Saturday 31st May – 5pm (duration 2 hours)
Pétanque on a summer’s evening Cité Metro Station, Paris If you thought the typical French pastime of boules, or pétanque, was restricted to the south of France, you would be wrong. As soon as the weather permits, Parisians take to the parks and squares to compete in long drawnout contests of this very French pastime. You will often spot contestants profiting from breaks in play to sip on a pastis or ricard – the quintessential French aperitif. Discover the Île-de-la-Cité and tour the island to see the exteriors of the gothic masterpieces of the Île-de-la-Cité: the extraordinary Notre-Dame, Sainte Chapelle, the Palais de Justice, and the Conciergerie. A walk through
the square of the island’s famous flower and bird market will be followed by a stroll along the quay with its breathtaking views, all in the company of an expert guide. You will visit Notre-Dame where you will be invited to discover the gargoyles and flying buttresses that adorn this heavily decorated edifice. Nearby on Rue Chanoinesse you will discover the infamous site of the barbershop that is said to have inspired the Sweeney Todd tale and pass another infamous site – l’Hôtel-Dieu – the oldest hospital in the city. Your evening will end with a French touch: a lesson on the art of boules in the beautiful
surroundings of the Place Dauphine, a hidden 17th century square found on the western tip of the island. Added to this will be a little bit of gossip, mixed with plenty of anecdotes, all while you sample a cool glass of pastis just like a local, bien sûr! Includes expert tour, glass of pastis and pétanque lesson. Limited places; tickets are offered on a ‘first-come, first served basis’. Cost: 20 Euros per person (this event only suitable for children aged 16 and over). Booking can be made via the BSP online box office and boutique at www.britishschool.fr/b&b
Sunday 1st June – Departs 10am (duration 2hrs)
Père Lachaise Cemetery Tour Gambetta Metro Station, Paris Père Lachaise cemetery slumbers on one of Paris’s seventh largest hills where it harbours the graves of a considerable number of French and foreign dignitaries. In addition to being the permanent address of many a VIP, the cemetery is replete with artworks – in fact well-known artists sculpted a large number of the gravestones. During the tour you’ll visit the graves of big names such as Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Edith Piaf, Victor Noir, Molière, La Fontaine, Jim Morrison, Frédéric Chopin and many more. You’ll hear about the tangle of the legends and anecdotes involving Père Lachaise. The cemetery
grounds draw wanderers from all over Paris to enjoy a peaceful retreat from the city – especially those seeking a refuge for a Sunday afternoon ballade. You’ll wrap up your tour with one last, but nonetheless resplendent, view of the city from the south of the cemetery. Includes expert guided tour of Père Lachaise. Limited places; tickets are offered on a ‘first come, first served basis’. Cost: 20 Euros per person (this event is only suitable for children aged 16 and over). Booking can be made via the BSP online box office and boutique at www.britishschool/b&b

Old Parisians Rugby Match Ile de la Loge, Bougival and afterwards on the Senior School lawns One of the enduring features of the BSP lies in the strength and camaraderie of its sporting teams. On the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary we are inviting former pupils, no matter when they left, to join forces once again on the pitch or the touchline for a rugby match against The British Rugby Club of Paris. A great way to rekindle past school sporting glories either as a player or spectator. Both teams will play for the Derek Lewis cup, which is currently held by the BRFC with a 25–10 win in 2012. The BSP had won it the 2 previous times, so we are trying to assemble a diamond anniversary squad to win it back !
To register your interest in playing or attending, please contact Luke Curtis, Old Parisian (1997–2008) via development@britishschool.fr or visit the BSP Old Boys vs BRFC Rugby Match Facebook group. A barbecue and refreshments will be provided for all players and spectators following the match on the Senior School lawns. Why not make a weekend out of it? Please bring your family and visit the popular BSPS Annual Summer Fete which is being held at the Senior School before the match gets underway. Details elsewhere in this booklet.

Junior School 60th Celebration Performances Music and drama performances In this celebratory year, the traditional Year 6 production will act as the keystone in an evening of music, dance and drama. The Year 6 production will allow the children to share the best of stage musicals throughout the six decades since the school opened. Under the musical leadership of Mr Lockwood and the stage direction of Mr Young the children will need to draw on all of their theatrical skills; singing, acting and dancing to bring alive scenes from musicals including Les Miserables, The Sound of Music and West Side Story. The theme gives us a marvellous choice of material to present to you and will undoubtedly be a stunning highlight of the school’s year.
Year 6 will be supported by a Year 3, 4, & 5 chorus. In this anniversary year, to ensure this event is even bigger and better than usual, the evening of entertainment will be added to with a theatrical contribution from Year 4, supported by Year 3. A complimentary glass of champagne will be available to toast the performers. The Junior School will also be hosting a Summer 60th Concert on Thursday 5th June at 4.30pm in the Junior School Hall. All orchestras, choirs and ensemble groups will participate to provide a wonderful afternoon of musical entertainment.

Back to School Barbecue – A whole school event – 4pm–7pm Brought to you by the British School of Paris Society, Development Office and Area Welcome Representatives. Start the new school year in style with friends old and new with an open air theatre production and entertainment for all the family. Delicious barbecue, champagne tent and bar kindly provided by the British School of Paris Society, but please bring along a picnic rug or chairs to set up your pitch on the Senior School lawns. There will be burgers, hotdogs, popcorn and ice-cream for sale as well as a selection of drinks. Entrance to the event and the open-air theatre performance is free of charge, so please bring along the whole family! School staff, British School of Paris Society parents and Area Welcome Representatives will be on hand to meet new families, and to answer any questions you may have about your first days or weeks living in France. The play involves a bit of slapstick, plenty of water sloshing around and lots of audience participation. You’ll definitely laugh, you’ll probably cry – and we defy you not to be cheering at the archery competition or the sponge-throwing in the stocks.
Please note: This is an outdoor production by a professional theatre company and will go ahead no matter what the weather conditions. Please dress accordingly, and bring a low-backed chair or rug to sit on.
