BIG FINAL FEVER IN DONEGAL! The hills of Donegal are at fever pitch as the county prepares for only it’s second ever All Ireland Final this weekend. Team manager Jimmy McGuinness can complete probably the most remarkable turnaround in fortunes for any GAA team ever if he leads the Tir Chonaill men to All Ireland glory. Since this Donegal team suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Armagh in the qualifiers just two years ago they have undergone a sensational turnaround, and are now hot favourites to win Sam Maguire for only the second time in their history.
BUTCHER STREET, LIFFORD TEL: 00353 74 91 42225
Pride has been restored to this proud footballing county, and Donegal flags that lay hidden in cupboards for years are now proudly flying from every house, lamp post and car in the county. Inside the paper starting on page 31 is a special 12 page pull-out to document one of the most exciting episodes in the county’s history, as the excitement builds and judgement day draws closer - Up Donegal!

Y
ou want to look your best and if you wear spectacles, choosing the right eyewear has a major part to play in looking good and having a good image of yourself. Maybe when you’re considering your next pair of spectacles you think that it’s just a matter of choosing the right frame. It’s true that having a frame that suits you and the look you seek is a vital part of it, but the lenses you choose have an equally important role to play. You can ruin the effect of an expensive frame by having lenses that are too thick or unduly reflect light. That’s why we’re offering a free upgrade to thin and light lenses during September and October on any single vision and Varilux lens (excluding Varilux Liberty) with Crizal Forte and Optifog. So call us right away and you’ll soon be on the way to better-looking spectacles.

He said, “The absence of signage identifying The signage was installed last Thursday and Marian Park has presented persistent problems hopefully its provision will make life easier for residents living there down through the not only local residents but for people trying to locate addresses in the area. years.
Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Jay McCauley says that the erection of street signage at Marian Park in the town will hopefully alleviate the persistent problems local residents have been encountered in terms of service providers and visitors being able to locate their homes in this part of the Head of the town.

A primary school in Clady was among a number of organisations to be recognised by the Stormont Assembly recently for its efforts in improving the service it offers by developing its staff. St Columba’s Primary School was given a silver award in the Investors in People framework. The Clady school was one of 10 organisations throughout northern Ireland to pick up the accolade earlier this month, at the Investor In People celebration event held in Belfast Castle. The Investors in People (IIP) framework is a business improvement tool that helps organisations to compete and succeed through improved people performance, and at present over 1,500 small, medium and large organisations from all sectors and sizes of business in northern Ireland are using Investors in People to transform their businesses. The local school has been one of the most success-
ful in that regard, and has now received this special accreditation. Stormont’s Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry, offered his congratulations: “Your accomplishments indicate that your organisations are not just prepared to attain a certain standard but are willing to go beyond this. Northern Ireland employers also experienced a higher percentage increase in quality of products, productivity of the workforce, ability of staff to do their jobs, volume of sales and satisfaction amongst customers than counterparts in the rest of the UK.” Investors in People has long been acknowledged as the most successful framework for business improvement through people. It helps organisations of every size, sector and location to compete and succeed through improved people performance. The approach to its delivery has recently changed, becoming more tailored to individual business needs, to help organisations develop, implement as well as evaluate their people management and development strategies.

Youth Football Under 14 Season Review Owen Roes U14
Why pay for an EYE TEST when it’s FREE at
EYEWEAR Another season has come and gone for the local under 14 footballers of the various north-west clubs, with relatively little in the way of trophies but much valuable experience garnered. Underage coaches will be at pains to stress that competing at this level is all about the learning process, and trophies are not the be all and end all. Despite that, the boys of Strabane Sigersons will be on Cloud 9 after winning the Grade Three league earlier this month. They enjoyed a comfortable 7-7 to 4-2 win over Moy in the final, ensuring they had some silverware to show for the season’s hard work. It could so easily have been the double for the team, but they lost out in the Championship final to a Trillick side they had already beaten in the league play offs. Meanwhile, Owen Roes will have learned much from competing among the top young footballers in Tyrone, as they spent the season in Grade One. Despite exiting the Championship at the quarter final stage to Dromore, the experience of playing at a high standard, in a division dominated by a Derrylaughan side head and shoulders above all others, will stand to the young Leckpatrick players in their development. Newtownstewart plied their trade at Grade Two this season having proved strong at this level in recent years. Luck was not on their side in 2012,
though, as they finished runners up in the League final by just one point – Pomeroy beating them 1-8 to 2-4. The St Eugene’s club were unfortunate to lose by the bare minimum in their Championship semi-final as well, this time to Naomh Mhuire. The other local sides all faced each other at one stage or another in Grade Four, where Glenelly and Castlederg fared best. Glenelly made it to the Championship final earlier this month on the back of an impressive win over Clan na Gael, but the team, managed by Seamus McBride and Garry McGlinchey lost out to neighbours Gortin in the final on a scoreline of 4-14 to 1-5. Again, the experience of a Championship run and the excitement that brings will stay with the young team and whet their appetite for the future. Glenelly exited the League playoffs earlier, losing to Tattyreagh. Castlederg were also beaten finalists at the hands of a double-winning Gortin side. The Derg boys losing the League final by four points - 3-7 to 3-3. They were knocked out of the Championship by underdogs Clan na Gael, who have struggled for numbers for showed their worth in making their way to the Championship semi final, before losing to their neighbours Glenelly. Finally, Urney exited the Championship early after a first round defeat to Castlederg, and although they qualified for the league play offs, they were unable to field.

A series of events are set to take place in Glenmornan next month to celebrate the re-opening of the local community hall. The hall has been closed for much of this year for renovation work, carried out with the help of grant money. It’s now due to re-open with a number of events over the first weekend of October. The festivities will see Castlederg folk group The Logues play a concert in the hall on Friday 5th October, while a hypnotist will entertain the crowds on Saturday 6th. Before all that visitors to the hall can take a trip down memory lane as a special photo exhibition delves into Glenmornan’s past. A collection of pictures of local community sights and characters will be on show on Thursday 4th October from 8pm – the idea, to give an insight into community life down through the years. Carol Early is overseeing the exhibition: “We’ve had a really good response, what we’ve done is gather photos from different people from the parish - even the likes of gathering peats in the hill. It’s about conjuring up memories of the past.”” she said. “I’ve got photographs of the old school from 1959. I’ve got photos of George Sigerson - who is always associated with Strabane but he actually came from Leckpatrick Parish, at Holyhill House. I’ve
got Owen Roes juveniles, we’ve discovered that we had a camogie team, there was a cricket team; there was draughts - people used to go around the house and play draughts to pass the evening.” She continued: “We had a couple of bands in Glenmornan - they used to march from the top of the glen right through, and then they would have marched from the town out. I’ve also got photos of the Bishop coming, and other things like that - anything and everything to do with the community.” The unique exhibition promises to provide a poignant illustration of the changing face of a rural community, and will be a one off. Carol said: “People are very protective of their photographs, and rightly so because it’s part of history, and part of their history. This is about sharing it. So what we’re doing is taking all the photographs and putting them all together and then getting them back to people as soon as possible so they won’t get damaged.” The restored community hall is open to everyone who wants to avail of it, and has regularly been used for various activities such as Irish Dancing, youth clubs, badminton and bowls. Those behind the renovation effort hope to see the hall return to the centre of life in the Glen, as it is for many communities throughout Ireland.

Local singer to make guest appearance on Daniel O’Donnell’s TV Show
By Michael Ferry
Lisa Has The Golden Touch Country sensation Lisa McHugh’s star continues to rise at great speed, so much so that the Letterkenny-based Glasgow-girl tells the ‘Herald’ she has to “pinch herself” at times to be sure it’s all not just some amazing dream. Well, Lisa has made this dream a reality and is now looking forward to her invitation to be a guest on ‘Daniel O’Donnell’s 30 Years in the Music Industry’ TV Show together with Mary Duff, Marc Roberts and Michael English on Sunday, October 7 at the Millennium Forum, Derry. The programme celebrates Daniel’s 30 years in the music industry and will be recorded for a December broadcast on TG4 TV; a channel Lisa already has great association with. “I’ve worked with TG4 before when I was on the ‘Glór Tíre’ programme,” recalls Lisa, talking to the ‘Herald’ last week from Mayo, where she was performing that night. “They’re all a lovely team and I’m really looking forward to being part of Daniel’s show. It was a great honour to be asked and it should be a fantastic night. If I’m in this business half as long as Daniel I’d be doing well. He has achieved so much over these past thirty years and he’s someone that we in the business model ourselves on. Daniel’s done incredibly well across the world, never mind just in Ireland and he’s an inspiration to so many people, so it’s great to class him as a friend and be part of his big celebration.”
“
8, Virgin 188 and BBC iPlayer from Northern Nashville CM Festival, Thurso, Caithness. T ransmission began on Tuesday September 18 at 9.00pm and continues thereafter for four weeks at the same time, and repeated again at 9pm on the following Sunday. The programme includes highlights filmed recently at the Northern Nashville CM Festival, Thurso, Caithness in the Scottish highlands along with a day in Lisa’s life filmed when a camera crew visited her at home in Letterkenny.
Youtube Her latest promotional single, ‘Why’d Ya Come In Here?’ is getting great reaction on both national and local radio and has already generated over 25,000 hits on YouTube. Itwas filmed on location in a school classroom and is transmitted on all relevant programmes including Hot Country, Ireland West Music TV, Phil Mack International Country Show and Music Express all on SKY TV Showcase Channel 191. This is a lot to take in for a young lady who made her first steps into the music business just a few years ago. “It has all happened so quickly,” she agrees. “ ‘Glór Tíre’ was in 2009 and I got to the final of the show, which I wasn’t expecting to at all. I wasn’t sure that being the only person on the show that was born outside of Ireland was going to be a good thing or a bad thing for me.
When I was growing up I loved listening to and singing along to Country music and going to the dances with my mum and dad
Major draw Lisa has fast become a major draw across the country, but there is an added appeal to her appearances in the north-west given her family roots. “My dad was born in Castlederg and my mum was born in Donegal. We still have a lot of family in both Donegal and Castlederg. When I was young we used to come over to both places as much as we could, especially during the school holidays. From then I grew to love being over here in Ireland, so much so that when I decided to start my own band it was nothing strange for me to move over here and give it 100 percent. Thankfully it has been fantastic since I moved over here so I don’t regret one single bit of it,” Lisa explains. Given her family roots, we ask if there is a sense of ‘homecoming’ to her shows in the north-west. “There is,” she replies immediately. “Everyone is always so supportive. I am very lucky that I actually have the support in my hometown of Glasgow and I have it in Tyrone and Donegal. I really have three hometowns. People have welcomed me here with open arms. Even outside of those areas, in places like Cork and Tipperary the reaction has been fantastic so far and hopefully and that will continue.” Prior to her performance with Daniel, Lisa is presently one of the artists highlighted on SKY TV’s ‘Ceol Country’ on BBC Alba Channel 168, Freesat Channel 110, Freeview Channel
”
Thankfully it turned out to be an extremely good thing and people since then have been continually supportive. Over the past year especially, the band and myself have noticed a huge change with so many opportunities coming our way: being part of the Rosette Records label now; having the chance to go to Nashville earlier this year and perform at the Grand Ole Opry with Gene Watson, which was an experience I’ll never forget; getting the chance to record a duet with him; recording a duet with Daniel O’Donnell; it has just been one thing after another. I just have to pinch myself at times to make sure this is really happening to me in such a short space of time but I’m having a fantastic time and I’m lucky to be surrounded by fantastic musicians. They’re probably the best in the country. But not only are they great musicians but they’re great friends as well. We’re just like one big family.”
New generation Lisa is just one of a new generation of Country acts that has observed a major change in the audience demographics at the dances over recent years, with herself and a host of other
Local Country singing sensation Lisa McHugh who has been invited on October 7th to guest on Daniel O’Donnells ‘30 Years in the Music Industry’ TV Show.. The episode will be shown on TG4 in December. new acts bringing in a younger but equally as enthusiastic audience. “When I was growing up I loved listening to and singing along to Country music and going to the dances with my mum and dad,” she recalls. “It wasn’t exactly seen as the cool thing to do when I was at school but that didn’t bother me, I just loved it. When I had the chance to start my own band I grabbed it with both arms and when I first went on the road the audience was probably a thirty-plus age group, by and large. But the recent emergence of younger acts like Nathan Carter, Derek Ryan and myself has seen a huge change in the clientele that is coming along to the shows. There are even kids as young as five and six if there’s any outdoor daytime shows going on and they’re all singing the songs. Then, of course, at the dances you have the eighteen-plus group coming along and they’re not even coming to drink but just to
have a dance, a jive and sing-song, just like the older members of the audience.” Indeed, Irish Country music seems to be in a midst of a new golden age, with Lisa McHugh very much at the forefront. Pop and Politics: A Lethal Cocktail Philomena Lynott, mother of Thin Lizzy front man Phil Lynott, has hit out at US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney after he played the band’s classic ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ at the Republican National Convention last month. Speaking to ‘Hot Press’ magazine she cited Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan’s “anti-gay” and “pro-rich” policies as the reasons behind her disapproval. She insisted that her son, who died in 1986, would have supported Barack Obama in the US election. She told the magazine: “As far as I am concerned, Mitt Romney’s opposition to gay marriage and to civil unions for gays makes him anti-gay – which is not something that Philip would have supported. He had some wonderful gay friends, as indeed I do, and they deserve equal treatment in every respect, whether in Ireland or the United States.” She continued: “Neither would Philip have supported his policy of taxing the poor and offering tax cuts to the rich, which Paul Ryan is advocating. There is certainly no way that I would want the Lynott name to be associated with any of those ideas.” Lynott added that she felt Paul Ryan was “abusing” her son’s music and that she felt the use of the track “could hurt people”. She said of this: “There is nothing I can do about it except express my views, but I do want to be clear that I would not want Philip’s music to be used in any way that could hurt a single person, and this is the effect of what happened with Paul Ryan using and abusing my son’s music in that way. A lot of fans and musicians are very angry about it and I can fully understand why.” It’s not just Philomena Lynott who has rejected Romney’s campaign. He has also made a mistake in trying to use the music of The Silversun Pickups. The alternative rock band’s attorney has sent a cease and desist letter to Romney, while the band stated in a newsletter that neither they nor their representatives were asked for permission to use ‘Panic Switch’, the band’s most famous chart-topper. They also noted that were not at all keen to lend their support to the Romney campaign. “We don’t like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don’t like the Romney campaign,” Front man Brian Aubert stated. “We’re nice, approachable people. We won’t bite. Unless you’re Mitt Romney! We were very close to

just letting this go because the irony was too good.” These are the latest in a long running series of campaign faux-pas by political figures, going all the way back to the eighties. Ronald Reagan, during his 1984 re-election campaign, tried to capitalise on the surging popularity of Bruce Springsteen’s track ‘Born in the USA’. “America’s future rests in a thousand dreams inside our hearts,” Reagan said during a speech, conveniently in Hammonton, New Jersey. “It rests in the message of hope in the songs of a man so many young Americans admire: New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen.” Soon after, The Boss hit out at Reagan during a concert in Pittsburgh just before playing ‘Johnny 99’, a song about an unemployed auto worker who turns to murder. “The President was mentioning my name the other day,” said Springsteen, “and I kinda got to wondering what his favourite album must’ve been. I don’t think it was the ‘Nebraska’ album (an album often considered to be Springsteen’s response to ‘Reaganomics’). I don’t think he’s been listening to this one.” Indeed, Reagan and his staffers clearly misinterpreted the chest-beating, fist-pumping adrenalin of ‘Born In The USA’ as gung-ho patriotism. In fact, it’s perhaps one of the most misinterpreted songs of the last 30 years. Springsteen himself said it’s about “a workingclass man” going through a “spiritual crisis, in which man is left lost...It’s like he has nothing left to tie him into society anymore. He’s isolated from the govern-
A light in the Alley The year is set to conclude in style for Belfast and Strabane three-piece A Northern Light. The band will embark on a North American Tour in December after catching the eyes and ears of a stateside management company at a recent festival. The ‘Herald’ caught up with A Northern Light However, before the band, consisting of Darren Doherty on vocals and guitar, Colm Laverty on bass and Omar Ben Hassine on drums, fly across the Atlantic, they will be performing a special homecoming show in the Alley Theatre in Strabane on Friday, November 16. The band, whose sound is a colourful sonic exploration of modern rock and electronic music, are also about to release their debut single – a double A-side, ‘Pilgrim’/’March Into The Light’.
lead singer Darren, before the band’s performance at the recent Strabane Unplugged session in the Pool Bar and firstly asked him how the Alley Theatre gig came about. “It’s a dream to be playing the Alley,” explained Darren. “Omar and I have been talking ever since the Alley was opened, saying that it would be great place to have a live show if we ever got to a point where we could fill the place. We believe we’ve now reached that point. We also thought that it
ment. Isolated from his family...to the point where nothing makes sense.” Clearly, these are not the themes you want to be celebrating as you walk onto the podium during an election campaign! Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’ is ideal for any campaign and has been used as recently as this year for the Democratic National Convention. Jim Webb used the song for his successful bid for one of Virginia’s U.S. Senate seats in 2006, as did Hillary Clinton during the 2008 Democratic presidential primary campaign. However, when George W. Bush used the song at campaign events during the 2000 presidential race he was forced to stop using it after receiving a cease and desist letter from Petty’s publisher. Petty did not want the use of his song to be construed as an endorsement of candidate Bush. Jackson Browne, a staunch liberal, won a copyright battle against Senator John McCain, getting an apology and an undisclosed sum of money from the 2008 presidential nominee for a pro-McCain Web video that used Browne’s hit song ‘Running On Empty’. Following the court ruling, McCain, the RNC and the Ohio GOP Party pledged to get artists’ permission in the future before using their work. It seems to be a major problem exclusive to Republican candidates in the States. Democrat candidates never have a problem with their choice to campaign music. In 1992, Democrat presidential candidate Bill Clinton successfully used Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Don’t Stop’. In 2004 John Kerry had the support of Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., Dixie Chicks, John Fogerty, Eddie Vedder, James Taylor and John Mellencamp to name but a few, culminating in the tour called ‘Vote For Change’, with a strong anti-Bush sentiment evident on each date. It was, however, not enough, and Bush secured a second term in office. In the UK, music and electioneering is equally unbalanced; the first combination of the two possibly being Red Wedge in 1987, which was a collective of musicians who attempted to engage young people with politics in general, and the policies of the Labour Party in particular, during the period leading up to the 1987 general election, in the hope of ousting the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher. Fronted by Billy Bragg, Paul Weller and The Communards lead singer Jimmy Somerville, they put on concert tours and appeared in the media, adding their support to the Labour Party campaign. It didn’t work. In fact it took ten more years and ex-Ugly Rumours front man Tony Blair’s use of D:REAM’s ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ to give a new soundtrack to a ‘New Labour’. As ‘The Red Flag’ and ‘Between The Wars’ were cast
would be a great opportunity, before we went to America, to come back to where we are from and where we are really appreciated and do a really successful show. So we decided to approach the Alley with the idea and they were very enthusiastic about it.” The band is promising to give the audience at the Alley something that will stay with them both musically and visually for a long time to come. “It’ll be the biggest live production we’ve ever put on so far,” says Darren. “Again, it’s a show that we’ve talked about for a long time and anybody who has seen A Northern Light before will not have seen us like this. We want to make it something worth coming to see, so there will be plenty of lighting, dry-ice, theatrics on stage and screens. Essentially we just want to make that leap and also try and give people a night they won’t forget.” After the Alley Theatre show, America beckons and all it took was an email! “We got an email asking if we’d be interested in going on tour in the United States. Within a couple of weeks we had a meeting with the management who sent the email, so we knew it was all for real. We’ll be going on a 16-date tour, flying to New York on December 2 and we do New York, Chicago, Cincinnati, St Louis, Kansas, Memphis, New
aside, Downing Street beckoned. Blair’s successor, Gordon Brown, fared less well. He famously named the Arctic Monkeys as his favourite band, but could not name a single hit when confronted by an interviewer. Meanwhile, current British Prime Minister David Cameron has named-dropped some of his favourite artists since he emerged as the Conservative party leader. In May 2008, the Old Etonian named ‘The Eton Rifles’ by The Jam as one of his favourite songs. Cameron is reported to have said, “I was one, in the corps. It meant a lot, some of those early Jam albums we used to listen to. I don’t see why the left should be the only ones allowed to listen to protest songs.” However, this garnered a stern reply from the song’s writer, Paul Weller. “Which part of it didn’t he get? It wasn’t intended as a jolly drinking song for the cadet corps,” spat the ‘Modfather’. Cameron has also declared himself as a devoted fan of The Smiths, much to the displeasure of the band’s songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Johnny Marr. While millions of pounds have so far not been enough to reunite the band, Cameron can at least take credit for uniting Morrissey and Marr again, albeit briefly, to publically denounce his love for their old band. “I’m sure when Morrissey finds that he’s getting an endorsement from the leader of the Conservative party he will think, ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’,” Cameron joked to the BBC in 2009. Mozza thought that joke wasn’t funny anymore and published a 1,224-word diatribe attacking the Prime Minister and his support for foxhunting. He followed Marr, who took to Twitter to demand: “David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don’t. I forbid you to like it.” “It was not for such people that either ‘Meat is Murder’ or ‘The Queen is Dead’ were recorded,” added Morrissey. So there you have it. Mixing pop and politics is a difficult game to master, especially for someone on the right. Irish politicians have yet to embrace it with the same fervour and prospect of failure as those addressed above. Imagine our very own potential councillors and MLAs driving through the town with one of their favourite songs blasting out. What about those folks on the hill? I’m guessing McGuinness might opt for some Undertones, while Robinson seems like a Genesis fan. What about our southern politicians? I wonder what gets Enda stomping. I get a Grateful Dead vibe off Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, with maybe a touch of some PIL. Of course, I could be wrong, I could be right.
Mexico, LA, San Francisco and then we fly back home for Christmas on December 22. It’s a headline tour and we’re hoping that it will be the first of many. Our association with the management company is long-term so hopefully the next couple of years will be about laying the ground work and getting the band into a successful position,” explains Darren. The management got in touch with the band because they thought that what they were doing musically may go down better in the States. Darren agrees. “Maybe there are elements in the music that don’t translate as well over here, or maybe it’s not the sort of thing NME is looking for. We love Rush, who are a big influence on what we do, and Blink 182 and Angels and Airwaves and things like that, so I suppose it does make sense. It’s a really exciting prospect and I’ve never been out of the UK and Ireland in my life so I can’t wait. It will just be a pleasure to get to play our tunes to a completely new audience every night and see how they take it in. It’s going to be unbelievable.” A Northern Light plays the Alley Theatre on Friday, November 16 and tickets are available now. The line-up of show band Legends include Frankie McBride originally a member of the Polka Dots Showband. McBride found fame in 1967 with a cover version of Bill Anderson’s ballad ‘Five Little Fingers’. The song reached UK number 19 in August some 45 years ago. This made Mc Bride a house hold name in Ireland and the UK. Joining Frankie Mc Bride is fellow Omagh crooner Brian Coll who shot to fame as lead singer of the Plattermen and later, the Bucka-roos. Coll’s unique vocal Brian Coll talents seen him as a popular attraction in ballrooms the length and breath of Ireland and even further afield. Another house hold name who will make the short trip from Strabane on 8th October is Hugo Duncan. In the early 70s he was spotted on a TV talent show. By the time he was twenty-one he had formed his own band ‘Hugo Duncan and the Tall Men’ and had a number one hit in the Irish charts with “Dear God”. Hugo joined Radio Foyle during the 1980s doing holiday relief, after which he was offered a job presenting his own show Hugo Duncan on a weekly basis. He is now a regular presenter on Radio Ulster each weekday from 13:30 to 15:00 and the theme tune used on his BBC Radio Ulster show is Rocky Top. While he closes each programme with Yakety Sax, also known as the theme to The Benny Hill Show the wee man from Strabane as he is fondly referred to is still as popular today as he ever was and will sure to be a hit on the night. The glamorous Sharon Nixon is the only female on the bill and adds glamour to the evening as she will sing many songs made famous by the Sharon Nixon female show band singers. She has had several television performances including a stint on ITV’s Michael Barrymore shows: My kinda music & My kinda people, the BBC’s Cool country program & The Hugo Show plus RTE’s Eurostar & The Late, Late Show. In 2007, Sharon & her band, achieved the title of best new band at the Irish country music awards, held in the Setanta house hotel, Kildare. Sharon has also played support to the celebrated Charley Pride at the prestigious
Waterfront Hall. Sharon has recently finished a very successful UK tour with Barnbrack and proved herself a favourite in Blackpool as an entertainer at ‘The Ultimate Irish Weekend’. Sharon’s energetic performance, fuelled with an electric passion for show band music is one not to be missed. Eddie Carey is a native of Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, and is the newest voice on the music scene. He was recently recognised as the ‘Best Local Entertainer’ at this year’s West Limerick ‘102FM Entertainment Awards’, as well as ‘Best Country Newcomer’ by Irish Entertainment Awards. Eddie is currently in the studio recording a new CD and already radio stations are playing his promo CD, The Old House, which i n c l u d e s bonus tracks ‘Limerick’, ‘You’re My Lady’ and ‘Help Yourself’. Eddie Carey Eddie should bring a fresh youth full touch to the evening in St. Theresa’s Hall. Headlining the evening and bringing the gala concert to a close will be the Miami Showband. The Miami Showband are considered to be the greatest exponent of the show band era still touring today. At the height of their popularity thousands of adoring fans packed venues across Ireland the UK and America. Tragedy struck the band on 31st July 1975, however, surviving members Des Lee Stephen Travers and Ray Millar performed at a memorial concert in Dublin in 2005. Later that year the band decided to tour and have been touring ever since. In their heyday The Miami show band were among a handful of Irish acts to perform on Sunday night at The Palladium. The Miami had a string of hits such as ‘There’s Always Me’, ‘I’m Yours’ and the famous ‘The Candy Store On The Corner’ not to forget ‘Every Step of the Way’ which was the first song by an Irish artist to go straight in as a number one single in the Irish charts. And who could forget their version of the 1910 Fruit Gum Co’s hit ‘Simple Simon Says’. Original lead singer Des Lee will perform these and many more popular songs that made the Miami Ireland’s number one show band. As the say themselves, some bands make headlines one band made history...The Miami Show Band. Here is your chance to take a trip down memory lane with a nostalgic night of show band hits song by the original stars of the Show band era at St Theresa’s Hall, Sion Mills on Monday 8th October. Hosted by Pio Mc Cann. Tickets on sale from Mary Quinn Hair Dressing, Sion Mills, Spar Shop Sion Mills and Kellys Mace Store, Melmount Road Strabane. Or you can call 028 71382876. COME ON DONEGAL! GAA ALL IRELAND SENIOR FINAL SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2012 DONEGAL -v- MAYO Croke Park 3.30pm
12-PAGE BIG FINAL SPECIAL FROM THE HERALD
Fans can steer us over the line - McGuinness DONEGAL manager Jim McGuinness says that the tens of thousands of TirChonaill fans can be his team’s 16th man in the All-Ireland final. The magnificent Donegal support created a crescendo of noise against Cork in the semi-final - and the masses of green and gold are expected to turn Croke Park into a small corner of Donegal on All-Ireland final Sunday. The scenes pre-match in the semi were special to McGuinness as 40,000 Donegal supporters gave his team a greeting that meant there were in town for one thing only - a win. “The support at the minute has just been fantastic. Even in the warm-up they were chanting ‘Donegal’, which was unbelievable for our players,” McGuinness said. As David Coldrick sounded his final whistle, the stands erupted and 20 years of pent up emotion filled the Dublin 9 air. McGuinness’s own emotions got the better of him. He’d led the group to the Promised Land.
“When we stared out on the journey in the middle of May up in Breffni Park, it was a long way to the All-Ireland final, and to be there now is fantastic really for this group of players,” McGuinness said. “Last year, we tried to put a framework in place that we could help the boys to achieve things in the game and we tried to build that over the winter. I think the supporters understand that and they understand what we’re trying to do. “We’re trying to move the thing forward, develop the lads individually and develop them as a group. “And I suppose the lesson from last year was try to get more scores on the board, and they’re aware of that as well.” A frenzy is already underway across the county - and now, as the ticket scramble begins, Donegal is walking tall as if it were ‘92 all over again. For McGuinness,
the support means a lot. He’s experienced the dark days too, but now Donegal sees light at the end of its tunnel. He said: “They have been with us every step of the way really since Breffni Park, and I think after the 2-18 (Donegal scored) in the Ulster final there was maybe a wee bit more optimism in them that this group of players could achieve something in the All-Ireland series and they’ve come out in huge numbers as a result. “The boys have a great relationship with the supporters as well, and the kids and everything else. “It’s a great shot in the arm for Donegal football to be honest with you. We just hope now that the synergy that it creates, there will be a Michael Murphy, or a Colm McFadden, or a Rory Kavanagh in the offering in a few years’ time as a result of it.”
Donegal manager Jim McGuinness
COME ON DONEGAL! GAA ALL IRELAND SENIOR FINAL DONEGAL -v- MAYO SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2012
Final is ‘just another game’ JIM McGuinness insists that the All-Ireland final will be ‘no different’ to anything that his Donegal have faced in his two years at the helm. By Chris McNulty Donegal is swelling in the grip of All-Ireland fever after an epic semi-final win over Cork, but McGuinness had the players’ feet back on the ground at training in Ballybofey last week - and now the Donegal boss plots the downfall of Mayo. “This is no different to any other game,” McGuinness said. “This happens to be the final, but we will treat this no differently to any other situation that we have faced this year. “Our sharp focus has turned now to the final and we’ll leave no stone unturned in trying to win it. “We’re aiming now to build for the final. We’re trying to deliver and make something special happen for Donegal. The key is our preparation. “It is great to be where we are now and we’re all looking forward to a great month ahead.” McGuinness has called on Donegal supporters to give his players space, but says that the buzz in Donegal has been something to savour. He said: “The players
must be allowed to concentrate on the job at hand - and that is preparing for the All-Ireland final.
There might be extra butterflies in the belly come Sunday but Donegal supremo Jim McGuinness says they will be treating it as just another game. Mayo Manager James Horan
“It has been fantastic. The feelgood factor has been unbelievable. It is great for the people of Donegal to get an opportunity to look forward to an All-Ireland final again.” Mayo manager James Horan, a former lecturer at Letterkenny Institute of Technology, is looking forward to the big day. “Donegal are playing good football, so it’ll be interesting with two different styles,” he said.
Mayo are without their captain Andy Moran, but overcame what seemed a crippling loss to take the Dubs to task in their semi, as they led by ten points at one point, before letting Dublin back to within striking distance. Mayo’s response was the same as Donegal’s at the end of their game an outpouring of sheer raw emotion at the end that set the tone for three weeks of football fever in both counties. McGuinness and Horan are both in their second years in charge - and
the similarities are striking. Horan took over a Mayo team that exited the 2009 Championship thanks to an embarrassing loss to Longford - on the same June Saturday as Donegal were being humbled by Armagh in Crossmaglen. Listening to Horan is a throwback to the Jim McGuinness’ ‘everything stays the same’ mantra. “The excitement in Donegal might be a bit different to the excitement in Mayo, but we’ll be okay,” Horan said. “We’ll do what we have done all year - we’ll go to training, we’ll try to
improve and we’ll do exactly what we have been doing. “We won’t change a thing. We will train at our normal times in the normal places and we’ll just get on with it. That has been our approach all year and we won’t change it now.” The connections between Donegal and Mayo are endless. Indeed, three of the Donegal players are sons of Mayo fathers - captain Michael Murphy, goalkeeper Paul Durcan, and energetic attacker Martin O’Reilly.

COME ON DONEGAL! GAA ALL IRELAND SENIOR FINAL DONEGAL -v- MAYO SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2012 Colm McFadden was awarded with the Ulster GAA Player of the Year.
Sharp-shooter honoured with top award
McFadden picks up player of the year COLM McFadden has been named the Ulster GAA Player of the Year for 2012. The Donegal sharp-shooter picked up the award on a night of Donegal dominance at the awards night at the Armagh City Hotel. McFadden has been in scintillating form for Donegal this year - and the 2-17 scored with that lethal left boot in Ulster was recognised on Thursday night. St Michael’s man McFadden has led the line magnificently all summer, scoring 1-6 in a preliminary round win over Cavan in Breffni Park back in May, which set the tone for a remarkable campaign. Eleven Donegal players were named on the Ulster All-Star team of the year, but it was McFadden’s scoring that saw him take the top prize, which was last year won by Karl Lacey. McFadden beat off stiff competition from several of his peers to land the award, with Lacey, Mark McHugh, Ryan Bradley and particularly Frank McGlynn having strong claims for being in contention. With the All-
Ireland final looming, the Donegal contingent arrived at the function a little late, but they were excused and Jim McGuinness and the players entered the room to an ovation from the capacity attendance. Player of the Year McFadden told former Armagh goalkeeper Benny Tierney, who interviewed the various award winners, that it’s been the best campaign he’s had in the green and gold. “I’m happy with my game, but I know I have to keep working hard at it,” said McFadden. “Jim has come in and got us believing in ourselves again. We have had a lot of hard work, but we’re getting the rewards out of it and it’s great to be looking forward to an All-Ireland final. “Hopefully we can get over the line in the final now.”
Gripping Stuff!
Eleven Donegal players made it a record for any county in any one year. Paul Durcan was named in goals, with defenders Paddy McGrath, Neil McGee and the entire half-back line of Karl Lacey, Frank McGlynn and Anthony Thompson. Ryan Bradley, Rory Kavanagh, Michael Murphy and Mark McHugh all joined McFadden on the team. Karl Lacey was collecting his fourth Ulster All-Star, eclipsing Brendan Devenney’s previous Donegal record of three. Special guest on the night was GAA President Liam O’Neill, the MC was RTE presenter Joanne Cantwell, while Billy Walsh, the Director of High Performance with the Irish Boxing team, was the guest speaker. There were seminal echoes of Jim McGuinness as Walsh delivered a

message to the Donegal team. “It is all in the performance boys,” Walsh told them. “I won’t stand here and say that you will win the All-Ireland, because I can’t do that. “What I can say is to focus on the performance and be the best you can. Don’t leave anything out there, give it everything and if you focus on the performance and get it, then you’ll be in with a chance.” Down pair Dan Gordan and Conor Laverty, as well as Armagh’s Jamie Clarke and Tyrone’s Joe McMahon were the non-Donegal players named on the team of the year. GAA President Liam O’Neill said that Donegal had helped contribute to one of the most exciting championships in years. He said: “This has been a fantastic year
for Gaelic Games. We have had the best hurling years and we have one of the most exciting finals. “It’s been a fantastic year for football too and it has been one of the most exciting. We are delighted with the crowds and delighted to see that they’re up so much. “I was delighted to be present at the Ulster final. I said after that day that the standard of play and the attacking football on show was just a privilege to watch. It has been a privilege to watch since. “The semi-final was a clash between a team trying to develop a new style and the biggest Gaelic football team ever, in Cork. It is fantastic that we have two teams in the final who haven’t been blessed with success.”

BIG MATCH PREVIEW
Clean bill of health for bookies favourites Donegal DONEGAL go into their first All-Ireland final in 20 years, and only their second ever, with a clean bill of health, while Mayo manager James Horan expects all of his walking wounded, with the exception of crocked captain Andy Moran, to be fit for the big day. Donegal are in search of the Sam Maguire 20 years after Anthony Molloy’s immortal words ‘Sam’s for the Hills’ were uttered in the Hogan Stand. Donegal are the bookies favourites to win on Sunday - and with good reason. In Karl Lacey, they have a man who is perhaps the greatest Donegal player ever. The classy Four Masters defender has eclipsed all before him with the level of consistency he’s shown. Around him is a group of the most focussed and fittest players Donegal has ever seen. At just 23 Michael Murphy could be one of the youngest captains in an All-Ireland final on Sunday - but the totemic Glenswilly man will rise to the occasion as all the great players do. Colm McFadden’s scoring form has been wondrous all year and in the likes of Patrick McBrearty and Mark McHugh, Donegal have some of the on-form players of the year. Their defence, too, is one of the meanest around - with just three goals conceded in the Championship to date. Few teams can breach the Donegal barrier and Mayo will have to have the game of their lives if they’re to do it. “I don’t believe that our fellas will be apprehensive or nervous,” said McGuinness. “Their focus has always been on tasked goals and when they work that way they all perform. There is a synergy in the team and they all know what we’re working on.

“I don’t believe that our fellas will be apprehensive or nervous. Their focus has always been on tasked goals and when they work that way they all perform. There is a synergy in the team and they all know what we’re working on.” Neil Gallagher and Rory Kavanagh will continue their partnership at midfield, which will be a key factor in the game. Gallagher was Man of the Match against Cork in the semifinal and will be looked to for another top display, while Eamon McGee will make his 100th Donegal appearance in the final Mayo, meanwhile, have had concerns over the fitness of Lee Keegan, Richie Feeney but manager James Horan says that he believes all three will be in the frame to face Donegal on Sunday-week. Keegan dislocated a finger during their semi-final win over Dublin and hasn’t done any contract training since, though Horan suggested this week that he is ‘on track’ for a return in the coming days, while Feeney is also said to be ‘progressing very well’ in his rehab on a calf injury. Boyle, meanwhile, has sat out training this week as a result of a virus that prevented him from starting the win over Dublin. “He was training with us last night so he’s on track,” Horan said of the wing-back. “We have a couple of guys still on rehab programmes, but they’re coming on very well. “I am very confident that they’ll be up to speed
Donegal hero Karl Lacey should have a huge impact in Sunday’s final.
and raring to go in the next few days.” Some of the country’s top managers haven’t been able to steer their teams over the line against Donegal, but Horan - who is, like McGuinness, in his second year in the job believes that Mayo can crack the puzzle. “We are very good problem solvers,” the Ballintubber man told The Donegal News. “We have played a number of good teams this year. We played Sligo, who are very different to Dublin, who are very different to Donegal. In each of those games, we adapted and
tweaked for the previous games and we came through them all. If we can do our stuff well we’ll be ok. “Donegal do a number of things well. They’re a fit team - but so are we. We’re a young, hungry team and we feel that, if we do our stuff well, that we’ll be competitive against anyone. “We’re looking forward to the challenge.” But the signs all point to a Donegal win - and it’ll take something special for Mayo to reroute the odds. Verdict: Donegal to win.

Laois man to take charge of final
Occasion won’t faze the lads JIM McGuinness believes that his Donegal team won’t let the occasion of the All-Ireland final faze them. McGuinness has consistently said that the final is just like any other - and ahead of the September 23rd showdown, the Donegal manager is keeping his own cool, and says the team will do the same. 5,000 fans turned out for an open training session and a meet-and-greet day in MacCumhaill Park last Saturday. Neil Gallagher took a full part in the session while Karl Lacey - who trained for most of it away from the large group - is expected back in full training this week. The Donegal squad and management headed away on Wednesday for a fiveday training camp that takes them up to the week leading into the game. With no additional injury worries, things are starting to take shape now. After the Ulster final, rampaging defender Frank McGlynn mentioned that the All-Ireland series was a separate ‘three game Championship’ - and that steely focus, McGuinness says,
Donegal are ready for the big stage (Croke Park).
will remain with his players. “I don’t believe that our fellas will be apprehensive or nervous,” the big Glenties man said. “Their focus has always been on tasked goals and when they work that way they all perform. “There is a synergy in the team and they all know what we’re working on. “Where you’d get nervous would be if you removed yourself from that and you just put yourself mentally in a situation where you thought, ‘this is the All-Ireland final, I’ve never played in a final before, I’d love an All-Ireland medal, the homecoming is going to be great!’ “These are all things that mean nothing, but if you hadn’t got the things we have to focus us in training and on the field of play, those other things could come into play.
LAOIS native Maurice Deegan has been confirmed as the referee for the All-Ireland final.
“All the boys are worried about or thinking about is what we are coaching them. For that reason, I have good faith that they’ll stick to the tried and tested. “We have done that for two years and they have stuck by it in every game. I don’t see us changing in the final. “Donegal have played in three finals under McGuinness and won all three: the National League Division 2 final of 2011; the Ulster final of 2011; and this year’s Ulster final. McGuinness said: “I don’t think we went into them distinguishing them from any other game. “There is a job to be done and if we do the job we’ll be in a good position to be competitive. “Okay, there are bits and pieces that aren’t normal to the game, but it is a massive chance for them - hopefully they can grab it with both hands.”
It will be the second time that the Stradbally clubman will take charge of the final. In his last final, an Ulster team was victorious - in 2008 when he took charge of Tyrone’s final win over Kerry. Deegan has taken charge of Mayo in two big games this year already. In May, he was in the middle as the Connacht side lost to Cork in the Allianz National Football League Division 1 final, while he was also the referee for Mayo’s All-Ireland quarter-final win over Down on August 4th. Deegan’s appointment was widely expected and he has already refereed five championship games this summer. He oversaw Roscommon’s qualifier win over Armagh, Kerry’s qualifier win over Clare, that Mayo win over Down as well as a Connacht championship clash between Galway and Sligo and

the Ulster meeting of Monaghan and Antrim inb Clones. Meath’s David Coldrick will be the standby referee. The other linesman is Eddie Kinsella (Laois), while the side line official will be Conor Lane (Cork). His umpires on the day will be Kevin O’Brien (St Josephs, Laois), Sean Langton (St Josephs, Laois), Alan Abbey (Stradbally, Laois) and Richard Oxley (Timahoe, Laois). Barry Cassidy of Wolfe Tones, Bellaghy in Derry will take charge of the minor final that sees Dublin square up with Kerry.

Mayo’s key men back in full training
Horan expects squad to recover from injuries With just a couple of days to go until the All Ireland final throw in at Croke Park on Sunday, the excitement around Mayo county is at fever pitch.
Mayo boss James Horan has just a few possible injury niggles in his squad.
On Wednesday evening Mayo held their press night ahead of the final and James Horan was in confident mood that he will
grammes at the moment and are progressing very well and I’d be very confident in the next couple of days they’ll be raring to go.” Davitts’ wing-back Colm Boyle who was forced to miss the Dublin game with an illness is back with the squad and over his illness according to Horan. “Colm Boyle is progressMayo’s Colm Boyle ing very well he was training with us last should feature. night, so he’s on track. Colm was a bit sick, got some medical attention from the medical team, but he’s back up and running now.” have a fully fit squad come Sunday. When asked about those who were injured Boyle’s fellow half back Lee Keegan is back in the semi-final and their outlook, he said: running but not in full training, but Horan is “We’ve a couple of guys still on rehab pro- confident that he’ll be ready to go on Sunday.
“Lee’s finger still a bit sore, but he’s back running at full tilt, it’s just a matter of days before he’s completely (fit), but Lee is on track. It was a dislocation and the bone came through the finger, it was a sore event. But no bother to Lee.” The number of subs and blood subs that Mayo used against Dublin came up and when asked was it a rule he thought should be looked at, the Ballintubber club man said it was one of many. “Every rule in GAA could be looked at, I’d like the tackle to be looked at first and get that defined and we can work from there. But of course everything should
be reviewed on an ongoing basis. But the rules are the rules and that’s the way they are.” Going back to the number of subs used, Horan was sure about what he would have preferred to have happened. “I’d certainly have liked to have left the three players that were injured on, that would have been my first preference. But it worked out OK for us. We were extremely confident, we were lucky to have a county board member who sits with us on the sideline, he knew the rules inside out and he knew exactly where things were so we were lucky to have Kevin O’Toole with us there.” This evening will see an open training session for supporters to attended with a meet and greet beforehand with the players. But apart from that there will be no change from the normal training plan for Mayo according to Horan. “As I said after the semi-final we’ll do our normal stuff and prepare as well as we can and that’s what we’ll do. We’re happy with the way things are and were looking forward to the challenge.” As for the build-up by supporters ahead of the game this Sunday, Horan reckons that supporters have learned from the past in not getting too excited about it yet. “The Mayo public has the benefit of previous All Ireland finals so I think they are very clued in to preparing for a big match from a supporters point of view, there is a lot of composure and calm around the county, so that’s good.”

HOW THEY GOT THERE... ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIP PRELIMINARY ROUND DONEGAL 1-16 CAVAN 1-10 Donegal safely coasted into the quarter-finals as Cavan suffered a touch of stage fright at Kingspan Breffni Park. Colm McFadden hit 1-6 for the victors, who were never in any serious danger. Inexperienced Cavan started well and were 0-4 to 0-3 ahead at one stage –but they were waving the white flag in surrender before long.
McFadden netted a penalty in the 32nd minute to give Donegal a kick – and while Cavan netted from a penalty of their own, converted by sub Niall McDermott, Terry Hyland’s side couldn’t get close enough. Donegal were defensive at times, but they were given a licence to attack too – as shown by the scores of Frank McGlynn and Neil McGee in the second-half. Jim McGuinness deployed a side that was very much along expected lines, though Leo McLoone

was stationed on the edge of the square in one surprise move. Aside from a brief period early on, Donegal were on top for the most part. Playing in his 100th Donegal game, Rory Kavanagh captained the team and the St Eunan’s man scored three points on an industrious afternoon. Beside him, big Neil Gallagher continued his fine form in a Donegal shirt with a top class display that rightly earned him a rapturous ovation from the Donegal support when he made way for Dermot Molloy late in the day. Initial fizz from Cavan was soon settled as Donegal levelled through a McFadden (free) and a clinical point from Mark McHugh as he was falling. Cavan led again when Keating squeezed over after Robert Maloney-Derham intercepted a loose pass by Ryan Bradley.

minutes before throw-in. Colm McFadden and Mark Lynch traded early scores but Donegal were soon dictating. They were 0-5 to 0-2 ahead by the 27th minute and, after Paddy Bradley pulled Derry to within two, Tir Chonaill struck gold. Dangerman McFadden knifed his way through the Derry rearguard before cutting back to McLoone - who crashed home from close range. Donegal were five up - 1-6 to 0-4 - at the break and McGlynn came up to impressively stretch the margin early in the second period. 14 minutes into the new half, Donegal struck a second goal that showed just why their attack is beginning to make waves. Joe Diver was robbed of possession and Donegal hit at break-neck speed. McGlynn made the break for McLoone, who swapped roles with McFadden this time. From McLoone’s pass, McFadden was able to steer to the net in style. Murphy knocked over a free and Ryan Bradley became the ninth Donegal player to score. Patrick McBrearty, who only finished his leaving cert a little over 24 hours earlier, came close to grabbing a third Donegal goal - but his low shot came back off the post. At the other end Lynch broke in for a pop at goal, but Durcan kept his sheet clean with a magnificent save to his right-hand side. A stunning injury-time save from Paul Durcan saw Donegal edge a real tactical battle of managerial wits. For the second year in a row, Donegal have beaten Mickey Harte’s Red Hands at the penultimate provincial hurdle. With Donegal leading by three after an inspired period in the second-half, during which they kept Tyrone scoreless for 32 minutes, Tyrone went in search of a late slice of redemption against the 14 men of Tir Chonaill – who lost Colm McFadden to a second yellow card in the final minute of normal time. Martin Penrose was the man who had the headline writers primed. A tasty jink and dummy saw him get a sniff of goal. The Carrickmore forward drilled powerfully and looked to have sent Durcan the wrong way – only for the Four Masters man’s sharpness to once again come to the fore, his left leg thrown at the leather to divert it onto the goalframe. It was no more than Donegal deserved for their second-half endeavours to be fair. However, they were pinned to the collars for long periods in a game that saw both sides set up defensive structures which ensured for a fascinating contest. Tyrone had the plan worked out with a few long range points in a first-half that saw them take a slender 0-6 to 0-5 lead into the break – but Donegal hit back and firmly laid down their marker. Donegal were dealt an early blow with full-back Neil McGee forced off after just three minutes; a hamstring strain that had been troubling him taking its toll at a most early juncture. Rory Kavanagh had returned at the expense of Leo McLoone in the only change from the facile win over Derry, but McGee’s withdrawal shook them a little. A brilliant long-ranger from Mark McHugh, from all of 50 metres, had given Donegal the edge,
only for big Joe McMahon to level it up with a magnificent free from the same distance. Stephen O’Neill and Michael Murphy (free) swapped scores and it was pretty much tit-for-tat for the remainder of the first-half, with the sides level five times in the opening period. Mark Donnelly fisted Tyrone ahead, but Donegal responded through a well-taken Patrick McBrearty point. That was after Donegal survived a real scare: Durcan palming a slippery effort across goal by Joe McMahon, with a brave Paddy McGrath block thwarting the rebound of Mark Donnelly; and a second follow-up by McMahon deflecting wide. Tyrone secured a phycological edge as Penrose landed a beauty from 40 metres to give them the advantage. A two-point lead was opened for the first time when McMahon landed another longrange free. However, Donegal remained calm and Rory Kavanagh stole in for two stylish points and the teams were level again. From here, Donegal pressed the gas with McFadden and Bradley on target. Donegal survived a second goal scare when O’Neill got in behind Eamon McGee for a rare sight of goal, only to be denied by the bar.
Murphy curled over a free ten minutes from time and Donegal led by two again. McBrearty cut out a poor McConnell kick out before a mature off-load teed up Karl Lacey, who put three in it for the first time. In a game of inches, Donegal were now yards ahead. And a little breathing space was won when the imperious McFadden slid to pick up a low ball from McBrearty, sprang up around Conor Gormley and arched over the black spot. Then came the expected onslaught. McFadden saw red for a second yellow card and O’Neill and Gormley (‘45) ended the Tyrone famine. But it was Durcan’s left leg that Donegal had to thank for recording a win that could become a landmark win.
Donegal: Paul Durcan; Paddy McGrath, Neil McGee, Frank McGlynn; Eamon McGee, Karl Lacey (0-1), Anthony Thompson; Ryan Bradley (0-1), Neil Gallagher; David Walsh, Rory Kavanagh (0-2), Mark McHugh (0-1); Patrick McBrearty (0-1), Michael Murphy (0-3, 3f), Colm McFadden (0-3, 1f). Subs: Declan Walsh for N.McGee (3 mins); Martin McElhinney for Gallagher (54 mins); Martin O’Reilly for David Walsh (54 mins); Leo McLoone for Bradley (69 mins); Christy Toye for McBrearty (73 mins).
ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL DONEGAL 2-18 DOWN 0-13
Donegal retained the Anglo-Celt thanks to a blistering second-half performance that blew Down away. Tir Chonaill had eleven points to spare at the end and were full value for a landslide win after taking total control of the contest in part two. Leo McLoone and Frank McGlynn were the goalscorers on a day that took Donegal’s threat to a new level entirely. Michael Murphy and Patrick McBrearty scored just one point apiece, as if to serve how competent most of their team-mates now are with scoring chances. Eleven different Donegal players registered as Tir Chonaill savoured a back-to-back feeling for the first time in history on the seventh occasion of their winning of the provincial crown. The margin of victory seemed unlikely after a cagey first-half that had Donegal ahead by one thanks to a 31st minute Leo McLoone goal and a spurt of late points, including a late brace by Declan Walsh that was key. It was a day to be savoured in Donegal as the win
was secured long before the conclusion. With four minutes to go in the first-half, Donegal’s hopes received the perfect tonic. Bradley fetched a superb ball just beyond the ’45 and, having been fouled, the Buncrana man quickly fed Leo McLoone. In space, McLoone zipped in and applied a killer finish, tucking home under Brendan McVeigh to the bottom corner. Donegal finished the better in the first-half with the Walshes, Declan and David, helping to give them the edge by the time Joe McQuillan called a halt to an opening period in which he dished out six yellow cards. David Walsh scored in between a brace of points by his namesake Declan, whose ransacking surges upfield typified Donegal’s seamless transitions between defence and attack. The Malin man might well have shot for goal when the chance presented, but the smart option was chosen and he slotted over a timely brace. Donegal led by one at the break and still a certain nervousness lingered in the air. McGlynn was really getting into his groove and he laid on a score for McElhinney before cutting through for the game’s decisive score. Murphy made the play, putting McGlynn through on goal. The Glenfin man tucked home his first Donegal goal – and the party started. McFadden swung a pair of majestic points from the right flank and it was Donegal who played with a swagger once made famous by the Mourne County in James McCartan’s playing days. McLaughlin and McElhinney stretched the lead further, but at the back Donegal never lost the focus – and Paul Durcan stepped up with another superb late save. Durcan got down low to turn Danny Hughes’ effort round the post. Unlike his save to deny Martin Penrose against Tyrone, this time the end result wasn’t in doubt. But the sheet was kept clean once again by Durcan. McFadden added his fifth with a free and the cheery was placed atop the cake by the St Michael’s man, who arched over a neat effort, this time with a rare point off his right boot. It was that sort of day. Donegal: Paul Durcan; Paddy McGrath, Neil McGee, Frank McGlynn (1-0); Declan Walsh (0-2), Karl Lacey, Anthony Thompson; Ryan Bradley (0-2), Rory Kavanagh; David Walsh (0-1), Leo McLoone (1-0), Mark McHugh (0-2); Patrick McBrearty (0-1), Michael Murphy (0-1), Colm McFadden (0-6, 3f). Subs: Martin McElhinney (0-2) for David Walsh (half-time); Christy Toye for McLoone (44 mins); Daniel McLaughlin (0-1) for Bradley (58 mins).

HOW THEY GOT THERE... ALL-IRELAND QUARTER-FINAL DONEGAL 1-12 KERRY 1-10
Donegal scored a nerve-racking win over Kerry in Sunday’s quarter-final at Croke Park. The aristocrats of Gaelic football were toppled by Jim McGuinness’s gutsy charges, who scored a memorable 1-12 to 1-10 win that has rekindled lofty dreams of September glory in Tir Chonaill. A mesmeric 1-5 from Colm McFadden was the stand-out tally for Donegal. His seventh-minute goal might have had a touch of fortune about, it but the Creeslough man has made his own luck – as have Donegal who staved off a strong fightback from Kerry. The Kingdom staged a stirring comeback, awoken by a trademark goal from Kieran Donaghy four minutes from the end. Donaghy had been well marshalled by Eamon McGee all afternoon – but the towering inferno from Austin Stacks goaled four minutes from time. Kerry reeled Donegal in to the minimum – but Karl Lacey had the final say, as he scorched over after a superb piece of ball winning from Rory Kavanagh. Kerry launched it one last time, but when Lacey emerged with the O’Neills the game was up for Jack O’Connor and Kerry – but Donegal’s dreams were only beginning.

Donegal landed a dream start when they scored a freak sixth-minute goal. There seemed little danger for Kerry when Donegal were awarded a line ball in the Cusack Stand’s shadows. Colm McFadden’s quick thinking saw him deliver an arrow in on top of ‘keeper Brendan Kealy. With Michael Murphy for company, the ball flew past both Murphy and the uneasy Kerry custodian. When Murphy beautifully let sail between the Hill 16 posts sixty seconds later, it opened up a fourpoint lead. Kerry closed the margin with Declan O’Sullivan and Bryan Sheehan (free) on the mark. Donaghy and O’Sullivan miscued with chances and it was Donegal who led by two at the break. Donegal added just two further points – McFadden slotting over in the 23rd minute after a brilliant rob by Leo McLoone won possession for the galloping Lacey to carry, with the St Michael’s ace nailing a 45-metre free in stoppage time. A purple patch between the 53rd and 63rd minutes that yielded four points – two from McFadden and one each from Toye and McBrearty – was the game’s defining period. From there, Donegal had enough of a cushion to stave off Kerry’s comeback. The nerves bubbled when Donaghy batted home with four minutes remaining. Stomachs trembled even louder when Cooper hit a free and midfielder Anthony Maher landed a monster point. One between them and Donegal needed something fast. Rory Kavanagh emerged from a glut of bodies with the most crucial possession Donegal football has seen. Onto his right he handed it to triple All-Star Karl Lacey. The Four Masters man strode forward and took the smart option, sweetly striking over an iconic point that sealed a famous win. ALL-IRELAND SEMI-FINAL DONEGAL 0-16 CORK 1-11
Donegal booked their place back in an All-Ireland final after a superb second-half display saw them dismantle Sam Maguire favourites Cork in an enthralling semi-final at Croke Park a few short weeks ago. Just two points was in it at the end, but despite the 0-16 to 1-11 scoreline, Donegal were comfortable winners. Colm O’Neill netted a late goal for Cork, but devastating Donegal was already looking forward to the September 23 final. It was one of the finest-ever, if not the best ever displays by a Donegal team - and around 40,000 fantastic fans from the county were in fine voice all evening. In devastating fashion, sublime Donegal delivered a stunning performance to inflict a twopoint hammering on Cork. That paradox was borne out after Colm O’Neill netted a late goal for Cork, rolling home under Paul Durcan in stoppage time. But by that stage, it was merely just a change in a statistic. For O’Neill’s goal brought respectability to the score-

board for Cork - who were well and truly beaten by a Donegal team that has again defied logic by writing its own. Cork did everything they could, but couldn’t force Donegal out. That Donegal could and should have been even further ahead must also be noted. The second-half was littered with wides as Donegal stormed Conor Counihan’s boys. The teams had been level seven times in a frantic and fascinating first-half. Donegal lined out as selected with Neil Gallagher returning to the starting line-up in some fashion - the Glenswilly man was excellent and his ball winning gave Donegal a real platform. Kerrigan and McFadden swapped efforts from the ‘45. A glut of chances to put the dagger in fell by the wayside, but when Martin McElhinney knocked over three minute from the end it rendered O’Neill’s late goal as little more than a footnote. Martin McHugh said it was Donegal’s best ever display. It was hard to argue with Neil Gallagher phenomenal; Mark McHugh outstanding and countless others standing tall. Donegal: Paul Durcan; Paddy McGrath, Neil McGee, Frank McGlynn (0-1); Éamon McGee, Karl Lacey (0-2), Anthony Thompson (0-1); Neil Gallagher, Rory Kavanagh (0-1); Ryan Bradley, Leo McLoone, Mark McHugh (0-1); Patrick McBrearty, Michael Murphy (0-3, 3f), Colm McFadden (0-5, 2f, 1 ‘45). Tyrone mum’s amazing weight loss journey

I’m a happy confident size 10! Mum-of-three Claire Moore, 30, from Co Tyrone, was shocked into losing 9st after having two mini-strokes at the age of just 26. She battled health issues and crippling embarrassment about her size. Now, 9st lighter, Claire’s looking forward to a festive season complete with size 10 dresses! Claire shares her transformation here… “I’d been overweight since I was 16 and my health suffered right from the age of 17. I had dangerously high blood pressure, and suffered two TIA (transient ischemic attack) strokes before I was 24. “My sisters were all slimmer than me. When people looked at photos of us they’d say how well the others looked and how I had a ‘nice face’. It hurt so much. “When I married and had kids the weight piled on. My husband Michael always reassured me that he loved me but I felt so uncomfortable and insecure. My weight put me in a really dark place – I never wanted to go out and I cut myself off from my family and friends. I hated what I’d become. “I’d often talk about losing weight, but the final straw came at the annual football club dinner dance. I felt so uncomfortable, embarrassed and out of place – I’d had to resort to something frumpy. I knew that I had to make changes and made a vow to myself that I’d wear a slim-fitting dress the next year. I heard a friend raving about Slimming World but I was terrified about joining – scared that the scales wouldn’t be able to read my weight. When I eventually joined, my Consultant made me feel at ease straightaway, and I lost 11½lbs in my first week! I hadn’t stopped eating but now I was snacking up on raspberries and fat free yoghurts. The support from both my consultant and my fellow members is second to none.Spurred on,I kept up my good work.Within two months,Id lost 2 Stones. “I found Image Therapy so beneficial - hearing about other people’s journeys, getting advice and giving support really Claire before Page 4 January 2012 The Herald encoraged me”.
“Unfortunately, eight weeks into my slimming journey my Claire today husband became very ill. He spent seven months in hospital and during that time I found it so hard not to turn to comfort eating but the group supported me and I kept on Food Optimising. “I took up walking – and I walk 3½ miles every day now, sometimes more – it makes me feel great and helped me achieve what was only a dream. “There are so many things that I can do now that I couldn’t before – I’m a happier mum, wife, sister and friend. I love going out now and don’t make excuses anymore. I feel so much better about myself and I can now dress to suit my age, not my size. “I feel confident about maintaining my weight loss. I can’t go back to the dark, unhappy and unhealthy place I was. I will continue to Food Optimise – it’s my new way of life! “I can’t fully explain how Slimming World has changed my life. I’m now a healthy, confident size 10 who enjoys life to its full.My 3 boys call me their yummy mummy, which makes me smile. But what makes me happiest is knowing I’ll be their mummy for a lot longer, now that I’ve shed the unhealthy pounds that threatened to take me away from them” For more information or to join Slimming World call Sinead,SionMills group on 07835 439 707 or Kellie, the Strabane Cricket Club on 07852 302 534 or Patricia, the Castlederg group on 0770 6016 879 or visit www.slimmingworld. com. Culture Night takes place on Friday 21st September and is for everyone so come along and enjoy a wonderful night of free entertainment. The Wireless Room
A fabulous evening of live radio drama and soulful blues will take place at the Alley Theatre on the 28th September 2012 at 8pm. On April 14th 1912, hundreds of wireless radio communications filled the air over the mid-Atlantic. Were it not for Marconi’s wireless telegraph system and the bravery of the wireless operators, there may have been no survivors to tell the tale of the Titanic, the most famous sinking in history. In this exciting new piece of theatre, on the 100th anniversary of the sinking, WMT – On the Air presents the radio signals that went out on that fateful night: from Titanic herself; from neighbouring ships; from land-bases and newspapers. Using ships’ logs and the reports of the one surviving wireless man, Harold Bride, the play weaves wireless messages with live piano quintet and hand generated live sound effects to recreate the sound of the night to remember. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Tickets are £5 Calling all Mums 2 Be

EP Launch from Strabane’s rising star Cool new material from local hip-hop master Gerard i2 performing live at the Tennent’s Vital festival.
Fresh from performing to the biggest crowd of his life at Northern Ireland’s biggest music festival, Tennent’s Vital, Strabane musician Gerard i2 is set to launch a new EP. By Kevin McAnena The CD of new material from the town’s fastest rising star will be debuted in Dicey Reilly’s bar on Saturday 29th September. The hip-hop artist’s last album release was almost a year ago in October 2011. Last month the former St Colman’s pupil (full name Gerard McDaid) performed at the T-Vital festival in Belfast, which saw around 60,000 people attend over two days. Gerard opened proceedings on Day Two, playing before megastars such as Florence & The Machine and the Stone Roses. “It was brilliant – the best day ever,” he said. “There was a good crowd up from Strabane as well, about 30 or 40 people. I didn’t expect that many to come up to it, considering the ticket price.” He says the exposure the gig has given him is starting to open doors: “Before when I asked people about booking gigs or whatever they said no, but now when I say I’m just after playing Tennents Vital they’ll say “Okay we can sort something out”, so it’s helped a lot. Before, I couldn’t get a gig in Derry but now I’ve got a gig coming up in Sandinos. It’s been good, and I needed the help because before people weren’t taking it serious.” The 25-year-old was one of two acts chosen to play at the festival from around 250 artists who
entered a competition earlier this year. After his demo made the top 16 he had to perform a gig in Belfast, and was eventually picked for the festival along with Trucker Diablo. The good news is continuing for Gerard – who cites Mos Def, Dizzee Rascal and
A Tribe Called Quest as influences. He has another gig in The Limelight in Belfast coming up next month, but not before an Arthur’s Day gig in Derry . To find out more, find Gerard i2 on Facebook.

A special, intimate, warm and uplifting evening with one of the giants of Irish folk rock. For over 3 decades Scullion – Sonny Condell, Robbie Overson and Philip King – have remained true to their eclectic musical roots. Nourished by tradition but not beholden to it they translate and deconstruct, delivering an individual musical experience for capacity audiences wherever they choose to perform. Now Scullion have recorded a new collection of songs – their first album in over 20 years. To celebrate they embark on their most extensive Irish tour for many years. Featuring new music in addition to a journey through the bands back pages this gig is a rare opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the unique Scullion sound. This fantastic Double Bill is completed by The Henry Girls - the three McLaughlin sisters from Malin - who have spent most of this year touring and performing in Ireland, Germany, the US and, most recently, the UK. Their current CD, December Moon, showcases their inimitable blend of stunning vocal harmonies with traditional Irish, Scottish, jazz and oldtime American music. Sat Oct 20th Declan Sinnott
Nearly everywhere you look in the development of Irish folk music in the last forty years you’ll find the hand of Declan Sinnott. He was a founding member of both Horslips and Moving Hearts, spent 13 years guiding the career of Mary Black and played guitar for folk luminaries including Mary Black, Sinead Lohan, John Spillane and the great Christy Moore. Remarkably, at the age of 61, the release of ‘I Love The Sound It Makes’ this September marks his debut solo album. After a lifetime of shaping, nurturing and influencing the music of others the opportunity to see and hear a legend reveal his own personal sound is to be savoured. Fri Sep 28th Company D present Oleanna by David Mamet Allow yourself be taken on a thrilling, stormy journey – an epic power struggle that allows the audience to decide who is right and who is wrong. In this controversial play, as in life, things are rarely black and white. You the audience must decide whether Carol is simply a bitter student, struggling at university, using her age and gender to destroy the professor who she believes has failed her. Or has John, a university professor on the verge of being granted tenure, let his position go to his head and abused his power to pass and fail? Oleanna by celebrated American playwright David Mamet (Glengarry, Glen Ross) is a gripping psychological thriller exploring the issues of sexual harassment, gender and stereotypes. How are our words and actions actually perceived? Is what we said really what we meant? Was that really what we heard? Oleanna

Join Della Dolan (Mary McEvoy) as she teaches us about life, love and how to make a perfect fruitcake. Della Dolan has learned many things in life from her Nana Casey. But not everything is as easy as baking. As Della demonstrates how to bake the perfect fruitcake she gets sidetracked. Memories return providing a fascinating account of her chequered upbringing on a farm in rural Ireland. The result is a wonderful story – an emotional rollercoaster that reinforces the gift of life for all its surprises. Mary McEvoy is outstanding in this one woman show which never fails to have audiences laughing, crying and raving about it afterwards.
This is the captivating true story of Palestinian peace activist Bassam Aramin. From the age of 15, Bassam spent 7 years in an Israeli prison for an assault on Israeli soldiers. Upon his release he turned his back on violence and co-founded the Israeli-Palestine peace movement Combatants for Peace (CFP). Two years later his daughter was murdered – a shot to the head with a rubber bullet. If you were in his shoes what would you do? Written by former Israeli soldier Idan Meir who himself spent 5 years in the military, Bassam is about one man’s fascinating journey from violence to non-violence which asks us all “What motivates people to say no to violence and choose the road to peace?

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle has welcomed confirmation from Assembly Health Minister Edwin Poots that the construction of the planned radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin remains on target to commence next year. The local MLA, who received the confirmation in response to a written question she submitted to the Minister on the issue, said: “I asked the Minister to provide reassurance that there would be no slippage in the timeframe for the construction of the Radiotherapy Unit given just how absolutely vital this service is. “I therefore welcome the reassurance he has provided in confirming that construction remains on target to commence in 2013, with a view to the unit being operational by 2016 and adding that officials {north and south} are working together to finalise arrangements that will ensure the effective delivery of the project to serve the needs of all the people of this north west part of Ireland.

Open Mic night at the Alley Theatre Throughout July and August the Alley Cafe ran 7 consecutive Open Mic Nights organised and compered by local singer/songwriter Nicky McCallan. These shows were specifically designed to showcase the best up and coming talent from the north west and further afield. The Open Mic Nights were exactly that and featured singer/songwriters, comedians, poets, magicians, instrumentalists and performers covering many genres and styles of music. These nights were a fantastic success due not only to the quality of the performers but to the generous support offered by the audiences in attendance each week. The Alley Open Mic nights were unique in that people of all ages were welcome to perform in a family friendly environment with no added pressure of having to please the ‘drunken punter’ ever present in typical clubs and pubs. Following the success of the run of shows the Alley are pleased to be featuring some of the acts from the Open Mic on Friday 21st September in the Alley Cafe which is sure to be another night not to be missed. Tickets are available from the Alley box office or pay at the door.@ 8.00pm Glenn Harkin sang two original songs

Council Chairman heralds Strabane District’s Paralympic Flame Celebration a “success” Following a successful Paralympic flame celebration on last month in Strabane, Strabane District Council’s Chairman Councillor Thomas Kerrigan has thanked everyone for attending and getting involved in the celebrations. “It was a fantastic family day out and a fitting local tribute to the start of the London 2012 Paralympic games. The sun was shining on Strabane and so many children were smiling and having fun.” “I would like to thank everyone who got involved in the event, the flame ambassadors, the children who took part in the procession, the traders, the sponsors of the event, those involved in the many activities in Strabane town centre and in Melvin Sports
Complex. I am so pleased that we gave the Paralympic flame a warm local welcome. It really was a successful day which helped showcase our vibrant market town as a warm and welcoming place to come to shop, relax and have fun.” If you would like to see the photos taken at the Paralympic Flame Celebration please log onto Strabane District Council’s facebook page on http://www.facebook.com/StrabaneDistrictCouncil and tag your family and friends.

DONEGAL CLUB CLAIM THEIR FIRST NATIONAL TITLE IN THEIR 117 YEAR HISTORY
Rosapena clinch the All Ireland Mixed Foursomes title! Rosapenna claimed the first national title in the club’s 117-year history with a dramatic victory over Dromoland Golf Club in the Spanish Tourist Board sponsored All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes at Clontarf Golf Club a few weeks ago on Friday the 7th of September after claiming the Ulster title against Mannan Castle just one week previous. The decisive blow came at the 21st in the first match, where Con Boyce and Suzanne Gallagher scored a winning par four to a bogey five by Mark Reynolds and Maria Nolan to seal a 3.5-1.5 victory over the Co. Clare side. The foundation of Rosapenna’s victory in the final was laid in the final two matches, where Enda Kennedy and Dympna Kelly beat Nicholas Duggan and Angela White by 3 & 2 before Marty McDermott & Orla Lenny beat Mark Hogan and Yvonne Shanahan 4 & 3. Dromoland scored a win of their own when Tony Cleary and Dorothea Madden beat Pat and Kit Boyce by 2 & 1 in the second match out, leaving the title to hinging on the result of the other two matches. The other two matches, however, saw nothing between the sides and both finished all square after 18 holes. Boyce and Gallagher for Rosapenna eventually came out on top on the 21st while the other game between Rosapenna’s Frank Casey Jnr and Terri McBride and Dromoland’s Declan O’Leary and Mary Arthur were still all square on the 19th hole and looking like going down the 20th before being called in to join the joyous celebrations in front of the Clontarf clubhouse as Rosapenna had clinched their first All Ireland title.

Team captain Smyth added: “It’s history because it’s our first time to win an Ulster title and our first time to win an All Ireland title. www.golffocus.net Hi Folks, and welcome back, today I want to give you some idea of what I coach players in, and a short example of the style of coaching I use with players. There is no doubt modern day coaching is a mixture of good technical understanding and mechanics but, perhaps more importantly, how we learn skills and then how we can take those skills from a practice environment to a high pressure performance situation. The art and science of skill aquisition, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, hypnosis, NLP and life coaching are all integral to the tools and techniques contained within the MIND FACTOR but have been distilled into a workable and practical model for you to begin to utilise immediately. I feel the MIND FACTOR coaching programme I achieved, working alongside Karl Morris, coach to GMac, Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, is about practicality in the sense it is no good spending years in academic study if you cannot then sit down with a client and give them a way forward to improve as a player. Great coaching is about understanding how a player has to be able to integrate sound mechanics and biomechanical principles with a mindset which then sets the body free to be able to play in any environment. It is truly rewarding to work with a client who manages to incorporate these principles and you see them develop and flourish as a player, to become what they are truly capable of being. I have been extremely fortunate to work with and listen to some great players over the past few years. For example, European tour players, Irish international amateurs, golfers at all levels. All

have given me a unique opportunity to observe the very best and to discuss with them what does and does not work at the very highest level. The MIND FACTOR coaching model I use when coaching players is about applying knowledge and taking action to make a difference. No action means no change. To be able to work with the MIND FACTOR effectively you need a structure, a model of how to be able to implement the tools and techniques with your clients, otherwise, you will just have an information minefield! The structure and model that has proven most effective over the years has been the four quadrants; 1. BEFORE Golf (Practice) 2. DURING Golf (Pre – Shot Routine) 3. The IN BETWEEN (Golf Shots) 4. AFTER (Golf game is over) I feel it has proven to be SIMPLE, APPLICABLE and above all, practical to apply over the years and I have found most players instantly see an area in which they need to work to improve their game.

Changing attitudes. Some time ago I was working with a young man whose ultimate goal was to stop drinking alcohol. Drinking heavily was ruining his life and family relationships were now at an all time low. Previously he was treated in a well known alcohol rehabilitation centre which worked for a short while however he was soon back to his old ways of abusing himself drinking alcohol. When he called me and made an appointment I knew that he really did not know what to expect. He informed me that he had been to several Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings however he felt that they were ‘not for him’ as it were, as he regularly felt worse about himself after leaving them.
Start believing that you are where you are in life because that is where you are supposed to be. Get out of the blame game scenario. Start taking responsibility for your actions and refuse to be bullied by anyone.
Take Control
Workshops & Seminars
If your issue happens to be a financial problem, take control of it and realise that many financial institutions depend on the ‘fear factor’ to make you pay. Remember that debt collection agencies have no lawful authority and may be in breach of the Data protection Act by acquiring your financial information in the first place, as you have no contract with them. Your contract, if indeed you had one at all, is with the original institution that you did business with.
Kindness
Attitude I asked him to change his attitude towards AA meetings in future. I suggested he keep going to meetings to give the people there the benefit of his experiences, whether they are positive or negative. I explained that human beings actually get more benefit in giving than receiving. Giving someone in AA rooms the benefit of his unique experiences could have really beneficial and healing effects on someone there, without him even knowing. The emphasis for this particular young man was that he was going to start going to meetings to GIVE rather than RECEIVE. By giving he received great benefits from subsequent meetings. It is amazing the benefits a change of attitude about everyday things can bring us.
...write your own story!
Always be courteous when dealing with another human being, however let them know that you refuse to be bullied as bullying tactics seem to be the avenue the once great and highly regarded institutions are pursuing. Remember, everyone has issues of some kind or other. You are not alone.

Sinn Féin welcomes installation safety warning signs at primary school Derg Sinn Féin Councillors Ruairí Mc Hugh and Kieran Mc Guire have welcomed the installation of ‘flashing light’ safety warning signs on the approach roads to Drumnabey Primary School. A joint statement from the local representatives said, “We have been lobbying Roads Service over a number of years over concerns about pedestrian safety for children attending Drumnabey Primary School. “While Roads Service previously undertook some remedial work in response to these concerns, we continued to press for the installation of the ‘flashing light’ safety warning signs on both approaches to the school given the particular hazards and dangers which exist. “We are therefore delighted that Roads Service has acceded to the request to prioritise Drumnabey as part of the “Safer Routes to School Programme” and the warning signs are now installed and operational.

Shamrocks aiming for provincial glory The hurlers of Strabane Shamrocks are gearing up for the familiar challenge of Donegal side MacCumhaills in the quarter final of the Ulster Junior Hurling Championship in just over a fortnight’s time. Preparations for a provincial assault have been ongoing since the 4-14 to 4-10 win over Naomh Colum Cille in the county final at the beginning of the month. Shamrocks had to overcome the odds in that game, and they will find themselves underdogs again against the Ballybofey side next time out.
Veteran full-forward Gary McGettigan, who was among the goal scorers in the county final, is no stranger to the challenge posed by MacCumhaills: “We’ve played them five or six times over the last couple of years and I don’t think we’ve ever beat them. So it’s hard to know, but we’ll give it a go anyway.” Indeed, the Donegal side beat Shamrocks at this same stage two years ago – but Strabane have made it to the Ulster final as recent as 2005 and 2006, with some of those players still on board this season. The prospect of the Ulster Club Championship certainly does much to boost morale, and Gary admits the team is looking for-
ward to representing Tyrone on the provincial stage: “It keeps the thing going. It’s hard to keep hurling going in Tyrone but success like this keeps the younger boys going and it keeps the players coming through. There’s a bit of a buzz about training these days and it’s a bit easier getting boys out. We’ve noticed the numbers in training have picked up.” The game is due to take place on Sunday 7th October in Healy Park, but with the Tyrone County Football Final due to be played in Omagh that day there’s a strong chance the venue could be changed. Strabane Ath F.C. Club Notes: N.I Intermediate League – Pharmacy Cup
SAFC Player Profile
Ardstraw 0 v 3 Strabane Athletic Strabane Athletics’ first team had a comfortable victory in a sun splattered Vaughan’s Holm, Newtownstewart against Ardstraw in the Pharmacy Cup last week. Athletic started the brightest and had the better of the opening exchanges. Fergal McGavigan was authoritative in midfield and aided by the industrious Brian Patterson they pushed their team forward at every opportunity. Young Aaron Patterson, making his debut for the 1st team, tested the ‘Straw keeper with a fierce shot that was pushed away to safety. This was followed by great chances for Gerard Donaghey and Brian Patterson but both went narrowly wide. In the 22nd minute the deadlock was broken. Conwell chased and gathered a high long clearance by Boyle, turned his marker and squared the ball across the 6 yard box; fortunately for McGavigan a suspect clearance broke to him on the edge of the box and he drilled a low shot past a number of bodies to opening the scoring. The next 15 minutes saw Ardstraw regroup but Strabane’s back 4 were well on top. Athletic doubled their lead on 37 minutes when Aaron Patterson’s fierce free kick was spilt by the keeper and as ever, Jason McGrinder was quickest to react and stab the ball over the line to make it 2 nil. Aaron Patterson was again causing major problems to the ‘Straw defence and placed another screamer of a free from near 30 yards inches wide. His pace, skill, determination and ferocious shot was the highlight of the first half with his team well on top. Athletic took up were they left off in the first half and controlled proceedings from the start of the second period. The game was all but over as a contest in the 57th minute when Conwell hit a majestic 70 yard cross field pass to Cooke, who controlled it on the run and sent an inch perfect pass to McGavigan on the edge of the box. He
F&W Division 1 SAFC Reserves 2 v 2 Beragh Swifts Strabane Athletics’ reserve team recently played their second F&W Division 1 league fixture at Melvin Park and had to settle for a share of the spoils with a 2 all draw. Athletic started brightly and threatened to score when Gary O’Connell made a terrific solo run on the right flank before delivering a cross to Kiernan Kelly who’s snapshot from the edge of the box clipped the crossbar. Beragh responded immediately with 2 well worked openings but Winters in goals made 2 stunning saves with his feet to keep the visitors from taking the lead. On 15 minutes, the home side went in front. An inch perfect pass from a goal kick from Winters found McGuigan, he raced beyond his marker and although his shot was saved, strike partner O’Connell was quickest to the rebound and slotted home from 8 yards. Swifts were then gifted a lifeline when awarded a penalty for handball against Stephen Taylor. As he attempted to control the ball he was undone by the uneven playing surface and it took a wicked bounce and struck his hand. Swifts striker, Brown made no mistake with the spot kick, sending Winters the wrong way. This buoyed the Swifts as they dominated the last 15 minutes of the first half with a series of corners but a solid display from Porter, Glenn, Taylor and in particular young Eamon Ferguson ensured the home side remained on level terms at the break. Strabane’s Corry replaced O’Connell at the start of the second half and the debutant instantly showed some promising ability. 10 minutes into the second period, Athletic regained the lead when McGuigan and Kelly combined well on the left

jinked past the ‘Straw centre back before placing a firm strike beyond the keeper to make it 3 nil with his second of the game. Ardstraw could not cope with the fluent passing and fast flowing Athletic attacks and with Marc Devine replacing Aaron Patterson midway through the half, they had another headache to deal with. Devine’s trickery and speed create chances for Cooke, Breslin (on for McGavigan) and twice for himself but for all the effort the score line stayed the same. Pollock replaced Conwell who took a knock but with the game approaching the last 10 minutes Strabane eased down and started to play possession football. The game came to an end with Athletic running out very comfortable and deserved winners.
McGuigan proceeded and fired a firm strike beyond the visiting keeper from inside the penalty area to make it 2-1. Athletic then thought they had increased their lead only for Corry to have a headed effort ruled offside by the referee. Unfortunately, Athletic were conceding possession too easily which allowed the visitors to put the pressure on. A mix up at the back, provided the visitors with another chance on goal but a last-ditch tackle by Winters upended the advancing Beragh striker with the referee having no other choice but to show a straight red card an another penalty. Assistant manager and centre back, Barry Porter donned the gloves and made an outstanding save, diving low to his right to keep his team in front. Manager Doherty was quick to respond to going down to 10 men and replaced the attack minded Niall Devine with defending midfielder Jonathan McMonagle for the final 25 minutes. Swifts were pressurising Athletic all over the field and were making the most of the extra man advantage but with Athletic looking like they were holding for the win, the referee somehow allocated 7 minutes injury time and in the last of those, following Beragh’s third successive corner, Athletic were cruelly punished as the unmarked Brown passed the ball to Adams who had the simplest task of tapping it into the net from 3 yards. Manager Paul Doherty stated after the final whistle “it was another tough lesson for us today. We lost our 1st match with an injury time goal and now after drawing today in similar circumstances my players need to focus and ensure they play until the final whistle before they can celebrate a victory” SAFC Squad: Winters, Glenn (Cpt), S Taylor, Porter, Ferguson, Devine, P O’Connell, Kelly, Gillespie, McGuigan, G
Athletic manager, Martin Doherty stated “it was a good performance from us today but there was periods were we could’ve played better. Our defence again was solid with our keeper a mere spectator, our midfield battled from the first whistle and our strikers chased everything down and on a better day we could’ve scored a lot more. We are determined to push ourselves into the reckoning in every competition we can compete in this season and with the squad of players I have at my disposal I see no reason why more silverware won’t be on the table come April/May”. SAFC: O’Reilly, Conwell, J Donaghey (Cpt), Boyle, Roarty, McGavigan, G Donaghey, B Patterson, McGrinder, A Patterson, Cooke. Subs: Devine, Pollock, Breslin.

You have previously played at a higher level of football, why return to play for SAFC at junior level? I like to play for the enjoyment of it and I feel at home playing with Athletic. That’s not saying that I wouldn’t take the step up again in the years ahead. At present though I just enjoy the training and playing week in and out with friends from my home town. Apart from yourself obviously, who would you consider to be the most influential player in SAFC and why? In my opinion, that has to be Mickey Logue. He can play anywhere in the team and has the fitness, speed and ability to go on to better things but like me he’s just enjoying training and playing with friends. Finally, in one word what does it mean to play for your home town football team? Privileged From your answers above what will you regret saying? Raver Baby or Colin Farrell – think the stick is going to flow once this is published. I’m big enough to take it on the chin though!
