potential investors in years gone by – such as a lack of land – where no longer applicable. Invest NI defended its record, with a spokesperson stating that it had made nearly 600 offers of assistance to companies in the Derry District Council area in the last three years. The agency also said it encourages international investors to locate in any area in which their business will grow and thrive.
Teach English as foreign language (TEFL) Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is still booming, and there are countless opportunities for bright, energetic graduates. Foyle International paves the way for you to earn an attractive salary teaching English at home or in exotic locations around the globe. Bronagh’s office doesn’t have air conditioning, so she catches up on her paperwork at a beach café overlooking the ocean. So far today, she’s sung a Snow Patrol song with teenagers, played Guess Who with ten-year-olds, and debated with local businessmen whether taxpayers should have paid for Prince William’s wedding. “At last, I’m putting my degree to good use!” she thinks. Last year, like thousands of other recent graduates, Bronagh was getting more and more disheartened at the lack of graduate opportunities in Northern Ireland. After years of developing ‘transferable skills’ on her business degree, there weren’t any jobs to transfer them to! That’s why she took a TEFL course at Foyle International. In just four weeks, she had an internationally recognized teaching qualification, and quickly found work at a school in Morocco. “It did wonders for my self-esteem, to be in a job where I felt respected and I could use my brain,” she says. “And it was great to be in a sunnier climate and have some money in the bank!” But why take the TEFL course in the first place? Surely if you can speak English, you can teach it? Bronagh laughs, “I thought that too! But you really have to know your subject, English, to describe grammar and the like. And then you need to know how to teach, to plan a lesson with all the different stages and techniques. There’s more to it than just speaking English.” An accredited qualification can cost more, but
Bronagh explains why she paid that bit extra. “It’s opened doors to the best schools, with better money and conditions, teaching government ministers and company executives as well as children and teenagers. I’ve been lucky and had my pick of jobs.” But doesn’t she miss the cold rainy days and her old life? “I’ll go home one day. I always keep an eye out for jobs back home. Employers definitely look favourably on experience abroad, and teaching skills, like presentations for instance, are very useful in other careers.” And there’s something else keeping Bronagh in Casablanca – a Moroccan husband. “That wasn’t the original plan, but there you go! But I refuse to teach him English at home – that wouldn’t be conducive to a happy marriage!” According to Bronagh, TEFL romances are quite common, with all those balmy evenings spent lesson planning in exotic locations. Foyle International has offered a range of TEFL courses over the past decade, with successful participants now teaching in Derry and Dubai, Belfast and Brazil, Moville and of course Morocco. “The expertise of the teachers and the authenticity of training in a bustling language school alongside international students was ideal preparation,” says Bronagh. This year, Foyle offers its first one-month CELTA courses, the benchmark in TEFL qualifications, validated by the prestigious University of Cambridge. Any final advice from Bronagh? “It’s a challenging job, but so rewarding. The most essential qualities are energy, enthusiasm and a friendly nature.” The Moroccan husband, she assures me, is optional.

Damien Dempsey in concert
It’s been four long years since Damien Dempsey last played the Balor. We’re delighted to welcome him back as part of a tour of Ireland and the UK promoting his new album Almighty Love. Ever since the release of his debut single Dublin Town in 1997 Damien Dempsey has been a force on the Irish music scene. His passion, emotion and distinctive Dublin accented singing voice have marked him out as a peer of and successor to the likes of Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly and Shane McGowan. His live gigs are remarkable – containing a passion and intensity that really needs to be experienced to be appreciated. His mixture of Irish folk with contemporary lyrics and social commentary have won admiration from and invitations to perfrom with Bob Dylan and Morrisey among others. Damiens previous Balor gigs have been nothing short of sensational. The acoustic quality and intimacy of the venue offer the perfect complement to the honesty and emotion of his performance. This gig promises to be equally spectacular.

ACCA DACCA are Australia’s only internationally acclaimed, totally rockin’ tribute show to the late great Bon Scott and the legend that is AC/ DC. Over the last ten years they have developed a live reputation that is second to none, earning the thumbs up from Angus Young himself. The Acca Dacca show is a 2+ hour ride on the Highway To Hell with Bon Scott classics such as Dirty Deeds, Whole Lotta Rosie and Let There Be Rock. Brian Johnson fans won’t be disappointed as ACCA DACCA’s set also finds room for famous hits like Thunderstruck, Hells Bells and Back In Black.

One of the best and most consistently successful music acts of the last decade return to The Balor. Over the last 10 years Bell X1 have managed to combine producing consistently excellent studio albums with a dedication to touring that has made them one of music’s most exciting live acts. Their 5 studio albums to date - Neither Am I, Music In Mouth, Flock, Blue Lights On The Runway and Bloodless Coup – deliver a brilliant mingling of electronic music, intelligent and witty lyrics and anthemic pop rock. This is their 3rd visit to the Balor. Their most recent gig was as part of their 2010 global acoustic tour highlights of which were released as a limited edition 2 disc album Field Recordings. Their sound has been compared to many including Talking Heads, Radiohead and The Flaming Lips but they are unmistakably Bell X1. Superb songwriting, excellent musicianship and a stagecraft par excellence are just some of what makes a Bell X1 gig one of the highlights of this or any other year.

Mayor of Donegal Launches joint reconciliation project
Riverine Autumn School launched Mayor of Donegal, Cllr. Frank McBrearty officially launched the inaugural Riverine Autumn School at the Eclipse Cinema in Lifford on Friday, October 12. The Autumn School forms part of the wider Reconciliation through the Riverine project currently underway in the Strabane and Lifford area. The Riverine Autumn School features a week of participatory events ranging from heritage walks, seminars, drama and sporting events including fishing and Ladies Gaelic Football. Opening the Riverine Autumn School, Mayor Frank McBrearty said, “I am honoured to be here today to officially open the first Riverine Autumn School. The programme of events cater for a wide variety of interests and I would encourage people to have a look at the programme and attend a few of the events. I would also like to thank all those who have assisted in organising the Riverine Autumn School especially the voluntary Riverine Forum members.” Funding of over one million euro was announced earlier this year from the International Fund for Ireland, an independent, international organisation established by the Irish and British Governments in 1986 to promote economic and social advance and encourage contact, dialogue and reconciliation between Unionists and Nationalists throughout Ireland. The funding will go towards the Youth and Community participation element of the Reconciliation through the Riverine Project. This element is

It is also intended to strengthen relationships as a means of addressing the legacy of the conflict and providing opportunities for local groups from across the border and on a cross community basis to form good working and personal relationships. Also attending the launch was Cllr. Dan Kelly Vice Chair of Strabane District Council. He stated, “On behalf of Strabane District Council I welcome this, the first Riverine Autumn School.
There is a great line up of events planned and I would encourage people to come out and support the Autumn School. I am particularly pleased that the Riverine Autumn School features the Flann O’Brien Literary Festival and I am sure this will attract visitors from further afield and add an interesting dimension to the programme.” All the planned events are free to the public and further details can be found on the Riverine Autumn School’s promotional material or by contacting Martina Fox, Donegal County Council on 00 353 74 9172212.
Council won’t demand answers from DARD
Strabane councillors have opted not to push the Agriculture Minister for an explanation into why the town was overlooked for the department’s new headquarters. Local councillor Patsy Kelly proposed a motion at this month’s full council meeting calling for DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill to come and explain her decision making protest, but it was defeated after Sinn Féin, DUP and Independent councillors voted against it. The move came after it emerged that Strabane was top of a list of suitable locations for the new development, but was still overlooked in favour of Ballykelly. The decision has left many with in the town feeling again overlooked, as the news comes in the same month it was revealed no potential investment visits were made to Strabane by Invest NI in the last three years. Speaking after the meeting, Cllr. Kelly said those councillors had questions to answer to those seeking employment in Strabane and those public sector workers who face daily trips to Belfast for work. He said: “I’m extremely disappointed that fellow Strabane district councillors failed to stand up for those seeking employment in the area and those public sector workers facing a daily arduous trek to Belfast to support their families. “Whilst the SDLP fully welcomes the decentralization of public sector jobs, questions need answered as to the decision-making process. Eight hundred jobs coming to Strabane would have created a huge fillip for employment in the entire region. The knock-on effect from such an influx would have made a massive increase to the local economy. Just think if 800 people bought a single bottle of water or sandwich in the town each day, what it would add to the local economy,” he added. “All my motion sought was to pose the question to the minister. It was to seek answers as to the decision process. As public representatives, that is the least we can do. People in Strabane feel once again they have been bypassed for jobs and investment.”

Living with Autism The Strabane and Castlederg Autism Group shall be the main recipient, alongside Chest, Heart and Stroke, at a fundraising ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event to be held at St Pat’s Hall, Strabane on December 7 and 8. One of the main objectives of the group is to raise awareness about Autism within the local district.
The ‘Herald’ met up with Strabane couple Kieran and Ann-Marie McColgan, whose six-year-old son, Calum, has Asperger’s syndrome. Joining them was Emma Burke, branch manager of the Strabane and Castlederg Autism Group, which is a registered branch of Autism NI. The couple are greatly indebted to how the group, which now has a branch established in Strabane, has helped them and their children. However, they believe that there are many people out there who would benefit from the group who are still not availing of the service. “Autism is an issue close to a lot of people’s hearts within the Strabane District and the key thing is to raise awareness and let people know that there are groups out there locally who can be of great benefit. The help is there if a family needs it,” AnnMarie explains.
“Its pure literal thinking,” said Kieran. “There’s no in between and things are simply black and white. Even on a school run if there was a traffic diversion it could upset Calum’s whole routine for the day. So as long he knows in advance that we may have to take a different route home that day he’ll be fine. “ He added, “Within autism there is a massive wide spectrum, from children with learning difficulties and very little communication to children with Asperger’s, some of whom show signs of great intelligence. Calum’s forte would be computers, which he has been working with since he was three. He has a fantastic memory for things like books and can recall pages just like that. However, he would have difficulty in communicating.”
Young Calum was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in January this year. Previous to this he was at the assessment stage. During this time, Kieran and Ann Marie were put in contact with a support group in Castlederg. The diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome is still relatively new and the couple are of When attending the meetings the couple the belief that many can go through their noticed a number of other Strabane people life without being properly diagnosed. present. The natural step, which was “When I was at school and a child sat quiencouraged by Emma, the branch man- etly and said nothing, perhaps some teachager, was for a number of outreach groups ers may have been content with that. Even simply talking to other people who have been going through the same thing or who have gone down a similar path is of great benefit. Also, what knowledge we may have, we were able to discuss with other people and they were gaining support from that,” explained Kieran.
Routine The needs of a child with autism vary from family to family. Ann-Marie outlined one example of how being involved with the group helped both Kieran and her in dealing with the situation. “Children with autism need structure and they need routine in their lives,” she told us. “For instance, Calum would need to know a day in advance what he is going to be doing the next day. He would find it very difficult to deal with a change in routine. So he has a calendar up in the fridge, which helps to outline his day to day so that he knows what’s coming ahead. Even the calendar was something we learnt from a lady who attends the group, who suggested it to us.“
When we first attended a meeting in Castlederg we were welcomed with open arms. There’s just a feeling that we’re all in this together
As Kieran told us, the couple noticed early on that something was different about Calum compared to his older brothers. “For ourselves, we noticed the early signs with Calum. He’s the youngest of our three boys. Ryan’s 13, Jason’s 10 and Callum’s six. We just noticed a difference in traits and from about thirteen months onwards we pursued certain steps to look into it. He went into the Melmount Language Unit So what exactly is Asperger’s syndrome? for intense speech and language because

he was delayed in his speech. All this ran in par with his great abilities, which ultimately led to the diagnosis of Asperger’s. However, after diagnosis it’s as if the gates are closed and you’re out on your own. I think that’s wrong. It’s a lot for a couple to take in and I notice single parents at group meetings too, who are trying to deal with it. Everything does change and the other children in the family have to learn to understand the differences, not just the parents, so it does influence the family set-up,” admitted Kieran. Branch manager, Emma Burke is of the belief that the best advice comes from those who are experiencing autism within the home, which is what makes the meetings all the more vital. “Services are very limited, both financially and experience-wise. Specific paediatricians and child psychiatrists are just not in place properly, so the only way to really gain any insight is to talk to other parents and share experiences and knowledge,” she told us. The meetings are open to anyone and first timers should not feel in the slightest bit nervous or worried about being judged. “Nobody judges and anyone who attends will feel very welcome,” explained Kieran. “When we first attended a meeting in Castlederg we were welcomed with open arms. There’s just a feeling that we’re
ther during the summer schemes that are run, where all the children come along, as do their brothers and sisters. The summer scheme activities were a great opportunity for our other two sons to meet siblings of other autistic children. At the end of the day, it’s not just the parents who are dealing with this and it has been ideal for them as they get to make new friends with a shared experience and they can discuss that with each other.”
of being out socially with her brother, who is autistic, however, in this environment she is much more comfortable as nobody is judging her and nobody is judging her brother.”
Kieran agreed with Emma’s views on isolation. “For a few years Ann-Marie and I would’ve isolated ourselves. I remember for nearly a full year I didn’t call to my mother’s house with Calum at all. I just couldn’t take him anywhere and I thought that I was putting a burden on other people and also Judged it wasn’t fair on the child either. But Another vital aspect of the group, the group has helped Ann-Marie and according to Emma, is that it allows myself in so many ways to accept the families with autism to engage in situation and find positivity from it. family activities without the concern of being judged – something that It has also made me less judgemental makes a lot of people close themselves when I see a child crying when I’m off from interacting with others. out shopping. Often we would have a tendency to think, “god, that child’s “We’re still quite a rural community spoiled?” but now I would think that here and with autism being a social it’s important not to overlook the fact disability that very social isolation that the child in question may have his can begin to take over and people can or her own difficulties. ‘Strictly’ returns to St Pat’s Hall in December
‘Strictly Come Dancing’ has recently returned to our screens on a Saturday night and also for a fifth consecutive year to the local home of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, St Pat’s Hall, Strabane. Practices are well on their way and will result in two fantastic show nights on Friday December 7 and Saturday December 8 in that very fine venue. The event‘s popularity is still growing from the first outing in 2008. As is the case each year,
a new group of novice dancers have been drawn together and guided through various dance routines by a team of well experienced tutors. The results as we have seen over the previous events will speak for themselves.

Tickets are priced at £10.00. The organisers are certain that those fortunate enough to secure one of these much sought after tickets will have a very enjoyable night’s entertainment and in doing so will be helping a very worthy cause.

Glenelly man brought into new Dublin management team
A Glenelly man has become part of the new management team of the Dublin senior footballers. Michael Kennedy was asked by new Dublin manager Jim Gavin to come on board as part of his management team, after he succeeded Pat Gilroy earlier this month. Michael had previously worked with the Dublin squad under Pat Gilroy – helping Dublin to an All-Ireland Senior title in 2011. He wasn’t involved with the senior squad this year as he took up a coaching role with Dublin Under-21s under Jim Gavin, while also focussing on the demanding role as Strategic Director of the successful GAA Academy at Dublin City University. That winning relationship with Jim Gavin, with whom he won two under-21 All Ireland titles in 2010 and 2012, is now continuing into the senior squad. In 2010 Michael carried out video analysis as Dublin claimed the All Ireland under-21 title at the expense of Donegal, while this year he was involved as a coach and selector as they beat Roscommon to the title. The former Glenelly forward says he’s delighted to be part of the mission to bring Sam Maguire back to the capital: “To get the call from Jim Gavin is a massive honour for me personally, and to get to work with these lads that I’ve got to know over the last four years at senior level and with the under 21s is

a huge opportunity.” Michael also brings the considerable experience of having worked as part of Anthony Tohill’s management team at the International Rules Series in 2010 and 2012. He now forms part of a stellar backroom team for Dublin,
with All Ireland winner Mick Deegan, exLeitrim and Dublin stat Declan Darcy, and Shane Hanlon all lending their expertise. Michael says his main role will be tactical: “My title is selector but I’ll be doing a lot of the coaching as well. It’s a massive challenge

to blend the youth and more experienced players. Dublin is always seen as being at the top of the ladder, and coming from my background as a proud Tyrone man, to be considered among the elite in Dublin, and to be handed that baton, is a huge reward. I’ve given a lot of my time to football over the last number of years so it’s a reward I’m really looking forward to it.” “Jim is a very ambitious man. He certainly will have the intention of getting Dublin back to the top, but he’s very aware of the task involved in that. He’s going to bring huge passion and enthusiasm, but he also brings the ethic that it’s very much up to the players. We’ll put the very best practices in place and it’s up to the players then to climb that mountain.” Michael also paid tribute to his parents for their role in his GAA journey, and the sacrifices they have made – he said they planted the seed: “I wouldn’t have achieved what I have, but for the influence of my parents, Tommy and Anne-Mary. They had such strong Gaelic values. They had such a strong love of the game, bringing us to matches all over the country from before we could even walk, and that’s where it all started. Where I have got to today, they started that journey, and I am hugely indebted to them.” Dublin begin their bid to retain the Leinster Championship against the winners of Westmeath vs Carlow next year. We wish Michael all the best.

RUGBY: Strabane Academy Notes North West League U16 v St Columb’s
drive and quick ball from scrum half O Flaherty exposed the space on the left and some excellent ball through hands allowed Sproule get in the corner for his second. The bench was then emptied allowing a number of new players debut and they certainly will cause selection dilemas for the next game, Luke Hayes in particular made a great try saving tackle as it was Strabane’s turn to defend. Captain Kelly decided to have a rest and allow the O Flaherty brother show they have a great deal to offer as a half back pairing. In the end a lapse of concentration allowed St Columb’s in for a consolation try which their efforts in defence certainly merited. Noteworthy performances from Reece Laird at number 8 and the ever consistent McIntyre and Crumley as well as Ryan Hendly who was outstanding at Full-Back.
Strabane Academy got off to a winning start in their North West league campaign against the pre season favourites and did so away from home. In truth Strabane dominated the encounter with the forward and backs combining to outgun the hosts by 3 tries to 1. From the kick off the first 15 minutes were spent entirely in the St Columb’s 22 but and despite sterling defence from the hosts eventually the pressure took its tole as the forwards bulldozed their way through for Gomari to score. Soon after some good forwards pressure created space on the left and an excellent backs move resulted in winger Jordan Sproule sidestepping his way past the last defender to run in under the posts. In truth only some poor handling and resolute defending denied Strabane running in 5 or 6 tries in the first half. The second half started in the same vain as the 1st Just a couple of weeks back, Strabane Academy ended and very quickly another fantastic forward played their first Saturday fixtures of the season,

Being in control of your mind is even more important than body control! In all the years I have been playing and coaching psychology within golf, I can honestly say I have never seen anything quite so compelling and dramatic as the recent Ryder Cup at Medinah.

In effect, Rose is saying your golf swing can be less than perfect but if you think well, then you will be a formidable opponent. What Rose said is backed up by science because even though we see a ‘consistent swing’ as being the holy grail of golf, it seems our brain will never quite let us get there.

Joe Doherty Memorial Cup
Shooting contest bigger and better than ever! The annual Joe Doherty Memorial Cup took place on Sunday 19th August 2012 at Strabane Sporting Club shooting grounds. The winners on the day were DTL: 1st Robert McCaul 2nd Arnie Irvine 3rd Mickey McCurdy 4th Gareth McBrearty. DTL Novice: 1st Stephen Devine 2nd Eddie Ward 3rd Martin O’Neill 4th Patrick Devine Jnr. Centenary Celebrations for Glenelly Church MOT’s
A week-long celebration has been held in the Glenelly Valley to mark the centenary of St Patrick’s Church in Cranagh. The string of events included an exhibition of photographs and artefacts, a special Mass each evening with guest speakers, and a unique flower display representing aspects of the life of St Patrick. Parishioners in the Glenelly Valley have also launched a commemorative book to chart the history of the church, entitled ‘Of Stone and Story’. The five day celebration, which took place at the end of September, attracted large crowds to the village of Cranagh, which was bedecked in flags and bunting for the occasion. The exhibition reflected on the church’s history and the social life of the parish over the last hundred years, and included photos, memorabilia, documentary information as well as audio and video recordings. ‘Of Stone and Story’, the publication produced to mark the Centenary of the Church, was also launched and is now on general sale. It’s made up of articles detailing the early history of Badoney Upper Parish and the building of the church in 1912. The historian, Fr. Kieran Devlin had written an essay on the relevance of Glenelly as an early Christian for inclusion in the publication, prior to his recent passing. Reflections of the hardship endured by the local

people in the building of the church are also included, while some parishioners have written on their recollections of changes within the church and the social history of the parish. Joseph Carolan was part of the organising committee – he said it was worth the hard work: “The committee met every week since May to organise this celebration and we’re very happy things turned out so well. We felt it was important to mark the occasion and acknowledge the effort people made 100 years ago to help build it. Everyone supported it very well and it’s given the whole community a lift, people have been very proud of their parish.” Father Francis Bradley, Fr. John Cargan, Fr. Paul Farren all said mass during the week and spoke of the significance of the Church and their own memories. Local Parish Priest Fr. Brian Donnelly also said an open air mass at the site of the old graveyard, and on the final day Strabane Parish Priest Fr. Declan Boland spoke engagingly of the significance of the church. He said: “St Patrick’s bell that called us to worship today, has called the people from this part of Badoney Upper, pealing for over 100 years…This bell continues to peal across the Glenelly valley, a place of rugged beauty and silence, an area of rich culture, steeped in history – this Parish spans from the foot of the Sperrins to the heights of Ballinasollus.” He concluded: “As you begin an exciting new phase of your journey and standing on your noble tradition, I urge you to press forward with great hope and openness of heart.” The commemorative book ‘Of Stone and Story’ is available to buy in shops in Cranagh, Plumbridge and Gortin.

Strabane Ath F.C. Club Notes Strabane Athletics’ first team, managed by Martin Doherty and assisted by Declan McColgan and Gary McGettigan has started life in Intermediate football with assurance totting up 5 wins out of 5 and a place in the Intermediate Pharmacy Cup final against Newbuildings. Wins over Roe Rovers (1-5), Ardstraw (0-3), Dungiven (4-0), Oxford (0-4) and Mountjoy (3-1) ensure they are unbeaten to date against opposition in their own league. A last kick of the game defeat against Championship side Tobermore Utd saw them exit the Craig Memorial Cup but it may be a blessing in disguise as they go in pursuit of a league that has eluded every other team Strabane ever had in Intermediate status.

Who do you support and who is/ was your favourite all time player for that club?
Who is the best player you have played alongside and against?
What is your favourite TV series and film?
The best I played against would be Paul McVeigh (Donegal Celtic), even when he was having a bad game he was always capable of scoring at any minute a great player and fantastic finisher.

I’m a big Man Utd fan and my favourite player of all time is Roy Keane. His hunger and determination to win was unreal. What Utd wouldn’t do for another player like him today?
What teams have you played for in your career?
Mr
I love Only Fools and Horses and watch the repeats regularly. In more recent times though I’d have to say Calaforincation, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones - all quality viewing. So many films to choose from but The Godfather, Goodfellas, Blow, Kingpin and Last of the Mohicans are up there.
You love your music, who would you consider to be your favourite band(s)?
I’m a massive Oasis and Kasabain fan but also like the much older bands like Led
All forms should be handed to club registrar, Mr Seamus McGoldrick or another committee member with corresponding fee. No form will be accepted without corresponding fee and all monies will go directly to club development.
Zepplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The who and Tom Petty. I’m steady attending concerts around Ireland and UK - ‘Music is Power’.
Other than your mum’s cooking of course what do you classify as your favourite meal? Ha ha - not sure if you can top my ma’s the home cooking. I enjoy most pasta dishes and a nice bit of salmon is tasty every so often and getting it made for you is even better :-)
What is your favourite childhood memory?
The summers I spent in Rossnowlagh as a child with the family, relatives and friends top the list
Do you think SAFC can win the Intermediate League and Cups they can partake in this season? There is no reason why we can’t. We have
a strong squad and so many hungry and determined younger players breaking through. We all know we have to perform and give 100% in every match to stay in the team so it bodes well for now and the future. Time can only tell but we’ve made a strong start to life at intermediate level.
Your colleagues and management have nicknamed you ‘The Kenyan’ - Why? Lol - that’s to do with my ability to train hard and keep running, even after a hard weekend. Think it could be passed onto a few of the younger lads now though, someone like David Taylor who has to be told to stop!
In exactly 5 words what does it mean to play for your hometown club and also have the extra responsibility of being vice captain? Proud, Privileged, Honoured, Fun, Enjoyable
