School work could suffer with poor eyesight

Take care of your child’s eyes

SALE

Often at this time of year children complain of problems with their vision or headaches. It is important to get there eyes tested as soon as possible as if they need glasses their school work could suffer without.

However it is not always easy to detect problems with your child’s vision because changes occur gradually without your child noticing. Research shows that at least 1 in 10 children in the UK have a vision problem that can affect their education. It must be remembered that 85 % of what we learn is by sight so if this is not up to standard then education will be affected. A simple eye test (which is FREE on the NHS for children U16) can pick up and deal with these problems. “A full eye test by an optometrist is more comprehensive than the vision screening checks done by a health visitor or school nurse. More importantly an eye test is painless. says Donal McGovern optometrist. “And with appointment available after school, Thursday evening and Saturday morning there is plenty of opportunities to get an eye test. ( & !+ * !,+,,++"' " '++,,+ + ,,(* &,+ A child’s eyes are fully developed by the age of eight so any problems such as squints or lazy eyes need to be treated early. Strabane Unplugged Returns with the Happy Enchiladas The monthly Strabane Unplugged acoustic session returns on Monday, September 5 at the Pool Bar and the popular night is returning in style with a special full length performance by Derry’s Paddy Nash and the Happy Enchiladas and Dublin songwriter, Steven Cooper.

Derry’s Paddy Nash

Regular listeners to Gerry Anderson on Radio Ulster and even Janice Long on Radio Two have been regularly singing along to a number of songs by Paddy Nash lately. “Uncle Gerry”, as Paddy affectionately refers to him as, has been giving the moving ‘Cushialitee’, where Paddy recalls his father’s old tea mug, love for Jimmy Cagney films and his own memories of “heading down to Fiorentini’s for fish and chips and cups of icecream”, well deserved regular air-time, while Ms Long has now taken to the healthy marriage of ’50s Drive-In Pop and Socialism that is ‘Billy Bragg Jeans’. The latter has even reached the ear of ‘the Bard of Barking’ Billy Bragg himself, and he duly invited Paddy to appear alongside him at this year’s Glastonbury festival. Paddy will also be Bragg’s special guest when he tours Ireland in October. Last year, Paddy Nash and The Happy Enchiladas released an album called ‘When We Were Brave’. Since then Paddy has been promoting the record and has already appeared at Unplugged as a solo performer. He has always promised to return with the Happy Enchiladas band and, true to his word, the band descends upon Strabane Unplugged on September 5.

even secured a record deal. Their most famous track, ‘Happy’, was written by Paddy and used to promote Harp lager in an advertising campaign in the United States Later, The Happy Enchiladas were born and the band initially began recording in Paddy’s house, but after a few demos and a series of gigs the idea of an album became very appealing. Paddy booked the band into the Blast Furnace in Derry and he co-produced the album with Rory Donaghy. The making of the album reflected the strong community spirit that exists between the musicians of Derry. Loads of local musicians came in to help the band out: people who are great artists in their own right, like Junior Johnson, who played Hammond organ on the album, Phillip Wallace from Here Comes The Landed Gentry, who played drums, and also musicians like Conor O’Kane, Stephen Carlin, Robert Peoples and Connor Kelly. The album garnered five star reviews and it has taken Paddy across Ireland and the UK, with more dates to follow throughout the rest of 2011. Monday, September 5 promises to be a very speIn the past, Paddy was a guitarist and backing cial way to kick off the new season of Strabane vocalist with Derry band The Whole Tribe Sings Unplugged. Q&A Session with Strabane Athletic’s John Donaghey always possessed enough talented players who have travelled to other towns and villages to play at a higher level. Now the local football fraternity have got together and formed SAFC in the hope that in the not to distant future local players will be able to stay and represent their home town club in the Irish League. The people of Strabane 10. What goals in SAFC’s short history would enjoy their football and SAFC aim to restore footyou consider to be the best (wouldn’t look out balling pride in the community. What is it like to play and have the extra them they notched up 31 goals including 8 responsibility of being club captain for your hat-tricks. John McLaughlin scored a fantastic newly founded hometown club? Obviously it’s brace against Derrychara. Even Sane Stew- a nice honor to be captain but the real enjoyart hit a wonderful goal from 30 yards against ment is training and playing alongside friends Orchard Farm. But we have a good squad this year with a good blend of youth and experience so I see no reason why we can’t build on our success from last year.

1. Who is your favorite football team? Manchester United 2. Who is your favorite current/past player? Messi is the best I’ve ever seen and it’s a privilege to watch him play. Cantona is my favourite past player as he was influential in Manchester United becoming the most dominant team in England. 3. What is your fondest footballing memory to date? Man Utd beating Bayern Munich to secure the glorious treble in 1999. 4. What is the greatest goal you’ve ever seen live or on TV? My favourite goal of all time is Diego Maradonna’s hand of God against England 1986…..his second goal in that game wasn’t bad either. 5. Who (honestly) is the best player and manager you have played/worked with? The one player who stands out for pure ability, strength, power, pace is Brendy McLaughlin. He possessed all the attributes to be a top player except perhaps temperament! As for managers Marty Doc has the Mourhino factor. Along with his assistants Gary McGettigan and Decky McColgan they have impressed in the short time I’ve worked with them. But for me Danny “Bomber” Rouse was the best. He handed out the hair dryer treatment on occasion but you always wanted to give your best when playing for his team.

self after a heavy weekend on the booze so he usually puts in great effort during training. But he is getting old and a few of the younger lads like me are catching up. 8. What is your favorite position on the football field? My regular position for a number of years now is centre defence but I have played centre midfield in the past. I probably enjoy centre midfield more because you can become more involved in the attacking side of the game. But we have better players than me (so I’ve been told – but don’t know who they are) for that role so I’m just happy to play anywhere.

6. Who is the joker of SAFC? Ha, there are quite a few jokers in the team especially on a Saturday during games……but I suppose the manger would have to take that accolade. His old jokes and stories are always the best 9. Do you feel SAFC can mount a serious challenge on all fronts this season - F&W, NW ones…..in his words! Sat Morn, Mulhern & Irish Junior cups? Most 7. Who is the best trainer at SAFC? The definitely and I’ll be disappointed if we don’t win OLDER brother Gerard! He likes to punish him- any silverware. The NW Sat morn league has a

15. In your own personal opinion who do you think was the best ever player to grace a football pitch from Strabane? Strabane have produced so many great players over the years that I’m surprised they have never won the European cup, after all Celtic won it in 1967 with a Glasgow district side. Obviously I can only speak of players I’ve seen so I would have to say Gregory Kearney. I remember watching him play a few games many years ago. He was a fantastic talent but sadly passed away at a young age. 16.Personally, what do you anticipate to be your/clubs biggest challenge this season? Off the field I’m sure the committee is continually aiming to improve the infrastructure of the club and hopefully can put a viable plan in place so that we can someday have our very own ground and facilities. On the field we have had a good turnout for pre-season so there is a lot of competition for places. We have two teams going forward this season so hopefully everyone can 13. You have previously played at a higher play enough games and remain committed to level of football, why return to play for SAFC the club. Personally, I just hope I can get a at junior level? Over the years Strabane has game and play well. 11. Who do you think are the toughest opponents that SAFC have came across to date (in competition)? Maguiresbridge proved to be the toughest team. They are hard working, well drilled and have a few decent players who can cause problems. We were unprepared for the opening game of the season and they beat us convincingly. We will get the chance to put that right this season though as they were promoted as runners up. 12. Who is the toughest opponent (player/club) you played against in your career? To be honest I’ve never come up against a player or a club who I did not relish playing against. I’ve played against the likes of Derry City and Linfield, and though they were and still are great teams I can’t single out anyone for special praise. Nobody really gave me a lesson in those games….even though we conceded about 8 goals!

Slimming World

A top slimming expert has welcomed a new report into the serious health risks of obsessive calorie counting which she says “highlights the dangers of modern faddy diets”. Sinead, Slimming World Consultant for the SionMills group, which helps people to lose weight through healthy eating, group support and increased activity, was speaking after a report by the Future Foundation think-tank revealed that millions of people are at risk of conditions like heart disease and cancer because their obsessive diets are causing them to miss out on essential vitamins and minerals. Sinead, who lost 4 Stone herself with Slimming World, says she hopes that the report will increase awareness of the risks of quick fix diets that rely on starvation or cutting out nutrient-rich foods or even whole food groups. Sinead, says: “With more celebrity endorsements, more diet articles in magazines and more people using the internet to find ways to lose weight, it’s no surprise that there’s been an increase in the number of people trying faddy diets as a quick fix way to lose weight. “Traditionally thinking has always been that to lose weight you need to count calories. But this skews our way of thinking of food and often leads to an unhealthy diet because we count the calorie value of food rather than its nutritional value. That’s why at Slimming World we encourage slimmers to eat unlimited amounts of foods that are low in energy density and fill you up. Members choose from a huge list of Free Foods, including fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, pota-

toes, pulses, lean meat and fish, without ever having to count, weigh or measure. There’s no need to take drastic steps like living on tiny portions or liquid foods, or cutting out certain foods or food groups to lose weight. “The slimmers in my group know you don’t ever need to feel hungry or deprived in order to lose weight. Our Food Optimising eating plan is in line with all healthy eating recommendations as it encourages people to eat food from all the major food groups – with a third of their intake fruit or vegetables – so that they get all the vitamins and minerals they need for a healthy body and successful weight loss. “With the support of likeminded slimmers in group members shares ideas, experiences and motivation on a weekly basis, building confidence and self esteem, developing coping strategies and staying on track with weekly weigh-ins until gradually behaviours like becoming more active as well as healthy eating become the habit of a lifetime.” To find out more about Sinead’s Slimming World group contact her on 07835 439 707 or go online www.slimmingworld.com for all details of your local group.

nowhere near the same buzz as road racing. The closest I’ve had to adrenaline is probably receiving an ITV1 appearance on X Factor in Glasgow, and also Britain’s Got Talent in Newcastle upon Tyne. Meeting Simon Cowell, Ant & Dec, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Holly Willoughby. That was a great experience, getting from 15,000 applications down to the final 40 to the T V series. Entertaining people is my passion and I love the feeling I get when I’m on stage”. For more information on this event or to book your tickets please contact our box office on 02871 384444 or why not book on-line through our website www.alley-theatre.com.

The talent within the club produces stunning work from a wide variety of subjects – landscape, portrait, monochrome, close-up, still life and more. As a local club, it gives the Alley great pride to see the clubs best work exhibited. Their previous exhibitions have been amongst the most visited at The Alley, as family and friends (along with the general public) enjoy seeing local talent exhibited. Come along and support this local group and see their amazing work for yourselves. Their work is stunning and has to be seen to be appreciated. THE PATSY CLINE STORY & JERRY SADOWITZ HIGHLIGHTS AN ENTERTAINING FEW WEEKS AT THE BALOR The Balor Reps follow up last July’s sell out success with the return of THE PATSY CLINE STORY. The cast will feature many of the people involved in the wildly successful Stand By Your Man – The Tammy Wynette Story so big things are expected here. It’ll run for three nights from Monday, Sept 26th to Wednesday Sep 28th- the very stuff of country music songs and legends. If you’re a lover of quality drama we have some fantastic acts coming up- with the darkly hilarious, quirky, seductive ‘The Six Sided Man’ on Sat, Sept 17th and break out the leg warmers, acid washed jeans and Ray-ban sunglasses because the ‘80s are coming back! The Butt Drama Circle will present ‘I Love The ‘80’s’ an evening full of song and dance on Tues, Aug 23rd to Sat, Aug 27th. Sticking with the past theme the Balor will host Sonic Hippie Love Funk - 20th Anniversary Alternative Disco on Sat 20th Aug @ 10pm. There’s unrivalled comedy on Fri, Sept 9th with Jerry Sadowitz who has been spewing vitriol at all and sundry in what is surely the most impressive alternative comedy career these isles have seen. So, loads of great stuff definitely going ahead in the coming weeks. Tickets for all shows are on sale now from the Balor Box-office on - ROI: 00353 749131840 for more info log onto www. balorartscentre.com Read on for a little sneak peek of the treats in store for you over the coming weeks...

Sonic Hippie Love Funk Alternative Disco Many years ago, 20 to be exact, a group of music fans got extremely fed up with the disco and chart music of the night club scene of the day and decided to start up their own alternative disco playing the kind of music they wanted to hear and the phenomenon that became Sonic Hippie Love Funk was born. Organisers of Sonic Hippie Love Funk are dusting off the old vinyl’s from wherever they’ve been stored and getting it together for a 20th anniversary reunion bash which will take place at The Balor on Saturday August 20th. The seats in the auditorium will be retracted so it’ll be like having an alternative disco in the old Butt Hall. It’s only €6 in if booked in advance or €8 in if paying on the night. So save yourself €2 and the organisers (even more) grey hairs by getting your ticket early. Tickets are available at The Balor on 0749131840.

I Love The 80’s Get ready to go on a journey... Back to the future... A journey back in time to when Michael Jackson and Rick Astley were the Kings of Pop... A journey back in time to when bubble skirts, big hair and blue eye shadow were cool... A journey back in time to when the Atari was cutting edge technology...

A journey back in time to when the A-Team and Different Strokes ruled the world... That’s right dudes... you are about to go on a journey... Set in graduation year, “I LOVE THE 80’s” follows a group of American senior year students in their final year at high school, as they experience the fun, the heartbreak, the loves and the loneliness of growing up... This musical comedy covers every base, paying tribute to the countless teen movies of the time - And with a kicking retro 80’s soundtrack right out of a mixed tape, you’ll be dancing and singing along in the aisles. Presented by the Butt Drama Circle, and featuring a mixed (mainly youth) cast of over 40, this production once again provides a terrific showcase for the vast array of talent we have in the Finn Valley area. Admission €12 for adults, €10 for children – Group rates are available. Show starts at 8 pm nightly.

The Six Sided Man Sat Sep 17th

A tongue-in-cheek comedy inspired by cult novel the Dice Man will be coming to the Balor, in the form of the Six Sided Man. Audiences at The Balor Arts Centre this autumn will be gambling on a great evening out courtesy of one-night-only comedy The Six Sided Man. Performed by Gavin Robertson and Nicholas Collett on Sat 17th Sept 2011, the tongue-in-cheek and darkly comic play is said to be inspired by Luke Rhinehart’s The Dice Man, very appealing to fans of the cult novel. Theatre-goers will be able to discover the consequences of a psychiatrist who decides to make every decision by following options given to him by a dice. But, organisers say, ‘as he delves further into giving up responsibility for his actions, and introduces a patient to the same idea, mayhem ensues and rules become twisted.’ Promising a thoroughly entertaining two-man show, the play is said to suitable for anyone aged 14+ who appreciates a compulsively watchable play.

Bonner, Damien Doherty, John McGranaghan and Off The Cuffs John Dolan faithfully reproducing many of Patsy’s most famous hits including I Fall To Pieces, Walkin’ After Midnight and, of course, Crazy. The Patsy Cline Story runs at The Balor on Mon Sep 26th to Wed Sep 28th. At 8.30pm nightly. Tickets are €15 and available from The Balor Box Office on 0749131840.

Sadowitz. Face down the fear and miss him at your peril’ (The Scotsman). ‘The most spectacularly original comedian, he’s absolutely brilliant, stunning and he has the most genuinely radical mind in comedy’ (The Metro). Sadowitz holds forth on such people-friendly topics as terrorism, cloning and child abuse. Not for the easily offended. Suitable for 18+ (Adults only)

Jerry Sadowitz Comedian, Magician, Psychopath! Fri 9th September - 8.30pm If you like Hannibal Lecter, you’ll love Jerry Sadowitz! With his incorrigible smile and his propensity to hurl his underwear at female members of the audience, you’ll be so helpless with looking for the police you’ll forget how much you paid to get in! Jerry is also one of the greatest card magicians in the world, but with the planet in such a mess, who gives a ****?? Just PayPal the money before one of us dies. ‘There is nothing as strange and funny as Jerry

The Patsy Cline Story

Mon Sep 26th – Wed Sep 28th After the sell out success of last Julys show & unprecedented demand, Balor Reps bring back the frankly excellent PATSY CLINE STORY to the Balor Arts Centre on Mon Sep 26th to Wed Sep 28th. It tells the story of legendary country music star Patsy Cline from the time of her discovery by local Virginian DJ Jolting’ Jim McCoy at age 14, through two marriages, a car crash, a nervous breakdown right up until her untimely death in a plane crash aged just 30. More than most this is a local production with a cast and crew of almost 20 featuring well known local actors such as Catie Bradley (Patsy), Kieran Griffith (her husband Charlie) and Jack Quinn who plays legendary country music producer Owen Bradley. The script is also locally produced written by Balor Theatre manager Conor Malone. In addition to depicting the life story of one of music’s most remarkable women the show also contains magnificent music with a 5 piece band of local musicians including Seamus Curran, Dennis

Kim says to try and use an oil at the bottom of your hair like Biosilk as a split end mender will help it grow. Condition your hair while lying in the sun or swimming . For a high volume look, Kim has her hair professionally curled for photo shoots to add fullness and a sexy look. She uses volumizers and thickening spray in her hair and blows it dry.

Red Carpet radiance

Her makeup artists use a number of tricks to give her that fabulous flawlessly makeup look. Under eyes use concealer. Olive skin can make for dark under eye circles so use a cream concealer such as Laura Mercier’s secret camouflage followed with a liquid concealer on top such as liquid high definition concealer from Smashbox cosmetics. Try a highlighter to give a sheer golden glow to the skin on your face or body. To keep makeup in place try a primer

before applying it and apply pressed powder to the skin after the foundation to set. If you have oily skin stick to oil free makeup and powder for a matte flawless look.

Successes at CRAFT Training...

che Desmond Ro

s Ryan People

I have just finished my first year at CRAFT Training and will now progress to a Level 1 Diploma in Plastering. I was unsure about what I wanted to do in CRAFT at first, but I was able to skill sample and found that I enjoyed Plastering most and had a good range of basic skills. While in CRAFT I gained the skills needed to compete in the Plastering section of the Northern Ireland Skillbuild competition. I also welcomed the help given to me in my Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and Careers classes. I am looking forward to a new year at CRAFT Training and would recommend a course at CRAFT to anyone.

My name is Ryan Peoples and I have been with CRAFT Training for 3 years. I am currently working on a Level 2 NVQ in Bricklaying. I am currently placed with Justin Craig Construction. During my course I have gained many Bricklaying skills as well as passing my CSCS Health & Safety test and all my Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. CRAFT have helped me so much with my qualification, work place and in making some great friends.

I am studying Hair & Beauty at CRAFT Training in Strabane which I would recommend to anyone! I love the fact that we get both practical and theory classes which allows you to learn how something should be done and also to practice doing it. Our training salon has all the equipment we need and our free Hair and Beauty kit was a great help. I also got a local work placement in a salon and I get lots of experience there on the days I am not in class.

My name is Natalie Mc Elhinney and I have just completed a Level 2 NVQ in ICT. My placement was within CRAFT working with lots of different types of ICT equipment in an office environment. I achieved Essential Skills Level 2 Numeracy, Literacy and ICT. I also took part in various personal development courses and trips through CRAFT such as Lifeskills and the G.R.I.T project. I am now beginning a Level 3 ICT course and hope to go to university.

s Andrew Luca

Lee Scobie

My name is Andrew Lucas and I have been studying Painting and Decorating at CRAFT Training for 2 years now. I am currently an Apprentice and this allows me to get lots of work placement experience and attend class for theory and Essential Skills as required. I am always able to contact the staff at CRAFT if I have any queries and my employer is always kept up to date with my course progress and what is required. I have competed in the Northern Ireland Skillbuild competition and have received a lot of encouragement and support from my tutors. CRAFT has shown me that getting qualified and becoming employed is possible.

I have been a Joinery student at CRAFT for the past 4 years. I have just finished my Level 3 in Joinery and have secured a full time job in the work placement CRAFT found for me. I have also got a Level 2 in Numeracy, Literacy and IT skills. I have been a competitor in the Northern Ireland Skillbuild competition representing CRAFT and have been given great training and advice from their staff. I would describe CRAFT as a local, friendly centre that offers great qualifications.

Exercise Trail launched at Melvin Sports Complex Strabane District Council in partnership with the Public Health Agency and Sigersons GAA Club officially launched an outdoor Exercise Trail/Green Gym at Melvin Sports Complex.

This unique project is one of the first trails across Northern Ireland and includes 17 exercise stations. The equipment is suitable for use by teenagers through to seniors and from beginners to advanced athletes. Additionally a number of pieces of children’s exercise equipment have been included. For many people participating in physical activity can be quite daunting. The Exercise Trail creates a gateway to a healthier lifestyle for people of all ages in a relaxed setting. It is free, convenient and accessible to all. Research shows that even a small amount of regular exercise can have measurable benefits towards physical and mental health, and well being and the Exercise Trail will be a great way to start. A recent health needs assessment completed in this area found that more than twice the amount of people in the Strabane Neighbourhood Renewal area, (most of Strabane town), said they ‘never’ participate in physical activity. A greater percentage of people from outside the area completed one hour of physical activity each week (total of 76.3%) than those from the N.R. area (64.2%). The development of this exercise trail therefore provides an additional and accessible opportunity for people living in this area to participate in physical activity right on their doorstep. Speaking at the launch of the trail, Chairman of Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian McMahon said: “It gives me great pleasure to officially launch the Exercise Trail project. This unique project creates a gateway to a healthier lifestyle

welcome addition to the community allotments nearby; together they change the local environment for the benefit of everyone, particularly the most vulnerable, supporting and promoting good health for all.” Chairman of Strabane Sigersons, Mr Aiden McGrath said: “This project is a welcome addition to the entire redevelopment of recreational facilities. There are huge opportunities from Melvin Sports Complex right through to the Sigerson’s facilities. I warmly welcome this development in an area that suffers from high rates of deprivation. Thanks to everyone who made the venture possible most especially the Public Health Agency and Strabane District Council. We hope to build upon this very successful partnership in the future.”

for our local people. It is free, convenient and accessible to all and removes many of the barriers that might otherwise prevent people from taking those first steps. The trail provides an exciting alternative for local people to engage in physical activity. Research shows that even small amounts of regular exercise have measurable benefits towards physical and mental health and well being. This project therefore provides a tangible resource for local people to engage in physical activity and adds value to the whole healthy living environment and brands Melvin as the health and well being hub of the Neighbourhood Renewal area and Strabane district, and promotes Melvin as a model of good practice in

promoting physical activity and tackling obesity.” Speaking at the launch, Dr Eddie Rooney, Chief Executive, PHA said: “the Public Health Agency was established to improve health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities. It is vital that we continue to work in partnership to improve the factors that influence good health and wellbeing. This outdoor gym builds on our work with the local community and Strabane District Council and will contribute to the health and fitness of the town, tackling obesity and promoting physical activity. As a focus for exercise, social interaction and fun, this new gym will allow everyone to feel part of the community, promoting social inclusion and wellbeing. It is a

Don’t miss Strabane Cage Soccer!

Strabane Community Safety Partnership, in conjunction with the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Strabane District Policing Partnership and Strabane District Council will be delivering a project which uses an innovative way to engage with young people in the community. Cage Soccer provides an outlet for young people who are interested in sport and socialising and encourages team work and a sense of community pride. Councillor Patsy Kelly, Chairperson of Strabane Community Safety Partnership said:

“We are always exploring new, creative ways of providing the young people of Strabane with positive activities that they can become involved in. Cage Soccer is an evolution of Midnight Street Soccer and allows young people to compete in teams of two players for prizes. As cage soccer expands in other areas of Northern Ireland local teams may have the opportunity to compete in regional tournaments” PSNI Area Commander Chief Inspector Andy Lemon said: “The most common complaint we get from young people is that they have nothing to do, especially over the long summer holidays. This can often mean they hang about on the street and, while they may not be doing anything wrong, their presence

can sometimes be unnerving for some residents. “While this is by no means the solution to anti-community behaviour, it will provide our young people with a constructive outlet. As a Police service we believe it is important to support local initiatives like this that allow for positive engagement within the community.” Strabane DPP chairperson Councillor Thomas Kerrigan said: “Cage Soccer is a new and exciting concept, which is being introduced in Strabane for the first time this summer. It aims to provide an alternative past-time for young people, giving them the opportunity to hang out with their friends in a positive way.” A programme of events is planned for the month of August. The cage is mobile and

can therefore be set up within communities and will be a free service to the community throughout the year. The cage will be transported, erected and staffed by Strabane District Council. Active community coaches will also be on site to provide free coaching. For more information contact Ryan Tracey, Community Safety Officer, Strabane District Council on 02871 382204.

Caged Soccer planned events: Aug 26th – Newtownstewart (Playing Fields) 6pm to 9pm

Aug 27th – Castlederg (Mitchell Park) 6pm to 9pm

Staying at The Lake Hotel is like experiencing history. Electric Dreams The Irish summer festival season wraps up, as ever, with the Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Laois on Friday, September 2 to Sunday, September 4. The three-day annual arts-andmusic festival is now in its eighth year and it continues to be the most eclectic festival in Ireland, celebrating a rich variety of music from the present to the distant past and everything in between.

Regarded by some as “the thinking music fan’s festival”, the Electric Picnic certainly attracts an older audience compared to many of the other festivals in Ireland. However, that is not to say it is in any way a nursing home for those who can recall a time when Michael Stipe had longhair, Nick Cave had his own hair and PJ Harvey liked to flaunt her under-arm hair! The best of the present and a Warpaint , James Blake, James Vincent McMorhealthy sprinkling of the past would be an accurate row, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Unthanks, John Grant, description of proceedings. Gemma Hayes, The Japanese Popstars, The Lost Brothers and Funeral Suits. As headliners, this will be Arcade Fire’s first appearance at the festival since their legendary afternoon show in the Electric Arena tent in 2005. Since then the band has released two hugely successful albums and are most certainly in the midst of their purple patch. No Electric Arena tent for them this year however, instead it will be the high drama of the main stage. Also not to be missed will be PJ Harvey, who this year released arguably her finest album yet, ‘Let England Shake’. Ska and Reggae heroes Jimmy Cliff and Toots and the Maytals will deliver glorious sun-stroked sets regardless of Confirmed to play are Arcade Fire, Pulp, The Chemical Brothers, Interpol, PJ Harvey, Beirut, Blonde Redhead, Zola Jesus, The Drums, Santigold, The Family Stone, Joan As Policewoman, Best Coast, 3epkano, Power Of Dreams, Yuck, Alexandra Stan, The Undertones, Public Enemy, Jimmy Cliff, DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus, The Charlatans, Mogwai, Sinéad O’Connor, White Lies, OMD, Toots & the Maytals, Lykke Li, Midlake, Death in Vegas, The Go! sive sonic soundscapes, as their most recent album, ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, You Will’, proves, and they will be another ‘must see’ act. Santa Fe’s Beirut will be another highlight. Since 2006 the band, headed by Zach Condon, has released three albums, mainly exploring and combining Eastern European and Balkan folk with Western pop music. Reviewers and fellow musicians have noted that, unlike their previous albums which drew heavily on those foreign influences, their latest album, ‘The Rip Tide’ has shown Beirut with its own, more pop-oriented sound, where “what emerges is a style that belongs uniquely and distinctly to Beirut, one that has actually been there all along.” It’s possibly simpler than that. Maybe

they may just want to sell more records! They’re a fantastic band well worth checking out. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are a band made for festivals. Led by Ima Robot vocalist Alex Ebert and touring the world in a big white bus with silver trim, this group of Americans are living proof that Charles Manson didn’t kill off the hippy dream completely. Expect a run through their delightful 2009 album ‘Up From Below’, including, of course, the anthemic ‘Home’ – potentially a festival highlight! Local representation at the festival comes from Derry’s electro-kings, the Japanese Popstars. It will be the highlight of what has been a remarkable few years for Decky Hedrock, Gary Curran and Gareth Donoghue. They were nominated for “Best House DJs” at the 2006 World Urban Music Awards, “Best Live Performance” at the 2007 Northern Ireland Music Awards and won “Best Live Act” at the 2008 Irish Music Awards. They were also awarded “No.1 Dance Album” by Hotpress magazine, and won “Best Live Act” and “Best Album” at the 2009 Irish Music Awards. Their most recent album, ‘Controlling Your Allegiance’, features collaborations with Robert Smith of The Cure, Tom Smith of The Editors, Jon Spencer, Green Velvet, Lisa Hannigan and James Vincent McMorrow, proof that the Popstars are making all the right friends! Another Derry band is playing at the festival too, and they’re called The Undertones. They might even have more than a few toe-tappers in their set! Other veteran acts performing alongside John Peel’s Derry darlings include Big Audio Dynamite, featuring Mick Jones from The Clash and film-maker and DJ extraordinaire Don Letts, eighties synth-popsters OMD, post-punk goths Killing Joke and Hip-Hop innovators Public Enemy. To say that there’s something for everyone is a terrible cliché. There’s everything for everyone!

Amy Winehouse 1983-2011

Much has been written about Amy Winehouse over the past few years and since her tragic death last month the music journo’s pen has been smoking. Sadly her death at the age of 27 was all too inevitable following a life chased by a camera lens and addiction. Before even delving into what the music world has lost, it would be respectful to point to the fact that first and foremost a family has lost a daughter and a sister. It is not the job of this piece, or indeed any article, to ponder on the mindset of Amy Winehouse. Many will now crassly and lucratively opine on the various aspects of her life but in truth only Amy Winehouse can give an accurate account on that front and that’s not going to happen now. All we, the public, have is the artist, the singer, and a fine singer she was! Unfortunately her death at the age of 27 allows too many overly verbose writers to perpetuate the tedious rock ‘n’ roll mythology of, as Kurt Cobain’s mother Wendy O’Connor coined it, ‘that stupid club’, which Kurt himself became a member of following his suicide in 1994. The reality is this: Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and, now, Amy Winehouse, did not die because they were 27, they died because of drug abuse! Arguably the musical merits of some of those individuals have been even excessively elevated after their death. Jim Morrison was, indeed, a great front man. But lets face it, he was the lyrical equivalent of ‘Gabby Johnston’ in Mel Brooks’ classic movie ‘Blazing Saddles’, spouting sixth form “frontier gibberish”. That very ‘lizard king’ mythology that Morrison carried threatened to overshadow what was essentially a great rock ‘n’ roll band. It’s a myth still being sold today 40 years after his death. Today, commentators are now saying that the gamut of emotions that coloured the life of Amy Winehouse are all too vivid in her singing, just as they were with Billie Holiday. Just four years ago many of those same commentators believed that although Winehouse could sing a tune, she borrowed too heavily from many of the styles of the greats. Others argued that her voice lacked a personal signature. After her death, such opinions are difficult to come across from many of those same commentators. Such opinions will not sell books, commission television documentaries and probably the movie, so that may have something to do with it. Revisionism and sycophancy is now the call of the day, as Amy Winehouse becomes a lucrative posthumous industry like that of Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson. Paint a vulgar picture indeed! Simply ignore the cheap and rushed onslaught of books that will be on the shelves and the crass Sunday paper revelations from the tedious and slimy pack of leeches. Simply listen to the music. It’s the one thing they’ll never take from her.

Safety improvements to Ligford and Spout Road-Sinn Féin Steps being taken to improve safety on some of Strabane’s busiest roads have been welcomed by a local councillor. The Roads Service announced plans to introduce traffic and pedestrian warning signage and road markings on the Ligford Road and Spout Road. It follows representations Councillor Jay McCauley made about safety concerns on stretches of both roads. The Sinn Fein man said: “In terms of the Ligford Road, there is a tight bend close to the entrance

of President Wilson’s ancestral home and the danger of this stretch has been clearly illustrated with at least to vehicles going off the road here recently.” Cllr McCauley revealed that he recently received confirmation from the Traffic Management Section that Roads Service will erect “double bend ahead” warning signage and provide “SLOW” markings on the carriageway on both approaches to the bends adjacent to the entrance to the ancestral estate. He added: “In terms of the Spout Road, I raised concerns about the safety of pedestrians who use

the road and particularly about pedestrian safety on the stretch out of town side of the Drumrallagh Estate where there are a dangerous series of bends.” He continued: “Roads Service will now be erecting “double bend ahead” warning signage, ‘Pedestrian’ warning signage and provide ‘SLOW’ markings on the carriageway on both approaches to the winding section of carriageway beyond the Strabane speed limit.” Roads Service plan to have these elements of work on both roads completed within the next 8 Steps to improve the safety on both the Spout and weeks. Ligford Roads are being introduced soon.
