Strabane public invited to attend major conference An open invitation has been extended to the people of Strabane and throughout the north-west to engage in debate about the future of Ireland at a major conference this weekend. The ‘Uniting Ireland’ debate is being held in the Millennium Forum in Derry this Saturday (28th January). Local MLA Michaela Boyle says it’s a great opportunity for the people of the town to hear the arguments for and against. She added that the issue has become even more relevant with Scotland’s recent push for independence.
Speaking at the event will be Sinn Féin TD for Donegal South-West Pearse Doherty, former Donegal County Council Manager Michael McLoone, Ulster Unionist MLA Basil McCrea, Human Rights and equality campaigner Inez McCormack, among others from public community and civic society. It’s one of a series of conferences being held across the country, with thousands having attended them over the past 14 months. West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle said discussion is important for communities to understand each other: “The previous events have been ‘full house’ affairs and I would encourage as many local people as possible to come along. As a border community, we only know too well the disastrous... Continued on page 46

Council bids a fond farewell to Philip
EUROHOUSE KILLYBEGS RD. DONEGAL TOWN TEL/FAX 074 97 23828

AT TOTS & TASSELS WE STOCK A LARGE RANGE OF FIRST COMMUNION FOR BOYS & GIRLS.
Girls Communion Dresses ranging from €99 Philip Faithfull and his wife Hazel Faithfull with the Councillors of Strabane District Council.
Strabane District Council held a reception on Thursday, January 12 in honour of their retiring Chief Executive, Philip Faithfull. Philip has held the post of Chief Executive since 2000, coming to Strabane District Council from Omagh District Council with a wealth of experience and knowledge in quality management and frameworks. Originally born and bred in the Railway Road, Strabane, Philip led Strabane District Council during a pivotal period. His experience in quality management led Council to achieve eight quality standards. He oversaw the establishment of the District Policing Partnership, the development of the Alley Theatre and the Community Library and supported the staff and councillors through the ongoing Review of Public Administration process. Council Chairman, Councillor Brian McMahon paying tribute to the Strabane man said, “Philip has led this Council over the past decade in a con-
sidered, compassionate and astute manner. He is a dedicated and articulate man who has accelerated the development and improvement of this Council and district. The Councillors and staff are very sad to see him go, but wish him a fulfilling and happy retirement.” Councillor McMahon continued, “I think Philip will be remembered most by the way in which he strengthened relationships within the chamber and amongst the staff. He always had time for people – whether it was a staff member with a concern or a Councillor with a query. He is recognised in public sector circles throughout Northern Ireland as being an approachable man who has the ability to work with anyone and make them feel at ease. He never led with any pomp or ceremony and his door was always open. He has made a lasting impact on this district and we always will hold an open door policy for him in return. On behalf of Council and Staff I would like to sincerely thank Philip for the dedication, passion, time, commitment and energy shown whilst in the post of Chief Executive here and wish him a happy and long retirement.”

Local store, Lecky’s VIVOXtra has always been committed to bringing outstanding everyday value to the local community. This month, the store went one step further, when it launched its ‘Tesco Price Match’ campaign, slashing prices on 100’s of every day brands. Victor Lecky, store owner said, “At VIVOXtra we recognise how important value for money is for our customers and that is why we are checking our prices with Tesco’s on 100’s of everyday branded products.” “We do this by checking www.tesco.com* for the price of 100’s of branded products that
both Tesco and VIVOXtra sell.” This campaign kicked off on Wednesday 18th January and will be ongoing. The ViVOXtra store, based in Castlederg, stocks a vast range of fresh local produce, made by local suppliers, as well as wellknown brands. It also operates an in-store hot and cold deli and butchery, plus many more amenities. Unlike other big supermarkets, Lecky’s VIVOXtra, saves you time whilst grocery shopping, as you don’t have to hunt through miles of aisles to find the value; nor do you have to park miles away from the shop or stand in long queues.

Massive local charity drive pushing close to it’s target
‘A Night For Joe’ a Massive Success! All photographs by Paul Green
A night of music was in held in the Fir Trees Hotel on December 27 that will stay in the memory of all who attended forever. ‘A Night For Joe’ was part of a major fundraising drive across Strabane in recent weeks in aid of local man, Joe McGarrigle, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer before Christmas at the age of 31. However Joe, his family and his wide circle of friends have not taken this news lying down and alternative methods of treatment have been looked at, with either China or the USA being the likely destinations. As soon as Joe’s diagnosis was made public, the people of Strabane got together and the ‘Joe McGarrigle Staying Alive Fund’ was established, as the treatments involved are, indeed, of considerable expense. ‘A Night for Joe’ was just one of the many events to have taken place in recent weeks in order to
raise funds. Other events have included a ‘Brawl in the Hall’ Boxing Night in St Pat’s Hall, ‘Jigs and Reels’ in the Melmount Centre, a hike up Mount Errigal, body waxing in Katy Daly’s, bag packing in local stores, fund raising in the USA and Australia, a Christmas single and a 2012 calendar featuring a cast of adventurous locals. ‘A Night For Joe’ was packed to capacity and those in attendance were treated to the cream of local talent such as Missing Time, the Forbes Sisters, JP McCauley, Gavin Kelly and Claire
McCallan, The Heads of State, Terry Boyle, Glen Rouse, David Oliver, Brian Hassan, Rois Kelly-Lynch and the Pontius Pilots, who had the entire audience on their feet by the end of the night. A staggering £9,014 and €425 was raised at ‘A Night For Joe’ and at the time of going to print the total raised so far for the ‘Joe McGarrigle Staying Alive Fund’ was fast approaching an amazing £70,000 – a testament to the goodwill of the people of Strabane and beyond.

Strabane Community Safety Partnership has delivered ‘Introduction to Breakdance Foundation’ workshops in Melvin Sports Complex on Friday nights for the past two months. The workshops provided local young with an opportunity to learn about hip hop music, and its structure, and learn the basics of Breakdance. They also had a chance to meet new friends, and the workshops helped improve young people’s health by engaging them in exercise. Strabane Community Safety Partnership provide diversionary activities to help prevent anti social behaviour from taking place. Councillor Patsy Kelly, Chair of Strabane CSP said “Strabane CSP continue to deliver innovative projects that engage with young people and give them something positive to do. I would like to congratulate all those who took part in the workshops, and the tutor for delivering them. I would especially like to congratulate the young people for their efforts and wish them every success for the future.”

Local slimming expert shares secrets of success! To celebrate the start of 2012 a weight loss expert from Sion Mills is sharing the secrets of successful slimming to help people turn their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight into a healthy reality.

Slimming World puts members in the driving seat, choosing what they want to 2.Be flexible. eat and what weight they want to be.
This January Slimming World has trawled its research to identify the recipe for successful – and sustainable – weight loss. The UK’s favourite slimming club surveyed the lifestyle habits of its most successful slimmers, the target members who have lost weight and kept it off for at least 12 months. It found most people had seven habits in common and dubbed them ‘the seven secrets of successful slimmers’.
Eating separate special ‘diet’ meals can make healthy eating seem like a chore, enjoying the same healthy meals as the rest of the family was a predictor for success in the research – and they’ll be healthier too!
It’s important not to become obsessive and get hung up on constantly weighing, counting and measuring what you’re eating. Sticking to a super-strict diet is near impossible because no one wants to go without their favourite treats forever, whether that be chocolate or a glass of wine or beer.
Being flexible by enjoying regular treats and special occasions means slimmers can lose In fact sharing your goal with a family member weight or maintain a healthy weight without or friend can add that little bit of extra commitmissing out. ment to succeed too, and if they’re happy to join in with you all the better.
3.Take up regular activity.
Sinead Twells, who runs Slimming World groups in SionMills, says: “By learning from other slimmers’ success, and perhaps where they’ve gone wrong with past New Year’s resolutions, people in our local areas who want to slim down this January can give themselves the best possible chance of achieving their goal. “Successful weight loss isn’t just about losing weight, it’s about keeping it off too. Making temporary changes and going on a ‘diet’ that’s unsustainable in the long-term will only ever be a quick fix, meaning you’re bound to regain any weight you lose – and maybe more – as soon as you go back to your normal eating habits. The key is to make healthy, realistic changes to your lifestyle that you can keep up for the rest of your life.”
This slimmer achieved great things!
1.Eating a wide variety of filling foods.
Cutting out food groups or banning foods completely will only make slimmers want them more and likely to give into temptation. Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan allows members to satisfy their appetite on unlimited amounts of every day foods that are filling but low in fat too like fruit and veg, The seven secrets of successful slimmers are: pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish, eggs Page 4 January 2012 The Herald

www.golffocus.net How to trigger your ‘peak performance’ state Hi everyone, and welcome to my other player’s performance, swing thoughts or slow play, internal thoughts; include to many technew column in the Herald. Over the next few months, I will be giving an insight to the world of golf psychology. My aim is to try and support you to use cutting edge techniques, and apply them to your golf game at whatever level you are at. Today I want to begin with how to trigger peak performance state in golf, often referred to as PreShot routine. I have trained with Europe’s leading mental game coach Dr, Karl Morris coach to Gmac, Louie Oosthuizen, Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood, all these players work hard at creating and maintain a solid pre- shot routine. This in return allows them to fully in the present state, and keep their minds of their swing, score or what they have done or need to do. I apply proved mental game tools, as can be seen by the fantastic success of the above players. Tour players, amateur players and teams I coach, are continually amazed at how much more they can become, focused, calm, and get into peak performance state by using the mental game tools. This state is often referred to as; The Zone/Bubble, when I as the question to a player who has shot a low round what does this mean; they state, inner belief, calm, trust and playing in the present. They often state “I was just focused on the one shot “ I feel it’s not the case of a player losing his/her concentration; it is often what takes it from the player. This can be due to external issues; weather,

nical swing thoughts, fear of not hitting a fairway, or sinking a putt. So how and what would I recommend to a player, to get into a peak performance state and not let external /internal factors affect their golf performance. How to create a consistent Pre – Shot Routine Learn to create and use on and off triggers that your mind can respond to. This will allow a player to recognise, when you need to be in peak performance state and when you need to relax and not burn up mental energy. Trigger on state is made up of developing an individual pre shot routine, players I coach and tour player’s practice this on the range and in play, it’s like making a cup of tea; you need milk, hot water, cup, and teabag. So what can you use? To trigger on. • Assess the distance, club, and wind. • Plan a specific target, get eyes to focus on it, ask what a good shot looks like • Take a practice swing to the target, keep eyes focused, same speed you will hit it • Work on taking a deep breath inwards using nose, exhale out using your mouth • Just see it and do it The key to this is practice the pre – shot routine, after some time you will find it will be a routineSee you next month....Shaun McGonagle.
Northwest Digital switchover for October 2012 The move from analogue to digital television scheduled for October 2012 was again highlighted last week after local Strabane Sinn Fein councillor, Michelle Mc Mackin attended a meeting with the body employed to secure the switchover. By Megan Conroy
Current British Open Champion Darren Clarke (above) and World No.1 Lee Westwood both believe strongly in the preshot routine. It has evidently served them well!
Digital UK is currently working with RTE, BBC and both the Irish and British Governments to ensure a smooth switch over to digital Freeview television in the Northwest. Cllr Mc Mackin said: “This time next year everyone will have to be on digital television, and so it is important that in the time ahead the public are made aware of what this means. If you currently have digital TV, Freeview or satellite subscription you will continue as normal. If you don’t then you will have to change to digital, this maybe by purchasing a Freeview box at £40 allinclusive for the standard option.” “The basic option is free if you have a TV licence are aged over 75 and or are in receipt of a wide range of benefits including people on pension credit, income support, job seeker’s allowance and employment and support allowance. A Help Scheme has been launched which will allow qualifying people to apply for financial assistance in moving over to digital, and others to avail of advice and support. Letters are scheduled to be sent out to those eligible for the free part of the scheme in February 2012.”

Glenelly man’s influence grows in the Capital Fresh from a victorious trip down under with Ireland’s International Rules side, Glenelly’s Michael Kennedy now has his sights set on another season with the footballers of Dublin. By Kevin McAnena If 2012 is anywhere close to being as good to him as 2011 was, the affable Cranagh man has lots to be excited about. Michael is back on board with Pat Gilroy’s backroom team, heading up the video analysis which forms a crucial part of Dublin’s meticulous preparation. He has occupied that role for three years now, with the ultimate prize arriving last September as the Dubs beat Kerry in that thrilling All Ireland Final. The former Glenelly GFC player is certainly making waves in the capital - as well as his involvement with the county and international teams he has settled into his day job as Director of GAA at Dublin City University. DCU has emerged as one of the country’s top college sides in recent years and its emphasis on Gaelic Games has saw top players like Bernard Brogan, Seanie Johnston, Bernard Brogan, Michael Murphy and Donie Shine line out in its colours in recent seasons. With a plethora of teams lining out between the university’s five GAA clubs, it must be quite a task to oversee it all?
“I was asked to come in just over a year ago to come in on a temporary basis because they were having trouble trying to steer the GAA ship,” Michael explained. “After a period of time I was asked to go for an interview and I was successful in getting it. On a day to day basis it varies quite a bit, from working with all the various managers and management teams, be that hurling, camogie, ladies football, handball or men’s football. (It involves) working closely with management teams and sports centres to make sure we provide the very, very best practice for our players in areas like nutrition, strength and conditioning, functional screening, functional testing. We try to ensure that all our players get the opportunity to experience the best level of care that they can be exposed to,” he said. Michael’s responsibilities extend beyond the playing field too, and he stresses the importance of maintaining the right balance between training and the books. “Education, to me, is number one. We’re fully aware of how a student is doing on a day to day basis in his or her studies. I work very closely with the heads of schools and course directors to see how our players are doing, and if there is someone struggling we have to put special provision there and get them extra tuition to make sure they get through any difficulties they may have,” he said. While winning the All Ireland with his adopted county in September was the stuff of dreams, Michael’s year was about to get better as he headed for Australia with the Irish International Rules squad.
Again, his duty was to provide Anthony Tohill with the expert video analysis that was to take this Ireland team on to a higher plain than their professional opponents from the AFL. Michael had previously been involved with the Ireland side that lost to the Australians in 2010 – the management team were keen to make sure that wouldn’t happen again. A professional approach was key. “Players had to be at a certain fitness level for a certain date, otherwise they wouldn’t be part of the squad. We also had training sessions every weekend based in DCU and the intensity was a lot higher this year. There was a lot of concentration placed on the defined tackle, and that was brought about by the excellent work of Kieran McGeeney,” he said. “We videoed every training session and we looked at that very closely to see how the new fellas adapted to the rules of the game and how they were performing. That was a significant difference. We also put a lot of emphasis on the interchange – we knew we had to get that right, and we did. The other thing was that the team that travels has a unique bond that develops over the time they’re away.” Michael’s involvement offered him the opportunity to work with the crème de la crème of the GAA’s stars. Who impressed him most? “Someone like Michael Murphy, who was relatively new to the game, he just took to the game very easily. He was probably the most outstanding player overall and would fit into any team in Australia, but there were other players like Ciaran McKeever who stepped up and performed to a very high level. Leighton

Glynn was probably unmarkable, and Stephen McDonnell and Joe McMahon were excellent as well.” Indeed the whole squad were excellent, and Ireland secured a comfortable 130-65 win over the course of both legs to bring the Cormac McAnallen Cup home with them. It was an occasion that brought enormous satisfaction to Michael: “The first call I got immediately after both games was my mother – here she was minutes after the
game, and how proud she was,” he said. “It only hit home then and as I started to receive texts from back home in Glenelly and Dublin. It was an immensely proud moment for me. Not just coming from a Glenelly background but also as a Tyrone man and coming from a Dublin perspective, and most importantly from an Irish perspective. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.”

Byrne recently performed for The Queen, having been invited to sing at a special concert celebrating Her Majesty’s first state visit to Ireland in May and she also appeared as a special guest for Neil Diamond in concert at the Aviva Stadium on 25 June. She will join the cast of Grease in August to make her stage debut as ‘Teen Angel’ at the Grand Canal Theatre Dublin and will reprise the role next year for the Derry dates of the tour.

In these stressful times, who couldn’t use a massage? Because many see it as a luxury, we forget it can actually benefit our health and help us through the challenging times. Everyone from young to old can benefit from massage therapy. Massage techniques most commonly include pressure and compression, kneading, frictioning, and mobilising to improve the health and condition of the muscles, tendons, skin, fascia or connective tissue of the body. Massage can decrease pain, improve range of motion, improve mood, reduce stress, aid in the circulation of blood and lymph flow, reduce muscle and joint soreness, and improve sleep. It can also boost the body’s own natural cellular immune response, decreasing pain by pumping up the body’s levels of endorphins and decreasing the blood levels of cortisol which is a hormone related to stress. The Wellbeing Spa offers a wide range of massage that will most definately help your mind body and soul including the Lymphatic massage (Ideal for detoxification and cleansing, the massage stimulates the body’s lymphatic system helping to eliminate toxins and waste that make you feel sluggish and

NOW SHOWING AT ECLIPSE CINEMA LIFFORD! Certificate: (12A) Cast: Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent and Richard E.Grant Plot Meryl Streep stars in this biographical drama as Margaret Thatcher a much loathed and loved political figure. As a fan of Streep I was curious to see how she could play the controversial former Prime Minister without glamorising the historical events that shaped the career of Thatcher. The film focuses on the relationship between Thatcher and her husband Denis, played excellently by Jim Broadbent, the scenes demonstrate the slow demise of Thatcher as she struggles to come to terms with dementia. The flashbacks throughout the film show how Thatcher fought her way up the political ladder from the late 50s when men were leaders and woman were the homemakers. As she succeeds her Conservative party members begin to realise that Thatcher never backs down. Verdict Streep takes to the role fantastically however it will make you debate whether you agree with Thatcher’s politics and sympathise with her as she comes to term with her illness. The story told shows the ‘Iron Lady’ in every angle manageable. A must-see for all Streep fans.

Paddy a founding member of The Bothy Band is one of Ireland’s leading uilleann pipers, and possibly the best of the best performing today. His family were a Travelling family steeped in traditional music; both Paddy’s father and grandfather were uilleann pipers.A fellow musician who played with Keenan in the Bothy Band compared his outstanding skill and talent on the pipes to Jimi Hendrix’s legendary ability with a guitar. Generally acknowledged as the most accomplished uilleann piper performing today, Paddy is certainly one of the most brilliant musicians of his generation. He can rightfully claim his place alongside such open-style legends as pipers John Cash and

Strabane Musician hits the right note for Sperrin Unit A Strabane musician is planning a Springtime re-release of a record in aid of the Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital.
Ian McGowan
by Kevin McAnena Ian McGowan has recorded and released a CD to express his gratitude at the treatment he received from staff at the hospital last year. ‘A Sperrin Mountain Melody’ is an acknowledge of the work and care of staff in the Sperrin Unit. Ian had initially put the CD out before Christmas, but hasn’t been able to organise a formal launch yet - he expects that to happen in the coming weeks. An accomplished guitar player, he composed and recorded the two-track CD after receiving treatment for low grade non-Hodgekins lymphoma. Ian said he wants to give the CD the proper launch and publicity it deserves: “It wasn’t really so much aimed at the Christmas market anyway, it’s got more of a Spring type feel to it.” He added: “We’ll probably launch it in the Sperrin Unit in Altnagelvin. We were all set to launch it on the 14th December, but then the weather was bad and they phoned me in the morning to say there
was no doctors or patients around, so we just put it out and into the shops.” Recorded and mixed at the home of Strabane music stalwart Pete O’Hanlon, the finished article itself is in the vein of Enya and Clannad, and Ian is ably assisted by his neighbour Bridgeen Tully who joined him on vocals and cello. Ian, who lives on the Melmount Road, has been a musician on a semi-professional basis for years
and has made a name for himself regularly playing gigs with Derry man Frankie Robinson. His inspiration for the project came as he was recovering from his illness - he found himself reflecting on life’s events and inspired by the view from a friends house overlooking the Sperrin Mountains, he set about resurrecting a piece of music he had been working on but had yet to complete. “I decided then to bring out a CD and dedicate it to the Sperrin wing, and any funds that came from it would be donated to them,” he said. “The measure of the service that the staff provide at the Sperrin Unit is unquantifiable, it’s an amazing service, delivered by amazing people,” he added. Una Cardin, Sperrin Unit Manager, said: “We appreciate the support for the Western Trust’s Sperrin Unit. Funds raised will be used for additional support and comfort for patients attending the Sperrin Unit, at what is a difficult time in their lives.” The CD costs just £5, and can be purchased at: Patsy Kelly’s Shop, Melmount Road Strabane. Brian Haughey’s Costcutters, Ballycolman Avenue. Strabane. Boston Tea Party, Craft Village. Derry. Fiorentini’s Restaurant, Strand Road, Derry.
Strabane public invited to attend major conference She added: “Given the current debate and growing from front page support for Scottish Independence, and the growimpact partition has had politically, economically ing anger in the 26 counties about the abandonment and socially on the people of this area for genera- of political and economic sovereignty, this confertions.” ence is timely opportunity to facilitate the much

need debate that is needed on how we, as a people on this island, can determine our own destiny and future in the best interests of all its people.” This regional conference is being held to facilitate the views of people from Tyrone, Donegal and Derry. It follows on from conferences that have already taken place over the past 18 months in America, England, Dublin, Cork, Galway and Newry. Organisers are keen to attract visitors of all political persuasions, with a format set up to encourage audience participation. No invites or tickets are needed, and the public can come and go as they please. The conference takes place in The Millennium Forum on Saturday 28th January between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

Bogus callers in the Donemana area - report Police in Strabane are reminding householders to be vigilant following a report of two bogus callers in the Donemana area earlier this month. By Kevin McAnena A man called at a house in the morning of January 9th asking about doing some painting work. The owners refused and he left. Later that day a second man called to the same house claiming to be from NI Water. He too was refused entry. Both men spoke with
southern accents. A police spokesperson said criminals will use all sorts of tactics to gain access to a victim’s home: “You should remember that any genuine caller will not mind being challenged about the authenticity of their identity,” she said. She added: “Everyone should follow this advice when dealing with unexpected visitors - before answering your door, ensure your back door is locked; think before you open the door - use your chain and spy hole or look out of the window to see if you recognise them. Ask callers for proof of identity, and check this carefully.”
Householders are also being warned about distraction burglaries. There has previously been reports in the Donemana area of a man calling to houses saying he had just run over a pet animal. “Beware of callers who attempt to distract you by claiming that they have seen something untoward in your rear garden or somewhere that may encourage you to leave your house - they may have an accomplice who is waiting to act upon this distraction,” the spokesperson added. If you want to contact police, the non emergency police number is 0845 600 8000. In an emergency dial 999.
STRABANE will finally be brought into the 21st Century after the welcomed news that Wi-Fi will be available in the near future. By Megan Conroy The news emerged last week that two points in Strabane’s town centre will provide free internet access for all. The two wireless points will be situated at the Alley Theatre and the Back Street, allowing internet to be accessible in all areas in the town centre. The plans issued by the Economic Development Department have been supported by local Sinn Fein councillor Michelle Mc Mackin she said: “Currently there is no point of Wi-Fi access anywhere in Strabane, the plan to introduce two hotspots will benefit local businesses, visitors to the town and schoolchildren. It is bringing Strabane into line with other towns across the North-West.” Plans have also been made to introduce Wi-Fi to rural areas in the Strabane District who have suffered from poor connection problems Strabane resident Danielle Gillespie is delighted with the news, she said: “I think that it will be great for the town, I have also found it frustrating that you can access the internet in other towns and cities but you can’t here. It is long overdue.”

Work to begin
Is curvy the way forward? It has always been a well-known fact that January signals the beginning of frantic get-fit fast regimes, with many women’s new years’ resolutions being to shed a few pounds and get in shape with myself included in this craze. After the Christmas season has been and gone the urge to create a ‘new you’ becomes the main priority on your to-do list. Today’s generation of young woman are obsessed with the latest dies and fitness classes that are clearly becoming more popular as the trend continues to flourish. Slimming world, the latest diet to take the world by storm, promote that eating nice food in moderation is all that we achieve to do to achieve that perfect body. If it was as easy as that would we not all b size 10 beauties? I did not see Chinese twice a week in their diet book. Do not get me wrong however I have seen the results of the slimming world craze and it works wonders but saving my sins until the weekend just so I can have a bottle of wine does not appeal to me in the slightest. Exercise has always been a thorny issue
Marylin Monroe was proof that you don’t need to be a ‘stick insect’ to look stunning & beautiful.
for me, getting up strolling round the bypass lost its appeal very quickly when the dark mornings came and the snooze button was even a mission to turn off. Zumba! When a friend suggested that we try the
Zumba classes in Riversdale I jumped at the idea, dancing to lose weight how hard could that be? I thought to myself that this was going be the thing that I would be good at, I would become a Zumba fanatic well how wrong was I? First mistake was walking into the jammed-packed hall wearing a tracksuit that would be suitable to take to the North-Pole. The music started and my heart sank and I knew I was in way over my head, the tears streaming down my face with laughter I knew the only way I could dance to this was with a few glasses of my earlier stated, beloved vino. As January draws to a close so do the, ‘I’ll do it this year’ attitudes, they are replaced with the more realistic motto of ‘I’m fine the way I am.’ Some women are born with the natural ability to stay slim while others need a little help along the way. Whether you’re a size 8 or size 18 women are meant to have curves. My reasoning for this argument is that Marylin Monroe was a size 16 and look how beautiful she was. For me I believe that if you really want to achieve that perfect body you will need plenty of will-power and dedication, qualities that I unfortunately do not possess!
PLANS to commence work on the £50 million complex in the Strabane/Lifford border area are due to begin at the end of this year. The Three Rivers Project which plans to see the development of a hotel, sports complex and an employment centre has also been the focus of interest for supermarket chains Tesco and Sainsbury for investment in the project. The news that the supermarkets are considering opening stores in Strabane has caused no concern to local competitor ASDA. A source for the supermarket said: “We are currently the main supermarket in the Strabane area; we have seen no decline in our sales figures during this recession and we are confident that ASDA will still be the main store for shoppers in the area. We have customers from Derry and across the border shopping here every week, we can not see this development causing any change to the business.” The project sets to create hundreds of jobs when the development is finished giving hope that Strabane will no longer be considered as an unemployment blackspot. SDLP councillor Patsy Kelly said: “Although the Three Rivers Project will see the creation of jobs in the future they will not be until the earliest 2014. The project is not going to happen overnight, however it will give people hope that jobs are on their way.” When asked his thoughts about a new supermarket development, Mr Kelly said: “In this current economic climate I do not think that another store in Strabane is necessary.”

2012: Are the Irish Coming? Some readers may be old enough to recall the Academy Awards success of athletic Brit Flick ‘Chariots of Fire’ in 1982. For those of you too young to remember, you’re probably more familiar with its instrumental piano score, composed by Greek electronic composer Vangelis, which still to this day is used as the theme music when someone is running in slow motion. Know it now? Cool! When he accepted his Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the film’s screenwriter Colin Welland famously announced “The British are coming”. As it turned out they weren’t and despite the recent success of British thespians like Colin Firth, Judy Dench and Helen Mirren, the cinematic imperialism imagined by Welland still hasn’t taken hold thirty years on. That very fact makes me wary of making bold declarations. Instead I’m going to ‘bottle it’ and merely pose a question rather than do a Colin Welland or an Alan “you’ll never win anything with kids” Hansen. So, tell me this – do you think this could be a big year for new Irish acts on a large scale? Something has been brewing over the last number of years and there is a distinct possibility of the froth spilling over into the mainstream in 2012.
‘Rainy Boy Sleep’.
It’s important, I think, at this point to stress that I’m not talking about Snow Patrol. While their success has perhaps put the spotlight on this island, particularly its northern half, such musical tourism has never been particularly fruitful in the past. In the late eighties when U2 were at their ‘Joshua Tree’ chest-beating pomp, Irish music once again became the focus. This sounds all well and good but the ‘suits’ who dipped their toes were not looking at Irish music in all its varying shades. Instead, all they wanted was U2 the sequel and only took onboard bands who honed a similar big sound and ragged Celtic look. Major label money was foisted upon bands like Aslan, Cry Before Dawn and Hothouse Flowers. Aslan, initially, imploded, Hothouse Flowers were perhaps too musically fluid for the conservatism of a major label and Cry Before Dawn were, frankly, not very good. So, when we got to the 90s, the new U2 were, as it turned out, U2!
Strabane Radio is online! It was long overdue but now it’s finally here – Strabane has its own radio station.
‘And so i watch you from afar’.

Reflecting over the the road also, with Lifford’s very own Stevie past year, my personal musical highlights Martin, aka Rainy Boy Sleep, about to go have all come from Irish bands. on tour with James Morrison. To be more specific, my personal musical Own Sounds highlights of the past year have come from Northern Irish bands! The “small but mas- The beauty of the acts named above is sive” gatherings at the Glasgowbury festival the fact that they are musically nothing like every July are proof that many others feel Snow Patrol or, indeed, each other. Unlike the same way. When someone asks such the ‘Next U2’ mirage of the late eighties, people what they’re listening to these days, these new artists are making waves on their the answer will most likely not be some chart own terms and with their own sounds and fare or what’s on the cover of the NME or garnering attention for that very reason; Q Magazine but something discovered something denied to various Irish acts down independently via the magic of social net- through the years. working, sites like Bandcamp, local venues supporting acts performing original material and innovative local radio shows like Radio Foyle’s ‘Electric Mainline’. These are musical utopias for those who want something they haven’t heard before, who haven’t put a full-stop on their musical adventures simply because they’ve reached a certain age and for whom “give us one we know” is the cry of the complacent in need of the comfort blanket of record sales and television to dictate their tastes. Make no mistake about it, we’ll all be long gone and people will still be making great music! Lucky for us, there is so much to get excited about right now and chances are it’s on our very own doorstep.
New Irish Talent Out of this beautiful indigenous melting pot of variety a marker has been laid down over recent weeks right into the heart of national day-time radio. On Radio One alone, the past month has seen airplay for Derry’s Wonder Villains, Strabane/Lifford House DJs/Producers Zenemy DJz and Lisburn’s Rams’ Pocket Radio. Add to that the matter of Derry’s top electro exponents The Japanese Popstars making the 2012 Choice Music Prize shortlist for their fantastic ‘Controlling Your Allegiance’ album alongside Carryduff’s Cashier No.9 for their debut album ‘To The Death Of Fun’ and god-like glass breakers from Bel-
‘Wonderthumb’.
These acts are also just the tip of the iceberg. Irish Hip-Hop is making a powerful tribal roar as is our burgeoning electronic scene, particularly in Derry and Donegal with the ‘Culture Glitch’ nights championing the likes of Shammen Delly, Diatribe and The Crimson Underground. The one thing that all of the above share in common is this – they all play their own material and have been given the chance to develop thanks to local venues and local audiences willing to listen. Are the Irish coming? They’re already here, go out and find them!
The online only station has been live since early December and is going from strength to strength on a daily basis. The beauty of online radio is that the listenership can go beyond the local area and the same can be said for Strabane Radio Online. Joining a healthy local following are listeners from as far afield as Toronto, Boston and Melbourne, many of whom share very close ties to the Strabane area. The station is still in the process of development and plans are already in the pipeline for new shows being added to the already fine eclectic mix that’s in the schedule. Classic hits, Brass and Jazz, Americana, Country, Rock, Soul, Ska and of course the exciting new music coming out of Strabane, Derry, Donegal all find their way onto the various playlists, with further tastes to be accommodated for soon. Strabane Radio Online can be accessed simply by logging on to www.strabaneradio.com.
Here’s the weekly schedule: Monday 8pm-9pm Sounds of Brass and Jazz with Paddy Band 9pm – 11pm Requests and Dedications with MickE Tuesday 8pm – 9pm Americana with DJ MC 9pm – 11pm The Ferry Connection Wednesday 9am -11am Good Morning Strabane with Richie Rich 8pm – 10pm My Kind of Country with Johana Hex 10pm – Midnight Nice and Easy with Specky Reynolds Thursday 7pm – 9pm Golden Oldies with Marie 9pm-11pm Irish Country with Stevie D Friday 1pm-3pm Connie’s Country 6pm – 8pm I Love the 80s with Sean Mac 8pm – 10pm Hook on Country with Richie Rich 10pm – Midnight Friday Late with Specky Reynolds Saturday 2pm – 4pm Irish Country Show with Stevie D 4pm – 6pm 80s Music Jukebox Sunday 1pm -3pm Irish Country Show with Stevie D
