Blepharitis is an inflammation of your eyelids. It can make eyelids and eyelashes red and crusty and make your eyes feel irritated or itchy. It can also lead to burning, soreness or stinging in your eyes. Symptoms tend to be worse on the morning when you wake up and your lids may be stuck together. This is a chronic condition so although you may clear it it can come back.

McHugh appeals for safe and responsible use of fireworks Derg Sinn Féin councillor Ruairi McHugh has appealed for the safe and responsible use of fireworks this Halloween. Cllr McHugh said: “By all means enjoy the festivities at Halloween, but be safe and do not let what should be a bit of fun turn into a nightmare, the consequences of which could be scars or disfigurement, which last a life time. Not only are fireworks dangerous, but they are also very expensive to buy. I would encourage children and their families to enjoy fireworks at public fireworks displays conducted by professionals rather than purchase fireworks for home or private use. The annual firework display in Castlederg hosted by Churchtown Community Centre will take place on Thursday 30th October at 9pm at the entry to Hillview Park. I would encourage people to attend this event. The reality is that thousands of fireworks are being sold illegally. In many cases the people selling these fireworks are deliberately targeting young people. In turn a lot of young

Strabane talks ‘Horror’ Movies!
Aiden Devenny

Paul Dunne
As we approach Halloween, many of us are partial to digging out the old classic Horror DVDs or videos for a good traditional scare-feast. With that in mind, the ‘Herald’ took to the streets to find out what your all time favourite Horror movies are. “For me it would be between the original versions of ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and ‘Evil Dead’. There are some pretty gruesome scenes in there. Cannibals and moving trees! They’ve been often emulated but never bettered in my opinion. Nowadays it’s all predictable slasher movies.” Aiden Devenney “I can still remember seeing ‘Psycho’ for the first time at the pictures. The audience were all screaming during that famous shower scene. I knew something bad was going to happen at some point but I really wasn’t expecting that. All that blood on the tiles and
in the bloodied water running down the But it’s got to be ‘The Exorcist’ for me, drain. You don’t forget that in a hurry!” followed closely by ‘Mamma Mia’!” Colleen Kelly, pictured with her Enda McCosker grandson Jordan Kelly. “A film from a few years ago called “The Exorcist’ is a film that has always ‘Teeth’ really freaked me out. Withstayed with me, especially the scene out going too much into it or giving where the girl’s head spins round. You anything away for anyone who hasn’t don’t forget that in a hurry. There was seen it, it’ll make any man squirm in nothing else like it back in the day and discomfort. That should say it all!” as an audience it scared the life out of Gavin McElroy us. They knew how to make a scary movie “’Rosemary’s Baby’ followed closely in the 70s. I like Hitchcock movies too. by a Spanish Horror from a few years There’s nothing scarier than what’s back called ‘The Orphanage’. ‘Rosebehind the door. He was a master of mary’s Baby’ is one weird movie and the implied sense of fear. you really don’t know what’s coming
next. The director, Roman Polanski, manages to grip the viewer without being particularly graphic or violent. The film is from 1968 but still stands the test of time.” Chris Sharkey “I saw ‘The Exorcist’ in the old cinema in Newtownstewart back in the 70s and I’ll tell you this, I had bother sleeping after it! People were in a state of shock leaving the cinema after just watching this little girl being possessed, twisting and contorting, vomiting up all sorts of stuff and speaking in that voice. It definitely shook me!” Paul Dunne

Christmas in the Trenches
Bare Bodkin Theatre Company presents: The Great Hunger by Patrick Kavanagh Conal Gallen brings his hilarious hit comedy play ‘A Bit on the Side’ to the Alley Theatre for one night only on Saturday 1st November.
Peter Duffy is to star in ‘The Great Hunger’ by Patrick Kavanagh Irish Poet/Novelist at the Alley Theatre on Friday 7th November. This is generally considered to be Patricks Kavanagh’s finest work, it protagonist is bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire who has spent years at his mother’s beck and call. When she finally dies aged 91, he himself is 65 and has missed the boat in terms of finding a wife and having a family of his own, a source of acute sorrow and regret to him. Peter Duffy himself grew up on a small Monaghan farm so has a ready affinity to Kavanagh’s material which informs and shines through his absorbing interpretation of the work. Peter Duffy’s one-man performance of the poem is as epic as the work...softly spoken, with despair and regret pouring out of his being, Duffy hypnotise his audience; constantly drawing us into his tale. He captures all the lyricism of the verse and the emptiness of a man who has stood guard over an empty castle for far too long. Waterford News and Star. Tickets are £7, £5 (con)

The effect of acupuncture during Pregnancy/IVY and labour Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.

Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help

As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Allstate NI celebrates 10 years in Strabane Allstate NI plays a strategic role in developing, transforming and maintaining the various technology platforms used within America’s largest publically held personal lines, property and casualty insurer: The Allstate Corporation.

After more than 15 years in business, Allstate NI is Northern Ireland’s largest IT Company with 2,300 plus employees across three different sites in Belfast, Londonderry and Strabane. Allstate Northern Ireland opened its Strabane location in 2004 after piloting a very successful business process outsourcing and call centre operation out of its Belfast office. It was decided that to grow that part of the organization, a new office location would need to be found with access to a larger workforce, rather than competing with the market in Belfast. Strabane was an ideal choice as it is close to the high population bases of Derry, Letterkenny, Omagh and Donegal, and Strabane itself had a good base of unemployed, but very capable, people.
Local Employment Ten years later the Strabane office has gone from strength to strength, employing over 500 people from the local area and becoming one of the largest employers in the North West. To celebrate this significant milestone, employees at the Orchard Road sites enjoyed a week-long event to celebrate the 10 year anniversary. The event was opened by Jerry Correa, Senior Leader, Operations, visiting for the week from Roanoke, Virginia and Peter Barber, Area Leader, Operations. The official cutting of the anniversary cake took place amidst a gallery of photos taken throughout the 10 years, which were on display in the Front Foyer of the Main Building. Strabane Radio were

The event drew to a close with a Townhall Address by Carla Zuniga, Senior Vice President of Operations to Strabane staff from Home Office in Chicago, with congratulations from Allstate Senior Leadership, which included an Awards Ceremony to 33 employees receiving their 10 year service medals. Bro McFerran, Vice President and Managing Director of Allstate Northern Ireland said, “It is a fantastic achievement to be celebrating 10 years of Allstate Northern Ireland in Strabane. Young Strabane woman elected to NIYF Executive Committee A young Strabane woman has been elected on to the new Northern Ireland Youth Forum (NIYF) Executive Committee. A Level student, Kate Fahy, 18, was one of 17 candidates selected from an original group of 46 to work towards implementing the NIYF’s new ‘vision 2020’ strategy which will see the next generation having more influence over the political process. Kate is passionate about the participation of young people in politics but believes that too many of the current generation are politically unaware through no fault of their own. “I aim through my position as Trustee on the NIYF Executive to implement political awareness schemes. I also hope to give the Youth of NI a voice, as too often young people are either ignored or silent. “In the future I hope to pursue a career in Law, with a particular focus on Human Rights issues.” Among the key issues is the ongoing campaign for votes at 16. With the Stormont Assembly due to debate the issue, the NIYF will be intensifying its lobbying of MLAs to support increased suffrage for younger people. NIYF Director Chris Quinn said the election marked a new era for the organisation with a renewed commitment to campaign for the sort of changes that will lead to the creation of a peaceful and more tolerant society. “We had an unprecedented number of young people standing this year - a total of 46. The young people have agreed that one of the priority areas of work over the coming months will be votes at 16. They believe there needs to be change in Northern Ireland to build a stable and lasting peace and young people must be part of the decision-making process.”
Kate Fahy
He added that the recent Scottish Referendum election which included 16 and 17-year-olds voting for the first time showed that most young people were politically engaged and understand the issues that affect them. “The introduction of Votes at 16 helped to energise the political debate in Scotland by including a whole new generation of young people who are politically informed and concerned about their future. We believe that extending the voting age in Northern Ireland will encourage our young people to have more of a stake in society.” Over the next year, the NIYF will also work for the introduction of Youth Zones for shared educational campuses; promote the voice of young people who have been involved in the justice system; host a debate on a proposed motion to legalise cannabis; and develop a large scale youth led programme that will effect real and lasting peace. For more information about the Northern Ireland Youth Forum, its aims and objectives and the members of its new Executive Committee go to www.niyf.org

The S.P.I.R.I.T. team on a recent outing, trying to pick up on some paranormal activity.
Halloween is not just a time to dress up and hit the town. For some, it’s a chance to binge on some classic horror and for others it may even be a chance to dip their toes into the world of the paranormal. For some however, the world of the paranormal and the unexplained is not just for Halloween. It is, in fact, a passionate interest that they carry with them all year long.
Look carefully at this photo - you can see white orbs.

A group has been established in Strabane for those who share such an interest. S.P.I.R.I.T (Strabane Paranormal Investigation Reality Insight Team) investigates paranormal activity around the local area and takes trips to investigate other noted areas where supernatural activity has been reported. The group has also set-up a Facebook page (www. facebook.com/groups/spiritstrabane) and for the season that’s in it, the ‘Herald’ thought it would catch up with two members of the group, Mark Diver and Catherine Doherty, who are also administrators of the Facebook page and find out a little more about the group. The family set off by ship for America but even then, to their horror, the poltergeist continued its “The paranormal is just something that has always terrible deeds in their cabin and even followed interested me,” explains Mark. “I guess the main them to their new home. The group recently did an investigation at the old Mill in Sion. They picked up some activity there as well, as Catherine explains. “Apparently there’s a man called James who haunts the Mill. One member of our group, who was initially a sceptic, felt a presence in one of the rooms and when he switched on a light there was a figure moving in front of him. We also asked for a sign if there were any spirits present and we then heard banging.”
The group is keeping their eyes open all the time and always looking for new locations. A few people have even contacted them to check out their houses for activity. They are also planning a trip to Leap Castle in Offaly. A popular legend states that the Castle is haunted by a supernatural entity known as an Elemental. The alleged entity is known as “It”. The group is self-funded and they pay for all their own equipment. Unlike some who are drawn to the paranormal world, S.P.I.R.I.T. has no interest in black magic or conjuring dark forces. “We would never get involved with Ouija boards or anything like that,” stresses Mark. “If anyone gets involved in that stuff they’re out of the team. We’re not about that. We just record sounds, try to capture footage and gather evidence. It’s something we all enjoy and it’s something that fascinates us, so why not pursue what makes you happy?”
The group is getting also into the Halloween spirit by hosting a fundraising outing in aid of the Drumrallagh Housing Association. They plan to take anyone interested out on an excursion along the local Burn and show them how their hi-tech electronic devises work. “With it being Halloween we thought we’d have a few surprises along the way in keeping with the season. It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you what though,” laughs Mark. “It’ll be fun and safe. We’ve checked that area with our equipment and there is nothing there to be afraid of, so people don’t have to worry. It’ll be a bit of craic with a few seasonal scares that you’d expect for this time of the year and all for a good cause. Everyone is welcome,” he added. So who knows who might appear? Freddy? Jason? Leatherface? If so, who’re you gonna call?

TotalMusic As we reach the cigarette butt end of 2014 ‘Total Music’ thought it would be worthwhile to see what 2015 has in store gigwise. After looking at a few of the shows announced, something came to mind – 2015 is already looking pretty good for the music fan of, to put it politely, a certain vintage! So with that in mind, here’s a little guide to just a taste of what next year holds for you mum/dad rockers and former New Romantics. Noel Gallagher will return to Belfast with his High Flying Birds for a gig in the Odyssey Arena on March 3.
be playing Nottingham, Glasgow, and Manchester, culminating with a performance at London’s O2 Arena. It looks like Noel will be busy with his High Flying Birds for most of 2015. With 2016 marking the 20th anniversary of Oasis headlining Knebworth, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume that Noel has a packed diary for the next few years. Neil Diamond, believe it or not, has never played Belfast!
Bryan Ferry
After an impressive set of performances around the world throughout 2014 including the lauded Glastonbury and Coachella appearances, Mr Slick himself, Bryan Ferry has announced a tour in May and June 2015, which includes a Belfast date at the Waterfront on May 6. The newly announced dates will feature an incredible set list of both Roxy Music and solo hits, and include That will change in 2015. The songs from Ferry’s forthcoming iconic Grammy Award winning new album ‘Avonmore’ (released Singer/Songwriter and Rock Nov 17th). and Roll Hall of Fame member Spandau Ballet will be bringing his highly anticipated 2015 tour to Europe next summer. Kicking off in Cologne, Germany on June 17 and ending at the O2 Arena in London on July 14, the European leg of the 2015 tour will hit 11 cities throughout Europe, including Diamond’s first ever show in Belfast on June 30 at the Odyssey Arena and his Staying in the evening jacket first show in Paris since 1978. mode, reformed New Romantics The show will feature songs from Spandau Ballet will play Dublin’s his newest studio album ‘Melody 3Arena (formerly the 02, formerly Road’, as well as many classic the Point!) on March 3 followed by a performance at Belfast’s favourites.
Neil Diamond
Earlier this month, Gallagher announced the completion and release date of the brand new Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album, ‘Chasing Yesterday’ on Sour Mash Records. The announcement was made during a live Q and A streamed on Facebook and hosted by BBC 6 Music’s Matt Everitt. ‘Chasing Yesterday’ is released on March 2, 2015 and will be available on CD, Deluxe CD, vinyl and digitally. The album can now be pre-ordered. The first single from the album, ‘In The Heat Of The Moment’ is released on November 17 digitally and on limited edition 7 inch vinyl with a B-side entitled ‘Do The Damage’. Gallagher also announced that his band will embark on a run of arena dates in March to coincide with the album release. Aside from Belfast, the band will also
Those Ghosts set for mini-tour and new EP
Odyssey on March 4. Expect all their hits from the 80s like ‘True’, ‘Gold’, ‘Through The Barricades’ and ‘To Cut A Long Story Short’. Something tells us a ticket for this will be a nice Christmas present for many a mum, wife and, yes, at this point, even granny! If Spandau Ballet is not mum, wifey or granny’s thing, then maybe Lionel Richie is. He’ll be getting his groove on and serving up the piano ballads on March 10 at Belfast’s Odyssey and at Dublin’s 3Arena the very next night. It’s part of the ‘All The Hits, All Night Long’ Tour and it’ll do exactly what it says on the tin. A far cry from the fretless bass slickness of Spandau Ballet or masked Metal beasts Slipknot, who are coming back to Ireland in January 2015 – supported by Korn. The bands will be hitting the 3Arena in Dublin on January 14. Slipknot’s Corey Taylor said, “It has always been very special for us over there. In a lot of ways, it’s where this insanity began. So, for this tour, we decided to try and hit as many places as we could. We’re coming back for the people who started this for us: that would be YOU. Prepare yourselves… Hell is coming.” More veterans of the rock, pop and metal world are sure to announce Irish dates for 2015 in the weeks and months to come. Some of the names we’re expecting to hear from include AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac and, of course, U2. The residents around Croke Park have been alerted!
Strabane rockers Those Ghosts officially release their latest EP ‘Delays’ on November 24 across a number of digital platforms. They have also announced of series of live dates for November and December, where you will be able to get your hands on some limited edition hard-copies of the EP. The band will be appearing at Voodoo in Belfast as part of fellow ‘Strabanimals’ White Male Actors’ E.P launch. They hit Belfast again on November 14 (Venue TBC) and go to Letterkenny on November 21 for a gig in the Green Room. The very next night sees them return home to Strabane for a gig in Dicey Rileys. On December 6 they travel up the road to Omagh (Venue TBC) and then hit Masons in Derry on December 12. Earlier this month, the band’s song ‘We’’ll Take Time’ was Radio Ulster’s Across The Line’s ‘Track of the Day’. The ATL’s blog said: “Yet another act of note from Strabane - where apparently one in three people are in a band. Their sound is huge and ambitious, built to fill mega-domes and soundtrack the closing scenes in epic Hollywood’s blockbusters. And why wouldn’t they aim high?” Why not indeed! Check out the track here: https:// soundcloud.com/those-ghosts/well-take-time. Cruise Holidays – A Guide for First-Timers – Dispelling the Myths! Many people are deterred from trying a holiday afloat because of ill-founded notions of what it’s going to be like but with almost 2 million Brits a year taking a cruise and so many offers about, there’s never been a better time to try your first cruise holiday.
Winter Warmer Cruise Portuguese Cities and the Canaries 14 nights from £826.00 per person (5th January 2015 departure)
All Inclusive Mediterranean Fly-Cruise ex Belfast 7 nights from £750.00 per person (Based on May 2015 departure)
Cruising could be viewed as the Marmite of the travel world – loved by most who have tried it and dismissed by many who haven’t! One in every eight foreign package holidays is now a cruise, making it the fastest-growing sector of the holiday industry.
Orlando & Caribbean Cruise – Fly ex Belfast From £1335.00 per person 3 nights in Orlando 7 night Caribbean Cruise
(Based on 7th May 2015 departure)
What makes it so popular? Access – stick a pin into any blue area on a world map and the chances are you can get there by cruise ship. The best way to reach many off-the-beaten track destinations is by expedition ship and in Burma, where hotels can’t keep pace with demand, taking a river cruise could ensure that you see a fast-changing country sooner rather than later. New ports, itineraries and destinations along with continuing innovations on board, continue to fire interest among regular and first time cruisers alike. This along with the massive diversity of itineraries and themes – wine, astrology, am-dram, photography, yoga and dance to name but a few – offered by the various cruise companies means that finding a cruise that suits you has never been easier. If you are still not convinced perhaps this cruise myth buster may help you make up your mind! Page 4 September 2013 The Herald
The Myths and the Truth! 1. I will get sea sick! While it is true that bad weather can strike at any time, modern-day technologies and stabilisers are making this les and les likely. If prone to this take precautions (pressure bands, drugs or natural remedies) or pick itinerary that hugs the coast or choose a ship that‘s designed for ocean travel, not cruising and also try to get allocated a midship cabin. 2. I’ll be surrounded by pensioners... The average of a cruise in Europe is 54 but on a worldwide basis only 45 years. It is true that older or retired people (i.e those who have the time) tend to be on passengers on longer sailing but on shorter durations you’ll find cruisers from 20 years upwards.
3. I won’t spend enough time in port, or get a sense of the places I’m visiting...
5. I’ll get bored! This is very unlikely as the buzzword in cruising in ‘enrichment; with diversions at every turn. There Most ships offer excursion option in each port are opportunities to learn anything from fencing, to cater for different tastes and physical abilities. improve your photography skills, learn Spanish, Cruise-and-stay packages and extended stays in immerse yourself in yoga or join the cast of the port are also becoming increasingly popular. Archers in a drama class! 4. Dinners will be formal and I’ll have to sit with the same people all the time… Most of the larger lines offer more flexible and informal dining option than they used to with open-seating policies in their main restaurants. Most cruise lines rule out shorts, flip-flots or t-shirts for dinner but that is also true of many restaurants ashore. On majority of cruises black tie is now optional.
6. It’s an expensive mistake if I don’t like it... Cruising has long ceased to be an exclusive holiday – nearly four in every 10 cruises cost under £1000. Factor in that fly-cruises include flights, transfers, meals and, often, entertainment and you’ve little left to budget for. More and more cruise lines are also offering all-inclusive drinks packages. Many of the cruise lines are also offering shorter cruises which are helping to lure first-timer cruisers.

After the Scottish Referendum the drive to reduce the voting age gathers pace
Will 16 year olds be going to the polls? The issue of 16 and 17 year olds having the right to vote is working its way up the political agenda in Northern Ireland after the Scottish referendum. The 3.6 million votes cast in Scotland last month included more than 100,000 by 16 and 17-year-olds. The decision to allow them to have a say on independence has led to debate over whether the voting age should be lowered to 16 for other
polls. At Stormont, four out of the five executive parties want to make 16 the voting age. The Alliance Party, SDLP, Ulster Unionist Party and Sinn Féin would back the move. The ‘Herald’ spoke to local community activist Corey French, who is a former Member of Youth Parliament for West Tyrone and has been politically active since he was a student at Holy Cross College. He is firmly of the belief that the voting age, currently at 18, should be lowered to sixteen. “When young people turn 16 they’re allowed to get a job, allowed to move away from home, allowed a national insurance number, allowed to join the army but they’re not allowed a vote,” he said.
Maturity? “There are two arguments regarding the voting age. A number of Unionists that I have debated with are of the belief that 16 year olds would not be mature enough to use their vote properly. When I was West Tyrone MYP we argued that even

if they don’t use their vote at least give them the right to go to the polling station. You can’t force anyone to vote, you can only encourage people. If (16/17 year olds) wanted to vote they would and not giving them that opportunity sends out all the wrong signals.” The broad stereotype of teenagers
having no connection with local politics is not one that Mr French necessarily agrees with and he is of the belief that teenagers could surprise the cynics. “Young people are smart. A lot of people my age would have a great interest and knowledge of politics in Northern Ireland. If we give

16/17 year olds the right to vote it could encourage them to get more involved in the decision making process. For example, if there was another Council or Assembly election coming up and young people did have the right to vote, you might be surprised to see how many would turn up at the polling stations,” he explained. In recent years several countries have given the vote to 16-yearolds and up. These include Austria, Argentina and Brazil. Sixteen is also the voting age in elections in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. Deciding the voting age in Northern Ireland still rests with Westminster, not Stormont. Prime Minister David Cameron said the Conservatives would keep it at 18. But if a Labour government is elected next year, Ed Miliband has promised to give 16 and 17-year-olds the vote. The Liberal Democrats also support the idea. “I’ve never been as glad to see that most of the Northern Ireland Assembly support the idea. Sinn Fein, SDLP, the Alliance Party and the Green Party support it, however it doesn’t have the full support of some of the Unionists just yet. The discussion is taking place, so hopefully the right decision will be made,” Mr French concluded.

‘I’m a slim new mum!’ Charlotte Easton, 22, lost over 4 stones with Slimming World - then she fell pregnant! Determined to get her pre-baby body back, she re-joined Slimming World and now she’s more than 5st 10lbs lighter and a happy, hands-on mum. Here’s her amazing story..... “When my partner Matthew pulled me into the pub “for a quick game of snooker” on my 21st, I should have known something was afoot. I was about to protest that it wasn’t my idea of celebrating, until all of a sudden I was surrounded by grinning friends and family. “As I mingled with my surprise party guests, feeling confident and attractive in my size-10 dress, I couldn’t help but think about the other big surprise life had thrown at me the year before, when I discovered I was expecting a very unplanned baby. The timing was terrible – I’d just lost more than 4st at Slimming World, Matthew and I had moved into our first home and I had a university place lined up to study midwifery. And I’d been taking the pill. “For most of my pregnancy, I felt pretty miserable. I left my Slimming World group because I couldn’t bear to see the numbers going up again on my weight record sheet, and went back to eating the takeaways and fast food that had made me gain weight in the first place. “Just before Heidi was born, though, I started to think that having a baby now wouldn’t be so bad. After all, we had jobs and a roof over our heads. And you so often hear about people who wait until their “ideal” time to have a baby, only to discover it’s not possible. I stopped punishing myself with food, returned to group when Heidi was three
weeks old, and by the time of my 21st birthday seven months later, I was just a few pounds away from my target of 10st 10lbs. I can’t imagine life without Heidi now – I adore being a mum – and because I’m still young and am fitter again, I can run around after her as much as she likes. “When I returned to group, everyone I know was really encouraging, except for one person who thought I was wasting my time. “You won’t lose weight now you’re a mum,” she predicted. “You’ll be too tired to care.” Well, I’ve definitely proved her wrong! The target members at group are such an inspiration. And my Consultant, is wonderful – if I have a bad week, she sweeps me back up onto my feet and reminds me of how far I’ve already come. “My mum’s joined Slimming World, too - she’s my partner in crime! I motivate her and she definitely motivates me. She looks fabulous 4 stones lighter. Family and friends can’t believe the difference in me and the first thing they ask is... ‘How have you done that?’, and of course I owe my glamorous new look to Slimming World. “I used to play netball but had to stop because of my weight. Now I’m back playing competitively for two different teams. I really love it! I’m so much fitter and I’ve also started running and playing badminton with my mum. “My ambition now is to stay healthy and to be the best parent I can to Heidi. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a mum, a gran or even a great-gran – you can celebrate your dream weight loss at any age and stage of life.” Sinead Twells,Slimming World Consultant in the local SionMills group, says, ‘Doesn’t Charlotte look great! Losing weight with Slimming World meant she was able to wear her dream dress on her wedding day and most importantly be able to run around after little Heidi without any difficulty. She has done really well and has really inspired lots

Healthy tr-EATING this Halloween! Local weight-loss experts from Slimming World says eating healthily needn’t be scary, and that spooky treats aren’t off the menu for our slimmers. Sinead,Kellie, Sharron and Louise, who run our local Slimming World groups in Strabane,SionMills and Artigarvan says anyone watching their weight can have a guilt-free Halloween by trying out our tasty Halloween recipes, and that slimmers wanting to steer clear of Halloween ‘tricks’ can still enjoy their favourite ‘treats’ and lose weight. “If local families want to whip up something warm and comforting this Halloween, they won’t feel deprived with our tasty pumpkin recipes. If they fancy trying something a little sweeter, our toffee apple ice cream recipe is so simple to make, and will go down a treat with the kids! “Lots of people hollow out their pumpkins to make lanterns and chuck the flesh in the bin – but they’re throwing away a delicious, nutritious and filling superfood. Whatever your cooking ability, anyone who has pumpkin flesh going spare can whip up a quick and spook-ily filling pumpkin, bacon and sage tagliatelle dish, or try the hearty pumpkin soup – a meal that is just perfect on a chilly day. The toffee apple ice cream is a favourite with our kids; it tastes so good you’d never know it was a light dessert. All three Halloween-inspired recipes are surprisingly delicious, super satisfying, and great for boosting weight loss if you’re trying to slim.” The recipes included in the Halloween menu are based on Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising eating plan which allows slimmers to satisfy their appetite on filling, lower calorie foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, poultry and fish. At Slimming World these foods are called Free Foods because members can enjoy them freely to satisfy their appetite without weighing, counting and measuring.
Traditional Halloween goodies can be enjoyed by Slimming World members too. “So often we think that losing weight means going hungry and giving up all of our favourite foods – after all, that’s what so many diets tell us to do!” they say. “But it is possible to enjoy treats like a toffee apple or Halloween tipple without guilt, and enjoy the holiday without missing out. Members who join Slimming World to lose weight discover that we’re not about dieting and deprivation. What we help each other to do is make healthy changes to the way we shop, cook and eat and learn to make healthy choices. “To find out more about how to lose weight without hunger or calorie counting simply come along to your nearest Slimming World group. We’re not frightening at all -- we have lots of fun and a great laugh and loads of people make great friends for life. Everyone’s welcome. Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats EEvery month, the Herald speaks to a local son or daughter, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond where they grew up we wonder how they are finding life away from their hometown, what memories and hopes they have for home and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, it’s the turn of Joe McShane. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I left Strabane in February 2011. I landed in Melbourne and spent my first four months living on the great Ocean Road.
and when the final whistle blew my father and I walked down the town to see the celebrations. I’d never seen the town like that before.
What’s it like for a Strabane man/woman where you are now? Obviously it was a big change but it’s a very easy place to get used to, but here in Sydney I’ve made some fantastic friends and still have groups of mates from home, so I’ve really got the best of both worlds.
Sydney is a great city, but I do miss the fact that you can walk anywhere in the town and just stop and have a chat. It’s all go here and makes life a little impersonal....oh and I really miss taco sauce!
Where in Strabane did you grow up? I grew up in Ballycolman just across from Davy’s shop. A great memory of Strabane Probably when Ireland beat Italy in the World Cup. I was pretty young
Something you miss about Strabane?
What important factors do you think anyone thinking of moving abroad should consider. First of all you should really consider if moving is for you! It’s a lot of money to come all this way and realise that it’s not what you expected. Secondly don’t expect the streets to be paved with gold, get your head down and work hard!
Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? I can’t say that I want to, to be honest. I’ve got a life and career here that I couldn’t have in Ireland, but the option is always there and home is always going to be home. Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future. Obviously I’d love to see the town recover from this slump that it’s in, with more jobs for the people and an all round better standard of living. One of the best things about Strabane I’d have to say that the music seen in strabane is second to none. It’s not a large town and it’s overflowing with talent, from rap to electro and good old rock n’ roll..... and I love Wednesday nights with the Guvnors in Diceys!
Strabane man Joe McShane who now lives in Sydney Australia.
Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane? Great people, great music and great times.

And Finally... The third and final season of HBO’s ‘The Newsroom’ returns to Sky Atlantic in November. For those not yet tuned into Aaron Sorkin’s (‘The West Wing’ ‘A Few Good Men’, ‘The Social Network’) most recent creation, ‘The Newsroom’ is set behind the scenes at the fictional Atlantis Cable News (ACN) and centres around anchor Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), newsroom staff Jim Harper (John Gallagher, Jr.), Maggie Jordan (Alison Pill), Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn), Neal Sampat (Dev Patel), Don Keefer (Thomas Sadoski) and the head of Atlantis Cable News (ACN), Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston). Throughout the first series, each episode was built around a major news event from the recent past, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill or the killing of Osama Bin Laden. These events featured as a background for the interpersonal drama, as well as providing a sense of familiarity, as the audience is likely to know the context and so not require too much explanation of events. The second series featured a story arc in which the News Night team reported, and were forced to retract, a false news story about the United States Marine Corps using sarin gas during the war in Afghanistan in 2009. This final series will focus on

Shame v Guilt So often we use the words guilt and shame interchangeably however they are very different and can affect us in ways that may be news to many. This article by Counsellor Glenda Bekar (www. glendabekar.com) gives an excellent account of some of the differences and may help you to differentiate between the two. It can be easy to confuse a feeling of shame with guilt and vice versa because they both make us feel bad. However, where one makes us feel bad about our behavior (i.e. guilt), the other one makes us feel bad about ourselves (i.e. shame). Both shame and guilt have adaptive qualities, but like any unpleasant emotion, shame and guilt can cause tremendous internal suffering if they dominate our inner experience.
Sense of worth Shame is a feeling that is connected to our sense of worth where guilt is connected to our values
and behavior. When we feel shame, we want to hide. Our attention is focused internally, our thoughts are self-critical and self-blaming, we feel attacked and/or vulnerable, and we feel propelled to defend ourselves. As a result, shame has a direct negative impact on our self-esteem and selfworth. It also interferes with our sense of connection with others. When we feel guilt, on the other hand, we are motivated to make amends or apologize. We feel bad about what we did (or did not do), but we do not feel bad about who we are as a person. Guilt shifts our focus externally (i.e. toward the person or persons we have hurt), motivates us to acknowledge the harm we have caused and to repair this harm. Guilt is connected to our values and morals, and holds us account-
able to these values and morals. We feel relief from guilt when amends has been made. Another way of viewing the experience of shame versus guilt is that shame is about self-critical blaming (which is destructive) and guilt is about taking responsibility. It is a fine distinction between shame and guilt, and it is easy to see why shame and guilt can be experienced simultane-
ously, which can also make it difficult for us to know what we are feeling. This is especially so if we experience excessive shame because excessive shame can make us prone to experience excessive guilt.
tinction, understand the reason or reasons why one is feeling shame and/ or guilt, and begin the process of using these emotions to clarify one’s boundaries, values and beliefs. Becoming aware of our feelings of shame and/or guilt, and working with these feelings instead of trying to avoid them can keep them from becoming destructive.
The action tendency of shame and guilt are different, and when experienced simultaneously can become confusing. However, it is possible to Until the next time become aware of the dis- Tom Herron

Historical Railway Exhibition Unveiled in Strabane
Pictured at the launch of the ‘A Train Through Time’ exhibition at Strabane Library, two local footballing legends, Aidan ‘Cookie’ Dunne and Jim ‘Jimbo’ Crossan catch up.
Strabane District Caring Services unveiled their ‘A Train Through Time’ model and exhibition in Strabane Library on Thursday at the beginning of this month. A large crowd was in attendance to marvel at the impressively meticulous and detailed exhibition, which is currently on display in the library foyer.
Pictured at the launch of the ‘A Train Through Time’ exhibition at Strabane Library are: Dan Kelly, Chairman of Strabane District Council, Jim ‘Jimbo’ Crossan, Robert Coyle, Dickie McGinley, Grainne Begley and Brendan Dunn.
Train enthusiasts from the local Model Railway Club, in conjunction with Strabane District Caring Services, spent months recreating the old Strabane/Donegal Railway Junction. Their work took in every historical detail, right down to the very vehicles that would have come through the local lines over five decades ago.

The Songs Of Leonard Cohen Keith James interprets the Leonard Cohen songbook. Leonard Cohen is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic singer/songwriters to emerge from the ‘60’s and has retained and grown his audience across five decades of music making. Arguably second only to Bob Dylan in terms of influence he commands the attention of musicians and critics alike more firmly than any other musical figure still working from that era. In this special evening Keith James, a deft interpreter of the Cohen song-book, strips the songs back to their most basic elements, revealing the humour, frailty and sensuality that lies beneath. Hear classics like Chelsea Hotel, Famous Blue Raincoat, Hallelujah and many more in this special intimate evening tailored especially for Cohen fans.

The Logues Castlederg folk rock band The Logues come to the The Balor promising their own brand of whiskey soaked folk. Formed in 2006 from the embers of a drunken St. Patrick’s Day jam session, The Logues are purveyors of ‘psycho ceilidh’, a rock-based Irish/Americana folk sound - “the most progressive folk band in Ireland,” according to Ireland’s biggest booking agency AMA. The Tyrone five-piece hit The Balor as part of an Irish theatre tour in late 2014 - a year that will have seen them perform to 5,000 people in Dubai on St. Patrick’s Day and thousands more in Holland in late October. Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty has said that the Priority 6 Budget of almost £70million announced by Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill will go towards tackling rural inequalities and is to be welcomed. Mr Doherty said “This money delivered as part of the Rural Development Programme will help tackle some of the rural inequalities like poverty, improving rural infrastructure, supporting business development, basic services, the renewal of villages and activities aimed at the restoration and upgrading of the cultural and natural heritage of rural areas. “The money divided across ten areas managed by the newly formed Local Action Groups has been allocated on the basis of rural population levels, poverty and deprivation while a minimum level of funding has been set to ensure the effectiveness of the new

Pat Prepares For 35th Dublin Marathon, Aged 77 Castlederg ‘Marathon Man’ Pat O’Loughlin is about to embark on his 35th Dublin City Marathon at the age of 77. The veteran sportsman will be running once again to raise funds for MS research and is the only runner from Northern Ireland, and one of 26 runners world-wide, to have completed all 34 Dublin marathons. The ‘Herald’ caught up once again with the retired Jeweller last week to discuss his forthcoming 26.2 mile epic run, which will take place on October 27. A recent bout of sickness has not deterred Pat from his aim to make it 35 marathons in a row. “I’m not just one100 percent at the moment. I picked up a bug of some kind and spent some time in hospital in Enniskillen. I was well looked after there and they checked me out and everything is OK. It’s not flu and I’m not coughing or sneezing and my joints are grand. Either way, all going well I’ll be fine for October 27. Maybe it was something I ate,” he laughed. Pat will once again be joined by his long-term running partner, Jenny Mc Menamin, who, as Pat explained, has always been a great support in training and in taking on the marathon itself. Completing the team effort, and joining his dad on the Dublin Marathon for the second time, will be Pat’s son, Ciaran. “Jenny has always been a great support in getting me ready for the marathons. Ciaran joined us for the first time last year and he really enjoyed it. He’s actually hoping to
speed things up a bit this year. Obviously he’s a lot fitter than myself and plays football regularly for the local St Pat’s team.,” Pat told us.
Charity Work While Pat has been running the Dublin marathon for various charities since it began back in the late 70s, he has been running to raise funds for MS research since 2000. His friend, John Doherty, has a son with MS. Back in 2000 John was running a dance to raise some funds for research. When Pat realised that the date of the dance clashed with his annual Dublin Marathon run he decided to get a sponsor sheet and add to the funds raised at the dance. “The public response was amazing both locally and further afield in places like Belfast. And this year, as always, the people around Castlederg have been more than generous. It’s quite overwhelming. There’s a lot of good people here across the community and MS is an issue close to many a heart as there are about 30 people around this area affected with it. Even the Fermanagh branch of the MS Society have been in contact to offer their thanks for the work we’ve done,” Pat revealed. Since he started running the marathon in aid of MS research 14 years ago Pat has raised over £50,000. He’s now hoping to shake off his current bug and get ready to add to

that tally. “You couldn’t believe how good people are. It’s not me who raises the money, it’s the people who come to me and offer donations. You couldn’t beat the local people here in Castlederg for charity. I just hope to be fit and ready for
it. You need everything going right for you to be ready for a marathon. The check-ups have been all clear so hopefully I’ll be rid of this bug in time. It’s always a great day in Dublin, supported by thousands of people. We tend to be very lucky

Following the USA’s exploits in Brazil this summer at the World Cup and given the gradual rise of their MLS league, the ‘Herald’ asked Strabane man, Paul Gallagher, currently living and coaching soccer in North Carolina, how a nation famously indifferent to ‘the beautiful game’ has now seemingly embraced it.
Youth Soccer in the USA
66% of people are overweight, the average person drinks 600 sodas a year and three towns have Santa Claus in their name. Yes I am talking about the self-proclaimed ‘Greatest Country in the world’, the United States of America. Saying things are a little different here is a bit of an understatement. For those of you who have been able to visit the US, I am sure you have seen the oversized drinks, the giant cheese filled burgers and the overwhelming amount of terrible adverts on TV! But for all the flaws, America really is a great country. Opportunities are abundant here and people are more than willing to help you with just about anything. Case in point. After graduating this past May, I got married in June, and moved in with my beautiful new wife, here in South Carolina. After a few weeks of celebrating and taking trips to the beach, I began the dreaded job search. Like anywhere in the world right now, it takes a little time to find a job and I was holding out for the right one. With that being said, I knew I had to get a job sooner rather than later because the bills don’t pay themselves and I found myself filling out job applications day after day to no avail. Sitting here today I am pleased to say that it paid off and I have found a career that’s a great fit for me, but to be honest, for a few months there I was nervous about what the future held. I say all of this because during that time I experienced the true meaning of ‘Southern hospitality’. Here in the South of the US, people are a little nicer, a little rounder and tend to carry guns. An article found that this area has the most states that would be wiped out by a zombie apocalypse, but still the people here are great! No more so than a friend of my wife’s who will
go unnamed for confidentiality reasons. He knew I was still looking for work at the time and knew I had a soccer background, so he asked if Ashton and I would be interesting in coaching a youth soccer team during the Fall (Autumn in the States) season. We knew the extra cash would help out a lot and figured it would be fun. Three months in it has been that and a lot more. Youth soccer here like everything else is just different than it is in Ireland. Kids at our club pay on average 300400 pounds a season! The money goes to coaching fees, facilities, equipment, kits, referees, etc. etc. A whole lot different from paying a couple of pound to play every Saturday back home. But with that comes a whole different set-up and mentality.
3 Games in a weekend! Youth teams here will have two-three training sessions a week and Saturday or Sunday could consist of a double-header (two games in one day!) On top of that teams will participate in two-three tournaments a season which involves traveling to one of the bigger cities in the area on a Friday, playing two games on a Saturday, and then getting up early on a Sunday to play in the third game of the weekend. At least when I was growing up, youth soccer was not that intense. Kids here still have school, they still play numerous sports, and I’m sure they still have social lives. Playing youth soccer here takes up a lot of time and

for the parents it takes up a lot of money! Kids have to be dedicated, have to recover quickly and have to be ready for nearly 300 minutes of soccer in one weekend. That is a lot for even the greatest of athletes never mind a 12 year old kid. With all that being said I think it is at least part of what has led to the increased success and popularity of
soccer here and it will only continue to lead to future success. Like I mentioned earlier in this article, America has a lot of flaws that are clearly evident, but I think their continued growth of grass roots soccer is something that they are getting right. A World Cup in 20 or 30 years might even prove that!

Macmillan Cup 2014 Surpasses £2000 Target! A hugely successful Macmillan Cup seven-a-side football tournament took place at Melvin at the end of last month. The organisers were hoping to improve upon the impressive £1700 that was raised at the inaugural Macmillan Cup tournament last year and they did just that, raising over £2000 for Strabane’s Macmillan Nurses. Beautiful weather and a large attendance added to the fun and good spirited atmosphere of the day as 16 teams battled it out, with last year’s winners, Charlie’s Bar, hoping to retain the trophy. However, it wasn’t to be for ‘Slippy’ and the lads this year as they bowed out in the quarter finals. The finalists this year were Mopack and the Pool Bar and nothing could separate the two teams during normal time. The winners were to be decided via a penalty shoot-out. It was a nail-biting finale with the shoot-out going to sudden death. In the end, it was heartbreak for the Pool Bar as Skipper ‘Gigs’ Connolly’s spot-kick, like Lionel Messi’s that very same weekend, sailed over the crossbar ensuring that the Macmillan Cup will be residing in the Ballycolman Industrial Estate this year at the home of Mopack. Players and those in attendance gathered in Dicey Riley’s afterwards for refreshments and the fundraising continued that night with an Eighties Disco in the upstairs bar, concluding a very memorable day for all involved. Speaking to ‘Chronicle’, Darren Wallace wanted to thank everyone who helped in the running of the day.
“There are a lot of people to thank starting with Christopher Hendry, who has been invaluable in the running of the cup over the last two years. I want to thank Paul ‘Gags’ Gallagher and Springhill Park Community Development Association for sponsoring the pitches on the day. I would also like to thank Ivan Barr and Strabane Community Rescue Service and St John’s Ambulance for their attendance on the day, Mickey Ferry for taking photos and running the best disco the town has ever seen that night, KP Doherty and ‘Turkey’ McFeeters for help on the day and Josephine McGinn and Lisa Mc Gavigan for selling tickets. Thanks also to Tommy Forbes from Strabane Radio, Active Packaging, Raymond McGoldrick, Toots Takes All and Dicey Riley’s for sponsoring the prizes. A big ‘thank you’ also goes to Sharon Hegarty for feeding the mob in Dicey’s. I want to thank every team sponsor - your teams did you proud and finally to every player that took part on the day. Without you there would be no tournament and I’m so grateful to each and every one of you. We have raised over £2000 for Macmillan, which is an excellent result for a fantastic cause. Once again thank you all for your support,” Macmillan Cup 2014 Winners - Mopack concluded Darren.

Polish Anglers N.I. enjoying the competition day at Lower Lough Erne at the beginning of the month.
Mammoth Pike
Polish Anglers N.I had a fantastic and highly rewarding competition day out on Lower Lough Erne on 05/10/14. The event was organised in collaboration with The Bridge Guns & Tackle, Strabane/Lifford Anglers and co-funded by Strabane District Council (Good Relations Grant). The competition itself featured 12 anglers and some magnificent fish were landed and returned. Some leviathans of the deep were hooked however they managed to avoid the net and slide back into the inky depths of the lough where they remain as anglers memories. A magnificent total of 38 Pike were landed for what proved to be both a memorable and astounding days angling. Paul Forbes skippered his boat to a grand total of 27 Pike for the day. The fishing was frantic and the angry pike just kept on biting. The majority of the fish fell to ‘sliders’ fished high in the water with the occasional pike coming to the edge of the boat before deciding to launch aggressively at the lures. A great day was complemented by the presence of a pair of Golden Eagles who put on a mesmerising display in the afternoon and early evening light. Once again Mr Harry Whoriskey confirmed his standing among the angling elite by boating the biggest and strongest specimen on the boat, claiming third place in the competition overall. Though it was Andrew Loop who claimed first place with 506.5 Points in total. Well done Andrew! Thats some going! A wonderful day was had by all those who took part. What a day!! The Bridge Guns and tackle has everything to complement the perfect day fishing and has a huge selection of pike gear to help you land the toothy critter of your dreams..... Final standings: 1 ) Andrew Loop - 506.5 pts 2 ) Julian Dabioch - 406 points 3 ) Harry Whorriskey - 297 points 4 ) Declan McGillan - 274 points 5 ) Paul Forbes - 253 points 6 ) Piotr Wojciechowski - 238 points 7 ) Arthur Dudek - 236.5 pts 8) Slawek Hare - 193.5 pts 9) Jarek Rojkowicz - 113 points 10 ) Stephen Noble - 89 points 11) Sean Harte - 65 12 ) Arthur Hornet - 54.5
