practitioner. The fundus camera to me has to be the best development as not only do we get a photo of the back of a patients eye but can compare photos to previous ones taken by the practice, making any change easier to pick up.’ In store the practice also has a digital mirror. This is a camera which takes a photo of the patient wearing frames and then lets them see it with their own specs on. ‘We often had patients who complained they could not see the frames they were choosing as they were not yet made up to their correct power’ Wendy Hamilton, Practice Manager tells us ‘This helps the patient choose what really suits them.’ Recently D McGovern Opticians had a Silhouette Aesthetics Day. Pauline Voce a ‘colour me beautiful’ trained frame style consultant with over 20 years experience in the industry was invited over to Ireland by the practice. Patients booked for the day had one to one consultations with Pauline to choose their perfect frame. ‘We were delighted with the feed back we had. The patient all thought Pauline was great with excellent advice given in choosing the frame that suited them best’ Wendy Hamilton says. ‘We will definitely be getting Pauline back in the near future.’ Anyone who wishes to see Pauline on her next visit to D McGovern Opticians Strabane can call for details at the practice 20 Castle Street, Strabane or phone (028) 71882506.

Council calls for more community groups to participate Strabane District Council has launched the 2011 Best Kept Awards Competition organised to encourage communities to take an interest in enhancing their environment. The launch coincided with a series of award presentations to the winners of the Council’s ‘Best Kept Awards’ competition 2010. Last years winners were: Ardstraw, for Best Kept Village; Dunowen Park, Clady, for Best Kept Housing Estate (1-20 houses); Bellscourt, Clady, for Best Kept Housing Estate (1-50 Houses); Urney Court, Clady, for Best Kept Housing Estate (51 plus houses); Bessy Bell Court, Newtownstewart, for Best Kept Sheltered Housing; Spar Shop, Ardstraw, for Best Kept Commercial Property; Bell’s Tractors, Newtownstewart, for Best Kept Industrial Property; Fountain Street Community Association, Strabane, for Voluntary Community Property. Strabane Council Chairman, Councilor Brian McMahon, who presented the awards, said that the competition was designed to encourage communities and individual businesses to raise aware-
ness of environmental improvements and the profile of their area. He then called on Community and Development groups to get involved this year, highlighting a number of the benefits in doing so. “Council endeavor to provide street cleansing, grounds maintenance and horticultural displays throughout the district within a limited budget but with some community participation this can be greatly enhanced. The Council’s Technical Services Department have written to 87 Community and Development groups in the District informing them of the competition and I would encourage all groups to submit entries for this year’s competition, which can be obtained by contacting the Technical Services Department on 028 71 381316. The Council wrote to all Community/Development groups and only received seven applicants, so please submit an application as your entry may be a winner this year. Council can assist groups with the provision of subsidised window boxes and assist with designs and supply of bedding plants if any community is interested in developing floral beds,” added the Council Chairman.

By Kevin McAnena Chances are, very few of you will even know anything about the humanitarian mission, but one Strabane man has been centrally involved in making it happen. Felim Egan, brought up in Strabane, and now living in Dublin, is an artist of considerable renown. Despite a relatively low profile in his hometown, he has been a member of Aosdána (an association of elite Irish artists who’s membership is invitation only) for over 20 years, has represented Ireland at major international art festivals, and has had his work exhibited around the world. He also has a social conscience – an attribute less celebrated by critics, but equally important. Observing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Felim and a number of other artists decided they would begin to take whatever action they could. At his point it might be worthwhile outlining the nature of the situation in the Gaza Strip - around 1.5 million Palestinians live in an area just 40km long and 10km wide. To put that into perspective, it’s a much bigger population than the whole of Northern Ireland, but squeezed into an area smaller than County Louth. Almost all their borders are controlled by an extremely hostile Israeli government, which has for years blockaded the region. The people there have extremely limited access to food, clean water, electricity and medical care, and rely heavily on foreign aid. With this in mind, Felim and his colleagues decided to mobilise themselves: “There was an artist boycott which over 200 artists signed up to last August,” he explained. “That was a pledge to say that we would not exhibit, or contribute to, or accept any funding from, the Israeli government until such times as they adhered to international human rights laws. I was then approached by a few of the directors of a flotilla. Fintan Lane asked me about fundraising, and the possibility of an art auction as a way to fundraise and help the scheme.” Felim then came up with the idea to select four artists and make a hand-made print. Along with artists Bobby Ballagh, Guggi and Pat Harris they launched the print initiative three months ago in Dublin, and so far they’ve been delighted with the response. “I don’t want to politicise anything because there is no political agenda. There’s a humanitarian agenda,” he stressed. “The art campaign is to raise funds. I think there is an awareness in Ireland that there is a flotilla at the end of June, and obviously the Irish were involved in the previous flotilla of last year and
that got fairly good coverage. The point of the flotilla is two-fold. One is to bring humanitarian aid, which they say they will allow into Gaza. And the other is to raise awareness of what exactly the situation is, and just how bad it is in Gaza,” he said. Personal experience of the Middle East has given Felim an insight into the state of play in the region, and seeing the situation for himself has obviously motivated him to continue to support the people there. “I have travelled extensively in the Middle East,” he said. “My last two trips were to Lebanon and to Syria. The reason I went to Lebanon is because I have been supporting a couple of children for several years to help with their education, and they live in one of the Palestinian camps there. So I saw first hand just how bad the situation was and poor these people are, and beleaguered they are.” He continued: “They have an identity but they don’t have an actual passport, they don’t have any nationality. Even within the Lebanon they still have to live within these camps. Gaza is very similar in that sense (to the camps) – not allowed to enter by land or sea, this has been illegally imposed by the Israeli government.” Felim, now in his late 50s, admits growing up in Strabane at the outbreak of the troubles has shaped his outlook on the middle-east situation somewhat. He was in his late teens when war broke out here in 1969, and those sorts of experiences tend to stay with receptive young minds. “I’ve always had an interest in Middle East affairs; it came through an interest in Islamic art. But I think having been brought up in Strabane with the strife, the sectarianism, the bigotry, the corruption, the beginnings of a war – having been brought up with that I have a certain empathy with people that find themselves in similar circumstances. Fortunately we’re now finding a way out and we’re finding a nonviolent solution, and I think Ireland could have a lot to offer in that sense.” He left the town to study in Belfast at the age of 18, having received his schooling at Barrack Street Primary School, and later at St Colman’s High School, via a four year stint at St Columb’s College in Derry. After eight years in London, Felim returned to Belfast to teach in his late 20s for a short time before settling in Dublin. His work is characteristically abstract, having been influenced by early 20th century artists like Paul Cézanne, Paul Clay and Wassily Kandinsky - “I found I was very attracted to the way they handled colour, shapes, and yet the paintings were all about emotion, and more than what they appeared on the surface.” His portfolio of work has earned no shortage of plaudits down the years, and a cursory glance of his website (www.felimegan.ie) will outline his many achievements. That said, his current project is as vital as anything he’s ever done – so if you want to have a look at what Irish Art 4 Gaza do, and possibly buy some of their work, log on to www.irishart4gaza.com today.

Boyle welcomes expansion of Small Business Rates Relief Scheme
Beauty Salon Ballyduff, Lifford (beside grayhound track)
074 9142941 or (00353 74 NI)
Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle says the wheels are now firmly in motion at the Assembly Executive to extend the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme for a further three years and to increase by over 50% the numbers of businesses eligible for such relief under the scheme. She said, “The expansion of the Rates Relief Scheme is essential to secure the sustainability of our smaller businesses and particularly those in our town centres- businesses that are struggling to survive in conditions whereby they are attempting to compete against the transnational companies
yet having to shoulder a disproportionate and crippling rates burden. “Sinn Féin has been lobbying for the existing Rates Relief Scheme to be expanded for some time arguing that this expansion be funded by introducing a levy on the out of town ‘big multiples’. ‘The core proposal in the options paper now before the Assembly Executive is to levy those large retailers that have a combined turnover of £100 billion per annum in order to finance the expansion of the Small Business Rates Relief Scheme. “With almost certain Executive support consultation will shortly begin on these proposals with final decisions being reached in the autumn for implementation in April next year.”

Re-elected Ulster Unionist Strabane Councillor, Derek Hussey, has welcomed the Western Education and Library Board’s agreement to co-operate with Strabane District Council in the provision of a Multi Use Games Area at Newtownstewart Primary School. Strabane District Council had expressed a willingness to enter into a licence agreement for the Games Area on the School site and the School’s Board of Governors had given their approval to the scheme. At it’s Board meeting last month the WELB approved the scheme which will see Newtownstewart Primary School pupils have use of the Games Area through the school day during term time whilst Council will manage Community use in the evenings, at weekends, school holiday periods and cover any necessary maintenance
costs for the site. Funding to create the Multi Use Games Area has been granted by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Councillor Hussey, who also represents Strabane District Council on the Western Education and Library Board, said “This is a very sensible scheme allowing the welcome provision of a multi use games facility in Newtownstewart which will be available to the wider community outside of school hours. I have long maintained that school facilites should be more available for wider community use rather than lie dormant when our schools are closed. Naturally, for this to happen, oversight of such use has to be in place and Council are taking on this role creating a win/win position for all in the Newtownstewart area.”
Strabane Fair Day this weekend! From front page... The Fair Day is always an ideal opportunity to showcase community arts and throughout the afternoon the finest in Strabane Dance, Music and Drama will on display. There will also be a Dog Show courtesy of Bark to Basics. The Fair Day’s Fringe Events begin on Friday evening, June 24, with Blenny, The Water Daughter – a school’s art exhibition in the Alley Theater Gallery, while downstairs there will be a launch of the long-awaited Strabane Uncovered CD at 7.15pm. All of this will take place just before the Grand Final of Sounds Like Summer 2011, which will commence in the main theatre at 8pm. Opening Hours 4.30p.m to 11.30p.m 7 days
The Fringe events continue on the Saturday with ‘A Tale of a Light House Keeper’ at 2.30pm in Strabane Library – a special 45 minute event suitable for six year-olds and up. And finally, to top off a highly eventful day, rich in culture and variety, the Alley Theatre will be hosting a Fair Day Ceili and Old Time Dance on the Saturday night, commencing at 9pm. It will be an ideal opportunity to catch up with old friends or meet some new ones, and enjoy a night to remember in the main theatre, which will have the seats removed to accommodate for the open space requirements for such an event. Tickets cost £5 and it’s certain to be the perfect conclusion to what is building up to be a very special day on June 25.

5 facts about Acupuncture 1
Acupuncture started in China two thousand years ago and it has propagated all over the world ever since then. A whole lot has accepted its relevance, not just for eastern traditional medicine, but also in the western world.
5
Testimonials SHOULDER AND ACUTE PAIN
Since acupuncture theory believes in the concept of being one, the patient’s body is believed to have different systems or parts but are mutually connected and they are not exclusive to each other. This belief emphasizes that once a part of the system malfunctions, the other parts also suffers.
2 It uses acupuncture needles as one of the many tools being used by an acupuncturist during treatments. A lot of people have preconceived notions when it comes to needles but these are extremely fine ones that less or no pain can be felt during the session.
3 Not only does it help to cure common sickness, some evidence even supports that this can be another option in healing serious medical conditions.
4 Acupuncture can also prevent an individual from
getting sick or acquiring diseases. This one is the advantage of acupuncture over those other medical healing methods.
“It is pretty well documented through scientific studies that Acupuncture can be very helpful in relieving things like migraines and other ailments”.
‘For the past 2 weeks I had been in pain with aching shoulder. The pain was travelling down my left arm. It made even the simple task of brushing my hair extremely painful. After taking painkillers for 2 weeks I decided to try Dr. Shi’s Clinic in Strabane. After a few sessions my pain is gone and the herbs which the Chinese doctor gave me make me feel uplifted and more energetic. I would recommend it to anyone’ - Etta
NEURALGIA
‘I have been taking strong pain relief tablets, and have also been to the hospital. It was suggested to have an operation which would have left my face in numbness forever. Fortunately, this did not happen, as a friend suggested acupuncture and acupressure. I found it helpful. After 12 treatment sessions in Dr. Shi’s Strabane clinic, I was able to speak, eat and smile without my face going into a severe spasm of pain’ - Mrs. G. Hill
- President Barrack Obama
NERVIOUS DISORDER/ FATIGUE
‘I have been through chemotherapy 3 times and was feeling very fatigued and not sleeping well at night. After visiting Dr. Shi’s Clinic in Strabane I was treated on my immune system and my sleep by their amazing natural therapy. I can’t believe how well I am feeling and I am back to sleeping normal again. Thank you. Dr. Shi’
HABITUAL MISCARRAGE/ INFERTILITY
‘I have been married for over nine years, and always was dreaming to have a child— the outcome of our love. I tried many years and only got increasingly broken heart with three miscarriages. Last year, I decided to attend the Chinese medicine treatments at Dr. Shi’s Clinic. Three months later I was pregnant safely. I am so glad I now have a cute baby. Proud to be a new mum and a big thank you to Dr. Shi’s team’ - Teresa Lurgan

Have you tried our famous Sunday Carvery Experience? 5 Course Sunday Carvery Served 12.30pm - 3pm every Sunday As an establishment where charm, comfort and hospitality are evident from the moment one enters the front door, Kee’s Hotel and Leisure Club has continued to evolve yet maintain the character that has made it one of the premier family hotels in Ireland. One of the many irresistible pull factors to the Donegal venue, located on the main road in Stranorlar, is their delicious Five Course Sunday Carvery, which is served in the Admiran Suite from 12.30pm - 3pm. On arrival, we immediately found comfort in seeing that all the starters and desserts remain fresh in Kee’s specialised chilled cabinets throughout the luncheon period. The Admiran Suite was a lively hub of activity and the atmosphere was just what one hopes for on a Sunday afternoon – friendly and relaxed. The Suite is sized to cater for large crowds to such an extent that movement is never compromised, and we could freely manoeuvre and take in the delights on offer. The staff are polite, accommodating and willing to assist with any query, no matter how trivial. As we
found a table with great ease, despite the large numbers present, we were greeted with bowls of homemade soup rich with flavour. It was a pleasant surprise and a welcomed treat ahead other courses, which we could then choose for ourselves. On this particular visit we had in our company two Vegetarian friends, which is always a concern when entering any dining or carvery vicinity. Thankfully, such concerns are unwarranted at Kee’s Hotel with an impressive variety of Vegetarian options available. For a starter, the salad bar is particularly colourful, with a rich variety of mixed salads. One of our fellow diners enthused greatly about the smoked salmon, pâté and olives that they opted for. After savouring those delights it was on to the main carvery consisting of a rich selection of baby roast
potatoes, turkey, prime beef, pork and gammon, which took the fancy of the majority of our company, while the rest opted for - and enthused greatly about – the Yorkshire puds, creamy mash, cabbage and mashed carrot and turnip with the addition of a gravy simply dripping with flavour. For a few in our company, this was more than enough. Filled to the brim they reluctantly stepped away from the dessert selection, which was rich and varied but simply far too tempting for those of us with a sweet tooth, as we succumbed to the beautiful cream pudding. A chocolate fountain that
would make Willy Wonka green with envy was a magnetic draw for children and adults alike. As it happens, there is also a specially designed Children’s Carvery Area with all your kiddies’ favourite dishes. Simply put – there a little bit of taste heaven there for everyone, and no-one will leave hungry! Sunday Carvery at Kee’s Hotel is priced at €24.95 per adult. Children under nine-years-old are free and children between the ages of 10 and 13 are €5.00 each. The location and atmosphere and delights on offer make it a Sunday worth coming back for again and again.

Castle Street to come alive with a nostalgic early 1900’s theme
Times past at Strabane Fair Day Council’s Annual Civic Event Strabane Fair kicks off this Friday evening 24th June at 7.15pm in the Alley Theatre with launch of the Strabane Uncovered CD which highlights the talent of local musicians. This is the final project supported by the North West Cluster Special European Union Programme Peace III funding. Running alongside the launch at 8pm is the finale of the Sounds like Summer bands competition. This year the Strabane Fair day will take a more nostalgic theme- we are travelling back in time to the early1900’s and our castle street will come alive with re-enactments facilitated by the Ulster American Folk Park .We hope that you will come along to support and encourage the various professional and community showcases taking place in Castle Street, the Courtyard and the Canal Basin throughout the day. We would be delighted if people would get into character and dress in Victorian costume and there will be spot prizes for best dressed character on the day. Workshops have been on going in the various schools and the children will be performing short pieces on the street and in the Canal basin through out the afternoon. All the children have been enthusiastic in practising their new skills in music or dance routines, so please come along and show your support. A number of workshops took place during the
district in the Spring, funded under the SEUBP Peace III, so there will be performance and demonstrations from these throughout the Saturday afternoon.
Farmer’s Market On Saturday the Farmer’s market will operate from the Canal Basin from early morning while in the Alley Courtyard, they will be joined later by local crafters and local restaurateurs from the Strabane District. Many of the Crafts people are showcasing their handmade crafts for the first time and they will be joined by the Women’s Institute showing traditional baked fayre in the Alley court yard during the afternoon. There will also be demonstrations of traditional building crafts and music so something to attract all ages and interests will be offered The main event performance in Castle street is a living history piece performed by the staff from the Ulster American Folk Park who will remind us of the colourful folks who use to frequent town fair days years ago so be prepared for some lively banter as they reflect on past eras. As the origin fairs were linked to the farming community we also have an agricultural link with static display of an

Strabane and District Playclub to launch Charity Golf Classic Strabane and District Playclub are to launch their first major fund raising campaign with a golf classic event at Strabane Golf Club on August 7. The changes at the North West College have meant that the group will have to move to a new site and their aim is now to provide a bigger service to the Strabane District through this eventual relocation.
Winner of the T.S Oscar Rollins Open was Brian Miller with Runner up Cyril Downey
Enda Kennedy gross winner and Jimmy Coyle prize winners in the T.S Oscar Rollins open.
The golf classic event will be just one of a number events devised to help the group raise the funds. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, Amanda Humphrey outlined the group’s objectives and highlighted the positive impact they have had within the community. “The funding that would be raised from events like the golf classic will go towards helping us redevelop and relocate as the North West College are redeveloping and we have to move to a new site. Our aim is to provide of bigger classroom facility, therefore giving us the chance to offer an even better service. “At present, we are an voluntary nonprofit organisation and provide an out of school service to forty families. We are a cross community and cross border organisation and regularly
take referrals from social services and health visitors to help families who are in need of respite. “With us, the children learn to respect one another and to respect their community through their play environment. We promote healthy eating and physical activity on a daily basis and encourage the children to become independent. We value the importance of play, health and fitness among our young people,” Amanda explained. Strabane and District Playclub provide this service for working parents, lone parents and students all year round. They are affordable for parents to enable them to continue working or to return to work. Presently, they are the only playcare service of this kind in the Strabane area. The group has received numerous
awards for the provision of service they provide. They are the only organisation in Northern Ireland to have received the Cultural Diversity Award three years running. They were also awarded first place for Tyrone by the Health Promotion Board for the work they do with the children in promoting and providing a varied programme of physical activities and healthy eating on a regular basis. Their positive impact has resulted in their group leader being awarded Playworker of the year for Northern Ireland. Amanda Humphrey is hopeful that the golf classic with be strongly supported. “We would be grateful to any business if they would consider sponsoring a tee for that day; your business will be advertised on that tee on the day of the tournament,” she added. Prior to the golf classic, a table quiz will also be held in the Fir Trees on Thursday, June 30 at 9.30pm, with all funds raised going towards the Playclub’s charity campaign.

Three Kings Strabane has always been the ideal blank canvas for its musicians, as they freely indulge in their own preferred genre or style. A border town too often bypassed both literally and metaphorically, it is that very outsider quality that has given Strabane’s sons and daughters an artistic bite exclusive to the town. It’s why Punk, Rock, Metal, Dance and yes, even Country and Western, fits Strabane like a glove. Expressions of anger, discontent, wonder, romance, victory and loss have for a long time echoed through this valley, and now Strabane Rappers, or ‘Strappers’, are lashing their own lyrical paint brush across the historic canvas. The rise in home-grown Hip-Hop music in Strabane owes a great deal to three main players: Gerard McDaid aka Gerardi2; Danny Houston aka HC; Stephen Mills aka Mr Mills. On June 24, all three artists will be hosting and performing at a special night in Katy Dalys, where Gerardi2’s latest album will also be launched – the long awaited follow-up to his explosive debut ‘2 Dirt 4 The Radio’. The gig will be a continuation of the growing fascination that a local audience has for homegrown Hip-Hop. All three lads have positively utilised the internet and home recording systems by sharing their music on the World Wide Web, while staying to regular contact with their community of peers and followers to such an extent that they are quickly becoming just about the hottest ticket in town at present. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, all three lads looked back on how they developed their own personal slant on Hip-Hop. For Mr Mills, the development didn’t take much dwelling over. “It was just something I wanted to do,” he insists. “I’ve always listened to all kinds of music but rap music struck a chord with me. I began looking at my brother’s records and one of the bands I discovered was NWA. I really got into it and as I got older I began to get the lyrics. I was inspired to try some-
thing similar. I can’t sing. I can’t play an instrument but I love to write words and rap. It’s that simple. That effective!” Like Mr Mills, Gerardi2’s penchant for rapping was born out of a love for words. “I started writing lyrics when I was about 13, but I wasn’t much of a musician or a singer and at 13 you don’t really have a lot to say about life,” he laughs. “I was a big fan of Garage at the time but then got into Eminem. I liked his style and what he was about. I tried to do something similar but I didn’t like my accent. Then I began to mix the rapping with the Garage stuff I was listening to. With the tempo raised I was able to put my own signature on it. So far it has worked very well.” HC began recording Hip-Hop music while he was still in his early teens. “I was always listening to people like Tupac, who was a major influence, and Eminem. Like anyone else who is influenced by an artist, you feel inspired to do something yourself, so I began to write and record my own stuff from as far back as 2002, when I was still at school. Soon, ‘Millsey’ and me began rapping together as The Lost Souls,” he explains. The Lost Souls were, for many, Strabane’s introduction to home-grown Hip-Hop. Even in their teens, the duo of HC and Mr Mills rapped honestly about teenage life in a small town. While there was definitely a spirited energy in what they did, some in Strabane were still not ready for the culture shock. “We definitely got a bit of stick when we started,” laughs HC. “I was getting called a Tupac wannabe and ‘Millsey’ was an Eminem wannabe. It was probably a bit odd for some people because Rap music was something they always associated with somewhere else.” “Thankfully things have changed over the past few years,” adds Mr Mills. “For example, I’m a fan of Jamie T. I like the way he does his own slurry London thing when he raps. A few years ago that too would’ve been looked on as strange but Rap and Hip-Hop has evolved and is a global thing now. Even here in Ireland, the scene is growing. We’re definitely a

lot more accepted now than we were when we started.” The Hip Hop nights across Strabane have been generating bigger audiences each night. What makes them particularly exciting is that all the rappers perform their own material and do so in their own dialect. While the origins of Hip Hop lie elsewhere, there is no doubting the indigenous quality in what Gerardi2, HC and Mr Mills do.
ing but you still get a bit embarrassed too it must be said,” he blushes. While many an Irish artist still insists on singing in an accessible mid-Atlantic accent devoid of any trace of themselves, rapping in their own accents is a vital ingredient to the music of the Strabane rappers, according to Mr Mills. “There’s a line in my song ‘Let Me Be Me’ that goes: ‘your accent’s crap – but if I was to change then my action isn’t rap’ and that’s something I strongly believe in. You “It was something fresh and I don’t think too have to be true to yourself; even if you’re covmany people in Strabane had seen something ering a song I think you should put your own like this done in the town before, especially personal twist on it.” in a local sense because we write about our lives and experiences,” explains Gerardi2. All three rappers have been continually “I think that’s why it has a positive impact – recording and uploading their music online. because people know we’re genuine and that Mr Mills’ recent EP ‘The Real Me’ has become we’re just everyday people like them, writing an internet hit across the social networks and about the things we do from day to day, which both Gerardi2 and HC have new material on is basically the same as what they’re doing the way and the buzz around the gigs continues to grow. “It’s great to see people actually too.” coming to the gigs,” says Gerardi2. “We’ve While the energy of the Hip-Hop nights is played to packed houses in Katy’s, Diceys a major plus, having something to say is and the Pool Bar. THE LIGHT OF A NEW BEGINNING 3TRABANElS TOP NITE SPOT
June 17, 1994 – the day ‘Reality’ TV was born? Do you remember where you were on June 17, 1994? For sporting fans from all walks of life it proved to be a day of major significance. The golfing fraternity shed a tear as 65-year-old legendary figure of the game, Arnold Palmer, played his last round at a US Open, in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. New York’s ice-hockey fans shed tears also as the Rangers ended a 54-year Stanley Cup drought and brought the cup back for an emotionally charged parade on Broadway. At Madison Square Gardens, the New York Nicks were battling it out with the Houston Rockets in Game Five of the NBA finals. In Chicago, Diana Ross was famously striking a most un-supreme penalty-kick during the opening ceremony for the FIFA World Cup. Basically, the whole spectrum of sport vied for the television viewer’s attention. Meanwhile, as all this was happening, it was the actions of a former footballing legend turned actor that had both the audiences and the networks hooked. O.J. Simpson was taking a drive with his old team-mate, Al Cowlings, in his white Ford Bronco around Los Angeles and the world tuned in to watch. People packed bridges they drove under with signs that read ’Go O.J. Go!’. However, O.J. was being pursued by police at the time. He was

armed with a gun and allegedly pointing the gun at both his own and Cowling’s head. Several days before, Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown and her friend, Ronald Goodman, were murdered at Brown’s home and the LAPD had Simpson down as prime suspect. As the chase down the freeway continued, the world observed in shock. What was unfolding was no episode of ‘Starsky and Hutch’ or ‘Dukes of Hazard’, but a real-life car-chase featuring one of the most famous figures in US popular culture – an all-American hero suspected of murdering his ex-wife and her friend. O.J. Simpson was at one time the biggest draw in American Football and on
June 17, 1994, he was once again the biggest show in town and the rest of the sporting world had to simply take a back seat and join the 95 million viewers and 20 helicopters following Simpson’s Ford Bronco. On US television particularly, all of the major sporting events mentioned above were continually interrupted with the latest from the O.J. pursuit, like the latest scores on a Saturday afternoon. It was an insane moment and something was born that day, something that lingers still. On June 17, 1994, voyeurism, celebrity culture and reality shared a head-on collision with each other and they have languished in the wreckage ever since, simply because the public demand it. An appetite for reality was wetted that day. Why go back to fiction when we could have the real thing? Media seduces and distorts simply by its very existence and the public championing of Simpson as his Ford Bronco slid down the freeway demonstrated how the public, even without thinking, takes ownership of the reality and puts their own spin on it, creating their own heroes and villains along the way. Underneath the bizarre drama that unfolded that day was two brutal murders and numerous families devastated. That tragic reality and the ‘reality’ created around the event became two different things. While networks masqueraded in a veil of
objectivity when reporting the unfolding events, a realisation that this case was going to run for some time certainly influenced the way it was being covered. People like looking in on the rich and famous – that has always been the case, but now they could have the opportunity to see the rich and famous in bizarre situations with plots and sub-plots forming before their eyes. It was only a matter of time before ‘Reality’ programmes like ‘The Osbournes’ beckoned. Soon this wasn’t enough and the rich and famous made way for Joe Public, however things would continue to follow a similar template: from the constant need for a moving or salacious back-story on ‘X-Factor’ or ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, to the manipulative editing of ‘Big Brother’ to accommodate the public need for a hero or pantomime villain. The public wants ‘reality’, but on the public’s terms. It just so happened that the reality of O.J. Simpson’s world on June 17, 1994, didn’t need any manipulating – that happened later. The O.J. Simpson case was a powerful hit for a lot of people and they’ve been demanding that same shot of ‘Reality’ in a TV-screen-sized glass ever since – even if it means making it up. ‘June 17, 1994’ is a documentary by Brett Morgen and is part of ESPN’s ‘30 for 30’ series.

NEW FAMILES NEEDED TO HOST CHERNOBYL CHILDREN It didn’t attract much media attention but this yearw marked 25 years since one of the darkest days in European history. By Kevin McAnena A set of experiments by nuclear technicians to test backup electrical supplies to a reactor resulted in a massive explosion which tore apart the town of Chernobyl in Belarus, releasing tonnes of radiation across much of Europe and killing 31 people in the short term. In the long term it’s estimated that as many as 200,000 people have died as a result of contamination, while many more are permanently disfigured. Dangerous levels of radiation still pollute much of the ground in Belarus and parts of neighbouring Ukraine – scientists estimate that it will be 600 years before it is safe to populate Chernobyl itself again, though the effects of 26 April 1986 will still resound for a staggering 48,000 years. The many health implications for the people of Belarus and Ukraine are too abundant to men-
tion but despite swimming against a colossal tide a number of local people continue to support the children of Chernobyl in their struggle for a better quality of life. One such person is retired Our Lady of Mercy school teacher, Kate Kelly. The Plumbridge woman is a director of Chernobyl Children’s Appeal Northern Ireland, a charity which brings scores of affected children from Belarus and Ukraine to Ireland every summer. Having got involved with the charity in 2000 after seeing other local families host children, Kate became one of the organisation’s six directors five years ago. In light of the recent anniversary she is hoping the eyes of the world can again turn to the plight of so many people who continue to suffer on a daily basis. A short three week visit to Ireland sends the children home rejuvenated and acts as a welcome boost to their health and immune system. Kate remains as enthusiastic as ever about the work her organisation carries out and is always on the lookout for new host families. She explained to The Strabane Herald what the scheme involves. “The children usually come for three weeks in mid-July to the first week in August,” she said. “In total we have 78 new children coming in July
this year, and there are also 13 returnees – those are children than have been here before but host families then fund them to come over themselves, because they want the children to come back. Our policy is to take children that hasn’t been out of Belarus or Ukraine ever before, so should a returnee come that is the financial responsibility of the host family.” She added: “An interpreter comes with each group. They look after them and get them through the airports and that kind of thing. I’ve hosted an interpreter here as well. They visit the families and iron out any wee problems that might arise, and they’re on call 24 hours a day while they are here.” “There’s no real language problem with them, you can put your thumb up or down, you can give signals, and you have a phrasebook that comes in handy. They settle in well and there are no problems with them, and they just love Ireland. It’s a great change for them because Belarus and Ukraine are very flat countries, so here they just love the scenery and the fresh air and the food.” While in Ireland the children meet up in groups at least once a week for various events and activities in their own region, as well as one large Fun Day in Portglenone where everyone comes together. To be involved to the extent Kate is, it’s obviously
something which she finds rewarding. So far she has hosted 10 different children, including some on return visits. Her role as a director involves visiting the villages affected, and carrying out research with the children’s schools and families so that they can be matched with a suitable host family here. “This year’s group come from a very poor area of Ukraine. When we went there we had to get to the village by horse and cart, but I have to say that the people are very hospitable and when they heard we were coming they prepared food and everything for us. Things aren’t going to change for them any time soon, it’s just a fact of daily life for them but it’s important that we continue to help them as much as we can. It’s great to see their wee faces and see how much they appreciate it,” she said. She added: “If anyone is interested it’s only three weeks during the summer and it would be great if anyone could come forward and help to bring another family over. Our group in Omagh meets once a month to organise fundraising and other things, so it’s not difficult to get on board.” To find out more about Chernobyl Children’s Appeal NI, visit their website at www.ccanireland. com, where you can find contact details and other information.

Strabane Herald’s Kevin McAnena met with cricket legend Ossie Colhoun
July 2nd 1969 - The night the West Indies fell in Sion Back in Spring Ireland shocked the sporting world by beating England in the Cricket World Cup – the sort of implausible, plucky underdog story that is usually the preserve of Hollywood sport movies. By Kevin McAnena A fervent passenger of any bandwagon going (have you seen the price of petrol?) we decided to embrace the cricket fever and indulge in some nostalgia. As many locals will recall, this is not the first time Ireland’s cricketers have upset huge odds. In the summer of ‘69 the Irish team overturned the mighty West Indies on Cricket legend our own doorstep. The Ossie Colhoun game in Sion Mills has gone down in Irish cricketing folklore, and in light of their recent triumph, we decided to revisit Ireland’s first act of giant-killing. The West Indies were on a tour of England at the time and came to Ireland for two games against the unfancied Irish outfit. Having just come from a thrilling game at the cricket Mecca, Lords, the Windies (as they are known by cricket fans) were unprepared for what County Tyrone had in store. Legendary Sion Mills cricketer Ossie Colhoun
west on the team. He clocked up 90caps in total, and until recently was the most capped Irish player ever. Having already played for Ireland for 10 years at the time, his service to the Irish Cricket team was most likely the key reason that Sion Mills was chosen as the venue for the high-profile game. Despite their glorious win, there were no grand celebrations for the Irish team. Ossie returned home with a team-mate after the game where his wife made them tea and sandwiches, and that was as extravagant as it got. Ossie also rubbished the rumour that the reason for the West Indies’ poor performance was because the Irish side had got them drunk the night before: The Ireland &West Indies teams pictured together before that famous game back in 1969. “That is complete nonsense because none of the was wicketkeeper on July 2nd 1969, and he told coming flying through off the hard surface. So West Indies players drank.” The Strabane Herald the remarkable story. they arrived here and it had been raining and the As you would expect, Ossie took great pleasure in “The night before I was meeting a couple of boys ball was taking a piece out of the ground, so they seeing the current Irish team defeat England in the on the Irish team and we were in the local pub were playing the shots before the ball actually got World Cup last month, and said he is encouraged having a beer. The people were asking us what we to them. That’s how we got them out.” to see how far cricket has progressed since his own thought would happen and we were saying, “Aw, He added: “At one stage they were 13 for 9 and playing days. the West Indies will get 300 for about 5, and we’ll the last two batsmen almost doubled their score. get about 90. It was a complete miracle,” he said. They were all out for 25. We got it for the loss of “In my day people said ‘Sure no Paddies play “When the West Indies arrived the two captains two wickets as far as I remember, but we battered cricket’. HOW OFTEN DO YOU FEED YOUR DOG? One of the most common questions that I am asked concerning dogs is how much to feed them.
While this seems like a very straightforward question, there are actually some unique circumstances that make this question very difficult to answer. This article will help to explain those circumstances and will help pet owners choose the right amount of food for their canine diet.
The importance of knowing how much dog food to feed
A Vet once had an elderly client that bred and raised Labrador Retrievers. Whenever she brought her dogs in to the clinic he was consistently impressed with the fact that they were always about the perfect weight with beautiful coats and good muscle tone. Finally, one day he asked her what her secret was that allowed her to feed her dogs in such a way that they were always the perfect weight. She thought for a few seconds and then leaned forward and in a serious whisper divulged, “when they are skinny I feed ‘em more and when they get fat I feed ‘em less.” I am still impressed with the simplistic truth of that statement. Despite pet professionals determined efforts to devise a quality canine diet that will tell us exactly how much to feed a dog of a given weight, we still do not have one, and it is very unlikely that we ever will. What that owner displayed was years of experience that allowed her to make slight adjustments in the canine diet to keep her dogs at the perfect weight. Unfortunately, most owners do not have years of experience and hundreds of dogs under their care to allow them to become good at regulating their dogs’
