Welcome to this year’s Prize Giving and a particularly warm welcome back to the British School of Paris to our Guest of Honour, Jochen Paesen, Old Parisian. Many congratulations to all our Prize winners. Today is an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of the current academic year and to celebrate all that makes this school such a special place in which to learn and grow. To all of you who are leaving us today: It has been our privilege to teach and nurture you during your time with us. On behalf of all of your teachers, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the future, wherever in the world that may be. As you leave us, my parting words to you are not to be dazzled by changes big or small, good or bad, but no matter which pathway you decide to choose, always remember to ask yourself, ‘what am I doing to make the best of it?’ It is my hope that you will be inspired by Jochen to return to us one day and to share your successes with a new generation of BSP pupils. Please do stay in touch using the contact form on the new BSP website. We are very keen to follow your progress and, in turn, to keep you up to date with all the news and forthcoming events at your former school.
Prize Giving has always been one of the most anticipated events in the school calendar and we hope that this year’s event lives long in the memory for all our graduating students, leavers, prize winners and their families. In helping make today’s proceedings such a special and prestigious occasion for the School community, we are indebted to the generosity and support of our sponsors, BMW France, Marks and Spencer France and Sanderson Fabrics for helping to give the Class of 2013 such a good send-off. Enjoy your day and thank you one and all for all that you have done over the course of the year in support of the School.

Guest of Honour Jochen Paesen Now one of the world’s foremost vehicle designers, Jochen Paesen was born in Belgium in 1976 but spent his youth moving across Europe and South Africa with his parents and brother and fellow Old Parisian Jeroen. Often stating that his love of design was instilled in him in Design and Technology classes at the BSP, examples of Jochen’s early creative talents still adorn the walls of the School’s Curie Science and Technology Building. He left the BSP in 1995 for a place in Coventry University’s Transportation Design Department, before being just one of fifteen young designers worldwide to be accepted every year onto the renowned Masters degree course in Vehicle Design at the Royal College of Art in London. Whilst at the RCA, he impressed the judging panel of the prestigious Helen Hamlyn Research Centre Contest, a design competition aimed at improving people’s lives, with a taxi of the future called SW7, which was designed to ride safely – almost like a golf buggy – through London pedestrian streets with a driver and two passengers.
Jochen’s design career began at Volkswagen in 2001 where he designed, amongst other projects, the interior of the VW Amarok. He moved to BMW in 2006 and worked on the interior of the new BMW 6 series, the only automobile design ever to win a coveted Federal Republic of Germany Design Award from the German Design Council. His most recent work involved being the Lead Designer for Interior Design on the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept Car, giving vehicle enthusiasts the world over a glimpse of the cars of tomorrow. His automotive design drawings and photographs are highly sought after by collectors and aficionados throughout the world and many feature scenes from another of Jochen’s passions, Motorsport.
We are delighted that Jochen Paesen, Old Parisian, has journeyed from his home in Munich to be our Prize giving Guest of Honour 2013.
