Challenge Your Brain For Children In Need
DOCK STREET FUEL CENTRE 39 Dock Street, Strabane (Beside Mahon Hire)
TEL: 07715 477491
The popular online quiz ‘The Brain Box Challenge’ will be going live on Friday, November 13 in Dicey Rileys, Strabane, and all in aid of Children In Need. The man with the questions will be, as it is online, DJ Paddy McGhee. The last live ‘Brain Box Challenge’ was a huge success and Paddy is hoping to build on that at this forthcoming event, and all for a good cause. “There will be four challengers to a team, and it’s five pound per challenger,” he told us. “If you wish, you can play on your own as well. Once again, Diceys has kindly agreed to host the event and the craic will start at 9pm with a DJ set. In fact, I’ll be playing a few classic hits both before and after the quiz. It’s all in aid of Children In Need, which will be taking place that evening, so we’re hoping to raise a good amount. “So if you’re in Strabane or anywhere near it and
looking for somewhere to go on Friday, November 13, feel free to join us for a good night’s craic, where you can test your brain and have fun with all the classic hits and all the music you love and want hear. It’s going to be fantastic night’s entertainment, so get your teams together folks and I look forward to seeing you there,” Paddy added.

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. TTaking the interviewee chair this month is 22 year old Wendy Curran Houston. Where in Strabane did you grow up?
Favourite kind of music?
Something you love about Strabane?
I grew up in Sigerson Place, the same street I’ve lived in for 22 years.
I’m into a lot of different types of music such as Haim, System Of A Down, Jamie T, Kings of Leon, Chase And Status, Queen, Biggie, ELO and Take That.
I love the people in it! The humour in this town is just so different than anywhere I’ve ever been.
A fond childhood memory? When Oakland Park got rebuilt and it was always packed with children from everywhere around the town.
A Favourite holiday destination? I love getting away foreign but Bundoran will always be my favourite place to go for a few nights away.
A favourite film and why?
Favourite food? Everyone who knows me knows I love a good chippy. My favourite food without a doubt would have to be makhani chicken from Masala; I’ve yet to get sick of it.
Who or what makes you laugh?
My granny Curran! She is the most sarcastic I have so many favourite films but I think the person I’ve ever met, she always has someone that beats them all is Stand By Me. thing to say. It reminds me of when my cousins stayed over when I was younger, because that’s all we watched.
An ideal night in? I love laying in with a few beers and loads of food, while catching up of TV shows.
An ideal night out?
I love going down to Diceys for a “few drinks” on a Saturday. Always have the best craic and good tunes.
Something about Strabane that you miss? I miss the Rainbow Cafe! They had the nicest cheese burgers I’ve ever tasted!
Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future? I’d love to see anything that would give a boost of jobs in the town. We are in need of more clothes shops, especially for men.
Would you like your son, daughter or friend to feature in ‘Closer to home?’ If so, email us at: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk
Someone who makes you proud to be from Strabane and why? The local bands and singers make me proud to be from Strabane; there is some great talent in our town.

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

The growing success of Strabane beauty salon Aura Beauty and Wellbeing has been recognised at the prestigious Northern Ireland Hair and Beauty Awards. The gala event at Belfast’s Europa Hotel brought along the elite from the hair and beauty fraternity, and against other strong nominees Aura Beauty and Wellbeing claimed Beauty Salon of the Year in the Western section.

To say that winning the award was a shock for Aura Proprietor, Anita McGowan, and her staff is an understatement; up until two weeks before the event they didn’t even know that they were nominated! “Unbeknown to us we were nominated by our customers,” explained Anita, speaking to the ‘Herald’ at the Aura Beauty and Wellbeing salon. “A number of secret shoppers then visited the premises and were very impressed with the service and how they were treated. When we heard about the nomination our immediate reaction was not to go because we had no chance of winning. Then we decided that it was such an honour to be nominated that we should get dressed up, treat ourselves, book into a hotel and make a night of it.” Attending the awards ceremony was initially daunting for Anita. “I thought, ‘what are we doing here?’ The hair and beauty elite were in attendance, so it was a bit mind blowing. When it came to the nomination for North West Beauty Salon, just seeing our name up on the screen was enough for us, but when they announced that we were the winners I was literally speechless,” laughs Anita.
Success Aura Beauty and Wellbeing’s success has been achieved through small beginnings that have been built on gradually. Upon completing her qualifications Anita set up a room at home for £500, with her father building the nail bar for her.
Proprietor of Aura Beauty and Wellbeing, Anita McGowan with staff Julie Hepworth, Paula Doherty, Jennifer McCrory, Dara McNamee and Roisin McCann at the awards ceremony at the Europa Hotel, Belfast.
Two years later she moved to new premises at the cottages beside the Fir Trees Hotel with friend Julie Hepworth now on board. “We got so busy when we moved there that eventually we moved to where we are now in Belvue House on Park road and we’ve been here for seven years,” smiled Anita.
Expansion There is now a staff of six working for Aura Beauty and Wellbeing, and plans are now afoot to extend and turn the upstairs space into a skin clinic. “My ethos is that every year I take on some-
thing big and new, so I’m always putting the money back into the business. We also pride ourselves in respecting other businesses and respecting our customers and their right to confidentiality: these are very important factors in this business. I’d encourage anyone with an idea for a business to explore it and follow it. We’ve had a fantastic nine years with a great staff of girls, who genuinely love working here, and great customers, who saw fit to nominate us for Beauty Salon of the Year. We couldn’t be happier with the way things have worked out,” concluded Anita.

When - Tuesday 13th October at 10.30am | Adm: £4
C21 are delighted to announce this production of one of Shakespeare’s classic plays, ‘The Merchant of Venice’, in which good triumphs over evil. Using their winning edited and fast-moving style, this strong company of six actors, directed by Art Webb, have transposed the setting to 1920’s America, bringing more theatrical appeal and interest to this sophisticated narrative.

After the success of the summers smash hit musical ‘Gutz’ by composer David Oliver, the Alley Theatre is delighted to be welcoming back this must see musical featuring a star studded cast, phenomenal 10 piece live band and an extensive chorus. Casey (Kit) Carson is a strong, fiercely independent, highly intelligent and very attractive 23-yearold from Boise, Idaho. As she works within the ranks of Davis Power Inc, she ambitiously envisages an eventual position within New York City’s business elite. In the cosmopolitan hotbed of a 21st century city, where success sees no colour or gender, Casey has left her quaint hometown at just the right time - or has she? ‘Gutz’ is an explosive, highly charged musical exploration of the seductive, hedonistic and deceptive nature of life in a metropolis. This promises to be an explosion of creative dance, drama & music. Book early to avoid disappointment If this is not enough for you, don’t worry, as our packed programme continues with exciting and popular events on the lead up to Christmas with excitement for all the family! Netflix goes to war On demand streaming site Netflix continues to thrive and lead the way in the new age of television viewing. With exclusive and successful serials like ‘House Of Cards’ and, most recently, ‘Narcos’ in their growing canon of productions, they are now extending into the film genre. ‘Beasts of No Nation’ is a new West African war drama film directed, written and filmed by Cary Fukunaga, based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala. The film stars Idris Elba (‘The Wire’), Ama K. International Film Festival. As of October 16, it has been available to view on Netflix. ‘Beasts of No Nation’ is based in an unnamed West African country. When civil war tears his family apart and militants kill his father, a young boy named Agu is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters led by the ferocious Commandant (Elba), who takes him in as a child soldier.
Abraham Attah’s performance has garnered wide acclaim as one of the best screen debuts in recent times. With Cary Fukunaga, whose credits include directing and producing series one of ‘True Detective’ (the good one!), writing and directing the 2009 film ‘Sin Nombre’ and the 2011 film ‘Jane Eyre’, all signs point to one dramatic, intense piece of work. ‘Beasts of No Nation’ Reviews have been very sounds like a must see for the autumn positive, and teenager season.

The six-part series opens with a daring diamond heist before quickly delving into the dark heart of Europe, where a shadowy alliance of gangsters and ‘banksters’ now rules. The series is based on the true story of the Pink Panthers - a notorious group of Balkan jewel thieves - known for pulling off a number of high-profile heists.
Academy Award Nominee and BAFTA winner, Morton is ‘Naomi’, a British loss adjustor charged with recovering the stolen diamonds whatever the cost. Two-time Academy Award Nominee, three-time BAFTA Award winner, and Golden Globe winner Hurt portrays ‘Tom’, her notorious boss. Also in pursuit is a French-Algerian policeman ‘Khalil’, played by double Cesar award winner Tahar Rahim, one of France’s most talented and versatile actors. The origins of the series go back to an
idea from celebrated French journalist Jerome Pierrat and the screenplay is from award winning writer and co-creator Jack Thorne (‘This Is England’). Directed by Johan Renck ‘(Bloodline’, Breaking Bad’, ‘The Walking Dead’), it also features a title track written and performed by David Bowie, his first original contribution to a TV show since recording the theme to ‘The Buddha of Suburbia’ in 1993. The Last Panthers will air on Sky Atlantic in November; expect top drawer performances and a killer soundtrack.

We’re dreaming of a light Christmas, say slimmers offers on to save money when joining or returning to S.W. If you pick up this weeks Reveal magazine or next weeks Bella magazine, on sale Tuesday 20th October, you can pick up a free membership voucher and any new members buying a special Christmas Countdown before Saturday 31st October will also get 12 weeks for the price of 10 PLUS a copy of our gorgeous A Slimming World Christmas recipe book. To find out more about Slimming World and discover details of all of your local friendly groups visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk A warm welcome is waiting for you.
Christmas is arriving early for local slimmers as they embark on a festive weight-loss challenge. Members of the Slimming World groups in Strabane, Artigarvan, Sion Mills and Castlederg are setting out on a mission to slim down for Christmas and the New Year. Their seasonal slim is part of a campaign running across all 13,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland called Love…a Slimming World Christmas, which aims to help the club’s 800,000 members all enjoy their healthiest Christmas ever. Sinead Twells, who runs the Sion Mills Slimming World group, says: “Christmas is a wonderful time of year with so much to celebrate, but if you’re feeling unhappy with your weight it can also be a very difficult time – there’s the fear of feeling uncomfortable in every party outfit and the worry that you might go off track completely and end up reaching January heavier than you were before.” “The run-up to Christmas is extremely busy for most of us, it can play havoc with our regular routines and there are lots of extra occasions like Halloween and Christmas dos that can make it harder than usual to stick with making healthy choices to manage our weight. Keeping active when the dark, cold nights close in can be a challenge too, but by sharing ideas and keeping each other motivated members stay on track to reach their goals.” “So the aim of Love…a Slimming World Christmas is to show everyone that it’s possible to stay focused and slim down with Slimming World whatever the time of year. And, without giving up everything you love and making great choices, you could easily be a stone – or even two – lighter by January 2016. Each week in our group we’ll share recipes, advice and ideas for coping with potential challenges, from Christmas parties to shopping trips, and help one another to rediscover the magic of Christmas while still achieving our dreams – after all, achieving your own personal weight-loss target could be the best present you give yourself this Christmas!” The groups launch their Love…a Slimming World Christmas campaigns this week. It’s simply about making small, easy changes to the way you plan, cook and eat, and choosing the healthiest options when you’re not the one preparing the food and drink.” If you’d like to join the S.W groups on their seasonal slim down you still can. And, as an extraearly Christmas gift, anyone who signs up to a 12 week Countdown of Slimming World support
between Monday 12th and Saturday 31st October will not only pay for 10 weeks and get 2 weeks free but will also get a free copy of Slimming World’s brand new A Slimming World Christmas recipe book, which is packed full of delicious festive dishes and worth £4.95. Quick and healthy meals made easy thanks to Slimming World and Iceland Local slimmers are clearing space in their freezers and heading to their local Iceland store to stock up on a brandnew selection of healthy frozen foods from Slimming World. The UK’s favourite weight loss organisation has worked with the leading frozen food retailer to strengthen its record-breaking food range and added seven new ready meals, four soups and two cooking sauces to its offering. Slimming World Consultants Helen, Patricia, Sharron and Sinead, who run the local Slimming World groups, say their members have all been looking forward to trying the new dishes. They believe the new products, which are available exclusively in Iceland stores from last week will help their members to stay on track with their weight loss campaign in the run up to Christmas. They say: “Once we get into autumn the year seems to speed up with winter and, dare I say it, Christmas coming before we know it. It’s such a busy time and losing weight can easily fall to the bottom of our priorities. However, this range means it’s possible for people to enjoy a healthy, satisfying meal even when they’re short on time, so they can – with the help of their Slimming World group – achieve their weight loss dreams, as well as juggling everything else going on in their lives.”
ready meals including Cottage pie, Chicken saag and Three-bean and roasted vegetable chilli. Plus soups such as Spicy lentil and Tomato and basil as well as tasty cooking sauces – Chunky tomato and Spicy chicken tikka masala – join the range.
Based on Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising* eating plan, the collection has been developed in response to demand from the club’s 13 Products 800,000 members. The launch of the Slimming The 13 new frozen food range products are packed World food range was Iceland’s most successful with delicious, comforting ingredients that are ever when it hit stores in February, and the new perfect for this time of year with the seven new additions will give slimmers even more choice
including – for the first time – soups and sauces. Each one is generously portioned (up to 550g) and the meals all feature the recipe on the packaging so slimmers can recreate the dishes at home when they have more time. The girls agree “Cooking from scratch at home with healthy ingredients will always remain at the heart of Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. However, we do understand that sometimes in the real world there are times when you are just too busy and it’s not always possible to create healthy, filling meals from scratch. These products are a back-up plan for exactly those times. I’ll certainly be filling up our freezers in the run up to Christmas when we are really busy and can often feel tempted by takeaways or unhealthy convenience foods. “Now slimmers can enjoy a nutritious, balanced meal ready to cook straight from the freezer in minutes, instead of opting for something that doesn’t fill them up or give them the best weight loss results. My members tell us that these meals are ‘lifesavers’ and help them to stay on track when they might have struggled before, plus because they’re tasty and generous as well as healthy they’re popular with the whole family. The soups will be perfect for lunchtimes, too.”

The new products are: Beef & Three-Bean Chilli Con Carne 500g Beef Chana Saag 500g Bolognese Ragu 450g Chicken Saag 500g Chicken & Mediterranean Vegetable Pasta 550g Cottage Pie 500g Three-Bean & Roasted Veg Chilli 550g Pea & Mint Soup 500g Carrot & Coriander Soup 500g Tomato & Basil Soup 500g Spicy Lentil Soup 500g Spicy Tikka Masala Sauce 350g Chunky Tomato Sauce 350g The full Slimming World range is available exclusively in Iceland’s 860 stores including your local Strabane store. The meals and meat products are all priced at £3 each, while the soups and sauces are £1.50. More products are in development and will be in stores next year. Anyone interested in finding out more about losing weight through healthy eating or joining the local Slimming World groups in Artigarvan, Castlederg, Slimming World members follow the club’s Food Sion Mills and Strabane are welcome to pop along Optimising healthy eating plan and learn to satisfy where a warm welcome will be waiting and the their appetite on those foods that are the lowest kettle will be on.

Notice what you are doing right now. Where is your attention now? Are you thinking about something that has already happened or worrying about something that is going to happen?
Time to focus on the ‘here and now’
Mindfulness is about paying attention to what is going on now, non-judgementally, with purpose, in the present moment. It is about living in the NOW. Remember everything happens in the present. It is a gift that’s why we call it the present. Give yourself a present of the present and choose to feel good NOW. I remember travelling along in the car with my 6 year old daughter and lots of everyday things running through my mind. I was wondering, for example, if I had locked the back door. I then worried about why I didn’t leave 10 minutes earlier as the road I was about to take was probably going to be really busy with traffic. then I am more mindful of everything I do and My daughter then said to me, really feel the benefit. I now take time to ‘smell the roses’ as it were. Just this morning it was Mindfull raining however I noticed the beautiful autum“Daddy does your seat feel really cosy? nal colours in the garden in spite of the rain. I Mine does”. I was immediately brought marvelled at how raindrops seem to magically away from thoughts of the past and the stick to cobwebs and how the flowers open up future to becoming aware of whether my to welcome the wetness. amaze me. Choose an activity to do mindfully today, for one, two or five minutes. For example: Drink and enjoy every sip of a cup of tea. Feel the cup at your lips and the hot tea just ‘hitting the spot’ as it were. Go for a walk and feel your body as you do so. Whatever you do today, be in that moment, right now. See, hear, smell, touch, feel, breathe and know that you are alive. If unwanted thoughts or sensations come into your mind, let them pass on through and focus on your breathing. Describe rather than judge whether it is good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant and be patient and compassionate with yourself. Whatever will be ….will be. It is as it is. Until the next time. Tom

The Empire Strikes Back To say that the record business is cruel is hardly an exclusive revelation. Many have tried, most have failed. A minority get their foot in the door and most are shown the way out again soon afterwards. For Tokyo Empire, the latter was all too familiar in the mid-2000s, as the record industry came knocking only to eventually tell them there was no room at the inn, as right across the board the record companies tightened the purse strings.
By Michael Ferry However, unlike the majority of acts who suffered a similar fate, Tokyo Empire are still going strong. Further knock backs were to come, but it seems the Strabane five-piece are increasingly impervious to whatever is thrown at them. 2015 finds them on the verge of completing their debut album, with a new single and video called ‘Echoes’ just released, and finally, after many years of temporary drummers, they finally appear to have a permanent fixture behind the kit. So what’s their secret? A genuine love for what they do superseding any career aspirations may possibly be the answer. “Very few people make a career out of music now, obviously it would be a bonus but we’ve always enjoyed writing and performing so we’ve never seen a reason to stop,” says bassist, Sean McDermott who, along with front man, Chris Sharkey, caught up the ‘Herald’ last week for a chat. “We’d always get a little bit of momentum going and then it would ground to a halt. It’s been pretty stop start for us but we knew we had enough good songs and we’re basically best friends and we see each other all the time so we may as well keep going. Personally my favourite thing would be the studio, whereas Chris prefers playing live,” explains Sean. “This album is a bit like ‘The Chinese
Democracy’: 12 years in the making,” jokes Chris. “I do like the studio but it can get a bit repetitive. However, when you hear the finished product it’s most definitely worth it. Working with Pete (Doherty, Neon Noise Studios) is brilliant. He’s completely honest and when he thinks a song is just ok he always tries to make it better by, say, suggesting a change in a chorus or something like that. Not many would do that; others may just record you and send you off knowing it maybe could’ve been better.” Along with recording in the studio, the band have also filmed a video for ‘Echoes’, and the response has been fantastic. For the video, the band collaborated with local photographer and filmmaker, Gav Kelly. “We knew Gav was capable of doing quality stuff but we didn’t know it was going to be that good,” Sean enthuses. “He did a bit of brainstorming with Chris about ideas for the video. They got Tori Loughrey Wray, who Gav has worked with before, to appear in it and it developed from there. The reaction has been great and the people of Strabane have really supported it by buying the track online or sharing it on social media.”
Radio Stations While the public response has been positive, radio stations are now picking up on the single as well. “It’s important to capitalise on the single now that it’s released. Radio support has been great locally on Radio Foyle, Highland Radio, Drive 105 and Strabane Radio. We’ve also been played on Across The Line on Radio Ulster and 98FM in Dublin. When

those guys are playing it, it’s important to push on,” stresses Sean. So does the band still have aspirations of commercial success? “When there’s a well polished video it makes it more complete, I think,” explains Chris. “We’ve never had a proper professionally made video before either. If nothing becomes of what we do, it’s not the end of the world; we’ll keep on doing what we do because we love it.” So, does the recording of the debut album feel like a fresh start? “It does feel like a fresh start but also, in a way, the first start,” says Sean. “We’ve been busy getting stuff together for the album. We didn’t want to
Boy Done Good! As Strabane’s Tokyo Empire keep us waiting a bit longer for their long awaited debut album, Derry’s Eoin O’Callaghan, recording under the moniker Best Boy Grip, has finally unleashed the beast. From when he first seduced our ears with beautifully melodic piano led ‘Barbara EP’ back in 2011, the prospect of a full long player from Best Boy Grip couldn’t come quick enough. However, forever the perfectionist, O’Callaghan took on writing, recording, performing and producing every song. If that was not enough, he also took on much of the promotion work, overseeing the development of the album artwork and videos. Having complete autonomy over his work probably prolonged the recording process, as he understandably pondered over every detail of his debut creation.
‘Best Boy Grip’ is a fantastic piece of work. O’Callaghan’s accomplished musicality confidently elevates every track to where it aspires to go. On ‘Cops’ he becomes a one-man Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, with a piano chomp that recalls their work with Madness. The melodic piano-led pop charm continues on tracks like ‘Barbara’, which successfully sits comfortably alongside the more aggressive guitar based tracks such as ‘Sharks’, where O’Callaghan’s love for the raw simplicity of classic Nirvana holds as much value to him as his clearly evident accomplished musical flair. On ‘Covert’ and ‘Can’t Buy Love, Son’ he reveals a genuine gift for poignant lyricism, which he spreads beautifully over these moving compositions. These are songs and words that touch, inspire and fully entertain. Gorgeous melodies, beautiful arrangements, powerful harmonies: ‘Best Boy Grip’ is the album we hoped it would be, and more.

rush it and put something s*** out. I’d say it’s about 75 percent finished. Some songs just need freshened up or remixed. It’s a matter of getting studio time with Pete because he’s pretty busy. We’d love to get it released by Christmas, but early in the new year is more than likely.”
Play ‘Live’ He continues, “Now that we’ve got a permanent drummer in, we want to play live as much as humanly possible. We had great guys like Gerry Strawbridge and Mark Donnelly filling in but they couldn’t commit to it fulltime. We’re in a better position now so we’re planning some November gigs in Belfast and Strabane.”
The band have been around long enough to know that what lies around the corner can never be predicted. They’re optimistic, excited but wisely cautious. “Most of the things that can happen to a band to halt the momentum have landed on our doorstep. At this point I don’t think anything could stop us from doing what we enjoy,” states Chris. As the interview concludes, Sean sums it up perfectly as he jokes, “it’s too late to give up now!” Tokyo Empire’s new single, ‘Echoes’, is currently available to download on iTunes and Amazon. It’s also available to stream on Spotify and the video can be viewed on YouTube.

Tories condemning thousands to a life of poverty and disadvantage - Doherty
Catterson
Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty who attended the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, has branded David Cameron’s conference speech vowing “an all-out assault on poverty” and his claim that the “national living wage” would mark a “giant leap forward” as “an insult to those that his government is condemning to a life of poverty and disadvantage”.
Mob: 07840 434323
Speaking after listening to the British PM’s claims, Pat Doherty said: “Reality for hundreds of thousands of families is much different than the Tory rhetoric. As think-tank ‘Resolution Foundation’, chaired by former Conservative minister David Willetts, pointed out, ‘poverty levels are on the rise and this rise is directly related to the policies being pursued by the Tory government’ – and that is the reality. “The Resolution Foundation findings show that an extra 200,000 children will become impoverished in 2016 as a result of the tax and benefit measures announced in the summer budget and that the number of all households in poverty – both in and out of work – will rise by 700,000 to nearly 4 million Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty. by the end of the Tory party’s term in office. - 60% of median income - and then linking the ‘national living wage’ to 60% of median Shameful deceit income it is clear that the heights to which “Furthermore, Tory suggestions that people they aspire are not a ‘national living wage’ but will be better off as a result of their proposed in fact a ‘national poverty wage’. ‘national living wage” are a shameful deceit. “Rather than being the ‘party of the fair “The Tory government intends removing its chance’ they are a party of chancers leading requirement to meet Child Poverty targets. an all-out assault on the poor instead of an By removing the current measure of poverty assault on poverty.”

The only Johnny Cash Tribute to be endorsed by the Cash family. This is the number one tribute to the great Johnny Cash featuring Clive John as the Man In Black. From his first hits in the 1950s right up to his last, the band plays a tribute to Cash with astounding accuracy capturing the essence of what it was like to be at a real Cash show! ‘Clive’s resemblance is uncanny’ – Rosanne Cash (eldest daughter of Johnny Cash)
Crean’s story is a testament of human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic, his 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions: Discovery, (1901 – 1904); Terra Nova (1910 – 1913); and Endurance (1914 – 1916).
A vivid, humorous and spell-binding account of one of Ireland’s greatest heroes. Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous performance by Aidan Dooley. Strabane and Castlederg residents want more say in plans for education A poll of more than 500 parents in the Strabane and Castlederg areas has found that nearly three-quarters (73%) said they hadn’t been consulted about education provision in the area and more than 80% said they should have a say in this matter. Focus groups brought together local teachers, community and business leaders as well as parents to discuss ideas and aspirations for local education. In addition more than 500 parents were surveyed in a phone poll carried out by independent company LucidTalk. The company held a public meeting, chaired by Managing Director, Bill White, on Thursday, October 1 at Strabane Library to discuss the research. Tina Merron, Chief Executive of the Integrated Education Fund which commissioned the study, said,“The key message to emerge from this project is that the authorities should be consulting with parents and wider communities when making plans for education provision. The support in Strabane and Castlederg for integrated education reflects successive Northern Ireland-wide opinion polls over many years, but the Department of Education’s area planning does not take this into consideration. This is a crucial time of budget pressures for schools and we need to make sure we get a system which meets local needs and supports parents’ wishes to really represent sensible use of public money.”
Heal Divisions John Doherty of Castlederg has been working to heal divisions in his local area for many years and was awarded a BEM for his cross-community youth work with the Ulster Project. Welcoming the LucidTalk research, he said, “The government’s area-based planning did not reach out successfully

to local communities. The IEF project presents a model for local consultation and should prompt wider engagement from the Department for Education so that the education system we develop is the system communities in Northern Ireland want. We have an exciting opportunity to bring community relations to a new stage and we owe it to future generations to build a shared future.” Education authorities were tasked in 2011 with developing strategic plans on an area basis for school provision to create what the Education Minister John O’Dowd called “a network of viable and sustainable schools”. The process and the resulting proposals have come under fire from the Education Committee and the Audit Office as not reflecting local needs and failing to address adequately the issues of empty desks and budget pressures.

St Mary’s Primary School Receives Prestigious UNICEF Award St Mary’s Primary School received the UNICEF Rights Respecting School’s Award on Tuesday, October 6 at a special assembly in the Senior School. By Michael Ferry The Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council, Elisha McCallion, was in attendance, along with Marie Devlin and Doreen Killen from the Save the Children charity, members of the school’s Board of Governors, and representatives from Strabane’s Ethnic Community Association. The Rights Respecting School’s Award centres on children knowing their rights as outlined in the UNICEF charter. Throughout the assembly the pupils highlighted some of those rights when recalling some of the work undertaken as the school. Over the past three years, St Mary’s Primary School has taken part in a lot of activities to help people locally and across the world. Last year’s shoe box appeal was one of the many ventures undertaken by the school to help other children. The Mayor and other guests were also entertained by musicians and Irish dancers from the school, and some of the school’s pupils from the Polish community who sang. A cheque was also handed over by the school’s Head Boy and Head Girl to Marie Devlin and Doreen Killen from the Save the Children charity, following a recently held sponsored walk. The Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council then handed over the certificate for the Rights Respecting School’s Award to the school’s current Head Boy and Head Girl, as well as last year’s.
Head Boy and Head Girl, Daire and Niamh present Marie Devlin and Doreen Kileen from Save the Children with a cheque for £2,500, raised during a recent sponsored walk.
Addressing the assembly, Mayor McCallion congratulated the pupils on their work and stressed that their work continues to make a difference. “There are boys and girls the same age as yourselves, some even younger, and they can’t go home because there’s war in the part of the world where they lived. The type of things you are doing, like raising money for Save the Children, can be a great help. On behalf of the citizens of Strabane and Derry I’d just like to say congratulations to St Mary’s Primary School for being aware of what’s happening and actually doing something about it,” she said. School Principal, Sandra O’Doherty then addressed the assembly, stating

that it was a “proud day” for the school. “This is a fantastic achievement. It didn’t just happen overnight, there was a lot of hard work put in by everybody working together. That work has brought us here today and I’d just like to say that we’re proud of each and every one of you. Not too many schools in the area have got this award, so we’re absolutely delighted. What we have to do now is continue to respect the lives of everyone else and other cultures. We really appreciate the Strabane Ethnic Community Association coming here today to share a bit of their culture. We’re all the same, coming from different cultures and we respect each other,” added Ms O’Doherty.

Pat Prepares For Dublin Marathon Comeback, Aged 78 Castlederg ‘Marathon Man’ Pat O’Loughlin is about to embark on his 35th Dublin City Marathon at the age of 78. By Michael Ferry The veteran sportsman will be running once again to raise funds for MS research and up to last year was the only runner from Northern Ireland, and one of 26 runners world-wide, to have completed all 34 Dublin marathons. Unfortunately, Pat had to call a halt to his preparations for last year’s Dublin City Marathon after having to undergo treatment for prostate cancer; in fact he was in Altnagelvin Hospital on day of 2014 Marathon with side effects from the radiotherapy therapy he was receiving. The ‘Herald’ caught up once again with the retired Jeweller last week to discuss his forthcoming 26.2 mile epic run, which will take place on October 26. Speaking to Pat, who was awarded an MBE and MS Silver Star for his charity work, it instantly became clear that sickness had not deterred him from his aim to run his 35th Dublin City Marathon. “I would’ve done anything to make the marathon last year but unfortunately it wasn’t to be, and I was staring out the hospital window when it was taking place. Obviously it has been a bit of a battle to prepare for the 26 miles this year but we’ll start and see how far we get on,” explained Pat.
Operation Following an operation relating to his illness, Pat’s blood count went up. Tablets helped to bring the count down to a safer level but at the expense of his energy levels. “The plan then, under the advice of my doctor, was to go off the
tablets and try and get the energy levels up again to do the marathon, and then obviously go back on them again. Dr Mitchell has been a great help to me, as have all the staff in the surgery here. We are very lucky to have such a staff and surgery here in Castlederg,” stressed Pat.
Team effort Once again Pat will be joined by his long-term running partner, Jenny Mc Menamin, who, as Pat explained, has always been a great support in training and in taking on the marathon itself. Completing the team effort, and joining his dad on the Dublin Marathon for the second time, will be Pat’s son, Ciaran, who is currently based in Dublin. “Jenny has always been a great support in getting me ready for the marathons. Her husband, Sean, is always at hand in the van behind us with a drop of water at the ready if we need it. Ciaran joined us for the first time in 2013 and he really enjoyed it, and was planning to join us again last year but unfortunately that wasn’t to be,” explained Pat. While he has been running the Dublin City Marathon for various charities since it began back in the late 70s, Pat has been running to raise funds for MS research since 2000. His friend, John Doherty, has a son with MS. Back in 2000 John was running a dance to raise some funds for research. When Pat realised that the date of the dance clashed with his annual Dublin Marathon run he decided to get a sponsor sheet and add to the funds raised at the dance. “The public response was amazing both locally and further afield in places like Belfast. And this year, as always, the people around Castlederg have been more than generous. It’s quite overwhelming. There’s a lot of good people here across the community and MS is an issue close to many a heart as there are about 30 people
