North West Rallies Together For Rachel A number of fundraisers have taken place locally in support of a young lady from Burndennet, who is to undergo pioneering brain surgery in Australia. 24 year-old mother of one, Rachel McGettigan, suffers from Dystonia, Scoliosis, Cervical Lordosis of the spine, muscle wastage and a 14mm cyst in the brain. After a consultation she was informed that hugely expensive surgery was necessary, and she would have to travel to the other side of the globe to undergo it. She has now travelled to Australia for the pioneering and potentially life-changing surgery, which will be carried out by renowned brain surgeon Dr. Charles Teo. The procedure will see the removal of the 14mm cyst on her brain - and help to improve her quality of life and hopefully lessen her daily chronic pain. The surgery costs £45,000 and a fundraising campaign was set up to help her family reach this target; it has already raised a big chunk of the money needed.
Fundraisers have included a successful outdoor concert and duck derby at Christy’s Sports Bar on Sunday, May 3, a Mount Errigal climb on the same day, an Owen Roe O’Neill’s GAC Quiz Night, a Zumbathon, a Night at the Races at Burndennet The Gala Concert will feature at least Cricket Club and a ‘Rave For 14 performers, with all profits going to A Reason’ night in Mason’s, ‘Rachel’s Fund’. The Herald met up with Billy and his nephew Tommy Diver to view the prestigious piece of family history, now back in its rightful place. “The whole thing came about when Dennis McMonagle contacted the Strabane Herald,” Tommy recalled. “He was looking for anyone who may be a relation of Private John Diver, who served with the Connacht Rangers during the First World War and who lived in 49 Townsend Street. Someone who knows my wife, Audra, mentioned it to her because we have a son called John and guessed that there may be some link. I got back from work that day and she told me all about it. I always remembered my father and my granny and granda always chatting about Johnny Diver, who would’ve been my granda’s
brother, and how he came home after being wounded during the First World War. So automatically I thought it must be him, even though I didn’t know he lived in Townsend Street.” Speaking to the Diver family, Mr McMonagle explained that he purchased the medal at a fair many years ago. It was only with the recent developments in sourcing family history that have become available on the Internet that he was able to trace the history and ownership of the medal. “The name and army number is on the edge of the medal, so he was able check online records. Obviously lots of records have since been lost because of fires and so forth, but fortunately he was able to locate the owner of the medal to right here in Strabane, right down to his address and the fact that he had a sister called Annie, because she had written a letter to the war office enquiring about him after he was wounded. From there, I was able to tell Dennis that Annie was the wife of my granda Tommy. That was all he needed and

Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help.
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Eimear gets head shave in aid of Macmillan! As a tribute to her mother, Strabane teen, Eimear McGettigan, took the bold and brave step of getting her head shaved on April 4. Eimear, from Ashbrook, shed her locks in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, raising a fantastic £3000 in the process. The Macmillan charity is close to Eimear and her family›s hearts, after her mother, Teresa, bravely battled cancer until she sadly passed away last August.
Following the shave in her mother’s memory, a delighted Eimear said, “I just want to thank everyone who sponsored my head shave. I also wanted to thank those who helped out on the night and the weeks leading up to the event. Macmillan is a brilliant organisation and due to everyone’s brilliant donations and sponsorship I have raised £3000! I honestly can’t thank everyone enough, as this will help so many families who are fighting this terrible disease! I may be feeling the cold today but it was absolutely worth it!”

Newlife launches County Tyrone appeal to change children’s lives – just like Matthew The family of Strabane boy Matthew Gallagher are backing the launch of an appeal to provide specialist equipment for children with disabilities in County Tyrone. His mum Claire is so pleased with the specialist car seat that enables her seven-year-old son to travel safely that she is urging local people to help change the lives of other local children. Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children has helped 33 families in County Tyrone through equipment grants and loans totalling £28,806, so we know there is a very real county need.

You can help Newlife help more children like Matthew who was provided with a specialist car seat that improves the whole family’s safety and meets essential care needs. Together we can really change the lives of children with disability and terminal illness – supporting them to experience and enjoy life and all that we take for granted.
That’s why Newlife – the largest charity funder of specialist equipment for children with disabilities and terminal illness in the UK – is launching the Newlife County Tyrone Fund – www.newlifecharity.co.uk/tyrone. Statutory services in County Tyrone often have a responsibility to make It is an opportunity for local people to equipment provision – but when help help local disabled children and every is declined, Newlife steps in. However, in the county. where we are unable to overturn these decisions, we provide the equipment ourselves through our range of grant and loan services. whether acquired through birth defect, prematurity, accident or illness. Vitally, the County Tyrone Fund website – www.newlifecharity.co.uk/tyrone – will enable local people to find out who needs help in their county right now and highlight the support the charity gives vulnerable families. It includes contact details for the Newlife County Liaison Team – telephone number 01543 431 444 or email local@newlifecharity.co.uk – and shows specific ways people can help support children with disability and terminal illness and their families. That might involve taking part in a local sporting challenge, give you information on how to organise a fundraising event – or even ask you to donate £5 today! Volunteers are also needed to help raise awareness of what we do and how we do it. We hope that by launching the Newlife County Tyrone Fund, children with disabilities or terminal illness in the county won’t have to go without the equipment they need for everyday life. Newlife Foundation supports families in County Tyrone through a range of free services: • Nurse-staffed helpline • Equipment grants • Emergency equipment loans • Sensory and developmental toy ‘pod’ loans.
New equipment like Matthew’s is needed New equipment for her son Matthew has made the world of difference to Matthew’s mum Claire Gallagher. Matthew had outgrown his High Street purchased car seat and needed a larger one with a five point harness for the correct postural support and to make sure he is safe whilst travelling. The seven–year-old needs anti-epileptic therapy and emergency medication for prolonged seizure activity. He needs assistance with all aspects of his activities of daily living. It’s A Family Affair Fresh from their hugely successful shows last year celebrating 25 years since the release of their debut album, ‘Songs For The Tempted’, Newry band The 4 Of Us have kept that momentum going by touring well into 2015. They have also completed a brand new album, ‘Sugar Island’, which will be released later in the year. A taster from the album, ‘Birdseye View’, is currently doing healthy rounds on the Irish airwaves. The heart, soul and pulse of The 4 Of Us remains brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy, and they will give the Strabane audience a taste of their forthcoming album and a rich selection of classics such as ‘Mary’, ‘Washington Down’ and ‘She Hits Me’ when the duo return to the Alley Theatre on Saturday, May 23 for a special acoustic set.
the band dynamic. Declan and I have been playing together since before we even started a band, so for us its second nature, and that’s an advantage and the Strabane show will very much focus on the dynamic that Declan and I have. We always joke that shows like tonight (Vicar Street) it’s The 4 Of Us and for other shows it’s 2 Guys, 2 Guitars,” he laughed.
When the ‘Herald’ caught up with lead singer, Brendan, he was in Dublin getting ready for the band’s show in Vicar Street that night. It was to be a special gig, where half the set would feature the original line-up of the band.
The irony of being called The 4 Of Us when there can be more or less than four on the stage has not been lost on Brendan. In fact, it has caused some comical moments down the years.
“We’ve just put ‘Birdseye View’ out to radio, so we thought we’d keep the ball rolling and do lots of shows introducing people to some new material as well as the older stuff. The Strabane show will just be me and Declan, so that’s a different, more intimate dynamic that always works well,” explained Brendan.
“It can bring a few minor challenges in some places we play,” he told us. “I remember Declan and I playing in Germany and some of the audience didn’t understand why we were called The 4 Of Us when only having two people on stage. Some people booking tickets to see us via Ticketmaster had some problems too. They would ring up and say, “two tickets for The 4 Of Us,” and the booker at the other end, who hadn’t heard of us, would reply, “surely you mean four tickets for four of you?” It can get complicated at times, but it’s funny.”
Sibling rivalry within bands has been well documented. The Kinks, Dire Straits, UB40 and Oasis are just a handful of acts where brotherly love has been challenged. So how has it been for the Murphy brothers? Recently, Daily Mirror NI held an online poll to try and find the “Well, I’d say we get on better all-time top 50 Northern Irish than the Gallagher brothers do, songs. ‘Mary’, which was a big put it that way,” Brendan joked. hit off ‘Songs For The Tempted’, “We’re a bit more passive aggres- came in at number 24; a feat that sive when we’re having a disa- Brendan wasn’t even aware of, greement. Instead of a punch-up until we told him! during rehearsals I might just make the one cup of tea for “You’re joking? I honestly had myself instead of the two. We’re no idea!” replied a genuinely brothers, so we do have our shocked Brendan. “For a song moments, but we’re a bit more that’s 26 years of age people ask civilised about it compared to the if we ever get tired of playing it. So it speaks for itself that people considered voting for Chemistry it; that’s amazing. I guess time Forever the optimist, Brendan has been good to it because we prefers to look on the positive didn’t lay too much on there; it’s aspects of being in a band with just a catchy tune with a couple a brother. “People tend to look of acoustic guitars and touch of at the downsides but there are strings. There’s nothing there to many upsides: one being the really confine it to a decade and chemistry that family can bring to it’s been good to us.”
Newry band ‘The 4 of us’ who will be playing an acoustic set at the Alley Theatre in Strabane on the 23rd May.
“We’re a bit more passive aggressive when we’re having a disagreement. Instead of a punch-up during rehearsals I might just make the one cup of tea for myself instead of the two. We’re brothers, so we do have our moments, but we’re a bit more civilised about it compared to the Gallaghers, or even the Everly Brothers, who didn’t get on particularly well at times, I believe.
”
‘Mary’ continues to be a live favourite and was even used in an episode of the first series of Sky One comedy ‘Moone Boy’. “It was the episode where the local ladies of Boyle were campaigning for Mary Robinson and her charge for the Irish Presidency, appropriately enough,” Brendan laughed. “We get calls all the time for ‘Mary’ to be used in television and films. We own the publishing so it’s good every way you look at it. When Declan and I play it acoustically, like we will in Strabane, that’s just how it was written, with Declan and I sitting in a room with two acoustic guitars trying to write something that would be fully realised with just those two instruments. It wasn’t ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, where it needed developed and had different sections. The way we demoed it is the way it sounded on the record. We had a lot of big production tracks on that record, like ‘Drag My Bad Name Down’, so it was a bit of a shock to us that ‘Mary’ would be the song that would make the difference.”
After 25 years, The 4 Of Us have fans that have followed them right from those early days, and have picked up new fans along the way. Meeting the younger fans can be a stark realisation for the band as to how long they’ve been making records.
second time The 4 Of Us have performed in the venue; having been one of the first acts to play there when it opened in 2007. The two-piece shows, Brendan believes, cut to the core as to what The Four of Us are about.
“We did a Christmas show in Cork last year and a young fella came up to me; he looked about 23. He said he was a big fan of the music, loved the gig and added that he was involved in music himself. As it turned out he directed that amazing video for Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’. I was well chuffed but was curious as to how he first heard of us. He pointed to this grey haired guy that looked late 40s, early 50s and said, “ah sure my da has been playing you since I was a toddler!”” Brendan laughed. “So we’re getting people who have been with us down the years and younger listeners who have picked up the records from their parents as well, so it’s great and a bit of a shock at the same time,” he added. The show in the Alley will be the
“It really works when it’s me and Declan. Our songs are written acoustically, especially after we started again with the ‘Classified Personal’ album in 1999. It’s been a great journey so far, and we’re really excited about the new record. It has a lot of songs about growing up in Newry in the ’70s, including ‘Birdseye View’, which about looking at the town from Courtney Hill in Newry when you were a kid,” he concluded. So, over a quarter of a century in and The 4 Of Us are as excited and as motivated as they were in 1989. Like their songs, the Murphy brothers have stood the test of time, with a lot to look forward to and offer their fans of all ages. They’re on a roll so catch them if you can, no matter how many are on the stage!

In the coming weeks, while other parties are seeking to prop up either the Tories or Labour and their policies of cuts for narrow political agendas, Sinn Féin will be relentless in seeking the best deal for all our people. We have achieved more in direct negotiations with the British government than other parties have in decades on the back benches at Westminster. It was at the St Andrews Agreement that Sinn Féin put the demand for the A5 dual carriageway to top of the political agenda and secured the financial commitments from both governments to jointly fund this essential infrastructure project for West Tyrone and the wider north west region. It was at the Hillsborough Talks Agreement and in subsequent direct negotiations with the MoD that Sinn Fein secured the transfer of the entire Lisanelly/St Lucia base in Omagh to the Department of Education explicitly for use as a new state of the art multi-school educational campus on which work has now commenced. The political pressure to deliver the new Cancer Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin did not come about because any the MPs based in the Westminster Parliament but through a sustained national campaign and direct negotiation by Sinn Fein with the British and Irish governments and Assembly Executive level.
It was not by sitting at Westminster but at the Stormont House negotiations we once again demonstrated that it is possible to take an effective stand against the Tory assault and to deliver for the people. We successfully negotiated a significantly enhanced package of welfare protections for some of the most vulnerable people within our society while the other participant parties were prepared to accept less. These agreements must now be delivered.
STAND UP TOGETHER AGAINST AUSTERITY This election is an opportunity to take a further stand against the Westminster politics of austerity and for a vision of a united, prosperous, equal and inclusive Ireland. After the election we will be seeking an immediate negotiation with the incoming British Government t to secure a workable budget including the reinstatement of £1.5bn to the budget to support job creation and the delivery of strong public services.
A vote for Sinn Féin will strengthen our hand.

A5 to be placed at the top of the political agenda
A5 DUAL CARRIAGEWAY
The A5 road is a hugely important infrastructure project that will provide much-needed jobs for this region. Pat Doherty signalled his intent to ensure the A5 was placed at the top of the political agenda in May 2006 when he brought together MPs, MLAs, TDs and Councillors from Donegal, Tyrone, Derry, Fermanagh, Monaghan, Louth and Meath to officially launch a co-ordinated all-Ireland party campaign on the issue and has subsequently ensured the issue has remained centre stage of the political agenda. Despite various setbacks including a Court Challenge, withdrawal of Irish government funding and opposition from political unionism, Pat has ensured it has remained an Executive priority in the
STANDING UP FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES Pat consulted closely with farmers and the wider rural community to ensure a fair and effective CAP reform package for West Tyrone.
This has resulted in a more equal system for the distribution of Single Farm Payments and includes a Young Farmers Scheme, along with a well-funded Farm Business Improvement Scheme. The new Rural Development Programme pro-
vides unprecedented opportunities for community development and business growth in rural areas. During the CAP negotiations and following their outcome, Pat engaged directly with rural stakeholders and hosted public meetings in communities such as Cranagh, Creggan and Aghyaran. These were attended by hundreds of farmers and rural dwellers and included addresses from Agriculture Minister Michelle O Neill, Martina Anderson MEP and senior officials from DARD.

Mini Comedy Fringe Festival – Badly Cut Fringe Saturday 20th June
June Events: Gutz
Thursday 11th – Saturday 13th June The Alley Theatre proudly presents the amazing and brand new musical ‘Gutz’ from composer David Oliver featuring a star studded cast, phenomenal 10 piece live band and an extensive chorus. Casey (Kit) Carson is a strong, fiercely independent, highly intelligent and very attractive 23 year old from Boise, Idaho. As she works within the ranks of Davis Power Inc, she ambitiously envisages an eventual position within New York City’s business elite. In the cosmopolitan hotbed of a 21st century city, where success sees no colour or gender, Casey has left her quaint hometown at just the right time - or has she? ‘Gutz’ is an explosive, highly charged musical exploration of the seductive, hedonistic and deceptive nature of life in a metropolis, where the surface of ‘progress’ and ‘yes we can’ idealism hides the harsh reality that the more things change the more they stay the same. The themes of love, harassment, infidelity and personal struggle intertwine to reveal a story reflective of the times we now live in. This promises to be an explosion of dance, drama & music.

Now we’re running around with them, swimming with them, and it’s much more fun. It’s really important to us because you don’t get those times back. We both love walking and have climbed the highest peak in Mid Wales twice. Chris also enjoys cycling and finds a round of golf much easier nowadays.
With the help and support of their Slimming World group, Lesley Hutchinson and her partner Chris Coulter, have lost nearly 22st between them (with Chris losing more than half his body weight!) Now, the couple have plans to travel the world and have compiled a ‘slim list’ of things they plan to do to celebrate their amazing achievement. “Our weight problems started around 15 years ago when we stopped smoking and replaced cigarettes with snacks like crisps, sandwiches and pies” says Chris. “Around the same time we got a second car so didn’t need to walk places anymore. Then when the kids – I have two daughters and Lesley has one daughter from previous relationships – left home we fell into the habit of eating more takeaways and washing them down with a bottle of wine.’ “In 2010 I was left mortified after a wooden chair collapsed beneath me at a family barbecue. The garden furniture broke into pieces and cut my leg, which became infected and I got nasty ulcers. Soon after, I suffered further embarrassment when Lesley and Chris now! I was unable to fit into a hotel shower and I had to request a new room. So when my doctor, who was a Slimming World member herself, recommended I started to worry that I might actually lose my leg. I join my local group, I decided losing weight was I knew I had to do something about my weight. my only option. I was embarrassed and worried because I thought I’d be the only man in a roomful of women, so Lesley agreed to come with me. As soon as we walked through the doors though, we were warmly welcomed and made to feel comfortable – it was nothing like we’d expected. Now I can’t wait to go to group every week. Lesley says “We swapped our takeaways for healthy home-cooked meals like homemade cheese burgers and Slimming Worldstyle chips or curries.

Claire & Shannon are Strabane’s Young Slimmers of the Year! Slimmers Claire Beattie and Shannon Gibson are celebrating after losing at total of 5st 5lbs between them in just 8 months and being named Strabane’s top young slimmers. 21-year-old Claire and 16-year-old Shannon were voted Young Slimmers of the Year 2015 by their fellow members at the Strabane Slimming World group, held at Murphy’s on the Green which they attend every week. Now, as well as looking fab they are both feeling fitter and healthier. The competition celebrates Slimming World’s younger members, recognising 16 to 21 year olds who’ve transformed their lives by adopting healthier eating habits and getting active. More and more people are becoming overweight, with around two in three adults and 15 per cent of young people in the UK now classed as overweight or obese. Research shows that overweight teenagers are likely to continue to struggle with their weight as adults and develop weight-related conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol*. So Claire and Shannon’s weight loss and healthy lifestyle isn’t just great for their health now but for their future wellbeing too.

Royal Opera House Design win for North West Regional College student
WEEKEND DATES AT
WEEKDAY RATES 1 Night Bed & Breakfast

Royal Opera House costume Design winner Michelle McGonagle, is joined by Colin McKeown (right), NI Regional Manager with Irish Design 2015, and (from left) Sheila O’Brien, NWRC Curriculum Manager, and Mary Harrigan, NWRC Course Co-ordinator, and Basil Dalton, Head of School for Media, Multimedia and Art Basil Dalton.
A fashion student from Strabane has scooped a major design prize for her costume inspired by the Royal Opera House production of Madama Butterfly. Michelle McGonagle is a HND Fashion & Textile student at North West Regional College’s (NWRC) Strand Road Campus, and is the second student from the College to win this prestigious accolade – Limavady student Carla Heron picked it up last year. To win the award two years in a row in quite an achievement given that National Skills Academies from across the UK took part in the Design Challenge. From 455 entries at 16 colleges, 48 finalists were selected to be exhibited in the Crush Room, Paul Hamlyn Hall, including Michelle and two students from the Limavady Campus. The challenge required the students to focus on Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s production of Puccini’s poignant opera, Madama Butterfly. The Competition now in its fifth year, gives students from Creative and Cultural Skills Academy Colleges an exclusive opportunity to test and develop their marketing, production and design skills. This year the design challenge has grew to include new partnerships, and digital elements. Students this year have both worked alongside peers in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, tackling the challenge of a production that has the eastern and western cultures meeting on the same stage. The exhibition contained work from Amersham and Wycombe, Barking & Dagenham College, Belfast Metropolitan College, Cardiff & Vale College, Gateshead College, Grimsby Institute, Havering College, Kensington & Chelsea College, Leeds City College, LeSoCo, North Hertfordshire College, North West Regional College, South Essex College, Stoke-on-Trent College and Sussex Downs College.

finalist in the marketing section of the competition. As a winner Michelle will have the chance to attend a tailor-made behind the scenes experience at the Royal Opera House that relates to their specialism. This is a fantastic opportunity to visit the backstage areas of the theatre and meet top professionals in their field. Head of School for Media, Multimedia and the Arts, Basil Dalton congratulated Michelle on her success. “We are very proud of Michelle, and her peers who reached the final stages of this competition. For our College to retain the top costume design award for a second consecutive year is testament to the talent of our students, and to the high standard of teaching within our team. We are thrilled to Finalist see Michelle’s stunning work recognised in Michelle’s fellow NWRC Strand Rd campus this way, and we are sure this will be the first colleague Kristaina Stankyte was also a of many accolades in her fashion career.”

Wonderful Vietnam Some time ago I visited Vietnam. I wanted a taste of eastern culture so I browsed holiday brochures to see what was on offer. I looked at China and Thailand however something lured me to give Vietnam a go and I am so glad I did. The flight took me from Dublin to Abu Dhabi and then to Singapore. That took some 7 hours. I then flew from Singapore to Hanoi in Northern Vietnam. The weather in Hanoi was good however much chillier than I had anticipated so I found myself with the ‘wrong clothes’ as I was expecting it to be hotter than it was. Hanoi is fascinating, extremely busy and everyone in the city seems to ride a motorbike or scooter. The hustle, bustle and noise of everyday life in Hanoi is something else. Whilst there I visited the usual tourist sites including the infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton where American prisoners were kept during what the Vietnamese call the ‘American war’ in Vietnam.

Beautiful scenery at Da Nang
Vietnam for about 100 years and they too left their mark. This mixture of cultures has created a unique cuisine and eating out in Hanoi is a real treat. The Vietnamese pride in creating beautiful meals with fresh ingredients, exotic fruits and of course the lotus flower. This national symbol is grown in water and its seeds are served with most meals in season and are quite delicious.
After Hanoi I visited Halong Bay which translates as ‘where the dragon descends to the sea’ and legend claims a great dragon from the mountains came down and created its many islands as it’s flashing tail gouged out valleys and crevasses which filled with water leaving many large pinnacles seemingly rising from the sea. Here you can find communities of people permanently living and rearing families in small boats and it makes you wonder how on earth such an existence is possible. I travelled then to more beautiful places namely Da Nang which is half way between The ‘Hanoi Hilton’ Prison. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An, once Chinese culture has had a great influence in a major port and now a delightful place with Vietnam as I learned China ruled the country grand architecture and beguiling river setfor some 1000 years. The French also ruled tings.
From there I reached Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon, which some people call it and noticed a difference in what the natives thought of their great leader. It seemed to me that the hero of northern Vietnam was not just so popular in the south however few expressed such sentiments in public. The war has left a great mark in Vietnam as it was bombed for some 20 years. The Viet Cong in places such as Cu Chi resorted to living in small underground tunnels and these too are a sight to see. They survived there from during the French occupation until the Americans discovered them in the early 1970s some 30 years later. It is quite amazing the resilience of human beings. All in all Vietnam is a great place to visit and the people are friendly and helpful. The food is first class however spirits and imported wine tend to be really expensive so if you need to drink stick to local beers which are very reasonably priced indeed. Until the next time Tom Herron

David Oliver has made his mark as musician in his own right over recent years. Never one to rest on his laurels, the Strabane man has been engrossed in his latest project for over a year now: the writing and arranging of a musical. An upbeat, refreshingly modern musical, ‘Gutz’, based in New York City, follows the highs and lows of graduate interns as they dare to dream and make it big in the ‘Big Apple’. The production features a 10 piece live band and will include a series of new David Oliver compositions, plus numerous tracks from his back catalogue. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ in between rehearsals, David revealed that he is no stranger to working in musicals, and it was that experience that inspired him to work on his own. “Working in musicals gave me a good idea about what I wanted to present, and, perhaps more importantly, what I didn’t want to present. A lot of shows can be very patronising to young people, particularly females and I wanted to avoid that. The characters here are very strong and I wanted to do something far removed from the skirt-twirling love struck musical cliché,” he explained. In the show, Casey (Kit) Carson is a strong, fiercely independent, highly intelligent and very attractive 23 yearold from Boise, Idaho. As she works within the ranks of Davis Power Inc, she ambitiously envisages an eventual position within New York City’s busi-
ness elite. In the cosmopolitan hotbed of a 21st century city, where success sees no colour or gender, Casey has left her quaint hometown at just the right time - or has she? “A lot of modern day issues come to the fore: issues that many would think were resigned to the past, like gender inequality. The female characters are quite strong and I wanted to get across that sense of empowerment but also wanted to highlight the pitfalls and the nitty gritty world that’s out there in the competitive world. A lot of young people face that world when they step out of school or university. Life is not all sunshine and roses and I think it lets people realise that very quickly. So, while the show is based in the ‘Big Apple’, there is still a lot for the audience to identify with,” stressed David. Gender themes aside, there is the issue of the music and ‘Gutz’ promises to be an explosion of dance, drama and music. “I weaved the story around a number of songs I have already writ-
ten and I also wrote some new pieces of music. I guess you could say it’s what you would call a ‘jukebox musical’ like ‘Mama Mia’ or ‘We Will Rock You’, which were created around existing material. Rehearsals have been going very well and I think we have created a very strong, energy charged piece of work that’s going to have people well entertained,” predicted David.
So, get ready for ‘Gutz’, which will feature well known David Oliver penned songs such as ‘Chasing Rainbows’, ‘No Alibi’, ‘I’ll be Your Man’, ‘American Dreams’ and loads more. The shows take place in the Alley Theatre over three nights: June 11, 12 and 13. There will be cabaret style seating with the show starting at 7.30pm. Admission is from £7.50, so book early to avoid disappointment.

Get the most out of your short break in Prague... Sightseeing Top Tips Largely undamaged during World War 11, Prague’s historic architecture has stood the test of time. Prague’s compact Medieval centre remains a fantastic mixture of cobbled lanes, walled courtyards, cathedrals and church spires all in the shadow of the majestic 9th century castle Prague is split into several districts; Hradcany (castle) area is home to the biggest ancient castle in the world, towering above the city offering beautiful views of the areas below. Mala Strana (Lesser Town) is located across the Vltava River from the city centre and offers beautiful streets and churches.
For an affordable riverside dinner, go for a paddle-boat picnic. Float down the River Vltava while the sun is setting, with a picnic dinner and a glass of wine.
Getting Around Sightseeing by foot is easy in Prague; but public transport is readily available, including three metro lines, and numerous bus and tram lines.

After two years of asking what life is like for our local sons and daughters who have traveled further afield, the Strabane Herald now looks a bit closer to home to see what life is like for our young people living in and around Strabane. This month we speak to local singer, Claire McCallan. Where did you grow up? A fond childhood memory?
Hard to pick one because I honestly had the best childhood ever. Growing up with my four brothers was growing up with my four best friends. And I’m very lucky to be able to say we’re best friends to this day. But I’d have to say every Christmas morning as a kid was amazing. Probably a massively generic answer but it was always class in our house. Waking up around half 5/ 6 o’clock in the morning and going downstairs together, with the youngest always getting to open the living room door. Always makes me smile thinking about it.
A favourite film and why?
‘Withnail and I’. It’s like oxygen for me. For something to be so hilarious and witty but be so poignant and beautiful is amazing. There are so many quotable lines. Richard E. Grant is com-
Something about Sion that you miss? I’m barely out of the place to miss it but when I’m away I always miss my family. We’re really close. And the more we fight like cat and dog the more I couldn’t be without them. Even Davy Goose. Torture.
Favourite food?
Pickled Onion Monster Munch.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen an episode, Peter Kay’s ‘Phoenix Nights’. Best British comedy ever in my opinion. Also, the ‘American Office’. Dwight Schrute is a legend.
Something you’d love to see happen locally in the future? I’d love to see more opportunities for the arts. People from creative backgrounds often have to move away to achieve their goals. Northern Ireland in general doesn’t cater for the arts very well. It’s always the first thing to suffer, which is sad. This country is full of serious talent.
An ideal night out?
A Favourite holiday destination?
I visited Dubrovnik in Croatia in 2010: unbelievable place. It looked like something from a Bond movie. We sat in a wee bar on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea almost every night watching shooting stars. Pure heaven.
That’s massively rare in Northern Ireland. I’m so proud of that fact. We all grew up together with no bones about who was who or who went where. I’m really grateful for that.
Magnetic Fields, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bowie, Joy Division, Pixies, Ryan Adams, Pearl Jam, The Shins, Ben Folds Five, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Elton John, The Kinks, Fleetwood Mac, The Cure.. endless list there. My all time favourite is Nick Drake though.
Sion Mills
Musician, Claire McCallan pletely teetotal and the director, Bruce Robinson got him drunk once just so he could see what it was like in order for him to play a convincing drunk person. Unreal performance and a superb soundtrack as well. The final scene kills me every time. I could talk forever about this film.
Favourite kind of music?
The Velvet Underground, Stone Roses, The
Sitting around a table with beers, talking movies and quoting absolutely everything with my friends.
An ideal night in?
Watching movies, playing Mortal Kombat or Mario Kart or playing the ukulele, with a nice cuppa tae. Always need tae. My needs are simple and few.
Someone who makes you proud to be from here? Again, my family. I have the soundest Mum and Dad and brothers ever. I’m so lucky to be from a family of talented, intelligent and insanely witty people. Love them all to pieces.
Something you love about Sion?
The fact that it’s very much a 50/50 community.

Did E.T. Kill Atari? A New Documentary Digs Up The Past The amazing advances in video games and the culture that surrounds them Was his Atari game so bad? As he might say himare well documented in recent years. As our streets grow quieter and quieter self, “Ouch!” Make your own mind up and check on a Saturday afternoon, with barely a football kicked on a street corner; the out ‘Atari: Game Over’ on Netflix now. interactive, near lifelike simulation of contemporary video games takes priority over most outdoor endeavours for a generation. last year, with those involved hoping to exhume thousands of dumped copies of Atari’s E.T. video game, the whole event was captured on camera for the documentary, directed by Zak Penn, and it is now available to view online on Netflix. The film documents not only the particulars of the E.T. game situation, but also talks about the video game industry at the time, and the business deals and thinking that set in motion the first big video game industry crash. That landfill — which contained hundreds of thousands of copies of the E.T. game — is a giant symbol for a set of factors that led to the crash. Gaming culture was at its infancy when this generation’s parents were kids but, if affordable, they, too, were engrossed in the games of their time. The video game industry really took hold in the mid-1970s and generated millions until the early 1980s. And yet it all seemed to go wrong, and one little plant loving alien who just wanted to go home seemingly took the blame. ‘Atari: Game Over’ is the Xbox Originals documentary that chronicles the fall of the Atari Corporation through the lens of one of the biggest mysteries of all time, dubbed “The Great Video Game Burial of 1983.” As the story goes, the Atari Corporation, faced with an overwhelmingly negative response to “E.T.,” the video game for the Atari 2600, disposed of hundreds of thousands of unsold game cartridges by burying them in the small town of Alamogordo, New Mexico. When the landfill in New Mexico was dug up
Infantalisation It’s symbolism doesn’t stop there. A modern condition that seems to be developing into an epidemic among adults is infantalisation, where they long for and embrace signifiers of their childhood. Arguably, it’s a longing for a simpler time totally divorced from the immediacy and disposability of modern life. From cereal cafes, run by bearded hipsters dealing exclusively in cereals from our childhood, to thirtysomethings obsessing over ‘Harry Potter’ books to grown men and women, myself included, hotly anticipating the new ‘Star Wars’ film, it is totally acceptable in the 21st century to refuse to act one’s age. Exhuming hundreds of thousands of unsold game cartridges that were secretly buried in 1983 is literally the physical manifestation of digging up the past. Is it so wrong? Not really. But what about the little guy who just wanted to go home?
The Revenge of
Yang and Rebecca Creskoff. The show’s 10 episode second season picks up from the season one finale, which saw Pied Piper win TechCrunch’s Disrupt Battlefield, with a $50,000 cheque paving the way for further investment and business opportunities for the fledgling tech startup. Of course, that’s nothing compared to the money all the venture capital firms are offering them now that they’re the hottest start-up in town.
The cast of Silicon Valley
the Nerds Staying in the world of Geekdom, the second season of HBO’s comedy series ‘Silicon Valley’ is now underway on Sky Atlantic on Monday nights at 10pm. It follows Richard, an introverted computer programmer living in the Hacker Hostel start-up incubator along with his best friend, Big Head, pompous Gilfoyle and dry-witted Dinesh . These social misfits live under the watch of Erlich, a self-satisfied dotcom millionaire who lets them stay in his house for free – as long as he gets a ten percent stake in their projects. The comedy series was created by Mike Judge and Alec Berg and stars Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Zach Woods, Martin Starr, Kumail Nanjiani, Amanda Crew, Josh Brener, Jimmy O.
But it won’t be a smooth ride for the gang as Gavin Belson (Matt Ross) and his tech giant Hooli are intent on squashing Pied Piper straight out of the gate. As head of Pied Piper, Richard tends to vomit when nervous so expect loads of heaving in this series! Off-screen, the team behind the Mike Judge-created show faced challenges of its own. Among them: dealing with death of cast member Christopher Evan Welch, who sadly passed away in late December 2013, after battling lung cancer. Welch portrayed oddball techie billionaire Peter Gregory and despite only appearing in a handful of episodes before his death, Welch emerged as one of the most compelling reasons to watch, brilliantly capturing the eccentricities of a visionary investor. Despite these obstacles, HBO has just announced that ‘Silicon Valley’ has been renewed for a third series, so thankfully we’ve not seen the last of what has been deemed ‘Entourage for Nerds’.

This SPORTING Life
By Paul Gallagher
Strabane’s Paul Gallagher, currently living and coaching soccer in North Carolina. Striving to be a professional sportsperson can be an intense, head spinning endeavour. It can have a major impact on the lives of the young men and women chasing their dreams. This month Paul looks back on his own experiences as he aimed for that ultimate goal for many a young lad: to become a professional footballer.
Why I didn’t Make it
Paul Gallagher with his partner.
“You’re not good enough, you won’t make it, just go home.” These were some of the thoughts I would have on a daily basis during my time at Cardiff City Football Club. Growing up I was always a confident person in life and in sports. Not to be too boastful, but I was quick, athletic, used both feet and had an eye for goal. I played on some great Sion Swifts teams, Tyrone Milk Cup teams and represented my country on numerous occasions. At 15, a scout told me I was the best striker in Northern Ireland. I had everything going for me and at 16 I was ready to make my dreams come true and become a professional soccer player. But then something happened: my head got in the way. I see it a lot with professional players nowadays and none other than Fernando Torres springs to mind. People hammer him for the downfall he has had since his departure from Liverpool, but here’s the thing, until you’ve been in those shoes it’s hard to be judge. Professional sports are tough. When I say tough, some of you are thinking, “Yeah but they make millions”, and yes you are right. But on the human level whether you are rich or you are poor, when your mind is in a negative place the playing field is levelled, and no amount of money can change that. In sports, some people are cut out to mentally
handle the ups and downs and there are others are not. When things are not going well on the pitch Paul playing for Northern Ireland. these players tend to crumble and it’s easy to see. One pass goes astray, the doubt sets in, you lose the ated some of the stress. But like any young kid I ball again and the cycle continues because you are didn’t want to let anyone down. I didn’t want to now solely focused on the negativity. disappoint my family, my friends and the people who had helped me get there. In saying that, none Now I’m not saying myself and Fernando Torres of them put any pressure on me to succeed it was are on the same level, what I’m saying is that all self manifested to a point where I didn’t want to everyone who has played a sport and been in that play soccer anymore. I would find excuses not to situation can relate to it. I look back on that time play and at one point I thought about quitting. I’m now and wish I had of been comfortable enough glad I didn’t. to just let someone know that it was getting to me. Maybe I could have fixed it, maybe I couldn’t Eventually I knew I wasn’t going to make it in have, but sharing it would have definitely allevi- England but the chance to play in America arose
and I jumped at it. I have always loved America and what better an opportunity than to play soccer and earn a degree at the same time. But again the doubts set in. Would I be good enough to play in America? The answer was yes but for some reason I couldn’t convince myself of that. I had an ok college career. If I had to give it a grade I would say C-. The aggravating thing about it is, looking back on it, it could have been an A and who knows where I would be now. But that wasn’t the path that was set for me. I had failed. But had I? One thing that I can always say is that I take pride in the fact that I gave it a go. Sometimes in life you give things a shot and they don’t work out. That’s life. However, like I said before, I’m glad I didn’t quit. If I had, I wouldn’t be where I am today: living in one of the greatest countries in the world, married to a beautiful woman, two degrees, a great career, and a great set of family and friends. Yeah sure it would be great to be a professional athlete but that just wasn’t for me. With the mental issues we have in society today, I wrote this article to show that it’s ok to be scared, to have doubts, to feel that the world is against you, but never give up! Life has taught me a lot of things and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that when one door closes another opens. Doubts will creep in and life will inevitably get tough but the big man upstairs has a plan for all of us so relax and let Him take care of the rest.

Sinn Féin the only party in West Tyrone to support motion on Marriage Equality Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle said she was proud to vote alongside her colleague’s in Sinn Féin on a motion in the Assembly supporting marriage equality. However, she expressed her disappointment that Sinn Féin were the only representatives in West Tyrone to vote in support of this. The West Tyrone MLA said, “Sinn Féin is committed to the promotion of equality and challenging homophobia, racism, sectarianism and all forms of discrimination.
“This is the fourth time that Sinn Féin has brought a motion in favour of marriage equality before the Assembly and this time was the closest vote yet with only 2 votes making the difference. “It is disappointing that the DUP tabled a Petition of Concern to block this important motion. “It is also disappointing that SDLP MLA Joe Byrne didn’t show up for the vote for the fourth time. “This was a major opportunity to send a clear message of support for the LGBT community and to make it clear that homophobia is completely unacceptable.”
