Strabane Pays Tribute to Noel McBride From Front Page... We competed against teams from Galway, Athlone, Cork, Limerick, Dublin and Waterford and Noel would’ve adapted his act to wherever we went. He got a lot of bookings in Strabane down through the years as well and always proved to be very popular performing in places like the North Tyrone All-Stars, St Patrick’s Hall and the Fir Trees Hotel. A great character!” Strabane Councillor Eugene McMenamin recalled a “charitable person” whose comedy is still fondly remembered in Strabane.

“I was so sad to hear of Noel’s passing. One of life’s true entertainers has departed and we’ve lost a real character, who was always well thought of in Strabane. He had time for everybody. He was also a very charitable person who would do many shows for a good cause and not even charge. He was one of the greatest comedy performers that I have ever seen. His poems and sketches are still well remembered in Strabane; his famous “Effin and Bocan” sketch is a classic piece of comedy. He was way ahead of his time in some of the things he did and I’m certainly going to miss him,” Councillor McMenamin said. Strabane singer-songwriter, Terry McCafferty got to know Noel well down through the years and the Derry man turned out to be a bit of a good luck charm for him. “Noel was a lucky omen for me because he compered three competitions that I entered and I won all three! I went on to do a lot of char-

ity work with him and he would always come up to help out at any charity shows we were doing in Strabane. As a compere he would always slag me on stage but off stage he was always so nice and full of compliments about my songs,” Terry recalled. Noel’s unflinching willingness to help out charitable causes is also fondly remembered by Terry. “If you phoned Noel about any charity event at all he’d be there. He never refused,” he said. “I was also contacted by his brother Ed, who’s a radio presenter in the United States, on Noel’s recommendation, looking for some of my tracks, which was greatly appreciated,” he added. Noel was laid to rest on Monday, July 8, after a moving Requiem Mass held at St Columb’s Church in Derry. Fr Michael Canny said Noel was synonymous with Derry and with laughter.

Comedy Club with Chris Kent and Alan Irwin Winner of the Comedy Smackdown at the Galway Comedy festival 2010, and of the Bulmers Nuttin’ But Funny Competition 2009, Chris Kent is one of Ireland’s rapidly rising young comedians and will be performing in the Alley Theatre on Saturday 20th July. As well as being regular MC at Cork’s City Limits comedy club, Chris has gigged all over Ireland with PJ Gallagher, Ardal O’Hanlon and Colin Murphy, to name but a few. His sharp style preys on his own everyday life and his ability to laugh at himself gives for some great viewing. Kent’s unique style of effortless and lightening fast comedy will have you gasping for breath, in this sharp, quick-witted performance. In this brand new show, Kent throws some light on the joys of being a negligent electrician and a could-have-been porn star, as well as an uncanny
resemblance to a well-known sheep loving soap celebrity… Come and see Kent in action before he heads to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in July. Kent’s combination of charismatic flare and skillful comedic timing packs a knockout punch that will leave you aching for more. Supporting Chris Kent is Alan Irwin. Alan Irwin has been a comedian for two and a half years. In that time he’s played all across Ireland and Scotland. He’s also aged at a ridiculous rate, gained two stone, and his hair has started falling out. Not afraid to talk openly about almost anything on stage, from the profound to the nonsensical, Alan has established himself as a regular fixture on the Northern Irish comedy circuit. This appearance at The Alley will be an official preview of Alan’s solo show “The Idiot Wind” which will feature at this year’s Edinburgh Festival. Tickets are £6 and available from the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444 or online www. alley-theatre.com
Summer Season with Jazz Gazette Once again the jazz festival season is upon us and this year Jazz Gazette are back in the Alley Theatre over the summer months with music to melt to and something for everyone! An oasis from the hustle and bustle Summer Jazz Nights with Jazz Gazette in the Alley Theatre offers a uniquely soulful and friendly atmosphere set in truly intimate surroundings. With doors opening at 7pm, music commencing at 8pm, this year the Summer Jazz Nights will be moved from the Alley Café Bar into the main auditorium and will feature cabaret style seating. These will certainly be guaranteed to be relaxed and enjoyable evenings. Audiences will again be treated to the tones of the five piece Jazz Gazette. The band members consist of Gerard Bradley on piano and vocals, Mark Bradley on trumpet and vocals, Gary Cox on tenor saxophone, Peter Doherty on bass and Aidan Dunphy on drums.
Each week they will also have guest vocalists and musicians and welcome anyone who would like to come and ‘Jamm’ with them. Emma Devine Marketing Officer at the Alley Theatre commented ‘We are delighted that the Summer Jazz nights are back and with the new cabaret style in the beautiful auditorium this will add a whole new dimension to the event. Jazz Gazette are brilliant musicians and audience interaction is always superb. They offer a variety of music from jazz, swing and soul. Come along for seven nights of brilliant music. Summer Jazz Nights commence on Friday 19th July and run every Friday night until 30th August. This is the perfect chance to experience a series
The ‘Daughters of Bluegrass’ Wookalily will be at the Alley Theatre on Saturday 27th July at 8pm Wookalily are a multi-faceted, femaleled band from Northern Ireland who’ve been wooing and wowing audiences up and down the land with their compelling, jazzy blend of bluegrass, folk and country. Their mesmerising shows have made them a must-see from Dunmore to Derry, and on their recent trip to Nashville, where they’d been selected for the IBMA songwriter showcase and EBMA band showcase at The World of Bluegrass Week, they were warmly welcomed into the Daughters Of Bluegrass family. Wookalily turf out timeless songs from the bogs of Northern Ireland to the bayous of Louisiana. Having been swamped in both musical traditions they’ve managed to create a transatlantic sound that is authentic yet quirky. Despite their reckless ways they’ve managed to create a unique and distinctive sound that’s all heart. Their style, sometimes referred to among the lilys as chillbilly roots, has an old-time feel with a youngtime appeal. Adele Ingram from the band commented “We were so delighted to have been invited to play at The Alley Theatre in Strabane, it will be our first performance in the theatre and our first performance in Strabane’ Tickets are £6 and available from the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444 or online www. alley-theatre.com

Come and Join Us – Open Mic Nights in the Alley Bar Now is your time to shine as the Alley Café Bar is holding Open Mic Nights every Thursday night from 18th July to 29th August from 8pm. We are looking for all singers, musicians, comedians, poets, rappers, magicians, story tellers etc to be involved. Whatever your talent now is your time to shine. Organised by local musician Gavin Kelly these evenings will be full of variety showcasing the very best in local talent. Every Thursday night the microphone will vibrate with voices as performers speak, sing or act out their minds for all to see. The Alley Café Bar is the perfect venue for this as its compact enough to not be too daunting to first timers yet large enough for it not to seem intimidatingly personal. If you have a yearning to perform then we want to hear from you. Everyone welcome all genres of talents, styles covers or originals just bring your own instrument, play, jam or perform. As a spectator it’s the perfect opportunity to come along catch up with friends and relax whilst watching some great talent. John Kerr manager of the Alley Theatre commented ‘Last years Summer Open Mic Nights were a great success and displayed a brilliant range of talent. We are very excited about the return of these open mic nights. The talent in Strabane and the North West is immense and these open mic nights will highlight not only music

The final of Sounds Like Summer 2013 (SLS: 2013) at the Alley Theatre has just completed and what a final it was with Limavady band Ruairi and the Owls taking the SLS: 2013 title. Five piece band Ruairi and the Owls wowed the crowd with their upbeat tunes and melodic vocals from lead singer Ruairi Connolly and Rachel Gleeson. Having only formed since 2011 the band have came along way receiving national airplay on various stations including BBC Radio Ulster. They were invited to perform a set on BBC Introducing and recently performed at the Carnival of Colours, Music City and Stendhal Festival. The band have released numerous videos in the past few months which have tolled up thousands of hits and were interviewed by the BBC Breakfast Show during the production of their latest video for ‘Vapour’ off their last EP and the track was used as the soundtrack to the Northwest 200 as a result. Winning SLS: 2013 only proves this is a band to watch for this year. Speaking about winning the competition Ruairi Connolly commented ‘We are thrilled to win Sounds Like Summer, this is the biggest competition we have taken part in and we are still buzzing about winning. All the acts on the night were brilliant and it was great to meet other musicians. We can’t wait to get into the studio and record our track.’ Ruairi and the Owls had to beat stiff competition from accomplished singer/song writer Eunan McIntyre who has supported acts such as The Wolfe Tones, Tommy Sands and Daniel O’Donnell. Rock and Roll band Zero Point Zero also gave and amazing performance on the night with their Goth metal sounds and Donegal band Psychacotic who also performed a brilliant set. The judges certainly had a difficult choice to make. Ruairi and the Owls will go onto record their own original track and will receive post event mentoring from Small Town America Records. To see photos of the event please visit www.facebook.com/thealleytheatre. Keep a look out on the Alley Theatre You tube page as a video of the night will be uploaded shortly.

Letterkenny will be hosting its first ever One Act Festival after permission was granted from the Drama League of Ireland for an affiliated One Act Festival to take place in the town. The One Act Festival is an exciting opportunity for Letterkenny as it offers a platform to local drama groups and groups from all around the country to participate. A hard working committee was set up earlier in the year to apply for and run this festival. They are Chairperson - Jean Curran, Secretary - Pluincéad Ó Fearraigh, Treasurer – Andy Mc Granaghan, PRO
– Taryn Gleeson, Recording Secretary – Anne Flannery, members- Sean Mc Cormack, Patricia Mc Bride, Anthony Delap, Fiona Mc Daid and Andrew Galvin. Applications will be available from the beginning of July for any interested groups to enter a play for the festival. Due to the wealth of talent in the county and nationally it is hoped there will be a good mixture of local and national drama groups entering. The 3 day festival will be taking place in An Grianán Theatre, Letterkenny from 21 – 23 November 2013. Information can be found on the website letterkennyoneactfestival.wordpress.com or email letterkennyoneactfestival@gmail.com For PR enquiries contact Taryn Gleeson 0831578528 or taryngleeson@gmail.com

TotalMusic Strabane Bands in the Mix
Too Old To Rock ‘n’ Roll, Too Young To Die There are a number of things you have no business doing once you hit your thirties: having Superman bed sheets; actually playing with your action figure collection; mixing your beer; ordering from the kids menu; partying till 5am and working at 9am; denying the impending greys or balding. Another privilege denied to those who reach the vintage Hendrix, Morrison, Redding and Cobain failed to realise is the right to ask where the next big musical explosion is going to come from. Whether you were there at Newport when Dylan walked on with an electric guitar, Free Trade Hall, Manchester when the Sex Pistols ignited the creative minds of all in attendance or late 70s South Bronx observing the origins of Hip-Hop, the next big explosion is, to be brutally frank, none of your business. We all have that band, that moment that changed us, saved us, spoke to us directly and became a guide, an identity, a badge, a personal flag against everything else in life that meant nothing to us yet demanded our attention. That event happens in the teenage years and it’s a moment to hold dear because it is never to be replicated with the same level of passion and fervour. Yes, music can mean everything right up until we breathe our last on this planet but like an athlete, our early years were our best years. As they say, you don’t forget the first time! But all is not lost old timer. You can still serve a role in the present and the future. Your role is simple – accept that the bands you hold dear are not any better or worse than what is emerging daily – they just got there first with what is essentially a limited musical vocabulary aka rock ‘n’ roll. Music is constantly erupting and making some young kid’s pulse sprint and the hairs on the back of his or her neck stand up – such an instinct can never be wrong and will never be forgotten. Historically, the 30-plus brigade has never been invited to those landmark moments. In fact, it was they who scorned The Beatles and The Stones, The Pistols, The Clash, Alternative Rock, Hip-
Three local band feature on Mixtape 12!
Music website Chordblossom has just released its latest digital monthly mixtape, which is free to download and share. ‘Transmission Mixtape No.12’ features ten acts, with three of them hailing from Strabane: Those Ghosts, Tokyo Empire and White Male Actors. Also on this month’s mixtape is Derry’s Future Chaser and blues rock power trio Troublesome Bucks, Belfast’s Rocket Propelled Gorillas, Hurdles and Aquatramp, County Down punk rockers 20 Second Century and Dungannon’s Zak Whitefield. All of the music used in the mixtapes has been kindly donated by the artists themselves and it is indeed a rich taster of the wealth of greatness currently raising the roof across the country. Check for yourself on http://chordblossom.com/transmission Meanwhile, Those Ghosts, who won Chordblossom’s 2013 Kickstart competition, have just released their debut single, ‘Explain’. They have taken advantage of the opportunity to record their single at Millbank studios and Chordblossom’s very own Daveit Ferris has designed the artwork. The single is available to stream on Spotify and can be purchased on Amazon right now. It will be coming to iTunes in due course. Hop, Dance music, Rave culture or any other party that was being held by those beneath them in age. The Who now fall under that rather unpleasantly termed bracket of “Dad-Rock” – a recent enough genre consisting of guitar bands of a certain vintage, mostly with roots in the 60s. Many lovers of “Dad-Rock” bands like The Who bemoan the lack of new blood making a fresh sound, which in itself is a sad crossover into “old git-ism” that they themselves rallied against in the sixties. Remember that wonderful scene in The Who’s film version of ‘Quadrophenia’? Phil Daniels as ‘Jimmy’ sits down to watch The Who on ‘Ready, Steady,
Go’ and proceeds to emulate Keith Moon and Pete Townsend in a frenzied mix of air-guitar and air-drums. His dad stands at the kitchen door laughing at the absurdity of it all, deeming it to be an awful racket that’ll make his son go deaf. How many Who fans now stand at the kitchen door saying that same thing? “Dad-Rockers” bemoan the lack of fresh new sounds yet inexplicably champion the contrived, banal sounds of newcomers like Jake Bugg, who in truth brings nothing new to the table and serves merely as a diluted reminder of the past. That’s perfectly fine if that’s what someone wants, but in 2013, in this world as we know
it today, Jake Bugg is about as relevant as a Sinclair C-5. Perhaps making that statement is my own personal foray into “old git-ism” but this is one “old git” who’s open enough to know that there’s a party going on somewhere and his name is not on the list. Yes, we can stand at the back and tap our toes with a smile on our face just as dear old John Peel did right up until he breathed his last, but don’t be fooled into thinking things aren’t shaking right now – you’ll always be the last know, old timer! So enjoy the party boys and girls and the old mantra remains intact - never trust anyone over 30 – yourself included when you get there!
THE HITMAKER IS ON THE WAY There is nothing you can say about Nile Rodgers that hasn’t already been heard by billions of people, via millions of radio airwaves, in thousands of cities, in hundreds of countries. The career of Nile Rodgers is one of the most enduring and prolific in music. His signature The post-gig reaction to the perfor- is scrawled across an amazing array of mance has certainly heightened the music – from Madonna to Diana Ross, anticipation of the funk ensemble’s from David Bowie to Eric Clapton. arrival in Derry this month, July 28, Chic was the brainchild of Nile and for a gig at the Venue, organised by bassist Bernard Edwards. classics like “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)”, “Everybody Dance”, “Le Freak”, “I Want Your Love” and “Good Times”. Between 1976 and 1983 Chic were the superstars of disco and the scene’s most enduring act. They outlasted virtually every other band before eventually disbanding following the anti-disco backlash. Nile Rodgers went on to become a production legend, producing albums for the likes David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Diana Ross and Grace Jones. After a brief reformation in the early nineties Niles reformed Chic per-
manently in 1998 and they have continued to perform around the world ever since. Nile recently completed production work on the new Daft Punk album and features on the “hit of the summer”, “Get Lucky”. Expect all the Chic classics and a dip into his hit-making exploits such as Bowie’s “Lets Dance”, Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” and Duran Duran’s “Notorious”. Bring your dancing shoes – you’ll be breaking a sweat! Tickets are a very reasonable £21.50 including booking fee. Box Office: 028 7126 4455. Get on it!

Herald Holiday Travel Tips 1. Roll your clothes when packing. No creases and more clothes fit into your suitcase. 2. Learn how to use a needle and thread. You’ve only got space for a few items of clothing. Sewing a broken button back on will save you a lot of hassle. 3. Keep an emergency stash of money. If you lose your wallet you will still need to eat. An empty Chapstick is a fantastic secret hiding spot. 4. Learn how to pack light. You do not need to take 20kg for a week of travel. You CAN wear trousers two days in a row or more. The less you have to carry, the happier you will be travelling. 5. Make sure your bank cards work. There is nothing more annoying on holidays than spending hours on the phone to the bank back home. 6. Buy and wear good walking shoes. Blisters are not fun and high heels don’t work on Europe’s cobblestone pathways. 7. Eat where the locals eat. Ask the locals where they eat. Go there instead. There is a reason they eat there! 8. Take a jumper on the plane. It is cold. It has air
conditioning. 9. Take thick socks for the plane. Cold feet will stop you sleeping. 10. Check if the drinking water is safe. That includes brushing your teeth, ice in cocktails and drinking water in the shower. 11. Get your vaccinations if you need them. Yellow fever is not fun. You will kick yourself if you could have prevented it and you didn’t. 12. Carry baby wipes / facewipes. This can be used to feel clean when there are no showers. Yes, sometimes there are NO showers. 13. Learn how to say “no thank you”. Most travel advice columns will tell you to learn how to say “hello”, “yes please”, “thank you” and “do you speak English?”. But in some countries you really want to be able to say “no thank you, please leave me alone”. Think about the crowded market places in Asia. Knowing how to say “no thank you” in their language is going to give you a lot more peace. 14. Most importantly...Enjoy yourself!

Great achievement for Lifford salon
Shannon Dolan in final of L’Oreal Colour Trophy Shannon Dolan. the Lifford hairdresser who has reached the final of Loreal Colour Trophy 2013.
SHANNON Dolan Hairdressing, based in Lifford, has been chosen as a finalist in one of the country’s most prestigious industry competitions, the L’Oreal Colour Trophy Ireland 2013. From well over 100 entries Shannon Dolan Hairdressing was the only finalist from the North West to secure a place in the grand final which takes place on July 15th at the Convention Centre in Dublin. A high profiled judging panel of industry experts including JML Minetti from Alexandre de Paris, Franci Curletto and David Sanchez had the difficult task of selecting the finalists. The L’Oreal Colour Trophy is the world’s longest running and largest, most directional live competition in the hairdressing calendar. Shannon Dolan Hairdressing and team will be glamming it up for the gala ball in Dublin on July 15th.
Lifford Salon to compete at the Grand Final this weekend
Hairdressers from all over Ireland waited in suspense to hear who had been selected as finalists to compete at the The L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final. Shannon has only been in business for four years, but has gone from strength to strength in her premises located in the old Gateway Hotel building in Lifford. Considering how many people entered the competition, it was a huge achievement to get selected for the final.
The L’Oreal Colour Trophy is the world’s longest running and largest, most directional live competition in the hairdressing calendar. “I’m absolutely over the moon,” she told the Herald. The competition presents hairdressing salons across Ireland with the platform to showcase their unique talent, by fusing fashion trends and technical excellence to create electrifying results. Shannon Dolan and her staff have all received specialist training with L’Oreal. The overall winning salon and hairdresser will win a prize package worth approximately €20,000 including a photoshoot in London, a double page spread in Irish Tatler magazine, lunch with a top UK hairdressing idol, bespoke education plan, a bespoke PR plan and endless PR opportunities.
One of the judges, David Sanchez, Creative Director of Rizzos, Spain, had this message for all the Irish finalists:
Stunning hair designsare the norm at Shannon Dolan Hairdressing, Lifford’s model Jenna Whitham with the qualifying look, that earned Shannon Dolan Hairdressing a place in the final. See more great styles over on the right hand side.
“For RIZOS Academy it has been an honour to participate as a judge on Colour Trophy 2013 in Ireland, the quality of the work presented has been magnifi cent and required a very complicated vote, I want to congratulate each and every one of the participants and to L’Oreal Professionnel by encouraging the creative process of our profession and contributing greatly to the development of the hairdressing industry”

he Castlederg community is still on a high following the success of the Tyrone Fleadh held over June 27 to July 1. The traditional Irish music and culture festival brought thousands of people into the area, providing a huge boost for local businesses. Hosting the event was a major coup for the Aran Derg branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, as it was the first time the Fleadh had ever taken place in Castlederg. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week, Chairman of Aran Derg CC, Liam Gallen, was still clearly over-joyed with how the event turned out. “It was a brilliant success. It exceeded everybody’s expectations, mine included. There wasn’t one single bad incident, which is a testament to everyone in attendance. We received so much goodwill from the whole community in Castlederg. The Nationalist community know all about a Fleadh, but many members of our Unionist community came out and supported us and enjoyed the weekend themselves. It was a happy joyous occasion and everybody came on board and a party atmosphere was had,” he told us.
packed with positive vibes. I’ve been receiving phone calls from all over Tyrone since the Fleadh ended telling me that it was the best Tyrone Fleadh these people have enjoyed in years.” The Aran Derg CC Chairman was always confident that Castlederg was perfect for the Fleadh. “It has nice big long street with a lovely square in the centre, lots of bars and lots of cafes. I had trouble convincing some people that it would work. I don’t think I’ll be having that problem again after such an amazing weekend,” he predicted.
Antrim musicians in the Derg Arms.
And how did the Sportsman’s Inn get on during the festival? “I’m 30 years in the business and have never had four days like it,” stated Mr Lynch. “It was a major success and we were busy all four days and nights. We even had the wonderful Nathan Carter come in on the Sunday and play accordion and a fine accordion player he was too. We had loads of visitors from Dromore, Derry, Donegal, Ballygawley and even a few Americans here. Everybody is still talking about it. It was Castlederg’s first ever Fleadh and nobody knew what to expect but it was absolutely brilliant.” Olga Walls from the Derg Arms echoed those sentiments. “The Fleadh was so well received in Castlederg. We had Darren Breslin in performing for an hour on Saturday night followed by a host of other musicians and that was a great night. On the Sunday we had an acoustic session and a lot of the musicians from the Saturday night session returned and the craic was mighty. It was great to see so many people and people who perhaps had never been in our bar before coming in and enjoying the hospitality and the company. People didn’t really know what to expect with this being the first year of the Fleadh in Castlederg but if it returns they will certainly be ready for it,” explained Olga.
Charlie Lynch, from the Sportsman’s Inn, agreed with the Aran Derg CC Chairman that Castlederg is custom made for such events. “We have great venues here, like St Eugene’s High School, which held the competitions and St Patrick’s Hall, which was the venue for all “It brought a lot of extra business into Castled- the Ceili dancing and we also have the leisure erg, a place that garners a lot of negativity,” centre, which held a whole host of events. The Tyrone Fleadh leaves Castlederg wanting more! Continued from previous page John Gallen from Gallen’s Bar agreed. “I didn’t really know what to expect but it all panned out like we hoped. Like any event, we’d look to improve upon it if we were to get it again but looking back it was a wonderful weekend and a proud weekend for Castlederg. It was a great success, the atmosphere was brilliant and the music was fantastic. It was especially pleasing to see visitors and locals mixing together. Full credit has to go to the organisers. We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend,” reflected John. Events kicked off with two-hand dancing in the leisure centre on Thursday with the McGloin brothers. That night a quiz on Irish history and culture took place in the Sportsman’s Bar, with 20 tables consisting of teams of four. This was followed by an Irish music session, which had a huge attendance.
An All Ireland Champion to her name!
The Official Opening of the Fleadh took place at 8pm on Friday evening, June 28. All Aran Derg branch members of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann were in attendance, as was the County Chairman, Hughie Quinn and the Ulster Chairman, Eamon Graham. Local politicians also attended, as did local Councillor Ruairí McHugh, who is now Chairman of Strabane District Council. Guest musician Darren Breslin supplied the music at the ceremony – himself an esteemed accordion player, who many will argue is the best player of the instrument in the country at present. Dancers from the Niamh Browne School of Irish Dance also entertained the crowd at the Official Opening. They were followed by a Ceili with the Emerald Ceili Band in St Pat’s Hall, which had a huge turn-out. Another session in the Derg Arms. Darren Breslin and Friends put on a concert in the Derg Valley Leisure Centre at the same time and it also attracted a massive crowd. Competitions took place on the Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Following that, music sessions took place all around Castlederg, on the streets and in the bars. The Fleadh Mass took place at 6pm and included a lovely mix of Irish language, singing and dancing. From 7pm onwards there was barely a space to be found in town that didn’t have live music. There was set dancing in St Pat’s Hall at 10pm and the music on the Main Street of Castlederg went on till the early hours of Sunday morning.
Liam Gallen addresses the crowd on Launch Day.
Following the resumption of the competitions on Sunday morning, the Fleadh parade took place at 4.30pm, going through the whole of Castlederg. It was a fantastic display of colour, particularly from the young children involved, and it was so well received by Enjoying playing some great music. the people who lined the streets from all sides of the community. Music on the Main Street and the bars kicked off again around 6.30pm right up until closing. The Logues, one of the most popular bands in the county, and indeed the country, closed the Fleadh at the Townhouse Bar on Sunday night, entertaining the capacity crowd, rightly advised to get there early, with a wonderful set that, like the Fleadh a whole, will continue to be talked about for some time to come. The Chairman of Aran Derg CC, Liam Gallen would like to pay tribute and thank all the local business people who came on board and supported the Tyrone Fleadh. “Everybody deserves credit and we hope it won’t be too long until we are hosting such an event again. I would also like to pay tribute to the committee of the Aran Derg branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for all their great work and dedication over the last eight to nine months. They deserve so much credit for the work they’ve put in.” CCE-Gaelic pioneer Jackie Lynch from Fulcara with blood relations Pat Lynch and Ruairi Carlin.

Some time ago I got a call from my eldest daughter who works in London in the fashion industry. She had just started a new job and was finding it all very challenging. The fashion industry is constantly meeting deadlines in order to produce garments for ‘the next big fashion show’ as it were. Tempers near deadlines can be frayed and everybody under severe pressure to produce quality work in the time given. The evening my daughter phoned she was particularly distressed as she believed her boss had been rude, nasty, blamed her in the wrong and had expected her to do things she was untrained to do. She spent some time explaining the details and how unhappy she was in the job at that time. As a father listening to his daughter’s words and hearing the distress and unhappiness in her voice was really difficult for me. All I could think of were questions like ‘How dare HE do this to my daughter’ or ‘Who the hell does HE think HE is’. Other thoughts like ‘if I was over there I would teach Him some manners’ or ‘When’s the next plane to London’? However all I did was listen to her and at the end I asked her imagine looking at the situation from her boss’s perspective in an attempt to settle her down a little. Eventually she settled and I went to bed much more content.
The next evening I got another call from my daughter in even greater distress. Things were not going well for her at work at all and she felt that whatever she did for her boss was never enough or indeed ever GOOD enough. She believed he was totally ungrateful, unappreciative and she felt bullied and undermined on a regular basis. After listening to all her woes I felt really disturbed and wanted to ‘kill’ him as it were. However, again I asked her to reframe the situation from the point of view of her boss. I explained that bad behaviour was always bad behaviour and unacceptable however sometimes we must look past the behaviour to see what is going on with the person inside that causes them to act this way. I reminded her of the Pareto Principle and asked her to apply the concept to her situation. In this case the Pareto Principle would suggest that 80% of her boss’s behaviour would be to do with past events in his life and only 20% with the situation to hand. I also explained that if this was the case, my daughter was getting the brunt of her boss’s anger and frustrations just because of the fact she was there and his behav-

iour and comments had very little to do with her personally. We do not know what goes on in someone else’s mind, I continued, however we can process things in a way that will distress us, or not. This takes practice because when someone says something nasty about us, very often they are only reinforcing what we already think about ourselves and we can feel very hurt indeed. Once again my daughter settled and I again was able to go to bed more contented, however these calls continued for several more evenings and I did my best to reassure her that she was loved dearly and her skills and qualities would be appreciated for their greatness someday. Eventually the calls ceased and sometime later my daughter called me again about an issue at work. She apologised to me as she felt the only times she rang me was to
‘give out’ about work as it were. I suggested that rather than her think she was giving out, to treat it simply as ‘debriefing’, and I assured her that having such a facility, I believe, is necessary for everyone. I also reminded her that I have a coach and a supervisor with whom I ‘off load’ to and would find things impossible if those facilities were not in place. Every now and then she calls me and says ‘daddy I have some debriefing to do’. We have a wee laugh and I listen and I feel so privileged that she feels safe enough to do it with me. Only for her boss’s bad behaviour we may not have had the opportunity to put such a facility in place and for that I am grateful. Until the next time Tom Herron

Whether interpreting songs by his favourite writers (Freddie’s renditions of Tom Wait’s Martha and Warren Zevon’s Accidentally Like A Martyr are our particular favourites) or performing his own classy compositions, his live performances are nothing short of legendary. From busking in London subways at the age on nineteen to his emergence as one of the leading lights of the Irish folk scene to the present day, Freddie consistently remains one of the most soulful, heartfelt and talented performers you will ever hear. The ever popular Conal Gallen takes his hilarious humour to a whole new level in this side-splitting 2 act comedy farce. Welcome to the household of Bridie and Willy Murphy, a couple who have fought the war of marriage for over 30 years. Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed, wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling, stinking tenement block, in which curtain-twitchers and peeping toms live side-by-side, and the wolf is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Seamlessly synchronizing live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation, this wickedly twisted show comes to the Balor Arts Centre for 2 days only, following a world premiere at Sydney Opera House in 2010, 3 sell out, critically acclaimed London seasons including 2 at the National Theatre and 2 years of touring across the globe including appearances at Theatre de la Ville Paris and Avignon, New Zealand and Spoleto USA Festivals. Jim is honoured with the highest possible accolade in Ulster basketball
Strabane’s Golden Age of Basketball Jim McCloskey met the Strabane Herald at the cafe bar of the Alley, dressed like he was ready to shoot some hoops. He was meeting the wrong reporter for a bit of one-on-one if the truth be told, although the very same thing would certainly do no harm! He was holding a golden basketball, which was presented to him by his former players to mark his retirement from Holy Cross College. The ball itself is only ever given to the most esteemed figures in Ulster basketball . It was rather profound as we were about to sit down and discuss the golden-age of basketball in Strabane – an era that Jim observed from its beginnings and one that simply would not have happened without him. The beginnings of it all go back to the late ’60s. “It was 1969 in St Colman’s,” recalls Jim. “There were a few of us playing basketball in school already. Patsy Logue, one of our star players, contacted me about getting some of the lads together after school for practice sessions. Players from the school team and some teachers, including the late Brendan Dolan, would stay behind and practice together and eventually Zenith Basketball Club was formed from that.”
of NBA great, James Worthy. Russell, himself, was a great player who blended in very well with the Zenith team. We were unbeaten at all levels for five years,” enthuses Jim. A tournament was also established as a tribute to former St Colman’s PE teacher and avid basketball player, Brendan Dolan, who died tragically in a car accident in 1973. The Brendan Dolan Memorial Tournament brought all the Super League teams, assuring that the local team were performing at the highest level. “As a result of this our school teams went on to have major success, winning Ulster School Leagues year in and year out,” explains Jim.
Coaching Badges
Jim went on to take his coaching badges at the National Basketball Camp in Dungarvin and at the University of Limerick. He then went on coach the Ulster U17 team for almost 30 years. “The late Ben MacIntyre used to take It wasn’t long before Zenith were playing in care of the travel arrangements for the team the Ulster League, with Jim playing alongside and I took care of the coaching side of things. the likes of Patsy Logue, Barney Langan and The whole thing was based for 30 years in St Gerard Christy. Stress reduction & Relaxation through Reiki some cases, they also treat the families and carers • St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington • The Haven Breast Cancer Support Centres in Leeds of their patients.
One of the greatest Reiki healing health benefits is stress reduction and relaxation, which triggers the bodies natural healing abilities, and improves and maintains health.
Reiki healing is a natural therapy that gently balances life energies and brings health and well being to the recipient. This simple, non-invasive healing system works with the Higher Self of the Receiver to promote health and well being of the entire physical, emotional and psychic body. Therefore it is truly a system of attaining and promoting wholeness of Mind, Body and Spirit. Reiki is a specific type of subtle energy work in which healing is performed by the touch of the hands, allowing the flow of the energy from a limitless source (God Force) to the patient via the Reiki practitioner. It is extremely powerful, yet gentle energy that can be easily channelled to yourself and others, just by intention. Reiki healing is a pure energy form. When it is combined with the sincere desire of the client, who is willing to participate in a cleansing within their emotional and spiritual consciousness, a total healing can occur.
Potential health benefits of reiki healing treatments
When we are relaxed, stress-free, we are able to restore our natural ability to heal. Long term practice of whole-body reiki will restore the general condition of the body. It will open the energy channels and this will allow the body to deal properly and naturally with stress and build-up toxins and cope with anxiety and depression. When a person is in good health, regular therapy will increase the bodies built-in defences. This will manifest itself as confidence and outward harmony in dealing with everyday events. The person will gain a positive outlook on life. Reiki will also provide additional energy required to recover from illness. A Reiki healing session can induce an extremely comfortable state of being that can bring alteration in the clients consciousness. If used with other natural therapies (meditation, crystals, aroma therapy, Bach Flower remedies, homeopathy, etc.) Reiki will reinforce their effect. It can be used also as complementary therapy, because Reiki is truly a complementary care. It complements and enhances the health care the patient receives in the hospital or from other health care providers.
Reiki in mainstream health
As Reiki has grown in popularity it has become recognized by many organizations. The National Health Service (NHS) of the UK for instance includes Reiki as part of its CAM or Complementary and Alternative Medicine program. This growth is not only local, but has been happening on a global scale. There seems to be a growing number of NHS practices now prepared to offer many forms of alternative therapy as part of their primary care health improvement programmes. Cancer Research UK is an example of an organisation where they include and provide information on complementary and alternative therapies for cancer Reiki is excellent for healing any physical, mental, care where Reiki is recognised and listed as a comemotional and spiritual issues of any kind and it plementary therapy. Slim-tastic...local couple 8 stone lighter and at target! A local couple have regained their passion and found new zest for life after losing a combined weight of almost 8 and a 1/2 stone and are confident they will remain at this weight for life. Brian and Angela Hasson lost the weight after joining their local Slimming World group and now their amazing weight loss has transformed their lives. The pair admits that they have been overweight for most of their adult life and child bearing years. But in November 2011 Brian bit the bullet after seeing how successful his son Brian had being at slimming world and decided that being overweight was holding him back. He resolved that he had to do something about it and decided to join his nearest Slimming World group. It however took Angela another eight months to join knowing that the following year they were to celebrate 30 years married and she wanted to enjoy the party and holiday in Spain without feeling frumpy.

A hit or a miss, what do you think? I have to say, it is a long time since I was so eager to receive a book in the post as I was when I knew the book written by Hank Haney called ‘The Big Miss’ was about to drop on my doorstep.
25 balls in a row on the range. He would hit the balls and then move away from his station and sit in his golf cart and stare silently out into the distance. When asked what he was doing he would simply say ‘ I am just thinking about what we just did’. For me this was a terrific insight and is totally compatible from a brain and learning perspective. Clearly, Tiger understood the need for there to be a quality of attention to what he was doing as opposed to just mindlessly bashing golf balls.
The book is an ‘inside view’ on the life of being the golf coach of Tiger Woods. Haney spent over six years in that role before the two of them went their separate ways and split in the most acrimonious of fashion. There have been many views expressed by the golfing press as to whether Haney should or shouldn’t have written the book. He had broken that unwritten rule of client confidentiality in going public on his insights of their time together. I have found the book fascinating as we really know so little about the most famous sportsman let alone golfer of the past ten years. This iconic, seemingly untouchable figure, who suffered the most prolific and public fall from grace possibly that there has ever been. It is very clear from the pages of the book what we thought about Tiger, the image created and
Hank Haney with Tiger Woods.
He understood how the brain needs time to consolidate learning. The idea we can just stand on a range hitting ball after ball in the hope it will somehow create ‘muscle memory’ is, for many golfers, a dangerous route to go down. We can hit lots of balls yes, but not all in one go! Give your brain a chance. Change location, change the task, change your focus because very little Make no mistake, golf is a different game now learning and consolidation will take place in the at the top level in no small way because of what face of monotony. Tiger achieved. But rather than go into too much of the curtain twitching detail of Tigers person- Overall, I would say the intention behind ‘The ality, I want to focus on what Haney revealed Big Miss’ is open to question but for anyone about how Tiger practiced his game when he fascinated by this flawed genius called Tiger was winning Major after Major and his insights Woods, then it is a riveting good read. It just for me are immensely useful for all of us trying goes to show the vital importance of effective practice engineered and the actual REALITY are two to play our own better game of golf. very different things. It is apparent from Haney’s words that we have an individual in Woods who Haney reveals that Tiger seldom hit more than Talk soon, Enjoy the Open. is immensely complex and difficult to handle whilst at the same time someone who has forever changed the way that golf is played and, more importantly, HOW top class golfers go about the process of becoming the best player they can be.
