I decided to send a photo through to the website and the company rang me the very next day.

Members of Fit4Life and Lifford Athletic For some of the club’s more experienced athletes, Club took part in the Waterside Half-Mar- there were personal best performances to enjoy at this stage of the season. Many club athletes were athon on Sunday September 8. It proved to be a very successful day for Lifford AC’s Ann Marie McGlynn, who was in superb form, winning the Ladies Race. Ann Marie is making a name for herself as one of the county’s premier female athletes both on the track and on the road. With national senior medals both indoor and outdoor, Ann Marie has extended these performances to the roads, winning the Tullamore Half Marathon only two weeks ago. While Ann Marie was collecting the Ladies prize, her fellow club athletes were also out in force, with over 30 athletes taking part. In the Men’s 45 category, Bill Duncan was in fine form finishing in second place, while Danny Burns was also to the fore finishing second in the Men’s 65 category.

also taking part in their first Half Marathon, which for most was only a distant dream a few short months ago. The ability to get both to the start and finish lines is a credit to the stewardship of Danny Burns of an incredibly successful Fit4Life group. With over 100 such runners in the club, there is an old saying in athletics, you’ve got to walk before you can run. Grainne Rice, (bottom right in the pic), ran in aid of Foyle Hospice, raising up to £1000. Grainne said, “Thank you to my running partner Jennifer Gallagher and all my buddies at Fit4life, Lifford AC and especially Danny Burns who puts up with us week in week out. We would never have got to this stage without you.”

It’s all happening this Autumn at the Alley Theatre

Powerful new drama to hit the Alley Arts Centre stage A powerful new drama by Martin Lynch will hit the Alley Theatre this September. ‘Meeting at Menin Gate’ will be in Strabane on Friday 27th September.

Speaking ahead of the play’s Press launch, Lynch said, “I’ve wanted to write this play for quite a while. Whilst it’s based on a true story, some of my own experiences of Belfast in the 1970’s are in there. Consequently, I regard myself as both a victim and a perpetrator. I know people will see this as controversial but let them come along and see the play and judge for themselves.” Based on a powerful true story, the play deals with the controversial issue of victims and survivors. Presented by Green Shoot Productions, Meeting At Menin Gate follows Sam Millar’s Brothers In Arms and Ron Hutchinson’s Paisley & Me as the final instalment of the The Ulster Trilogy, a series of three plays exploring the state of Northern Ireland today. Green Shoot is delighted to announce a top class team has been assembled for the production. A rare appearance on stage in Northern Ireland has been secured for leading Dublin-based actress Andrea Irvine. Andrea has established herself as one of the very best actresses on the Dublin stage, having starring roles at The Abbey and The Gate Theatres and well as a number of leading RTE TV roles. We are delighted to have Andrea on our team.

Andrea said “I always love coming back to Northern Ireland, especially to play a meaty role like Liz in Meeting at Menin Gate. This is an intense and powerful script, and I am really looking forward to the challenge.” We are also delighted to have captured another leading light in the theatre worlds of New York and Dublin, Belfast man, Director, Matt Torney. Commented Matt, “This play tackles questions that are vital to the future of peace in Northern Ireland, such as: How do we cope with the legacy of violence? How do we define victims and perpetrators? And is forgiveness possible in the face of such grief.” As well as Andrea, Matt will be working with the very best of Belfast actors Marty Maguire (Dancing Shoes, Chronicles Of Long Kesh), James Doran (Brothers In Arms, The Christening) and Maria Connolly (Scenes From A Big Picture, Dancing Shoes). Meeting at Menin Gate explores the world left behind by the Troubles in which politicians endlessly debate whether Northern Ireland should have a Truth Commission. Attending a cross-community Peace and Reconciliation tour of World War I battle sites, LIZ a protestant nurse, meets TERRY, an ex IRA gunman.

Rick Swann Presents “The Extra Ordinary Ella Fitzgerald” at the Alley Theatre on Saturday 28th September.

Dublin based actress Andrea Irvine will be leading the cast of ‘Meeting at the Menin Gate’ which will play at the Alley from Friday 27th September.

In a hotel room in Ypres, Belgium, they open a bottle of wine and confront some painful secrets from the past. Will this be a two-person Truth Commission or simply raw, naked revenge? Whilst this play will examine the pain of victims, it will also explore the motivations of the perpetrator in what promises to be a powerful climax to The Ulster Trilogy. Green Shoot Productions would like to thank our

funders for their support of Meeting at Menin Gate – The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council, Department for Social Development, Community Relations Council. Lloyds TSB Foundation, Victims and Survivors Service and The John Hewitt. Tickets are £12 and available from the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444 or online www. alley-theatre.co.uk

Following the success and response of ‘Satchmo – The Music of Louis Armstrong”, Rick comes to The Alley Theatre with an All-Star line-up to include some of the most prominent names in the UK & Irish jazz scenes. Coming straight in from recording his debut album ‘Legacy’ (to be released early 2014) Rick celebrates the life and music of the great Ella Fitzgerald. With everything from swing Enjoy the sounds of the great Ella Fitzgerald from Rick to hard-hitting bebop Swann at the Alley Theatre on Saturday 28th September. scat this night is expected to be the freshest, most exciting Jazz, Blues and Bebop show of 2013. “A pre-eminent American singer who brought a classic sense of musical proportion and balance to everything she touched, Ella Fitzgerald won the sobriquet “first lady of song” and earned the unqualified admiration of most of her peers. Musicians from Bing Crosby to Benny Goodman, when asked to name their favorite singer, cited Ella Fitzgerald. In a career that spanned six decades, Miss Fitzgerald stood above the emotional fray of the scores of popular standards she performed. Stylistically she was the polar opposite of her equally legendary peer, Billie Holiday, who conveyed a wounded vulnerability. Even when handed a sad song, Miss Fitzgerald communicated a wistful, sweet-natured compassion for the heartache she described.” Stephen Holden – New York Times Tickets are £14, £12 (con) and available from the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444 or online www.alley-theatre.com

Catching up with the Strabane Ex-Pats

The Herald speaks to a son or daughter of Strabane, who has left their hometown and moved away across the world. As they establish a life beyond Strabane we wonder what memories and hopes they have for their hometown and if they could ever see a time when they may return. This month, we speak to Paul Carlin from Lisnafin Park, now living in Melbourne, Australia. When did you leave Strabane and to where? I left Strabane for Australia in January, 2012, over a year and half ago. What’s it like for a Strabane man/woman where you are now? For a person from Strabane it is certainly an eye opener. The opportunities, people, views and overall standard of living in Australia is something beyond comparison to anywhere else. Where in Strabane did you grow up? I spent most of my life in Lisnafin Park. I wouldn’t change that for the world as I feel it has definitely helped me become the person I am today - even if I’m the only person from Lisnafin who cannot swim!

Paul Carlin - now living in Melbourne Australia

A great memory of Strabane? A great memory of home would be the countless games of football I had with my close friends and brothers on the sacred Lisnafin pitch. The talent to come through such a small estate is staggering.

Obviously my family and friends but it’s funny how the smallest things become so much bigger through time. Examples would be a football match on a Saturday afternoon, fish and chips from the Riverview, an acoustic set by Paul Tully or a call up to see Fr Doherty.

Something you miss about Strabane?

Something Strabane has that your new home doesn’t have.

much more to see and do before I begin planning the next chapter back in my hometown.

As good as the people have been across Australia, there is nothing like the residents of Strabane/Clady. The way the town pulled together for Joe McGarrigle and for myself when I was ill through fundraisers and support was overwhelming and it makes you proud to be part of such a close knit community.

Something you’d love to see happen in Strabane in the future.

What important factors do you think anyone thinking of moving abroad should consider? For me, I was somewhat fortunate because I had a close friend in Darren Gamble, who helped me settle in. People come over here with the concept that getting a job and home will just fall on your lap. Moving to Australia and settling in was one of the hardest things I’ve done but certainly one of the most rewarding. Nobody will hand you out anything in this country. You’ve got to get it for yourself. Do you hope to come home and live in Strabane again? Yes, Strabane will always be home but I have so

I’d love to see a Strabane football team break from junior football. Strabane Athletic seems to be making some progress towards that and there is no reason why a great town like Strabane, with its never-ending talent coming through, can’t achieve this in the near future. Being reunited with loved ones aside, what’s the first thing you’ll look forward to when you return to Strabane? Depending on the time of year it can be anything from soaking up the atmosphere of special occasions like the weeks around Christmas and St Patrick’s Day or enjoying the few weeks’ good weather we get over the summer Next month we will feature another long lost Strabane native. If you want someone to feature pleases call us on 028 71 419514 or email: ads@strabaneherald.co.uk

The style is observational, the subject matter is life itself, and the default expression is one of utter disbelief! Lurking beneath Ardal’s mild-mannered demeanour resides a sharp and probing (and fairly mild-mannered) comic brain. Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes silly, but always punchy, he has tickled audiences all over the world. In a comprehensive set, he talks about not just the things that matter but also about the things that don’t matter at all. Which covers pretty much everything. He likes the taste of money and he likes to take shortcuts. Two years later an estranged Alice returns home to deal with the aftermath of the high-speed boy.

Reunited With A Little Bit of Strabane Rock History

scene emerging alongside the established showband scene of the time, many of these gigs became tasters for what Irish rock music was to become in the 1970s.

For decades in Strabane many have chatted about the night Rory Gallagher played in the town along with his band at the time, Taste.

“He brought in bands like The Interns, who were a soul-based band from Portrush and Teddy and the Tigers, who were fronted by Teddy Palmer,” recalls Ian. “He also brought in a band from Belfast called The Method, who were a three-piece very much inspired by Cream. In fact, just a few days ago I was talking to Tony, our old bass player, and he informed me that the guitarist for The Method was none other than a young Gary Moore, so there’s another guitar legend who played St Mary’s Hall as well.”

The year was 1968 and it has become a thing of legend, alongside Bill Haley and the Comets playing ‘Rock Around The Clock’ at the old Pallidrome on the Railway Road, or Van Morrison and his band Them belting out ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ at the same venue and the majestic ‘Big O’ himself, Roy Orbison, playing the Orchid just over the ‘camel’s hump’ in Lifford. After forming Taste during the late 1960s, Gallagher went on to recorded solo albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, becoming a guitar icon in the process and, at one point reportedly, almost a Rolling Stone. Music al folklore has it that Jimi Hendrix was once asked by an interviewer what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world. Hendrix is said to have replied, “Go ask Rory Gallagher.” Myth or not, it’s a valid reply. A talented guitarist known for his charismatic performances and dedication to his craft, Gallagher’s albums have sold in excess of 30 million copies worldwide. He died in London at the age of 47 in 1995, following complications after a liver transplant. Local musician Ian McGowan has great memories of the night Taste played in St Mary’s Hall on Bridge Street, as his band, Double Vision, were the support act. While his memories are precious, he has always regretted that he never had a memento of the night. However, after a chance meeting between Ian’s friend and fellow musician, Joe Gillespie and a Rory Gallagher memorabilia collector

The pinnacle for the St Mary’s Hall gigs however, in Ian’s opinion, was when Taste with Rory Gallagher were booked to play. “We had supported a lot of good bands at the time but to play support to Taste was a big thing for us. It was a Thursday night and it was ‘six bob’ to get in. At that time my Ian McGowan with the poster from the night ‘Taste’ played in St. Mary’s Hall. So out of the blue, “We played ok but Rory and the band were on “Joe told him that he knows a guy who would walk Joe gets chatting to this guy from Omagh about a another level. He was so friendly and extremely to Omagh for that poster,” laughs Ian, speaking to month ago and now I’m finally getting a copy of helpful. After the gig, we all had good chat over supper behind the stage of St Mary’s. Although the ‘Herald’ from his home. “At the time of the gig the poster.” I knew I was in the company of a real talent, Rory would’ve been famous enough in Irish terms. In those days rest of the Double Vision line-up consisted of Pat I’m delighted after all these years to finally have you didn’t think of keeping posters or anything Woods on drums, Tony McGonigle on bass and a memento of that night.” Indeed, he may have like that. As time passed I began to really regret Willie Loughrey on vocals. At the time, St Mary’s waited 45 years for it but a little bit of Ian’s musinot having something to mark the night because Hall was a regular venue for concerts organised cal history and, indeed, Strabane’s musical history he only played the town that one time and we were by local priest, Fr Convey. Riverine Highlight Festival Events

New banners have been located on the Lifford/Strabane Bridge to celebrate planned events as part of the Reconciliation through the Riverine project. The banners depict the themes used to promote cross border and cross community collaboration as identified by the Riverine Forum including drama, sport, music and angling.

Council. The project has delivered a series of Youth and Community based initiatives focused on peace and reconciliation within the wider Strabane and Lifford area.

A full programme of events under the various themes is planned for the coming months starting with the ‘Gathering of the Gales’ on the 6th September. The Mayor of Donegal Ian McGarvey said, ‘These new banners highlight the collaborative work between the staff and members of Donegal County Council and Strabane District Council along with the various community and voluntary groups and organisations engaged with the project. The Reconciliation through the Riverine project is entering a very busy period with events planned from September right through to Christmas and I wish all the groups involved the very best of luck in their delivery’.

Speaking about the forthcoming events the Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh said,

The Reconciliation through the Riverine is an International Fund for Ireland project lead by Donegal County Council with support from Strabane District

‘The banners enhance the bridge area and clearly demonstrate the positive joint working between the two Councils and the wider communities from both sides of the border. I’m looking forward to attending some of the events in the coming weeks and would like to congratulate all those involved in the delivery of the planned festivals. I’m particularly looking forward to The Gathering of the Gales next week and the Flann O’Brien Festival planned for early October. I would encourage all citizens from both sides of the border to attend these events.’

part of ‘The Gathering’. This is a yearlong celebration of Ireland, its people and all that is great about its connections, both at home and abroad. Paddy Harte, Chairman of the Donegal Gathering said, ‘Communities throughout Ireland are showcasing and sharing the very best of Irish culture, tradition, business and sport as part of The Gathering. We are delighted that both Strabane and Lifford have chosen to jointly participate in this national event. Their participation clearly demonstrates their confidence in the two towns as they seek to welcome visitors both new and old for the weekend.’ Mayor McGarvey concluded his comments by saying, ‘The Reconciliation through the Riverine Project offers people the opportunity to understand their shared history and look forward to a bright future working together to shape and improve their local area.’

The events planned for the coming months include the Gathering of the Gales, soccer competitions, 5km Run and Walk, Fishing Festival, the Flann O’Brien Literary Festival and conclude with the Christmas Lights switch The Gathering of the Gales festival, on. A natural ally to a local dairy farmer

Northern Ireland has certainly had its fair share of exceptional weather this year. Heavy snow in March wreaked havoc on farms, while July was unusually hot and dry. With extremes of weather becoming more commonplace, the Woodland Trust is encouraging farmers and landowners to consider the benefits of a living, growing ally. The Trust cites many reasons for landowners to plant trees, including their ability to provide shelter and shade for livestock. And with free advice, site visits and guidance on sources of funding, it has never been easier to experience the many benefits of woodland. Alec Stevenson – a dairy farmer, not far from Strabane in County Tyrone – is just one of a number of landowners reaping the benefits of tree-planting efforts. “This is the townland of Magheragar,” said Alec. “It may look pretty in the summer sunshine, but believe me it can get very windswept and exposed in the autumn and winter. The winds which sweep in off the Atlantic seaboard have little to stop them before they reach us. “That’s partly why, over 15 years ago, I grew this small plantation on less-productive land. It doesn’t take up any of the good grazing land and provides valuable protection from that crippling west wind for my dairy cows to graze. “It’s hard to put an actual financial value on field shelter for cows, but it’s sufficient to say that, for dairy farming on this type of exposed land, shelter is extremely important.” Alec’s planting is delivering a whole range of benefits, and complements a deep-rooted appreciation of wildlife, particularly birdlife. And there’s an added bonus in the form of timber. Some of the trees from more recent plantings are about to be thinned and the timber will be sold. Gregor Fulton, the Trust’s new operations manager, reinforces the fact that trees and woodland can play an important role in the general welfare of all livestock.

Local Dairy Farmer from near Strabane in County Tyrone, Alec Stevenson gazes at the small plantation he grew almost 15 years ago.

“Trees provide vital shelter from wind and rain during the winter months, reducing exposure and increasing lamb survival rates. Conversely, planting native trees is a natural and cost-effective way to provide shade in summer. Increased heat stress can, for example, affect milk yield and fertility of dairy cattle,” said Gregor. “Many landowners will be eligible for grant-aid from Forest Service’s Woodland Grant Scheme. Those who don’t qualify for government funding can apply for support from the Woodland Trust. In either case, we’ll offer straightforward advice and will point you in the right direction.” To find out more, telephone 0845 293 5689; email woodlandcreation@woodlandtrust.org.uk or visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/farming

NEW PARTY VENUE OPENS AT THE FIR TREES HOTEL

NICHE BAR NOW OPEN AT FIR TREES The Fir Trees Hotel is delighted to announce the opening of the newly refurbished and distinctly innovative Niche Bar. Decorated in a modern yet comfortably elegant style, featuring contemporary furniture, cool wallpaper, mood lighting and chic textiles, Niche is the ideal venue for weddings, family functions or private parties. The proprietor of the hotel Johnny Kelly explained the thinking behind this latest venture: ‘’We listen closely to the opinions of our patrons and it is clear that there is a real demand in Strabane for a trendy upmarket party room and we feel that we have created this venue with the new Niche Bar. “ Bookings for the new room are already coming in and we are confident that Niche will become a popular party and meeting

spot for all age groups. To complement the new room we are launching an extensive party menu which will offer patrons the best value in the North West. Consumers are more discerning than ever and they see through gimmicky price structures; what we offer is a simple price per person that cannot be bettered locally. As well as hosting private parties we are launching a season of country dances in Niche commencing Sunday September 28th with White Lightning followed by appearances by Dave Lawlor, Tony Martin, Curtis Magee and many others. The hotel has a wide and varied customer base so in addition to our normal entertainments we are also launching an Autumn Talent event with a prize fund of £2500 commencing early September. Can I just take this opportunity to thank our patrons for all their support down the years and we look forward to welcoming everyone in the coming months.’’

Come along to Derg Valley Leisure Centre The ‘Coolest Place in Castlederg’ The newly refurbished Derg Valley Leisure Centre which reopened on the 22 June 2013 after more than £600,000 of investment has proven very popular over the summer with over 7000 users to date! Welcoming this influx, the Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Ruairí McHugh commented: “Traditional warm weather usually means footfall in leisure centres decrease as many choose to engage in outdoor activities, however the new centre has ‘bucked the trend’ and the new fully air conditioned fitness suite was even termed ‘The Coolest Place in Castlederg’ during the warmer periods of the summer.” “The new facility seems to have exceeded many customers’ expectations, in particular the new gym facility which literally has the ‘Wow Factor’ as customers can’t believe the size of the facility, the quality of the equipment and the value for money memberships being offered.” The centre has a diverse range of users - from young people to old. It also has great value membership packages. The new birthday party facilities have also been extremely popular and the summer fitness classes in the new air conditioned fitness studio with surround sound have been well supported. The new autumn fitness class programme is now available and commences Monday 16 September 2013 with a number of new classes on offer.

A wide range of ‘Pay As You Go’ and ‘Great Value’ gym membership packages are also available and to help our customers get started and ensure they achieve their exercise goals, they will have the option to receive a personal programme and a minimum of three ‘One-ToOne’ training sessions at no extra charge! As the new birthday party packages are proving very popular, customers are advised to book their child’s birthday in advance to avoid disappointment. Competitive room hire rates for groups and organisations are now available and invitations for block bookings for the centre’s main hall and outdoor pitch are now on offer. For further information you can find Derg Valley Leisure Centre on facebook, you can email dergvalley@strabanedc.com or contact the centre directly on 028 8167 0727

On the inside the drama still shines at Wentworth Wobbly sets, a deadly steam press, denim uniforms and a tear-jerking theme tune sung by Lynne Hamilton: it was the perfect combination that made sitting in on Friday nights worthwhile in the 80s and 90s. Australian prison drama ‘Prisoner: Cell Block H’ became a cult phenomenon and ran for 692 episodes.

The cast of ‘Wentworth’ a remake of the classic ‘Cell Block H’ on Channel 5 10pm Wednesday nights.

After the final episode in 1986, the cast would travel the world meeting fans of the show, with many ‘Prisoner’ conventions going on right up to the present. Anyone who watched the Australian series was hooked on the weekly goings on at the fictional woman’s prison known as ‘Wentworth’, with ‘top dog’ prisoner “Queen” Bea Smith ruling in a firm but fair manner, along with her loyal old friend Lizzie and innocent Doreen.

And who could forget Joan ‘the Freak’ Ferguson, the vicious and hard-line prison officer? Well, the faces may be different but the woman prisoners and the ‘screws’ are back. ‘Wentworth’ is a re-make of the classic original series and is now airing weekly on Channel 5 at 10pm on Wednesdays. So far, the reception to the new series has been positive, with an estimated 1.7 million viewers tuning into the first episode. A second series has already been commissioned so it looks like the ladies of Wentworth are back for the foreseeable. Set in the Wentworth correctional centre, each episode explores an individual character’s back story, providing an insight into what makes them tick and the circumstances that led them to Wentworth. At the centre of it all is Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack), a suburban wife and mother that finds herself behind bars there. But who was Bea Smith before prison and how did a wife and mother from the suburbs become Wentworth’s inmate leader without rival? The series is certainly a lot more graphic and considerably more violent than the original, which may not be to the taste of some viewers but it pulls along at a good pace and no sooner does it start than we’re slap bang in the middle of prison life and the chaos that goes with it. Re-boots and remakes of old television shows often fall flat or run out of steam rather quickly. The return of ‘Dallas’ lost great momentum following the sad passing of the great Larry Hagman and it certainly doesn’t look like it will have much of a future without old JR Ewing. ‘Wentworth’, however, by its setting and modernising of old characters has the potential to grow, develop and enthral. It certainly won’t

make the 692 episodes its predecessor did but it looks like Bea Smith will be doing time for a few years to come and her development from timid inmate to ‘top dog’ will be fascinating to observe. ‘Wentworth’ is now airing weekly on Channel 5 at 10pm on Wednesdays.

The Treacherous Corridors Of Power Staying on television remakes, ‘House of Cards’ is an American political drama series and it is also an adaptation of a previous BBC miniseries of the same name, which is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. The entire first season, 13 episodes, premiered on February 1, 2013, on

ment to Secretary of State, decides to exact his revenge on those who betrayed him. The series also stars Robin Wright as Underwood’s equally as calculating wife. As with the original series, which focused on the rise of British Government Chief Whip, Francis Urquhart, played magnificently by the late Ian Richardson, the US ‘House Of Cards’ breaks the forth wall, seeing Frank Underwood address the audience during certain scenes, letting us in on his deviousness, his strategies, his personal views and his justifications for what he does.

Kevin Spacey is cast perfectly in the lead role and it’s clear he’s enjoying himself in the role of toxically ambitious Frank Underwood. As with ‘Wentworth’, ‘House Of Cards’ is a remake that can run on its own momentum because of where it’s set. The Frank Underwood played by Kevin Spacey is a scorned cut-throat world of American politics is as fluid as politician on a revenge mission the US version of House prison life, so the rise of Frank Underwood possibly of Cards - available on Netflix. to Commander and Chief is going to be both comthe streaming service Netflix. Serious accident highlights problems of parking at Dillon Court-Mc Cauley Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Jay Mc Cauley says Road Service has agreed to review parking arrangements on the road fronting Dillon Court at Church Street in the town following a serious accident which has re-enforced concerns he has received from staff and residents about the problems being posed from cars parking along the stretch. He said, “Church Street is very narrow with a very pronounced turn to the right at the top. Just the other week there was a serious accident when a car coming down from the Curleyhill direction collided into the back of a car parked on the road outside Dillon Court. This has re-enforced concerns brought to me by both staff and residents of Dillon Court who say that when cars are parked in front of the development the site lines for motorists coming out onto Church Street are severely obscured and lives could be lost unless something is not done to alleviate the dangers. Also cars parked along the front of Dillon Court have the associated problems of obscuring wheelie bins from the collection lor-

ries and this been and ongoing problem. I have brought these concerns to Roads Service who have now agreed to re-assess this stretch for its suitability for on-street parking and have asked officials to look at the possibility of extending double yellow lines along the front of the building to help resolve these problems.

At the recent Public Meeting in Sion Mills Primary School Villagers were updated on the campaign against siting an Anaerobic Digester Plant in the Old Herdmans Mill Complex. Upwards of 400 people attended, they were joined by Pat Doherty MP for the area, MLA Joe Byrne, Councillors from Strabane Council, Clergy from the village, doctors, solicitor, Teachers from Sion Mills Primary School, representatives of local sports clubs, Sion Mills Community Forum members and concerned residents. The Presentation that was made to Council last week ,was again went through, for the benefit of all the village residents and Dr John Moore gave an overview of what Anaerobic Digestion actually is. He answered all the questions that villagers thought needed to be asked, so they could have an informed opinion on the subject. All there were against this Waste Management Plant being developed in Sion Mills reasons were, Wrong Location, all the refusal reasons citied by the Planning and Environmental Agency , including Traffic, Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Odour and Vermin and Insect Infestation, Destroying

Village Character and destroying any chance of making the Old Mill viable for Tourism . The destruction of the River Mourne through pollution and the impact on the wildlife of the area. The final consensus was that we need to fight this proposal and make our representation to the Planning Appeals Committee as strong as possible It was noted that certain people, or representatives failed to turn up after it was said they had not been invited to the last Public Meeting, Invites were issued but we await the reason for them not to attend or be represented. The meeting heard strong words from Pat Doherty MP for the area, Councillor Derek Hussey, Councillor Brian Mc Mahon, Clergy, and party workers for SDLP. The meeting finished with all who attended congratulating all the Steering Group Against Waste Management Plant for their efforts thus far.

Grand Theft Auto-Tune! Bobby Gillespie, who with his band Primal Scream has been accused more than once over the past few decades of stealing from the Stones summed it up perfectly in an interview with Tim Jonze for ‘The Guardian’ in March of this year. «You could take apart any band from the past and say they just sound like their influences,” he stated and then began digging deep.

As world leaders devise new and vulgar ways to bring us to Armageddon, a few young popstars and their latest single nearly beat them to it. Fans of One Direction jumped to the defence of their beloved recently following the release of their single ‘Best Song Ever’, which has drawn criticism for bearing more than a slight resemblance to The Who’s track ‘Baba O’Riley’. Detractors were nailed to the wall and tweets issuing text speak fatwa’s dominated the twittersphere as the ‘Directioners’, as they have become known as, stood by their heroes in the most loyal, obsessive and aggressive manner. There were even rumours that The Who were threatening to sue, which made Who songwriter Pete Townshend a potential target for this curious breed of young fanatics. Perhaps aware of the dangers, Townsend went public to declare that no legal action was being considered. “No! I like the single. I like One Direction,” he insisted. “The chords I used and the chords they used are the same three chords we’ve all been using in basic pop music since Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry made it clear that fancy chords don’t mean great music – not always. I’m still writing songs that sound like ‘Baba O’Riley’ – or I’m trying to!” The pre-teen blood thirsty ‘Directioners’ seemed pleased with this statement and put down their forks and went home in time for ‘Mr Tumble’ and The Who lived to breathe another day. So was Townshend’s statement an attempt to spare himself, to be seen as ‘down with the kids’, or was

Who’s copying Who! Pete Townsend isn’t gonna sue One Direction for something all artists have been doing since the dawn of music - being influenced!

it in fact a very valid point about the limited yet wonderful musical vocabulary that makes up pop music? You don’t have to be a fan of One Direction to see the man’s point. In fact, when you look deeper into it you soon become aware that everyone, yes even the artists you adore, are as guilty of taking from what has preceded them. It was Oscar Wilde who wrote, “Talent borrows, genius steals” and while we’re not about herald Harry Styles and chums as geniuses, we will indeed tip our hat and tell them to fill their boots and steal away and for he or she who has not stolen to cast the first stone. Nirvana? You can sing Neil Young’s ‘Rocking in the Free World’ over ‘Polly’. The guitar riff to ‘Come as You Are’ shares a striking similarity to ‘Eighties’ by Killing Joke. Even the big chorus to ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ owes something to Boston’s ‘More Than a Feeling’. Oasis? We’ll be here

all day and Noel Gallagher will agree each time. One of the most influential bands of all time was the Velvet Underground and even the Smiths lifted the opening to the Velvet’s ‘There She Goes Again’ for the beginning of ‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out’, or so it would seem. In an interview in 1993 with the now defunct Select magazine, Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr insisted he didn’t rip off the Velvets, he ripped off the Rolling Stones. “At the time everyone was into the Velvet Underground and they stole the intro to ‘There She Goes’ - da da da-da, da da-da-da, Dah Dah! - from the Rolling Stones’ version of ‘Hitchhike’, the Marvin Gaye song. I just wanted to put that in to see whether the press would say, Oh it’s the Velvet Underground! Cos I knew that I was smarter than that. I was listening to what The Velvet Underground was listening to,” Marr explained. And what of those mighty Rolling Stones?

Gig Cures For The Summer Time Blues. With summer done and dusted and the outdoor concert season drawing to a close, many take September out to recharge and then see what lies ahead for the rest of the year. One of the local highlights of the summer was undoubtedly Nile Rodgers and Chic at the Venue in Derry. The ‘Hitmaker’ himself had such a great night that he promised to return. True to his word Chic will indeed be returning to the Venue in Derry for Halloween night. If you haven’t got a ticket already it doesn’t look good for you, as they sold out three hours after becoming available last month. You can live in hope though, so keep the Disco wigs on stand-by.

Depeche Mode - Odyssey Arena 7 Nov.

November sees a few fascinating gigs taking place in Belfast’s Odyssey. It’s been almost 30 years since Depeche Mode played in Belfast. Since then they have gone on to become stadium-filling megastars with an immense back catalogue and life of rock n’ roll excess a world away from their minimal electro-pop beginnings. Celebrating over three decades at the top of the musi-

cal landscape, the band recently released their 13th studio album, ‘Delta Machine’. The album has been described as their best, most powerful, gothic, twisted, electronic album since ‘Violator’ in 1990. Depeche Mode play the Odyssey on November 7, with tickets priced at a hefty £60 and £55. The band are playing mainly stadiums on this tour, so this can be regarded as a rare chance to catch them in the intimate surroundings of 10,000 people! Two days after Depeche Mode and in the same surroundings of the Odyssey you can catch The National for the very reasonable price of £30. The American indie rock band from Cincinnati this year released their sixth album, ‘Trouble Will Find Me’, following 2010’s critical and commercial success of ‘High Violet’. The album is the most self-assured collection of songs produced by The National in its 14-year career. In an interview with UK’s Uncut Magazine, front man Matt Berninger described the songs as more ‘immediate and visceral’ than their previous work. ‘Trouble Will Find Me’ possesses a directness, a coherency and an approachability that suggests The National

are at their most confident. It is certainly one of the albums of the 2013 and this is an ideal time to catch this band who are getting bigger and better by the album. Planning even further ahead, SOAK, one of the most exciting new artists to emerge in recent years, will be returning to An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny on December 7. SOAK (Bridie Monds-Watson) was born in Belfast, but grew up in Derry. She began to learn guitar aged 14, and produced her first collection of self-penned songs only a year later, before being ‘discovered’ via the Derry Playhouse’s Jammhouse in early 2012, when she was only 15 years old. Since then she has won the NI Chordblossom ‘Double A Side’ competition, been a finalist in the Spotify A&M Awards 2012, and gigged extensively. Recent and forthcoming performances include the Jammhouse, the official launch of the 2013 Derry City of Culture Program, supporting the Undertones in Belfast’s Custom House Square, the Legend-Derry Clipper Festival, Glasgowbury, Electric Picnic, Linkfest, CultureTech, the Stendhal festival, the Black Box, the Oh Yeah Centre, An Grianan Theatre, Other Voices 2012 and 2013, supporting Snow Patrol in the Belfast Waterfront Hall, the BBC City of Culture ‘Sons & Daughters’, and many more. As Stuart Bailie (BBC Radio) comments, “she manifests great talent the way that zebras wear stripes,” while Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) believes SOAK has ‘unbelievable talent, not only for someone so young, but for anyone at all’. It seems like a lifetime ago that she walked into Cool Discs, Derry during Record Store Day 2012, played a few songs and left again with everyone in the store speechless for a few minutes, taking in the brilliance they just observed.

“The MC5 weren’t heavy until they supported Blue Cheer, then they got Marshall stacks and got heavy. You could say the Stooges’ first album sounds like the Troggs! Look at side two of ‘Sticky Fingers’ (Rolling Stones) – track one [‘Bitch’] is the Temptations’ ‘Get Ready’, track two,’ I Got The Blues’, is ‘I’ve Been Loving You Too Long’ by Otis Redding with different lyrics, but they’ve done the Ike and Tina Turner arrangement of that, who supported them on their 1969 tour, then track three, ‘Sister Morphine’, which is basically a Bob Dylan song, take it down to acoustic guitar and vocals and it sounds like ‘Visions of Johanna’, then track four is ‘Dead Flowers’, which is just the Flying Burrito Brothers one, he even sings like Gram Parsons, track five, ‘Moonlight Mile’, is Van Morrison …” He could go on and he probably did! So the message is clear – put down your weapons ‘Directioners’, we come in peace and while our record collections may differ – ours being physical, yours existing on an iPod or phone – we’re both part of the same game of being seduced by those who steal from the thieves, ‘twas always thus and always thus will be. Is that Tennyson? Is that Keating? Is that me? Who cares!

Paul Tully Releases Debut EP

One of the most highly anticipated local releases has finally arrived. Strabane singer-songwriter Paul Tully has unleashed his debut EP ‘Lyric For The Lost’ and it was certainly worth the wait! It features six beautifully crafted self-penned tracks, some of which may be familiar to anyone who has attended any of Paul’s live solo shows in recent times. With a full band ensemble, including the guitar and production wizardry of Peter Doherty, these tracks flow naturally and have a radiofriendly glow that should see the airwaves blessed with them throughout the next few months. Highlights include the Jackson Browne-esque ‘You Go Your Way (I’ll Go Mine)’, with its brisk, bright road groove easily keeping the summer alive as we slip into autumn. ‘Reign Down Your Love On Me’ is one of the most beautiful ballads you’re likely to hear any time soon, with a vocal and melody as smooth as honey. In fact it’s almost an injustice to pick highlights from a collection that flows so beautifully from beginning to end. We waited long enough and Paul Tully has come up with the long overdue goods. ‘Lyric For The Lost’ is now available on iTunes.

Festival celebrates the Life O’Brien

The Flann O’Brien Literary Festival, Strabane – Lifford, Thursday 3rd October - Saturday 5th October 2013

This year’s Flann O’Brien Literary Festival, which takes place in Strabane and Lifford from Thursday 3rd October to Saturday 5th October, will celebrate the life and works of one of the major players in 20th century Irish literature, Flann O’Brien, who was born Brian O’Nolan in Strabane on 5th October 1911. This year’s festival is supported by the Reconciliation through the Riverine Project, which is managed by Donegal County Council in collaboration with Strabane District Council and funded by the International Fund for Ireland, and will bring Flann’s works to life through performances, readings, exhibitions and more. Mayor of Donegal Ian McGarvey said, ‘We are delighted to be supporting the Flann O’Brien Literary Festival which is now in its second year. The calendar of events for the weekend will appeal to a wide variety of people and I’m sure, like last year, it will be a great success. The Flann O’Brien Festival is part of a series of events planned under the Reconciliation through the Riverine project between running right through to Christmas. I would encourage everyone from Donegal and Strabane to come out and enjoy them all.’ Commenting in advance of the festival, Mary Devlin of the International Fund for Ireland said: “Building positive relations at a cross-community and cross-border level is a key objective of the ‘Reconciliation through the Riverine’ project which supports a range of community based initiatives in the Strabane/Lifford area. That is why we are delighted to be associated with this year’s Actor Val O’Donnell will perform a wide Flann O’Brien Literary Festival, which brings range of extracts during the festival. people together through a shared interest and love of literature. citizens from Tyrone. Their mission was to visit the places where Flann had lived throughout his lifetime and what emerges is a light hearted personal take on our greatest ever humorist. The launch will be followed by music from “The Logues”. Fronted by Flann fan, Justin Logue, and fresh from their European tour, the Logues’ unique ‘psycho ceilidh’ party music, which has made them one of Ireland’s most sought-after live bands, will bring Friday’s celebrations to a close. Saturday 5th October, the anniversary of Flann’s birth in Strabane in 1911, will prove to be equally as exciting for art and literature buffs, as the programme features a panel discussion on the works of Flann O’Brien at Lifford Courthouse, chaired by Frank McNally of the Irish Times. This is followed by selected readings by bestselling author Brian McGilloway at Strabane Library, where visitors will also be able to view entrants to the festival’s Doodle Pic Art competition. Throughout the festival, a series of short Flann O’Brien films, scripted by Anne McMaster-Welch and performed

by the Lifford Players, will be projected on various public buildings in Strabane and Lifford town centres. The festival will close on a high on Saturday night, with the hilariously outrageous Delicious O’Grady, a tragicomedy set in the time of the Great Irish Famine (though as Delicious admits it wasn’t that great). Inspired by the satirical works of Flann O’Brien, and directed by Cal McCrystal of The Mighty Boosh, this circus theatre piece tells the tale of a family and its demise during the Famine. It is a story of love, loss and potatoes, where Colm O’Grady depicts the story of his ancestors with irreverence, wit and physical skills. He brings to life characters that may have lived through the blight and died of it. O’Grady presents a show that is touching, hilarious and uplifting. A threepiece - Michael Farkas, Teddy Weber and Sauerkraut Seth Travins - they’ve been rolling for over a decade. They were one of the first ‘old-time’ bands that emerged in America riding the wave of renewed popularity of early swing jazz, rural folk, old-time blues and Appalachian music. 10 years of relentless touring in the US and Europe (including a tour as openers for Bob Dylan) and numerous critically acclaimed albums has cemented their reputation at the forefront of the American folk/roots scene.

Tues Oct 1st - Roadworks Tours present

Alessi’s Ark Lucid, understated and heartbreakingly lovely music from one of London’s most precociously talented singer-songwriters. Alessi’s Ark is the name of the music project of London based singer-songwriter Alessi Laurent-Marke and her revolving door of musical collaborators. Alessi’s began gigging while still at school where her self-released first EP - Bedroom Bound in 2007 earned the still teenager a major record deal and attention around the globe. The past few years have seen tours through England and across the continent supporting artists including Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and Villagers. Still only 22, her latest album The Still Life is her most accomplished yet. We love what we’ve heard of Alessi’s Ark so far and we want as many people as possible to hear her play. So, instead of charging a door fee that some people might find prohibitive for an artist that they’re not familiar with we’ve come up with a new wrinkle: There’s no admission fee for this gig. Simply come along, listen to and pay what you think it’s worth.

The Legend Of Luke Kelly The original and best tribute to the late, great Luke Kelly. Chris Kavanagh and the band began performing their tribute to Luke Kelly in 2001, selling out shows at home and abroad. Lead singer Chris bears a remarkable resemblance to Luke while his singing talents capture the depth and passion of the great man. He is joined on stage by accomplished musicians who all consider it an honour to bring Luke’s memory to the stage. Chris has received the ultimate seal of approval from The Dubliners themselves – performing with them on their 2011 German tour and again on stage at Vicar Street as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. Join Chris Kavanagh and The Patriots for a heartfelt and raucous tribute to The Legend Of Luke Kelly.

Mark Mulcahy Meet the cult musician other cult musicians call the boss. A man regarded as the finest American singer-songwriter of the last 30 years by his peers. And when we say peers we’re talking people of the calibre of REM’s Michael Stipe – its often been said that Mulcahy is the singer that Michael Stipe wanted to be. Or Radiohead’s Thom Yorke who said it was Mulcahy’s voice that made him want to make music. Nick Hornby devoted a chapter of his book 31 songs to Mulcahy’s track Hey Self Defeater. Prince once gave him his Paisley Park studio for three months in the hope a new album would emerge. When personal tragedy struck the great and good of the music industry including Michael Stipe, Thom Yorke, the Flaming Lips, the National, Mercury Rev and Frank Black convened to record a tribute album of his songs – Ciao My Shining Star - to raise funds. Mulcahy was the lead singer and creative force of Conneticut indie mavericks Miracle Legion – contemporaries of REM that the critics loved but who never got the music industry breaks. His solo career followed a similar pattern of critical acclaim outweighing commercial success hence his cult hero status. Now Mark Mulcahy and his 4 piece band come to The Balor on the back of Mulcahy’s first album release in more than 8 years – Dear Mark J Mulcahy I Love You. We’re delighted to programme this gig . Artists of the calibre and influence of Mark Mulcahy are a rare breed.

The Country Boy A classic tale of a struggle between family loyalty and the lure of far away lands. What happens when a young man works his father’s farm “all the hours that God gives” for no money or recognition? Does he leave for America like his siblings before him? Or will “The light, the love of his life” be strong enough to make him stay? Originally produced in the 1950’s and spiced with equal doses of laughter and satire, The Country Boys themes of hardship, emigration and dreams of a better life have never been more relevant.

Beatle Mal Actor Nik Wood-Jones plays Mal Evans, the Beatles Roadie, closest friend and shadow behind the act you’ve known for all these years. Roadie Mal Evans was so much more than just the big guy who lugged the gear from venue to venue. He travelled the world with the Fab Four, took part in their recording sessions and was there when they met Bob Dylan and Elvis. He was their protector when their lives were threatened in the Philippines and present when they studied with the Maharishi in India. He even lived with Paul McCartney as his housekeeper in 1967 and there is good reason to believe he helped write the title song of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. On the crazy ride that was Beatlemania Mal was at the heart of it all.

Reconciliation through the Riverine Project

Local fishing academy a huge success The Strabane/Lifford Anglers Association and Sion Mills Angling Club successfully applied for funding through the Reconciliation through the Riverine Project earlier this year. The Project ran in conjunction with Donegal County Council, Strabane District Council and International Fund for Ireland to create a Fishing Academy here in the local Strabane and Donegal District area. On Sunday past the presentation of the OCCN Level 3 Accredited IASC Guiding Course Awards took place up in Glenmore Fishing Lodge on the River Finn. The successful candidates received their awards from Lawrence Finney APGAI Ireland and Damian Mc Elholm (Course Co-Ordinator).

New Guides The new guides will begin working to deliver a Number of days to local youth groups and community groups in the area. The new guides will have the knowledge to safely guide members of the public including children around its banks as well completing the relevant first aid courses and power boating as part of their qualifications. They have also looked at just how our local river ecosystems and the diversity of life that is present along our local rivers. We hope the guides will help to promote that the river is a valuable

asset and promote fishing within the local community. They started their training at the start of April with Glennoo offering the training programme for the candidates and Sunday’s awards see the end of their even month training period. Anyone wanting to avail of the Services of the guides, or possibly wanting to take a group on the River should contact Brendan Winters, Secretary of Sion Mills Angling Club and Strabane / Lifford Anglers Association. Contact Candidates completing their training at Loughs Agency. The Club would like to thank International Fund for Ireland, Donegal County Council and Strabane District council for the opportunity to start the Academy. Coping with your loved one’s addiction

A recent report from the Centre for Social Justice, published on 1st September 2013 has described the UK as the ‘addictions capital of Europe.’

Alcohol related harm costs the UK economy £21 billion per year whilst illicit drugs cost the economy £15 billion. Alcohol-related deaths have doubled since 1991 with liver disease now one of the ‘Big Five Killers’ ranking up there with heart and lung disease, stroke and cancer and it is the only one which is increasing. As addiction and drug misuse rates increase it is estimated that over 1.5 million adults in the UK are affected by a relative’s addiction.¹ Harry Rowan is a trained counsellor who specialises in addiction and is employed by the Columba Community as a family support worker. The Community have over 30 yrs experience working with society’s most vulnerable people at their centres across Derry and Donegal. Their work at the White Oaks Rehabilitation Centre in Muff has shown the need to support not just the addicted person but also the surrounding family members and concerned persons. “Addiction is recognised as an illness by the World Health Organisation but it does not only affect the addicted person. Family members and those closest to the person in addiction often suffer from feelings of isolation, shame, guilt and fear. They are burdened with financial pressures and can spend the vast majority of their time in a state of worry and anxiety. As a result, their own physical, mental and emotional wellbeing suffers.’’ “Funding from the International Fund for Ireland has enabled us to develop a support programme for families and individuals affected by a loved one’s addiction. The programme has been operating successfully for over 3 yrs now.’’

Run over two days the programme helps people understand the disease of addiction, how to cope with relapse and how to better care for, not just their loved one but also themselves. Harry continues, ‘’It is important for family members to understand that they didn’t cause and they can’t control the disease of addiction. However, they can learn how to love and support their loved one without enabling their addiction and also improve the quality of their own life.’’ The next Family Support Programme for those affected by a loved one’s addiction will be held on Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd September at The Sanctuary, IOSAS Centre, Muff, Co Donegal. There is no charge for the programme however places are limited and must be booked in advance. To book your place or for more information tel: 02871 262407 or email columbacommunity@hotmail.com. A drop-in information session will also be held prior to the programme on Tuesday 17th September from 12pm-5pm at Columba House, 11 Queen St, Derry for anyone wishing to speak to the counsellor in confidence.
