AWARDS GLORY FOR ‘RIVERVIEW CHIPPY’

Ireland’s Queen of Country Philomena Begley presents Adrian & Liz Coyle with the Henry Jones Award for Best Chip Shop in County Tyrone at the second annual NI Chip Shop Awards

For the second year running Strabane’s very own ‘Riverview Chippy’ has been awarded the esteemed ‘Northern Ireland Good Food Guide Award’ for ‘Best Chip Shop in Tyrone’. The award is yet another fine vindication of the cuisine expertise of Adrian, Louise and the Staff, which has been celebrated and enthused about throughout the Tyrone area for many years. “We were thrilled to win the award again,” said Adrian Coyle, speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week. “Thanks to all our customers who took the time and went to the trouble of nominating and then voting for us.” The ‘Riverview Chippy’ opened in November 1980 under Adrian and Louise Coyle’s management and they believe the staff has been vital in building the business to its present level. “Our customers are great and have been loyal to our shop for many years. We are serving the children and even grand-children of customers who

have supported the shop since it opened, and to them we say a huge ‘thank you’ and also a big ‘thank you’ to the Staff who have served us both in the past and at present!” enthused Adrian. The Coyle family have been in the Fish and Chip business for over 70 years and ‘Riverview’ has become a fourth generation family run branch of that business. The family were in the business in Castlederg, Strabane, Sion Mills and Derry since the 1930’s. Apart from winning the ‘Chip Shop of the Year Award’ for 2010 and 2011, ‘Riverview’ has also been awarded an ‘Eat Safe’ Award, garnering a five-star hygiene rating. This is an award given to catering premises that meet standards of food safety over and above those required by law. It is issued by the ‘Food Standards Agency for Northern Ireland’. Ultimately, after almost 31 years of trading, things are looking healthy and positive for the future of ‘Riverview Chippy’.

Helping children to see their future

BACK TO

Local optometrist supports national ‘back to school’ children’s eye health campaign. A new campaign is targeting parents, teachers and health professionals to raise awareness of children’s eye health. Led by the optical sector, the campaign is encouraging parents not to overlook their children’s eye health this Autumn.

Children with undiagnosed eye conditions are more likely to have difficulties with learning at school.

A FREE SIGHT TEST

Statistics show that up to 1 million children in the UK will return to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem. Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children’s ability to learn and on their behaviour yet often goes unrecognized by teachers, parents and by the children themselves. Local optometrist, Donal McGovern, from D McGovern Optician’s in Castle Street, Strabane and Main St, Lifford said: “There seems to be a lack of understanding about eyesight and eye health. I would urge parents to remember taking their children to see an optometrist is just as important as the trip to the dentist, or having their feet measured. This should ideally happen around the age of four, or even before, as problems detected this young can be corrected more easily.” The sooner that vision problems are detected - the better the outcome. Many childhood eye conditions, such as lazy eye and squint, can be treated if they are picked up early as the eye and visual system are actively developing during the school years. If vision problems are identified and treated, it can make a difference that lasts a lifetime. Bob Hughes, Chief Executive at the Association of Optometrists, said: “It’s an absolute public

health disgrace. There are problems which can be corrected in young people’s eyes and yet it’s a buried issue, an unknown issue, that children are losing out on a good education because they can’t see properly.” NHS Sight Tests are free for all children under the age of 16 in the North of Ireland. Parents can take their children along to a local optometrist for a free NHS Sight Test. Optometrists in the community are qualified to examine the eyes of all children, paid for by the NHS. Help towards the cost of glasses is also available on the NHS for all children. Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read, as an eye examination can be carried out using pictures. A reduce price Sight Test for any children who do not quailify for a NHS or Medical card test is available with this article for just £15 or 15 (euro), until 31/10/11. To book an eye test or for more information please call at our practice at 20 Castle St, Strabane or call (048) 71882506.

Anti Social Behaviour is a key area of concern for Strabane Community Safety Partnership. The CSP have designed and developed projects which provide support to communities in dealing with the problem of ASB, projects that aim to educate young people about becoming involved in ASB, diversionary activities that provide positive social activities to become involved in, and more focussed programmes to help young people at risk. Strabane CSP aim to reduce the levels of ASB by 5% within this financial year, and also aim to reduce graffiti, underage drinking and drug use.

The Project has been developed to inform young people of the effects of becoming involved in antisocial behaviour on themselves, their family, their community and their environment. The project is targeted at young people aged between 13-16 and will be hosted on the new Safer Strabane website and will be available for everyone to play. ‘Nevermind’ and how the alternative became the mainstream September marks the twentieth anniversary of the release of ‘Nevermind’, Nirvana’s hugely influential second album. It was an album that would help shape and inform the musical vocabulary of many a teenage music fan and its legacy still endures today as countless teens, who weren’t even born in 1991, continue to draw a major influence from the album. The album catapulted alternative rock into mainstream culture, after its humble but noble beginnings ten years earlier. In the early eighties, the “hair bands” of the time dominated mainstream airwaves and television screens. However, a hoard of college geeks, bohemian types and eccentrics saw little to identify with on MTV, so they opted to make their own kind of noise and adopt a DIY ethic that had its origins in the punk landscape of some years earlier. Slowly but surely across the USA, underground scenes developed and college rock made a mark. Young bands unmoved by the mainstream or the paths they were supposed to take in order to “make it” simply jumped into vans and took their shows to rooms filled with people just like them. College towns like Athens, Georgia were a rich melting pot of such people. As far back as 1980 saw bands like REM, B-52s and Pylon develop their craft in front small gatherings in pizza parlours, unoccupied buildings, old churches and any club willing to take a chance on giving them a gig. It was a trend that spread across the country, giving birth to alternative rock . As the decade progressed bands like REM, Black Flag, The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Sonic Youth, Violent Femmes, Camper Van Beethoven and Husker Du ploughed their own path. Mainstream breakthroughs at first seemed unlikely but by the end of the eighties it seemed quite clear that it was only a matter of time before alternative rock broke through. 1991 was the year everything had to be redefined. It was the year ‘Nevermind’ by Nirvana was released. Following on from their 1989 debut ‘Bleach’,

‘Nevermind’ reflected front man Kurt Cobain’s objective to hone in on the songwriting dynamics of bands that influenced him, such as The Pixies and The Replacements. The album was produced by Butch Vig and a statement of intent was made with the first single to be lifted from the album – ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. The anthemic chaos of the chorus struck as chord across the world and skyrocketed Nirvana from the underground to the mainstream almost overnight. The song’s origins lay in the heart of alternative rock. In a January 1994 interview for ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine, Kurt Cobain revealed that “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was an attempt to write a song in the style of The Pixies. He explained: “I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band – or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.” When ‘Nevermind’ was eventually released it knocked Michael Jackson (at this point still a global superstar) off the top of the album charts – itself a loud statement that alternative rock had indeed arrived. But Nirvana were not alone. 1991 was the year of ‘Nevermind’, but it was also the year R.E.M. released ‘Out Of Time’, Pearl Jam released the stunning debut album ‘Ten’ and Metallica released ‘The Black Album’. Alternative Rock had crossed over and given the mainstream an edge again. More than that, the divides were broken. Previously, metal-heads, rock-heads,

punks and goths stood at opposing sides of the room. In 1991 they all joined together in appreciation of something real – perhaps it was a mutual delight in mainstream culture being gate-crashed in such a way. The great rock albums are the albums that inspire people to get out there and form a band. ‘Nevermind’ and Pearl Jam’s ‘Ten’ were two such albums. While it is only right to reflect on the impact of ‘Nevermind’, it’s worth remembering that Pearl Jam are still a powerfully influential band who continue to inspire and enthral on their own terms. With charisma-free puppets like Kings of Leon filling Slane Castle, it’s reassuring to know that Pearl Jam are still out there. As for Nirvana, it’s difficult to speculate what they Irish bands from north and south of the border, and also introduced its audience to the best in alternative music from the USA, Europe and the UK. With the alternative scene in the States being particularly innovative during this period, each weekly viewing of ‘No Disco’ was an almost epiphany like experience as viewers were introduced to the likes of Sonic Youth, Mazzy Star, Grant Lee Buffalo and Pavement. Alongside these Stateside acts, Irish bands such as A-House, The Frank and Walters, Therapy?, Revelino, Sultans of Ping FC and Rollerskate Skinny were given a healthy exposure. ‘No Disco’ also introduced many viewers to electro pioneers such as Orbital and Leftfield.

Today FM’s decision to axe Donal Dineen’s ‘Small Hours’ show is a terrible move but one that should not really come as a surprise. In reality it’s surprising that Dineen’s show lasted for as long as it did on a commercial radio station. His presentation style was always reticent and he was given the freedom to play anything of his choice, with the “suits upstairs” never intervening. It was a freedom few have ever been allowed on commercial radio and it allowed for almost 15 years of quality late night radio. Within that period Dineen introduced listeners to a feast of experimental music, while also dusting off revered and obscure eclectic gems from the past. On many a night the playlist was open to change and could be dictated by mood rather than anything pre-arranged. It could go electro, it could go ambient, it could go folksy, and it could go soulful. Wherever it went, we lis-

tened with intrigue and excitement, as we were often introduced to something we may never have heard before and which had just blown our minds. The radio show was pretty much an extension of the RTE late night music programme ‘No Disco’, which Dineen presented from 1993 to 1997, before taking up his radio post on Today FM, which was then known as Radio Ireland. During its ten years on the air, ‘No Disco’ offered a televised platform for up and coming

While some viewed the programme as ‘elitist’ in its musical selections, the reality was that nowhere else catered for the ‘No Disco’ audiences’ tastes. Not since Channel 4’s ‘The Tube’ and BBC’s ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’, which both bit the bullet some five years earlier, had there been anything for an alternative music audience on television, with the notable exception of ‘Later with Jools Holland’. The fact that ‘No Disco’ was a concept spoiled on us Irish alone, churning out an hour’s worth of music videos each week, while ‘Later with Jools Holland’, great programme that it was and is, was always limited to an average of five acts each night, made it all the more precious. It has now been eight years since ‘No Disco’

would’ve gone on to do after 1994. Would they still be together if Kurt Cobain was still alive? Possibly not. But one thing to remember about Nirvana is that for a huge bulk of their lifespan, they were a positively powerful rock band. The events of April 1994 tend to cloud their legacy, but their true legacy lies in that teenager you’ll see today in a ‘Nevermind’ t-shirt, the kid with a guitar trying to learn the riff to ‘Come As You Are’ instead of lining up in an ‘X-Factor’ audition queue and the fact that even though it’s 20 years old now, ‘Nevermind’ still rocks something serious. Kurt Cobain may be gone but records never die. You have the album at home. Get off Facebook, turn off the TV, crank it up, “with the lights out it’s less dangerous, here we are now, entertain us!”

was cancelled. Ironically it has never been easier for emerging artists to record music and make music videos. Unfortunately there are no television outlets in Ireland allowing for weekly coverage of such artists and videos. In its prime and for an hour every week, ‘No Disco’ accommodated such musicians, and this was at a time when unsigned acts did not have the easy access to the multi-media tools that they do today. For that reason, today is calling out for ‘No Disco’ more than any other period. When Dineen switched to radio he maintained all the positive virtues of ‘No Disco’. While other ‘DJs’ feel compelled to strangle the airwaves with their alleged ‘personalities’, Dineen always looked on himself as merely the bridge between the listener and the great music he plays. It was never about himself; it was always about the music. Now he is about to play his last piece on music on Today FM, with the final show scheduled to go out on December 1. Record collections throughout the land owe a great deal to Donal Dineen and if there is any justice he will be on the airwaves again in 2012, with some Kraftwerk, Eno, Terry Reid, Tim Buckley, Orbital, Beirut, Tom Waits and Roxy Music rubbing shoulders with some new music just waiting to bless our ears.

DSL Makes Business Awards Shortlist A local business set up just two years ago has made the shortlist for this year’s Celebrate Success Awards to be held in Belfast on November 9. DSL (Direct Sound and Light) is Strabane’s only music store, specialising in instruments, PA gear, lights, cables and strings. The Awards are supported by the Prince’s Trust and celebrate the achievements of young people and aspiring business men and women. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, Niall Speak of DSL expressed his delight at making the shortlist. “We received the letter yesterday inviting us to the awards ceremony in November and I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to attend. We’ve worked really hard over the last few years to make this busi-

ness work. In these times, a business is never an easy thing to run but we’ve managed to find a niche market right here in Strabane with musicians, DJs, hotels and the local Council looking to avail of our service,” explained Niall. It is now hoped that DSL may claim one of the esteemed awards on offer on the night of the ceremony, but making the shortlist is success enough, according to Niall. “Business is going well but there is always room for improvement and I hope that making the Shortlist for the Celebrate Success Awards this year gives us the opportunity to develop the business and take it further. The demand is always out there and it seems to be growing so we hope to be ready to accommodate it.” Cpt Trevor McFarland and Lady Cpt Patricia Devine presenting a bouquet to Juvenile mentor Karen Ballantine.

Their much anticipated second album Maudy Tree promises to raise their profile even further. The sound of Blueflint is defined by the sublime close harmonies of Deborah Arnott and Clare Neilson whose voices, both ethereal and warm, interweave in ballads and songs of eerie melancholy and heartfelt charm. Intertwining banjos, fiddle, double-bass and drums accompany the singers in beautifully-crafted songs that swoop easily from the dark underbelly of folk to buoyant Americana-tinged ballads. Blueflint successfully thwart attempts at musical pigeonholing; their fresh and original sound refuses to sit squarely in any one genre, bringing an unexpected twist to the banjo sound and gaining them fans from across the musical spectrum. Fri Oct 7th & Sat Oct 8th Fight Night is a gripping journey charting the comeback of Dan Coyle Jr, a failed amateur boxer from a long line of accomplished fighters. Living in the twin shadows of his overbearing father and his brother’s Olympic success, Dan lets his training slip in favour of girls and booze. Then, an incident with his father minutes before a crucial bout splinters the family and exiles Dan from the ring. It’s not until the birth of his own son years later that his competitive fire is reignited, and he takes the first tentative steps on his road to redemption. Gallaher the Great – From the north-west to New Zealand

As the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand reaches its climax this month, one is reminded of the legendary Dave Gallaher. The man from the north-west is nothing short of an idol in those parts, but outside of rugby circles he is little known in his homeland. By Kevin McAnena This month marks the anniversary of both his birth and his death (he lived from October 1873 – October 1917), so no better time to put the spotlight on this local, forgotten, hero.

Down under he is best known as the captain of ‘The Originals’, the first New Zealand team to be labelled the All Blacks, but his story begins in County Donegal. These ties to the north-west led Letterkenny Rugby Club to name their grounds after him. Martin Moylan Donegal man, the legendary Dave Gallaher. is President of the club, and he takes up Gallaher’s remarkable story: fact he wrote a book on rugby skills which is still used today.” “He was born in Ramelton in 1873, but then 36 appearances for the All Blacks at the start emigrated to New Zealand with his parents of the last century cemented his status as a about 5 years later. Local man to grow beard in aid of good cause Local man Michael Lafferty is in the midst of a hairy time at present, but all in the name of charity. The Clady man is organising a beard growing stunt to raise money for Children’s Cancer Charity, CLIC Sargent.

Michael Lafferty with 2 months growth!

Each week in Northern Ireland two children or young people are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. CLIC Sargent Northern Ireland acts as a lifeline keeping families together when the unimaginable happens. It provides clinical, psychosocial, emotional and financial care and support to them and their families. There are currently 23 children

and young people in the County Tyrone area who are receiving support from CLIC Sargent. Commenting on his fundraising venture, Michael said; “I started 2 months ago and I am going to let my beard grow as long as possible between now and Christmas, before having it cut in the New Year. I decided to raise funds for CLIC Sargent as I believe the work this charity does really makes a big difference to the lives of children and young people with cancer and their families. All donations are very welcome, so please don’t let it be all for nothing!”. Fionnuala Savage, Community Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent said “I would encourage as many people as possible to support Michael in

his beard growing, fundraising venture. This is an excellent idea and I hope others will be inspired by his great efforts. Money raised through fundraising events like this will allow CLIC Sargent to continue supporting local families in Tyrone area. I would like to thank Michael, for supporting CLIC Sargent and wish them the best of luck.’ To sponsor Michael please visit his online fundraising page online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/MichaelLafferty. Kind locals come out in force to raise much needed funds for ‘rare’ condition

‘Action Duchenne’ night a massive success in Paddy Mac’s A hugely successful charity night was held in Paddy Mac’s Bar on Saturday, September 10, in aid of Action Duchenne, which is providing vital support to a Strabane couple whose little boy was diagnosed with the rare condition. Five-year-old Lewis Harper, the youngest child of Clare (McShane) Harper and Fergal Harper, was diagnosed last year with Duchenne, which a form of muscular dystrophy. Action Duchenne aims to support and promote innovative research into a cure and effective medicines for Duchenne/ Becker Muscular Dystrophy. The charity, which is led by Duchenne families, aims to promote awareness of the condition, to improve care services, and

Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, Lewis’s mother Clare reflected on a great night had by all, and also looked ahead to future events. “We held a Karaoke night in Paddy Macs, where all the participants got sponsor sheets. There was also a raffle, which was a huge success. More sponsor sheets are coming in so we should have raised from the night around £3,500 for Action Duchenne. It’s great to be able to raise funds while people can still have a great night’s craic along the way. “The main focus at the moment is trying to get money raised for research. At present there is no treatment and no cure for Duchenne. There are possibilities in the pipeline over in the United States, and if they develop further and meet approval then next year, if possible, we will take Lewis to the States, but this year is about focusing on research. We provide access to a range of educational for people living with Duchenne at want to do all we can for any families and support/development programmes every stage of the condition. that come behind us. Nothing prepares

you for being told that your child has a condition and that there is no treatment or cure. It’s that blunt. You’re simply sent home with that news. Naturally since finding out the news we’ve been looking into everything to do with Duchenne, and the main thing is supporting the research and so far the response we’ve witnessed locally has been fantastic,” explained Clare. Anyone or any business who wishes to get involved in an event in aid of Action Duchenne is free to contact Clare, her husband Fergal or indeed any member of the McShane/Harper family.
