JULY 2011
‘Rockin’ by the River Festival opens this weekend! The village of Plumbridge is gearing up for the biggest week in the local calendar – the Rockin’ by the River Festival. By Kevin McAnena The annual community festival begins this weekend (Saturday 23rd July) with the much anticipated return of Irish folk/rock heavyweights More Power To Your Elbow. Fast becoming the top summer event in the North-west, thousands will descend on the village for nine days of celebrations. Organisers have extended this year’s event, meaning it now runs over two weekends, with a jam-packed schedule in store for lucky punters. The legendary More Power to Your Elbow are now festival regulars, and they open proceedings on Saturday night. The crèmede-la-crème of local talent then perform on Sunday 24th in the Dome at Glenelly’s Got
Talent. Local stars such as Jim Devine from the All-Ireland Talent Show will be battling it out to take home the top prize of recording time in a top studio. A charity walk, teenage disco, GAA summer camps, Big Bingo, Vintage Rally and a Sunday Fun Day are all also included in the line-up. On Friday 29th July country music star Robert Mizzell appears, after having to cancel at the last minute in 2010 due to unforeseen circumstances. The hugely popular Strictly Come Dancing is always a festival highlight, and demand for this ticket-only event is sure to massive. The weekend will be rounded off with performances from Justin McGurk & The Boogie Men on Saturday (30th July), and Strabane’s own The Pontius Pilots on Sunday (31st July). Also on Saturday 30th July is a special genealogy workshop, where you can get free guidance and advice on how to research your family history or build a family tree. Continued on page 32

Early detection important when it comes to eyesight As we get older our eyes change, in fact they change from the moment you are born. This is a natural process and nearly everyone over 65 needs spectacles. The ageing process can affect eyes in more serious ways. Some of the common problems are:
Glaucoma
SALE

This is caused by the pressure in the eye being too high. The patient is generally unaware of this as the vision gradually gets worse and there is no pain. By the time the patient realises they have a problem the damage to vision will be permanent. Inside your eye is a lens, which with age can cloud over. The patient will notice their vision reducing or going cloudy. This normally happens slowly and is not painful. When vision is significantly affected it is usually treated by a simple operation where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one.
However it does not cause complete blindness. Macular degeneration is usually not treatable however recent advancements means in the early stages there can be some treatment so early diagnosis is critical especially if you have suddenly noticed a change in your vision. Renowned artist Felim Egan was one of 20 Irish citizens on board the MV Saoirse, which was part of a flotilla bringing essential supplies to the beleaguered Middle East region. In last month’s The Strabane Herald Felim said that he didn’t want the trip to become a political issue, and stressed that there was no political agenda. However, their trip was brought to a halt in Turkey when vandals attacked the ship, leaving it impossible to travel on. Speaking to The Strabane Herald from the port of Gocek in southern Turkey, Felim explained how the episode could easily have resulted in multiple deaths. “The damage is very obvious; it seems to have been done maybe with an angle grinder. It’s a very severe cut to the shaft. It wasn’t cut in two, it was left that if we had gone to sea it could have snapped and could have sunk the boat. So our lives were very much in danger.” He added: “There’s at least £20-25,000 worth of damage.” “The skipper took our ship the Saoirse out on a short run around to check the engines and that kind of thing, but they detected there was something wrong. So we had a team of underwater divers come in to inspect it and they told us that there was fairly serious damage to one of the propellor shafts,” he said. No culprits for the sinister attack have been found as yet, but it seems extremely likely that whoever did it was a supporter of the Israeli government at the very least. Ships making up the fleet had been docking at separate ports in a bid to avoid this sort of incident, but to no avail. “It seems fairly obvious that it was probably something to do with the Israeli side,” said Felim. “The damage was exactly the same that was done to the
Swedish ship in Greece. Exactly the same type of cut to the propeller shaft, so that’s now two ships out.” Although the MV Saoirse is now out of action, any aid on board was brought to a larger ship, and will still make its way to Gaza. While the supplies ventured on, Felim explained that, unfortunately, he would have to call an end to his voyage. “Six members of the team have gone to another port hoping to join up with an Italian ship, but there’s no space for us all, so most of the Irish team have had to go home.” He continued: “There is an investigation ongoing. The Turkish authorities are extremely upset because it happened it Turkey. It also happened to an Irish vessel, so the Irish government should also be very concerned. The possibility of a disaster was there, we could have been out at sea and the shaft would have broken. In many ways we’re lucky we detected it at an early stage.” “It’s very disappointing and very frustrating, but we’re going to struggle on because the siege of Gaza is an ongoing situation. What happens to us is very little to what happens to the Palestinians on a daily basis, so we are just seeing a small part of that.”

Festival ticket prices reduced for 2011
BALLYSHANNON FOLK FESTIVAL 2011 The Ballyshannon Folk Festival has been kept alive over 34 years, by being capable of recognising the change in time, and the change in attitude towards patrons attending the Festival. The announcement that Ticket prices are being reduced this year, in line with the recent downturn in the economy, is wise thinking and welcomed by Festival goers.
FRANKIE GAVIN & DE DANNAN
FOUR MEN & A DOG
The line up sees Frankie Gavin and De Dannan, Charlie Mc Gettigan, and Leitrim’s Flute master Dave Sheridan and friends opening on Fri 29th July. Darren Breslin won the ‘All Ireland’ on the Two-row box at the 2008 Fleadh and he brings his band on stage opening Sat 30th. Finbar Furey needs no introduction to Folk followers and the rustic Balladeer shall have them singing along, whether your sweet 16 or not. It’s welcoming to see much talked about Ciorras making an appearence, and their youth and energy will see a lively close to Saturday’s concert. Opening on Sun 31st is the weekend showcase winner [see below] followed by Sarah Mc Quaid. This fine vocalist and songwriter has received rave write ups recently and this will be her first appearence at Ballyshannon. Closing acts have been a speciality at this Festival over the 34 years and the rafters shall get tested once again this year, with 4 Men and a Dog. Over the years they have always delivered a polished riproaring act that leaves the foot tapping patrons wanting more. Well done Ballyshannon you have given the concert goer a choice of 3 great nights. Ticket prices are Fri €25, Sat €30, Sun €30, and with a weekend ticket only €75, value is certainly at hand. Many FREE Street gigs are being added as we go to print. Throw in your many pub sessions, Barn dances, and workshops, and you have a colourful choice for everyone. The aforementioned showcase is a competition event for all types of musicial acts, coming under the Folk and Traditional banner. Building on the success of 2010, the showcase has evolved to become one of the North West’s premier music competitions for young Folk and Traditional Musicians. The event will take place in a specially prepared venue with a fully sound equipped and checked stage, so each act can perform their best, for the audience and judging panel. The entries in 2010 surpassed expectations, and this year has already seen a hugh interest. The Festival committee are to be congratulated for giving young musicians the opportunity of playing with the big boys. The winner will open the Sunday Concert at The Abbey Centre for Four Men and A Dog whilst also receiving two days studio time in the local Edenvella Studios, a cash prize of €500 and a commemorative award to display with pride. Tickets are available on line from www.eventelephant. com, or from The Abbey Centre and Dicey Reillys Bar & Off Licence Ballyshannon. For details visit www.ballyshannonfolkfestival.com.

Glasgowbury: Such a Perfect Day Dicey Rileys,” Paddy enthuses. It’s important to stress that the Glasgowbury Music Group doesn’t just gear itself towards one day in July. Run by musicians for musicians the Glasgowbury Music Group is a non-profit organization, which is ever expanding to cater for the needs and wants of local communities throughout the country. Activities and services range from songwriting workshops to animation master classes, to sound advice projects and, of course, the annual Glasgowbury festival. It has become a force for creative change in areas where cultural activities remain stifled by a lack of recognition and funding.
As music fans across Tyrone and Donegal return from their annual excursion to the Oxegen Festival, many will be airing out their tents in preparation for the North’s biggest independent music festival, Glasgowbury, now in its eleventh year and once again descending on the picturesque Sperrin Mountains on July 23. In 2000, the first festival took place when Draperstown singer-songwriter Paddy Glasgow organised a gathering of local bands and songwriters to perform a concert to raise awareness for the Ulster Cancer Foundation charity. By 2002 the ‘Small But Massive’ ethos of the festival saw it establish itself as one of the key musical events of the year for music fans both north and south of Ireland. Paddy points to a few of the factors that have made the festival work so well. “It’s down to the support of the people,” he explains. “If you give people something that strikes a chord with them they will come back for more and thankfully for us people continue to come back in great numbers. Also, we have the Sperrins on our side too. It’s such a beautiful location to hold a music festival. “We’ve always tried to promote new music from the North and the fact that so many bands who have played Glasgowbury in the past are now returning to play as signed-acts speaks volumes about what is going on musically in the country at the moment. I’ve always looked on the festival as a training ground for homegrown bands and all the different elements surrounding the music. Everyone can come and play their part. At the end of the day, a Fender guitar won’t dig a hole but we have a committee and a group of volunteers that help to keep this thing growing, and we’re always looking for any kind of support from anyone who thinks they can incorporate their skills into what makes Glasgowbury tick,” stresses Paddy. The naming of the festival was initially a joke, but a joke that has stuck. “Believe me there is nothing
egotistical about the festival name,” laughs Paddy. “When the first festival happened someone pointed to the Glastonbury festival and joked that this one should be called Glasgowbury, after me. It was a comical thing that just stuck and if we changed it now I’m not sure if people would get used to it.” Since 2000, artists to have appeared at Glasgowbury include The Undertones, Belfast band The Answer (who return this year and who have toured with AC/DC), Derry band Fighting With Wire, And So I Watch You From Afar, Duke Special, Ash, Oppenheimer, Robyn G Shiels and Woodstock legend, Henry McCullough to name but a few. Basically it’s a celebration of established Irish acts and new up and coming talents, many of whom return to the festival after successful tours with other acts across the world. “When you look at some of the previously unsigned bands who have played the festival it’s a great reflection of how healthy music is in the North,” explains Paddy. “On the flip-side we’ve also had Henry McCullough. The man has seen and done it all and to have someone like himself who has played at Woodstock performing at Glasgowbury is a massive honour. Also we have acts like In Case Of Fire, And So I Watch You From Afar and General
Remembering ‘The Big Man’ The world of music lost one of its biggest characters last month. Clarence Clemons, known to millions around the world simply as ‘The Big Man’, and as saxophonist of Bruce Springsteen’s legendary E-Street Band, sadly passed away on June 12, after suffering a stroke a week earlier. He was 69. His saxophone was central to the E-Street Band’s sound, lighting up anthems like ‘Thunder Road’, ‘Badlands’ and ‘Rosalita’. Perhaps his finest moment was the sax solo on ‘Jungleland’ - the closing track on Springsteen’s 1975 breakthrough album, ‘Born To Run’. Carrying such a signature sound while towering above his band-mates at six feet four inches, Clarence became a big figure both literally and metaphorically. His entry into the E-Street Band in 1971 is the stuff of legend. Whether factual or not, Clarence knew how to sell rock and roll mythology as well as anyone. “One night we were playing in Asbury Park,” he recalled, during one famous interview. “I’d heard The Bruce Springsteen Band was nearby at a club called The Student Prince and on a break between sets I walked over there. A rainy, windy night it was, and when I opened the door the whole thing flew off its hinges and blew away down the street. The band were on-stage, but staring at me
Fiasco, who have gone on to sign record deals and become known worldwide. They are all of capable of doing something monumental and Glasgowbury has always known and supported that.” So does Paddy agree that we are presently in something of a golden era of music in the North? “Totally,” he states. “At the start of the millennium there were a lot of bands in the North who were coming from a Hard Rock background. There is so much variety now: Hard Rock, Metal, Electro-Pop, Funk bands, acoustic singer-songwriters. I’d like to think that the line-up at Glasgowbury always reflects what’s going on at ground level. “It’s also important to show that there is so much going on in the towns and rural areas of the country and that it’s just not limited to Belfast and Derry. I was once at a conference in Belfast and there was a lot of focus on what’s going on in Derry and Belfast. This young lad from Omagh stood up and said that he was involved in regular nights of music in his hometown that were gathering crowds of over 100 people. At the end of the day there are a lot of venues in Belfast but a lot of it is bands playing to about ten people who are watching TV! There is so much going on in places like Omagh and Strabane, which I know because I’ve seen it for myself in venues like ades, which Springsteen recalled recently in a moving and honest eulogy for his friend. “(Clarence) was a not a day at the beach.”C” lived a life where he did what he wanted to do and he let the chips, human and otherwise, fall where they may. Like a lot of us (Clarence) was capable of great magic and also of making quite an amazing mess. This was just the nature of my beautiful friend,” reflected ‘The Boss’.
The late Clarence Clemons
framed in the doorway. And maybe that did make Bruce a little nervous because I just said, “I want to play with your band,” and he said, “Sure, you do anything you want.” The first song we did was an early version of ‘Spirit In The Night’. Bruce and I looked at each other and didn’t say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other’s lives. He was what I’d been searching for. In one way he was just a scrawny little kid. But he was a visionary. He wanted to follow his dream. So from then on I was part of history.” Like true friends, Springsteen and Clarence had a rollercoaster friendship throughout the dec-
Ireland’s first experience of ‘The Big Man’ and his magic came on the first day of June 1985, when Springsteen and the E-Street Band descended upon Slane Castle for a legendary performance. Being dressed head to toe in an elegant white suit, with obligatory eighties shoulder-padding and flat-top haircut assured that while Springsteen may have been ‘The Boss’, ‘The Big Man’ was most certainly ‘The King of The Castle’. Many visits to our shores would follow and each and every one of them would see a special moment between Clarence and the Irish audiences. Springsteen would often introduce him as “the biggest man you’ve ever seen” and make the audience spell out his name, which they always did with a frenzy knowing that a golden chime of sax from a classic like ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out’ beckoned. Outside of his work with the E Street Band, Clarence recorded with many other artists and had a number of musical projects on his own. The best known of these are his 1985 vocal duet with Jack-
Paddy explains, “Monthly gigs called the G Sessions take place in Draperstown, offering an outlet of expression for up-and-coming as well as established acts. There is also the Rural Key Music Project, which gives local youth the knowledge and know-how to take their work to the next level. It’s my ambition to establish a proper Music Centre for the youth and I think that it’s something that should be essential throughout the rural and small town communities because this is where the music talent lives. Young musicians deserve the proper rehearsal environment and exposure and this is one of the main focuses of Glasgowbury, not just for one day in July but every day.” Meanwhile, that day in July is fast approaching and Paddy guarantees anyone who attends a day and night of music and atmosphere to remember. “It’s a great location for an amazing day. There is something for everyone musically and it’s likely that you’ll discover an act whose star will rise to higher things. So I’d urge all music fans from Strabane, Omagh and all over Tyrone to take a wee skite over the mountain for a memorable experience,” concluded Paddy. Glasgowbury takes place on July 23 at Eagles Rock Valley, Draperstown. Festival Only tickets are £30. Festival and Camping tickets are priced £40. Acts performing include Cashier No.9, The Answer, LaFaro, Foy Vance, Phil Kiernan, Boxcutter, Mojo Fury, Girls Names, Rainy Boy Sleep, Axis Of, The Wonder Villains, A Plastic Rose, Dolbro Dan, Silhouette and loads, loads more. For information on booking tickets and all things Glasgowbury check the festival website: (www.glasgowbury.com). son Browne on the hit single ‘You’re A Friend Of Mine’ and his saxophone work on Aretha Franklin’s 1985 hit single ‘Freeway Of Love’. One of the last projects he was involved in was collaboration with Lady Gaga on the songs ‘Hair’ and ‘The Edge Of Glory’ from her current album ‘Born This Way’. Clarence’s last appearance with Springsteen and the E-Street Band in Ireland was in July, 2009 and it was possibly the finest Irish performance the band ever did, with Clarence taking centre stage during a heart-stopping rendition of ‘Jungleland’, where his solo remains a magical moment for all who had the pleasure to be there to see it at any time. On the night, as ever, Springsteen and the band broke the local curfew, and played for three hours and twenty minutes, leaving us at around 11.30 at night after a thirty song setlist and the memory of something that will stay in the heart forever. The E-Street Band may return, and as good as they will be, it will never be the same. Springsteen said in his eulogy: “Clarence doesn’t leave the E Street Band when he dies. He leaves when we die. So, I’ll miss my friend, his sax, the force of nature his sound was, his glory, his foolishness, his accomplishments, his face, his hands, his humour, his skin, his noise, his confusion, his power, his peace. But his love and his story, the story that he gave me, that he whispered in my ear, that he allowed me to tell... and that he gave to you.. is gonna carry on.” One-Two-Three-Four....!!

Council commited to improving air quality whilst combating fuel poverty Following a recent meeting, Strabane District Council has confirmed its commitment to improving air quality and combating fuel poverty in the district. At a meeting of the Corporate Affairs and Regulatory Services Sub Committee the Council debated how the district’s air quality could be protected while at the same time residents were struggling to keep their homes warm. Chief Environmental Health Officer, Paddy Cosgrove, described how air quality had improved hugely from the time when coal was used almost exclusively for home heating, but said that this had been jeopardised by the spiralling cost of home heating oil and the particularly cold winters of the past two years. As a result, many residents had found themselves in fuel poverty. The causes of fuel poverty were low household incomes, high fuel prices and poor energy efficiency; the effect of the high price of fuel had outstripped any impact achieved by addressing the other two issues. The government had promised to eradicate fuel poverty by 2010, but had agreed that the target had been missed. The Chief Environmental Health Officer reminded members that John McPeake, Chief Executive designate of the Housing Executive, had addressed Council about the possibility of reintroducing dual heating systems. He said that this would be acceptable if the solid heating element was for smokeless fuel only. He added that there were obstacles to reintroducing solid fuel, as houses converted to oil would need considerable refurbishment to their fireplaces and chimney flues. He reminded members that the Council is obliged to maintain high levels of air quality and urged residents to save throughout the year for their winter fuel. He said that officers from the Environmental Health Department would continue to monitor smoke from 355_StrabaneDC_OilAD_110x180mm.indd 1
25/6/10 09:37:23
chimneys, as it was still illegal to burn coal or any fuel that produced smoke. He suggested that if anyone needed advice on any aspect of their central heating requirements, energy efficiency or permissible fuels, officers in the Environmental Health Department would be happy to assist them. Chairperson of the Corporate Affairs and Regulatory Services Sub Committee, Councillor Michelle McMackin commented: “The Council has made great strides in improving the terrible air quality in the district. The Council does not want this progress to be lost by people using the wrong fuel. Our officers will continue to monitor for houses producing smoke from their chimneys. Initially they will advise people on how to improve energy efficiency, maximise their income, what the correct fuel is and impress on people that buying fuel is a 12-month task. Fuel poverty is a mitigating consideration in the Council enforcement policy and we will try to help people in fuel poverty to meet their obligations if they live in a smoke control zone. In the Council’s view, fuel poverty must be addressed as a separate issue whether people live in a smoke control zone or not. The Councillors are determined to raise the fuel poverty issue in the highest forum in the country; however, we are also determined to maintain good air quality. I would like to congratulate the thousands of people who are keeping to the rules and keeping the air quality within EC limits. To those who are not, I appeal to you to contact the Environmental Health Department and let them help you.” If you are uncertain about the limits of the smoke control zones, ring the Environmental Health Department on 71381311 or visit the Council website on www.strabanedc.com

Ballybofey Writer’s Play Takes Strabane Golf Club Centre Stage at Arts Festival
ALL PLAYING MEMBERSHIP NOW OPEN FOR 2011!
The local Arts will come into focus at this year’s Earagail Arts Festival with the premiere of a play written and performed by a local writer. ‘The Crowning Guest’ is the debut play by 31-yearold Ballybofey writer, Andrew Galvin, and it will be performed at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny on July 23 at 8pm by Babalon Theatre Company (Admission 7 Euro). A darkly comic meditation on death as creative force, ‘The Crowning Guest’ centers on the ‘Hermit’ (Galvin); a mystic who has banished death and sits alone recounting the misadventures of his apparent immortality. From the psychedelic explosion with Aldous Huxley and Timothy Leary to the death of a thousand cuts in 18th Century China, the ‘Hermit’ has seen it all, (or so he would have us believe), but as he informs us, “A life without death is hardly worth living”. ‘Binah’ (Gemma Walker) follows him through many years and incarnations, leading him from the shadow realms of dreams and madness to dance at last under her stars in the garden of delights. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ from his base in Letterkenny, Andrew Galvin, told us how he developed the play over a couple of years. “I began to formulate the idea of the play when I was travelling around Asia two years ago. It’s the first time I’d ever written a play and the main writing of it took about a year, with the last six months being the period when it really began to take shape. I take on two roles myself and Gemma Walker as ‘Binah’ takes on a very challenging role because there are five different female archetypes within her character,” explained Andrew. Aspects of ‘The Crowning Guest’ recall the work of writers such as Beckett and Pinter; a comparison Andrew is quite rightly comfortable with.

Club available for parties “Like a lot of Samuel Beckett’s work, the play takes place within the consciousness of the characters, with the ‘Hermit’ as the base of it all. While the theme of death is key, I think it’s done in a positive manner. It looks at nature and the fact that death is, indeed, part of life. It should be nothing to fear,” said Andrew. He continued, “I am so fortunate to have an amazing production crew involved as well. For sound design, Jeremy Howard has composed a fantastic score for the play and it will be used with projected animated film on stage courtesy of Aoife Foley and Daniel McGarrigle. Special thanks too, to Anne Marie Langan who will be in charge of the visuals and lighting.” Rehearsals have been intense, but Andrew enthused that everyone is getting really excited as the date of July 23 draws nearer. “It’s been flat out but very exciting. It’s also great to see local Arts get a chance like this. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to take the show around to a few other venues after this. It would be fantastic if we could see a great crowd on July 23 and a positive reaction,” concluded Andrew.
