The Holy Cross girls celebrate winning the Northern Ireland Cup for the second time.
A jubilant Holy Cross College team brought the Vauxhall Senior Schoolgirl’s Cup back to Strabane on Thursday afternoon following a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Thornhill College in the Final at Moyola Park. Both teams enjoyed a bright start, particularly in the midfield area, and Holy Cross opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Lauren Brennan lobbed the ball over Thornhill College goalkeeper Niamh McLaughlin from 25 yards out. Holy Cross’s lead was extended in the 14th minute when Courtney McGarrigle scored from three yards out after a scramble in the goal mouth.

The second half started with a bang, as Holy Cross’s Northern Ireland International Lauren Brennan scored on the counter attack, to put the game effectively out of Thornhill’s reach. Any attempts of a Thornhill comeback were kept at bay by Alana McShane and the rest of the Holy Cross Defence. Chelsea Sherrin wrapped up the scoring for Holy Cross in the final minute to round off a 4-0 victory, much to the delight of the large Holy Cross support in the stands.

Holy Cross coach Gerald Boyle paid tribute to his great group of players. He was delighted that the girls got a victory on the day as a lot of the squad will be leaving the school this year. “This was a brilliant achievement from what I believe to be the greatest group of girls we’ve had together at one time. That is now two Northern Ireland Cups they’ve claimed. They lost in the final last year and to be honest they were really hurting from that defeat. They were not going to let that happen again and they were really determined to bring the Cup back home to Strabane. I couldn’t be more delighted for them,” enthused Gerald. Irish FA Women’s Football Assistant, Jackie Blythe was hugely impressed by the game and the turnout. “The final was a fantastic advert for schoolgirl’s football in Northern Ireland. It was great to see so many supporters here and thanks must also go to Vauxhall who have sponsored this competition yet again,” she stated.

The ‘Lifford Players’ return to the local stage
The Lifford Players are set to stage their latest production, a presentation of “Happy Birthday Dear Alice” by Bernard Farrell, at the Alley Theatre in Strabane, followed by two nights in the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny. A touching and at times hilarious look at aging, the play centers on ‘Alice’ as she celebrates her 70th birthday. In flashbacks, she recalls former birthdays as her children try to convince her it’s time to enter a retirement residence. Alice has other ideas in which her dead husband’s partner Jimmy has a major role. A raging bull and faulty hearing aids also figure prominently in the plot. The cast for the production, which takes place in the Alley on Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8 and in the Regional Cultural Centre on Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21, includes Ann Shiels as ‘Alice’, Leo McBride as ‘Jimmy’, Michelle McCrory as ‘Barbara’, Michael Kelly as ‘Barry’, Arthur McGarrigle as ‘Cormac’ and DeeDee Diver as ‘Sandy’. It will mark a welcome return to the local stage for the Lifford Players, presently celebrating 61 years of entertaining drama audiences up and down the country. Founded in 1952 by officials from Donegal County Council and Lifford Post Office, their first production was “The Fort Field” by George Shiels and little did they think then that the group would still be flourishing 61 years later. The Protest Singer’s Muse ‘Red Wedge’ was a gathering of musicians who attempted to engage young people with politics in general and the policies of the Labour Party in particular, during the period leading up to the 1987 general election. The campaign was spearheaded by Billy Bragg, Paul Weller and The Communards lead singer Jimmy Somerville, as they put on concert tours and appeared in the media, adding their support to the Labour Party campaign.
Whatever your views on ‘Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead’ climbing its way up the hit parade in the wake of Margaret Thatcher’s death, one thing is certain: the self-proclaimed ‘Iron Lady’ in both life and death has been a consistent muse for music and most of it in opposition. As Christy Moore once put it when discussing his version of ‘Ordinary Man’, a song written by Grimsby songwriter Peter Hames about a factory worker losing his job as the plant closes down then struggling to survive: “I’ll say one thing about Thatcher, some fantastic songs were written during her reign.” He’s not wrong. No one individual instigated a similar surge of musical protest during the 1980s and with the possible exception of George W Bush, political figures who followed in her wake have never had to run a similar musical gauntlet, which says more about modern day apathy than it does those figures in question. More on that later.
Margaret Thatcher certainly gave the socially aware artists of the 80s a lot to chew on and most spat back with venom. Penny Rimbaud of anarchopunk radicals Crass once told music writer Dorian Lynskey: “I think Thatcher was an absolute fairy godmother. Christ, you’re an anarchist band trying to complain about the workings of capitalist society and you get someone like Thatcher. What a joy!” One of the leading figures of protest against Thatcher during her tenure as UK Prime Minister was Billy Bragg, whose songs like ‘Between The Wars’, ‘Ideology’, ‘It Says Here’ and his bitter reinvention of the old Florence Reece folk ballad
‘Which Side Are You On?’ all tapped into Thatcher’s fight with the Trade Unions, the fall-out of the Miners’ strikes and, as Bragg viewed it, a Torybiased tabloid media.

While there are those who believe that pop and politics should never mix, there is also a body of people who love to make decisions affecting peoples’ lives while they’re under a Gangnam-Harry-Styled hypnosis, so a timely reminder within that very medium wouldn’t hurt! While none of the 80s school of protest stopped Margaret Thatcher from carrying out her intentions when in power, the willingness and right to oppose still warrants and gains remembrance. But is it just remembrance now? We will never live in a blissful utopia where all the wrongs of the world are put right, so where’s the opposition today? It would be wrong to say there are no such figures in contemporary music. One is Frank Turner, who actually performed in Dicey Rileys, Strabane in 2006. On the night he performed a song called ‘Thatcher F***** The Kids’, which explores the apathy of the youth of today, laying the blame on the doorstep of the ‘Iron Lady’ herself. “So all the kids are b*******, but don’t blame them, they learn by example. Blame the folks who sold the future for the highest bid,” sang Turner, with sharp cynicism. So are we done with this sort of thing? Many a ‘Ghost Town’ is still there to be seen but not too many feel like singing about it. Is music now exclusively an escape and nothing else? Do we really want ‘Harlem Shake’, ‘Hollyoaks’ and to get wasted on Buckfast at the weekend instead? If so, fine, noble endeavours, but forget about ‘Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead’, the encore would appear to be reserved for the ‘Iron Lady’ herself.

A married couple who embarked on a ‘last chance’ weight loss attempt are celebrating after losing more than 20st between them and gaining a ‘second chance’ at love.

James and Joyce Quinn, believe dropping the weight has saved James’ life, as well as rescuing their marriage. James gained weight after being made redundant from his job as a sports instructor two decades ago, he says: “When we got married 27 years ago, I weighed 10st. I was a sports instructor and very active, but I lost my job and went to work as a manager in a video shop. I was eating all the same foods, lots of crisps and chocolate bars, but I wasn’t burning them off anymore. I gained weight quite quickly, suddenly I was 12st, then 14st and it went up and up. I’d go on crazy diets and lose a stone but as soon as I stopped I’d put it all – and more – back on.” “In 2011 I’d given up on life. I genuinely thought my family would be better off if I went to sleep one night and didn’t wake up in the morning. I felt like a burden to them. I was so tired all the time I didn’t do anything around the house, Joyce did everything for me and it was affecting our relationship.” The turning point came when James got measured for a kilt for his niece’s wedding and discovered his waist was 62” – the biggest size available. Award winning NWRC course provides perfect Study/Life balance A mother of three is just a few short weeks away from achieving her dream of gaining a higher education qualification, all thanks to an innovative course on offer at North West Regional College. Strabane lady Siobhan McAleer, like many others, was keen to improve her qualifications and career prospects, but family responsibilities meant she couldn’t commit to studying in the traditional way. Responding to the need for more flexible learning options, the Health and Social Care lecturers at North West Regional College developed a new fast-track course, allowing students to achieve a Higher National Certificate in just one academic year, as opposed to the traditional two year route. The pioneering approach not only offers the course in a shorter time, but also via blended learning, through which students attend some classes in College and can complete other modules online from home or anywhere they have online access. With the help of a range of online tools, including audio, video, text and practical exercises, the students can follow the module themselves, and ask for support from staff as required. All the materials were created especially by the teaching staff for the fast-track course. This innovation in e-learning has earned Jacqueline MacBride, Curriculum Manager for Higher Education and Access Courses in Health and Social Care, the Innovation in Teaching and Learning award at the prestigious RSCni Innovation in e-Learning Awards, which are open to all providers of Higher Education, Further Education and Training across the province. Jacqueline, with the assistance of Lecturer Susan McGrory and the College’s ILT Team, developed all the materials for the course. The team are delighted that one year on, the students are achieving the same high standard of results as those

undertaking the same programme in two years. “The feedback from students and employers was that they would like to be able to undertake the HNC in one year and we were keen to meet their needs. It was time consuming to prepare new materials but we benefitted from staff development to help us use new technologies to deliver the course, and it has proven very successful with excellent results.”
Flexible For Siobhan the blended learning has made all the difference to her approach to her studies. “Because I have three children and I can be flexible, I can complete modules at home, or if I have spare time in class. It has also helped me immensely as I’m more ICT skilled now, able to upload and use
attachments which I couldn’t before – I couldn’t even turn on a computer when I started. The other benefit is that you get a lot of good feedback from your lecturer.” The ‘blended learning’ approach, and the sustained student achievement impressed the RSCni judging panel, who felt that what the NWRC Team have achieved should be promoted to other training providers across the UK. “This project demonstrates how effective the application of technology to learning can be when led by learner requirements. The judges were impressed by the broad-based approach to the design and delivery of the new course. There is good evidence of learner and staff responses to the new course including video evidence and it would be good to see this more widely promoted to the sector across the UK as a model for development
in other subject areas as it allows the shaping of learning around learners circumstances.” The College had double the reason to celebrate at the awards ceremony with the Network Services Team also winning a first place accolade, in the Innovation in Technical Infrastructure category. Continuing with the College’s ethos of making learning as uncomplicated as possible for students, IT Technicians Alan Mitchell and Daniel O’Brien integrated the use of Apple Technology on College computers, meaning students can log onto a Windows PC or Apple Mac and access their documents – something which would not have been possible before. The judges’ feedback emphasised just how this seemingly simple fix can make a real impact for learners. “The project takes a common problem for FE and HE providers of maintaining parity of access to resources for both Apple Mac users and computers using Windows. Previous solutions required users to log off from one machine and log-in to the other system on a new machine. The college have set up a unified system, which now removes barriers to applications and resources to allow learners to access the materials and services they need, regardless of the machine they are using. This is a step forward in integration.” By winning two of the three awards open to FE providers, North West Regional College showcased not only the expertise and innovation of its staff, but its commitment to putting the learner’s needs first, allowing them every opportunity to access their chosen course and online resources, and to study in a way that best suits them, and their family or employers. This is a view echoed by mum of three Siobhan who will complete her course this June. “This has been a very positive experience for me, having the best of both worlds – class time with my lecturers and peers, and the ability to study at home, meeting the needs of my family.”

This will be the fifth consecutive classic for this worthy cause. The funds raised have enabled the association to carry out a number of improvements - recent examples are the fitting of internal doors in the apartment building with automatic opening and closing sensors and the development of a large park area. And the award goes to….. In December 2012, Allstate NI were awarded Investors in People Gold standard. Gold is the highest level of recognition available under the Investors in People framework and is a significant achievement given that, across the UK, less than 1% of organizations recognized under IiP have been successful at this level. “Gold represents achievement of world class best practice. It shows a truly cutting-edge organisation, operating at the very highest levels of people management practice using Investors in People to drive the business forward” - Investors in People. This prestigious award marked a great end to 2012 for Allstate NI. In early March 2013, Allstate has been awarded a Gold Accessibility Award as part of the Change a Little Change a Lot Campaign. “Being one of the largest employers in Strabane, we take our role in the local community very seriously. We felt that getting involved with the Change a Little Change a Lot campaign would demonstrate our commitment to disability awareness and accessibility even further,” says Deirdre Doherty, HR Manager at Allstate Strabane. “We made very simple, but very effective changes” such as changes to recruitment flyers, incorporating disability awareness into induction training for new employees and arranging mental health first aid training for line managers, with plans to establish an employee-led Disability Awareness Committee.

In addition, a third building now houses a further 96 staff, highlighting Allstate’s commitment to Strabane. Allstate Strabane showed its appreciation for its staff on Thursday 6th September by holding its first ever ‘Employee Appreciation Day. The day comprised of a non-stop agenda of events and activities. The day kicked off with a three – way live video link from Allstate Executive Vice President, Suren Gupta who addressed the employee base from his office in Chicago, Illinois, and Bro McFerran, Allstate Northern Ireland Managing Director from his Belfast office. Both thanked the Strabane based staff for their efforts across the board in the last 12 months which have seen the Strabane site go through its most rapid expansion since opening a little over 9 years ago. Staff were treated to a complimentary lunch followed by an ‘Allstate Expo’- representatives from Allstate’s key employee committees manned stalls to remind staff of the benefits of working for Strabane’s largest employer. The day ended with a motivational speech to fourteen Allstate locations across three continents.
The celebrations continued last month when Allstate Strabane retained their title as ‘Employer of the Year’ at the prestigious Strabane Business Awards. Allstate was described as ‘….a company embracing a philosophy which promotes a lifestyle and not just a job. An on-site Row-a-thon event in the last quarter of 2012, saw many employees participate in the event, raising funds for The Northlands Centre - drug/alcohol abuse shelter. Throughout the year various Dress Down days have raised money which has been donated to Meningitis Research and Good Morning Strabane – a local initiative for the elderly. The Charities Committee has also organised various raffles in aid of The Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital and Breast Cancer Awareness. The Charities Committee has supported other Charity organisations such as, CLIC Sargent, MS Society, Make a Wish, Strabane Community Project, Riding for the Disabled, HURT & Chest Heart and Stroke. The Charities Committee also supports St. Vincent de Paul on an annual basis with their Toys for Tots and Hamper Appeal. The overall total raised by the Committee in 2012 was in excess of Stg12,000 and efforts this year to date are on target to exceed expectations.
Several new development programmes were launched to employees; an entry level IT programme which provides extensive reskilling for Strabane staff to retrain in IT software development. A fast-track Team Manager programme has been implemented for aspiring managers and leaders of the future. The In My Good Hands (IMGH) initiative saw 56 staff trained in this customer service training ensuring staff have the necessary skills to manage their call, providing the client with the highest level of satisfaction possible. As we continue to build the Strabane site as a Centre of Excellence, we continue to roll out industry best practice training such as ITIL, KCS and SOX compliance. This should firmly place Allstate Strabane as an industry leader in the BPO and contact centre industry in Northern Ireland. In addition, Allstate have demonstrated their commitment to the wellbeing of their staff by launching their Energy for Life programme. The Strabane Leadership team were among the first in Northern Ireland to avail of the programme which focuses on managing personal energy and expanding capacity without compromising health and happiness.
It’s not all work… The onsite Sports and Social Club continues to go from strength to strength. Membership has been increasing month on month for the past two years, with 400 of the Strabane’s 500-strong staff base now members. The onsite committee, made up of representatives of the workforce is responsible for organizing a varied programme of events through the year, with on average two events taking place per week. Recent events have included trips to the Sound of Music, Dundonald Ice Bowl, Go-karting, and Bowling which are all either heavily subsidized or free of charge. There are also several spin-off clubs including a Golf Society, Film and a monthly ‘movie and meal’ night. Upcoming events include onsite pamper evening, surfing lessons and a summer party.

School Employer Connections This 2 day work experience programme for 16 -18 year olds delivers exposure to working in a fast paced dynamic environment. Students have the opportunity to spend time in various business departments and attain an overview of the ANI operation in Strabane. To date, 16 students have taken part from schools in Strabane, Omagh and Derry. In June 2012, Allstate NI Strabane attended a Science Fair in Strabane Academy, with responsibility for judging the science projects and sponsored prizes of shopping vouchers & goodie bags. Allstate NI Strabane’s Recruitment Event in the Alley Theatre, Strabane was a huge success, receiving a total of 265 applications, assessing 249 applicants, interviewing 130 applicants and making 85 job offers. Comments on the day included, “I’ve heard that Allstate is fantastic for employee satisfaction so it would be great to get employment there.” “I have a lot of friends who work in Allstate and from what they say it is a very good place to work.” The Strive 2 Work programme aimed at getting long term unemployed back into the work place has also been embraced by Allstate Strabane. The workshop organised by Business in the Community, in partnership with Job Directions Ltd, has successfully offered nine Strive 2 Work candidates full-time positions with the company.

Tommy is set to go the distance Strabane man, Tommy Barr, is no stranger to long distance treks and the avid rambler is set to take on another adventure this year. In 2011 Tommy was looking for a long distance trek that was affordable and would allow him to walk on his own. On the advice of a friend he considered the Camino de Santiago Compostella, an old pilgrimage trail to Santiago Compostella in Galicia in Northern Spain. “It looked ideal, with cheap hostels (albergues) and way marked trails,” explains Tommy, speaking to the ‘Herald’ last week. “There are various routes and I choose the most popular the Camino Frances from St Jean Peid de Port in France. It crosses into Spain on the first day and continues through Northern Spain, passing the cities of Pamplona Burgos Leon through the Provinces of Navarre Rojas Galicia to Santiago de Compostela. I continued on the route for another 120 Km to Finnisterre and Muxia. It was a wonderful experience with beautiful scenery and although I had been sceptical as regards the spiritual experience I did find it allowed me to think more clearly and readjust my attitude, which

France was two extremes: very busy in the popular walking areas such as the Lot Valley and extremely quiet in

Strabane Novelist Publishes Her Debut A novel exploring the ‘Troubles’ and life today has recently been published and it has come from the pen of a Strabane woman. ‘Dancing With Statues’ by Caroline Doherty de Novoa centres around love and mystery in post-conflict Northern Ireland, shedding light on the present day while grappling with questions on how it can come to terms with its past, and move forward to a brighter future. A central theme of the novel is the extent to which our history defines us. Caroline explores this through the story of Laura and Miguel. Laura is a young woman living in Northern Ireland, trapped by the tragic events of her past, until Miguel, a lawyer from Colombia, comes into her life offering her a fresh perspective on the place she calls home — and the Troubles she lived through. While not an autobiographical piece, Caroline could definitely draw from her own life for inspiration. In 2002 she graduated from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice. She then moved to London to train as a solicitor with Clifford Chance, one of the world’s top global law firms, where she would work for nearly a decade. Working on international cases at Clifford Chance gave her the opportunity to travel the world, as well as the chance to work in Madrid, a place she held in her heart, for six months. It was there that she met her future husband, Juan Novoa, a Colombian entrepreneur who was studying at Madrid’s famous business school. They travelled often to Colombia, where Caroline found a culture very similar to the one she grew up in: friendly people, who knew how to have fun and weren’t afraid to laugh at themselves. After Northern Ireland, it soon felt like her second home. Caroline has worked as both a lawyer and a

252 Golfers compete in Meningitis Research Classic There was a record entry for a team classic at Strabane on Sunday past when an unbelievable 63 teams lined up for the inaugural Meningitis Research Trust Team Classic a total of 252 golfers in all Which was a fitting response for the very hard working committee, who put the event together with marvellous prizes and unequalled sponsorship. The final total raised was in excess of £13,000, which is also a new record amount for a team classic on the Ballycolman links. The winners of the event were team classic specialists Freddie Patterson, Michael Baldrick, John Brolly and newcomer the fast improving John mcMemamin with a total of 109 pts, which just got up on the line from long time clubhouse leaders Eoin O’Neill, Brian Boyle, Pat O’Neill and Brian Haughey who accumulated 108 pts, in third place were Martin McDermott, Jimmy Callan Kieran O’Neill and Kevin Connolly with 107 pts, fourth went to Eamon and Laura McCay who teamed up with Frankie and Caroline Connolly for 105 pts, in fifth were Denis Porter, Kevin Keegan, Joe Doherty and George Turner with 104 pts the final team prize going to G Curran, D.Hinds, S. Sommers and R. Godfrey from City of Derry with 103 pts. Club Captain Dr. Ciaran Kelly congratulated the organising committee led by Sean Devine on their tremendous work in making the event such a success and added that he hoped the competition would become a major feature on the fixture list in years to come. The golf committee hand over the huge amount raised (£13,000) to Meningitis Research after the hugely successful Golf Classic.

The success of such without doubt – was down to the sponsors, the players and the organising committee and without your support and participation on the day, the event would not have been as successful as it was. All in all, 130 sponsorships of tees and prizes was donated and 64 teams took part on the day - an astounding result and a highly rewarding and enjoyable day. The event itself was a two-fold occasion being both a fund-raiser and a day to raise awareness of Meningitis. A phenomenal amount of £13,000 was raised and presented to Meningitis Research Foundation who are deeply indebted by the generosity and support shown by all. To all the sponsors, a very sincere thank you for your donations, to the players – your presence and participation made the day the success that it was and to Strabane Golf Club, and all staff involved, thank you for the use of the facilities and the very efficient service provided.

Strabane’s over-50’s got into the swim of things recently, as they participated in the annual Margaret Kelly Swim Challenge at Riversdale Leisure Centre. The concept of completing an imaginary swim from the River Mourne in Strabane to the River Liffey in Dublin inspired over 40 individuals to take up regular swimming over the four week period of the Margaret Kelly Swim Challenge. The overall winner of the 10th Annual Swim
Challenge was Mick Moore from Strabane. Commenting on all those who took part, the Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan, said “I would like to congratulate all those who took part and I hope that participants will continue the habit of regular swimming.” The Margaret Kelly Memorial Trophy was presented by members of the Kelly family, including Margaret’s son John and her sister, Celine McClintock.

Riversdale Fitness Suite recently hosted an Open day at their facilities. On the day customers met with qualified fitness consultants who gave customers a tour of the facility, discussed their personal goals and the type of exercise programme suitable to their needs. Spring is in the Air! Spring is here... We tend to feel better within ourselves and are much more motivated to get outside and do something.
After what seems a long dark winter there are definite signs of spring all around us. Daffodils are up and the trees are budding beautifully.

Practising on the golf course...what a novel idea! out a certain type of behaviour that is structured to respond to the situation the brain is presented with, just as the context called ‘stag party’ brings out an altogether different set of behaviours.
I often ask the players I work with ‘how much practice do you do on the golf course?’ The look I generally get is one of ‘why on earth would I do that? Practice is what I do on the range. Surely I go to the golf course to play golf’. Yet, this single issue is maybe one of the main reasons why most golfers know the person who goes to the range, they know the person who goes out to play on the golf course and they are not one of the same! We are a pretty unique sport in the sense that most of our practice is done in an environment which has little or no bearing on the actual game. I would imagine a snooker player does most of his practice on a snooker table, a tennis player on a court and footballer on a pitch. Yet, as golfers we spend hour after hour on a range that is about as far removed from the context of the golf course Top players like Graeme McDowell can as it is possible to be. even fall into the trap!
Remember those two words as you go forward with your game this year, context and environment. Both of these two factors have a huge impact on you psychologically. Do you behave the same way in the environment called a football terrace as you would in the environment called
office? Hopefully not! We are shaped enormously by the environment and the context we find ourselves in. Our brain ‘codes’ these environments and creates templates of how to respond in these specific locations. The context called ‘wedding reception’ brings
Much of the testing and analysis we do with our golf, such as putting labs and fitting centres, take place in an environment which is very different than the one we play in. This doesn’t mean we can’t learn very valuable information about our game with these scientific aids, but we must understand they cannot tell the whole story of how that particular person will respond in the environment of a golf course and the context of a competition. The more you are exposed to a particular environment and context, the more your brain will find a way of dealing with the situation and making the best of it. Yet, if we continually avoid the situation and hide out in the sanctuary of the range, then your brain will constantly feel ill at ease on the golf course. Maybe this year you decide you are going to do things a little differently and give your brain a chance to adapt to the golf course environment by actually spending more time there. You can play some wonderful practice games on course that will have a big impact on your game and you will start to find there is less trepidation
in playing come tournament time. Even the very best players fall into this trap. On a recent trip to Florida, Graeme McDowell admitted he had become a little bit too fond of walking out of his villa at Lake Nona and just bashing golf balls on the range which is right next to his house. This year marked a new commitment for him to play more roll-up game with the members to get his brain tuned into ‘match mode’. Here are some suggestions as to some ‘games’ to play on the course that will not only develop your game but are fun to do as well. • 3 Club Challenge – take just three clubs out with you and your putter and see how you get on. You will be surprised at how creative you can become. • Worst Ball – only when the course is quiet but play two balls on each hole. You have to select the worst ball all the way into the hole. This is TOUGH but well worth the effort. • Iron Off The Tee – play nine holes only hitting an iron off the tee. Again, you will be surprised as to how low you will score. Just a few examples of the many games I get the players I work with to play. Club Notes N.I Intermediate League Draperstown Celtic 1 v 2 Strabane Athletic A goal in the final minute from Sean Ferry saw Athletic end their league campaign on a winning note. A tight affair throughout saw Athletic create by far the better chances and if not for bad finishing the game would’ve be over as a contest before the second half even kicked off. The other scoring on the night was Jason McGrinder who will no doubt take home yet another top goal scorer gong at this years prize giving / dinner dance.
NIIL Challenge Cup Semi-Final Strabane Athletic 1 v 0 Newbuildings Athletic are into yet another cup final after defeating double winners Newbuildings Utd at Melvin Park on a windy and wet afternoon. A 30+ yard thunder bolt from top goal scorer Jason McGrinder settle the game at the end, a goal that had both camps applauding and it was appropriate that it came from arguably the league’s stand out player of the season. Athletic bossed the game throughout but just couldn’t find the finishing touch that much of their build-up play deserved. Keeping the ball grounded was a necessity as the windy conditions made it impossible to play any accurate long balls. With little goal mouth action in the first half, except for the goal and another shot that was pushed onto the upright by the ‘Buildings keeper, Strabane went into the break on the up knowing they had their rivals on the back foot. The second period should’ve seen Athletic out of sight with Winters in goals a mere spectator. Ferry, playing on his own up front and chasing everything that moved, hassled the defenders to make long clearances that Athletics’ defence dealt with, with ease. With Donaghey, Devine and McGrinder controlling the central midfield Strabane created chance after chance. Ferry had a shot cleared off the line after rounding the keeper; another blocked by a last ditch tackle and a few efforts that were pulled wide when in good looking positions. McMullan hit the crossbar with a curling shot from 25 yards on the angle which the ‘Buildings keeper could only watch and admire. He also saw a clear cut penalty decision given as a free kick when he was brought down by the ‘Buildings keeper (who many would argue should’ve been sent on his way) a few feet inside the area. Devine saw a long range effort sail inches wide and McGrinder placed a shot just over the bar in a crowded box. Strabane were grateful for the final whistle and now find themselves in another final against Ardstraw who defeated Oxford Utd Stars. The curtain raiser will take place at Mountjoy United’s ground on Saturday 11th May at 2pm. The club would like to see the same support that greeted the team in their first final against Newbuildings over the New Year, hopefully this time the result and performance will be a more positive one.

two chances saw Aodhan Doherty first hit the bar before seeing a second effort cleared off the line. With the score deadlocked at the interval, Athletic opened the scoring early in the second period from an unlikely source. Full back, Kevin Patterson, who has played for the club since their formation, scored his first goal for Athletic and a crucial goal it was to become. With his confidence at an all-time high he saw another effort brilliantly saved by the ‘Derg’ keeper and with that the tide turned. Dergview found a new lease of life and push Athletic back but their goal came after of a howler from the usually reliable Early in goals. What seemed like a routine catch, Early somehow let the ball squirm through his hands an into his goal. Dergview then saw an opportunity to steal all 3 points when their forward broke the offside trap and found himself one-onone with Early but he lost his composure at the crucial point and luck was to be on the host’s side as his tame effort went harmlessly wide. The last chance of the game fell to young Molloy but the Athletic left winger saw his half chance pulled wide from 15 yards on the angle. The point apiece does little for either club as both are looking over their shoulders and any further slip ups over the final few weeks could undoubtedly see them relegated from the top tier of the F&W league.
NW Saturday Morning Strabane Athletic 3 v 2 Tamnaherin Celtic Terry Conroy’s charges celebrate their promotion to the Premier Division with an easy win against Tamnaherin Celtic. The score line may suggest that it was a great entertaining game but truth be told Athletic dominated this fixture and could’ve racked up goals at will if not for some indecisive finishing and slack final deliveries. Celtic opening the scoring against the run of play with Athletic responding to fire 3 goals in quick succession through the impressive O’Reilly (2) and the joyful Coyle who provided everyone with a little bit of extra entertainment when he completed his customary cartwheel-back flip celebration. Athletic passed the ball around with stylish composure and attacked at will. They conceded a late 2nd but with the result not having any implications on their promotion it was a blip and they closed out the game on the front foot again. Conroy stated that his players deserved everything they have achieved this year; “they have put the hard work in on the training pitch, it’s a young squad with various play-
ers helping the 1st team out on many occasions. Next season will be difficult but I’m positive we will not be pushed aside. We have a winning mentality throughout the club so hopefully we can show everyone throughout the North West what talented footballers this town has”.
Youths The clubs U16 team defeated St Patrick’s 5-1 (Murray 2, McCormick, McBride & Grant) in their opening game of the season but then were defeated 5-3 by Fintona Swifts (Murray 2 & Coyle). The U14 team defeated Mountjoy Utd 2-1 in their opening fixture (McCay & Sweeney) and like their elders suffered a defeat in their second fixture away to Lisnaskea Rovers, going down 4-0.
