Protect your eyes when handling fireworks this Halloween Halloween is just next week, it’s a fun time of year, everyone is dressed up and fireworks are a popular way to celebrate the spookiest night of the year in Strabane and Donegal. Fireworks can be spectacular during the dark night of Halloween but care must be taken when handling them to protect your eyes as they can damage your eyesight. Whether you are handling fireworks or standing near them, beware as there are scores of eye injuries that can be caused as a result of not following sound safety advice. Here is some top tips to protect your eyes when handling fireworks: • Wear protective eye wear – normal glasses will not protect your eyes against most injuries. Wear polycarbonate lenses if you are going to be lighting fireworks. • Buy fireworks that meet British Standards – ensure you buy your fireworks • Stay clear of fireworks that have been lit – even if from a reputable retailer and that they the firework hasn’t gone off, keep your distance confirm to British Standards, these will as it could still explode. be marked BS 7114 on the box. • Supervise children at all times – over half of firework injuries are suffered by children. • Stand back – light your fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper and then D McGovern Opticians and Contact Lenses stand well back. • Do not give sparklers to children under Centre Main St Lifford and Castle St Strabane (048) 71882506 the age of five.

Drama, Comedy and Music the Alley has it all this Autumn! This Autumn season the Alley has something for everyone with a range of superb events starting with a delightful children’s production by Cahoots Children Theatre Company. ‘Duck Death and the Tulip is a new production is adapted from the picture book written by the award winning author Wolf Erlbruch and offers a gentle yet compelling insight into a subject matter not often associated with Children’s Theatre.
family and a boy from the other) meet in an Internet chat room and are anxious to meet in person, John’s already hectic life shifts into high gear as he tries to keep his double life a secret. One person trying to cover his tracks is tricky but add John’s Lodger Stanley and his Father to the equation and you end up with a world of confusion, and maybe even a confession or two!
and self-deprecating. She never cries. Never wallows in self-pity. Armed only with her half-bottle of Mundies wine, she gives an incredibly funny and moving account of her fall from grace from fresh faced teenage bride living in Derry’s tough Creggan Estate, to the pitiful ‘street wino’ condition we find her in today. Along the way we see working class life and death at its funniest, rawest and cruellest. And get to meet an assortment of characters who have coloured Maire’s life.
Crows on the Wire by Jonathan Burgess Crows on the Wire is the title of a new play commissioned by the Verbal Arts Centre from playwright Jonathan Burgess. ‘Crows on the Wire’ explores elements of the transition of the RUC to the PSNI as a result of the Good Friday Agreement, from the perspective of its impacts upon the individual officer.
In a strangely heart-warming story, a duck strikes up an unlikely friendship with Death.... This simple, unusual, warm and witty story deals with the difficult subject matter of death in a way that is elegant, straightforward, and thought provoking. After the success of Cahoots NI’s production Egg, which dealt with the early stages of life and the transition from childhood to adulthood, this show explores the experience of loss in the same engaging and thoughtful way. Featuring live music, illusion, dance and, above all….magic.
Drama November is full of brilliant drama performances which will engage, entertain and enthral you:
Set on the November night of the changeover, ‘Crows on the Wire’ recounts strong and deeply personal stories. The characters of Jack and Ruth reflect a sense of frustration and disaffection felt amongst the ranks, whilst David is part of the institutional change from past to present

Children’s Show The Adventures of Santa Claus To coincide with the annual Christmas lights switch on in Strabane Town, the Alley Theatre will host a very special performance ‘The Adventures of Santa Claus’.
The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ is a master-piece of 20th Century drama, powerfully demonstrating Bertolt Brecht’s pioneering theatrical techniques. A servant girl sacrifices everything to protect a baby abandoned in the heat of war. Order restored, she is made to confront the boy’s mother in a legal contest over who deserves to keep him. The comical judge calls on an ancient tradition “the chalk circle” to resolve the dispute. Who wins? From the Company that brought you last year’s hugely popular ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’.
Comedy David O’Doherty Will Try to Fix Everything
Caught in the Net by Ray Cooney
Every child knows about Santa Claus, the jolly man who brings gifts to all at Christmas… but… just where did Santa Claus come from? Legend has it that he was a foundling in the forest raised by a Wood Nymph called Nici – she called him Claus, meaning “little one” in the old fairy language, but the Queen of the Nymphs decided he should be called Niclaus meaning Neci’s Little One… adopted by woodland fairies, he grew up surrounded by elves, and other magic creatures … it was then that his adventures really begin…

Strabane History Society Launch Audit of Surviving Historic Buildings Strabane Library was the venue last week as Strabane History Society hosted a highly successful launch of a new project examining local historic buildings that have vanished from the local landscape and the need to protect those still in existence. A major audit of surviving buildings in the Strabane and Lifford area will be carried out before being compiled in a booklet to be launched at a later date. “Many buildings and institutions are gone. Some have changed beyond recognition and others have changed but Old Townhall, Strabane

are recognisable and now have other functions. It’s in recognition of such environmental, historical, industrial and cultural changes that we have brought forward this project,” explained Michael Kennedy, of Strabane History Society, speaking at the launch and outlining the objectives of the project. “Recently, we have been pleased and amazing at the great interest in old photographs of Strabane District presented on Facebook,” Mr Kennedy continued. “People are very interested in the present and in comparing it with the past.
Project Our project features over 50 sites. We feature the work of Gerry Cassidy and Jim Devlin from Strabane and District Camera Club, who have gone round the sites we have identified. We have looked at the history of the buildings, we have looked at the buildings themselves and we have looked at the changes that have happened.” The project, under the title ‘Riverine
Heritage Collection - Buildings Past and Present in the Foyle, Finn and Mourne Valleys’ is being funded by the International Fund for Ireland, with support from Donegal County Council and Strabane District Council. Chairman of Strabane District Council, Ruairi McHugh was present at the launch and enthusiastically welcomed the project.
Councillor McHugh explained. In his keynote speech at the launch, Dr Liam Campbell from the Foyle Civic Trust, who specialises and advises on preservation and audited buildings of historical value, outlined the importance of the project and the benefits in investing in heritage. “In these difficult times, heritage and the preservation of buildings can fall way down the peck“This is aimed at both past and future. ing order of investment. John Dooher of Strabane History Society spoke of some of the questions we must ask when looking back on certain buildings. “People have clear memories of this or that building from their past and many feel a sense of disappointment that more of them have not survived. Some have fallen into serious disrepair and others have been removed to make way for other developments. Looking back we have to ask the question, ‘was it right that those historic buildings were allowed to be demolished or changed beyond recognition?’ Should Rome or Paris or London be treated in similar fashion without respect for preservation? Clearly the answer is no and we have to take a long hard look at our process of heritage vandalism over the past 50 years,” Mr Dooher said. The results of the audit will be published in booklet form and will be complemented by a series of talks and presentations at local venues demonstrating both the strengths and risks to our built heritage. “It would be the aim of the project to awaken greater awareness of the need to be more proactive in the preservation of our historical heritage and the possible alternatives to the ‘demolition brigade’ when buildings become endangered, “Mr Dooher added. The programme will run over the next two months and will hopefully be of interest to present generations and provide a richer heritage for the future population.

New function room at MK’s proving popular At MK’s we are delighted to announce that we have successfully launched our fabulous new function room. The response has been overwhelming, with word of mouth leading to us being booked up practically up to the end of the year. We can now offer sit-down dinners, seating up to 60 patrons very comfortably and up to 100 patrons for parties. Our extended space has made a considerable difference and I’m sure patrons, old and new, will be impressed with our new colour scheme. In Spring, we plan to continue the new colour scheme right through to the front bar with a few minor alterations, making it a mirror image of the function room but in a more casual style. In this market, we at MK’s believe
that the customer deserves nice surroundings and good customer service. We’ve been so busy since the refurbishment that it’s clear to see that people are responding to that. We’ve had Christenings, dinner functions and birthday parties in the function room while having the likes of CRAIC playing in the front bar, all creating a lovely ambience that definitely doesn’t go un-noticed. We will also be holding a black-tie charity dinner-dance in Jackson’s Hotel, Ballybofey, on Sunday, November 24. It’ll be the third such event we’ve hosted. We planned to do it last year to mark ten years in business but following the pass-
ing of our dear mother we decided against holding it that year. Now we are doing it this year, and even though we are now 11 years in business, it will still be a celebration of ten wonderful years for MK’s. Foyle Hospice and Cancer Research UK will be the main beneficiaries of the event and also some local groups like the Glenside Adult Training Centre, who we’ve supported down the years and who’ve played a great part in making MK’s a success. The black-tie dinner is open to all customers, old and new. It’s going to be a fabulous evening of great food and great music with the wonderful Hugo Duncan and John McNicholl. We want everyone to feel welcome on night. I (MK) personally will be giving out the prize of a holiday on the night to one lucky winner, which is my present as a ‘thank you’ to all the customers. For details on the dinner dance contact me (MK) on 02871 884427 or 07774554751. Finally, I’d like to thank my dad, Sharon and staff and, most importantly, my customers, old and new, for making MK’s the place it is today. MK

Songs from the Rainy City the same enthusiasm for our own acts back home,” he reckons.
Sion singer songwriter, Nicky McCallan has been one of the most well known faces in the local music scene for over a decade now.
New Material As for the new original material, Nicky says that it’s all very positive – something that surprises even himself. “As far back as my days with Gerry Strawbridge and Richie Montague in God Talking Soul, my songs were always very grunge or punk based and a little dark. It all seems very positive now, lyrically at least anyway.”
As front man of post-grunge rockers God Talking Soul he crafted a number of anthems that took the band across the country until the proverbial brick wall that is increasingly difficult for bands to negotiate derailed the momentum. The solo years followed, with the cover culture of the pub circuit eventually sapping the creativity. Six years would pass before Nicky would feel compelled to write again. It took a move to Manchester for him to find his musical mojo again and now he is set to release a new EP of self-penned tracks called ‘Hear on Earth’. Speaking to the Herald from his home in Manchester, the Sion man revealed his delight to be writing again and owes a lot of it to the city where he now resides.
Manchester “I think arriving in Manchester and everything being new got me excited again and the creative buzz that’s still evident here definitely had something to do with me wanting to write again. Being in Manchester and all that goes with it made me feel that it was only right to give it another bash. Before that I got caught up playing covers at the weekend and any time I did try to write something it just wasn’t up to my standard, in my opinion anyway. I was of the belief that I could’ve sat down and wrote ten songs a day and not one of them would have been any good,” he confesses. It was in November last year that Nicky decided to move to Manchester. As a city with a rich musical heritage and an enduring appetite for more, it was an ideal move, particularly as Nicky would cite many of the bands and artists from that very city as major influences on him. Perhaps there is still a lot to be said about that wet and windy city’s ability to be a muse for songwriters as Nicky was back writing just two days after arriving.
Sion singer songwriter Nicky McCallan now based in Manchester is set to release his new 4-track EP.
He landed in Manchester with bookings for just two gigs. There were no guarantees of anything after that. However, more bookings immediately followed and it soon became evident to the Sion singer that things were very different in Manchester compared to back home. “Over here they are crying out for one man and a guitar. Manchester is still saturated with bands so I’ve managed to find a niche market because there wasn’t too many doing what I was doing. I’d be out playing on average about five nights a week now,” he tells us. Nicky’s sets would be packed with material from numerous Manchester legends such as The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division, Stone Roses and Oasis. The reaction from the audiences surprised him somewhat. “I thought it all might be a bit obvious and played-out but on the contrary, Manchester is still very proud of its musical history and the audiences love to hear songs from all those great bands. It’s strange because I don’t think we share
Recording of the EP took place in Strabane musician Niall Doherty’s studio in Manchester. “I ran into Niall on the street one day. We got chatting and Niall said he had a studio in the house and I should pop round some day. Soon we had an EP planned and within the space of two or three days I had four tracks written. We then decided to put five tracks down. To be honest, I didn’t expect much. We took the barebones of what I had into the studio and Niall just grabbed the tunes and he basically helped me build them. There’s a full band ensemble on top but only to the extent where I want the listener to enjoy something more than just me and a guitar, but also I don’t want to bluff people with something that I’ll not be able to deliver live. I tried to keep it as raw as possible but at the same time give the listener their money’s worth,” insists Nicky. The Sion man says he is now reinvigorated as a singer-songwriter following the recording of the EP. “Writing those new songs and playing them out live has given me a new boost in confidence. One song in particular called ‘Land Ahoy’, which was the first song I wrote after six years, is requested now at the gigs I do.” As it turns out, the ‘Hear on Earth’ EP is only the beginning. Nicky is now planning an album for 2014. In the meantime, the EP will be released on November 5 and launched at a venue called the Violet Hour in Manchester. A number of musical figures from Manchester will be in attendance, including punk singer and author, John Robb
The cover of Nicky McCallan’s new 4-track EP which is set to be available soon.
and Stone Roses drummer ‘Reni’ who have both attended a number of Nicky’s gigs. While the EP may have been recorded in Manchester, soaking up the creative buzz of the city, Nicky tells us that it nevertheless has a strong Strabane link to it. “It’s produced by Niall Doherty. Dianaimh Ward is doing backing vocals and playing cello and there’s going to be a bit of a cross-water link up with Aidan Simpson recording his trumpet parts in Strabane. The artwork was done by Strabane artist Barry McGowan. Barry did the artwork for my very first EP with God Talking Soul all those years ago and he’s done a lot of work for me since then, so I thought it was only right to go back to Baz.” So there you have it: ‘Hear on Earth’ – made in Manchester, carved in Strabane! The EP will also be downloadable on iTunes and copies will be available when Nicky returns to Strabane for his festive gigs at Dixie’s and Christy’s. There’s been a murder... staid industry. We must take some of the blame. We could’ve sent Cowell on his way but we didn’t.
People are certain to have ‘Sinead verses Miley’ fatigue by this stage so there is no point delving into the issue as all that can be said has probably been said. However, somewhat lost in the conversation, and rightly it must be said as public perception of mental health is an issue of upmost importance, was Sinead O’Connor’s concerns about the “murder”, as she puts it, of popular music by moguls such as Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. It is true that too many people in suits who have never once lifted a guitar, drum, bass, keyboard or microphone in their lives have too much clout in what constitutes pop music and rock ‘n’ roll. Sinead’s views are far from a revelation; people have been saying it for years. In the 1980s, Frank Zappa said: “modern music is people who can’t think signing artists who can’t write songs to make records for people who can’t hear.” Stock, Aitken and Waterman were three particular pop factory
shop stewards at this time, overseeing a formulaic conveyor belt of music without a pulse. But it didn’t stop great bands from making great music and it certainly didn’t stop Nirvana from shaking up the world and changing the musical landscape for a generation in the early 90s. Worryingly, Cowellism has a media clout that Waterman et al never had and too many people are still seduced by what a television screen tells them on a Saturday evening. Reassuringly, viewership is down on television talent shows but there will always be new skin for the old ceremony and people will buy into it. Yes, people still queue for auditions, which they have every right to do, but one would probably prefer them to go home, learn their craft, write their own songs and present their own truth, not a polished marketable Stepford varia-
He’s now our personal Frankenstein’s monster, not a savvy musical Svengali. JR Ewing once said, “nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the public” and he was right. It doesn’t take a great business mind to do what Cowell and Walsh do.
Simon Cowell (left) and Louis Walsh (right) have been blamed for the ‘murder’ of music by the likes of Sinead O’Connor but are they really totally to blame?
tion of it, which it will be as soon as one of these ‘suits’ gets hold of them. It has been addressed on this music page before that there’s little room for the outlaws in music anymore and despite being right about the draining grip
of Cowellism - it’s hard to blame Walsh; he’s a bit like Salacious B. Crumb to Cowell’s Jabba the Hut – Sinead has taken and will continue to take some stick for being outspoken about what has now become essentially a shallow,
It doesn’t take a visionary to do what Cowell and Walsh do. It simply takes someone without the vision or balls to respect what comes from the heart and believe it or not, some people don’t want to go down that road. Yes, it may not line the pocket but, and this may come as a shock to some people, not everybody has put a Pound sign on what they believe in! Such views are deemed as snobbery and you know what, life’s too short to disagree, so for the sake of the blood that flows through the veins of the boy or girl screaming their truth into a mic right now, douse us in a snobbery as modesty will find us in a queue with someone less talented than us telling us how it is, and how can that ever be right?

ME
I find worrying is like ‘forecasting the future and focussing on what will go wrong’. Many of us seem to entertain the notion that if we expect the worst possible scenario and scare the life out of ourselves by gearing up for this prospect, anything else is a bonus. Whereas there may be some merit in this approach my experience is that it is not useful for me. It simply makes me feel bad and robs me of the energy to do something about it. I can be so caught up with the anxiety produced by such an approach that I am almost paralysed to respond. I can ‘beat myself up’ with negative self – talk around how stupid I am/was for getting myself into this situation in the first place. I may also focus my anger on someone or something and blame them/that for creating the problem. This in turn makes it even more difficult for me to think constructively or positively weigh up my options on the best way forward. It seems that even if I ask an appropriate someone’s help, when I am in this frame of mind, even the best advise can be met with ‘Ah but what if this or that happens, what will I do?’. I can come away as bewildered and confused as ever. When this occurs I must ‘get out of my head’ as it were. My thinking needs to be changed and quickly. I do this using a very simple method which, with practice, you too can master and overcome those overwhelming feelings associated with excessive worrying. Remember whatever you practice you get better at and if you practice often enough
NSWEAR
becomes a habit. Worrying is no different. Some people who worry a lot believe they are getting worse however they are actually getting better at worrying simply because they practice so often. The trick is to throw a spanner into the ‘worrying works’ and I find the following method useful in doing just that. Check which nostril you are breathing best out of. When you have established which one, use your index finger to push the side of this nostril to close it off. Breathe through only one nostril for as long as you can. You may think you are not getting enough air whilst doing this however this is the effect needed to ‘get you out of your head’ and ‘into your body’. If it gets too stressful simply let go of your closed nostril, recover breathing in and out
through the nose and start again. You will find the more you practice this the longer you will be able to do it. Remember it is necessary to feel a shortage of air whist doing this to get the maximum beneficial effect. You may also find that you can hear yourself breathing. Practice until your breathing is silent and you can tolerate a breath hunger for about 10 minutes at a time and repeat this exercise as often as you need. As usual I believe that conditioning with practice is the key to mastery rather than forcing the body past its’ limits. This approach applies here also. Take it easy at the start and even if you can only do it for very short periods initially, stay with it and reap the benefits. Starting to cough or finding it takes you more than a breath or two to calm breathing are indications that you have created too much of a breath shortage by holding for too long. Simply build the time up slowly by practicing shorter periods (even if you can manage only 2-3 seconds at a time) more often and this will improve. You may also experience a ‘cleansing’ effect like cold or flu symptoms initially. These too should disappear in a day or two. If in doubt consult your doctor before starting this exercise and stop the exercise if symptoms persist. It does require practice and it does require discipline on your part. It can be quite a challenge initially however the benefits I believe are well worth it. It works beautifully for me every time. I treat it as a sort of 10 minute meditation which focuses me on my breathing and clears my head of everything else. Have a go. Until the next time Tom Herron

Tues Oct 29th Balor Reps present Dark, raw folksy blues from an extraordinarily talented artist whose time has come. Cam Penner is a throwback to the old-time authentic travelling artist. At the age of 18 he left small town life to wander the highways and back roads of North America. He ended up in Chicago serving mystery soup and stale bread to 250 homeless men a day. Next came a women & children’s shelter, then youth shelters and detox centres. For 13 years he immersed himself in this subculture absorbing as much raw humanity as he could. When his shift was over he would spend endless cathartic hours writing and playing this guitar, exorcising his emotions through music. After becoming a self-taught expert on homelessness he is now a full time touring artist, homeless himself.

‘Early Doors’ – Six Happy Hours of Comedy Gold hang around long enough to run out of steam and ‘jump the shark’ just as ‘The Royle Family’ has done. It left us wanting more but 12 episodes is all we have and they are worth cherishing. If you haven’t had the pleasure, check the regular repeats on the appropriately, in this case, titled channel GOLD.
Every time someone mentions the classic John Cleese sitcom ‘Fawlty Towers’, chances are that one of their next sentences will make reference to the fact that only 12 episodes were ever made. In just 12 anarchic 30 minute episodes, the slapstick and chaotic goings-on at that fictional hotel in the seaside town of Torquay garnered more comedic value than most long-running, spirit-draining British sitcoms. ‘Early Doors’ is another British sitcom that lasted for just 12 episodes between May, 2003 and October 2004. Many are still unfamiliar with the show’s existence, instead being more familiar with, you could say, its big brother – ‘The Royle Family’. Jointly written by Craig Cash and Phil Mealey, ‘Early Doors’ is a low-key modern classic, taking the dowdy, naturalistic feel of ‘The Royle Family’, but placing it in a pub setting.

Scott (‘My Boys’) and, of course, Louis-Dreyfus herself, who is finally free from the long-standing shadow of her ‘Elaine’ character in the classic nineties sitcom ‘Seinfeld’.
The gently paced yet sharp comedy revolved around such everyday pub occurrences as blocked urinals, drawing the football card, pub quizzes, watering down the spirits and missing Maltesers. In just 12 episodes ‘Early Doors’ made the viewer care deeply for the characters, Landlord Ken has been left by his wife, but lives as they were all instantly identifiable and we with his daughter Melanie and mother Jean. saw a little of ourselves and indeed people we Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Vice President. ‘Veep’ was created by Armando Iannucci, who also writes and directs several episodes this series. Fellow directors for the second series include comedy heroes Chris Morris (‘The Day Today’, ‘Brass Eye’), Tim Kirkby (‘Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle’), Becky Martin (‘Peep Show’) and Chris Addison (‘The Thick Of It’). Just as with Iannucci’s ‘The Thick Of It’, ‘Veep’ satirises the inner workings of government, only this time in Washington, not Downing Street.‘Veep’ is certainly not a remake of ‘The Thick Of It’ and is much lighter in shade and on the profanity count. Given all the names associated with ‘Veep’ it seemed impossible to fail, which is exactly why there was the inherent fear that it might! While it doesn’t have a stand-out character like the menacing and controlling Malcolm Tucker, it doesn’t suffer for the lack of one either. With Iannucci at the helm, it is likely that what we’ve seen so far is just a warm up and Season Two could well see matters go up a gear or two. See for yourself every Wednesday at 10.30pm on Sky Atlantic.

This Sporting Life: Marty Gormley he insists, was at Omagh Town alongside Danny ‘Bomber’ Rouse. “I spent eight fantastic years with Omagh Town with Danny, definitely the best part of my playing career. I then went to play in Ardara for quite a few years,” he explains. Another period that Marty remembers very fondly was the golden era of the summer cups, where he had great success with Strabane side, Bridgend Celtic.
Marty Gormley is a name that has been synonymous with local football down through the years. This year has been a significant one, as not only has he come on board the Strabane Athletic coaching staff; he recently celebrated his 60th birthday. Time has certainly not diminished any of his passion for the sport, as the ‘Herald’ soon discovered speaking to the man himself following Strabane Athletic’s impressive 6-2 victory over Ballymena intermediate side, Newtown. We met a man who clearly loves what he does, who can wax lyrical all day long about the ‘beautiful game’ itself. “I’m really excited about Strabane Athletic and the way they are trying to do things both on and off the pitch,” he enthuses. “The minute we get the new pitch, things will really take off then. The club has only been in existence for three years but they are looking to the future. Marty Doherty, Declan McColgan and the rest of the lads are doing a fantastic job. They’re trying to build something for this town that unfortunately we never had. Strabane over the last thirty to forty years has produced some of the greatest footballers to ever come through in Northern Ireland. But this club is building for the future and please God I hope I’m here to see it!” Indeed, there wasn’t a lot of football in Sion Mills when Marty was growing up, however a team was established during his final year at primary school. This held him in good stead when he made the cross-over to secondary school and St Colman’s High School, where he played alongside great players such as Pat Donaghy and the late John McMullan at both junior and senior level. “After St Colman’s I played for a Derry and Dis-

“That was one fabulous team in the late ’70s and early ’80s. It was run out of the Bridgend Bar with help from the likes of Jim McDaid, Raymond Barr, Martin Donaghy, Willie Ferry, Danny Devenney and big ‘Horse’ Gallagher. We won eight cups in one year in 1982. We won in places like Buncrana, Cranford and Lifford, where we beat Buncrana 2-0 in the final with the prize-money being £1000. Overall I must’ve been involved with over 30 summer cup winning sides but that Bridgend Celtic side was a stand-out for me. It included the likes of Robbie Houston, Peter McNally, Danny Rouse and ‘Steaker’ Kelly. They were some side! The summer cups were a big thing in those days. It all sort of disappeared as the eighties moved on. You would’ve played nearly every night of the week, be it in Cranford, Derry, Moville, Buncrana, Castlederg, anywhere. It was just great,” Marty proudly recalls.
trict Select team and then the late Danny Rouse got me down to Derry City and I played there for a year or two. I then joined Finn Harps, who were managed by Pasty McGowan at the time. For three years I played at Finn Park alongside great players like Tony O’Doherty, Brendan Bradley and Jim Sheridan,” Marty recalls.
Coaching
It was after this period that Marty began to get into coaching and soon got fully qualified with his coaching badges. Since then he has been coaching at excellence programmes, Under-16 Northern Ireland Schoolboys, Sion Swifts and for nine years with Tyrone Under-17s in the annual Milk Cup Danny ‘Bomber’ Rouse competition. Coach with the Ulster Under-18 representative team. If all that wasn’t enough, he is also coaching at Drumkeen, alongside his new role at Strabane Athletic. “The Milk Cup years were an amazing time for me and indeed for young Strabane lads, many of whom are now part of the Strabane Athletic setup. Great local talent like Jason McGrinder, Sean Ferry, Liam McMenamin, and Fergal McGavigan all came through the Tyrone Milk Cup sides I coached and are now playing for Strabane. Those were fabulous years,” Marty reflects. With the future of home-grown talent being a burning issue for Ireland, both north and south, England, Scotland and Wales at present, we were interested to find out Marty’s views on what direction we should be going, with many suggesting the implementation of techniques proven to be successful in Spain, Holland, Germany and now Belgium. He remains a fan of 11-a-side games at a younger level. “I’ve never really been a fan of five-a-sides or six-a-sides. Yes, they’re getting lots of touches of the ball but I’ve always felt that the sooner we get our young players playing in a system the more beneficial it will be to the national team and other governing bodies at a later date. I think it’s more beneficial to teach our players how to play football at a young age, from Primary Six or Seven. Try and get them playing at that age, rather than waiting until they’re 13 or 14. That’s just my philosophy on it,” he explains. Meanwhile, it’s back to the business of the local game for Marty. He is as engrossed in football today as he has always been and when chatting to the man it is clear that he truly loves the game. That passion is certain to be a valued asset to all at Strabane Athletic, where the future is indeed looking bright.

Flann O’Brien Literary Festival hailed a Major Success
Cross border event attracts visitors from as far away as Glasgow
Organisers of the ‘Flann O’Brien Literary Arts Festival’ were delighted to welcome hundreds of “flannoraks” to the festival in Strabane and Lifford, which was hailed as an enormous success. Over three days, audiences from as far away as Glasgow were treated to a feast of entertainment, literary discussions and visual treats featuring all things Flann O’Brien. The cross-border event, which took place at various venues in Lifford and Strabane on October 3rd to 5th, was part of the ‘Reconciliation through the Riverine’ project funded by the International Fund for Ireland and managed by Donegal County Council in collaboration with Strabane District Council. The festival celebrated the life and works of one of the key players in 20th century Irish literature, Flann O’Brien, who was born Brian O’Nolan in Strabane. Speaking about the festival, Joe Boland Co-Chair of the Riverine Forum said, ‘It has been our pleasure to support the Flann O’Brien Literary Festival; we are delighted to see that the festival has been such a success and has reached out to a wide variety of people; we hope that this important festival will continue to grow in the years to come.” The festival kicked off on Thursday 3rd October with a special performance of Flann’s Yer Only Man, where members of the public and local secondary school pupils saw actor Val O’Donnell perform a wide range of extracts from the humorist’s work. On the same day the winners of the Flann O’Brien Doodle Pic competition were announced,
which saw young Catherine McLoughlin from Cloughfin win first prize from an entry of 150 doodles. Friday’s night’s performance of Colin Reid’s music and spoken word presentation of O’Brien’s masterpiece The Third Policeman, was followed by the launch of “The Houses of Flann O’Brien” at the Old Courthouse in Lifford, a photo-journal about Brian Conway and Mickey Mullin’s visit to the places where Flann lived. A packed house turned out to the launch, which was followed by some great live music and verse from one of Ireland’s most sought-after live bands, “The Logues”. A lively panel discussion took place in the Courthouse in on Saturday 5th October; this was chaired by Frank McNally of the Irish Times, and a distinguished group of literary experts – Adrian Naughton of UCD, Tess Maginess and Eamonn Naughton of Queen’s University, extolled the virtues of Flann to an attentive audience. This was followed by selected readings by bestselling author Brian McGilloway at Strabane Library. Prior to the final show at the Alley, the third in a series of short Flann O’Brien films was projected onto Lifford Community Centre, making many a passer-by stop and stare. The festival had a fitting finale on Saturday night with the outrageously funny Delicious O’Grady,

a tragicomedy set in the time of the Great Irish Famine. An emotional Colm “Delicious” O’Grady got a rousing standing ovation from an appreciative audience to end the festival on a high. Speaking after the show, Logan Mc Cool, Chairman of the Festival organisers the de Selby Institute said: “we have been overwhelmed by the success of this year’s festival, which appears to have put
Strabane’s Flann O’Brien connection firmly on the literary map. Apart from having visitors come to the festival from Scotland, we had numerous enquiries and wishes of good luck from Flann fans from as far away as Germany and Quebec. This has given us great encouragement to build on these successes for next year’s festival”.

West Tyrone Sinn Fein MLA Michaela Boyle has been assured by the Post Office Senior Stakeholder Manager that alternative arrangements will be put in place for customers while Strabane’s main Post Office based in Supervalue in the town is closed for refurbishment from Monday 4 November until Tuesday 12 November. She said, “I very much welcome the news that the town’s main Post office is to undergo a major refurbishment the details of which were disclosed at a stakeholder event organised by the Post office which I attended. “The refurbishment is about changing the Main Street Branch into one of its new main style branches and when completed it will mean: an improved modern environment for customers; and extended opening hours on a Saturday (8:30am-5:30pm) which will greatly assist the many working people who currently cannot access our local post office services. Hopefully this investment will also help increase footfall in Supervalue and the wider town centre. “The only concerns I had where in relation to what alternative arrangements would be put in place for customers when the temporary closure of the Branch occurs next month. I have been in touch once again with the Senior Stakeholder Manager who has assured me that he has a commitment that additional resources will be available at both the Melmount Road and Sion Mills Post Office Branches to facilitate the projected increase in customers that both branches will have during the Main Street branch closure.

fresh salmon or white trout (sea trout). Also, it is close to the centre of town, St. Pat’s Hall, Immaculate Conception Chapel, Barrack Street School and Strabane Health Centre, making it a convenient place for my parents to raise a large family. A great memory of Strabane? The flood, in 1987, is still a vivid memory for me today. I was fifteen years old at that time and I couldn’t get to school because much of Bridge street was flooded, blocking my way to St. Colman’s. I soon met up with a few friends and began to make our way towards the square. Even to this day, the images of people paddling canoes, and British army boats floating around the town centre is something that I will never forget. Something you miss about Strabane? One thing I miss about Strabane is the vibrant music scene. Events like Strabane Unplugged and Sounds Like Summer have been a fantastic opportunity for local musicians to play to local people. When I was living in Strabane, I would always try to make it to The Pool Bar on the first Monday of each
month; that is when Strabane Unplugged is held. Each time I went, I always heard great music, so I miss that over the past three years. Something Strabane has that your new home doesn’t have. Less people! What important factors do you think anyone thinking of moving abroad should consider Definitely do your research. Get to know about the cultural and traditional customs of the native people, what kind of food is available, climate of the area and try to learn some of the local language before arriving. Of course, I didn’t do any of the above but as long as your open minded and ready for a new experience it will be easier easier. Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? Maybe one day, you just never know! Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future. I would love to see a local athlete win a gold medal at the Olympics.
Raymond and his lovely wife Lingmon
One of the best things about Strabane For me, the best thing about Strabane is the many great people and characters that you can really only know by living there. Whether it’s a shoulder to lean on or a good laugh, there’s usually someone that can help out. Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane? I plan to go home next June. Until then, I’ll have been in China for three years and eight months and a lot has happened to me here in that time. I got married recently to a Chinese woman and we’re now expecting to have our first child, which is due in five weeks time. So, apart from meeting loved ones, I will be looking forward to introducing my wife and baby boy to their family in Strabane.

Young people from Sion Mills Community Association have participated in a dynamic new art exhibition at Titanic Belfast exploring and challenging attitudes to disability. The ARTitude exhibition is the culmination of a youth arts summer scheme organised by Adapt NI in which 240 young people aged 6-18 engaged in a series of workshops looking at how disability is perceived in society. Adapt NI’s Development Manager Caroline Shiels said the workshops encouraged young people of all abilities to look at key issues around accessibility and transport “It enabled them to understand and experience equality through inclusion and to explore artistic skills as a medium to change perceptions on disability, equality and young people’s expectations”. “We are enthusiastic that this exhibition will provide an opening to share good practice and for others to find out about how Access Exchange, a new membership network endorses the business case for Disability Equality.” The theme of this year’s programme was ‘My Journey’, which sparked discussions around access, independence and transport issues inspiring creative imagery and a diverse selection of colourful art work. All activities were facilitated by experienced local artists, using the arts to inspire and build con-
fidence for young people to be the protagonists of change in societal attitudes to disability. Artist Caroline Jeffery captured the tone of the project: ‘Everyone participated with great enthusiasm and really seemed to enjoy themselves, not only in the making but also in the discussions the theme generated.’ Belfast Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir was on hand to help launch the exhibition. He said: “The creativity shown in the artwork on display is wonderful. These young people have a real natural flair and this exhibition is a fantastic way of showcasing their talents. Adapt NI is carrying out important work in changing the stereotypes attached to disabled people. I applaud their efforts and support their good work into the future.” The workshops took place from June to August to enable the development of creative and technical skills and provide a forum for new partnerships to form where participants of all abilities encouraged and recognised each other’s talent. Each year the inclusive theme is developed and an environmental arts workshop at An Creagan enabled groups from urban and rural backgrounds to partner up have fun and promote mutual understanding. The exhibition will run at the Andrews Gallery, Titanic Belfast until 14th Oct 2013. For more information go to www.adaptni.org

I CAN HELP YOU IMPROVE YOUR GAME! Call me now on 07526440951
The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Golfers 1. They practice in right way: Life is short. So why anyone would want to spend hundreds of hours trying to improve in the wrong way is crazy. Beating ball after ball at the same target at the driving range and coming away thinking you’ve mastered the game only takes you backwards. How many golfers wish they could take their range game to the course? 99% of them. The other 1% (the elite), practice in a way that is challenging and simulates course conditions. Hitting a bucket of balls to the same target over and over is easy and it’s nothing like playing on the course. The top players make every second count when practicing, so they’re working all areas of the game to the max. The first thing to do in trying to get better at golf is to think about the way you practice, and change your routine. Make practice hard and challenge yourself.
2. They Stay in the Present: Staying in the present means that you give whatever you are doing your complete, undivided attention. E.g. if you are playing with your kids, that’s all you’re doing, not thinking about work. In golf, this means your’re not thinking about your score, how your playing partners might be judging your performance, why you think you just sliced that shot or 3 putted the last hole. All your energy is on the shot at hand and then enjoying the walk in between. It’s easy to see how counter-productive it is not
to be in the present – just think back to your last round where you started playing well and subsequently thought about shooting your best score, only for your game started to unravel. Being solely in the present is easier said than down I know (like everything else it takes practice), but there are good techniques to prevent these tension causing shifts in thinking.
6. They know how to calm themselves down when the pressure is on. I’ve worked with enough players to know that the good ones know powerful techniques to calm themselves down to prevent nerves turning into panic and negatively affecting performance. There are many ways to do this such as breathing techniques for golf or having special thoughts/places to go in your head in between shots.
3. They continually work on the fundamentals: Good players understand the importance of the fundamentals as it’s the foundation for a good golf swing. How you grip the club, how far you stand from the ball, how good your posture is, how good your ball position is and how well you align and are all way more important than just trying to swing the club correctly. The fundamentals need to be worked on continuously as it’s easy to get into bad habits – even the best players have to do so.
A drop in form and focus can happen to the best players in the World - Rory McIlroy is having difficulty regaining his form. He needs to focus on the basics which got him to where he is today. These tips may help Rory!
4. They play with visualization and feel, not swing mechanics
5. They work on a highly repeatable routine
The eyes are probably the golfer’s most important asset. The top players are always picking small targets and imagining how the shot will look. How clearly you define your target and your shot shape before playing each shot will have a huge impact on how well you execute it. When you practice and play golf, become aware of the feelings of shots e.g. ask yourself when you hit a fade how that felt.
The top players in the world all go through the exact same routine before every shot, even down to the number of practice swings. Watch the top players in the world and you’d notice that the number of seconds it takes to go through their preshot routine is the same every time. The shot routine is something I cover in the Golf State of Mind Talk next month - Shaun. Game Improvement Training program.
7. They know the power of acceptance and moving on Being able to accept every shot whatever the outcome is an attribute that all the top players possess. Although very difficult to achieve, the optimal state for golf would be if you could become emotionally indifferent to good and bad shots. GMAC tells himself as part of his pre-shot routine that although he has a positive intention for the shot, if it doesn’t go where he wants it to, it’s better to accept it and move on, than get upset. Try verbalizing this in your head before your next shot. Become aware of these things and make sure you make every second of practice and playing time count! Practice in the right way and you will see continuous improvement.

Big Fight Night a Massive Success! Strabane Athletic’s ‘Big Fight Night’ proved to be a massive success on September 28 at the Fir Trees. After months of training, trash talk and drinking of raw eggs, the lean, pale pugilists were ready to do battle. First up, Marty ‘The Candle’ Doc defeated John ‘Big Jake’ Blee, with the candle lit for ‘Doc’ at Melmount chapel clearly working a treat. Raymond ‘Boyle-Buster’ Barr and Terry ‘Barr-Crusher’ Boyle followed with the most dramatic draw since Balboa v ‘Thunderlips’. Mark ‘Dinky the Destroyer’ O’ Reilly got the edge over fierce rival Conor ‘The Ginga Ninja’ Gallagher and Neil ‘Mo Chara’ Edwards danced his way to victory against Johnnie ‘The Bodysnatcher’ McCrory. ‘Leethal’ Lee Conwell could not overcome Fergal ‘Windmills’ McGavigan, who rumour has it, powered the function hall personally during the
fight. Aaron ‘Why Always Me’ Patterson resigned Steven ‘The Power’ Taylor to the BDO, while Warner ‘Wagner’ Mullen’s defeat of Sean ‘The White Hulk’ Elliott was inevitable because when the Hulk’s white, he’s Bill Bixby, not Lou Ferrigno! Paddy ‘Lights Out’
