HARD PRESSED shoper owners in Navan told local councillors that unless some form of free parking was introduced at certain times businesses would collapse. The stark message was spelt out at a special meeting of The Navan Traders Association who met in Ryan’s Bar recently. The issue of parking was raised a number of times on the night by business owners who claim they are struggling to compete with other areas where parking is not pair for. The issue of the possible pedestrianisation was also raised, with the attendees telling the councillors in attendance that any moves to carry out such changes would be ďŹ ercely opposed. One trader said he was concerned that Navan was suffering an “identity crisisâ€? and that engineers were more interested in out of town developments. “Jobs are being pushed into retail parks but we need to keep the life in the place (Navan).â€? Shoe shop owner Jack Kiernan told the meeting that business was suffering because of the downturn, and parking restrictions were not helping. “Trade on a Saturday is down 50 to 60 per cent, and I would appeal to the council to bring in free parking on a Saturday afternoon. You don’t need
consultants to tell you what trade is like in the town, we can tell you and we won’t charge.� Mr Kiernan added that pedestrianistion would spell “disaster� for the town. The introduction of zonal parking charges in Navan was another negative according to one trader. “It’s different prices to park in different places – we are being penalised.� This sparked a political row with Cllr Francis Deane, who was among those who proposed the zonal scheme saying it had to happen because of the debts the “previous administration� had run up, drawing an angry response from Shane Cassells who said an alternative where no parking increases and no zonal system would have been introduced was offered and rejected. Francis Deane conceded that the system wasn’t ideal and could be looked at again. However Sinn Fein’s Joe Reilly said the time for that was at the next budget meeting which would not take place until October at the earliest. The meeting ended with the traders agreeing to work together on a submission that will convey their concerns about the future of Navan and their opposition to the pedestrianisation of Trimgate Street.

THE ESTABLISHMENT of Navan as one of the premier towns in Ireland to live will be the objective of the new Mayor of the town, Anton McCabe. Labour man Anton McCabe was elected by his colleagues to the position recently, becoming the ďŹ rst from the party to hold the chain as Mayor. Speaking after he was installed in the role, Cllr McCabe paid tribute to the man he replaced, Phil Brennan, and said he wanted to continue the work to transform Navan into a better town. “It is a great honour for me to become Mayor of my home town of Navan - the fourth largest town in the country that I believe is on a journey to become one of the ďŹ nest towns in Ireland. “I am sure that collectively we will continue to make Navan a people and family friendly town, which offers a sense of pride, attraction and belonging to all.â€? Mayor McCabe also pointed out the signiďŹ cance of his election to that of the Labour party. “It is also a great day for the Labour Party, at national and local level to hold the ofďŹ ce of Mayor of Navan for the ďŹ rst time; indeed I hope that this year the Labour Party will hold the chains of ofďŹ ce throughout the county as well as the chair of the VEC held by Cllr Tommy Grimes, of Kells Town Council.â€? However it was the future of Navan that concerned the ďŹ rst time councillor most. He pointed to the recent infrastructural developments when commenting that the town is well placed to improve in the near future. “I ďŹ rmly believe that this wonderful town of ours is ready, willing and best placed to beneďŹ t from any upturn in the economy. With the M3 and
our improved road network, sustainable transport initiatives, water and sewerage infrastructure, public realm enhancements, broad band provision and the many leisure, sporting, educational and cultural improvements, as Mayor together with my fellow town councillors, I want you all to know that.� Cllr McCabe also thanked his family for their support and his predecessor Phil Brennan who he said was at the fore of many of the major projects that had been announced in the last 12 months.

FAMILY LOSES AN AMAZING 21 STONE
Lynne before
LYNNE, 36 FROM ARDEE, Co.Louth and other family members have lost an amazing 21 stone between them with slimming world. It’s like losing two people says Lynne who loved her group so much she that she is opening her own group in the Headfort Arms Hotel, Kells Co. Meath on the 13th of July @ 7.30pm. She says that she wants to give people the chance she got when she joined eight months ago. Lynne explained how friendly and warm the group was and how welcome she was made feel the moment she walked through the door. She couldn’t believe the amount of food available on the plan and she never went hungry. She still enjoyed full Irish breakfasts, Fish & Chips, Curries and Pizzas without having to count a single calorie or portion size, it was amazing. It all fitted so well into her busy lifestyle of being a mother to five children. She herself has lost over two stone and is still losing weight to get to her own personal achievement target. She loved the fact that in group she had great support and never felt humiliated even if she had a gain. She also
loved all the recipe ideas and all the hints she picked up from her leader and other members. Lynne finds her new figure and life style changes great and attends weekly kickboxing classes combined with walking and a weekly game of tennis. She feels fitter and 10 years younger and is full of energy. Shopping for clothes which used to be a nightmare has now become enjoyable again. Lynne has just completed the most up to date training and looks forward to meeting both male and female and welcoming you into the wonderful experience that is Slimming World. Lynne is so excited about her weight loss journey that she cannot wait to let everyone in Kells in on the secret. The Simon Community Begins Work in Meath IN FEBRUARY 2011 the Simon Community employed a Homeless Support Worker to start work in Meath. Nationally, the Simon Communities deliver support and services to between 4,500 and 5,000 individuals and families who experience, or are at risk of, homelessness on an annual basis. Services range from: soup runs, emergency shelters, outreach, day centres and primary care; drug and alcohol treatment to long-term supported housing; prevention, tenancy sustainment, settlement services, training and employment projects. Since 2000, the extent of homelessness in County Meath has become a significant problem. According to the Meath Homeless Action Plan 2007-2011, the numbers more than quadrupled from 2000 to 2007. According to information provided by Meath County
Council (2008 figures): • 591 people presented themselves as homeless • One in every 274 households in Meath contacted MCC with a housing issue • 80% of these people presenting were Irish nationals. • 71% were dependant on social welfare payments. • 50% had mental health issues. • Almost 30% presented with an addiction to alcohol, banned substances or gambling. • 23 people were identified as sleeping rough in areas such as Navan, Ashbourne, Dunboyne and Kells. At a recent presentation on Homelessness to the Navan Community Forum, Niall Mulligan of the Simon Community
stated that ‘The lack of emergency accommodation and move on support for people becoming homeless in Meath simply compounds the complex issues that contribute to them becoming homeless in the first place. Through the work of the Regional Homeless Consultative Forum the Simon Community, in partnership with other agencies, hopes to ensure that homelessness can become an issue of the past and all people, irrespective of their physical and mental health needs, can achieve a home of their own. Kells to Thurles using Pedal Power!! THE KELLS Dad’s Cycle charity event travelled to Thurles for their sixth annual staged cycle event. The Dad’s Cycle for Charity Tour have to date raised over €70,000 for worthy causes such as St Vincent de Paul, Meals-on-Wheels, Children of Chernobyl and Crossakiel Young At Heart. The “Dad’s Cycle Charity,” was initially started by a group of ex-Drumbaragh GFC footballers and their friends who decided five years ago, to give back something to their local community. The 9 man group of cyclists departed from Kells for Thurles on Friday 17th June and the cyclists stayed at the historical Hayes’s Hotel, in Thurles. Local Kells man, Tom Caffrey laid on some hospitality for the tired troop on their arrival. The cyclists stayed Friday and Saturday night.
On Saturday they travelled to the Rock of Cashel, where the Queen went on her recent visit to Ireland, before heading back to Kells on Sunday morning. The group were met in Clonmellon by local cyclists who wore their club colours and escorted them for the final leg of the journey. Taking part in the event this year were Frankie Lynch, Joe Smith, Willie Arkins, Johnny Connelly, PJ Caffrey, Aidan McDonnell, Paddy Gogarty, Hughie Clarke and Tony Lynch. Support and Safety Vehicles were manned by Peter Caffrey, Michael Smith, Tommy Carry and Brendan Caffrey. ‘Health Promotion Festival’ at St. Oliver Plunkett N.S.
ST. OLIVER PLUNKETT N. S. Blackcastle, Navan, Co. Meath held a Health Promotion Festival on Tuesday, 31st May last. The school has been a health promoting school since 1999. This year, in recognition of this record of health promotion, the school was awarded a Yellow Flag. The Yellow Flag was presented to the school and raised at a ceremony on the day of the Festival. Aside from the presentation ceremony, the Festival involved a full day of events celebrating and highlighting health promotion initiatives in the school. St. Olivers has a student population of over 500 children and over 40 teaching staff. It caters to children from a very diverse range of backgrounds (approximately 35 different nationalities are represented in the school). Events on the day included a Healthy Food Demonstration by
Fairyhouse Cookery School using fresh food; physical activity / fitness workshops throughout the school given by Navan Dance Academy and Irish Dancing; workshops from coaches in karate, tag rugby, soccer, golf, skipping and athletics; and tasting of different fruits / vegetables / foods. The Yellow Flag raising ceremony was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Navan, Councillor Joe O’Reilly, the Head of HSE North East Health Promotion Dr. Nazeem Eldin, Senior HSE Health Promotion Officer Anne Walsh, Oral Hygiene Officer Mary Carr, Damien English TD, Councillor Padraig Fitzsimons, Mary Murphy of Meath Sports Partnership, FAI Development Officer Mark Scanlon, Leinster Rugby Development Officer Simon Monahan, Christina Nestor of Navan School Completion Programme and
local public representatives. A large turnout also of parents of schoolchildren testified to the active participation by the parent body in promoting understanding of the benefits of health promotion. Festival Co-ordinator, Ms. Ruth Dunne, praised the many school staff and HSE personnel who had developed health promotion activities over the years since 1999 She also praised the people who had made all the plans a reality – the children and their parents who brought to life in their daily activities all the principles of the Health Promotion project. The school community would continue to enjoy the benefits of all their good work for many years to come. Meath Golf Club joins the greats THE COUNTY Meath Golf Club located outside Trim is expecting an inux of golfers after it successfully hosted the world one armed golf championship. As County Down man Rory McIlroy was making his way around the Congressional course in America, his one armed colleagues were battling it out in Meath for the World Championship in Trim, with a Swedish competitor eventually taking the title. Irish interest ended in the quarter
ďŹ nals with Trim man Brendan Swan bowing out after defeat. The sportsmen and women who travelled from all over the world to Trim to take part in the event were given a tour of the county and welcomed by new Trim Cathaoirleach James O’Shea, who said it was yet another example to the Town’s ability to stage world class events. “It was fantastic to be able to attract the world championship and between the golf club and the One-Armed Golf Association it was very well organised. “The competitors were given tours of Tara and Trim Castle and it went very well,â€? he said.

ON THE 4th April this year the Road Safety Authority (RSA) introduced a new initiative for Learner Drivers called Essential Driver Training (EDT): This means that Learner Drivers must take 12 compulsory lessons with an ADI-Approved Driving Instructor before they can sit their driving test: According to Brendan Boyle of B Test Wise, “Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course that teaches fundamental driving skills to new Learner Drivers. It is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety. All new Learner Drivers who received their learner permits on, or after, 4th April 2011 are subject to 12-ONE hour lessons with an ADIApproved Driving Instructor and must hold their learner permit for a minimum of six months before they can sit their driving test. We issue EDT Learner Drivers with an “Essential Driver Training Logbookâ€? which we ďŹ ll in after each driving lesson, giving feedback on the lesson and recommendations in relation to how the Learner Driver can prepare/practice before their next lesson. This logbook must be signed off by me as the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) after every EDT lessonâ€?. The RSA (Road Safety Authority) recommends that twelve EDT lessons should be spread out over the ďŹ rst 6 months eg. one every two weeks. However they also say that a Learner Driver may still need additional lessons to improve their driving skills. As part of the Essential Driver Training the RSA recommend that the learner driver has a Sponsor, i.e. parent, guardian or family friend who has held a full driving licence for two years and is an experienced driver, who will support the Learner Driver’s driving practice outside of their formal lessons with an ADI-Approved Driving Instructor. The Sponsor must also monitor the learner’s progress in the logbook which the ADI-Approved Driving Instructor completes after each driving EDT lesson: On the day of the driving test, the learner has to bring the completed logbook with them as they may be required
to show it to the examiner. Live Pig Racing to bring home the bacon for Navan SVP PIGS MAY not fly but they’ll certainly race on July 17 at Tara na Ri, not too far from the historic hill where the high kings of old staged their own diversions and the race to the top frequently got quite mucky. The Garlow Cross venue, just outside Navan on the N3, is set to host a family fun day with music, craic and., of course, some not too serious but worthwhile betting in the afternoon from 4p.m. For the second year in succession, the novelty charity event will feature a pig racing marvel in aid of Navan St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), which is currently battling to assist recession-hit families
and individuals in the area. A similar event last year raised over €5,500 for the local SVP, which spent €7,000 a week on those in need in 2010. As well as aiding a great cause, entertainment is assured with six races (six pigs per race) over an 80 metre track. Punters will bet on the outcomes and hope that their fancies bring home the bacon. There will also be tote betting. Other attractions are designed to assure something of interest for all age groups. These will include a barbecue, face painting, bouncy castle and mini go-karts. Live music for the day will be by Furry
Gilbert. A highlight will be “The King Of The Human Race,” featuring locals
from the area, and a GAA legends race, starring all-Ireland winning medalists Paddy Reynolds, Conor Martin, Martin O’Connell and Dublin’s Paul Curran.
Raffle tickets will be on sale at Navan
Shopping Centre on July 9 and July 16, and at Johnstown Shopping Centre on July 16.

Parties unite in tributes to Brian Lenihan REPRESENTATIVES FROM all the political parties in County Meath spoke of their admiration for the late Brian Lenihan TD, who passed away earlier this month. Meath Fianna Fail Chief Whip and National Executive member Shane Cassells led the tributes to the former ďŹ nance minister who died after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer. Cllr Cassells said that the deterioration of the TD’s health and the speed of his decline had shocked everyone. “We found out at the last National Executive meeting that his health had deteriorated and he would struggle to fulďŹ l his duties as a TD, but everyone was shocked when we heard the news.â€? Cllr Cassells said he would remember his last meeting with Brian Lenihan fondly. Meath Senator Thomas Byrne said he was a political giant who would be irreplaceable. “I am very sad to hear of the passing of my good friend and colleague, Brian Lenihan TD. “He was, in my opinion, the outstanding politician of his generation and his passing will be loss to not only our party Fianna FĂĄil but to Irish politics in general. “I was proud and honoured to have seconded his nomination for the Leadership of Fianna FĂĄil. “My thoughts and the thoughts of all Meath Fianna FĂĄil members are with his wife, Patricia, his children Tom and Claire and the entire Lenihan Family.â€? Meath West TD Damien English who often found himself in heated debate with the former minister as part of his role on the Fine Gael ďŹ nance front bench said that despite their regular sparring sessions, he held him in the highest regard. “Brian Lenihan’s death is a tragic loss for man
so young. He was a good constituency TD for his area and a big player in politics. He will be missed and it’s very tragic for his family. “While we didn’t always agree, Brian was good opponent who you could argue and it was always about the issues. “I shadowed him in Finance and before that when he was Minister for Children where he was very approachable and willing to take on ideas (but) obviously he was harder to convince in Finance. Cookeing on comedy gas LAUGHTER, they say, is the best medicine but what if you are the man people come to for this prescription? And what then if you are of the new breed of comedian that mines your material the more shocking side of life. The Frankie Boyles’ of this world are outrageously popular but are not everyone’s cup of tea due to their x-rated patter. Kells man Fred Cooke does not fall into this category, but despite his reluctance to deliver a tabloid bating show, he has been able to carve a career for himself with a more gentle style of humour, which is suitable for everyone. Fred is best known for playing hapless Spar worker Fergus in a range of adverts for the supermarket, and this has helped him develop his on screen persona. Currently gearing up for a month long performance at the Edinburgh Festival, Fred took time out from rehearsal to discuss his life as a professional funnyman. “For me it all began in college. UCD needed people to tell jokes at a comedy debate so I went along and started telling jokes in front of what might have 400 people. They were themed events and I got to like the excitement and immediacy of performing to a crowd. I started to build confidence then.” Through regular perfoming, Fred says he was able to build himself up and join the pro circuit. “I needed a lot of stage time but some really confident comedians just start. I took the scenic route I suppose you could say.” Fred says he isn’t typical in that he finds his comedy comes quite easy, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to try. “I don’t think it’s tough but it is a discipline. It’s about being organised. I always turn up early to gigs to scope out the venues and have a look at the crowd to see if there are any ‘elephants in the room’ that may need to be dealt with. Also, I never turn up hungover!” For elephants in the room read hecklers, but Fred says the lot of the comedy performer means you have to expect to “die” in front of an audience every now and again - when every joke falls flat. “It’s going to happen – social chemistry means it’s impossible to rip it all the time, but your gigs do get better. Dying on stage makes you more grateful of your good gigs. “And it’s not really like dying – it’s more that is becomes a struggle.” This, says Fred, is where the discipline comes in. “Turning over” is a phrase he says a lot, and this is what he sees as key to the comedy performer. Turning over means updating your act, because the Ardee Road man says one of the best lessons he ever learned was not to allow yourself to get stuck in a rut. “It’s all about innovation. When I first started getting paid I stuck to that routine for five months but I was becoming like a record player. I then
started to take some risks and it was much better for my act. “My style of comedy is a bit different. I don’t do dirt but can be quite reckless. There is a lot to be said for that genre and that takes work but it’s the innovation that’s where the fun is – always trying new stuff. If you don’t you become like a record player.” The Spar ads are what Fred is most famous for and like most funny men, Fergus is not too far away from reality. “One of my first jobs was working in The Chaser in Kells. On my first night, someone asked for two baby Guinness’s, and not having a clue I remember getting two tiny little glasses and pouring the Guinness into them. I took the time to get the head and everything. I swear to God, the manager couldn’t give out to me because he was too far gone!” Fred says the Spar ads allowed him to reprise his role of bungling staff member but this time reap the benefits. “You couldn’t buy that exposure and it was a risk in the sense that it doesn’t take a lot for Irish people to take a disliking to something, but the ads were very popular.” Coming into the summer, the 30-year-old is focused totally on the Edinburgh Festival where hundreds of careers have been made. He is putting the finishing touches to his one man show ‘Comfort and Chaos’ but is, by his own admission, playing his cards close to his chest. After that he will return to Ireland to work on “a few” projects he has lined up, but stand-up will remain his bread and butter.

Public help in spending review sought HELPING THE government with ideas on where public spending should be reformed could make a big difference, according to a Meath TD. Labour’s Dominic Hannigan says that if Meath people play a full part in spending reform the government better value can be achieved. “Our country is facing major challenges but we are all in this together and we need to work together to come up with solutions. This is a chance for ordinary people to put forward their ideas on how we can make savings while still delivering public services.
It’s an opportunity to give your views on what the role of various bodies and agencies should be and how things could be reformed or reorganised in more cost effective ways,” said Hannigan. Deputy Hannigan said there has been an overwhelming positive response to the Government’s public spending reform initiative. “The day after the announcement there was over 400 hits on the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform’s website. There are up to 40 categories where people can submit their ideas for ending wasteful practices, identifying schemes or programmes that offer poor value for money or suggesting areas where staff could be freed up for other duties.” Deputy Hannigan encouraged anyone with well considered ideas to make their views known. “The Government has said such is the state of the country’s finances that no reasonable proposal will be ignored. Sometimes people can feel helpless in the face of such a complex economic crisis. And despite being on the receiving end of the narrators barbed comments, the band are taking their latest television performance in their stride. The popular Kells ďŹ ve piece who have built a solid reputation around the country in the last ďŹ ve years through gigs and chart success answered the call of a friend who had to provide entertainment as part of his participation in the ridiculously successful food programme, and suffered the traditional tongue-in-cheek comments from the contestants and voiceover man, comedian Dave Lamb. Speaking to the Meath Herald, Podge McNamee laughed off the comments of FireďŹ ghter Keith Murphy who on seeing the band appear as contestant Darragh McCausland’s entertainment said; “when the doors opened I was laughing to myself because it was like the freak of nature, he had they stored them under the stairs and just fed them bread and water.â€? “It was grand, but despite ďŹ lming for a whole day we were only on for about ďŹ ve seconds,â€? said Podge, ruling out a future career as dinner party entertainers. “I haven’t really had a chance to watch it back but it is bizarre how impressed people are that we were on the show. They are asking how he was able to get us on but it is because we are good friends,â€?
“We ďŹ lmed the programme in March and had to hide in the room for about two hours until he opened the door and we could play.â€? The band performed their last single, ‘Ants’ but very little of it made the ďŹ nal cut. Despite their eeting appearance the main work goes into festival performances, with Podge revealing they are scheduled to appear at both Oxygen and Electric Picnic. “We last played Oxygen in 2008 which was great and there is still talk of Electric Picnic. Oxygen gets the bigger names but Electic Picnic is more eclectic and chilled out – it has a community vibe that we really enjoy.â€? Successful Solstice Festival
NAVAN TOWN was transformed into a buzzing hive of arts activity for the Solstice Festival. The 2nd annual festival of its kind in celebration of the Summer Solstice was presented by Solstice Arts Centre in partnership with like minded local businesses, artists and individuals in the spirit of collaboration and community who came together to programme a varied programme of theatre, visual arts and music. Collaborators included Solstice Arts Centre, The Happy Bear Café, Earl’s Kitchen, Beggy’s Bar, Tara na Ri, Oulala Productions, Meath Arts Group, Rehabcare, Navan Library and many others. One of the highlights of the festival was the Solstice Parade where over 800 school goers led by the Youthreach Progression Samba Band took to the streets of Navan in an array of colour, spreading much-welcomed joy to passerby’s. The children from local schools had been working very hard over the past couple of weeks
making colourful accessories and props of very high standards for the parade. One of the most talked about events of the festival was the ‘Fiddling Foxes’ and ‘Leaping Salmon’ from renowned street theatre company Bui Bolg who literally leapt upon unsuspecting Saturday afternoon shoppers. The festival was a great success as there was a marked increase in attendance to events at this year’s festival compared with the inaugural festival last year. It is hoped that the Solstice Festival will continue to flourish and grow in future years to involve a further diverse range of arts events that will create a vibrancy of spirit throughout the town and county. Well its that time again to have a read of my article and get some useful tips to make your life one that is balanced and healthy. In my job I train a lot of women of all ages and bodyshapes. When meeting them for the first time I like to ask them what they would like to achieve and what their goals are? Some would reply with “ I want to change my bodyshape, I walk a lot and find myself very active but my bodyshape has always stayed the same…..” So in this months article I want to talk about the benefits of weight training in women … Happy Reading.
THE BENEFITS OF STRENGHT TRAINING FOR WOMEN The benefits of strength training for women are so powerful! Strength training has been overlooked as a viable weight loss method for way too long. Women are beginning to realise just how important a proper strength training routine is for their overall health. Below are some important benefits that women will get from training with weights. 1. Increased Metabolic Rate - Here is one of the most important benefits of strength training for women. We always want to discover the secrets to weight loss… well here is the first secret! Strength training increases your metabolic rate by increasing the calories you burn on a daily basis. The more calories you burn, the more chance you have to drop body fat. 2. Increasing and Restoring Bone Density - Strength training prevents and

As a general rule, pain of recent onset (30 days) tends to respond fastest, while chronic conditions (over 6 months) require longer courses of treatment. Most patients experience good improvement within the first few (1-3) treatments and continue to improve thereafter. The scientific explanation for how acupuncture treats pain is that it releases the body’s own pain killers (Endorphins), and suppresses inflammation (caused by Prostaglandins). Also, by promoting

Yes, if you train for hours and hours and dedicate your life to becoming a bodybuilder you can bulk up. 4. With that said, for every pound of lean muscle mass that you have, you burn 35-50 calories per day! 5. Injury Prevention - Strength training strengthens our muscles and tendons. The stronger we are the less chance there is of an injury. This is especially important as we grow older. 6. Improved Balance - Especially important as we grow older. Strength training builds a strong foundation. Strengthening our legs and core section means an increase in overall balance and coordination. 7. Decreased Risk of Coronary Disease - Strength training can reduce your blood pressure. It can also decrease your cholesterol levels. These benefits of strength training for women alone are a great reason to begin your programme today. 8. Feeling Better and Looking Better - I don’t think it is much of a secret that we all want to look great. We are all searching for ways to look young. Bronzer gets our gold medal this Summer SUMMERTIME AND the living is…well generally a little on the chilly side if you are in Ireland but that shouldn’t stop you going for a lovely summer makeup during July and August. Everyone looks great with a bronzed sun kissed look and thankfully we all don’t have to head to the Med to achieve it, although if you are going on hols this year then this will be right up your street. When aiming for this style of makeup think gorgeous California girls, think J. Lo and Jennifer Aniston who are big fans of this look. Although I am going to deal with the face, if you are looking for a glow this summer make sure to do the whole body, if you are not confident with self tanning
products go half way and try one of the gradual holiday skin moisturisers. With a nice clean face apply a light tinted moisturiser; they usually have lovely sheer finish and are ideal for this look. Avoid the setting powder here and if concealer is required make sure to use sparingly. For day time, waterproof mascara is sufficient on the eyes with a little matt shadow brushed through the brow. For night time the options are endless. I love cream based shadows for summer looks. Place a nice cream bronze or gold shadow on the eye lid and just under the lower lash line using your ring finger or a brush. You can smudge a darker shadow / eyeliner in brown or black along the lash line or you can be daring go for a gorgeous summer gel liner in aqua or turquoise, add a flick for extra drama. The secret to summer makeup is that dewy sun kissed look and in this regard bronzer is your best friend so don’t hold back and try and get one with a nice shimmer to it. Cover all the area’s the sun would naturally hit, i.e. the forehead, temples, check bone’s nose and chin. Add a nice coral blush on the apple of the cheek then for the lip add a clear gloss or soft peach/pink. If it’s an evening look then how about a dramatic fuscia pink lipstick as colour clash is right on trend this season. All that’s needed now is soft curled hair, that maxi dress and pair of wedges and you are ready to go. AT LONG last the solitary reign of the skinny jean is over! While some reluctantly peel off their beloved skinnys, others are racing to the highstreet to acquire the latest form of denim fashion, the flare. I, for one, am in that bustling line of frenzy, for the skinny jean and I were never friends. Yes, while I was an avid admirer of those who modelled the skinny jean with elegance and style, I was also one who did not carry the necessary ‘genes’ (excuse the pun) to wear the ‘jeans’. I am very much a believer in wearing what suits your body shape and as I have a very good understanding of my own shape, alas, the skinny jean and I were destined never to meet. I am vertically challenged or ‘fun-sized’- as I have been reffered to lovingly before. This alone does not eliminate me from wearing the skinny jean. No, I have seen and worked with ladies of equal height who strutted proudly about in their skinny jeans, whose petite legs appeared longer and indeed whose height looked slightly taller. How can this be you may ask? Well, it’s all down to body proportions. Those petite ladies who rocked the skinny jeans were lean in stature and mostly of a straight body shape. Those of a straight or rectangular body shape are fortunate enough to have very balanced,equally proportioned limbs. The slim, lean legs of one with a straight body shape has the ability to wear jeans as tight as the Taoiseach’s pockets and yet may look to have legs as long as any model. I myself face the combination of having an hourglass figure but on a petite scale!(That’s the diplomatic way of explaining basically that I have curves in all the right places but with a little set of legs!)Now, picture this if you will. Two petite ladies of equal height head to the change room of any highstreet store on a busy Saturday. They are both carrying a pair
of black skinny jeans. Little Ms. Hourglass examines the mirror over and over again as she wonders how these skinny jeans have created the illusion of a larger backside, shorter legs and a red faced woman glaring back at her. Little Ms. Rectangle examines the mirror over and over again as she wonders how these skinny jeans have not existed in her wardrobe until this magical moment where her legs have been transformed into pins worthy of the catwalk. The two women collide on exiting the change room, one filled with thoughts of fury and anger at the wretched jeans she dangles with disgust from the hanger while the other is clutching the same pair of jeans close to her chest with an overwhelming urge to buy several more in a variety of colours! Body shape is responsible for my happiness at the departure of the skinny jean. I apologise to all those out there who are mourning the loss to their wardrobes as we speak, but please bear in mind those not blessed with height, long legs or slim limbs. And to help you look past those good times you and the skinny jean had please take a moment or two to reflect on those not so fortunate Remember that one time you noticed a ‘muffintop’ spilling from above the skinny jean or indeed the skinny jean being tortured by descending down the backside of it’s wearer, thus revealing the unsightly builder’s bum or ‘wedgie’, neither of which should ever be associated with the necessary skill of pulling off the skinny jean. You know who I’m talking about, we’ve all shared a ghastly moment like that. So I say goodbye to you, skinny jean. I would have liked to know you, but it was not meant to be. If you have a lot of layers in the back of your hair it will be more difficult to manage then if you had layers just around the front. If you have curly hair, layers would make your hair more difficult to manage. If you have straight hair the layers will be easier to manage as you could just run over your hair with a straightener to keep them straight and to stop them flicking out. If your hair is curly or unmanageable, a taming process (12 week blowdry) could be more suited as it tames the hair, making it less frizzy and alot more manageable, therefore your layers will be easier to manage!

Art Exhibition To Launch Kells Pink Ribbon Walk 2011
TELEVISION PRESENTER and stylist Barbara McMahon officially launched the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk 2011 at an art exhibition on June 24th. Now in its third year, the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk and its sister walk in Killaloe have to date raised over €300,000 for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. “I’m delighted to be on board and to help as much as possible to spread the Pink Ribbon word,” says Barbara McMahon. Barbara was also involved in the second Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk, which took place in Killlaloe/Ballina last month and was another great day, with over 600 participants walking or running the 10km route. “The Pink Ribbon Walks have been a huge success since we founded the organisation in 2009,” says chairperson Penny McGowan. “Our overall aim is to grow the Walks in to a national event and we’re delighted to announce that Kinsale in Co. Cork will be hosting a Pink Ribbon Walk in March 2012.” Action Breast Cancer reaches over 25,000 women in Ireland each year who are concerned about breast cancer. Its programmes include counselling and patient support, breast awareness education, specialist nurses, a phone helpline, patient grants and other vital services. The leading artists who took part in the exhibition, which will also ran during the Kells Heritage Festival (Friday June 24th to Sunday July 3rd), include sculptors Patrick Morris and Joey Burns, painters David Duignan, Ian Rogan,
Jacinta Eiffe Faherty, Marguerite Dolan and Gwen O’Sullivan, photographer Suella Holland, glass/ mixed media artist Fiona Murphy and novelist and illustrator Oisin McGann. The Kells Pink Ribbon Walk 2011 will take place on Saturday, September 3rd and is a 10km walk/run around a scenic looped route, starting at Drewstown House and taking in the unique and scenic Girley Eco Bog Walk. Leading author and keen walker Christopher Somerville recently named Girley Eco Bog as one of the Top 50 Walks in Ireland in his new book, Walking In Ireland. Entry to the Walk is €20, which covers the administration and costs involved in organising the event. Every cent of money raised in sponsorship will go directly to Action Breast Cancer. For this entry fee, participants will receive a sponsorship form, an artist-designed t-shirt, a medal upon completion of the Walk and post-event refreshments Participants can register online via the website or pick up a registration form from Kells Chamber Office on Carrick Street. €1.4 million Raised by Navan Agent Through Auction Sales in Past Week GUNNE HELD the first of a series of planned auctions at their Ballsbridge Auction Room on Thursday last, 30th June. Of the nine properties on offer, eight were auctioned by Gunnes Navanbased auctioneer, Chris Smith. The properties auctioned were a mix of period redbricks, modern townhouses, apartments and sites - properties which the vendors wished to dispose of at the best possible price. Another property was sold by auction by Mr. Smith on Friday last at an auction held in Carrickmacross. A packed auction room included bidders from all over the country including Co. Meath. There were number of international clients too, two of whom were successful buyers. The first property to be auctioned was 9 Kenilworth Square, Rathgar, Dublin 6, a 2 storey over garden level red brick in need of total refurbishment. Bidding opened at €400,000 and rose in €10,000 increments to €440,000. After a series of smaller bids, Mr. Smith knocked down his gavel at €460,000, some €35,000 over the property’s reserve. The vendors are reported as being “delighted” with the result. Three properties on Kenilworth Lane were sold under the same hammer. The first to go was a site at with planning permission for two 2 bed mews properties which realised €135,000 having had a reserve of €120,000. Further up the lane Numbers 13a and 13b, two 2 bedroom mews properties fetched €240,000 and €220,000 respectively. 91 City Gate, St Augustine Street, Christchurch, Dublin 8, a city centre one bed apartment sold for €74,000. Staying on the Southside a three bed top floor apartment at Mountainview Mews, Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6W was sold as a result of post auction negotiations. The only property not to be sold on the day was a four bedroom
semi at Barton Road Extension, Rathfarnham, Dublin 6 having being guided with an attractive AMV of €260,000. North of the Liffey a one bedroom apartment at Linnen Hall, Balbriggan, Co Dublin sold when the gavel was taken down at €52,000. In the north-west of the country, a strategically located two acre site being zoned commercial at Woodview, Collooney, Co Sligo sold following post auction negotiations. Auctioneer David Reynolds of Gunne Reynolds Sligo concluded this deal. The following day, Friday, the Gunne auction team traveled to Carrickmacross which was the venue for their auction of a three bedroom semi, 11 Choill Darach, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan. It sold under the hammer for €80,000 exceeding its reserve by €5,000. Marian McQuillan, CEO of Gunne Navan said “we are delighted with the result and believe that the prices achieved highlight the demand for well located properties where vendors’ expectations are realistic. The particular benefit to vendors of course is that the successful sale of their property at auction is legally binding and not subject to finance.” Auctioneer Chris Smith of Gunne says the auction method is a fantastic “clean” way to both sell and buy. Both vendors and buyers can respectively guarantee to sell and buy on the day. The sales campaign is short with a three to four week lead in period. It eliminates the risk of sales falling through with a contract being signed on the day by the buyer effectively guaranteeing to complete the deal. A non- refundable deposit is also paid by the purchaser. A short closing is possible; usually three to four weeks after the auction date, the seller will be in funds.
Mr. Smith does however point out that it is important to have a realistic and competitive reserve to draw sufficient interest to attract competitive bidding from several parties. He also stays “we have several potential buyers registered with us in the lead up to the auctions and on the auction days themselves, that’s in addition to our existing database of clients. We have customers for all types of properties, big or small, near or far. People are afraid of their money in the banks at the moment and if they are to fail at least a property buyer would have something to show for their “hardearned” money rather than nursing a whopping loss. Additionally, he says that international clients, particularly Irish expats see value in the market”. Gunne plan a series of further auctions the next of which will be held in their Ballsbridge auction rooms on Thursday 21 July with reserves from as low as €99,000. Meanwhile, Mr. Smith is preparing a regional auction scheduled for the end of September and requires all types of properties, including cottages, farmhouses, sites, derelict dwellings, land and farms. The venue and exact date are to be fixed within the next fortnight. Gunne has received a number of entries already. These lots include forestry land, a cottage on a couple of acres and a town centre investment property. FAI Schools Meath 5-A-Side
THIS YEAR’S FAI Schools Meath 5-a-side proved to be a resounding success over six full days at the MDL grounds in Navan. The tournament has been the biggest in Ireland for the past 10 years and this year broke all records with a massive 182 teams from 81 schools taking part. A total of 315 games were played with 1523 goals scored (an average of 4.83 goals per game!). The 5-a-sided tournament has grown from strength to strength in its nineteen years of competition. The tournament was originally hosted in various venues across County Meath from 1992-1999 before
moving to the MDL for the first time in the year 2000. The Navan venue has also hosted the All-Ireland finals of the competition on six occasions in recent years. There are five sections, three for boys and two for girls, each based on the number of pupils in 4th, 5th and 6th classes This means similarly sized schools can compete against each other with separate sections for small, medium and large schools. The website www. faischoolsleinster.com contains a special FLICKR display of over 100 photos over the years with all the scores, reports, from
this year’s tournament as well as previous tournaments. The winners of each of the five sections advanced to represent Meath at the North Leinster Finals where they battled it out against their counterparts from Louth, Longford and Westmeath The North Leinsters were played this year on May 11th in the MDL Grounds, Navan with the Leinster Finals scheduled for the same venue on the 19th of May and the All-Ireland Finals were down for decision on June 1st at the Aviva Stadium.

Drogheda Utd players give Royal welcome to Meath Clubs and Schools OVER THE past six years Drogheda Utd. have welcomed thousands of boys and girls to play at Half-time of the club’s home games with more than 60% of the children participating coming from clubs and schools in County Meath. However Manager Mick Cooke and Assistant Robbie Horgan have recently taken the local links in the community a step further by involving the Half-Team teams in a short coaching session with the full squad of Drogheda players, shortly before their own warm-up. The underage teams then escort the two League of Ireland teams out onto the pitch before playing a game at half-time. Meath clubs Duleek, Donacarney Celtic, Parkvilla, Trim Celtic, Skryne/Tara FC, Kentstown Rovers, East Meath United and Stamullen Academy were thrilled to be amongst the first to be coached by the Drogheda players. Half-Time Co-ordinator Paul Holland explains “We always receive great feedback from the local clubs that play at Half-Time but this initiative has proven to be hugely popular and encouraging. The kids are so excited to be kicking ball with all the Drogheda players on match night. It’s never been done before and the Drogheda players also enjoy the interaction.”
