Eurovision Here We Come! Strabane singer Ryan Dolan stands every chance of joining victorious Irish names such as Dana, Johnny Logan, Linda Martin, Niamh Kavanagh, Charlie McGettigan and Paul Harrington as he will now represent Ireland in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. He won ‘EuroSong 2013’ on ‘The Late, Late Show’ on Friday night with the song ‘Only Love Survives’ composed by himself and produced by Wez Devine.

LUCKY 15 ONE WINNER
‘The Late, Late Show’ host Ryan Tubridy presented five songs that were in contention for ‘EuroSong 2013’, and a combination of five regional juries and televoting determined which song would represent Ireland in the First Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Tuesday, May 14. ‘Only Love Survives’ was victorious with a score of 112, with its nearest rival being ‘Crashing Down’, composed by Robert Grace and sung by Aimée Fitzpatrick .
5xTIMES THE ODDS!
Ryan’s Mentor, Stuart O’Connor commented, “As soon as I discovered I was going to be a mentor I was determined that given the opportunity I would send an Irish singer/songwriter to Malmö this year. I was delighted to receive a large volume of songs from all around the world but as soon as I heard ‘Only Love Survives’ I knew this was it - it ticked all the boxes. I immediately set about gathering a full Irish team including backing vocals by Leanne Moore and percussion by Nicky Bailey founder of Extreme Rhythm who has performed with ‘Riverdance’ and most recently on ‘X Factor’ with Kelly Clarkson. The result is a modern song with an Irish vibe that will appeal to audiStrabane singer Ryan Dolan who will be representing Ireland at the ences across Europe.”

Gearing up for the new Fishing Season on the North West The beginning of the new fishing season is upon us and anglers have been eagerly anticipating its arrival. Fishermen all around the North West and further afield are gearing up to get the New Fishing Year started. The Finn and Foyle are opening for fishing on the 1st March. Catch and release is in place in all waters of the Finn and Foyle. The taking of fish is still permitted on the River Mourne, however that does not open until the 1st of April. We look forward to that. A consultation on the number of fish that any angler is permitted to retain on the other rivers of the Foyle system is currently being decided upon. There will probably be no decision made on this for the next few months.

Strabane Drama Festival – 15th – 23rd March Join us in March when Strabane Drama Festival brings us nine spell bounding nights of brilliant drama from Friday 15th March – Saturday 23rd March. Always a firm favourite in the Alley Theatre Spring Programme this years event will give audiences an even wider feast of plays ranging in genre brought to you by drama groups from all over Ireland. ‘Dancing in Lughnasa’ by Brian Friel.. play unfolds from the point of view of adult narrator Michael, then 8 years old, the illegitimate son of the youngest sister. His memories of that fateful time, centred round the festival of the Celtic god Lugh, bring into sharp focus images of love, loss, and moments of intense emotion in a play of layered meanings, conflicting rituals and family tensions.
A scene from Rasper Players’ ‘Carthaginians’.
The festival opens with Rasper Players presenting ‘Carthaginians’, written by world-renowned Irish playwright Frank McGuinness. The play is set in a cemetery in Derry, where three women (and later four men) gather to wait for a miracle—that their dead loved ones will rise. The characters in Carthaginians are all survivors of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre. Using mordant and black humour, as well as densely poetic language and mythical echoes of the ancient city of Carthage, this is a multi-layered, powerful and moving piece that focuses on forgiveness and redemption.
On St Patrick’s Day we have a brilliant comedy in store as Coolera Dramatic Society presents ‘The Butterfly of Killybegs’. Written by Brian Foster this is a hilarious adult comedy not to be missed. Mary watches her life ebb away as she looks after her conniving bedridden mother. Grasping a final chance of love and freedom, she befriends the shy middle-aged bachelor Patsy Duggan and readily accepts his proposal of marriage. Patsy, however, has a secret and when it is uncovered, Mary must prevent her mother from telling the local gossip.
Saturday 16th we welcome Garrymore with the modern classic ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ by Brian Friel. Set in 1936 in Ballybeg Co. Donegal, the home of the five unmarried Mundy sisters and their brother Jack, a priest recently returned from Hilarious comedy ‘The Butterfly of Killybegs’. 25 years in an African leper colony, this memory
On Monday 18th March St Dympna’s Cramatic Society present ‘When We Were Married’ by JB Priestly. In the heart of Northern England, three respectable couples, married on the same day, at the same church, and by the same vicar, join to celebrate 25 years of blissful matrimony. Or so they think…The happy celebrations are brought to a sudden halt by a shocking revelation these pillars of the community aren’t quite as respectably married as they thought they were. As the home truths fly like confetti and conjugal rites turn to farcical fights, an evening of sparkling comic mayhem erupts.

The Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan, has unveiled plans for the modernisation of Melvin Sports Complex, with work due to commence within the next two months. In what will be a major boost from the local and wider community, the plans form part of an ambitious leisure redevelopment programme which has been initiated by Strabane District Council. Articulated in the Council’s Corporate Strategy 2012-2015, the plans will also see the modernisation, upgrade and redevelopment of Derg Valley Leisure Centre and Riversdale Leisure Centre. “This investment, in the region of two million pounds, will further enhance the leisure offering at Melvin” explained the Chairman. “It will create a new four court sports hall, revitalise underused space, improve the overall look and feel of the centre and further encourage civic pride in the area. This investment will enhance our ability to offer an increased range of activities - to suit all ages - and all levels of fitness - in attractive and up to date surroundings. Melvin has a strong user base and plays a key role in community life. However the building is now 35 years old and I am pleased that today we can unveil its planned transformation.” Melvin Sports Complex was built in 1975. It was named after a family from the area called John and Cassie Melvin. Over the years the complex has received several internal and external upgrades with the addition of the synthetic and grass pitch, a
multi use games area, athletics track and children’s play area and picnic area. During the redevelopment the centre will be closed in order to facilitate the construction process. Council is currently engaging with customers and user groups to minimise any disruption. However the pitches and the athletic track will still remain open. “Unfortunately there will be some form of disruption for user groups while this transformation takes place” said the Chairman. “The centre and the play park outside will be closed until early 2014. We would encourage local families to use the play facilities at Courtrai Park or the outdoor exercise trail at Ballycolman in the interim period. However I am pleased to report that the pitches and the Athletic track at Melvin will still remain open.” For further information on the Melvin redevelopment programme, please contact the Centre Manager Melvin Sports Complex on 028 7138 2660 or via Text Phone: 028 7138 1348.

Is There Life After The Boys Of Summer Have Gone? The big summer concert announcements are coming in thick and fast at present and what would anyone give for a lottery win right now! While it’s always a pleasure to see the good and the great descend upon this country, particularly when many can recall the darker days when it wasn’t always the case, to attend all the shows in question would see a premier league footballer tighten his purse strings from now till then! To attend The Who in Belfast, any one of Bruce Springsteen’s five Irish concerts, Bon Jovi at Slane and Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in Dublin, it will cost an individual £400 at least. Loving the oldies sure does hurt the pocket! There are some music media commentators who have suggested that the 30-plus £25.50 to see REM at Slane! Them days are gone! concert goer is now the target audience for the major concerts not just in Ireland but around the world simply because they are the ones who can afford the ticket prices and these are the bands in their record collections. Indeed, it can be a big ask of a younger music fan to cough up £80, even if they love the acts mentioned above but these are the times we’re in. Eighteen years ago R.E.M. played Slane Castle and the tickets were
£25.50. You’re now paying over three-times that to see any big band. Obviously, the musical landscape has changed considerably since 1995. Way back then, most people were still buying music and by that I mean a physical product – a CD. Download culture, both legal and illegal was not as prevalent as it is today and HMV and Virgin Megastore reigned supreme! Even back then I’m sure some people saw the musical climate of today coming. Like all things in life, when there’s doubt, stick to the safe bet and in musical terms the safe bets are “heritage acts” like Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen and The Who. However, all these acts are over 60 and can’t go on forever, so Too see Bon Jovi at Slane or some of the other summer headliners could cost you a small fortune this coming summer! one wonders what the musical landscape will many ways, this is the end-game for a gen- same price? Has Ireland Found Its (Euro)vision Again? By the time we go to press we will know if local singer, Ryan Dolan, with his single ‘Only Love Survives’, was successful or not in a bid to represent Ireland in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, held in Malmo, Sweden. Having heard all five potential tracks it appears that Ireland has finally woken up to what Eurovision is now all about and gone are the wholesome ballads that served us well in the 80s and 90s. For years, even long after these ballads had a Eurovision currency, Ireland continued to plough the same path while the Eurovision landscape and soundscape was changing dramatically.
Local singer Ryan Dolan.
That said, our very own Mickey Joe Harte gave a sound representation with the Euro-friendly and instantly accessible ‘We’ve got the World’ back in 2003. Despite that, there have been too many embarrassing failures in recent times, such as Donna and Joe, Brian Kennedy’s cringingly creepy ‘Every Song Is A Cry For Love’ (sorry Brian, some are a dart for the exit door!), Dervish’s preciously smug
‘They Can’t Stop The Spring’ and the “are we being ironic or do we just not care anymore?” confusion that surrounded the efforts of Dustin the Turkey. Who knows what damage that turkey did to Ireland’s previously infallible standing within the eyes of the Eurovision audiences and judges. Jedward, who represented Ireland twice in recent times, fit the modern day Eurovision like a glove and have a persona that appeals to the more hyperactive strand of the Euro-pop market. But even they barely posed a threat to the new European order. The five potential candidates hoping to represent Ireland this year could change that. They all have a sound that says they’re willing to play by Eurovision’s rules and that they have nothing but respect the institution. Whoever gets through this year, it is certain to be a legitimate apology to the Eurovision audience for all of the above and obviously, we hope that by the time of publication all roads will be leading to Malmo for Ryan Dolan. Sweden and Eurovision – why does that ring a bell? Does your mother know?
Baba O’Riley indeed!
Speaking of The Who, Pete Townshend has sent a message especially to Irish fans, saying that Ireland is “… one of the most important countries in the world to him…” He goes on to reminisce about The Who’s first shows in Ireland in the early days in Belfast, Cork – where Pete’s grandfather was born and Dublin but more recently the OXEGEN festival which “…was a really really great gig to do”. He concludes that he “can’t wait to get back… I love the people, love the history, love the music, love everything about it...” Yes folks, you guessed it – Tickets are still available for the Who’s two Irish dates and, as with all big bands, when this happens it’s time to shine that shillelagh.

Jody Gallagher leads the bill for the March Unplugged Strabane Unplugged returns to the Pool Bar on Monday, March 4th and topping the bill at the monthly session this time is Jody Gallagher. Hailing from Donegal, Jody was a late-bloomer when it came to songwriting, despite being a professional musician for 30 years. His career began as bassist in a band called Pluto, alongside his brother Paul. Jody moved around the instruments for a time before settling on keyboards and guitar. In the late 90s he decided to try his hand at songwriting. It proved to be a successful new venture winning him several song contests and leading to a number of artists covering his material, including Brendan Quinn, who recorded a version of Jody’s sublime ‘Day’s Gonna Come’. The next step for Jody was to write and record his own album. He went on to release ‘Mixed up World’, an album as rich lyrically as it is musically, with a sharp observational turn of phrase floating above a country and blues backdrop. Also on the bill on the night will be Strabane singer-songwriter, Glenn Rouse. No stranger to the local stage, Glenn has enjoyed stints in a number of bands, with his powerfully distinctive vocals making their stamp with a number of acts, including In Limbo and his legendary performances alongside Warner Mullen. Recently, Glenn has also guested with Zenemy DJz during a number of their roof-raising live events. Songwriting has always been at the core of Glenn’s musicality and on the night he will be showcasing

the new material he has been working on in recent months. It promises to be a show-stopper. Also on the bill that night will be 21 year old Derry-based guitarist Gary Lutton, making his debut appearance at the Pool Bar. Music kicks off at 10.30pm and admission on the night is £3. As always, there will also be a prize raffle. Come along and enjoy a wonderful evening of live music right in here on your own doorstep.

Sharon’s slimming success!
EDITORIAL
Sharon Baldwin lost 13st 7½lb and discovered a love of cooking healthy versions of her favourite takeaways. Read her story... “I’ve been overweight all my life but the reality hit home when I had to leave a new job after three days because I couldn’t physically walk up the stairs. Later that year I graduated with a foundation degree in Early Years but my weight overshadowed my success. Instead of feeling proud, I felt ashamed and embarrassed because I was so much bigger than everyone else on the stage. “The final straw came on a holiday of a lifetime to the Dominican Republic. As well as needing to ask for a seatbelt extension on the plane, I overheard people poking fun at my weight by the pool and I struggled to cope with the heat so I spent a lot of time alone in my hotel room. I vowed to lose weight on my return and take control of my life. “I’ve been a Slimming World member before so knew I’d be greeted without judgement and with the open arms of my Consultant. This time around I followed the Extra Easy plan and I enjoy making ‘fakeaway’ versions of my favourite takeaways like pizza, chicken chow mein and beef curry.” “Body Magic is now a big part of everyday life. At first I walked for 10 minutes a day and would get my husband to set a stopwatch to beep after 5 minutes then we’d walk home. Every day I’d challenge myself to beat my previous distance. Now I love exercise like jogging and Wii Fit and meet up with my Slimming World buddies to share ideas and recipes as we powerwalk around Sharon Baldwin after losing an incredible 13st 7.5lb and inset is how town. Sharon looked prior to her slimming success. “I’ve been a Slimming World member before
so knew I’d be greeted without judgement and with the open arms of my Consultant. This time around I followed the Extra Easy plan and I enjoy making ‘fakeaway’ versions of my favourite takeaways like pizza, chicken chow mein and beef curry.” “While I was studying for my BA in Childhood Studies I decided to kick my smoking habit. I got my healthy nibble ideas from my fellow slimmers in group and snacked on home-made quiche, vegetable crudités and fruit whenever I felt the urge to reach for a cigarette. I haven’t smoked since and I didn’t put on weight – in fact, I was 7 stones lighter when I graduated this time around! “As a target member I know I’ll keep going to my wonderful Slimming World group to inspire others and continue to be inspired too. My family and friends are so proud of my weight loss and, best of all, I’m incredibly proud of the happy and healthy person I’ve become.” ‘It’s really changed my life! If you’re unhappy with your weight,I would honestly say to go join your Slimming World group.Loose weight and feel great this Summer, all with no hunger...ever.’
It will help to add an extra incentive to our members’ commitment to reaching their dream weight. “I’m inviting anyone who’d like to lose weight and support our local community at the same time to come along to any of your local groups and join the Slim for Good challenge – where we’ll be losing lbs and gaining £’s at the same time. The campaign lasts six weeks and, by the time it ends you’ll be well on your way to a slimmer, happier and more confident you. “A little ray of sleet” Jeremy Hardy “… turns grumpiness into an art form” The Evening Standard “…top comedy gig” The Telegraph “... he delivers his jokes with a precision and passion that you can’t second guess” – The Times
After a six year absence from live comedy tours, Jack Dee toured the UK and Ireland to sell-out theatres last autumn to rave reviews. This spring he’s back on the road once again for another 30 dates including two nights at the Millennium Forum on Wed 27th & Thurs 28th March. Still the same Jack, agonizing over the slightest of annoyances and misdemeanours of everyday life. The host of the long running Radio 4 show I’m Sorry I haven’t A Clue said he was returning to the road ‘as he wanted to spend less time with his family’. So.... where’s he been? Appearing on shows like QI and Shooting Stars, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 out of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You. He’s been hosting Radio 4’s legendary I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, recently hosted Sky Atlantic’s new show Don’t Sit In The Front Row, co-writing and starring in four series of BBC 2’s hit sitcom Lead Balloon and writing his memoirs, Thanks For Nothing which he modestly dedicated to himself -“Without whom none of this would have been possible”.
A revised box set, including all his previous DVDs and best bits from the first two series of Jack Dee Live At The Apollo was released by Universal Pictures (UK) in November 2012 and available now from www.hmv.com.
A brand new Jack Dee Live DVD, the first in six years, will be recorded at the world famous Hammersmith Apollo on Saturday 11th May for release by Universal Pictures (UK) in November 2013.
Jack Dee performs at the Millennium Forum on Wed 27th & Thurs 28th March. Tickets are now available from the Box Office. Telephone 71 264455 or visit www.millenniumforum. co.uk for bookings.

New Gym proving a hit with locals The recent opening of Fit Fast Gym in Strabane has been a great success in it’s first month.
Vaidas Adomaitis, owner, said “It’s been fantastic to see the amount of support we’ve received, and I believe that this is because this gym offers the full package to our clients, making it unique to Strabane. Vaidas Adomaitis, a Lithuanian Native, came to Northern Ireland to start a better life for himself, and was given the opportunity of employment in Strabane, despite not speaking a word of English. However, a few years later, when the credit crunch hit, Vaidas saw himself out of work, and needing to make some big decisions. Vaidas saw this as a great opportunity to re-skill himself, and what better way than to pursue his life long passion of health and fitness. “Whilst working full time, I felt unable to pursue my love of fitness, so when I was out of work, this is when I decided to take action to make my dreams happen”. Vaidas obtained numerous qualifications including fitness instructor and personal trainer qualifications, even obtaining a 2:1 at The University of Limerick. In addition of this with his experience, and client base from his Fit Fast Personal Training and Fit Fast Bootcamp, Vaidas felt ready to take the leap towards opening a gym. His decision was made easy when it came to choosing a location, as he said “I felt Strabane is the only place where I would like to open a gym, this is a great town, with a lot to offer, as it once offered me the chance to change my life, and this has happened”. Fit Fast Gym is suitable for all client types, including those who are experienced gym users or those who have never set foot inside a gym, catering for all age groups. The gym offers a friendly, relaxed and clean space, and is well equipped with top brand commercial gym equipment including a cardio area, free weights area and core training area. Another unique point to Fit Fast Gym is its afford-
able prices from just £3 for a day pass, or £18 for a monthly membership. Fit Fast Gym also offers concession memberships for under 18’s and over 60’s, for just £15 per month. There are no tied in contracts, unlike many other gyms, and extras such as inductions are also free. Vaidas is also on hand to offer training tips or nutritional advice. Vaidas said “our current client list ranges from 11 years old to over 80, and we have a great mix of men and women users. I also offer Personal Training at the gym, so clients can be assured to know that I am qualified in my field, and I have a proven track record in helping my clients achieve their goals. Fit Fast Gym is located at Unit D, Ballycolman Industrial Estate, Strabane. Tel: 075 268 24066. Calling all Coaches The 2nd North West Coaching Forum will take place in Strabane this month with Sean Cavanagh providing the keynote address for this biannual event. A number of other excellent speakers will also be delivering workshop sessions on the night; with Sharon Madigan (nutrition), Paul Connolly (sports psychology) and Mike McGurn (strength and conditioning) all in attendance. The Forum is planned to support the education of sports coaches and raise the profile of coaching in the North West region. Michael Cooke Coaching& Club Development Consultant for the North West region was full of enthusiasm for the event. He said, “After the success of the first NW Coaching Forum in 2011, it was essential that we put together another strong event for this year. The Coaching Forum will be an excellent opportunity for sports coaches to gain knowledge and receive guidance from experts across a range of sports. I would encourage all coaches regardless of sport or discipline to attend the event, as I’m sure they will be able to take something away which will support their education and development.” Coaches and volunteers from all sports are invited to attend these educational sessions focusing on a number of key themes within coaching. The expert speakers will offer practical and knowledgeable learning for participants.
The forum has been created and supported by the North West Coaching Network which is made up of local authorities, sports partnerships and national governing body representatives from Derry, Donegal, Omagh, Sligo and Strabane. The partnership approach for the Network is coordinated by Coaching Ireland and Sport NI. Rate struck to fund second year of community investment programme Strabane District Council has agreed to increase its district rate for the coming year by 3.76% reflecting its ongoing commitment to invest in community, leisure and recycling facilities. This means that local ratepayers will see an average increase in their domestic rates bill of £22 in 2013/14, when the regional rate increase of 2.7% is taken into account. This is the second year of Council’s four year investment plan to develop a new waste transfer station and recycling centre in Strabane town and the refurbishment and upgrade of leisure facilities including Riversdale Leisure Centre, Derg Valley Leisure Centre and Melvin Park Sports Complex. Council Chairperson, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan explained: “Strabane District Council has given priority to developing modern leisure facilities and a recycling centre and depot that will support our ongoing effort to manage our district’s waste. Council is investing in modern infrastructure for the people of Strabane District and our programme will help sustain and create employment.” Referring to the progress on the Council’s capital development programme, the Chairman said: “Visible progress has been made over the past year in our capital programme. Council has purchased the site at Strahan’s Road for our new waste transfer station and recycling centre. Derg Valley Leisure Centre has been undergoing a £600,000 refurbishment which will see a new state of the art gym and leisure facility opening in spring 2013. Melvin Sports Complex is commencing the process of its £2 million transformation in the coming weeks. Riversdale Leisure Centre is also currently under review and we are working to develop a modernised facility within this term of our corporate plan”.
Projects such as the upgrade of Melvin Complex are included in the rates increase.
Strabane District Council, in addition to its existing community support programme, has also allocated funding within this budgeting process for a continuation of its sports capital grant aid programme. “This rate will also provide the local sporting community based throughout Strabane District with the opportunity to upgrade and develop their own facilities. This capital development fund compliments Council’s investment programme and is designed to support local community and voluntary activity” explained the Chairman. Interim Chief Executive, Daniel McSorley added: “I would commend the Council for its unwavering commitment to deliver the ambitious programme of investment set out in its corporate plan. This plan sets out Council’s vision to develop high quality, modern and effective services. Over the plan period, it is envisaged that this capital development programme will increase revenue generated through our leisure centres and reduce waste management costs.”

Meanwhile, Stephen is already planning ahead and eyeing up future projects. “I simply take every month as it comes. At the moment I’m reading through ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. It’s being done as a theatre piece in Regent’s Park and it’s one of those novels that you know is a must read but for whatever reason I’m only getting round to it now. I don’t think I’ll watch the film version until after the audition because I don’t want it to influence my performance. If the audition is successful it will be a superb experience,” he concludes. We wish him luck and here’s to the next twenty years!

work is the bread and butter since I started and I love it. I’ve been very lucky over the last few years working with Deborah because she does loads of theatre and opera. I did another opera with her recently – ‘La Traviata’ in Vienna – and that was a stunning experience also.” One wonders if the former St Colman’s pupil, who first took on drama classes at his old school, ever envisaged himself one day appearing in operas. “Opera was something that I never really thought about. It’s certainly not something I would’ve imagined back then. When I started doing Theatre Studies at school I didn’t

He is also known for his ongoing role as ‘Ian Craig’ in the BBC Radio Four series ‘The Archers’. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week from his home in Sion Mills, having just returned from Lyon, after appearing in a production of Handel’s ‘Messiah’, Stephen took time out to look back on his acting career so far and what lies ahead for him. Firstly, to his most recent project - Handel’s ‘Messiah’ in Lyon, has the Sion man found his singing voice? “It may be an opera but the audience was spared the threat of my singing, don’t worry about that,” he laughs. “I saw a production of it a few years ago with the same director onboard, Deborah Warner. I’ve worked with her a number of times and she asked if I would be in it this time around and I jumped at the chance because she’s amazing. “ Like many actors, stage-work is what has kept Stephen busy down through the years. “That’s the majority of what I do,” he tells us. “Stage
really have any confidence. I loved the class and I loved what it was about but bit by bit, job by job, you find that confidence and that continues right up to the present day,” he explains. After leaving school, Stephen attended the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin and would later secure a contract with the Abbey Theatre. From 1993 onwards his film, TV and stage CV has been growing and growing and while he jumps from one acting job to the next the one constant for him over the last seven years has been ‘The Archers’. “To be honest, the only thing I ever really knew about ‘The Archers’ was the theme music and that Billy Connolly once said during his standup that the theme should be the new national anthem. However, it has been an amazing experience and everyone involved in the show is pleasure to work with,” he admits. After these first twenty years, we wondered what production Stephen has been involved in that he is most proud of. He immediately mentions a recent film he starred in called ‘Private Peaceful’, set in the fields of Devon and the First World War battlefields of Flanders. “It was directed by Pat O’Connor, who also directed ‘Cal’, and written by Michael Morpurgo, who also wrote ‘War Horse’, so it was brilliant to be involved in it and Pat is a complete gentleman,” he enthuses. “The cast were amazing to work with as well. You have people in there like France De La Tour, who is an absolute legend, and Alexandra Roach, who I think is just going to sky-rocket now. She just appeared

The P.3 children, parents and their teachers gathered to the school Tuesday 29th January at 7pm. Mrs Anderson, the Literacy Coordinator spoke to all about the importance of reading at a young age and how this project can help children improve their reading skills. The children all entered into the ‘Paired Reading Project’ by signing a special contract. The children have promised to pick a reading book in school of their own choice every day and read it to their parents. The parents have also made a promise to make the time to listen to the stories and help them with any difficult words. This project will last for 6 weeks. Trainees from Craft Recruitment and Training Services took part in an innovative interview skills programme last week in the Alley Theatre. Led by BEAM Creative Network this project was part of an Arts and Business project between CRAFT Recruitment and the Alley Theatre. Over three days facilitators from BEAM Creative Network worked with 12 trainees in the Alley Theatre in the delivery of drama based workshops. The aim of these drama based workshops were to equip young people with core skills on interview techniques as well as developing self confidence, self awareness, team building and using drama to develop skills. Managing director from CRAFT Seamus Nealis said: As the leading training provider in Strabane we recruit trainees all year round onto various training courses such as IT, joinery, beauty, administration and painting and decorating to name but a few. Many of the students have never been for an interview before and were unaware of the key aspects employers are looking for. This drama based workshop gave the students the skills to be able to go into an interview full of confidence. On the final day of the workshops the students were able to take part in a mock panel interview, this went extremely well as the trainees were able to use the new communication skills they learnt and were able to sell their skills and personalities to the prospective employer. I know a lot of the students would find an interview less daunting now after taking part in this project. I would like to thank the facilitators from BEAM who worked brilliantly with the students by delivering a programme that fully engaged their imagination with the content of the programme.’ Kathryn O’Neill from BEAM commented ‘ BEAM Creative Network has worked with over 100,000 young people throughout Northern Ire-
land over the past 10 years, using drama and the arts as a medium to explore social and life issues. Theatre in Education has proven a powerful tool to improve and develop skills such as employability and personal development. Over three days young people from CRAFT Recruitment had a unique opportunity to boost their self –esteem in relation to interview skills in a fun, interactive and educational way.’ John Kerr manager of the Alley Theatre said ‘The students had a great time working with the facilitators from BEAM, learning new skills on interviews and what they entail. Not only did they learn new communication and body language skills, they also developed their vocal skills and methods of acquiring, interpreting and understanding information. On the day of the mock interview all the trainees gave a superb performance and used all the skills they learnt over the previous days. I would like to thank Declan Hughes from Strabane Chamber of Commerce for providing his time and expertise during the mock interviews. I congratulate all the trainees for taking and using this art based approach to learning and I am certain all these skills will certainly help them in their future careers. I would also like to thank Arts and Business for supporting this project. This project is the perfect example of how arts and business partnerships can work together.’

www.golffocus.net Focusing your effort on the course I have often thought over the years when I see great players winning tournaments how we focus a little bit too much on what they did that particular week.
We analyse their putting stats and their ‘up and downs’, fairways hit etc and we often say they were ‘in the zone’ or whatever clichéd phrase comes to mind. Yet, the win undoubtedly is a culmination of enough days doing the right things for the individual concerned. It is an accumulation of focused effort. If you put enough good days together, you will be rewarded by improved performance. The stunning results of the British cycling team over the past few years have been put down to Dave Brailsford’s now famous ‘Aggregation of Marginal Gains’. How enough small things done well add up to greatness. That said, though, we can either sit and moan about the weather or look at the coming months as a great opportunity to develop our game and put some work in which could result in a great year next year. I think the first thing to do though is to look back and review the year just gone in an honest and productive way. Look back for the patterns because I promise you, they will be there! Most golfers tell me they want to be consistent without realising they already are. It may be consistently bad but they will be consistent! Review the year and look at how you started your rounds of golf. Did you tend to start well then fade away or have poor starts with a comeback? What about certain
holes, certain shots? Did you tend to get anxious with a possible score to shoot? Did getting angry, upset or distracted cost you a lot of shots? Did you control the ball reasonably well but you just didn’t control the best club in the bag “you”. If you have to make some changes to your swing, then now is the time to do it. Don’t wait until next year just before the season starts and then hope you can suddenly improve your action. It takes time and effort but it will be worth it in the long run. If you are going to set out on a programme of improvement, then try to enlist someone else with you who can be your ‘range buddy’. The research on this is very strong in the sense that when we ‘share’ a goal with others and involve them, we are much more likely to stay on track. The research on visualisation and imagery also suggest to us we can enlist the power of our imagination to speed up the process of making changes in our golf game. It has long been established it is useful to visualise yourself making the moves in your swing that you want to change but I have also found it very useful to get players to visualise themselves behaving differently out on the course. If you are an angry golfer, spend some time in your imagination seeing and sensing yourself responding better to dropped shots and mistakes. If you get nervous, then spend some time in your mind’s eye seeing yourself dealing with what you perceive to be pressure situations. This is creating a behaviour template that your brain can go to work on.
In this state of indecision we find it impossible to make a positive, committed stroke with the putter - Shaun McGonigle

Fear and how to deal with it Over these past few weeks I have become acutely aware just how much fear affects our lives and the lives of the community around us. Far too often we are being bombarded with reasons to be afraid. Regularly, for example, we are told that ‘dire’ consequences await us if we get ‘too close’ to our European partners and others let us know that economic stability DEPENDS on a close relationship with Europe. It seems we have great difficulty in trusting those we hitherto trusted without question. We can believe the banks have let us down, the government has let us down and the church has betrayed our trust. The institutions that we used to fall bank on in times of crises are on rocky ground themselves. We can find it difficult to trust anyone and this can create fear within each and every one of us.
What is fear? We can look at fear as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, and perhaps likely to cause pain, or are a threat to our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or indeed financial well-being. Page 4 January 2012 The Herald
...write your own story!
Feeling afraid is a natural response however many of us have practiced feeling afraid so often we have become so good at it that it has become a habit. This habit then can paralyse us and we can be too afraid to take any action. In many cases such fear has been so exaggerated by our powerful imaginations that it has become False Evidence Appearing Real (FEAR). When this happens focus on your breathing and take a small breath in through the nose then a small breath out through the nose - hold your breath on the out breath for two to five seconds, and then recover breathing gently in and out through the nose. Continue doing this until the fear has subsided and you are able to take some action to make yourself feel safer. Remember when you feel afraid you feel unsafe and the antidote to fear is action. In other words - do something about it. We are never alone and although fear damages trust we can trust our instincts. Fear can consume you if you do not learn how to deal with it.
Fear is like focusing on the uncertainty of life and the world around us. Remember whatever we focus on - we get more of. Therefore if we focus on uncertainty - we get more uncertainty and can become more fearful. However I believe that fear is useful, necessary and can be used in very constructive ways to make life and living much better for us. Imagine how useful fear would be in making us run away if something ‘jumped out of the hedge’ as it were. The chances are if that happened, without thinking about what to do, we would be running away from
whatever it was and wouldn’t be seen for dust as we scarper in the opposite direction. You see fear can motivate us to take action or to do something about whatever is happening to us. Imagine a gazelle on the African savannah grazing peacefully without a care in the world. Along comes a couple of lions and the gazelle senses the danger and immediately runs away. Again fear has motivated the gazelle to take action, and it works really well as blood is pumped to the skeletal muscles to allow the animal to run faster for longer. For me it is much better to treat fear as a ‘call to action’.
Strabane Athletic Notes With the adverse weather conditions making pitches unplayable across the region, Strabane Athletic have had very little action to report upon since the last edition. The only 2 games that took place were the Reserves rearranged game in the Matt Morrison NW Junior Cup away to Magherafelt Reds which they lost 2-1 (John Roulston) and exited the competition at the last 16 stage and the NW Saturday Morning teams game away to Benbradagh Swifts which they won 3-1 (David Taylor 2, Alex Murphy) and enhance their position near the top of the Championship standings. Now going into a crucial stage of the season they will be aiming to battle it out for automatic promotion and a chance of some silver wear. The club will also be expanding and are happy to announce that they will be
having boy teams at under 16, 14 and 13 age groups competing in the F&W Brendan Keogh Youth Leagues and associated cups.

Under 15 Boys team sporting new kit from Caldwell Motor Factors
Swifts were on the road for the fourth Saturday in a row and this time it was a shorter trip to Limavady. Swifts came away with a deserved 4-0 victory over Limavady and overtook near rivals Derry City to be the top placed team in the under 13 age group from the North West. They are also now guaranteed top flight football for next season with Glentoran and Linfield etc and with Ballymena United and Glenavon almost certainly promoted, this will be offer top grade football to our local players. This is a great achievement for a club like Swifts with limited resources in comparison and the fact that Swifts focus on bringing through their own players.
Dominated
Pictured inset is Pascal Coyle manager of CMF presenting Adhamh Bonner captain of Sion Swifts with the new jersey that the team will be using this season. Main picture is the current under 15 team wearing the new kit.
Swifts dominated this game from start to finish playing some of the best football they have ever played. It looked as though it was going to one of those days with corner after corner and attack after attack thwarted by a resolute Limavady defence. However six mins before half time the brilliant Aiden Bishop put an excellent pass through to Lorcan McGrady on the wing whose superb cross was put away by Jamie Brown with a superb diving header. After the break Swifts really upped their game with Aiden Bishop and Anthony McCullagh play-
ing some excellent football in the middle of the park. The defence was brilliant as well with Daniel Lindsey, Steven Cairns , Cameron Coyle and Mark Roarty playing lovely football out from the back to the midfield. The next goal was inevitably scored by ‘goal machine’ Tory Nicholas, who was causing havoc for the home defence. The third goal was absolutely brilliant, starting out from the back by Daniel Lindsey, after a sequence of about 10 passes the ball fell to Anthony McCullagh who unleashed a 30 yard rocket into the Limavady goal. Dylan Nicolas came on in the second half at left back and looks a fine addition coming from the Colts. Dylan did not look out of place and his passing and tackling was particularly good. This allowed Mark Roarty to move up the left wing, giving the defence a torrid time and could have scored a few but for some generous refereeing decisions. Dylan Russell added to the Sion tally with just minutes to go. This was a great game with some brilliant performances. Daniel Boyle in goals had two saves to make in the game but acquitted himself well. The defence was excellent and Jamie Brown and Tory Nicholas were a real handful up front. Aiden Bishop and Anthony McCullagh were both MOM candidates with Mark Roarty and Cameron Coyle not far behind.

Killen Rangers – Building Success ‘One Season at a Time’ regime came with the new status as a Division One team, as Darren explains.
Two years ago Killen Rangers were languishing in mid-table of the Fermanagh and Western Division Two. Fast forward to February 2013 and the Castlederg side find themselves top of Division One after gaining promotion just last season. It has been a stunning turnaround for the club, with many citing former club Chairman and now team manager Darren Burke as the vital ingredient in Rangers’ change of fortune. Speaking to the ‘Herald’ before Rangers took on Irvinestown Wanderers, Darren looked back on the last couple of years and how things transformed for the club. “It was midway through the 2010-11 season and I was Chairman of the club and Victor Doherty manager. Things weren’t going right for Victor. He did a good job but just wasn’t getting the support that he needed. I took on the job and the team was sitting mid-table of the Fermanagh and Western Division Two. We got through the rest of that season using basically what we had. I tried to lift the players a bit and I thought some of them were playing out of position, so we swapped a few things around. We managed to steady things up and thankfully stay in the division,” recalls Darren. Recent action of Killen Rangers and Enniskillen Rangers. influential in the progress of the team,” Darren stresses.
New Strategy adopted The new manager then set about a new strategy for his first full season in charge. “Trevor Morrison came on board to help out with the training and also took on the role of goalkeeper. He was a big asset, coming from Ballinamallard United and he had great experience at a number of other clubs as well. He has been very
“We set out our stall differently. We train Tuesday and Thursday and focus on all aspects of our game and make sure we’re well prepared for the coming Saturday. So far it’s a strategy that has worked successfully and it’s the reason we find ourselves in this position we’re in. We didn’t bring any new players in for this season either because I have always been confident in the abilities of the squad that I currently have.” Rangers went on to dispose of Irvinestown Wanderers with a 5-2 score-line, with goals coming from Graham Young, Trevor Irwin, Wray Lindsay, Conrad Kee and an own goal. This saw Rangers sit three points clear of nearest rivals, Lisbellaw United, however United have two games in hand. With only a handful of games left Rangers find themselves in a great position to claim top spot in a league they were just promoted to this season, however the final destination for the league winning cup remains out of the club’s hands. “Obviously the weather of late has led to a few matches being postponed and there are teams with more games left to play than us for that reason, two of them being Lisabellaw Rangers and Enniskillen T United. With the games in hand they have, they both pose a threat to claim top spot,” admits a very cautious Darren. Whatever way it pans out, this will be viewed as a successful season for Killen Rangers.
The 2011-12 season proved to be a great success with Rangers finishing second in the league behind Strabane Athletic, gaining both clubs promotion. Strabane Athletic moved on to the Intermediate League, while Rangers moved onto the Fermanagh and Western First Division. A new So what about that long-term?

Does the club have any ambitions to join Strabane Athletic in the Intermediate League? “I guess a lot of it depends on how we finish this season. We’re not getting carried away and we’re happy to be where we are and a little bit surprised to be where we are too. I think it’s all down to what we’ve done in training and gelling it all together. When I took over as manager there was already some talk about going into the Intermediate League but I stuck to my guns and said that it would be best to see how we get on in the Fermanagh and Western first before deciding what the next step would be. We’ve given it a good shot this season and who knows what players we can get on board down the line after that. Maybe then we can look towards playing at a higher level. Meanwhile we’re just taking it a season at a time.” concludes Darren.
