Thousands are expected to travel to Croke Park, Dublin over the coming days -with or without the precious tickets - just to be there or at least sample the atmosphere on this historic occasion. It’s not every day you reach the All-Ireland and even more unusual to have to square up to the mighty Kerry in both deciders but team managers Jim McGuinness and Declan Bonner are quietly confident they have the ammo to get the job done. McGuinness said this week he was confident his layers could insulate themselves from the surrounding hysteria and concentrate on the plans that they’ve been working on for the past three weeks. “You can’t control that and I don’t want to control it. I think we really focused and stuck to the task last time around. It’s now a case of replicating that for this game,” he said. Minor manager Bonner is hoping his side’s ‘winning mentality’ will see them through on Sunday too. “We know Kerry are red hot favourites to win but

we’ll be doing all we can to win the title. Our boys are great and have great self-belief. We have to improve if we are to beat Kerry but we are capable of doing it,” he said. So a historic and memorable weekend ahead – last one leaving Donegal put the lights out please!

National Eye Week starts this Monday *
OFF
GUCCI Frames and Sunglasses
Free Sight tests at McGovern’s
National eye week begins on this Monday 22nd September. During this week we at D McGovern Opticians are encouraging people from every walk of life to take better care of their eyes and have regular sight tests. Regular sight tests are essential for maintaining healthy eyes but there are other things you can do to look after your eyes.
Diet
Alcohol and Smoking
Studies show that what we eat can affect our vision. Antioxidants can help to prevent retinal damage. One anti-oxidant which is hugely beneficial is lutein.
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health conditions which can have a detrimental effect on your eye health. After ageing, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing macular degeneration. Smoking also increases your risk of developing cataract.
Foods recommended for eye health include: Broad leaf greens such as kale and spinach Brightly coloured fruit and veg such as corn, carrots, orange sweet peppers and oranges, Oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, Broccoli & Eggs.
Diet Lack of exercise contributes significantly to several eye conditions, particularly amongst people aged 60 and over. Exercise may reduce the risk of sight loss from narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes.
Sunlight Protecting your eyes from the sun is very important and should not be underestimated. Under no circumstances should you ever look at the sun directly. Your sunglasses should have the CE mark on them which ensures that they are giving you the right level of ultraviolet protection. Sight test are free for many please call D. McGovern Optician and Contact lens Centre on (048) 71882506 or call in to our practices Main St Lifford or 20 Castle St Strabane. *conditions apply

Residents of Ballycolman to say ‘Thank You’ to Davy at Presentation Night It was the end of an era recently in Ballycolman as long-standing shopkeeper, Davy McNally pulled the shutters down on his convenience shop for the last time after 42 years of trading. Situated for all those years in the heart of Ballycolman, Davy’s shop has been a daily fixture in the lives of residents and now they want to give something back to Davy. A Retirement Presentation Night has been organised for Friday, September 26 at the Fir Trees at 8pm with tickets priced at a fiver. Donna Devine is one of a group of people who pulled together to plan a night where everyone can get the chance to say ‘thank you’ to Davy for his service to the people of Ballycolman and surrounding areas since 1972. “As part of our appreciation for all Davy has done for the community and the people of the Ballycolman and many other areas over the years we are having this party to show him how thankful we are for everything and we will be very sad to see him go. He has played a major part in our community for a long time and we cant let him go without a fuss,” she said.
Davy’s Shop Through those years and all that they brought with them, the one constant in Ballycolman was Davy’s shop and its absence in recent weeks has merely reinforced the pivotal presence it had in people’s daily lives. Local people have even taken to social media to pay tribute to Davy and the service he has given Ballycolman. “I’ll always remember how good Davy was to my mum when she was unwell. A real gentleman!”
Davy’s shop in Ballycolman has shut after 42 years of trading.
wrote one local resident. Another wrote, “Davy the gentleman will be sorely missed. You could always depend on him, such a good soul. Sad times to see the shutters down!” Another well-wisher wrote, “Davy I wish you all the best of health in your retirement. You have been a great servant to the Ballycolman community for both employment and service. You will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Thank You.” As for the future of the shop, if it opens its doors again it seems likely that the people of Ballycolman will have only one name for it, as one of those paying tribute said, “I think when we look at that shop no matter what its called or who ever takes over I will always think Davy’s. Best wishes on your retirement.” Tickets for the presentation night in the Fir Trees can be purchased from the Community Forum Office (beside Davy’s) and committee members Donna Devine, Caroline Devine, Annie McElwee, Hughie O’Neill and Robbie Winters.

Mount Errigal Hotel launches party nights with a star studded ‘YouTube’ hit! In keeping with the Ice Bucket phenomena, the hotel decided to incorporate their own challenge into their YouTube video, where Danny O’Carroll & Benny the hotel’s mascot dunked Carolynne & Johanne the party sales elves, however, little did Terry McEniff know (The hotel’s Managing Director) that he too was in for a drenching!! Carolynne Harrison, the Sales & Marketing Manager, thought it would be funny to surprise him with the bucket of iced water at the end of the filming, she is delighted to say, she still managed to hang on to her job after the surprise! With Donegal in the All Ireland Final, the hotel also managed to dupe Danny O’Carroll, the Dublin star, into partaking in the popular song
‘Jimmy’s winning matches’, the look on his face is priceless, I’m sure his Donegal born wife will be happy to see his support for her county! Since the YouTube video went live, the combined views have reached almost 3000 hits. This is great publicity for the hotel, says Carolynne Harrison, Sales & Marketing Manager, she said, we wanted to do something different and funny, we wanted to show our guests our personality, to give them a taste of what our party nights are all about and to show them that we are not the typical serious hoteliers that many perceive hoteliers to be, we are fun and we can laugh at ourselves!!

Big bus for Strabane October 1st Leading local cancer charity Action Cancer is bringing its SuperValu Big Bus mobile unit to Strabane next month as part of its ongoing tour of Northern Ireland. The Bus will be hosted by SuperValu and will be located at the carpark on Canal Street on Wednesday 1st October.
The mobile clinic, whose main sponsor is retail group SuperValu and its independent retailers, was launched in 2006 to help Action Cancer save lives and support people. The 18 metre-long articulated vehicle with expanding side pods, houses cancer prevention and early detection services and staff on the unit also provide information about support services. Action Cancer Big Bus Co-ordinator Seán Conlon explained why the public should take advantage of the service; “The Big Bus has become a wellknown and valuable health resource for men and women throughout Northern Ireland, delivering life-saving services right to their doorstep.” Donna Morrison, SuperValu Marketing Manager said, “SuperValu has been in partnership with Action Cancer for 12 years in support of the charity’s mobile services. We are extremely proud to play our part in the Big Bus service and to help Action Cancer make an impact on the health of local communities throughout Northern Ireland.” Services provided on the Big Bus, which is fully accessible include digital breast screening for women aged between 40 and 49 and over 70, health promotion and MOT health checks for men and women. A full body composition analysis using the latest technology provides clients with information on their height, weight, body mass index and more, and also offers health awareness and weight loss guidance.
Big Bus will be at Supervalu on 1st October.
Big Bus staff can provide information on complementary therapies and other cancer support services such as counselling, a Listening Ear Service, and support groups, which are available for cancer patients, their carers and families at the charity’s headquarters in Belfast and at other locations. The effect of acupuncture during Pregnancy/IVY and labour Many researchers show that acupuncture reduces stress. Since tests have been showing to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing your stress through acupuncture could periodically improve your odds of conceiving. Some women find acupuncture helpful to cope with the stress they feel about trying to conceive. Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility. The women who incorporate acupuncture in to their in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are more likely to become pregnant than those who use IVF alone. Acupuncture also helps male fertility. A few studies have shown that regular treatments significantly improve sperm counts and motility (the strength with which the sperm swim). The World Health Organisation has also found acupuncture to be helpful in other areas of pregnancy and labour such as morning sickness, prevention of miscarriage and correct an abnormal foetal position.
Acupuncture is relatively safe, and it improves fertility.
Mrs Siobhan Kelly I have an irregular cycle and had tried for months to get pregnant without success. I started acupuncture and became pregnant two times, three years apart, in Dr. Shang’s Clinic. I’m definitely convinced acupuncture helps! And I recommend Dr Shang’s Clinic to everybody who needs help
“Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and normalises ovulation and the menstrual cycle and that can benefit fertility.”
As a traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, we recognise that many common complaints and illnesses stem from the dysfunction of the nervous system. Problems such as peeing, stress, hearing loss, impotence, weight loss or gain, insomnia, IBS, migraine, infertility and anxiety frequently come from the same point of origin. Whilst it is important that we treat these problems, it is more important that we find and remove the root cause. This is what we term as our holistic approach to treatment: educating our patients on the benefits of life-balance, and assisting them to gain a greater awareness of their body’s functionality

Understanding Trauma and its ongoing affects on our lives Recently a delivered a short talk on trauma and its ongoing affects on our lives and whilst revisiting and updating the research available on the subject I realised that it is something we all should be aware of. Trauma is a natural occurrence in the lives of human beings. We must remember also that the traumatised person has survived whatever has happened however the world as they know it has changed. Trauma arises when bonds which attach are cut without your permission and you can become shocked or traumatised. You may no longer feel safe in the world and can feel alone and helpless. The degree of shock can vary depending where the trauma originates. If something impersonal like an accident or a natural event has traumatised you it can differ greatly from when the trauma is caused by something of a more personal nature. The intensity of the trauma can also vary when you are traumatised by a stranger or when it happens with someone you know. Trauma is greatest when you are traumatised by someone you love and trust. The degree of shock can also vary depending on age, resilience and whether or not you can move or are trapped in a position and you feel helpless. The absence of soothing is another major factor in determining how trauma can affect us. Imagine a child running and crying to its mother with a cut knee and the mother cleans the cut, puts a plaster on it, hugs and
involved in a car accident the effects on each person can vary considerably. One person could recover much more quickly than the other. Same accident but different responses can be the outcome. Trauma affects the body, mind, soul and the next generation. It influences our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviours. Trauma has many symptoms including anxiety, guilt, shame, depression, addictions, gossip, selfharm and health issues, to name but a few. Everyone who has survived trauma has had to do something creative and unique to stay alive. Trauma is also transformative. Just think of all the self-help groups that have risen throughout our communities because of some trauma. Think of a tragic event that seems to have pulled a community together for the greater good because of the collective experience. If you believe trauma affects you take responsibility for yourself. Create a ‘safe place’ and learn to self soothe. Join a group to avoid feeling alone and help others to stop feeling helpless. Do some exercise and speak to a professional who is experienced in the subsoothes the child and very quickly the same ject. child is out playing again as if nothing happened. Local Slimming World Success Story...
Super Slimmer Victoria is ‘Top 3 District Finalist’ in Woman of the Year 2014 A local slimmer has discovered less is more after losing 6st 4.5lbs and winning the title of Woman of the Year 2014 in her S.W. group and then being named Top 3 District Finalist in the Northern Ireland regional competition which took place on Sunday 7th September in The Hilton hotel, Templepatrick. Victoria Mc Daid lost weight with her local Slimming World group in Sion Mills and has dropped 6 Stones 4.5lbs in just 41 weeks. Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes for themselves and their families. Victoria joined Slimming World on 1st October 2013 after becoming increasingly unhappy with her size. She says: “ I was always chubby as a child especially when I got to the age of 7, I was always the biggest in my class at school. My weight gradually increased and by the time I had reached my mid 20’s I was wearing a size 20/22. I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable. Slimming World is completely different, I never have to miss out or feel deprived and after losing over 6st I’m the slimmest – and the happiest – I’ve been in years!” The 29 -year-old follows Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers
to fill up on satisfying yet healthy everyday foods like fruit and veg, lean meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, rice and pulses without having to weigh or measure. She’s cut out many of the convenience foods and sugary snacks she used to rely on, and loves trying out all the delicious healthy recipes she picks up from other members at her Slimming World group. She says: “My family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook for them now and they can’t believe it’s all healthy food because it tastes so good. I still eat all the same meals that I did before but now I cook and prepare them differently.I cook from scratch instead of relying on ready meals and convenience foods like jars of sauces and we even enjoy S.W versions of or favourite takeaways at the weekends.
Group Support “I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to expect. But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support I’ve received from my Consultant Sinead and the rest of the group has been brilliant,” adds Victoria. “I joined with my mum Pat.At
first we were extremely nervous, especially about stepping on the scales, but straightaway we were made to feel welcome and now it’s like a day out with friends. Mum has also lost 4 1/2 Stones. I couldn’t have done it without them all. It’s like having your own cheerleaders by your side, when you’re doing well they spur you on further and when you’re struggling they keep you going.I just love going to group and I make sure and stay every week. “I never dreamt I could achieve so much. I’ve gone from a size 22 to a 10 and it’s made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life! I’ve got so much more energy and I can do things now that I couldn’t before. My fitness has improved – I enjoy being active now rather than thinking of it as a chore. I exercise approximately 5 times a week. I go to the gym and I can’t believe I am actually running on the treadmill. I like to go swimming and go to yoga. I love to go out for walks and I often dance around the house. Before I joined Slimming World, the very simple task of tying my shoes left me breathless and washing mums dog in the shower felt like an aerobic work out but not anymore. I already felt like a winner, being

voted the SionMills group’s Woman of the Year 2014 but to be a Top 3 Northern Ireland District Finalist is just the icing on the cake.” Sinead Twells, who runs the SionMills group, says: “I’m so proud of Victoria. Not only does she look fabulous, she is bursting with energy and most importantly has improved her health. Victoria had been dignosed with polysystic ovarian disease and now the doctor has told her that that it should be gone completely due to her weight loss. She is getting married to her lovely fiance Karol next year in Cyprus, what a gorgeous bride she will be.She is just
so excited to go dress shopping. Victoria is a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women in our local areas to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but I think Victoria shows just what’s possible when you do.” The SionMills Slimming World group is held every Tuesday at The Old School Hall. There’s 5 sessions to choose from every week: 9.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm.. To find out more call Sinead on 07835 439 707. A warm welcome is waiting for you.
Brendan’s flying high after 11st weight loss! The sky’s the limit for 31-year-old Brendan O’Donnell, who’s gone from struggling to fasten his seatbelt on a plane to looking forward to taking his first flying lessons, after losing more than 11st. “I was nicknamed ‘Big Bee’ as a child and had struggled with my weight since school. I turned 30 at the beginning of 2013. I’d been lucky and didn’t have any health problems, but I began to wonder how long I could continue with the lifestyle I was leading and remain reasonably healthy. “We organised a number of birthday celebrations throughout the year and looking back I realise my weight impacted on a lot of them.A holiday to Spain last summer was almost ruined because I spent the whole time feeling too hot to enjoy myself, and on the plane home I only just managed to fasten the seatbelt. It dug into me for the whole flight and I decided enough was enough. First night nerves “Anyone who says they weren’t nervous when they first joined Slimming World, especially a bloke, probably isn’t telling the truth. Even though I joined with my wife, Sarah, I was terrified because I thought everyone was going to turn and look at me, but I needn’t have worried as everyone was so friendly and welcoming – and there were other men there which pleased me no end! I quickly realised I’d come to the
right place and I’ve made so many friends there now, it’s like having your own cheerleading squad every week. Sarah and I swapped our diet of ready meals, convenience foods and weekly takeaways for cooking meals from scratch including our favourite dish of barbecue pulled pork. “Food Optimising is second nature to me now and I know I’ve found a way of eating that I can enjoy for the rest of my life, because I never feel like I’m missing out. I love that I can fill my plate and feel satisfied – the only problem now is that Sarah and I argue over who gets to do the cooking because we both enjoy it so much. Time for a bit of Body Magic “After I’d lost a bit of weight I decided I wanted to increase my activity levels and my Consultant told me about the couch to 5km challenge, which promised to get you running for 30 minutes within weeks. I decided to give it a try and within 8 weeks I ran 30 minutes without stopping – in fact, I was so pleased I ended up running for 45 minutes because I didn’t want to stop. Working together “I’m delighted because I’ve dropped from a size 6XL and a 48-inch waist to wearing M-L clothes and a 34-inch waist. Sarah’s lost nearly 4 stones, too! It’s been incredible and doing it together has been really important because whenever one of us has had a bad day the other one is there to pick them up and keep us both on track. “This summer I can’t wait to go on holiday with-
out worrying about the heat or aeroplane seats. We’re returning to a music festival we went to last year and planning to recreate some of the photos to see the difference. I’m also hoping to try scuba diving now I can fit in a wetsuit, and I’m going to learn to fly, which is something I’d always wanted to do but I was previously too heavy for light aircraft. “People always say that losing weight has given them a second chance at life but I’ve never been this slim before so I feel like this is my first chance and I’m determined to make the most of it. I’m never going back to the old Brendan, this is me forever now.” Sinead Twells, local Slimming World Consultant, says, ‘Brendan has done really well.He has really inspired lots of members with his amazing story, his benefits have been life-changing. Our generous eating plan makes slimming easier than you ever thought possible! Instead of telling you what you can and can’t eat, Food Optimising puts you in control. You don’t even need to worry about weighing all your food, counting points or monitoring every mouthful – it’s so liberating! It’s simply losing weight with NO hunger EVER!’ Sinead also says,’Success isn’t achieved by setting impossible standards or through humiliation, it’s achieved through caring, compassion and respect for you. You decide what size you want to be and we’ll help you get there, where you want to be. At Slimming World we work together to help you look and feel great – body, mind and soul.’

JOHN B. KEANE’S ‘SIVE’ AT THE MILLENNIUM FORUM THIS OCTOBER The Abbey Theatre will be conducting a national tour of Sive by John B. Keane. Sive will come to the Millennium Forum on Wednesday 8th – Saturday 11th October and tickets are now available from Box Office.
of Sive was a huge success, attracting Irish and international audiences during its two month run. Fiach Mac Conghail, Director, Abbey Theatre said: “I am delighted to be touring one of the great plays in the Irish literary canon. In partnership with our seven regional venues, this joint funding from both Arts Councils enables the Abbey Theatre to reach new audiences across the whole of Ireland. Rooted in the social fabric of rural Ireland, Sive is one of John B. Keane’s most celebrated plays and speaks universally to us all about human cruelty and greed.” The Abbey Theatre has a long running association with Sive, having first welcomed the Listowel Drama Society to perform the play on the Abbey stage in 1959. A previous production toured to the Gaiety Theatre and to Cork Opera House in 1994. In February this year, two members from the original 1959 cast attended opening night, bringing 55 years of the play’s history full circle. The Abbey Theatre gratefully acknowledges the support of The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Sive performs at the Millennium Forum from Wednesday 8th – Saturday 11th October. Tickets are available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum.co.uk for bookings.

Sive will open in John B. Keane’s heartland of Kerry at the end of September. Then tours to Donegal, Limerick, Belfast, Cork, Galway and Wexford, returning midway to the Abbey Theatre for a two week run. The Abbey Theatre will present a total of 55 performances of Sive this autumn. Set in North Kerry in the 1950s, Sive centres on the beautiful eighteen year old Sive who lives with her uncle Mike and his wife Mena. Local matchmaker Thomasheen Seán Rua convinces Mike and Mena that Sive should marry the rich but old and haggard Seán Dóta. They agree to the arranged marriage in return for two hundred pounds but the deal proves disastrous for all. Speaking at the Abbey Theatre’s photocall to announce the tour, Jimmy Deenihan, T.D, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht said: “Sive is one of John B. Keane’s, and indeed Ireland’s, greatest plays. I had the pleasure of attending a performance of Sive at the Abbey Theatre earlier this year and I am not surprised that it enjoyed a sell-out run. I am delighted that the Abbey is going to be taking this production on tour and I am especially pleased that this tour will include Belfast. This is the start of a new North/South touring initiative agreed by myself and Minister Ní Chuilín, and I would like to commend the Abbey Theatre and the two Arts Councils for bringing it to fruition.” Sive was seen by over 30,000 people on the Abbey stage earlier this year. gerry anderson – indian August brought local music and radio fans the sad news of the passing of Gerry Anderson at the age of 69 following an illness that kept him off the air for almost two years. Since he first took to the airwaves in his hometown of Derry on BBC Radio Foyle thirty years ago his unique style, wit and musical taste soon led to his show being aired across the north on BBC Radio Ulster. Listeners from all backgrounds and tastes would tune in daily for Gerry’s unscripted anarchy set against the ‘straight man’ role of his side-kick, Sean Coyle.
An accomplished musician in his own right, Gerry cut his teeth in the Irish Showband scene before travelling to the USA and Canada, where he played bass for Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks – previous members of which going on to become The Band. His background as a musician gave him an understanding of life as a developing artist, making his interviews with local musicians relaxed, funny and engaging. He will always be missed.
‘noBody’ Does It Better Ever since catching teenage singer-songwriter Bridie Monds-Watson aka SOAK on Stephen McCauley’s Electric Mainline show on BBC Radio Foyle in January of 2012, ‘Total Music’ has been awe-struck by this most unique and intriguing of talents. Fast forward to September 2014 and it’s evident that the rest of the country and indeed the UK have joined the fanclub. Now 18 years old, with appearances at Glasgowbury, Electric Picnic and this summer’s Glastonbury already on her CV, along with three fantastic EPs, each improving on the previous release, SOAK has more than lived up to her initial promise. After releasing her hugely successful ‘Blud’ EP on Chvrches’ Goodbye Records label, she signed to
Rough Trade – the iconic home of influential bands like The Smiths, Super Furry Animals, Arcade Fire, The Strokes and the Buzzcocks to name but a few. Her first release on Rough Trade is a single called ‘B a noBody’ and it’s now available digitally, with a 7-inch vinyl release due on November 3. As expected it’s a thing of beauty and quite possibly her best release yet. To promote the single she is going on a ‘Nobody Tour’, which will take in London, Manchester, Dublin and her hometown of Derry on November 7, where she’ll play in Christ Church. The Derry gig is certain to be a sell-out, so if tickets are still available snatch them up immediately as they won’t be there for much longer. The rise and rise of ‘SOAK’ continues
Rainy Boy Gets No Sleep
Pretty Fly For Some White Guys Strabane three-piece White Male Actors are set to release their debut EP on Monday, October 20 on Broken Melody Records. It comes hot on the heels of a spellbinding live performance by the band in the Alley Theatre, where they raised the roof of the auditorium alongside fellow Strabanimals Those Ghosts, Tokyo Empire and Freak’s. It was an evening of exceptional quality and frankly there’s not enough space on this page to do justice to the joy of seeing local musicians playing their own music, which just happens to be of a quality that can stand up against any band anywhere. There will be no patronising ‘up and coming talent’ platitudes in this column because these bands have nothing to learn. They’re the real deal and as live units they can own any stage they walk on. The rest is up to you! Anyway, back to White Male Actors. The debut EP will be called ‘Ghosts’ and its leading track will be ‘Mysteries And Histories’, as voted by a select group of fans via social media. Here at ‘Total Music’ we had the pleasure of a sneak pre-
view of the EP as well and it’s a cracking anthemic wall of sound, packed with strong guitar riffs and big choruses that will stay with you long after you listen. These songs will travel far and wide, no doubt about it. White Male Actors’ music has already travelled as far as Athens, Georgia, USA. Drummer Mark Donnelly sent a copy of their debut single ‘31 Years’ to the R.E.M. offices in Athens on Record Store Day, April 2013. The song was written in tribute to the Athens rock legends, who called it a day after 31 years together in 2011. Former R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry replied that ’31 Years’ was “by far the greatest tribute to the band that he had heard” and manager Bertis Downs added that it was “simply wonderful”. Formed in late 2012 by Mark Donnelly (drums) with David Mc Gaughey (vocals and guitars) and Pete Devine (guitars) the trio
Rainy Boy Sleep to promote new release
Lifford singer-songwriter Rainy Boy Sleep is preparing to promote his debut release for Universal Music Ireland with a nine-date tour, which takes in Letterkenny and Derry in October. The long-waited three-track ‘Ambulance’ EP was released in August to wide-acclaim. It has indeed been a long time coming for Rainy Boy aka Stevie Martin, who has been touring consistently over the past four years, taking in many of the major festivals along the way and supporting the likes of Ray Davis, Cyndi Lauper and James Morrison.
quickly made a name for themselves by the quality of the material that they were posting online. They followed this positive reaction with series of powerful live performances. The band signed with Irish independent label ‘Broken Melody Records’ in December 2013 and recently headlined a show at the prestigious Sound City festival in Liverpool, where their performance captivated a packed house
and brought forth a stream of high praising reviews. The ‘Ghosts’ EP is arriving at a time when the band are definitely flying high and they don’t plan on slowing things down. They are currently making plans to work with famed British producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Ryan Adams, Kings Of Leon, Robert Plant) in the coming months on some brand new tracks. To keep up with White Male Actors, check out their Facebook page: www.facebook/whitemaleac-
To say he took his time with his debut release would be an understatement but it was certainly worth the wait. All three tracks are of a quality we’ve come to expect from the Lifford man. The title-track also features the angelic harmonies of Manchester’s Fred Longworth School Choir. Check out the video also. You can catch Rainy Boy Sleep locally as he performs in Mason’s, Derry on October 24 and the Green Room, Letterkenny on October 25. Always the engaging presence onstage these are shows not to be missed. For more information, check out www.facebook.com/rainyboysleepmusic.

Work has finally begun on footbridge with a completion date of March 2015
Local Councillor and bridge campaigner’s delight as work gets under way With preparation work now under way at Melvin for the pedestrian bridge set to link the Ballycolman and Fountain Street/Springhill areas of the town, the people of Strabane are beginning to envisage the project becoming a reality, according to local Independent Councillor, Paul Gallagher. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ on site at Melvin, where the work was taking place, Mr Gallagher, who has been at the forefront of campaigning for the bridge for almost a decade, expressed his delight at seeing the lorries and diggers beginning what he hopes will conclude in a pedestrian bridge to benefit both sides of the river come March 2015. “It has been a long time coming. We’ve had many ups and downs in the process of trying to get the bridge in place. I’m sure many can recall as far back as the seventies and the school projects that focused on designing a bridge for the town. For years it just remained a school project but now the reality of it is now upon us,” he said. In 2005, under the Neighbourhood Renewal Project, a Planning For Real event was held and one of the key findings was the idea of a footbridge connecting the ‘Head of the Town’ area to Ballycolman. It went into a planning stage with Seed money in the region of £10,000 going to Strabane 2000, who then did a feasibility study on the plan. This was followed by a more in depth study that included a design costing £92,000. From there the project seemed to stall.
Grant
We can now see the preparation work get under way. The bridge, as we speak, is now getting the designs made-up, so hopefully the completion date of March 2015 will be met “I campaigned for a number of years that the design of the bridge was too rich. The width of the bridge was 22 ft. Now it’s almost half that. My campaign centred on making the design fit the needs of the people. The most important aspect of this footbridge has always been giving people access to all these services. Getting from A to B was more important than having a big iconic looking footbridge. Eventually, Council came round to that way of thinking and redesigned the bridge. The new design went out to tender and we now have contractors in place, the tender fits, the amount of money fits the design and now it’s about to happen,” he enthused.
“It was all to do with the political climate of the time. Money was available and then money wasn’t available. Council took the lead on the project and got a grant of £650,000. It was based on pedestrian access and cycle routes on both sides of the river. However, that grant was conditional and time bound and unfortunately that time passed and the money was withdrawn,” Mr Gallagher explained.
Mr Gallagher believes that while there may be some disruptions around the site of the bridge, meeting the deadline date is important. “We can now see the preparation work get under way. The bridge, as we speak, is now getting the designs made-up, so hopefully the completion date of March 2015 will be met. Obviously people are experiencing minor disruptions now that the preparation The Independent Councillor previously iden- work is under way. But I think people are very tified that the original bridge design was too content to see that this work is actually happening. Now is the time to get this work done, ambitious.
Councillor Paul Gallagher at the site of the new footbridge where preparation work is underway.
before winter sets in and it will help the March deadline to be met. Also, with the establishing of the ‘Super Council’ it may cause a delay if the completion deadline is not met.The last thing people want to see is work happening now and then a stumbling block coming along,” he warned. With work now under way, Mr Gallagher is confident that there will be less public cynicism to the prospect of the project coming to fruition.“I’ve had numerous conversions with people who have said, ‘that footbridge will never happen!’. It’s the same on social media sites as well. However, I’m hopeful that it is now becoming a reality for those people,” he said. When the project is completed, residents from the ‘Head of the Town’ area will have greater access to facilities and services on the Ballycolman side of the river. Mr Gallagher stressed, however, that it won’t be a case of
one-way traffic. “Look at the surroundings of where we are standing now at Melvin. You’ve got Strabane Golf Club, Strabane Sigersons, training pitches, allotments, an outdoor gym, a running track, soccer pitches and the new Melvin Sports Complex development. All of these things are on the Ballycolman side of the river with no access as such from the ‘Head of the Town’ despite it being a stone’s throw away. There are very few facilities in the ‘Head of the Town’ so the footbridge will act as a conduit to get people into the services available all along the Ballycolman side of the river. It’s important to stress, though, that it’s not one-way traffic. There are a lot of children on the Ballycolman side who attend St Anne’s Primary School. There are people who attend Strabane Parish, people who visit the cemetery and people who attend the Health Centre on Upper Main Street, so there will be access both ways to services on either side of the river.” he said.

Blood, Bullets and Broads The Emmy-winning HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire” has returned for its eight-episode, fifth and final season on Sky Atlantic.
Steve Buscemi plays ‘Nucky’ Thompson, mob leader of Atlantic City in the Prohibition era of 1930s America.
From Terence Winter, Emmy-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, “Boardwalk Empire” is set in the Prohibition era and chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City, portrayed brilliantly by the ever-consistent Steve Buscemi. The first four seasons took place during the 1920s. At the end of season four, Nucky was eager to throw in the towel, his brother Eli had been exiled to Chicago, and his business associate Chalky White retreated to Maryland to mourn his daughter and pick up the pieces of his business that had been left in tatters, thanks in large part to Jeffrey Wright’s criminally good performance as Dr. and menace that surpasses even De Niro in the Valentin Narcisse. same role. Such characters have been quite central to the series so it should be interesting to see how it will fare without the latter two. blood stains on her clothes was fascinating to watch. For season two, the story picks up three months after Bea (Danielle Cormack) killed ‘Top Dog’ Jacs Holt. Lizzie Birdsworth (Celia Ireland), Doreen Anderson (Shareena Clanton) and Sue ‘Boomer’ Jenkins (Katrina Milosevic) are still serving time, and while Bea has been languishing in the slot, Franky Doyle (Nicole da Silva) has risen to the position of ‘Top Dog’ unopposed.
new series debuted last year and the first episode became the most watched non-sports program ever on Australian subscription television. It has become an international success, first in New Zealand and then in the UK and Ireland and has now been sold to more than 20 territories. It is now safe to say that this reimagining of an Australian institution (pardon the pun) was a bold step and could’ve easily flopped. However, the first series proved to have great scope, strong characterisation and a number of intriguing plot lines. Particularly impressive was the development of the Bea Smith character. Her transformation from the nervous, mild, softly spoken hairdresser to unrepentant killer with
The sudden arrival of new Governor Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) is about to change all that. Ferguson’s mandate is to clean up Wentworth and restore order at any cost to the inmates and her staff - Deputy Governor Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson) and Corrections Officers Matthew ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Aaron Jeffery) and Will Jackson (Robbie Magasiva). Viewers of the original series will recognise many of the names. That said, this series stands on its own and those sets seem pretty damn solid. A third series has already been commissioned so we’ll be serving time with the ladies for some time yet. “Wentworth Prison” can be seen on Channel 5 on Wednesdays at 10pm.

‘I believe that every game is winnable’ - Jim McGuinness
DONEGAL PEOPLE ARE DREAMING OF THE DOUBLE
People all over Donegal have been dreaming of an All-Ireland double as we get closer to this Sunday’s final after Jim McGuinness, Declan Bonner and their senior and minor teams completed a unique double over the Dubs in Croke Park. “It’s a dream final in many respects for Donegal and it’s particularly a dream final when the minors are there as well,” said McGuinness. Despite the fact that the defending senior champions Dublin started the semi-final as 2/9 favourites, they were completely outfoxed and outfought by a Donegal side who were rated as 7/1 outsiders by some. That was a reflection of Dublin’s dominance in their four previous games this summer and McGuinness couldn’t find fault with the oddsmakers. But he said: “I believe that every game is winnable if you get everything right and you’ve got the right attitude. “Every single county in Ireland has 15 good footballers and if they’re all fully, fully focused and they’ve got the heart and determination to play for their county and there’s a good game plan there, you’re not going to be far away. “We were hoping going into the semi-final game that the honesty would be in the group, that we would deliver a game plan and we still didn’t know if we were good enough to win the match or not because of the challenge that was presented to us. “Had we lost in the semi-final by a point, I could have easily made peace with that
because that’s what you want — you just want them to give it everything and deliver that performance. They did that.” An enthralling contest hinged on a 10-minute period at the end of the first half. Diarmuid Connolly could have put Dublin seven points ahead but his shot came back off the legs of goalkeeper Paul Durcan. From that point to the end of the first Jim McGuinness is proud that the senior and minor teams are in the final this Sunday and would half Donegal outscored the Dubs by 1-4 love nothing more than to make it a double and bring Sam back to Donegal once again. to 0-2, topped by McHugh’s first goal, and took a two-point lead into the break. M.MURPHY TO SCORE A GOAL & DONEGAL WIN 70MINS
Just as inspirational, McGuinness said, was the thrilling semi-final between Kerry and Mayo which the team watched together from their hotel in Kildare. “You talk about honesty and we referenced both teams today, the honesty that they showed was exceptional. “It looked like an All-Ireland final win for Kerry after the game and it was a bit like that for us.” The celebrations which greeted the final whistle were euphoric to say the least but McGuinness was quick to put the result in its proper context. “It rates absolutely nowhere because we have got to prepare for the All-Ireland final and if we get beat in that it will be crushing. I know that Kerry are thinking the same. That’s sport… The final now shapes up as a tale of two counties who were written off before the first ball of the Championship was even kicked, but McGuinness said it’s no surprise to see Kerry back in another final. “We talked about game intelligence and Kerry probably lead the way in terms of game intelligence over the last how many decades. “I played down there myself for two years with the college. They have really good decision-makers. Most of the players are two-footed. They play a lovely brand of football. “They are going to bring all that experience and craft to the game the next day.”

The GAA has confirmed the referees and match officials for Sunday’s 2014 GAA Football All-Ireland Senior and Minor Championship finals with Eddie Kinsella from Courtwood, Co. Who got the Donegal tickets? final ticket. The after-match banquet for both the senior and minor teams will be held at the City West Hotel in Saggart. Tickets for the full banquet will be available at €80 with the after banquet tickets priced at €20. A total of 2,000 tickets will be available for the full banquet with a further 1,000 allocated for the after event.
You could never have enough but Donegal fans will have to make do with the 16,088 tickets for Sunday’s All-Ireland football finals when the county seniors and minors face Kerry in both the minor and senior finals. And even though there are two county teams in the finals the county has received just 1,373 more tickets than in 2012 for the senior final against Mayo. Tickets have been distributed to the clubs but as expected some are not satisfied with their share. The County Board said they weren’t happy either Clubs were allocated 1.2 tickets per adult member. 13,518 tickets have been allocated to the clubs-84 per cent of the total. “We are all disappointed in the allocation we have received,” said County Chairman Sean Dunnion. At last Monday night’s meeting of the Donegal County Committee in Ballybofety, Naomh Ultan (Dunkineely) delegate, Terence McGinley, said that the allocation from Croke Park ‘shows very little respect to people who want to support the minors’. Central Council delegate Niall Erskine said the allocation was the same as that given to Kerry and in line with the number given to competing counties in the hurling finals. “We have made numerous enquiries and we are told that there will most certainly not be a second allocation,” warned the county secretary, Aodh Mairtín Ó Fearraigh. “The only hope is if other counties return their allocation and I doubt if that is likely.”

Donegal only got 1,373 more tickets than the 2012 final even though the seniors and minors are in the fnal at Croke Park this Sunday.
The remaining 2,506 tickets will be divided among various strands of the association in Donegal: 1,141 to players, management, support teams, county board and referees; 512 between the main sponsors; 294 to elected representatives, former county players residing outside the county, media; and 64 to be given to members of the 1992 All-Ireland winning panel. Tickets will also be given to the members of the 2012 All-Ireland winning panel no longer on the county squad.
Contingency tickets The county secretary added: “It is very much in line with 2012, but we are under severe pressure with our contingency tickets. We have over 400 in 2012, but now we only have 200.” 6,033 of Donegal’s tickets are for Hill 16, while 107 have ‘restricted views’ in the Upper Davin and are priced at €40. All-Ireland SFC Semi-Final - Did that just happen?
Dubs dumped as Donegal delight It was a shock to everyone; well everyone in 31 other counties, as Donegal dismissed pre-match favourites Dublin with their comprehensive 3-14 to 0-17 win over the outgoing champions in the All-Ireland football semi-final. It looked dodgy for a spell early in the game however as Dublin looked in control and led 0-7 to 0-2 but whether it was over confidence or just too much pressure from the Donegal defence, they missed two great goal chances while Ryan McHugh’s goal helped Donegal lead 1-8 to 0-10 at half-time. A second McHugh goal straight after the restart further stunned the Dubs. Colm McFadden’s three-pointer helped Donegal lead by eight points as there was to be no road back for the holders. The Dubs went into the game watched by over 81,000 spectators as 10/1 on favourites but after producing an impressive opening quarter, the ‘team that couldn’t be beaten’ wilted as their composure deserted them. But while there will be major inquests in the capital about what went wrong for Jim Gavin’s side, those discussions shouldn’t overlook a quite remarkable display by the rejuvenated 2012 All-Ireland champions. The Tir Chonaill sidle were back to the marauding form of two years ago as their massed defence forced turnovers which led to lightning breaks into Dublin territory. The teams made late changes to the line-ups with Cormac Costello and Jack McCaffrey replacing Kevin McMenamin and Nicky Devereux for Dublin and David Walsh and Rory Kavanagh in for Patrick McBrearty and Christy Toye. Jim Gavin’s changes certainly didn’t work for Dublin although McMenamin and Devereux made little impact when they were introduced in the second half. Walsh was quickly called ashore after 25 minutes and Toye’s introduction helped Donegal fight back after Dublin’s early scoring blitz while McBrearty’s impact role in the second half was again a boon for Jim McGuinness’s side. Dublin seemed to have uncovered the key to unlocking Donegal’s massed rearguard as spearheaded by Paul Flynn; they racked up a 0-7 to 0-2 lead by the 19th minute thanks to some glorious long-range shooting. But crucially, the Dubs had wasted their first goal chance as the struggling Eoghan O’Gara, shackled throughout by Neil McGee, failed to find the unmarked Bernard Brogan. Dublin’s second big miss came when they led 0-8 to 0-4 as Diarmuid Connolly’s low point-blank shot was saved by Paul Durcan when the roof of the net should have been bulging. The Dubs still looked in control as a Connolly score did increase their lead to five but the remainder of the half belonged to the Ulster champions

as they outscored the opposition 1-5 to 0-1 in an astonishing 10-minute period. Toye started the Donegal scoring sequence and after points by Odhran Mac Niallais and Michael Murphy, the Ulster champions suddenly were in the lead when McHugh poked to the net after an unselfish lay-off from Colm McFadden following a high ball aimed in at Murphy. While Donegal led 1-8 to 0-10 at the break, Dublin fans were surely expecting normal service to resume in the second period, such was the prematch talk of the gulf in class between the teams. As it turned out the home supporters were in for a rude awakening as Donegal ripped up the Dublin defence on numerous occasions in the second period. Anthony Thompson’s run set up McHugh to score his second goal three minutes after the restart as Dublin were caught short in defence. McFadden bore down on the Dublin’s goal again two minutes later but was content to fist over another point.
in the final 10 minutes but their shooting was wildly off target as Michael Darragh MaCauley, Connolly and McMenamin all blazed wide. This was yet another tactical master class from Jim McGuinness had won the day as Donegal fans celebrated into the wee small hours.

It must be said however the match was close to being put to bed with a full 23 minutes of normal time left as McFadden was able to walk the ball into the net after great work by Mac Niallais with the Dublin defence again hopelessly outnumbered. Dublin did cut the lead to five points by the 57th minute after points from sub Paddy Andrews and Connolly but not even the black carding of Eamonn McGee for a body-check on Jonny Cooper was going to rattle Donegal as McBrearty responded with two glorious points from distance. And to add weight to the push the GAA’s Ulster Council chairman Martin McAviney has called on Gaels in the nine counties to get behind Donegal’s bid to win the All-Ireland title for the second time in three years. Conscious that ‘Sam’ has already been brought here on five occasions since 2002, McAviney believes that another triumph would cement the belief that football in the province has seldom been in a healthier state. “While I respect the fact that people like to follow the fortunes of their own county teams,

there is no doubt that Donegal have proved that they are worthy standard-bearers of Ulster and as such they deserve the wholehearted support of everyone,” said McAviney. “The manner in which they beat Dublin in the semi-final showed that they are an exceptional team and the build-up to the final is proving electric. “I would like to see people putting aside any differences they might have in a GAA context and instead give Donegal every support they can.” As the Donegal team and their manager Jim McGuinness work on the big match preparations for the final, McAviney makes the point that a double success for the county is in the offing. “It’s not often that an Ulster county is repre-
sented in both the minor and senior All-Ireland finals, but Donegal are there very much on merit this year and the prospect of a double triumph is very real,” he said. With Kerry forming the opposition in both finals, the Croke Park showpiece will take on an added aura. “Kerry are the kingpins of the All-Ireland scene as we know and they will come into the final armed with a great tradition,” said the Ulster chairman. But he also sent a warning shot across the bow of all other counties who didn’t think the Tir Chonaill men had it in them to make history: “Donegal have shown that they are very resilient, skilful and committed and they will certainly not be found wanting.”

After Donegal’s hammering of All-Ireland Champions Dublin confirmed a Donegal-Kerry final, there was speculation that the counties would wear alternative kits due to the perceived similarities in their traditional county colours. The last time this had occurred on All-Ireland Final day was 2010 when Cork and Down came to a similar arrangement to what occurred when they played in a semi-final of the 1994 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. 2010 represented the first occasion since Kerry and Offaly played in the 1982 final that both teams playing in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final donned alternative strips, while the 1996 final was the last time one team, Meath, wore an alternative strip when they lined out against Mayo. In the event it was announced that Donegal and Kerry would wear their traditional jersies. Whether this detracts from the spectacle remains to be seen but one thing’s for sure, the green and gold will be hard to miss!
Good to Donegal this Sunday!

they will keep tabs on. It gives us a while to prepare for and a while to study for it.” When asked about the benefit of the five intensive days of preparation in Johnstown House, McGee answered: “There’s been a lot made about the five days, but we could prepare like that for every game, the Dubs are no exception.
Donegal have world leaders too in their team and while they might only be concentrating on 70 plus minutes of football next Sunday, it’s no less important to them!
The Lough Erne venue has no football fields available to Donegal, but they were able to host their training sessions through the use of local club facilities.
Preparations for the All-Ireland football final have involved another lengthy training camp and a five night stay in neighbouring Fermanagh, along a reported party of almost 50 is expected to cost in the region of €20,000

Donegal All-Ireland Special on Irish TV Irish TV, Ireland’s first international TV channel, will broadcast a special two-hour ‘live’ All Ireland special from the Abbey Hotel in Donegal town tonight Friday, September 19 between 8pm and 10pm. The Mad for Sam live TV show will air on Sky channel 191, Freesat 400, all free-to-air boxes, Eircom’s eVision 191 and online at www. irishtv.ie. The live show will include insightful interviews from the Donegal camp, expert analysis from top GAA pundits and all the excitement and atmosphere in the build up to the big game. Irish TV will also be giving away tickets to the All Ireland football final on the night through a phone-in and text-in competition,
so make sure to tune in if you would like to be in Croke Park for this historic meeting of Donegal and Kerry. The show will also include some great live music from Donegal performers, while the pundits look at the key battles on the pitch and the strengths and weaknesses of both panels. An interview with Donegal manager Jim McGuinness will feature on the show and former manager Brian McEniff will be on the couch to discuss the match.
He admits he thrives in that environment, having been part of the International Rules travelling squad. “It is enjoyable,” the Gweedore man said. “To experience that, you are more or less living with the team, getting proper recovery after the training and eating the right foods. It’s just nice. You nail it perfectly. “If you have to find any quality at all, you will find it in those few days. When you have a bit of extra work to do, that’s when you can do it, or if you need a wee break, it’s ideal.”

The same pairing will also meet in the minor final, where more history will be made as it’s the first time Donegal have reached the U-18 final. It’s the first time since 1979 (Kerry v Dublin) that the minor and senior finals featured the same pairings. Kerry seniors are back in the final for the first time since 2011 while Donegal were last there in 2012, when they won the title for the second time.Kerry and Donegal have met only once previously in the championship, with the Ulster men winning the 2012 All-Ireland quarter-final by 1-12 to 1-10. Donegal dethroned defending champions, Dublin in a 3-14 to 0-17 win in the semi-final while Kerry earned their place in the final with a 3-16 to 3-13 win over Mayo in a replay, which went to extratime at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. This is how the championship season panned out in all four provinces.

Franke Gallagher’s game has excelled this season and he and his partner have had some fantastic results to date very long hitter from the tee.
Andrew Connolly partners Frankie Gallagher, one of the younger members of the team who seems to be daunted by very little and excels under pressure.
Damian McGranaghan, club bar Steward and is another with great experience, one of the clubs longest hitters who makes a great partner for his much younger counterpart.
Shay Callaghan, 17yrs the youngest member of the team, he has had a fantastic golfing season, came in for the Ulster Semi-finals and has handled the pressure at his ease.
Brian Haughey has played in the opening four matches and as 11th man he will make a great replacement if called upon.

The “Other’ Football in America Following the USA’s exploits in Brazil this summer at the World Cup and given the gradual rise of their MLS league, the ‘Herald’ asked Strabane man, Paul Gallagher, currently living and coaching soccer in North Carolina, how a nation famously indifferent to ‘the beautiful game’ has now seemingly embraced it.
“If God had wanted man to play soccer, were involved in a World Cup (cue the violins). For an Irish soccer fan at the time, it was probably he wouldn’t have given us arms.” A quote I heard a few years ago from an American Football coach, Mike Ditka. This is a sentiment shared by many Americans and for the most part, they just don’t get soccer. They haven’t woken up on a Saturday morning excited about what the feast of football before them. They haven’t played with their mates in their local car park, with a battered leather ball and spray painted goal posts. But times here are changing. In the 6 years I have spent in the U.S, I have watched soccer go from strength to strength.
The American people who embraced ‘soccer’ during World Cup 2014 in Brazil.
The two main reasons for this surge in popularity, are the emergence of the U.S.A national team and the rising list of soccer stars who have brought their talents to the MLS otherwise known as Major League Soccer. I’m sure everyone remembers the 2002 World Cup. If you don’t, it was the last time the Republic of Ireland
one of the best soccer experiences you have ever had. Everyone was kitted out in green, faces painted, hair dyed and for a few weeks in June, nobody cared about anything else. That is exactly how it was here this summer. People left work early, put on their red, white and blue and cheered for their nation. And just in case you didn’t already know, the American people are probably the most patriotic people in the world. It doesn’t matter if it’s a doughnut eating competition, they will get behind their fellow country man or woman as if it were their own family gobbling down the fried pieces of dough. So with the U.S team playing, and playing well, it resulted in more and more Americans hopping on the bandwagon and they cheered their hearts out until the final whistle blew in their 2nd round loss to Belgium. Not a bad showing for the country’s 5th most popular sport. But it was more about what was going on off the field during this time rather than on it. The amount of people dawning the American jersey or any soccer related clothing was startling. People really started to get into soccer and some of them even learned the offside rule!
Cheering throw ins! Yes there were a few in my local bar who were cheering when they won throw-ins but at least the passion and effort was there. Not only can this soccer rise be seen on the International stage, but on homesoil the MLS has continued to grow. This past summer it was released that New York would

be getting a new franchise (another word for team or club) and none other than Frank Lampard would be joining them in 2015. It was also announced that in my favorite city, Orlando, the local team Orlando City SC would be moving from the USL Pro (The American version of the Championship) to the
MLS in 2015 also. Their marquee signing? None other than the Brazilian maestro, Kaka. With big caliber players such as Lampard and Kaka deciding to play soccer in the States and the continuing rise of the U.S National team, the only way is up for soccer in America.
