450 new jobs boost for Strabane and Lifford Around 450 jobs will be created along the Strabane Lifford border over the next two years as part of an innovative ÂŁ50 million project. The Three Rivers project, a cross border initiative, has unveiled plans for a sports centre, wildlife centre, hotel, employment park and a footbridge. The managing director of Riverside Building and Development, Niall McAteer, said he is confident building work can begin before the end of 2012. “Last October we passed a significant landmark and got outline planning permission for half the site. “The site is twice the size of that now, and for a number of months we’ve had a very professional team fully engaged with the Planning Service, Roads Service and Rivers Agency and other consultees. “Probably about ÂŁ35m will come from the private
sector, and we can deliver on that. “We wouldn’t be bringing forward a project to disapppoint people. “I think there have been too many examples in the past of people promising something they can’t deliver, and what we have in this plan and these proposals is deliverable. “We have the right investors to do it, we have the user interest to do it, we have the mix of uses to do it, and that’s why this is different, he said. West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty said the funds for the project have come from private investors. “All of this is private money, Mr Doherty said. “The projection is that in the first year there will be 450 jobs and that would build up over a three year period, and that is the key because Strabane is an unemployment black spot. “We have been working with these developers - both the local and wider grouping of people -to interest them in Strabane and to tackle this long and deeplyseated problem in Strabane of unemployment.

Driving and Vision It has been shown in studies that up to one in five middle aged drivers have driven whilst knowing they have poor eyesight therefore increasing their risk of having an accident.
Much of this is caused by people putting off their eye test after noticing their eyesight has deteriorated. There are many reasons people give for putting of an eye test such as they don’t want to wear spectacles as it makes them feel old, too busy or worried about the cost. However spectacles are now a fashion statement and Silhouette rimless frames are almost invisible and very light weight. Contact lenses are also an option and are very comfortable and safe to use. As for price many people get free eye tests on their medical card/ NHS and specs need not be expensive with ranges for all budgets. As for lack of time practices are

now open to suit all patients needs. Donal McGovern Optometrist, Strabane explains ‘ We realised a few years ago that patients not only wanted the option of been tested on a Saturday but also in the evening, so we now open on a Thursday night to 8 pm and a Saturday morning to 12.30 pm. Drivers must be aware that it is their legal responsibility to make sure they have adequate vision to drive and that failing to meet the visual standards required makes them dangerous drivers. It is also extremely important to go for regular eye examinations whether you wear specs or not as the eye examination is a vital health check and should be part of everyone’s normal health regime. To book an eye test or for any further information such as who is entitled to a free sight test please call into our store at 20 Castle Street, Strabane or telephone 028 71882506.

True Glee for Dee! Derry star Damian McGinty tells Strabane Herald that, while he’s lapping up global fame as part of the cast of Glee, his feet remain firmly on the ground and that his family have been his biggest inspiration
proved to be true - singing for Ryan six times, but coming out of it alive – an incredible experience, but wouldn’t do it again for love nor money. Strangely, Celtic Thunder didn’t help, because with them, I was performing big, to thousands of people in arenas and theatres, but on TV things are different. I didn’t realise this at the beginning. Therefore I had to put ‘Damian McGinty’ Celtic in my back pocket, and build up a new performer, whilst saving myself. It was anything but easy, but yet so rewarding when I see the results.
At the age of 19 local performer Damian McGinty has achieved what most young men his age could only dream of. He is well established in the third season of television phenomenon Glee after beating more than 40,000 young hopefuls for a role in the Glee project. Damian features in seven episodes.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life? The biggest influence on my life, without question is my family. I didn’t realise how big of an influence they were on me, my dad, mum, brother, sister, granny, and my granda who passed away three years ago now. Until this year came about, and from day one, literally, January 1st 2011, I have been fighting my own battles. They are always in my head - how would they do this, that? And, we were close before this, really close, but now we are like glue. I have all the respect in the world for them, and they will always be amazing people in my eyes. They are the reason I am were I am today.
Damian spoke to the Strabane Herald about his meteoric rise to fame, his inspirations and his hopes for the future. For the teenager who started out in singing group Celtic Thunder, the sky’s the limit and global fame is now in the bag. What were your emotions when you learned on stage that you had got a part in Glee? It is hard to describe. I never thought in my life, that I would lose the ability to have control of myself, but that was the moment! You can’t put it into words, knowing all that hard work has paid off, knowing that my life is taking an incredible twist, taking me out to live in L.A and to work on one of the biggest TV shows of all time, a phenomenal feeling.
How have you adapted to life in the United States?
How did your experience with Celtic Thunder prepare you for the Glee Project?
Obviously having the experience, made it easier for me to cope with the pressure, that’s for sure. It My experience with Celtic Thunder helped me in wasn’t easy, but I definitely felt that out of the 12, quite a few ways, but strangely, also hindered me. I was able to cope with pressure the best and that
By Eamonn Houston I now have the best job in the world. It’s my first experience working in TV, then having dance rehearsals, then getting rushed to the recording studio. If you could do one thing in your l ife what would that be? I am doing what I want to do in my life. But I want to go further. I have done the group thing with Celtic Thunder and now I have moved into TV, but it’s both singing and acting. It’s perfect. It gives me a chance to prove myself as an actor on a huge stage, and I plan to grab it with both hands and run. I have always said to people who ask “what do you want to do?” My answer has always been “I want to sell millions of albums; I want to tour and sing to millions of people, I want to be in TV shows and I want to do movies.” What does the Northwest mean to you? My hometown and the Northwest means everything. I love the people. I love the humour. I love the food, every single thing about Derry, Ireland, I love. I have so much respect for everybody there. When I get home at Christmas for a while, I am going to lap it up, being there because I love it so much. I haven’t been there much the past four years. This year, I have barely been there at all, and now, living in L.A things, have changed dramatically. I’m never gonna be there now. It’s a hard pill to swallow now and then. But I am gonna do Derry and Ireland proud out here. That’s who I am representing.
I have adapted in America like a complete jigsaw. Things could not be better. I love everything out here. But, one thing about me, is that home will always be Derry. When I have time off, that’s were I will go. And 20 years down the line, that’s where I’ll live. Although I have to admit, I love America. Every- You can see Damien McGinty as Rory Flanagan in thing about it. But it makes things easier the fact Glee every Thursday at 8pm on Sky One.

Unlike snow chains grip is provided by an all covering textile surface with no metal parts being used. It's big advantages are that, provided there is sufficient hand room to pull them over the top of the tyre, it is extremely quick and simple to fit. There is nothing to chafe around the back of the tyre making them ideal for cars with limited clearances around the wheel. Fitting is also made easier since there is nothing to adjust and they automatically self center as you drive. Since there is no metal chain in contact with the road, the WeissSock is totally smooth running with absolutely no vibrations or noise being apparent and give you the best traction ANY SNOW SOCK will give you in snow.

Duddy boxes clever in retirement Retired Northwest boxing hero John Duddy has spoken to the Strabane Herald about how is adapting to his new life outside the ring.
seemed the limit for Duddy who steadily nurtured an impressive record of knock outs and wins. High points included his gruelling 2006 bout with brick-hard Mexican Yory Boy Campas, a fight remembered for its tireless slugging on the part of both fighters.
By Eamonn Houston Duddy says he is happily settled in New York with wife Grainne and is currently considering a number of options for his future. The Derryman became a local hero during a swashbuckling eight-year career that took him to some of boxing’s most glittering arenas and within touching distance of a crack at the middleweight world title.
With typical candid courage Duddy announced in January: “After a great deal of soul-searching, I have decided to retire from boxing.”
By any measure it was a brave and honest decision and his career obituary filled column inches in New York’s and Ireland’s sports pages. Many commentators praised him for making the right decision at the right time and it is obvious he was fondly regarded in the Big Apple’s boxing circles.
“In many ways, continuing to fight would be the easy course of action. I have been offered the opportunity to fight Andy Lee on HBO for a purse in excess of $100,000. A win would put me in position to fight for a world championship. This is not an opportunity that I cast aside lightly.
Since then, Duddy has been taking stock and going about life in his trademark cheerful way. His trademark thumbs up and ‘Happy days’ are still very much there and he comes across as less a man mourning the passing of a dream, than a young man enthusiastically embarking on the next part of his life. He is very happily married to his long-time love, Derry girl Grainne (Coll). Both live and work in New York and for the foreseeable future, Duddy sees his base as there.
“I started watching my father train in the gym when I was five years old. I began fighting competitively at age 10. For more than 20 years, I loved being a boxer. I still feel that it’s an enormous honour to be a boxer. But I don’t love it anymore. I no longer have the enthusiasm and willingness to make
“I’m lucky to have many good memories. Walking out to Madison Square Garden and hearing the crowd roar ‘Duddy, Duddy’, was very thrilling. But the one closest to my heart was filling the King’s hall in Belfast and living for one night in one of my idol’s shoes. Everyone in that Hall was united singing ‘Duddy, Duddy’. It doesn’t get much better than that.”
During that career Duddy lost just twice in 31 bouts, with 18 of his wins by knockout, an impressive 10 of those KO’s coming in the first round. He is the former IBA World and WBC Continental Americas middleweight title holder. Duddy announced his retirement from boxing on January 19 this year, after “a great deal of soul-searching” and stated that his decision is final. “I give you my word; I will not come back”. This scuppered plans for a lucrative all-Irish showdown in New York against fellow countryman Andy Lee. “I wouldn’t say I’m adapting to life outside the ring, I’m adapting to life after boxing. I’m enjoying the opportunities I’ve made through my time in the ring and I’m busy now finding another passion I can focus on. Only one I in which I don’t get knocked around. Hah ha!,” Duddy told the Strabane Herald. During those eight years Duddy carved out a

successful boxing career with a combative, aggressive boxing style and film star good looks propelling him to iconic status among New York’s massive Irish community. The sky
the sacrifices that are necessary to honour the craft of prize fighting. I used to love going to the gym. Now it’s a chore. I wish I still had the hunger, but I don’t. The fire has burned out. And I know myself well enough to know that it won’t return.” After a career that saw him rack up 29 wins, two defeats with an impressive 18 knock outs Duddy had come to the end of his journey as a boxer.

Three new Neighbourhood Watch schemes have been launched in Castlederg. By Kevin McAnena Eight new co-ordinators were introduced to locals at a well attended event in the Derg Valley Leisure Centre, where over 60 residents were present. Keeping an eye on the Millbrook Gardens area of the town will be, Robbie McKinley April Harron, William Wallace and Charlene Harron. Melanie Sproule will co-ordinate the scheme in Castlegore, while Nicola Edgar, Margaret Bogle and Andrea Lowry are in charge of the Hospital Road.
Castlederg is the 3rd town/village in the Strabane District Council area to sign up to a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) scheme, with over 250 homes enrolling as members. Constable Joni McGeehan from Castlederg Neighbourhood Policing Team introduced the 8 new co-ordinators for the schemes. Speaking at the event, Inspector Ivor Morton, Strabane PSNI stated: “Neighbourhood Watch is a system that promotes being a good neighbour. It means that neighbours look out for each other, especially those who are most vulnerable. It promotes neighbours being vigilant, reporting suspicious activity and working together to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.” The establishment of these three schemes means there are now a total of five Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in the Strabane District Council area.

MediCare Pharmacy Group has been urging people to take advantage of the free NHS services available in their 54 pharmacies across Northern Ireland as part of national campaign, Ask your Pharmacist Week 2011, which ran last month. MediCare MD, Michael Guerin commented, “When you go into your local MediCare pharmacy, you can access much more than just medicines. Each of our pharmacists can offer you a wealth of expert health and wellbeing advice along with a range of free schemes and services that many are still unaware of. “The advantages of being able to consult with a pharmacist in confidence about your medicines can be enormous. We will advise you in how to get the most out of your medicine and how to reduce the chance of incorrect or inappropriate use which can
of course cause more harm than good.” Throughout Ask your Pharmacist Week 2011, MediCare pharmacists have encouraged patients to ask any questions they may have, no matter how trivial they may think they are. Most pharmacies now have private consultation areas where you can sit down and talk with the pharmacist individually in confidence and these services are of course available at all times, not just this week. The Ask Your Pharmacist Week initiative is organised annually by the National Pharmacy Association for all pharmacies. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the range of services and expert advice available to people on their doorstep in pharmacies. Log on to www.askyourpharmacist. co.uk for more information and www.medicaregroup.com to find your local MediCare pharmacy.

Give something with meaning this Christmas
...write your own story!
“Remember whatever you give this Christmas, give it without expecting anything in return” Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat Please to put a penny in the old man’s hat; If you haven’t got a penny, a ha’penny will do, If you haven’t got a ha’penny then God bless you! This old nursery rhyme reminds me of the coming of Christmas and the importance of giving, especially at this time. I believe there is something very special about giving and in many cases it better to give than receive. I also believe that it is impossible to give without receiving. It is amazing how good I can feel by giving somebody something. Therefore the actual act of giving allows me to receive a good feeling. I can give someone my time or even if it is just a smile or a greeting and I can feel better. Too often it is easy to get caught up in a mistaken belief that what we give must be valuable or it will be treated as valueless. One of the realities of the current economic downturn is the fact that many people are unable to buy the gifts and presents that they could afford in better times.
Another person called me up to give me feedback on how they were getting on since we last met. Again I really appreciated the call and the time and thoughtfulness that person showed in contacting me. Giving a helping hand to someone is something to think about at this time. We all have loved ones who do lots of things for us throughout the year. Think now of how you can give of yourself to help such loved ones over this Christmas time. Giving appreciation and acknowledgement for all they do is often enough, however use this time and make a special effort to do something for them for a change. You will feel the better for it and realize that life is about give and take. Remember whatever you give this Christmas, give it without expecting anything in return. Expecting something in return can set you up for disappointment. Give lovingly and you will be blessed in other ways. We can only give what we have therefore, think about what you have to give this Christmas and give it freely. We all have lots to give even though we may think the opposite. We all have time, encouragement, love, help, energy, good will, companionship, patience, presence, peace, forgiveness, blessings and understanding to give to name but a few. Which of these can you give this Christmas to ensure both you and the person you give such things to have a happy meaningful Christmas?
Perhaps this too is a blessing as it can make us more creative and aware that the giving of ourselves to other people had got lost in the ‘fog’ of past present giving and now is a wonderful opportunity to recover the skill of giving of ourselves. A client of mine once painted a ceramic teddy bear for me and another created a handmade quilt. I shudder to think of the time, effort and love that went into making these wonderful gifts. Nothing Have a merry meaningful Christmas everyone. already made would have had the same impact. Tom Herron

People with diabetes not receiving essential healthcare checks Last month we brought you the story of the huge increase in diabetes in Strabane with most recent figures indicating that 1,886 adults in Strabane are now diagnosed with diabetes, a 34% increase in the condition since 2006.
some Trusts in Northern Ireland don’t currently offer any education while in the Belfast Trust there is a three year waiting list for one course.” The charity is urging people to support its new 15 healthcare essentials campaign which, by outlining the minimum standards of care people with diabetes should receive, aims to ensure people with the condition are able to access the care they need to stay healthy and reduce the risk of complications. In particular, Diabetes UK Northern Ireland is calling on:
By Kevin McAnena It’s now emerged that a new survey by leading health charity Diabetes UK has found that hundreds of people, including some in the north, are not receiving essential healthcare checks. The survey results, based on the personal experiences of 7,000 people with diabetes in the UK, including over 100 people in Northern Ireland, indicated that 32 per cent of respondents have never been offered any education to help them manage their diabetes despite the Department indicating that everyone with diabetes should be offered such assistance. The leading health charity says people need to receive all health checks and information they need to help them manage their condition and prevent diabetes-related complications.
Brendan Heaney, Policy and Public Affairs Manager for Diabetes UK Northern Ireland, said: “Structured diabetes education can give those living with diabetes the tools and knowledge that are essential to help them manage their condition. Diabetes is an unrelenting condition where people must manage it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, often with limited knowledge.” He added: “Structured education provides this knowledge and has been shown to improve control leading to less hospital admissions and a reduction in complications. Unfortunately we know that

monitored and targeted to improve standards of care. It is considered vital that people with diabetes receive the 15 healthcare essentials because: People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to have a heart attack and up to five times more likely to have kidney failure than people without the condition. There are 72,693 adults with diabetes in Northern Ireland, which equates to 3.8 per cent of the adult population. Diabetes UK Chief Executive, Barbara Young, said: “The rising tide of diabetes-related complications threatens to bankrupt the NHS as well as ruin people’s lives. It is vital that every one of the 1,886 adults with diabetes in Strabane receives the 15 healthcare essentials to prevent them from developing such devastating complications. We are also calling on the many healthcare professionals who are already backing our campaign for better standards of care to ensure this becomes a reality for their patients.”
• Healthcare professionals and commissioners to use the checklist to ensure their patients are receiving the minimum standard of care they require and to prioritise integrated and structured diabetes For more information about Diabetes UK’s 15 care in all service plans. • Assembly to place a greater emphasis on pri- measures campaign visit www.diabetes.org.uk/15oritising diabetes and to ensure complications are essentials

Fantastic new outdoor store now open in Strabane
BRIDGE GUNS AND TACKLE… AN OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS DREAM! A NEW shop catering for outdoor sports enthusiasts has just recently opened in Strabane. The name of the shop is ‘The Bridge Gun & Tackle’. The shop is located on Bridge Street and has already had its official opening. Well-known local angler and previous outdoor retailer Billy Diver was there to open the new shop. Well known throughout Ireland, Billy ran a shop in Strabane and previously the markets before that for 38 years and has a long association with fishing and shooting circles here. The shop is well located for river users and from the bridge you can see Billy’s pool, appropriately named after Billy for all the work he has done over the years with the local anglers.
Kieran Cairns will also be working in the shop. Kieran like Brendan and Paul has been fishing our local rivers from a young age. Kieran is a qualified angling coach and has been guiding for the two local angling clubs this past couple of years. Kieran is also an avid fly tier and his flies are tried and tested and he will be glad to help anyone looking for any guidance on fly tying. fishing and shooting clubs in the town from an early age and has always had ambitions of setting up a tackle and gun shop. Paul is a keen fisherman and enjoys game and sea fishing; he also has a keen interest in working dogs and rough shooting and spends any free time he has exercising these hobbies.
Shop owner Paul Forbes along with Billy Diver carried out the opening in front of some members of the local shooting and hunting fraternities. Paul, who already runs two businesses in the town, has always been involved in shooting and fishing in the local area believes that there is an opening in the town for a wellstocked shop offering the essential shooting and fishing accessories.
Paul has employed two local men to work in the shop each with their own backgrounds in fishing and shooting. Brendan Winters will be running the shop. Brendan is currently the secretary of both the local angling clubs and has been a local fishing guide for a number of years. Brendan is also involved in deer stalking and is involved in deer management in the Paul himself has been involved in nearby area.
With their combined backgrounds hopefully they will be able to provide some invaluable guidance to anyone thinking of taking up fishing or shooting in our local area, or any guidance on what accessories or equipment they may require. The Bridge Guns & Tackle will be running fly tying classes for juniors and Brendan Winters, Billy Diver, Paul Forbes and Kieran Cairns. seniors and a Winter Trout League. The event‘s popularity is still growing from its’ first outing in 2008. As is the case each year, a new group of novice dancers have been drawn together and guided through various dance routines by a team of well experienced tutors. The results as we have seen over the previous events, will speak for itself. Once again, special charities are nominated as benefactors to share the bounty of well earned profits. The nominated benefactors this year are ‘Strabane Parish’ as our hosts and the Foyle Hospice. The programme has been upgraded to maximise the variety and entertainment value for the paying public. Strabane man’s harrowing Middle East tale
Strabane native Felim Egan recounts his terrifying ordeal at the hands of the Israeli government as he was kidnapped and held captive for nine days. “These were commandos. They were heavily armed, they had black balaclavas on and they had very sophisticated gear. I noticed the laser beams on my head and on my chest…We sat as calm as possible, facing the soldiers with our hands on our knees.”
What Strabane native Felim Egan encountered in the Middle East just a few short weeks ago sounds like a scene from a Hollywood movie, but the experience was all too real. Sailing on the MV Saoirse as part of the Irish Ship to Gaza campaign, he and several other high profile activists had intended to break the naval blockade on the Gaza strip. In what held the potential to develop into a full blown diplomatic crisis, 14 Irish citizens were detained by the Israeli navy despite being in international waters. They were kept in Israeli custody for over a week, were subjected to regular strip searches, had their sleep routinely disrupted, and were continuously harassed and intimidated. Felim, who is a renowned artist and member of Aosdána, said he feared he would die. The team set off on Tuesday 1st November with the Canadian ship Tahrir as part of Freedom Waves – the idea, to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.
The MV Saoirse “We were hoping we might get there this time because of all the publicity surrounding the last flotilla where nine people were murdered on the Turkish boat, and the Turkish reaction was very strong over the last few months,” Felim said. Other activists on board included campaign co-ordinator Dr Fintan Lane, former Irish rugby player Trevor Hogan, Socialist MEP Paul Murphy and Sinn Fein councillors John Hearne and Patrick Fitzgerald. The group were about 50 nautical miles from Gaza when the trouble began: “We looked out and we could see up to five battleships and two gunboats, and they were coming in our direction from two sides,” he explained. “After about half an hour they deployed two small boats equipped
were heavily armed, they had black balaclavas on and they had very sophisticated gear. I noticed the laser beams on my head and on my chest,” Felim recalled. “Everyone was very frightened and they were very aggressive.” Talks ensued as co-ordinator Fintan Lane told the officers they were not welcome on the MV Saoirse, although insisted that the team were peaceful and weren’t a theat. His talking proved fruitless as they eventually relented. Surrounded by battleships, and mindful of what had happened in the past, the group reluctantly agreed to steer their ship towards the Israeli port of Ashdod as they were ordered to. The activists were now in the hands of the army, and one by one were led to a huge yard. “There was very, very aggressive behaviour going on with the soldiers. They were insulting us and pushing us around a bit. It was very frightening at that point again,” he said. The activists were then separated from each other before being photographed while they were strip searched. Belongings were also confiscated and searched. “We were taken for an interview and we were charged. This was maybe by a lawyer or a judge, who asked us to sign a paper saying that we wished to be deported. It would have constituted that we were admitting that we entered Israel illegally. We all refused to sign it, because it would have made it legitimate what they did.” Eventually they were coached to Givon prison, were they were searched again. “We were brought into the prison, and it was a dirty, 1950s type building. The cell was absolutely filthy, it was very cold. There was a steel door about four inches thick and with five locks on it, and the cell was very brightly lit,” he said. The next several days saw the Strabane man and his colleagues involved in a battle of wits with prison guards as sleep deprivation tactics were used against them, and they were denied freedom of association on a number of occasions. “It was all designed to unsettle and intimidate us,” Felim said. They were informed they would spend 72 hours in prison before anything would happen. The three days came and went with meetings with the Irish Ambassador Breifne O’Reilly but nothing was clear. “Our hopes were raised and dashed all the time. This just went on and on, they were grinding us down. The sense of not knowing was desperate.” “We were asked five or six times to sign this form, and they kept coming after we’d had our phone call home,
which I think was a very emotional and difficult time for us all. After that I think they knew we were emotional and wanted to go home, so they said, ‘You can go home if you sign’. One of the Canadians signed the form (at the beginning), but nine days later he was still with us. He was told if he signed he could go home, but when he did they said, ‘No, not everyone signed’. So they lied. Everything was a lie. They’d always say ‘later’, or ‘tomorrow’.” He added: “Tuesday (8th November) was my birthday and I spent it in jail. The lads had stacked up a few biscuits and we tried to have a sing-song to keep our spirits up, but it was tough.” On Wednesday (9th November) seven of the group were taken from the jail and told they’d be leaving on Thursday morning. On Friday morning Felim and the rest of the group were summonsed to the airport for an El Al flight to London, and on to Dublin. Along the way MEP Paul Murphy was put in solitary confinement for complaining about being roughed up. “One by one the seven of us were led outside to the ambassador,” he explained. “We were very worried that we might not get on the flight as there was very little time to spare. This was after 8, the flight was at 9. We were all apprehensive. He (the Irish Ambassador) said, ‘Look, try to hold it in, don’t answer back. These guys are likely to do anything at this stage.’” Two flights later and all the activists were safely back in Dublin, by now severely chastened but in better spirits on receiving their welcomes home. “My family had driven down from Strabane to see me - they were very worried because they were getting conflicting reports all the time. We were relieved to be home. We all had our moments. Every day we had a moment were we had to sneak off and let out a bit. But we didn’t let them see that we were down.” Felim admits he wasn’t entirely impressed with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamonn Gilmore’s response, but insisted that despite his ordeal he wanted the people of Gaza to remain the focus of attention. “We don’t want to be the story. It’s still about Palestine; it’s still about the illegal blockade that Israel has imposed unilaterally. It’s about the Gazan people…We would like them to have independence from Israel. You can’t bring people aid forever, and you really need to allow people dignity and to live their own lives. We are simply trying to bring their collective punishment to world attention and get the blockade lifted.”

Foyle Hospice Race night at Sweenos McGinty’s A very entertaining night of fundraising took place at Sweeno McGinty’s last month. Six local Strabane men, Don Colhoun, Dale Coyle, Dominic and Sean Carlin, Jason Ward and Liam Maguire who will be participating in London Marathon 2012 held a very successful night at the races. The boys wish to thank all the sponsors who bought a dog on the night. A total of £2100 was raised. Speaking on behalf of the group Sean Colhoun said “In these very difficult times once again the people of Strabane and neighbouring areas have put their hands in their pockets to support a very worthy cause. The group are delighted that fundraising is well on the way to hit its target of £10,000 in aid of the Foyle Hospice.”

Will It Be a Good Year For The Roses? The announcement in October that the definitive line-up of The Stone Roses are to reform after 16 years apart has had men and women of a certain age in quite a spin for the past few weeks. For some it’s the “third coming” of “Manchester’s finest”, for others it’s no big deal and for others like myself it has instigated weeks of indecision. Please indulge me for a moment – apologies in advance. In 1989 I became a teenager. It was also the year that I first heard The Stone Roses. To this day I can still remember hearing the opening chimes to the opening track on that classic Roses debut album and immediately feeling that I had arrived somewhere special. “Kiss me where the sun don’t shine, the past was yours but the future’s mine,” declared singer Ian Brown on ‘She Bang the Drums’. John Squire’s guitar could be a dagger or a sunset – it simply hit every note you willed it to. Like many my age I celebrated the arrival of “my band” singing “my songs”. It’s a moment everybody has with a certain band and for me it happened with The Stone Roses. Then I saw them being interviewed on television. They were pretty dull. Then I saw a video of them playing live. Ian Brown was awful. Regardless, the debut album still got played relentlessly. Then, in 1990, they simply vanished beneath a legal battle with their record company that kept them out for the studio until the mid-90s. In between that
time the Gallagher brothers from Burnage took note, filled the void and stripped it down, albeit without the fusion of dance and psycedelic rock that was one of the Roses’ finer attributes. In their absence, fans of the Roses jumped deeper into the musical map that they’d been handed by the band, so much so that by the time the band returned they were fighting for a place in the cd player they once claimed residency of years earlier. Personally I failed to connect with ‘The Second Coming’ album in 1995 with the same enthusiasm I had for the momentous debut of 1989. The eventual departures of drummer ‘Reni’ and John Squire and the eventual split following that final disastrous show at the Reading Festival in 1996 meant nothing to me. Therefore, when the Roses reformation was announced last month my initial reaction was, “I wouldn’t go down to Melvin to see them now”. Then, a line from an old song called ‘Rubber Ring’ by The Smiths came to mind: “Don’t forget the songs
A classic song is not just for Christmas
It was barely a day after Halloween and the familiar festive chimes could be heard all over the television as the Christmas advertising campaign began in a frenzy.
The Stone Roses are back once again! Will it be a happy reformation...that’s what we don’t know.
that made you smile...yes you’re older now and you’re clever swine but they were the only ones who ever stood by you.” I then recalled the days when I played that debut album by the Roses to death and how special it made me feel. The music we listen to in our teens will always have a place in our hearts, and nothing will connect with us on quite the same level later in life. So I then began to warm to the idea of the reformation, but for, as I saw it, the right reasons. Reforming now will give even the Roses’ most devoted fans an opportunity to see the band live for the first time, such was the band’s tendency to hold one-off ‘events’ rather than go on the conventional tour circuit at their peak. The 2012 tour is set to be very lucrative for the band members. The financial rewards may well have had
An album to Like and Love As addressed in this music column previously, the HipHop scene in Strabane is producing perhaps the most exciting music in the town at present. This view has been reinforced quite convincingly by the release of the new album by Gerardi2 aka Gerard McDaid, titled ‘What I Like and Love’. Following on from his 2010 debut release ‘2 Dirt 4 The Radio’, this new collection is not only an improvement on his impressive debut; it shows that Gerardi2 has not sat still and depended on a winning formula but has worked at and developed his craft and allowed it to grow just as he has. While ‘What I Like and Love’ is a more mature collection than ‘2 Dirt 4 the Radio’, don’t let that be a cause for concern Hip-Hop fans; restrained complacency is not in Gerardi2’s vocabulary and this album bites positively throughout and the ‘Parental Advisory: Explicit Content’ sticker on the cover is definitely not for show! ‘What I Like and Love’ digs deep both into Gerardi2’s mind and his record collection. Jimmy Helms is the soul on speed backdrop to the blissful ‘Can’t Refuse’, which is one of a number of tracks to feature fellow Strabane HipHop player, H.C. aka Danny Houston. In fact, the special guests jump out all over this album, including Dublin’s Mic Ryan on the Wildean ‘Star Gazin’ and Strabane’s Mr Mills aka Stephen Mills on the defiant bounce of ‘Never Back Down’. ‘What I Like and Love’ defies the myth about that difficult second album and is an accurate document of a local artist growing stronger and stronger. Gerardi2 has a tale to tell and we look forward to where it will take us next. Meanwhile check out ‘What I Like and Love’ here: http://gerardi2.bandcamp.com/album/what-i-like-and-love
some influence on regrouping and if so, so what? A lot of people got rich thanks to The Stone Roses especially from 1990 onwards; a lot of people apart from the band members themselves. Isn’t it only right that they should get something back? So will they be any good? Will Ian Brown be any better? Do those who bought the tickets care? The gigs will no doubt be spectacular events with the crowd singing every word to every single song in the set. Is it just nostalgia? Can people be nostalgic for something they’re seeing for the first time? So many questions have circled this relaxed brain over the past month. I’ve tried to be cynical but there are bigger things in this life deserving of our cynicism, so what the hell – you never forget your first time!
REVIEW
One ad in particular has got music fans talking and that’s the Christmas ad for department store John Lewis. The £6 million advert features a cover version of The Smiths’ classic ‘Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want’ and tells the story of a young boy eagerly awaiting December 25 so he can surprise his parents with a present. Steven Patrick Morrissey – the wordsmith of festive cheer – who’da thunk it?! Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr faced a weather storm of vitriol on his Twitter account from fans appalled that he could’ve agreed to allow such a universal anthem of longing to be cheapened like this. One fan tweeted Marr to say: “I find it hard to believe you agreed to let the song be used by a company that sells tat to middle class ******s. Very sad.” But the guitar icon tweeted back: “Writing ‘Please Please Please’ one Friday in 84 is one of the best memories of my life. This ad has not sullied that memory one bit.” He also used his Twitter account to mock fans who had complained about the ad by saying: “For all those taste makers er, watching the commercials during X Factor no less”. Good point well made Johnny boy! While undoubtedly one of the finest things Morrissey and Marr ever wrote together, ‘Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want’ has never immediately struck anyone as a Christmas song and yes, the sentimental story running through the ad has led to perhaps one of the greatest miss-interpretations of a song since couples played stalker anthem ‘Every Breath You Take’ by The Police at their wedding. Christmas will pass and the ad will cease to appear on our screens. The beauty of the original version will still sit as the closing track on ‘Hatful of Hollow’ come January, just as it has since 1984. While the version in the ad is truly awful it will, despite how some of us may spit and spew, have no bearing on the legacy The Smiths, just as John Lydon selling butter has not sullied the memory of The Sex Pistols or PIL – in fact the money received for that ad helped Lydon to finance a new PIL album. Iggy Pop selling car insurance does not make The Stooges any less the pre-punk ‘Search and Destroy’ icons they will always be. Bob Dylan selling Victoria Secret lingerie (yes it happened!) doesn’t stop ‘Bringing It All Back Home’, ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ and ‘Blonde on Blonde’ being landmark albums. That being said, kindly do one good deed over Christmas when the John Lewis ad comes on and your child sings along. Please, please, please direct them to the band from Manchester who composed the original. I should warn you however, such a manoeuvre may see your child decline turkey come Christmas day – so it hasn’t been completely worthless!

the young players have done the club and the area proud: “It’s a great achievement for the club and gives us something to build on for the future,” she said. She added that it’s particularly pleasing that it’s not just one batch of players, but the youth system as a whole is reaping the rewards of the hard work put in by coaches and players alike: “It’s brilliant, and it’s great to see that it’s right down to our under-13s. So hopefully the next few years should be very prosperous for our youth teams right up to minor level, and hopefully that will extend through to our reserves and senior teams and they
can make their mark there. The future looks bright anyway!” Minor team manager Gerard Kelly echoed those sentiments: “These are the best bunch of lads I’ve worked with in the club. It’s been a brilliant season. Urney beat us twice earlier in the season and we were able to turn it around and beat them in the semi-final, before we beat Aghaloo in the final. But the biggest plus is that we had eight players from the under-16s playing with the minors, and then we have those successful under-13 and under-14 teams, so they’re all feeding into each other.”

The Allstate Strabane Halloween Event this year was in support of MacMillan Nurses and St. Vincent de Paul. Half of the proceeds raised have been donated to the ‘MacMillan Nurses Fund’ and the remaining half of the money raised will be used to purchase bags of coal to be distributed to the local elderly by St. Vincent de Paul. Numerous events took place this year,
each event cost £1 to enter and employees were able to purchase an All Day Event Ticket, which provided one entry into every event for the discounted price of £5. The Halloween Event again proved highly popular, with every area being represented in the many events. Some of the most popular events proved to be the Chilling Bingo, Terrible Tests and Horror

It’s that time of year once again... the forest is a bit of a disaster. Back at the Castle Funny ha ha the Court Jester (Paddy McMenamin) Oh yes it is ! The Christmas Panto, Robin Hoodwinked, is in the throes of final rehearsals, costume making, set making and painting, finishing touches to the dancing and singing. It’s all go at the Balor Theatre with almost 100 people involved. Many new faces in the Chorus this year, all new talent emerging. Robin Hood (Margaret O’Neill) returns to claim the hand of the fair Maid Marion (Ken Lillis) only in this case the hairy Maid Marion who is to be married to the Sheriff (Liam Breen). The Sheriff is rather unwilling but is under threat of death to marry or else. Meanwhile King John (Cathal Patton) is taxing the people to the hilt, bit like our own government eh, so Robin Hood and the Merry Men rob the rich to give to the poor, wish we had a Robin Hood! Enter Sir Guy of Gisbourne (JC Bonar) to fight the Merry Men, but oh dear he has a sore foot and the sword fight in
is in love with Honey He Ho (Niamh McMenamin) but he just can’t seem to get it right and ends up proposing to the Veiled Lady (Kathleen McMenamin). Then there is the cake to be made for the wedding and with Maid Marion and an inebriated Sheriff and King John, things get a bit messy. The Merry Men, Michael Duffy and Patrick McMenamin along with Little Joan (Mary Laverty), Friar Tuck (Eddie Mulligan) and the outrageous Will Scarlet (Gordon Lucas) all add to the mayhem. All this fun and then there is the dancing with the Ladies in Waiting and the Chorus and the songs of course. So come along with all the family and have a great night out. Whilst it is already well booked there is still room for more so don’t leave it too late. Booking at 074 9131840. Prices kept low once again, Family of 4 just €30.

Just 2 weeks until Strabane’s Irish Dancing version of Strictly!
Meet the stars of Strictly Jigs & Reels In just under two week’s time, a unique dancing event will take place here in Strabane in aid of Foyle Hospice. ‘Strictly Jigs & Reels’ gets its name because it is basically the Strictly come dancing format with an Irish dancing twist. Ten couples will compete for the 2011 Jigs & Reels title, 10 experienced female Irish dancers partnered with 10 local male volunteers with no previous dance experience! The show is being directed by Niamh Browne McGranaghan of the Niamh Browne School of Dance and will take place in The Den, Melmount Road, Strabane on Thursday 15th December, doors open at 7pm. Tickets for the event are priced at £10 each and can be purchased from any of the participants or organisers. The experienced female dancers for the event include a host of local talent, Catherine Sweeney, Orla McHugh, Ciara Travers, Clara McMenamin, Grainne Connolly, Aine Brennan, Emma McGranaghan, Caoimhe Stewart, Lauren Floyd & Abbie Gallagher. They will be partnered by the following diverse mix of male volunteers and local characters: Liam Sweeney, Mervyn Finlay, Raymond Barr, Tony Dunne, Michael Hannigan, Tony McGinley, Paddy O’Kane , Stephen McBride , Paul McGranaghan & Marcus Farrell. The couples have been training hard for a number of weeks now so here is a wee bit about the contestants…
Liam Sweeney & Clara McMenamin
Local businessman, publican & GAA stalwart, Liam literally jumped at the opportunity to raise money for a very worthy cause. Suspicions are that he really can’t wait to grace that stage and let loose his artistic side. A hugely enthusiastic influence in the group. Clara hails from Aghyaran and has been dancing since she was able to walk! She has competed at various levels throughout her dancing career and has won multiple titles & championships. Clara is also heavily involved in the GAA with Aghyaran & Tyrone. Asked recently on their progress to date, Clara commented that Liam ‘had now perfected his click two threes despite the dodgy hip!’
Tony Dunne & Grainne Connolly Strabane based businessman and roofing contractor Tony believes his boxing experience from his teenage years gives him a speed advantage with his feet. The Billy Elliott of the group, it is obvious he has been waiting years for this opportunity to free the dancer in him. Rumour has it he has been seen dancing on the roofs while at work such is his dedication!
Hugely popular local entertainer Mervyn is a well-known face on the local pub & club circuit. A hugely willing participant, Sion Mills based Mervyn is another who has been quick off the blocks in rehearsals. Rumour has it that he has even been offering out his dancing skills for private hire at weddings, christenings and special occasions! Emma is from Strabane and is another who has been involved with Irish dancing from a very young age. A recently graduated law student, Emma is a hugely popular and dedicated individual and has been pushing Mervyn to the limit in rehearsals. Commenting on their stamina sapping routine, Emma said ‘we have introduced some extra training to increase Mervyn’s fitness levels. His technical ability is second to none and we are definitely in this to win it.’ Stephen McBride & Caoimhe Stewart
Grainne is from Castlederg and is another who has been involved in dancing for many years. A student at Holy Cross College, this graceful and elegant dancer has been set a difficult task. Commenting on her partner, she stated ‘his energy & exuberance is unlimited and I certainly think we could win this!’ Raymond Barr & Aine Brennan
Part time Civil Servant and full time Greyhound Trainer Stephen has fully embraced the entire spirit of the event. Definitely the joker in the pack yet a wily veteran of the local Strictly circuit. Whispers from those in the know reckon the greyhounds have never been in better shape since the training for Jigs & Reels began! Caoimhe is from Strabane and is a student at Holy Cross College. This talented dancer has been dancing from a very young age and has to call on all of that experience to keep her partner focussed on perfecting their routine. She stated ‘Stephen undoubtedly has all the attributes to be a fantastic Well-known local publican Raymond is fulfill- dancer. However, I may have to confiscate ing a lifelong ambition by properly learning his phone so he can fully concentrate while his jigs & reels. Also heavily involved with rehearsing!’ Strabane Athletic Football Club, Raymond is sure to bring a heavy vocal support to the Tony McGinley event. This duo has been very fast out of & Ciara Travers traps in rehearsals with a spectacular routine but have they peaked too early? Aine is from Spamount, Castlederg and has been involved with Irish dancing from a very young age. She works as a Pharmacist in Letterkenny and possesses boundless enthusiasm and excellent organisational skills. Aine commented recently that they ‘intended to steal the show with their innovative and adventurous routine.’ Mervyn Finlay & Emma McGranaghan
A real enthusiast and perfectionist, Sion native Tony was quick to put his dancing skills to the test for a very worthy cause. The first of the men to don a pair of ‘heavy shoes’, Tony believes this may provide him with the head start need to win the competition! Ciara is from Aghyaran and is another experienced dancer who has danced at numerous

FOYLE HOSPICE local events. A student at Loreto Grammar, Omagh, Ciara has been hugely impressed by Tony. ‘We have been set a challenging routine however Tony has been making huge strides over the last couple of weeks’, Ciara said. Paddy O’Kane & Lauren Floyd
this is just a ploy to scare off the opposition! Local student Abbie has been involved with dancing for years. A talented dancer with boundless enthusiasm she has been pushing her partner to the extreme. ‘We are taking the basics of Irish Dance and adding a very contemporary twist. This routine will definitely have the edge on our rivals. In the bag!’, commented Abbie. Marcus Farrell & Orlagh McHugh
Local postman Paddy has been hop two three-ing his way through his daily rounds since agreeing to participate in this event. Seems to be keeping a little bit up his sleeve to become the surprise package on the night. And has been getting a fair amount of genial comment regarding his dancing from friends and family. Strabane student Lauren is another experienced dancer who is enjoying the challenge set for herself and Paddy. A very popular and talented dancer, Lauren believes Paddy will have a fitness edge over his rivals due to his line of work. ‘The daily exercise Paddy gets as part of his work is something that some of the others don’t have and you can see this coming through in rehearsals. I think we could win this!’ Lauren commented. Michael Hannigan & Abbie Gallagher
A student of Holy Cross College and the youngest of the group, Strabane native Marcus have been excellent in rehearsals to date. Has been making everyone sit up and take notice with his clicks & skips. Could he be the dark horse of the competition? Orlagh is also a student at Holy Cross College and has been dancing for many years. A very popular figure in the group, Orlagh is concentrating on the more traditional aspects of Irish dance and believes their youthful advantage will see them prevail. ‘I definitely believe our youthful enthusiasm will give us an edge over our rivals.’ she said. Paul McGranaghan & Catherine Sweeney
Recently graduated student, Sion native Michael is one of the more acrobatic individuals in the group. From what we have seen in rehearsals, this pair is intending to attempt Strabane native Paul is a Civil Servant and some adventurous choreography - or maybe part time Bookmaker. He has been keen to
participate in fund raising for the Foyle Hospice since the death of his father more than 3 years ago. Paul says he is really enjoying the dancing and the challenge he is being set. He is however struggling with his stamina and Catherine has been keeping him on his toes in order to increase his fitness levels. A student at Queens University, Belfast Catherine is from Aghyaran and has been involved with Irish dancing all her life. An exceptionally talented dancer who has won numerous titles at home & abroad, Catherine continues to compete at the highest level. She has her work cut out to get Paul through an entire routine without collapsing but believes her experience will help them win through. ‘I may come across as a tough task master’ added Catherine ‘but in the
long run it is for Paul’s own good. He really needs to work on his fitness so I have recommended a stringent diet and training regime over the course of the past few weeks!’
The Strabane Herald is proud to support
Strictly Jigs & Reels Wishing the organisers and cotestants all the best for the big night!

It recently enjoyed a very successful Hallowe’en period. Proprietor, Doreen McGarrigle, says that the farm springs into a special kind of life at Christmas. “The children can write letters or draw pictures for Santa Claus to let him know what they want from him on Christmas Eve,” Doreen said. “They can then post them in his special post box. Better still, they can visit Santa in his grotto where he will have a Christmas present for each of them. You can also see our real life animal Nativity Scene and visit Santa’s reindeer and all our other animals on the farm. All activities are indoors so come along whatever the weather! I would advise you and the kids to wrap up warm, although most areas are heated this year.”
The farm boasts many animal attractions and caters for groups. Located in the picturesque green hills of Donemana, Barrontop Fun Farm is perfect for a Christmas day out. With a large range of animals (including some more exotic animals), an adventure playground, an indoor heated soft play area, a bouncy castle and cart rides, there is something for everyone to enjoy. There are also picnic areas and a tearoom. Christmas festivities are now underway and continue until December 23. For more details telephone: 028 71 398649

Under the Spotlight The Strabane Herald caught up with a Strabane Football icon earlier this month to find out a bit about the man known as ‘Scaldy’… John Roulston that is!
Strabane Athletic’s John ‘Scaldy’ Roulston
Who is your favourite past / present footballer? Past would be Zinedane Zidane not only a class name but an unbelievable player. Having played for Juventus, Real Madrid and France, he won everything there was to win in football, scoring magnificiant goals on the way. Present has to be the great Lionel Messi. A genius in his profession, the ball is glued to his feet. A master of the dribble and scores an odd wonder goal or two as well. Who do you think is/was the greatest footballer to grace the field? In my opinion, that would be Messi. There has been some great players over the years including Pele, Maradona and Zinedane to name a few but it must be a dream to have Messi in your team. I would like to see him being more influential in the international stage but he can be forgiven for that as long as he keeps creating wonders for Barcelona.
What age are you? 32 years young What is your occupation? Labourer / Painter & Decorator What football team do you support? Five times European Champions, Liverpool FC - Y.N.W.A
What goal do you consider to be the best ever? That would have to be Maradona’s wonder solo strike against England in the 1/4 finals of the 1986 World Cup. Only the English will concentrate on the “hand of god” goal but everyone else talks about his second. Messi scored a similar one for Barca but this was a World Cup 1/4 final. It was also voted The Goal of the Century. You made the transformation from goalkeeper to centre forward at a young age, What, if any, was the reasoning behind this change? I suffered a hand injury whilst doing goals and was ask to fill in up front for a local team
I played with back then. I jumped at the chance as I got to play alongside my older brother Glen (Reaker), who many believed, including himself was the best left footed forward in the town at the time. He still thinks he is amazingly!
last fixture to become top goalscorer and clinch the title for the club would have to be the most satisfying.
Who is/was the best player you have played with and against in your footballing career? That’s an easy one as it’s the same person. He is my current assistant manager with Strabane Athletic, Gary ‘Shubert’ McGettigan. A very fit and competitive player who was extremely hard in the tackle.
That would have to be Irvinestown Wanderers and Killen Rangers. Although we’re currently going through a dip in form we do hope to get back onto a winning trail and will do everything we can to obtain consecutive promotions.
What in you footballing career do you consider to be your greatest achievement? Scoring a hat-trick against Culmore to gain Mourne Harps promotion into the NW Saturday Morning Premier League. I still have the ‘Roulston gets Harps promoted’ cut-outs from the local press Who in your opinion do you consider to be the best player in SAFC and why? That would have to be our club captain, John Donaghey. He leads by example, always attends training and gives 100% on and off the field. He likes to think he’s got great feet but as long as he sticks to defending and scoring the odd goal he will continue to be a great player for the club in the years ahead. You topped the goal scoring charts for SAFC last season. What goal(s) would you consider to be your best/most satisfying and why? I couldn’t name an individual goal as my best but the 5 I scored against Lisnarick in our
Who do you consider to be SAFC’s main challengers to a promotion push this season?
What is the story/history behind your nickname ‘Scaldy’? As far as I know it was passed on by my brother Glen. My uncles came up with it for him at a young age and like most nicknames in Strabane they usually get past down through family members. As for the reasoning behind it, I would need to have words with my uncles! What is your personal goals target this season? I scored 16 goals last year and currently have 7 this season. I have a wager on with Shubert that I will beat last years total so 17 will do for now! Last but not least, who do you consider to be the joker, moaner, pretty boy, wannabe, hardest, fastest and slowest in SAFC? OK the, Doc or Shubert, The Kenyan or myself, Pollock, Devine or Taylor, Richie or Loguey, Taylor or Raver, Mazzy or Bob - no further comment!

Joiners take centre stage for Strabane panto Strabane’s Alley Theatre’s new pantomime by Puddle Alley Theatre Group ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’ taking place from Friday 13th – Saturday 21st January is receiving the creative treatment from local young apprenticeships thanks to a unique project between the Playhouse Theatre, Derry, The Alley Theatre and CRAFT Recruitment and Training. Over the coming weeks North West joiners will not only be designing and building a new set for the upcoming pantomime but will also be designing and have already built a new Santa’s Grotto currently on show in Strabane Community Library. The project, sponsored by the Department of Social Development (DSD), will assist stu-
dents in completing their qualifications for their training course. Max Beer, Playhouse coordinator, said: “The Santa’s Grotto and the Pantomime Set will be a great project for the trainees to work on we are all very excited about the outcome. Over the few weeks the trainees will be building models of the set design to flesh out the
details a bit more. This is essential as they will gain more of an understanding of the look and feel of the show’ commented Director of Puddle Alley Theatre Group Aodh McCay “We are delighted to be working on this project. This project will give the trainees a host of new joinery skills as well as developing their creativity throughout the whole design and production process which they can later use in the workplace” added Seamus Nealis, managing director of CRAFT Recruitment and Training. John Kerr, Alley Theatre Manager, added: “The Alley Theatre and Strabane District Council is delighted to be associated with this project and thank you to CRAFT recruitment for their ongoing support in developing
the arts within the Alley. The next ten weeks is not only going to be exciting for the trainees but also for us as we will be keeping a photo diary of the design process to see the set and Santa’s grotto being designed from start to finish. The trainees will be working with a professional set designer, investigating the design process, evaluating the best materials to use and discussing the design brief with the panto director Aodh McCay and Arts Development Officer Jean Smith.” For more information about the Alley panto ‘Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves’ running from January 13th to Saturday 21st contact the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444. Clothes discovery gives fresh hope The discovery of the clothes of a missing 22-year-old Lifford man not seen since May has given his family fresh hope that he may be safe. David Colhoun has not been seen since he escaped from police custody in Strabane. Extensive searches have been carried out along the River Foyle and River Mourne following his disappearance. The man’s father, Joe Colhoun said he found David’s trousers and boxer shorts by the banks of the Mourne. “It doesn’t prove anything but it gives us a wee bit of hope. “We’ll start all over again now on Saturday morning with a massive search between the two bridges to see if we can find him. “We know he’s there now because those are his clothes.” A hi-tech scanner proved unsuccessful in the search for the missing Lifford man. It was the first time the equipment has been used in the Northwest. The 22-year-old has not been seen since escaping from police custody after being arrested for minor offences in Strabane in May. Hundreds of locals, Gardai, the PSNI, Foyle Search and Rescue, the Civil Defence and Searching for the Disappeared have all helped in the search over the past six months. John Wolf, Chairman of Mallow Search and Rescue in County Cork, who brought the hi-tech device to help in the search, said finding anything was a long shot, but it was worth a try.

Strabane Gamers Wait ‘Till The Midnight Hour! Local gamers descended upon Xtravision in Strabane last month awaiting the much anticipated release of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’. As is now the norm for the games franchise, Xtravision opened its doors at the stroke of midnight November 8 and the gamers, queuing for at least an hour in advance, joyfully picked up their copy. For many it was the beginning of a long night of virtual battle as they prepared to negotiate the multiple challenges of the game when returning home. Just after purchasing his copy, local gamer Gary Shields told the ‘Herald’: “The maps and layout of this game look very impressive. I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into it and I can see this being a late night, maybe 4am!” Fellow gamer Josh McLaughlin told us of his high hopes for the game. “It has the same games engine as ‘Modern Warfare 2’ so that’s definitely a plus as far as I’m concerned. I’m really looking forward to playing it,” he explained. Meanwhile, Gary Kee and Paul Moore came in all the way from Killygordon to purchase their copies and as the ‘Herald’ spoke to them in the store we couldn’t help but notice that they had stocked up on food for the night. “Fanta bought and Doritos at the ready,” laughed Gary. “We’re ready for a late one tonight. I booked tomorrow off work way in advance because I knew I’d be up all night playing the game. I can’t wait! It should be the best of the ‘Modern Warfare’ series so far,” he added. The game’s publisher, Activision Blizzard, has claimed that in the US and UK alone, ‘Modern Warfare 3’ sold over 6.5 million units within 24 hours of its midnight launch, raising £250 million in sales revenues. The figures are based on data from Charttrack as well as customer sell-through information.
Look at all the happy faces of local gaming fanatics, they all couldn’t wait to get their hands on the World’s most anticipated game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. They turned up in their droves before midnight to Xtravision, Strabane to wait for the release of the game.
Meanwhile, Justin Arkinson of Xtravision in Strabane has since told the ‘Herald’ that the midnight opening was a major success. “We opened from midnight to 1am and the queue simply didn’t end. We then opened later that morning again at 8am and we were equally as busy. Copies of the game were simply flying out the door!”

Over 30 Info Screens, 5 Large Live Action Screens & Touchscreen Technology
MASSIVE FACELIFT SEES TOOT’S GET EVEN BETTER!
Toot’s Bookmakers in Lifford is promising it’s customers the best punting experience possible following it’s recent revamp. The popular local bookies underwent a facelift last month and now offers top of the range facilities. A sizeable investment has seen the outlet almost treble it’s number of information screens to over 30, as well as installing five new picture screens to bring you all the live action. Damien Connolly, manager of Toots, said the refurbishment makes for a more comfortable experience: “The place is much bigger and more spacious, so there’s much more comfort.
The new technologies we have means we’re offering a modern, state-of-the-art service.” Damien explained that with all the new improvements, Toots is now ahead of all it’s competitors: “This is the place to come to if you’re going to be placing bets over the Christmas holiday period. This is always a busy time of year for football action, and of course we have plenty of big races over Christmas as well.” “We’re offering five times the odds for a Lucky 15 bet, whereas other bookies are paying two or three times the odds, so that’s another big incentive to get here. We also offer guaranteed prices in all races.” There’s only one place to do your betting this Christmas…Toot Takes All Bookmakers.
TOOT & HIS STAFF WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY CHRISTMAS & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR
